Minimum entry requirements for mphil/phd psychological and behavioural science.
The minimum entry requirement for this programme is an upper second class honours (2:1) bachelor’s degree (or equivalent), plus high merit (65+) in master's degree (or equivalent) in a relevant area.
Competition for places at the School is high. This means that even if you meet our minimum entry requirement, this does not guarantee you an offer of admission. Where an offer of admission is considered, this is always subject to an interview.
If you have studied or are studying outside of the UK then have a look at our Information for International Students to find out the entry requirements that apply to you.
We welcome applications for research programmes that complement the academic interests of members of staff at the School, and we recommend that you investigate staff research interests and contact potential supervisors before applying.
We carefully consider each application on an individual basis, taking into account all the information presented on your application form, including your:
- academic achievement (including existing and pending qualifications) - statement of academic purpose - references - CV - research proposal - sample of written work.
See further information on supporting documents
You may also have to provide evidence of your English proficiency. You do not need to provide this at the time of your application to LSE, but we recommend that you do. See our English language requirements .
The application deadline for this programme is 25 April 2024 . However, to be considered for any LSE funding opportunity, you must have submitted your application and all supporting documents by the funding deadline. See the fees and funding section for more details.
Every research student is charged a fee in line with the fee structure for their programme. The fee covers registration and examination fees payable to the School, lectures, classes and individual supervision, lectures given at other colleges under intercollegiate arrangements and, under current arrangements, membership of the Students' Union. It does not cover living costs or travel or fieldwork.
Home students: £4,786 for the first year Overseas students: £22,632 for the first year
The fee is likely to rise over subsequent years of the programme. The School charges home research students in line with the level of fee that the Research Councils recommend. The fees for overseas students are likely to rise in line with the assumed percentage increase in pay costs (ie, 4 per cent per annum).
The Table of Fees shows the latest tuition amounts for all programmes offered by the School.
The amount of tuition fees you will need to pay, and any financial support you are eligible for, will depend on whether you are classified as a home or overseas student, otherwise known as your fee status. LSE assesses your fee status based on guidelines provided by the Department of Education.
Further information about fee status classification.
The School recognises that the cost of living in London may be higher than in your home town or country, and we provide generous scholarships each year to home and overseas students.
This programme is eligible for LSE PhD Studentships . Selection for the PhD Studentships is based on receipt of an application for a place – including all ancillary documents, before the funding deadline. Funding deadline for LSE PhD Studentships: 15 January 2024
In addition to our needs-based awards, LSE also makes available scholarships for students from specific regions of the world and awards for students studying specific subject areas. Find out more about financial support.
There may be other funding opportunities available through other organisations or governments and we recommend you investigate these options as well.

Students are asked to complete 10 hours of research training each year. Courses are agreed with supervisors depending on a student's needs. Taught classes can be accessed within the Department of Psychological and Behavioural Science as well as in departments across LSE, including Methodology. Methodology courses available include Qualitative Research Methods, Survey Methodology, Applied Regression Analysis and Multivariate Analysis and Measurement. Training courses are offered through our PhD academy and with affiliate institutions. Access is subject to agreement with the relevant course convenors (eg according to space considerations).
For the most up-to-date list of optional courses please visit the relevant School Calendar page.
You must note, however, that while care has been taken to ensure that this information is up to date and correct, a change of circumstances since publication may cause the School to change, suspend or withdraw a course or programme of study, or change the fees that apply to it. The School will always notify the affected parties as early as practicably possible and propose any viable and relevant alternative options. Note that the School will neither be liable for information that after publication becomes inaccurate or irrelevant, nor for changing, suspending or withdrawing a course or programme of study due to events outside of its control, which includes but is not limited to a lack of demand for a course or programme of study, industrial action, fire, flood or other environmental or physical damage to premises.
You must also note that places are limited on some courses and/or subject to specific entry requirements. The School cannot therefore guarantee you a place. Please note that changes to programmes and courses can sometimes occur after you have accepted your offer of a place. These changes are normally made in light of developments in the discipline or path-breaking research, or on the basis of student feedback. Changes can take the form of altered course content, teaching formats or assessment modes. Any such changes are intended to enhance the student learning experience. You should visit the School’s Calendar , or contact the relevant academic department, for information on the availability and/or content of courses and programmes of study. Certain substantive changes will be listed on the updated graduate course and programme information page.
Supervision.
The supervisor you work with will be a specialist in your chosen research field, and will guide you through your studies. Prospective applicants should have the support of a potential supervisor before making a formal application to Graduate Admissions, to ensure an alignment of research interests. If contacting faculty, please be selective, and let faculty know if you are in contact with more than one member of staff.
Degrees must be completed within a maximum of four years. The time taken to complete any research degree depends on your progress and individual needs and you must remain registered with the School until your thesis has been submitted.
You register for the MPhil in the first instance, and will need to progress satisfactorily to be upgraded to PhD status.
The first year Extended Essay and the second year Upgrade chapters (see below) are examined by a three-person thesis committee, which includes your supervisor, as well as two other academic colleagues. Targets for progress First year: Extended Essay of 6,000 words, submitted on first day of Winter Term. Second year: Upgrade viva. Two draft chapters or papers of 10,000 words each (total of 20,000 words), submitted on first day of Winter Term. These chapters form the basis of an oral examination by a three-person thesis committee, usually four to six weeks after submission. Success in this examination results in upgrade from MPhil to PhD status. Third year: Completed first draft by end of three years.
The Department of Psychological and Behavioural Science allows for two formats of PhD:
This is the traditional PhD format. It entails candidates in effect producing several chapters examining a single subject in an integrated way. This is akin to the format and structure of a book.
This format entails candidates producing distinct papers which are combined with integrative material to address a single subject. The defining feature of this format is basically that some of the "chapters" can be articles which either have been published or prepared for publication. This format tends only to be suitable for PhD projects which comprise a series of distinct (but inter-related) empirical studies.
Extra guidelines for article format PhD The thesis should comprise three to six publishable articles framed by an introduction, critical integrating discussion and conclusion. Articles should be co-authored with supervisors (as are all papers written on your PhD topic while being under supervision). Articles and chapters both count as "papers" – the most important part is that they are publishable quality. They do not have to have been submitted, and even if they have been submitted and accepted this does not automatically entail that the Committee will find them suitable within the larger context of the project.

Course details.
Our MSc Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is aimed at those wishing to specialise in practical applications of behaviour analysis including positive behaviour support and behaviour analysis in education. The course is designed to develop advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of the basic principles of behaviour analysis and the application of the principles within clinical and research settings.
Behaviour analysts work in a variety of multi-disciplinary settings alongside teachers, psychologists, nurses and other professionals to help individuals and organisations meet their goals and improve quality of life.
Behaviour analysis in the UK is overseen by the UK Society for Behaviour Analysis ( UK-SBA .) The UK-SBA’s register of professionals is accredited under the Professional Standards Authority ’s Accredited Register programme. Behaviour analysis is an evolving practice and at Bangor we emphasise a values-led and person-centred approach. We endorse and adhere to the UK-SBA practice values and Code of Ethical and Professional Conduct .
Bangor University’s MSc in ABA fulfils the coursework requirements for eligibility apply to become certified behaviour analysts.
Behaviour analysis in the UK is undergoing a positive change: the certification of professionals is transitioning from the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) to the UK-SBA. Both qualifications require candidates to complete post-graduate coursework, professional supervision, and pass a qualifying exam. The BACB will continue to certify UK applicants as Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA) only until the 31 December 2025. After 1 January 2026, UK candidates will apply to become UKBA(cert) from the UK-SBA. Currently, all members of the UK-SBA who are BCBAs are eligible to become UKBA(cert).
Information for Candidates who wish to become certified by the BACB :
The Association for Behavior Analysis International has verified the MSc in ABA at Bangor University toward the coursework requirements for eligibility to take the Board Certified Behavior Analyst® or Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst® examination. Applicants will need to meet additional eligibility requirements including BACB supervision and demonstrate they reside in an authorised country before they can be deemed eligible to take the examination. In the UK, candidates must pass the qualifying exam by 31 December 2025.
Information for Candidates who wish to become certified by the UK-SBA :
The MSc ABA course at Bangor University meets the eligibility requirements for candidates to take the UKBA(cert) examination after 1 January 2026. Candidates will also be required to complete the UK-SBA Supervision and Competence Standards and pass a qualifying exam.
Students can exit the programme after achieving either a PG Certificate (60 credits) or PG Diploma (120 credits) if they don’t wish to undertake the full MSc. The full course leads to a Master’s degree, but it is designed to be flexible to meet the differing needs of our students. At Bangor University, the full MSc ABA is the only pathway offered for 2023 entry that will qualify a candidate to sit the BACB exam. Please contact us for further details.
Full-time: One year; Two years for those doing the practicum.
Full-time students take two modules each term and attend seminars on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Part-time: Two years.
Part-time students take one module at a time, and in the first year attend seminars on Mondays.
Please note: The taught element of the course runs from September-July. We expect that students will spend a full day a week engaged with each module. The workload is demanding, and the assessment periods for the full-time course can be onerous. If you have significant work or caregiving commitments, we strongly recommend that you take the course part-time over two years. It takes at least two years to earn the supervision hours towards certification and taking the coursework part-time will not delay your progress towards certification.
The course has been designed with flexible study in mind. Available study options are: fully remote learning, or a blend of independent and face-to-face learning.
During each week of the course, we will provide pre-recorded lectures and guided learning for students to access in their own time. There will also be two options for 90 minutes of live seminars per module each week: One seminar will be offered face-to-face at Bangor University during the day; A second, live, seminar will be conducted online from 18:00-19:30 UK time.
The course is designed to be flexible; students may come to Bangor and interact with their peers and lecturers in person. However, if for any reason a student cannot attend live seminars during the day, we welcome you via our remote platform in the evening.
Technical requirements for remote learning: Please note that attendance in seminars is mandatory. If you choose to attend from a distance, you MUST have access to a reliable internet connection and a device from which to attend seminars. We will expect you to turn your on cameras and participate during remote seminars. At Bangor University, we prioritise the conversations we have with our students. We feel strongly that relationships are central to the values-led practice of behaviour analysis and that the conversations and relationships that develop between students and lecturing staff can be pivotal in the development of an ethical practice of behaviour analysis.
Students may need to travel to Bangor to register in September, but all seminars and assessments may be taken from a distance. In 2023, distance learning is only available to students who are resident in the UK.
Most of our students receive the supervision element of their training as part of paid employment independent of the university. However, we do offer a practicum for those who wish to complete their practical training with the university. Practicum will run over two academic years.
Students will complete their coursework on a part-time basis and complete supervised practicum placements in educational and other settings in which behaviour analysis and positive behavioural support is used. During this time the student will have the opportunity to learn and demonstrate competencies outlined in the UK-SBA Competence Framework.
There are two practicum routes. First, students who are working with partner organisations across the UK may be eligible. These students will complete their course work while working and receiving onsite supervision from UKBA(certs) in their organisation. They will also receive supervision from UKBA(certs) from Bangor University. For the second, students based in North Wales will work in educational settings in the surrounding area. Students in these settings will gain the practical skills and knowledge required to design and implement behaviour-analytic interventions with a range of children. They will receive supervision from UKBA(certs) based in these settings and/ or university-based UKBA(certs). Instead of a thesis, practicum students will submit a portfolio. Students who have been accepted to the MSc in ABA will be invited to apply in writing at the beginning of their course, and the application process will include interviews and written statements. Places will be limited and awarded on a competitive basis.
Which certification do we recommend?
The BCBA and UKBA(cert) qualifications each have different supervision standards. At Bangor University, we recommend that students beginning in 2023 take their supervision using the UK-SBA Supervision and Competence Standards. The UK-SBA standards reflect the values and practice standards that are relevant to practice in the UK. Students who begin their studies in autumn 2023 can possibly complete the supervision required by the BACB and pass the exam before 31/12/25, however, the deadlines are very short. Please contact us for more details.
What will you study on this course.
The course consists of two parts. Part One comprises taught modules designed around the BACB Task List. The first four modules introduce the basic theory and practice of the science and the second four offer more detailed analysis of both applied and research procedures.
On successful completion of Part One, you will proceed to Part Two - a clinical research study, planned and conducted in collaboration with your BCBA-qualified research supervisor.

Admission criteria varies by program, but some programs are open to students with only a bachelor’s degree. Others may require students to have a master’s in ABA and experience working with individuals with disabilities. Some programs are offered online, but most are traditional brick and mortar programs. We considered both types when creating this ranking of the top 15 PhD in applied behavior analysis.
We created this ranking of the best PhD behavior analysis programs to showcase some of the top degrees in the country. We looked to the National Center for Education Statistics to find schools offering graduate level programs in ABA. We narrowed our focus to schools offering a PhD. We then awarded points based on factors like student/faculty ratio, average graduate tuition rate and whether they were ABAI accredited. We felt ABAI accreditation was important since it is an indicator of a quality training program.

The EdS and MS degree programs are for individuals pursuing Board Certification (i.e., BCBA Ⓡ ), and are offered on campus in Boston (MS and EdS degrees) and online (MS degree).
This is a fully remote, online doctoral program. Most classes meet once per week on weekday evenings to accommodate the needs of working professionals. At times, the department will host on-campus and hybrid events that doctoral students are invited to attend.
This program requires completion of 48 semester hours. We offer a self-paced program of study, and most students work full-time while taking two classes per semester (generally a course and a lab enrollment) to graduate in 4-7 years. To be eligible to graduate, students must complete all 6 required courses plus 3 special topics courses, and 12 hours of Dissertation Lab, in addition to successfully completing and defending their dissertation.
Candidates* eligible for admission should have the motivation and capacity to conduct and disseminate basic and applied behavior analytic research (e.g., presentations at professional conferences and publications in peer reviewed behavior analytic journals).
*Please note that the PhD program at Simmons is an online degree-seeking program. We welcome both domestic and international applicants to apply as long as said applicant is eligible based on the criteria detailed above. The PhD program is not eligible for F-1 visa sponsorship, and does not yield in eligibility for the BCBA exam.

In some sense, the dissertation process begins with admission to the doctoral program. Students are accepted into labs matching mutual research interests between faculty and students during the second semester. With the acceptance of the student into a faculty member’s lab, the requirements and landscape of the dissertation process become clear. Each student begins to discuss their research ideas with their lab faculty (chairperson of their doctoral committee) and literature reading is undertaken and experimental design conceptualized. In general, research is conducted at off-campus clinical, educational, or healthcare sites. Additional members of the student’s doctoral committee are sought and identified. In concert with lab participation, the doctoral proposal will be completed and submitted to the doctoral committee for approval. Following project approval by the Simmons Institutional Review Board (IRB), research proper can be initiated. The writing and defense of the dissertation proper represents the culmination of the student’s doctoral education, and is their gateway to a professional career as a doctor in behavior analysis.
To facilitate the shaping of research skills, each faculty member hosts a weekly lab meeting. During this meeting, students engaged in research with that faculty member discuss research progress and problems, and share insights. In addition, methodologies of behavior analytic research and important experimental results from behavior analytic literature are discussed. For each doctoral student, the meeting acts as a verbal community shaping their scientific repertoire.

Applied Behaviour Analysis has seen enormous growth over the past 15 years due to its successes in the areas of autism and developmental disabilities. ABA is unique in that it’s analytic goals are the prediction and influence of behaviour. With goals such as those, behaviour analysts are primarily concerned with one thing and one thing only — behaviour change.
Myth #6: ABA therapy promotes robotic language/behavior. Behavioral rigidity is one of the characteristics of autism, and many mental disorders. ABA treatments seek to overcome rigidity by teaching multiple exemplars and teaching for generalization to the real-world situations relevant to the individual. In the beginning of a program, responses might seem overly simplified and therefore “robotic” but you need behavior to work with, and those skills are eventually built up and transferred to naturalistic settings in a functional manner.
Myth #7: Anybody can direct an ABA treatment program. If your state covers ABA treatment, it must be overseen by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). BCBAs undergo a long course sequence in many aspects of ABA, in addition to a lengthy (1500 hours) supervised fieldwork experience.
Myth #8: Children must undergo 40-hours of ABA therapy a week to achieve a positive effect. The length and intensity of any ABA program is dependent upon the individual and his/her baseline behavioral state. As mentioned above, the key feature of ABA is it’s focus on individuals, rather than groups. ABA is not a one-size-fits-all treatment. Myth #9: ABA programs institute punishment in their teaching procedures. In the early days of ABA, punishment was used more often but today positive reinforcement is the overwhelmingly dominant mode of behaviour change. Punishment might be used in rare cases, for example, to prevent serious self-injury to oneself, but reinforcement can be used in a given situation, it will be. If punishment is absolutely necessary, reinforcement procedures targeting alternative behaviour should be in place concurrently.
Myth #10: ABA uses bribes consisting of food and toys to manipulate children’s behavior.
