Bond University

Bond University is set on a 49.86 hectare campus at Robina on Queensland’s Gold Coast. Created in the traditions of the world’s leading private universities, a series of grand sandstone faculty buildings line a landscaped promenade leading down to the tranquil man-made lake. Lecture theatres, case study rooms and tutorial rooms are conveniently located in the University Centre building; several student restaurants, cafes and bars circle the lake; and on-campus accommodation is within easy walking distance of all university faculties. The study facilities here are world-class, incorporating high-tech lecture theatres, the latest broadband and wifi computer connections, and libraries that are ranked among Australia’s best. Complementing these academic features, you’ll find a comprehensive selection of recreational and social outlets that encourage interaction between students outside the classroom.

Degree structure, grading and more

How bond's degrees are structured.

Bond’s diplomas, undergraduate and graduate programs are all made up of credit points (CPS):

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMSGRADUATE PROGRAM
Diploma80 CPSGraduate Certificate40 CPS
Bachelor240 – 360 CPSGraduate Diploma80 CPS
Honours Year80 – 90 CPSMasters120 – 160 CPS
Doctorate240 CPS
PATHWAY PROGRAMSHIGHER DEGREE BY RESEARCH
Foundation Program80 CPSMaster of PhilosophyMin 2 years
Diploma Preparation30 CPSDoctor of Philosophy (PhD)Min 4 years

Most subjects/courses are worth 10 CPS, but some are worth five or 15 or 20 CPS. The standard 10 CPS subjects generally equate to three or four credits in the US system.

Most bachelor's degrees are worth 240 CPS or the equivalent of 24 subjects and the average master's degree is 120 CPS or 12 subjects.

A condition of your Australian Student Visa is that you must be enrolled as a full-time student. In Australia, that usually means four subjects per semester. As such, you can finish a standard 24-subject bachelor's degree in two years and a master’s in one to two years at Bond University.

Higher Degrees by Research (HDR) like the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) work a bit differently. They are based on completing a major research dissertation or thesis and usually take around two years for an MPhil and four years for a PhD at Bond.

In Australia, the university system doesn’t require two years of general education as you have in the USA. At Bond, however, every bachelor's degree includes three University Core subjects covering key employability and life skills:

  • Critical Thinking and Communication;
  • Collaboration, Teams and Leadership; and
  • Responsibility, Integrity and Civic Discourse

All Bond undergraduate students also take part in Beyond Bond  – a program of extracurricular activities of your choice, where recognition is given for things like volunteering, taking part in competitions, being active in social clubs, and so on.

usually English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Social Studies may be substituted for an academic subject.

Bond University's SAT school code is 5345 and the ACT school code is 5370.

INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE

IB students will need a score range from 28 to 32, depending on the program you are applying to. You are not required to provide an SAT or ACT score.

UNDERGRADUATE TRANSFERS

If you have already completed at least two (2) semesters of college, entry will be based on your college transcripts only. A GPA of 2.0 or higher is usually required for undergraduate transfer.

GRADUATE ADMISSION

Admission to graduate programs is generally based on having successfully completed a relevant undergraduate degree and/or significant work experience in a relevant field.

A condition of your Australian Student Visa is that all international students must take a full time study load, usually equivalent to four subjects per semester.

On average, you’ll spend between three and four hours each week in class for each subject. That could be in lectures, tutorials, seminars or labs. You’ll also spend extra hours working on additional reading, assignments, group projects, research, study and review.

Bond’s grading system works on a four-point scale as follows:

GradeDescription% mark rangeUS Equivalent
4High Distinction85 – 100A+
3Distinction75 – 84A
2Credit65 – 74B
1Pass50 – 64C

Bond University’s degrees are recognized globally and accredited by professional bodies worldwide.

Those degrees that have licensing requirements to practice (e.g. law, accounting, medicine, psychology, physical therapy, occupational therapy) can be transferred back to the USA with a few extra steps.

Accounting – GAA membership

Bond’s Accounting program is professionally accredited by Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand. CAANZ, in turn, is a member of the Global Accounting Alliance (GAA) which also includes the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). Through the GAA, members of CAANZ receive automatic membership of AICPA and all other GAA affiliate organisations worldwide.

In some states, such as California and New York, graduates with an Australian law degree ( Bachelor of Laws , Juris Doctor ) are eligible to sit for the Bar exam and gain admission to practice.

For other states, you have to sit for the bar in Australia and be admitted before you can sit for the law exam in your state,

You should also be aware that some US states don’t admit anyone with a non-USA law degree.

Admission in each state is controlled by the local state bar association and the State Supreme Court. The most up-to-date information is available on the American Bar Association website.

Allied health degrees

In the USA, international degrees in allied health disciplines such as physical therapy / physiotherapy, occupational therapy, etc. must first be assessed by the relevant national body to ensure they are equivalent to a USA degree. Graduates can then apply to sit an exam which gives them a licence to practice.

Personal profile

Research interests.

My research interests include the law relating to central banking, the legal aspects of distributed ledger technologies (including cryptocurrencies), civil remedies, international commercial arbitration, and legal education, including the pedagogical benefits of mooting. My PhD thesis is on the regulatory framework of the Reserve Bank of Australia's mandate for financial stability.

I am currently an Associate Professor and Associate Dean (Student Affairs and Service Quality) at Bond University.

I joined Bond University in May 2006, after serving as Senior Legal Counsel for the South African Reserve Bank for 11 years, heading the Corporate, Commercial and Employment Law section. I previously worked as a commercial specialist at SASOL (a large petro-chemical company in South Africa) for approximately 5 years, focusing on the negotiating and drafting of various commercial contracts. I started my working life as a lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Pretoria, before being appointed as editor and translator at Sanlam (a large South African insurance company) and the South African Reserve Bank, before switching to law and commercial work.

At Bond University, I have taught private law subjects (mostly Civil Remedies, Contracts and Torts), as well as the elective subjects Banking and Finance Law and International Contracts. I have served as Director of Mooting in the Faculty of Law from 2013 to 2020, and have coached many award-winning moot teams. I have coached team for the Willem C Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot Competition (and Vis East) since 2009 and have acted as judge for written submissions and oral arguments.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA
