‘Salute’ movie review: Dulquer Salmaan scores with his restrained performance as a cop

The latest rosshan andrrews offering is a slow burn, investigative film that builds towards an unexpected climax.

Dulquer Salmaan in ‘Salute’

Dulquer Salmaan in ‘Salute’

One of the scenes in Salute has two cops, Aravind Karunakaran (Dulquer Salmaan) and Marar (Alencier), planting evidence to ‘solve’ a murder case. As the action progresses, the suspect is picked up, beaten and drops of his blood placed at the crime scene. It seems too improbable to be happening, but the possibility of it reels one in.

Salute , streaming on Sony Liv, is a slow-burn as far as investigative films go, but well worth the time spent. The denouement is leisurely arrived at, and the few loose ends are tied up and explained neatly. Director Rosshan Andrrews collaborates with scenarists Bobby-Sanjay again for the film, that is produced by Dulquer Salmaan.

The film pivots on the murder of a couple, its investigation, the pressure from politicians on the cops to ‘close’ the case as soon as possible, and what happens in the aftermath.

Dulquer Salmaan as sub-inspector Aravind Karunakaran is a riveting watch and impresses as the cop on the tail of an elusive criminal while trying to beat a ‘system’ that places roadblocks. His restrained take as the newly-commissioned policeman reluctantly pulled into a conspiracy by senior cops, including his older brother Ajith Karunakaran (Manoj K Jayan), to frame an innocent man is a diametrical opposite of his flamboyant character in Kurup .

Cops turning on each other is a familiar theme, but the presentation has one torn between wanting to condemn them and empathising with them.

The action unravels after the ‘murderer’ Murali is framed and subsequently arrested. The five policemen, including the Karunakaran brothers, involved in ‘solving’ the case are faced with the fact that the actual killer is out there. Their concern is not the man they framed.

The cops are at a point of no return; their lives, careers and pensions are at stake. They have to look out for themselves and each other, even if it means destroying evidence and not letting a colleague do his job. It boils down to self-preservation and a potential whistleblower will not be tolerated.

The ‘system’ — politicians, political parties and ministers — is invoked many times during the course of the film. A guilt-ridden Aravind goes on a long leave unable to tolerate this system, but returns and cracks the case with help from the same system.

The non-linear narrative works well for the straightforward story. The director takes his time with it, and the twist in the tale is unexpected given the build-up. The script ensures that there are no distractions from the main story, and themes such as identity theft figure only to circle back to the case at hand. That said, certain scenes such as the one where Aravind returns home with his girlfriend Dia (Diana Penty) and leaves the family wondering about their relationship seem superfluous.

Manoj K Jayan and Dulquer being cast as brothers is unexpected, but works well. The supporting cast includes veterans such as Indrans, Alencier, Sudheer Karamana, Saikumar in tiny roles, but they deliver what is required, as do the younger lot like Binu Pappu, Vinod Sagar, and Shaheen Siddique. However, one can’t help but wonder about what Diana Penty, Lakshmi Gopalaswamy and Saniya Iyyappan are doing in the film.

There are plenty of opportunities to dramatise and exaggerate, but thankfully, Rosshan Andrrews does not indulge. A police procedure film is always an interesting watch, especially when done realistically, and Salute scores.

Salute is currently streaming on SonyLIV

Salute movie review: Dulquer Salmaan’s rooted investigation drama holds promise but lacks the knockout punch

Last Updated: 06.15 AM, Mar 18, 2022

Story: Sub inspector Aravind Karunakaran and his colleagues including his elder brother and DySP Ajith Karunakaran are under massive pressure to solve a double homicide. While they narrow down the suspect, they don’t have enough proof to make a case and hence fabricate evidence to implicate him. Aravind, however, is against this ploy and takes it up with his superiors who begin punishing him for his upright ways, forcing him to break away from the job and his family. Years later, he decides to take a crack at the case again. Will he succeed or make more enemies in the process?

Review: Director Rosshan Andrrews and scriptwriters Bobby and Sanjay had last done an investigative thriller almost a decade ago with Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Mumbai Police. What made the film work to a large extent is how the probe tied neatly and surprisingly to the personal life of the investigating officer. Salute too makes use of this, but here it’s more about the clash of ideologies between its characters that gets fleshed out, more than the investigation itself.

image_item

The protagonist, sub inspector Aravind Karunakaran (Dulquer Salmaan), is the idealistic type who chooses being a cop over a lawyer to follow in the footsteps of his brother Ajith Karunakaran. However, after he is part of a conspiracy within the cop circle to fabricate evidence to implicate a man, whom the senior officers think has committed a double homicide but can’t prove, Aravind has a fallout. Unable to digest how the world of police works and more importantly his brother’s ways, he takes a long leave from work and also stays away from his family. A family function, however, brings him back in town and leads him to give the case another crack. But this time, without the power of being a cop.

In Salute, Bobby and Sanjay have detailed this world of police – be it their vast network, the in-fighting, the procedures and also how life becomes hell if you turn against them, even if you were one of them. And it’s not just the power they wield that comes to focus through the film, the scriptwriters also put the spotlight on the massive pressure that the officers are often under – sometimes from their higher-ups and almost always from the weight of the consequent fallible actions. Salute’s main strength lies in this – how through the story it defines the personal and professional lives of the cops and in this case, how it affects the dynamics between the two brothers.

The investigative part, however, holds promise but never quite delivers. Even as Aravind chases after an unknown killer, who keeps forging identities, you are never hooked to the case. It’s also probably because he himself is never actually on the hotseat of finding the culprit. While the story itself is about his obsession to prove that the implicated person is innocent, it sort of becomes a side show with him stumbling on clues almost accidentally. It’s also a film where you would wonder if the film would have ended better if it didn’t have Aravind’s final dialogue – considering a vast portion was indeed dedicated to the investigation.

Dulquer ably showcases the varied sides of Aravind and it’s probably the anger that also differentiates each phase. You could feel that he’s a bit green behind the ear as he first goes up against a gang of political goons for roughing up his brother. Though there’s a hint of restraint when he returns two years later, the pent-up rage that has been building up surfaces soon after he finds himself powerless. Salute isn’t a typical Dulquer film and the actor understands it well, he doesn’t let the character err too much from the graph except at certain points and these make strong impacts.

Manoj K Jayan and Dulquer in a still from Salute

Manoj K Jayan plays the other pivotal character. Contrary to Aravind, Ajith’s graph is all over the place and that’s what the role demanded too – considering the pressure he is in, from within the family as well as the police establishment. You could almost feel his stress every time he’s at home or with his cop colleagues.

Diana Penty is massively underutilised in the role as Aravind’s girlfriend. Shaheen Siddique and Sudheer Karamana are the other actors who make an impression. Jakes Bejoy’s music is just right for this grounded investigation drama that doesn’t rely on too many gimmicks of the genre and lets its characters’ emotions drive it. Aslam Purayil’s cinematography is another plus in the film, which is paced and edited well to be watched on a streaming platform.

Verdict: Salute isn’t a typical Dulquer thriller. But given it’s an OTT release, the makers have used the freedom to delve more into the characters’ mindspace and that works well for this grounded investigation drama, which is definitely worth a watch.

Salute review: Dulquer’s thriller is an engaging police procedural

Dulquer Salmaan as police officer in Salute

A film where the hero plays the role of a police officer is usually cue for bombastic action scenes glorifying the power of the khaki uniform, with several sequences justifying custodial violence and extrajudicial killings. Dulquer Salmaan’s Salute , directed by Rosshan Andrrews and written by Bobby-Sanjay, stands out in this respect. The thriller is centered around a policeman whose conscience comes in the way of doing what is necessary to keep his job.

The film begins with Aravind Karunakaran (Dulquer Salmaan), an SI who is on long leave, going to a police station to get the details of a case that he had investigated three years ago. The double murders of Martin and Sheeba had rocked the town back in the day, and Aravind along with others in his team, including his superior officer and brother Ajith Karunakaran (Manoj K Jayan), had come under tremendous political pressure to resolve it quickly. Convinced that they had the right man, the police at the time planted evidence to secure his arrest and nail him in court. But later, an unexpected encounter makes it clear that the criminal is someone else. While everyone is convinced that they must let the matter be, Aravind cannot be at peace.

Dulquer is understated as the conflicted Aravind, caught between familial love and his strong sense of right and wrong. There are shades of Nayattu in the film, with police officers who know the system like the back of their hand, playing cat and mouse with each other. Aravind hero worships his brother, but the relationship unravels when they disagree on the case. The other characters in the family are oblivious to what’s happening, and this feels strange because they’re a close-knit unit. Nevertheless, the tension between the brothers is an interesting angle and doesn’t fall into a predictable pattern. The absence of a conventional villain, someone the hero cop has to vanquish, also works to the film’s advantage.

I wish, however, that the film had explored Aravind’s guilt and dilemma some more. He comes off as a black-and-white cop who goes by the rulebook, someone who is ready to make major decisions at the drop of a hat. Are there no chinks in his armour, no grey shades to his personality? The ‘too perfect’ nature of his character makes him a little less real, while Manoj K Jayan’s nuanced performance makes Ajith more human.

Watch: Trailer of  Salute

The screenplay is engaging, but if you think about it, the progress of the plot depends on too many coincidences. Aravind visits the same jewellery shop where the convict’s sister works, setting him on the path to rectifying his mistakes. A random case he investigates in a faraway district turns out to be connected to the one he’s obsessed with. A vital clue emerges from this investigation that leads to many other discoveries. Though this serendipity is rather convenient, the film benefits from convincing performances of the supporting cast, including Binu Pappu, Alencier, Indrans and others.

The women characters don’t have much to do. Lakshmy Gopalaswamy and Saniya Iyappan are largely in the background as “family” while Diana Penty plays Aravind’s supportive girlfriend. Thankfully though, Salute does not waste any time with romantic songs or sentimentalism. It sticks to being a police procedural albeit an old fashioned one, with Jakes Bejoy’s background score complementing the action without amplifying anything unnecessarily. There isn’t much by way of forensic evidence or smart technology to help track the criminal; it’s a good old chase with a dogged policeman who’s after a crafty criminal. In fact, it felt very much like Dulquer of Salute chasing after Dulquer of Kurup .

The ending of the film reminded me of Sean Penn’s The Pledge , the same tantalising feeling that the big reveal is just around the corner, only to have it snatched away. A well-made, mostly interesting film that could have been better if it had managed to make the viewer warm up to the characters more.

The film is now streaming on SonyLiv.

Salute Movie Review: Dulquer Salmaan's riveting cop drama is replete with new ideas

Salute, directed by rosshan andrrews, is an engaging police procedural drama featuring dulquer salmaan and manoj k jayan. the film is not your usual cop thriller, but it's interesting, nevertheless..

Listen to Story

Dulquer Salmaan's Salute is streaming on SonyLIV.

Dulquer Salmaan's Aravind Karunakaran is a former sub-inspector who is on long leave. He enters the Maranalloor police station to reopen the Martin-Sheeba murder case that he had investigated three years ago. But, the inspectors at the police station hesitate to hand over the case files to him. Aravind is a man who commands respect. But, he is also a police officer who is forced to plant evidence to frame a convict due to political and other external pressures.

Salute starts off with this scene and grabs your attention right from the get-go. It makes you ask questions about the murder case, Aravind's long leave and why he is reopening the case. Three years ago, Aravind, along with his brother Ajith Karunakaran, and three other police officers, closed the Martin-Sheeba case by framing an innocent man. What happens when a police officer's conscience comes in the way forms the story.

Director Rosshan Andrrews' Salute is replete with new ideas. The cop drama stays away from glorifying custodial torture. It does not have a hero in khaki, drifting in sumo cars. Instead, it portrays the life of policemen who had to face pressure from superiors to close a murder case. What is extremely appealing about Salute is that it does not take the familiar route. We don't really get to see the actual murder. It is through the evidence that we understand what has happened. It keeps us engrossed throughout.

But, there are some crazy coincidences which we need to look past to know who the killer is. For example, Aravind Karunakaran always chances upon clues when he's stuck. It is also commendable that the villain is actually faceless in this largely entertaining cop drama. Another interesting aspect of Salute is Dulquer's Aravind taking on his brother Ajith (played by Manoj). The conflict between the two brothers and their ways of functioning are poles apart. This makes the proceedings riveting.

Dulquer Salmaan as sub-inspector Aravind Karunakaran is brilliant in this procedural drama. He shows the helplessness in his eyes, which turned out to be quite effective. But, it is Manoj, who steals the show with his performance. The film does not need women as they are there as mere supporting characters. Cop dramas are mostly about cracking a case or policemen who indulge in custodial torture. Among such films, Salute stands tall. If only the director had done away with some of the obvious clues, the film would have had a much better impact.

Cinematographer Aslam K Pruayil and music director Jakes Bejoy's work was perfect for the film. Binu Pappu, Saikumar, Alencier Ley Lopez and Sudheer Karamana's performances as supporting characters helped Salute to become what it is.

In short, Salute is a cop drama with smart ideas executed to perfection.

3 out of 5 stars for Salute.

Salute is currently streaming on SonyLIV.

Salute movie review: Dulquer Salmaan’s film is a fine police procedural

Salute movie review: dulquer salmaan plays a cop stripped of all the antics that cop movies usually bestow upon their lead actors..

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that Malayalam cinema makes the best police procedurals in the country today. Rosshan Andrrews’s Salute, which features Dulquer Salmaan in the role of a cop trying to crack a case gone cold, joins the long list of impressive cop thrillers from the industry and makes for a riveting watch. The film, which doesn’t quite rely on shocking twists, majorly works due to its focused storytelling, and in spite of being slow-paced, it still manages to keep one engaged till the end. (Also read: Kurup movie review: Dulquer Salmaan’s film is a compelling crime drama about an elusive fugitive)

Dulquer Salman plays a police office in Salute.

Dulquer plays sub-Inspector Aravind Karunakaran, whose role model to join the force is his own brother Ajith Karunakaran, the deputy superintendent of police (Manoj K Jayan). Aravind looks up to his brother and takes pride in working under him. Ajith leads a team that’s after a faceless killer. The police nab the guy who they believe is responsible for the double murders, but there is not enough evidence to prove it. However, the real criminal turns out to be someone else and the police, upon learning of their goof up, decide to just let it all resolve on its own. Aravind’s conscience doesn’t let him be at peace. To nab the real killer, Aravind goes on long leave and starts to investigate on his own, earning the wrath of his own brother and his team.

What really works in the film’s favour is the narrative style. Unlike most cop thrillers, Salute isn’t in a hurry to make the hero catch the criminal. This isn’t one of those films where the twists blow you away. In fact, the film rarely relies on any major twists and rather spends its time on letting the hero be haunted by his own conscience and a faceless villain. Every time we feel like the hero is very close to nabbing the killer, the story takes a detour and Aravind hits a roadblock. Here, we don’t get a hero who’s invincible but someone who is as vulnerable as anyone. The fact that the film never tries to glorify Dulquer’s cop character is a major highlight for the film.

After the breezy romantic comedy Hey Sinamika, it’s refreshing to see Dulquer play a cop stripped of all the hero's antics. He delivers a measured performance and makes us empathize with his character, someone who’s torn between duty and family; right and wrong. The conflict and the tension between the brothers make up for another interesting angle that works in making the story quite engaging. The women have very less to contribute and Diana Penty gets wasted in a role that has no impact.

A slow burn police procedural that’s watchable for Dulquer Salman’s restrained performance, unconventional narrative elements and for the terrific atmosphere created by the solid cinematography and Jakes Bejoy’s background score. The political influences, powerless state of agencies, the framing of innocent people and the moral dilemma portions are realistically portrayed. However on the downside, it dips down and gets sluggish at many places with underutilized characters, convenient coincidences and forced dialogues. The initial cliched family portions was boring as well. Though the experimental finale was an interesting choice, the entire pre climax buildup, connecting all the dots and rising expectations, kinda leaves you with a mixed feel. On the whole, ends up a decent watch.

Deer Roshan andrews,

Thank you for giving 2 fight scenes to DQ, so that fans could clap while starring lonely at their screens.(wait, theatre vittayasam undavumo? 🤔)  👍 Thank you for giving Diana nice clothes and jewelry to wear (Kalyan sponsered?) and letting her speak in authentic English, since she is a northie. 👍

Thank you for giving Manoj K Jayan the same annoying police officer role. 👍

Thank you for letting us know that Swift is a good car and has leg space. 👍

Thank you for letting us know that a live- in relationship is still not acceptable in our society. 👍

I mean…this could have been a good movie, but it is directed in a very slow paced way…works for mumbai police, but not here…It reminded me of Article 15, where again the direction dragged the movie.

When Rosshan Andrrews (boy, the extra letters still baffle me!) and Bobby-Sanjay team up for a police procedural, expectations are pretty high. That's primarily due to their excellent previous outing - Mumbai Police - which was a gripping investigative thriller with new shades and broke certain conventions around the good-guy-bad-guy trope. Its unpredictable twist was one of the core winning components, taking actor Prithviraj to greater heights. Now, let's get back to Salute, the Dulquer Salmaan staaarrrer (sorry, even the keyboard secretly tells me to add extra letters).

I don't want to give away much of the plot here, but we'll discuss certain elements that I liked and disliked. Let's start with the downers first. An issue that I've had…

I know I m in the minority but the slow burn narrative didn't bother me. Infact it worked quite well for me till the final act. But "What a bongu" of an ending that dragged the film several notches down from what could have been a good mystery thriller.

Liked how the film uses DQ. It's been many years since he gave a film before Kurup and then Kurup happened for me to hate it. Salute uses his presence decently and exploits him as a Star but I wonder if the film needed the actor more. Need some desperately good films from him, miss those times when he was doin films like Kammatipadam.

Salute movie review: Dulquer Salmaan takes on an unconventional police drama

Dulquer Salmaan remains thoroughly invested in his character’s dilemmas from beginning to end.

Salute movie review: Dulquer Salmaan takes on an unconventional police drama

Language: Malayalam

The trailer of Salute indicates that Dulquer Salmaan here plays a policeman who is being surveilled and tailed by his colleagues. Salmaan is Aravind Karunakaran, a young officer first embroiled in a cat-and-mouse game with his own department, before getting sucked into the pursuit of an elusive, nameless, faceless criminal.

Salute largely unfolds as a police procedural, showcasing the tedium of police investigations far removed from the glamour associated with them in TV shows. It is also about the possibility for redemption when a member of a  corrupted state machinery has not entirely lost his conscience. His situation is more complex and the screenplay thus more layered because the wrongdoers he is fighting include those he cares for deeply.

This new police drama – directed by Rosshan Andrrews, written by Bobby and Sanjay – does not adhere to the conventions of the Malayalam filmverse. It is neither loud nor flashy as commercial cop films from this industry often are. It is not preoccupied with the hero’s swag, which is particularly commendable because that hero is played by the producer. It is also not about dirty cops alone nor about a clean-as-a-whistle Robin Hood, but revolves around an individual who falls in the sizeable space in between.

So far so good, and for the most part, Salute remains engaging as Aravind first wrestles with his conscience, later the system he was once a part of, and finally a con man whose every mask when peeled off reveals yet another. Somewhere in the second half though, the narrative begins to stretch itself, mistaking length for ruminativeness and needless additional seconds for detail. This progressively diminishes the impact of the suspense and the new revelations at every turn.

Even when it slips though, Salute is never less than interesting.

The film offers enough meat about Aravind’s investigation to keep that part of the plot absorbing, and spends a fair amount of time developing a couple of the policemen played by Manoj K Jayan and Alencier Ley Lopez who are Aravind’s combatants. This, and the moral questions raised in Salute , keep the first half engrossing. In the portions where the action moves away from Aravind’s involvement with these men, it dips because it is too focused on Aravind, and as it happens, this is also where the narrative is needlessly expanded.

The women in Salute , like women in most men-centric commercial Indian cinema, are marginal and few. This is particularly disappointing because Rosshan Andrrews, Bobby and Sanjay have done better by their female characters – central and supporting – in the past. Case in point: How Old Are You? with which Manju Warrier made her return to acting after a long break.

For a film that is this polished overall, the awkward dubbing for Diana Penty’s character Dia and the under-par acting by a bit-part player in the role of Aravind’s superior’s wife, stick out like reddened thumbs. The saving grace of Dia’s presence in the script is the scene in which Aravind tells his conservative family that she is his “partner”.

One reason why Salute works even through its missteps is the atmosphere the director manages to build with the aid of Jakes Bejoy’s music and DoP Aslam K Purayil’s frames that smoothly shift from the personal to the panoramic and back when the need arises. The other is Salmaan himself who remains thoroughly invested in his character’s dilemmas from beginning to end. His expressive face conveys Aravind’s inner conflicts as he finds himself being drawn into appalling police practices, shocked at the heartlessness of a loved one and subsequently when he realises that his reparation will cause great damage to that person.

Manoj K Jayan and Alencier Ley Lopez, the only other actors in the film with substantial screen time, are just as effective in portraying evil with shades of grey.

Last year, director Manu Ashokan’s Kaanekkaane dealt with the extraordinary lapses of conscience that seemingly ordinary, decent people are capable of. Salute is about what happens when the conscience awakens and an individual decides to set things right. Like Aravind Karunakaran, the film too slips and falls, but it manages to pick itself up well enough to be worth watching.

Salute is streaming on SonyLIV.

Salute Malayalam Movie

In the Rosshan Andrrews film, Salute, Dulquer Salmaan plays a sub-inspector who reopens a twin-murder case that he could not solve the first time. SI Aravind Karunakaran is driven by a staunch commitment to knowing the truth and justice. He has all the qualities to be a good cop, but a corrupt system stands in his way.

Political pressure makes the cops in the movie use amoral means to nab a person they are convinced is guilty. But Aravind is so certain about the innocence of the man that he eventually feels guilty of framing an innocent man. When things do not go according to how he wants, Arvind takes a long leave of absence.

The movie begins with Arvind as a cop on leave investigating an old case. We later realize that it is his guilt and a mysterious series of events that make him return to service and pursue the unsolved crime case.

Salute is not your cookie-cutter thriller with cliches, red herrings and phony suspense. It is more of a police procedural with a somewhat predictable result. It is not a standard whodunit in that there is more emphasis on truth and justice than the identity of the killer. The killer may be any person, but the focus here is on the moral predicament of the cop.

Salute is not a perfect film. Director Rosshan Andrrews seems to have written the film for the big screen. It explains an obligatory action scene that comes in the middle of the film to make the audience clap for the hero. In other words, it is there to please Dulquer Salmaan fans.

The way of investigation here does not rely on scientific methods. It means that Salute is an old-school chase movie. It relies a bit too much on coincidences. At a point, you will start to feel that Arvind is chasing Dulquer's own imposter character in Kurup.

The women characters have little to do here. Saniya Iyappan and Lakshmy Gopalaswamy only fill up the screen. On the other hand, Hindi film actor Diana Penty makes her debut in Malayalam cinema with the obligatory role of the lead actor's love interest. Even if you remove Diana's character from the movie, it would not be less interesting. It is not to say that the actress does a bad job.

I also have a slight issue with a specific aspect of the climax. Working from a Bobby-Sanjay script, Rosshan Andrrews maintains a gripping feel throughout and extracts a riveting performance from Dulquer Salmaan. The director handles the investigative part of the movie well throughout. It is just that I expected the protagonist to make a specific decision at the end, but he goes against the norm. It is no big issue as the whole movie never depends on that one piece of information.

Salute feels familiar yet somewhat unconventional in that it explores the morality of the protagonist. What benefits the film greatly is Dulquer Salmaan's performance. Manoj K. Jayan, Binu Pappu and Alencier Ley Lopez are also very good in their respective roles. But the film depends greatly on Dulquer, and he delivers the goods.

The actor could explore the moral complexity of his character more deeply here but is always riveting on screen. Dulquer can let the audience know what his character is thinking without relying too much on dialogues. Dulquer brings out the anger, the frustration and the guilt of his character at the appropriate moments. There is one moment where Aravind looks at an object and then at a character and gives him a wry smile. At that moment, I thought to myself, 'I know what is on his mind'. It is a riveting performance that holds this film together.

Salute Movie Review: Dulquer Salmaan's Cop Drama Is Realistic, Unconventional & Intriguing

Salute , the highly anticipated Dulquer Salmaan-starrer is finally released on Sony LIV. The cop drama marks the actor-producer's first collaboration with the renowned filmmaker Rosshan Andrrews and writer duo Bobby-Sanjay. Bankrolled by Dulquer Salmaan's home banner Wayfarer Films, Salute also marks the Malayalam debut of Bollywood actress Diana Penty.

Aravind Karunakaran (Dulquer Salmaan) is a young and intelligent police officer who joins the force and works under his elder brother and senior officer Ajith Karunakaran (Manoj K Jayan). However, the investigation of a murder case changes the equation between the brothers, and this eventually leads to Aravind's temporary exit from the police force. But, he continues the investigation on his own. How this case affects Aravind's life and career and where it leads him, forms the crux of Salute .

Salute Movie Review: Dulquer Salmaans Cop Drama Is Realistic, Unconventional & Intriguing | Salute Review | Salute Review And Rating

Script & Direction

Director Rosshan Andrrews and writers duo Bobby-Sanjay is back with yet another police story, that is truly unconventional yet right realistic. Salute is not the usual police story that gives its viewers major adrenalin-pumping moments. Instead, it is a film that focuses on real-life and even the "powerlessness" of the police force, which is quite contrary to the popular belief. Here we get a set of real humans in police uniforms. They struggle with the pressure from politicians and have deadlines to meet.

At the same time, Salute also effectively narrates the clash of two policemen, who happen to be brothers yet stand in the opposite poles with their ideologies. The biggest plus of this Rosshan Andrrews film is that it effectively blends the police story with a family drama without going overboard. There are some extremely well-written and conceived scenes that define the sibling's bond and relationships, without a touch of melodrama. When it comes to the investigation part, writers duo Bobby-Sanjay's well-written screenplay let the scenes unfold organically and that keeps the viewers hooked to the screen.

But Salute has its flaws too. The slow-paced narrative of the film is not something that will work for everyone. The dialogues, at certain places, become a bit too dramatic thus diluting the overall impact. The film has a large star cast - but only a very few actors get a defined role or scope to perform. Especially when it comes to the women, most of the characters are treated more like props. But all these factors don't prevent Salute from emerging as an intriguing cop drama.

Salute OTT Release Date And Time On SonyLIV: Here's What You Should Know!

Peformances

Dulquer Salmaan and his solid performance are the heart and soul of Salute . The actor successfully underplays his boyish charm and gets into the skin of a young police officer. Aravind Karunakaran's thirst to do the right thing and his struggles to find the truth is brilliantly portrayed by Dulquer, who shows immense growth as an actor.

Manoj K Jayan once again amazes as the man who is torn between the roles of a senior police officer and doting elder brother. Dulquer and Manoj's exceptional camaraderie is one of the biggest strengths of this Rosshan Andrrews directorial. Diana Penty makes a decent Malayalam debut with Salute and has neatly played her part. The rest of the star cast, including Indrans, Shaheen Siddique, Alencier Ley Lopez, Sudheer Karamana, Boban Alummoodan, Deepak Parambol, Irshad, Binu Pappu, Lakshmi Gopalaswamy, Saniya Iyappan, and others are good in their respective roles.

Dulquer Salmaan Banned By FEUOK After Salute Goes The OTT Way

Technical Aspects

Aslam K Purayil, the cinematographer has created the perfect backdrop for the intriguing cop drama with his effective visualisation. A Sreekar Prasad has done a fine job with the editing. Jakes Bejoy, on the other hand, once again proves his expertise in handling the background music, with the fantastic score of Salute .

Salute is a realistic, unconventional, and intriguing cop drama that dares to take a different route. This Dulquer Salmaan starrer is definitely worth a watch.

Salute movie review: Dulquer Salmaan film is both a police procedural and a family drama

Salute is about a cop's fight within the system and his own family, and him powerlessly watching his superiors create and destroy evidence to safeguard their own lives. it's about guilt, courage, and redemption..

salute movie review tamil

Dulquer Salmaan in Salute. (IMDB)

When it comes to exploring police procedural dramas, Malayalam cinema always had a good track record — from Yavanika, Kariyilakkattu Pole, CBI series, FIR, Mukham, Eee Thanutha Veluppan Kalathu to the recent Nayattu. Salute that way is a straight up police procedural drama, but the treatment is distinctive. It’s also about a cop’s fight within the system and his own family, and him powerlessly watching his superiors create and destroy evidence to safeguard their own lives. It’s about guilt, courage, and redemption.

We are introduced to SI Aravind Karunakaran, right from the first scene, where he casually saunters into a police station and asks for some old case files. As he waits for the files to be delivered, we are privy to his past, as an eager, ambitious, temperamental, and honest SI who is yet to be tainted by the vile power games of the system. Directed by Roshan Andrews (written by Bobby-Sanjay), the narrative takes its own sweet time to unravel the drama.

SI Aravind Karunakaran (Dulquer Salmaan) initially comes across as impulsive and brash. When a few goons rough up his elder brother, Dy. S.P Ajith Karunakaran (Manoj K Jayan), his first instinct is to walk out of the station and bash them up. He idolizes his elder brother to such an extent that he discontinues his law education to pursue IPS just to follow in his footsteps.

But soon the rose-tinted glasses crack when he realises that some relationships and life truths aren’t as translucent as it appears to be.

When a homicide case is bungled at the hands of his superiors (headed by his brother), Aravind despite showing his outrage finds himself corroborating with the team. He watches mutely as the brother he worshipped coldly makes him understand the brutality of the system and how they are all mere pawns. What really worked in Salute is the conflict of interest between the brothers. It’s to the point, stripped of melodrama but with undercurrents of tension. When a reluctant Aravind talks to his brother over the phone after a long hiatus, the voice on the other end is deceptively casual, calmly ordering him to be on time for his niece’s wedding. When he drops in with his girlfriend, Ajith offers help in officiating their wedding. But once he realises that Aravind plans to start from where they stopped, the mask quickly falls. When Ajith lets him know that he isn’t welcome at his niece’s wedding, Aravind as always remains quiet. But strangely we aren’t taking sides here because we know Ajith is more a hostage of a political system that has made him ethically incapacitated. He shows more empathy towards his colleague who is scared of getting caught and assures him. We feel equally empathetic towards Aravind, who is unable to erase his guilt despite voluntarily taking leave from his job.

Diana Penty, in the role of Aravind’s live-in-partner, is probably the worst miscasting of the year. She hardly adds anything to the narrative, and the portions showing her interactions with Aravind’s family were also lame. Save for the actors who play the role of cops (Binu Pappu, Vijayakumar, and Alencier), the rest were all props. Especially the women—be it Lakshmi Gopalaswamy and Sania Iyyappan in shockingly inconsequential roles.

The procedural portions are slow footed, though the earlier piece that had cops “planting evidence” was sharp and uneasy. But one felt Aravind’s characterisation didn’t validate some of the scenes accorded to him. The scene involving Aravind and the newly appointed SI at a police station for instance. When he salutes him out of reverence, one wonders where it comes from considering Aravind nearly flees from his job out of his own inability to fight against the system. Add to the fact that his own team members didn’t take him seriously and saw him more as the spoilt younger brother of their superior.

Dulquer Salmaan mirrors the guilt and anger of Aravind with ease and essays the first police role of his career without any glitches. Strangely one couldn’t dodge the feeling that Dulquer’s cop must have been trailing the elusive Sukumara Kurup in Kurup (which was also played by Dulquer Salmaan). Manoj K Jayan is perfectly cast as elder brother Ajith and convincingly pulls off the moral ambiguities attached to his character. Salute keeps the proceedings mostly engaging and straightforward though one felt the closure (between the brothers) didn’t quite match up to what the film stood for. It felt too convenient.
