Therefore, students are required to articulate clearly their proposed research which must be interdisciplinary in nature. This PhD program equips researchers and responds directly to challenges. As the focus is put on interdisciplinary, students are required within their proposal to clearly and substantively articulate how and in what ways the proposed research is interdisciplinary in nature. The offer of a place to the program depends on the availability of co-supervision from two staff members from different disciplines, in relation to the student’s proposal. Students are required to identify this in the ‘proposed supervisor’ section of their application. When it comes to the funding and fees, the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law allocates 1+3 and +3 ESRC scholarships, while students can also apply for other types of funding from the University of Bristol scholarship fund or alumni PhD scholarship fund. Funding is quite competitive and it is available for exceptional research proposals. The tuition fee is $20,152 per year for international students and $5,441 for EU or EEA citizens. However, University of Bristol students and graduates can benefit from a ten per cent reduction in tuition feels for postgraduate study. The application deadline is not fixed for students who wish to apply as self-funded, while the closing date for ESRC scholarships is usually open until the end of January. The PhD in Security, Conflict and Human rights equips students for a number of different careers. During the years, the students got employment in areas of academia, international security, development and conflict issues, and they have worked as policy researchers, consultants, policy civil servants or the military. Human Rights PhD – University of SussexThis PhD program in Human rights goes beyond a narrow legalistic approach. Admitted students are supposed to work under the supervision of faculty experts, while focusing on human rights area in the fields of poverty, violence, identity, globalization, the emergence of global forms of governance etc. Duration of this PhD program is 4 years if enrolled full time or 6 years if enrolled part time. Students may also choose when they want to start – in September, January or May. In order to apply, prospective students need to write an outline research proposal four to five pages long, stating the nature, ambition, research questions and the methodology of a research proposal. On the website of the University instructions on how to write a research proposal can be found. Students can choose to study for a PhD or an MPhil. These degrees are different in duration and in the extent of research work. The PhD requires research work that will make a substantial original contribution to knowledge or understanding in a chosen field, whereas for an MPhil, student’s work is considered to be an independent piece of research but in less depth compared to PhD. Students graduate with the degree title Master of Philosophy and are able to change to a PhD while studying for an MPhil. University of Sussex offers various types of scholarships and interested students should check application deadlines for funding opportunities. There are different funding opportunities for students who have been accepted into the program. Both University of York and external funders offer financial assistance. There are also part-time employment opportunities as tutors or lecturers. Potential scholarship opportunities and other forms of assistance are discusses with students who have been admitted. Nevertheless, students should keep in mind that many scholarships have early application deadlines. During past few years, the Centre has successfully nominated and advocated on behalf of prospective students for an awarded and ESRC scholarship funding. In the case of UK students, this funding covers tuition and provides a basic stipend. For international students, this funding is limited and usually covers a certain percentage of tuition. Nevertheless, students seeking funding should apply early in the academic year since ESRC funding decisions are by April. Therefore, to be considered for funding, students should submit their applications by the end of January. 201 phd positions in lawFiltered by, refine your search.

How a PhD in Sydney can take researchers to Harvard Law School![]() Ravi Prakash Vyas Ravi Prakash Vyas, a PhD researcher at Sydney Law School, will be heading to Harvard for six months in August to complete his studies. This unique opportunity stems from his pursuit of a PhD at Sydney Law School, which not only opens many different career pathways but also allows him to participate in the prestigious partnership with Harvard Law School. Ravi's journey began with his decision to pursue his PhD at Sydney Law School. “I chose Sydney Law School to pursue my PhD in International Law as it is one of the top-ranked law schools with leading academics in the world," he says. “With Professor Ben Saul, Jeanne Huang, and Emily Crawford as my supervisory team, I could not have found a better place to pursue my research.” When asked about the benefits of completing a PhD program at Sydney Law School, Yane Svetiev, the Associate Dean (Research Education), says, “The PhD at Sydney Law School is a long-standing advanced research degree, which opens up many different career pathways. We have trained not only many academics in Australia and internationally but also practitioners working in legal practice and in national and international institutions, as well as judges. It has the added advantage of a rich network of alumni around the world.” The HDR Partnership with HarvardThe HDR partnership allows one Sydney Law School PhD candidate per year to spend a semester at Harvard Law School during their doctoral degree. This opportunity enables candidates to discuss and expose their research, test ideas before finalising their thesis, audit classes, attend seminars, and learn from other researchers. This structured exchange provides invaluable immersion in another institution, enhancing the doctoral experience. Ravi explains that the application process involves two stages. “First, HDR students must submit a statement of purpose detailing their research project, reasons for applying, the planned activities at Harvard Law, and how this experience will benefit their research and support timely degree completion,” he said. “Additionally, they need a support letter from their supervisors endorsing the application. If selected by Sydney Law School, the student then applies to Harvard Law School, which is very competitive and accepts only one candidate per year from Sydney Law School.” Ravi’s journey to HarvardRavi's research focuses on the convergence and divergence in China’s and India’s approaches to governing international peace and security and their impact on the future of international law, and therefore he is very excited about the opportunity to study at Harvard. “An exchange at Harvard is an excellent opportunity for me, as it will provide me with new insights and fresh perspectives in my research area, exposing me to leading scholars and contemporary debates. It will also enable me to utilise one of the best libraries in the world for my research,” Ravi shares. He plans to write his final chapters at Harvard, focusing on regional security and benefiting from Harvard's academic environment. Advice for ResearchersRavi strongly encourages future and current research scholars at Sydney Law School to take up this unique opportunity to undertake the HDR program at Harvard Law School. “Discuss your plans with your supervisors early to decide the optimal timing for the exchange. Ensure your applications clearly demonstrate how your research aligns with Harvard's strengths and how you can both contribute to and benefit from the exchange,” he advises. Additionally, he recommends applying for the Walter Reid Scholarship, which offers substantial support for research overseas, significantly facilitating the exchange experience. “The support from the Walter Reid Scholarship at Sydney Law School has been instrumental. My time away will give me a break from my teaching and administrative commitments, which will be highly beneficial for my PhD progress and timely completion” he shares. ![]() Professor Simon Bronitt, Ravi Prakash Vyas, and Justice Chrissa Loukas-Karisson Expanding OpportunitiesWhile the structured Harvard HDR exchange is unique, Sydney Law School encourages PhD candidates to seek opportunities to spend time at other institutions, either in Australia or internationally. The Sydney Law School provides scholarships and funding to enable these experiences for researchers. Yane Svetiev expresses that the law school is actively seeking to join the University’s joint PhD programs with other international universities, such as Glasgow and Copenhagen, to further enhance exchange opportunities for their PhD candidates. Ravi's journey from Sydney Law School to Harvard Law School is just one example of the opportunities available to researchers who choose to complete their PhDs at the Sydney Law School. The potential to make a high salary as a lawyer is often what influences students to pursue a graduate law degree. However, while a law degree can open doors to higher earnings, not all law schools provide the same return on investment. According to a study released by Georgetown University’s Center for Education and the Workforce, which ranks 186 law schools based on graduates’ salaries, if making money is a priority for a student, it’s best to shoot for highly ranked law schools. Graduates of Columbia Law School have the highest annual median earnings four years after completing ... [+] their degree, according to a new Georgetown study that ranks 186 law schools. “When it comes to law school, the best returns are concentrated among a small number of institutions, educating approximately 20 percent of law students,” said CEW Director and lead author Jeff Strohl. “Graduates earn the highest salaries from highly selective institutions. The top 26 law schools lead to six-figure salaries and a bar passage rate of 97 percent.” According to the CEW study, A Law Degree Is No Sure Thing: Some Law School Graduates Earn Top Dollar, but Many Do Not , Columbia University law graduates have the highest annual median earnings four years after completing their degree at $280,900. Following Columbia were the University of Pennsylvania with $261,400, the University of Chicago with $256,400, Cornell University with $249,300, Stanford University with $248,000 and Harvard University with $233,600. These salaries compare with National Association for Law Placement research that shows the overall median first-year associate base salary was $200,000 as of Jan. 1, 2023, up $35,000 or 21.2% from 2021. Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024. In comparison, the bottom three law schools in CEW’s 186-school ranking produced graduates whose annual median earnings four years after degree completion were $38,700, $44,100 and $58,400, respectively. The study found that at nearly 1 in 5 law schools, graduates earn less than $55,000, net of debt, four years after graduation. The difference in salary outcomes could be because graduates from top-tier law schools were more likely to secure high-paying jobs at large prestigious law firms. In fact, according to a U.S. News & World Report ranking , 80% of law school graduates of 10 highly ranked law schools who have jobs at law firms worked for large companies. CEW researchers found law schools with the highest-earning graduates send more graduates to full-time work at the nation’s largest law firms. At the seven schools where postgraduate earnings exceeded $200,000, 58% of graduates from the classes of 2020-2022 were employed in big law, compared to 16% of graduates across all 186 institutions CEW evaluated. However, earning a higher salary is not necessarily the only factor influencing students when pursuing an advanced law degree. “If a prospective student aims to land a high-paying job after earning their JD, they are more likely to achieve that goal at a certain subset of schools,” says Catherine Morris, a senior writer at CEW and one of the paper’s co-authors. “But earnings aren’t the only factor students consider: some schools might set up graduates for work in specific fields or geographic areas they’re interested in.” In addition, for many graduates, the burden of student debt can outweigh the financial benefits of a graduate law degree, particularly if they do not attend a highly ranked institution. Indeed, despite the potential for high salaries, the cost of obtaining a law degree can be significant. According to the American Bar Association, the average law school graduate in the U.S. carries more than $160,000 in student loan debt. Similarly, the CEW study found that, four years after completing their degree, law school graduates owe almost $120,000 in student debt loans at the median. In fact, at 6 out of 10 law schools, at least half of the graduates had loan balances equal to what they were at graduation. Or those balances had even increased three years, post-degree completion. “Law schools are notoriously expensive. Graduates leave law schools with a median debt burden of $118,500, and lower earnings make it harder to pay back this debt,” said CEW’s Morris. “The consequences of six-figure debt are also far-reaching for law school graduates, impacting their ability to purchase a home, start a family, and achieve other traditional markers of success.” In recent years, U.S. law schools have experienced some volatility, with student enrollments falling 11% in fall 2022 after a prior surges, according to the American Bar Association. However, with regard to jobs, the CEW study expects the future of the legal profession to remain stable. While the full impact of AI on the sector has yet to be realized, job opportunities are expected to increase, with projections of the total number of jobs associated with legal occupations rising from 1.26 million to 1.41 million between 2021 and 2031. The pipeline of students is looking stable as well. According to Law School Admission Council data , applications for the 2024 admissions cycle have decreased about 1.7% compared with last year. Almost half of law schools experienced increases in applications, while almost half had decreases, and seven showed no change from last year. ![]()

For me, ANU academics came to the rescue. Small class sizes allowed me to regularly interact with them and ask for their guidance on issues within and beyond the law. What is your degree? I am graduating from the Master of Laws (LLM), specialising in International Law and Private Commercial Law, at the ANU College of Law as an International Partners Scholar. Prior to my graduate studies, I qualified as a lawyer in India, completing my Bachelor of Arts and Laws from the National Law School of India University, Bangalore. Why did you choose to study law at ANU? A year ago, as I was considering various jurisdictions, including the US, UK, and Singapore for my postgraduate studies, one of my mentors drew my attention to Australia. I was particularly drawn to both the country and ANU due to its vast potential in terms of opportunities and the robust support structure for international students. I soon discovered that the ANU College of Law, a research-led institution with a strong emphasis on international law, aligned perfectly with my interests. Additionally, the generous scholarship grant from the College made what would have been an expensive foreign education more financially feasible. In hindsight, ANU turned out to be a pleasant surprise despite not previously being on the cards for me. This week, as I graduate and embark on my next adventure, I feel incredibly lucky and grateful for this experience which makes saying goodbye so hard! How have you felt about moving to / living in Canberra? Moving from the bustling city of Delhi to the comparatively tranquil Canberra was a huge shift. While it was not as busy as I expected, the city had its own charms. With its serene and calm environment and super approachable people, Canberra won a place in my heart sooner than I thought. While deriving its pride from retaining institutions of national importance, Canberra is also an inclusive and student-friendly city, welcoming people from all parts of the world. What have been some of the highlights studying law at ANU? This past year has been simply amazing. From adapting to minor cultural differences to writing a dissertation on a topic I had no idea about – I have grown a lot. However, a few highlights that made this year even more special for me were my academic achievements. By scoring the highest mark, I received the Dean's Prize for Outstanding Achievement in the Master of Laws. Similarly, I also received the 2023 Academic Award at Burgmann College. Are there any scholars who have been influential to you throughout your law studies? The academics at ANU are extremely supportive and approachable. They are your colleagues, mentors and support networks. Out of so many esteemed academics, it is difficult to pinpoint just one, but I cannot resist from expressing my special thanks to my Graduate Research Unit thesis supervisor, Professor Jolyon Ford. He not only played an instrumental role in guiding me through my thesis, but has gone above and beyond in his capacity to help me grapple with the ‘what next’ question after I complete my LLM. Have there been any challenging moments? How did you overcome these? Moving to a new country has its own suite of challenges. From learning directions to adapting to a new culture – it seemed that I had to restart my life from scratch. I still remember getting lost on my first day of law school and anxiously opening Google Maps for every different location of my tutorials. At first, all these small instances took me aback but gradually, the process became rather enjoyable after I realised that I am not the only one in the boat. With time, I forged friendships with people from across the world and today they continue to guide me (both literally and metaphorically). I will fondly remember and cherish the moments of exam stress, as well as the joys we shared in celebrating each other’s successes. What is your advice for prospective law students? Navigating a career in law is admittedly a difficult task and this can become especially nerve-wracking if you are an international student. For me, ANU academics came to the rescue. Small class sizes allowed me to regularly interact with them and ask for their guidance on issues within and beyond the law. Within this context, my advice to prospective law students is one that I fondly remember reading in Harry Potter – “Help will always be given at Hogwarts to those who ask for it”. Through its administration, academics and students, ANU has a wholesome support network to offer you. However, it is up to you to make the most of your time here. What is next for you beyond graduation? After graduation, I have the opportunity to either begin my law career with a multinational professional services firm in Sydney, or return to India to practice at the bar and work with leading law firms. As I weigh up these options, I am also keenly interested in exploring international dispute resolution, which is a dynamic field with ever-evolving possibilities. While I cannot foresee how my future will unfold, I believe my education at ANU has made me ready and confident to evaluate my options and embrace whatever comes my way with open arms.
