Guidelines for Research Reports and Integrative Lit Reviews   |  Samples of Research  Reports  |  Samples of Integrative Lit Reviews  | Reviewers’ Expectations

About Research Reports

The most commonly published format in the IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication, these articles report quantitative, qualitative, critical, and mixed methods studies  and their results. Examples include experiments, textual analyses, content analyses, surveys, design research, interview-based studies, usability tests, and ethnographies.

About Integrative Literature Reviews

A new type of research report actively sought for the IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication, integrative literature reviews are  an empirical research report that systematically collects, classifies, and analyzes a body of literature on a topic.  As part of the research report, authors of integrative literature reviews describe the methodology used to search, choose and code studies, and focus on providing a critique or interpretation rather than just reporting data.  Popular in other disciplines because they succinctly summarize and empirically assess all of the literature on a particular topic, these types of articles are actively recruited by the Transactions .

Guidelines:

Note : We recognize that, in our effort to focus on readers and be clear with authors, our guidelines are extensive and directive. We hope, however, this detailed guidance provides authors with the strongest possible guidance and ensures the most positive outcome possible from the peer-review process.

Formatting References Follow the IEEE style for formatting references, which differs from the APA and MLA styles that are more widely used among professional communicators. For instructions on formatting references, see .

This section situates this study within the larger body of literature. Although professional communication is an interdisciplinary field and readers have eclectic interests, the one thing that connects readers of this journal is their interest in professional communication. Therefore, make sure that the literature review situates the study within the larger conversation on professional communication.
Immediately following the Literature Review heading,  add a short paragraph that provides a preview of the Literature Review section.  The paragraph should follow this format: SENTENCE 1: In 30 to 40 words, state the overall purpose of the section. SENTENCE 2: This section starts with
Start the Literature Review with a sub-section that has the title:Theoretical Orientation
In the Theoretical Orientation section, describe the theoretical orientation underlying the study. Some of the theory presented later should be moved to this section.
Next, explain how you selected literature to include in the review.Explicitly state which topics were chosen (and, if they were not mentioned in the discussion of the theoretical framework, explain why you chose them):

Then, theme by theme, present the relevant literature as it relates to this study.
If you are presenting a qualitative study, end the discussions of each topic with the suggestion of a relationship that will be explored in the study. Do yet present the research questions.
If you are reporting a quantitative, hypothesis testing study:

For each hypothesis tested, you might state something like, “Based on the relationship between A and B suggested in the literature, we propose this hypothesis: STATE THE HYPOTHESIS.”

Note that readers of the come from a wide variety of research traditions. So regardless of the methods employed in your study, a large group of readers will have limited experience with them. To help them follow the study—and to provide other researchers with as much information as possible so that they could replicate the study (a purpose of all research reporting)—the Methodology reporting is expanded.  Some of it is to bring about transparency, some of it is to bring about greater clarity to all of the readers.
Immediately following the Methodology heading, add a short paragraph that provides a preview of the Methodology section.  The paragraph should follow this format: SENTENCE 1: In 30 to 40 words, state the overall purpose of the section. SENTENCE 2: This section starts with
If you are not conducting a study in which hypotheses are being tested (which are presented at the end of the Literature Review section), repeat the research questions.
Next add a section, Choice of Research Methodology. In it, explain the choice of the research method chosen and why you chose it over other quantitative, qualitative or critical methodologies.
Next explain how the study was conducted.Note that many authors often mix methods and results in this section.  Please only explain the data was collected, do not report data was collected.  That will be reported in the Results section.
When describing how the data was collected, include information about each of the following though the order will vary depending on the nature of the study:

provide detailed, descriptive information about the actual participants.  Save that information for the Results section. : Only explain how the data was collected—do not report any of the data that was collected.  Hold that for the results section. : The use of software is not a data analysis procedure.  It is merely a tool to assist with the process.  However, the tool should be named in the data analysis section as the tool used.
Present the data collected and its analysis in this section.
Start the section with a short paragraph that provides a preview of the Results section.  The paragraph should follow this format. SENTENCE 1: In 30 to 40 words, state the overall purpose of the section. SENTENCE 2: This section starts with
The nature of the reporting varies, depending on the nature of the study.  Here are some suggestions that cover the types of research most commonly presented in the
Hypothesis testing:

Avoid providing readers with “statistics before [readers] get any narrative sense of outcomes or significance. Frontload narrative, background and support with the math. The ‘story’ of this study needs to be told in a way that makes the reading” easy.

Qualitative study:

This section closes the article by describing the broader implications of the study. This section has 3 separate sub-sections:

The sub-sections should be presented in this order.

Conclusions.  Present the implications of the findings within the larger context of professional communication.Link the conclusions back to the literature cited earlier.  In some research traditions, this is called the Discussion.
Limitations should openly acknowledge all of the limitations of the article. Some typical issues that need to be addressed:

Close the article with suggestions for future research that would build on this one.
Do not place an additional set of Conclusions at the end of the article.
Please write the Abstract as a structured abstract.  Research has shown that these types of abstracts help readers better remember the article. The format for a structured abstract for a research article or integrative literature review is:

Summarize your purpose and rationale (1 to 2 sentences)
Explicitly state the research questions

How to cite in IEEE style

IEEE style is a way of citing your sources by listing them all in a numbered reference list at the end of your paper and referring to them with the corresponding number in the text.

IEEE stands for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the organization responsible for the guidelines. The style is widely used in engineering, computer science, and other technical disciplines, and it’s followed in IEEE’s publications.

Scribbr’s free citation generator can create accurate IEEE style citations for a wide variety of sources.

IEEE references

The numbered reference page appears at the end of your text, listing full information on all the sources you’ve cited. Sources are numbered in the order in which they were cited.

A reference tends to list the author , title , publisher or publication that contains the source, publication date , and URL and DOI if relevant.

Reference examples

The exact information included in a reference varies based on the source type you’re citing. Different details are relevant and available for different sources.

Explore the tabs to see formats and examples for common source types.

FormatAuthor initial(s). Last name. “Page title.” Website Name. URL (accessed Month Day, Year).
Example[1] M. McGrath. “Climate change: ‘Sand battery’ could solve green energy’s big problem.” BBC News. https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-61996520 (accessed Jul. 5, 2022).

When some of the information you need for the reference is missing, you can work around this in various ways, depending on what information is not available.

Missing elementWhat to doExample
No authorStart the reference with the source title instead.[1] “What is academic writing? | Dos and don’ts for students.” Scribbr. https://www.scribbr.com/category/academic-writing/ (accessed Nov. 7, 2022).

IEEE in-text citations

In-text citations in IEEE style consist of the number of the relevant reference, presented in square brackets [1]. You should stick to one of these styles, not a mix of the two. Include a citation whenever you quote or paraphrase a source.

Each source has one number. If you cite the same source repeatedly, use the same number each time.

Incorporating citations into sentences

Citations in IEEE can either just be placed at the relevant point in the sentence (e.g., after the author name or after a quote), or they can be incorporated into the sentence structure by treating them like nouns (essentially replacing the name of the author or study).

In either case, multiple sources cited at the same point are separated by commas or by an en dash (for a range of consecutively numbered sources). This punctuation appears outside the brackets.

Parenthetical citationsCitations treated as nouns
Single citationOiva [1] suggests that …[1] suggests that …
Multiple citationsMultiple sources [3], [5], [10] indicate …[3], [5], and [10] indicate …
Range of citationsAccording to several studies [11]–[14], …According to [11]–[14], …

Page numbers and other locators

When you quote or paraphrase a specific part of a source, include a page number or range within the brackets to point the reader to the relevant passage.

For sources without page numbers where it’s still important to indicate a specific part, use an alternate locator like a paragraph number. For a short source with no locators, it’s fine to just leave this part out.

LocatorExample
No locator[1]
Single page[2, p. 34]
Multiple pages[3, pp. 12, 15–22]
Other locators[4, para. 6], [5, Chs. 5–7], [6, Fig. 1]

Review process

The review process will have two cycles.

Review Cycle I (Submission to Initial notification)

  • Conditionally accept as IEEE TVCG paper. Continuing our cooperation with the IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (TVCG), the top submissions will be considered for publication in a special issue of IEEE TVCG.
  • Conditionally accept as conference paper. These submissions will be considered for inclusion in the Proceedings of IEEE VR, archived in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library.
  • Recommend as a two-page poster. Authors of a submission receiving this recommendation have the option of condensing their submission into a two-page poster, including references. Subject to a final approval by the Posters chairs, accepted posters will be included in the IEEE VR Abstracts and Workshops proceedings and will be archived in the IEEE Digital Library. Note that IEEE VR does not consider posters as a final disclosure of research results. Thus, work accepted as an IEEE VR poster might be eligible for inclusion in future publications.

Review Cycle II (Initial notification to Final decision)

The revision of each conditionally accepted paper will be reviewed by its coordinator, who will make a final recommendation regarding acceptance. Should the conditions for acceptance not be met, the paper will be rejected.

Additional Guidelines

Abstract Submission. Note that a paper abstract must be uploaded seven days prior to the actual paper submission deadline. This facilitates the process of assigning reviewers, as the review process operates on a very tight schedule.

Ethics and Responsibility. All submissions describing research experiments with human participants must follow the appropriate ethical guidelines required by the authors’ institution(s), and authors are required to secure and report their approval by the relevant ethics committee prior to collecting data. An approval by any ethical review board, if required by your institution, needs to be indicated via the submission system. Authors will be required to submit the name of the ethical review board, approved protocol title and number, and date that ethical approval was obtained prior to running human participants. Authors must be able to provide proof of ethical approval upon request. Incorrect reporting of ethical approval will result in desk rejection.

  • Research that aims to benefit a general population should be representative of that population. (e.g. balanced across gender or age). Research that claims to benefit a specific population should clearly state and justify its focus on that population (e.g. pilots, surgeons).
  • All submissions must report participant demographics (gender, age, etc.).

Notes about recruiting representative populations:

  • Recruiting more diverse samples does not imply that the research must treat these data as independent variables and analyze differences in independent variables between demographic groups.
  • Recruiting more diverse samples does not increase the number of participants required for adequate statistical power given an effect size.
  • Many ethics review boards and funding sources already require participant diversity for inclusive and unbiased research.

The VR 2025 program committee and external reviewers will be strongly encouraged to consider participant diversity in relation to the generality of the claims made by a submission as a first-order reviewing concern. Submissions that make general claims yet rely on a severely imbalanced participant groups may be negatively impacted by the reviewing process.

Review Duties for Authors. The increasing number of submissions for IEEE VR makes us all dependent on a large number of good reviewers who are willing to provide constructive feedback and engage with authors on their work. Every paper needs three quality reviews. To expand the reviewing pool and to promote quality reviews, for each submitted paper, one author will be required to register to review up to three papers through PCS at the time of submission. For example, if the same author group submits two papers, they need to commit to reviewing six papers. Additionally, senior authors are encouraged to ask experienced junior authors to register in PCS to review papers, and then to mentor the junior authors during the review process.

Presentation at the Conference. All accepted submissions must be presented orally at the conference. An in-person presentation is expected, and online presentations will be accommodated only in exceptional cases. Requests for online presentations due to exceptional cases must be made at least one month before the conference.

Submission Language. All paper submissions must be in English.

Previous Publication and Plagiarism. Submitted manuscripts must not have been previously published. A manuscript is considered to have been previously published if it has appeared in a peer-reviewed journal, magazine, book, or meeting proceedings that is reliably and permanently available afterward in print or electronic form to non-attendees, regardless of the language of that publication. A manuscript identical or substantially similar in content (in its entirety or in part) to one submitted to VR should not be simultaneously under consideration for another conference or journal during any part of the VR review process, from the submission deadline until notifications of decisions are emailed to authors.

  • non peer-reviewed works that are publicly available (on arXiv, as a technical report, etc.)
  • non-archival publications presented in past IEEE VR conferences (posters, demos, etc.)

Submissions will be checked for plagiarism using IEEE Crosscheck. Detection of significant plagiarism will lead to rejection. For more information about definitions of plagiarism and IEEE policies in this area, please see the Introduction to the Guidelines for Handling Plagiarism Complaints and the IEEE Publication Services and Products Board Operations Manual .

AI-generated Text. Large-scale language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT can only be used by the authors to edit grammar of their own text.

Submission Anonymity. * IEEE VR uses a DOUBLE-BLIND review process * This means that both the authors and the reviewers must remain anonymous to each other. Submissions (including citations and optional videos) must not contain information that identifies the authors, their institutions, funding sources, or their places of work. Relevant previous work by the authors must be cited in the third person to preserve anonymity (exceptions were described above). Authors should work diligently to ensure that their submissions do not expose their identities either intentionally or through carelessness. Authors that have questions/issues around the double-blind submission policy should contact the program chairs.

* Failure to make reasonable attempts to adhere to the double-blind policy will result in desk rejection. *

Pre-dissemination through public online repositories. Uploading the submitted manuscript to an online repository (e.g., arXiv) before the end of the review process does not constitute a reason for rejecting the manuscript. However, the authors should be advised that doing so can compromise the anonymity of their manuscript and therefore bias its double-blind review.

Videos. Videos must be submitted according to the instructions on the submission website. Videos submitted with papers will automatically be considered for possible inclusion in the video proceedings (video submissions may also be made independently, as described in the separate Call for Videos). When submitted as supporting material, videos must be free of any identifying information prior to reviewing as per the double-blind submission policy. If accepted for the video proceedings, a revised version of the materials will be requested.

This prestigious award recognizes top technical papers at the conference. His paper was selected out of the 306 total submissions eligible for this award this year.

His paper, “Beyond Planar: An Additively Manufactured, Origami-Inspired Shape-Changing, and RFIC-Based Phased Array for Near-Limitless Radiation Pattern Reconfigurability in 5G/mm-Wave Applications,” was co-authored by fellow ECE Ph.D. candidates Chenhao Hu and Nathan Wille, in collaboration with George Mason University Electrical and Computer Engineering professor Kai Zeng.

Al Jamal and his team successfully demonstrated the first-ever additively manufactured, origami-inspired, shape-changing phased array at mm-wave frequencies, showcasing near-limitless reconfigurability. This work represents a significant leap, opening impactful opportunities for the advancement of massive MIMO and beyond-5G communication.

An origami-inspired, shape-changing phased array combines this traditional antenna function with the ability to electronically control the direction of the signal and mechanically change its shape through folding structures inspired by origami. This makes the antenna highly adaptable.

Al Jamal has been enrolled in the ECE Ph.D. program since 2022, and is a member of the ATHENA Lab , where he is advised by ECE Professor Manos Tentzeris .

He received his bachelor’s degree in electrical and computer engineering from the American University of Beirut with high distinction.

His research interests include the use of additive manufacturing techniques in designing highly integrated, heterogeneous, and conformal/flexible RF systems encompassing RF front-end circuits, antennas, and packaging up to mm-wave frequencies. He is also keen on advocating engineering education to high school and undergraduate students.

Through his research, Al Jamal aspires to design and build communication devices and RF electronics that draw inspiration from origami and art, leading to enhanced functionality and physical flexibility to seamlessly integrate with human-centered devices, thereby enabling more efficient and integrated communication networks for digital awareness.

IEEE Transactions on Terahertz Science and Technology is a peer-reviewed journal that features publications by the world’s top researchers and engineers in the field of microwaves. The Best Paper Award examines all articles published in IEEE Transactions on Terahertz Science and Technology prior to the year under evaluation and selects them based on evaluation standards such as technological excellence, significance of contribution, and presentation. This year, the award was given to a research paper on a compact terahertz device 2 developed by Canon that had been published in 2022. The award recipients were bestowed with a plaque at a banquet during the IEEE MTT-S International Microwave Symposium (IMS) held in Washington, D.C. on June 19, 2024 (local time).

Terahertz waves are a type of electromagnetic wave that possess a wavelength between that of electric waves and light while possessing characteristics of both. Compared with X-rays, they are ideal for scanning through the surface of objects without causing exposure to radiation. For this reason, the technology is expected to be utilized for security purposes, and there is also ongoing experimentation towards the use of terahertz waves in next-generation 6G signal transmission systems. The terahertz device developed by Canon, which is approximately 1000x smaller 3 than conventional devices, is capable of transmitting terahertz waves farther and with greater intensity toward the intended direction. Going forward, Canon will continue to develop technology that will contribute to the transformation and further development of society.
