About the Department

Ancient Indian History was initially taught in the Department of History, since the very inception of the University of Lucknow, over 92 years back. In 1956, it was established as a separate and independent Department of Ancient Indian History and Archaeology, with Prof C D Chatterjee as its Founder-Head. A great historian and Pali scholars, he made significant contributions in the fields of epigraphy and numismatics in general, and Asokan studies in particular. In 1982, the Government of Sri Lanka, University of Vidyodaya Pirivena, Colombo, honoured him with the degree of Tepitaka-Bharati-Essarachariya , the highest academic degree awarded by any foreigner by the University.

            Prof Chatterjee was succeeded by Prof R K Dikshit (1959-1970), whose contributions in the field of political history, particularly the history of the famous Chandella dynasty, are well-known. After him, Prof B N Puri (1971-1976), a versatile historian, became the Head of the Department. The next Head, Prof B N Srivastava (1976-1988), is known in the field of art and architecture, and also for his administrative acumen. He was followed by Prof K K Thaplyal (1988-1991; 1993-1996), the noted epigraphist, numismatist, and archaeologist, who was awarded the prestigious Brahmi Award , for his contributions in the field of Indology, by the Kothari Foundation, New Delhi.

After Prof Thaplyal, the Department was headed by Prof S N Misra (who has contributed in the field of polity) (1991-1993; 1996-1999), Prof S M Mishra (whose area of interest is economic history) (1999-2001), Prof S N Kapur (whose contributions in the fields of Indo-Asian Cultural Relations and polity are well-appreciated) (2001-2008), and Prof D P Tewari (well-known for his work in the fields of archaeological excavation and exploration) (2008-2011).

Other former faculty members of the Department include Dr S D Singh (whose monumental work on ancient Indian warfare, under the guidance of Prof A L Basham, is internationally acclaimed, and who later went to Australia as Professor), Dr A B L Awasthi (an authority on puranic studies, who later joined Dr H S Gaur University, Sagar, as Tagore Professor), Prof R Avasthi (a renowned authority in the field of iconography), Prof A Lal (a well-known scholar in the field of Buddhist Studies, who served as Vice-chancellor of Dr R M L Avadh University, Faizabad), Prof G S Bhadouria (an art historian), and Prof Amar Singh (who has made significant contributions in the fields of art, architecture, and iconography).

The Department is one of the first departments of History in the country to offer a full-fledged course in archaeology, producing a number of renowned archaeologists, and giving two directors-general (Shri J P Joshi and Shri  M C Joshi), and a number of high-ranking officials (like Padmashri Dr R S Bisht, former Joint Director-General) to the Archaeological Survey of India.

In 2012, the Department has been recognized as a Centre of Excellence by the Government of Uttar Pradesh, and under the scheme, sanctioned a handsome grant to conduct excavations at Kampil (District Farrukhabad, UP), under the direction of Prof D P Tewari.

The Department occupied the east wing of the Arts Faculty building, and is spread over an area of approximately 18,960 sq ft. There are, in all, six lecture halls, and rooms and cabins for some faculty members. The Department has a modest library, consisting of books, mostly received gratis, and is useful for PG students. The Central (Tagore) Library of the University is quite rich, and accessible to all the students and faculty members. Internet facility is available for faculty members in the Department, while students may access the internet in the well-equipped Central Library Internet Facility.

Unique features of the syllabi:

  • For instance, Asoka is regarded one of the five greatest rulers the world has produced. Our Department offers a full paper on Asoka at PG level, and is one of the very few departments of history/ancient Indian history in the country to do so.
  • Great emphasis is laid on the study of history through original sources. Most of the departments of history/ancient Indian history in the country teach coins and inscriptions together as a single paper. But our Department offers separate papers on numismatics and epigraphy at PG level.
  • Besides teaching the history and culture of ancient India, the Department offers papers on Greater India, that is the spread of Indian culture in south and southeast Asia, and in central Asia, China, Tibet, and Afghanistan, at PG level.
  • There is also a paper on ancient world civilizations at UG level.
  • This is done with a view to enable our students, not only to realize the existence of geo-cultural diversity, but also to situate the history and culture of ancient India in their proper place in the history and culture of the ancient world.

Student strength in the Department

The Department is one of the largest departments of the University, from the point of view of the number of students enrolled in different programmes run by the Department. There are 320 seats at UG level, 180 seats at PG level, and 30 seats in the MPhil programme. The number of students enrolled for the PhD programme at present is 44, including 28 research fellows (25 UGC-JRF & 03 ICHR-JRF) of the University Grants Commission.

AN INTERDISCIPLINARY AND INTERDEPARTMENTAL PROGRAM AT COLUMBIA

The Ph.D. program in Classical Studies attracts students with a broad range of interests in all fields of ancient studies. Unique in its scope, the Classical Studies Program provides access to the intellectual and organizational resources of the four participating Departments: Art History and Archaeology , Classics , History , and Philosophy . Students are eligible to work with the materials of Columbia’s archaeological, epigraphic, and numismatic collections, can apply to Columbia’s excavation projects, and participate in the numerous initiatives organized by the University: seminars, lectures, conferences, museum trips, and more.

The beginnings of this integrated approach to antiquity go back at least as far as “Altertumswissenschaft” in 19th century Germany. For Wilamowitz-Moellendorff, classical scholarship was a “science.” It should “re-create the poet’s song, the thought of the philosopher and the lawgiver, the sanctity of the temple and the feelings of the believers and the unbelievers, the bustling life of market and port, the physical appearance of land and sea, mankind at work and play.” Today, the study of antiquity is a methodologically diverse field, looking to discover the past, but also to engage with art as art, and to do philosophy with the ancient philosophers. In the words of Momigliano, historians work with sources. But their work is not to interpret these sources. It is to interpret the reality that these sources refer to: “it is this ability to interpret a document by not making it a document, but a real episode of life in the past, that ultimately makes someone a historian.”

Variety and flexibility are among the defining features of the program. Each scholar graduating from Classical Studies has a different profile. Through one-on-one advising and a vibrant research community, we help students define their interests and move toward independent scholarship. As students enter the program, we encourage them to develop advanced language skills and to learn about aspects of antiquity that they may not yet have explored as undergraduates. As students proceed toward dissertation work, they are advised to find topics that reflect inter-disciplinary training and that allow them to make original contributions to the field. All Classical Studies Ph.D. students receive a full funding package which includes both the cost of tuition and a stipend.

For more information about the program and the application process, please get in touch with faculty , Chair Ellen Morris, or the administrators of Classical Studies , and consult the Classical Studies admissions page as well as the admissions page of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Columbia University .

Requirements

The requirements below should be read in conjunction with the general requirements of the Graduate School.

After admittance to the program, students should consult the Chair to set up an advisory committee to assist in planning a course of study for each term in residence. Typically, the Chair and the Vice-Chair of the program shall act as advisors, and an individual advisor shall be assigned depending on the specific interests of the students. Each student’s program of study must be approved before registration.

Requirements for the free-standing M.A. degree in Classical Studies and the M.A. degree taken en route to the Ph.D. are identical (see M.A. requirements). The M.A. dissertation must be approved before the student is permitted to continue on to the M.Phil. degree.

Phases of Study

The program of study for the Ph.D. tends to fall into three phases: (i) coursework and language training, (ii) developing advanced research skills and deeper knowledge of topics relevant to a dissertation project, to be demonstrated in qualifying exams, as well as a dissertation proposal, to be defended at a proposal defense examination, (iii) the dissertation phase during which the student completes a Ph.D. dissertation.

Students are encouraged to apply for additional external fellowships, and to consult GSAS guidelines about fellowship applications. Students should consult with their advisors about fellowships suitable to their phase of study and research profile.

M.Phil. Requirements

Students in the Ph.D. program are admitted to candidacy for the M.Phil. degree upon completion of all requirements for the M.A. degree.

Languages: Competence in a second ancient language, Greek or Latin, to be demonstrated by course work or examination, and in a second modern language (one of the two must be German, the other may be French or Italian), by examination.

Courses: Six additional courses for a letter grade beyond those completed for the M.A., to be taken in the Departments of Classics, History, Art History and Archaeology, or Philosophy. No more than three of these courses may be in any one department, and at least two of them must be colloquia or seminars. Students are expected to maintain at least a B+ average in their graded courses.

Qualifying Examination: Examinations in three topics are taken after the completion of all language and course requirements. Each student is examined on selected topics from the three fields of ancient study most relevant to the student’s research interests (to be determined with the help of the student’s advisor, and to be approved by the Advisor, Chair and Vice Chair). The examination includes both written and oral sections.

Dissertation Proposal Examination: In addition to completing successfully all requirements for the M.Phil. degree, students must pass a proposal defense and successfully complete and defend their doctoral dissertations in accordance with the regulations of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Continuation beyond the M.Phil. degree is authorized by the student’s dissertation proposal committee (sponsor and two further committee members), the Chair and the Vice-Chair.

Dissertation Phase

Ph.D. candidates must be enrolled full-time.

Dissertation: Topics are approved by the student’s Dissertation Committee, the Chair and Vice-Chair. Topics usually require a substantial amount of scholarly expertise in more than one of the three disciplines. The student must present and successfully defend the dissertation.

Teaching Requirement

Participation in the instructional activities of one or more of the participating departments for three years. As a rule, in the second, third and fourth years of study, students gain exposure to teaching as assistants to professors in undergraduate courses, as section leaders in lecture courses or as language instructors. Students who are interested in broadening their teaching apprenticeships are eligible to teach in the Core Program once they have received the M.Phil. Students may only apply to be a preceptor if they have or expect to have the M.Phil. by the May prior to being appointed as a preceptor, which includes having successfully defended a dissertation proposal, if they have completed at least two substantive chapters of the dissertation, and if they are not past their sixth year of registration during the first year of the preceptorship. Students may not hold instructional appointments after year seven.

Ancient History, PhD

The Graduate Group in Ancient History is an interdisciplinary, cross-departmental program that encompasses the study of the ancient history of the Near East and the Mediterranean Basin, from the origins of civilization in the fertile river basins of the Tigris and the Euphrates to the rise of Islam and the emergence of the so-called barbarian successor kingdoms.

The expertise and interests of members of the group are diverse and heterogeneous. What unites us is the enterprise of building historical narratives from the fragmentary and diffuse textual and material evidence available to us. Students admitted to the Graduate Group in Ancient History will receive training in the political, intellectual, cultural, socio-economic, and religious history of at least two discrete ancient societies as part of their preparation for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

In addition to course work, candidates are expect to participate in  seminars, act as Teaching Assistants and/or teach their own classes. In order to progress to dissertation stage, students must, in addition to passing their 20 courses, fulfil the following examination requirements; Modern Languages Examination, Qualifying Examination & the Preliminary Examination. Following completion of three years of coursework and all examinations, a student will be advanced to dissertation stage.

Admission to the Ph.D Program in Ancient History

The University of Virginia offers a Ph.D. in History with a specialization in Ancient (Greek and Roman) History.

The particular emphasis of this program is on studying the history of classical antiquity as history, attentive to the methods and interests of the wider historical profession. What happened? Why? How did people live? What motivated them? How did ancient institutions work? Ancient authors and their language are closely studied, but as sources to answer such questions, not as the ends of analysis in themselves. Those whose primary interest is in understanding the method of ancient historical authors (historiography rather than history stricto sensu ) should apply to the Department of Classics rather than to History. Similarly, those whose primary interest is in working with archaeological, rather than written, evidence should apply to the Program in Mediterranean Art & Archaeology in the  Department of Art .

Although candidates will be expected to show a high degree of accomplishment in the classical languages, and the program cooperates closely with the departments of Classics and Art, the program prepares them in particular for employment in departments of History.

The program of courses in the graduate program in European history is strenuous, and History students have little time to take classes to improve their knowledge of the ancient languages (rarely more than one per semester). At the same time, the Classics Department MA-level translation examinations, which Ph.D students in Ancient History must take, are very rigorous. As a result, to be admissible to the History Department to specialize in Ancient History an applicant will usually need to show a minimum of three years of university-level Latin or Greek and two years of the other ancient language. More preparation is even better.

Candidates for admission to the department wishing to specialize in Ancient History are asked to provide (in addition to the other documents required for admission) an analysis of their Greek and Latin preparation on a separate sheet, listing the university-level classes they have taken, their instructors, which authors and which works they read in those classes, and how much of them. It is useful also to offer one or more letters of recommendation speaking to their accomplishment in the ancient languages (candidates are not limited to three letters of recommendation).  If difficulties present themselves in including such additional material in the on-line applications submitted to the UVA graduate school, it can be sent directly to Professor Elizabeth Meyer ( [email protected] ) or to Professor J. E. Lendon ( [email protected] ).

Like all departments, the Corcoran Department of History at the University of Virginia is limited in the size of its graduate program, and is thus in a position to admit only a small fraction of the students who wish to pursue graduate study.  Moreover, applicants wishing to study Ancient History must compete for admission (and the accompanying funding) with applicants in US history, in which UVA is one of the most selective programs in the United States.  As it works in practice, to be competitive for admission, an applicant usually needs to display a nearly perfect undergraduate and/or MA GPA (no more than a scattering of “B”s, and ideally none) and a verbal reasoning GRE score in the top 10% percent, which we strongly recommend that our applicants take.

As in other fields of history, the department welcomes candidates for admission in Ancient History who have earned MA degrees in Ancient History or Classics at other universities or who have attended post-baccalaureate programs in Greek and Latin.  Although those students are likely to have advantages in preparation over students coming directly from their BAs, the requirements for such students in the program are the same, that is, the department  grants no advanced standing for courses or degrees taken elsewhere.

Requirements of the Ph.D. program

Ancient History makes particular demands upon students at the graduate level, especially in the need to master multiple research languages (ancient and modern) and to acquire technically demanding ancillary skills (which might include archaeology, epigraphy, numismatics, and papyrology) in addition to their core training as historians. The professional practice of these fields of History demands interdisciplinary competencies, and so the graduate training we offer is commensurately interdisciplinary.

From the Graduate Guide to Study in History, Programs and Fields of Study:  Ancient History

“Ph.D. students in the interdisciplinary field of Ancient History are expected to take courses in the History Department but also courses in other departments (such as Classics, Art, and Religious Studies) while preparing to be examined in two major fields of study, Greek and Roman history, and to pass four language exams.  The third Ph.D. examination field is chosen in consultation with the advisor, but can involve, e.g., the historical study of a post-classical epoch or work in another discipline such as historiography or archaeology.  Ph.D. students in Ancient History are expected to pass mastery-level exams in French and German and the MA-level exams in Greek and Latin set for their own students by the Classics Department; at least one of these four exams must have been passed by the time the student sits the Ph.D. qualifying exam in the History Department, although it is naturally best to pass as many of them as soon as possible. Extensive language training is therefore necessary for successful application to the program.  Ph.D. students in Ancient History typically take courses through the fall semester of the third year and their qualifying exams following in January of the spring semester of the same academic year.  Ancient historians are also encouraged to participate in the Classics Department's Tuesday Lunch series, where they are welcome to present their work, and to attend the lectures in the Classics Department and those sponsored by the Archaeological Institute of America.”

To which should be added , that ancient history students are encouraged to take a year--after the third year--away from Charlottesville, at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, or the American Academy in Rome, or acquiring an ancillary skill--epigraphy, papyrology, numismatics--at a European university, institute, or library that makes a specialty of it.  Similarly, students of ancient history are encouraged to participate in archaeological fieldwork over summers, unless they spend their summers working intensively upon languages, as often proves necessary.

Students in Ancient History must pass four language exams:  Mastery-level exams in French and German, administered by those departments, and the "preliminary" exams in Latin and Greek in the Classics Department.  The latter are offered twice a year, are based in part on a reading list and in part on sight-reading, and do not allow the use of a dictionary:

  • Greek Reading List
  • Latin Reading List

Here they are called "MA" exams.

🧐 How to Choose a History Dissertation Topic?

Before examining our ideas for dissertation topics in history, you should get ready for this. You have to understand how to pick a history dissertation topic, which will ensure your academic success. Keep in mind that this is a vital step in your career.

So, check some tips on picking what to write about:

  • Make sure that the topic fits in your field of study. You have to understand what you’re writing about. Basing your paper on existing knowledge and experience is a part of any dissertation. Working on an overly complicated idea can sound impressive but lead to failure. It will become a nightmare already on the stage of writing a dissertation proposal. How can you write the entire thing without comprehending it?
  • Estimate whether you’re interested in the topic you intend to write on. Although this might seem obvious, yes. However, being actually invested makes a massive difference for your further work. There are plenty of students who settle for “easy but boring” topics and end up struggling twice as much.
  • Ensure that your topic is specific enough. Your idea should have the potential for fruitful research. Narrowing down your area of study is essential for writing a good dissertation. It helps you to find the direction of your examination and enough sources to work with. Moreover, this way, you’ll be able to explore your topic in its entirety.
  • Do some prior research. It will give you an understanding of how much literature on your topic is out there. Take notes of the materials for the reference list and your analysis. Checking history essay samples is a good idea, too.
  • Don’t be shy to ask your dissertation advisor for some assistance. After all, they are here to help and guide you through the process. Besides, you have to see what ideas they consider relevant and appropriate.

📋 How to Structure Your Dissertation?

An adequately structured history dissertation can immensely help students. It ensures that they present their ideas and thoughts logically. Sticking to a particular dissertation structure is an essential element of such work.

Proper organization of a history dissertation can improve the working process.

The general plan of any dissertation type is the following:

  • Title Page. A title page should only contain essential information about your work. It usually shows your name, type of the document (thesis, research paper, dissertation), and the title itself. A good history dissertation title is crucial! It’s the first thing a reader will see.
  • Acknowledgments. Do you wish to give credit to someone for supporting you during the tiresome months of your work? This is the right part to do so, be it your family, friends, or professors. It is an excellent form to express gratitude to those who proofread your drafts. Or those who brought you another cup of coffee when you needed it.
  • Declaration. This section is your written confirmation. You declare that all the research and writing is entirely original and was conducted by you. If someone intellectually contributed to your project, state it in the acknowledgments.
  • Table of Contents. Essentially, it’s a brief structure of your dissertation. List every section that you’ve included in your academic paper here.
  • Abstract. This is the section where you write a brief summary of your dissertation. It should describe the issue, summarize your core message and essential points. List your research methods and what you’ve done. Remember to make it short, as the abstract shouldn’t exceed 300 words or so. Finish the part with a few essential keywords so that others can find your work.
  • Introduction. A dissertation introduction presents the subject to the reader. You can talk about the format of your work. Explain what you plan to contribute to the field with your research.
  • Literature Review. The chapter reviews and analyzes pieces of scholarly work (literature) that have been made on the subject of your research. The sources should present relevant theories and support your thesis. Be sure to discuss the weaknesses and strengths of the selected area of study and highlight possible gaps in this research.
  • a code of conduct;
  • research limitations;
  • research philosophy;
  • research design;
  • ethical consideration;
  • data collection methods;
  • data analysis strategy.
  • Findings and Results. Restate everything you have found in your research. However, do not interpret the data or make any conclusions yet.
  • Discussion and Conclusion. In this chapter, you should personally interpret all of the data and make conclusions based on your research. It is essential to establish a logical link between the results and evidence. Finally, conclude the overall study. You can add final judgments, opinions, and comments.
  • References. This section contains a list of references to all the sources that you used. Write down every material, which you quoted, mentioned, or paraphrased in your work. Check your educational institution’s guidelines to see how to do so correctly.
  • Bibliography. Similar to the reference section, a bibliography is a list of sources you used in your dissertation. The only difference is that it should contain even the sources you don’t directly mention in your writing. Whatever helped you with the research, you state here.
  • Appendices. The section may include any supplementary information that explains and complement the arguments. Add pictures, diagrams, and graphs that serve as examples for your research subject.

An appendix of the history dissertation should be available to provide the reader with evidence.

Writing a dissertation is the right challenge for those with ambitions and lots of determination. It is a lot like a marathon, and it starts with choosing the right topic. We hope that you will find one for yourself on this list. Good luck! Share the article to help those who may need a piece of advice or some history dissertation topics.
