Kindness & Mercy: Gowola Homework Club, Shepparton, Victoria

gowala homework club

There is furious writing, the of sounds paper ripping and the occasional chair shuffle on a Tuesday afternoon at the Gowola Homework Club. But it wasn’t long ago that the question ‘how to increase the number of aboriginal children completing secondary school?’ was challenging two Koorie Educators, Julie Ferguson and Janelle Atkinson, in the Sandhurst Diocese of Victoria.

From building interest and numbers, the club now has regulars that put homework and learning above the enticing summer afternoons that could be spent outside. Doing homework and in the process having fun along with the encouragement and assistance of the committed volunteers are the key ingredients to the success that this Homework Club has experienced in its 2-year existence.

Julie and Janelle have been instrumental in the set up and continued success of this initiative, which has now become an integral part of the Mercy Access Program in Shepparton. They are both proud Yorta Yorta women and their experience as Koorie Educators in Catholic Schools has motivated them to build on their shared passion for education.

The word ‘Gowola’ means kindness or mercy in the Yorta Yorta language and it perfectly describes the underpinning values of this club and how it’s run. The distinct family orientated atmosphere is highlighted by the fact that both Julie and Janelle’s children attend this homework club and help to foster a welcoming environment for both regulars and newcomers.

This initiative would not be possible without committed Mercy Access volunteers and the dedication and direction from Julie and Janelle. Their incredible partnership and shared heritage has allowed them to give the gift of education to more Aboriginal children of Shepparton. Developing the next generation through the power of learning is an amazing achievement. All of these children now have the tools and opportunities to finish their education.

With collaboration from Mercy Works .

HWClub @ WESS

Welcome to the West End HomeWork Club (HWC)!

Keeping up with schoolwork can be challenging, and we're here to help. Our club is designed to create a safe and supportive space where students and their families can engage with the Australian Curriculum.

At HWC, our mission is to provide a supportive environment for students to complete their assigned homework with the assistance of educators and peers. Our weekly meetings ensure that students stay on track with their coursework and receive one-to-one or small-group support from experienced educators.

Our club is also an excellent opportunity for students to share knowledge with their peers, build relationships, and develop good work habits and a positive attitude towards learning. By participating in our program, students can develop the skills necessary to become independent learners and thrive in their academic careers.

So, whether you're struggling with a particular subject or simply looking for a supportive community to help you stay on top of your studies, HWC is here to help. So join us today and start your journey towards academic success!

HWC offers our students the option of HWClub or Learning Hub 247 to support and engage with their learning.

J Fok, Grade 2 and Grade 5 Parent

My children recently had the pleasure of joining the homework club and using the LH247 online tutorial service, and I can confidently say that it exceeded all my expectations. From start to finish, every aspect of the experience was top-notch.

The teacher is exceptionally knowledgeable, patient, and skilled at explaining complex concepts in a clear and understandable manner. She tailors her teaching style to match each individual's learning pace and needs, making the learning process not only effective but also enjoyable.

The platform's user interface is user-friendly and intuitive, allowing for easy navigation and access to the most important subjects such as Math and English. Scheduling sessions was a breeze, and I appreciate the flexibility in choosing the best suited my requirements.

Furthermore, the online program provides a wealth of supplementary resources and materials that complement the lessons perfectly. This thoughtful inclusion enhances the overall learning experience and helps reinforce the concepts taught during the sessions.

In conclusion, sending my kids to the homework club and joining the LH247 online tutorial have been a game-changer for me. The quality of teaching and the user-friendly platform make it an unparalleled learning resource. I cannot recommend this service highly enough and will undoubtedly continue using it for all my future learning needs.

Homework Club

Program overview.

Students and volunteer mentors put their heads together over homework assignments and literacy enrichment activities. This daily, one-on-one academic support improves student’s educational outcomes while simultaneously fostering the meaningful, personal relationships with caring adults that are vital to our children’s academic growth and personal well-being.

Our Next Generation’s inaugural program, Homework Club, was founded when a group of enterprising volunteers recognized a need for additional youth support in their community in the early ‘90s. They began to meet weekly to give students a safe and focused environment to complete their homework assignments and receive academic support. Soon after, they incorporated as a 501(c)3 nonprofit and Our Next Generation was born.

gowala homework club

Over the years, volunteers have continued to provide this vital service to the students of our community – not only offering academic support, but also developing stable and meaningful relationships with student that help create the safe and welcoming environment that the youth of our community so desperately need. Although Our Next Generation has evolved over the years to include additional academic and enrichment programs  as the need and capacity arose, Homework Club remains a vital and effective service for our students.

We think NIAC is a great place to be. But don’t just take our word for it, check out what some of our members have to say.

gowala homework club

Everyday I have the opportunity to step into NIAC, I find myself thankful for Amy Paul and her vision. The quintessential gym to free the mind of trouble, fill the soul, and build a muscle or two, NIAC is my medicine away from the mountains. The friendly staff, the multitude of classes and the access to professional advice offers something for everyone. As a healthcare provider, this year more than any, I have been overly impressed with the amount of care the team spends on cleanliness; the place sparkles. At half a century old, my health, like so many gym goers, is dear to me in order to do the the things I love: skiing, backpacking, climbing, rafting, and whatever other crazy adventure my grown children take me on. At 102 years of age, a man named George Jedenoff still skis, and my friends and I just missed meeting him last year at Snowbird, Utah. He’ll turn 103 this next July. George started his daily training regiment at 70 years of age (you can check George out on YouTube); it’s never too late to start. A special thanks to Amy for keeping the dream alive for all of us. Me? Well, according to Mr. Jedenoff’s philosophy: I’ve got another 50+ years to ski (my favorite pastime) – nothing left to do but get on with the workout . . . 🙂
