How To Write an Effective Cover Letter for a Copywriter (With Examples)

flat art illustration of a Copywriter

Introduction:

As a copywriter applying for remote jobs, your cover letter can make or break your chances of success. Your cover letter is your opportunity to grab the employer’s attention, showcase your skills and experience, and convince them that you are the right fit for the job. In this blog post, we will discuss how to write an effective cover letter for a copywriter, focusing on what to include and how to format it.

  • Research the company:

Before you start writing your cover letter, research the company and the job you are applying for. Look for information such as the company’s mission statement, their core values, and the type of client they serve. This information will help you tailor your cover letter, ensuring that it aligns with the company’s goals and values.

  • Start with a strong opening:

Your opening paragraph should grab the employer’s attention and make them want to read on. Start with a strong and engaging sentence that highlights your passion for copywriting and the job you are applying for.

  • Showcase your skills:

The next paragraph should focus on your skills and experience. Highlight specific examples of past work or achievements that demonstrate your copywriting skills. Make sure to mention any specialized skills, such as SEO expertise or experience with a particular industry.

  • Explain why you’re the right fit:

Your cover letter should explain why you are the best fit for the job. This means highlighting how your skills and experience align with the company’s goals and values. You should also indicate why you want to work for the company specifically, rather than just any remote job.

  • End with a call to action:

Your final paragraph should end with a call to action, inviting the employer to contact you for an interview or more information. Make sure to thank the employer for considering your application and express your enthusiasm for the opportunity.

Conclusion:

Writing an effective cover letter for a copywriter takes time and effort but can make all the difference. By researching the company, starting with a strong opening, showcasing your skills, explaining why you’re the right fit, and ending with a call to action, you can create a compelling cover letter that stands out from the competition. In our next blog post, we will discuss how to format your cover letter for maximum impact.

My experience spans content creation, hashtag research, and more, elements I’m confident will help invigorate Amazon’s expansive sphere.

Dear Mr. Brown:

Being a digital enthusiast with wanderlust in my veins, I’ve discovered an intersection between my passion for creative content strategies and my love for traveling. Flying with Southwest Airlines has helped me understand how strategic content impacts customer experience, and it’s this understanding that propels my desire to contribute as a content strategist at your prominent airline.

By focusing on an improved digital customer journey, we increased organic traffic by 23%. Implementing content personalization, we saw an average of 14% boost in sales within 16 months.

Formerly, at Securus Technologies, I developed a keen understanding of information architecture. Joining Southwest Airlines’ team would enable me to bring these skills to the forefront, enhancing customer experiences and their interaction with your brand. I’m eager for the opportunity to contribute in a meaningful way.

How to Format a Copywriter Cover Letter

Salesperson pops out of computer screen to depict outselling the competition with sales cover letter

Writing a cover letter for a copywriter position might seem daunting at first, but it’s actually not too far off from the things you do for a living. It all comes down to identifying the target audience, learning everything about them, and ensuring your cover letter hits all the beats and ticks all the boxes.

Therefore, it’s important to read the job description carefully and certify you’re updating your cover letter to match. Copywriting roles can vary based on the company, ranging from an editor to a blog writer, so make sure your cover letter reflects your enthusiasm for the role and the fact that you know what it’s all about.

Copywriter cover letter introduction

Just as good ad copy starts with a strong hook, your cover letter needs to do the same. Recruiters won’t cut you any slack here!

For starters, dig into the research and try to find out the name of the person you’re sending your cover letter to so that you can personalize your greeting. If your research is fruitless, settle for a “Dear Hiring Manager” or “Dear [Company] Team.”

With the greeting out of the way, spend some time crafting the perfect opening paragraph. It should explain why you’re the right copywriter for this job, so don’t be shy and mention a key skill of yours that the company seeks, such as SEO optimization. Make a personal connection with the company to seal the deal.

The below opener just doesn’t work. It’s dull, and as a copywriter, showcasing creativity in every paragraph is paramount.

Boring…

I saw your job listing online and I wanted to apply for this copywriting job.

This is so much better! The candidate instantly gets into why they’re a good fit for the role, and they even use numbers to make their claims pop.

Compelling!

Copywriter cover letter body

You know better than anyone that working as a copywriter doesn’t just mean being able to write good copy. Your success is always measured by important metrics, from conversions to open rates, so utilize that for your cover letter.

In the body paragraphs, focus on highlighting the wins you’re most proud of and those that align well with the job description .

You could, for instance, talk about how your content strategy increased web traffic by 40% within 6 months, and how you used tools like SEMRush and Google Analytics to achieve that.

Let’s flip it around and imagine the job you’re applying for strongly focuses on social media. In such instances, mention how you collaborated with the design team using Adobe Creative Suite to craft exciting Instagram posts, increasing social media shares by 39%.

That’s so impressive!

Copywriter cover letter closing

High-quality copy stays consistent and engaging throughout, and so should your cover letter. The closing paragraph and signoff can help you create a memorable farewell with recruiters picking up the phone to call you right away.

Use this paragraph to emphasize that you’re a good fit. This means researching the company culture and mission and mentioning it to score some brownie points. For instance, if you’re applying to work at a marketing startup, mention how you’re no stranger to that fast-paced and goal-oriented mindset.

Don’t forget to mention your excitement about discussing your copywriting skills further. You can also include a key skill, such as your expertise in brand research, to emphasize what you’ll bring to the role.

This closer is much too generic to impress a recruiter seeking copywriters. It doesn’t show that the candidate did any research.

That didn’t work…

I want an office job and I can start right away so please let me know if you want to hire me.

Now, this is much more impressive. The candidate highlights their experience and what they’re able to bring to the job.

As a copywriter, you’re no stranger to in-depth research, so put those skills to good use when you write your opener. Check the company website, LinkedIn, and job description , or perhaps even reach out to someone you know who works there before sending your application.

Anything that showcases your ability to craft copy that engages and converts is worth mentioning. Include metrics like increases in organic search rankings or website traffic, social media following, or ROI on marketing campaigns.

There’s a lot of overlap between copywriting and other jobs, such as marketer, content writer, SEO specialist, or brand manager. Try to lean into transferable skills and include examples of your copy to show you’re ready for the job.

News Editor Cover Letter Example

1. How to craft an effective copywriter cover letter header & headline

The first step to writing your cover letter as a copywriter is to craft an effective header and headline.

For your cover letter header , you will need to create a block of text placed in the upper lefthand corner of the document. In this header will be all the necessary details about the company you are applying for and your professional information.

As for your cover letter headline , this is a short title used to grab the reader’s attention and preview the information that is to come. A strong headline can make the difference between whether or not an employer’s reads through your whole cover letter.

To help illustrate how to create these elements, check out the following examples:

Formatting the header

In your copywriter cover letter header, you can vary the format according to your stylistic preferences. However, there should always be between 3 to 4 lines of text that contain the following information:

  • The name of the company (& company department, when applicable) that you are applying to
  • Your name and professional title
  • Your professional contact information (phone number, email address, etc.)

When you put this all together, it should look similar to the following example

To: Star Media Solutions, Communications Department From: John Smith , Copywriter (123) 456-7890 | [email protected] | linkedin.com/in/john-smith

Writing the Headline

As a professional writer, you know how important an eye-catching headline can be.

When writing your headline for your Copywriter cover letter, you should always use a keyword related to the position, an eye-catching number or trigger word, a powerful adjective or verb, and a promise.

Here is an example of a well-written headline for a copywriter cover letter

My 3-Step Approach to Copywriting and How it Can Improve Your Company’s Website

Trigger Word/Number : 3-Step Approach Keyword: Copywriting Adjective: Improve Promise: Your Company’s Website – the inclusion of this detail tells the employer that you will be relating your skills specifically to the company and its needs.

2. How to create a personalized greeting on your copywriter cover letter

Following your headline will be your cover letter greeting. This is a very brief introductory statement that lets the reader know to who the cover letter is specifically addressed.

Rather than using a vague greeting – such as “To Whom It May Concern” – we recommend researching the company beforehand to uncover the exact person who will review your application. By doing so, you show the employer that you have great attention to detail, as well as indicating your strong work ethic.

If you are unable to determine exactly which person at the company is responsible for hiring, try out one of the following alternatives:

3. How to write a compelling copywriter cover letter introduction

With your header, headline, and greeting in place, it’s time to write the introduction paragraph of your copywriter cover letter.

By the time the reader reaches this introduction, they should already be intrigued and impressed by the headline and greeting. To keep their attention, your introduction should contain the following information:

  • A brief overview of your professional history and goals
  • A statement on why you are enthusiastic about applying to this company
  • A mutual acquaintance (when possible)

Here is an example to help demonstrate how to write a copywriter cover letter introduction

To the [Company Name] Hiring Manager,

I am a Copywriter with 3+ years of specialized experience in website writing and Search Engine Optimization. Previously, I was contracted by your Head of Communications, Jane Doe, as a freelance writer to create landing page copy for your website. After giving the content I created an excellent review, Ms. Doe recommended I apply for a full-time position with your company.

In this introduction, the applicant not only successfully names a mutual acquaintance but also shows they have experience working as a freelancer for this company.

4. How to show your professional value as a copywriter in your cover letter

After your cover letter introduction is complete, the next major element of the document are the body paragraphs. In general, you should aim to include 2 to 4 body paragraphs that answer each of the following questions:

  • What excites you about working at this company?
  • What do you hope to learn from working at this company?
  • What accomplishments or qualifications make you stand out as an applicant?
  • What key skills do you possess that are relevant to the position?

Accomplishments are highly important on any cover letter, as they help to show employers what real-life and quantifiable value you can bring to their company.

Here is an example of how to describe an accomplishment in a copywriter cover letter

As a freelance Copywriter for [Previous Client], I created landing page copy that boosted their conversion rates by 45%. Additionally, I wrote a wide array of newsletter CTAs used in both their web copy and blog content that led to a 65% increase in subscriptions.

5. How to end your copywriter cover letter with a strong closing statement

The final component of your copywriter cover letter is the closing statement. As you have with the rest of your cover letter, you should take the time to ensure this element is well-written and compelling – after all, this will be the information that is most fresh in an employer’s mind as they consider you as an applicant.

In your closing statement, you should include:

  • An enthusiastic sentence saying you are looking forward to hearing from them
  • An additional sentence stating you will follow up, including how you will contact them or how they can contact you
  • A formal sign-off

Here is an example of a strong closing statement from a copywriter cover letter

After reviewing your company’s writing standards, I am confident that I am the ideal candidate for this position. I look forward to speaking with you further about how my copywriting content can improve your website and sales, and hope to connect within the next two weeks. I am available every weekday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the best way to reach me is (123) 456-7890.

Best Wishes,

[Applicant Name]

Cover letter header

When recruiters hire copywriters, they expect prose that sings. There’s no better way to prove your skills than creating a copywriter cover letter that displays your best. There’s a method to cover letter writing, just as there’s a method to excellent copywriting.

In this cover letter guide, along with the corresponding copywriter cover letter example, we’ll cover the following topics to help you write the best cover letter possible:

  • How to choose the best cover letter format and what paragraphs the cover letter should include
  • How to get the most out of each cover letter paragraph (header, greeting, intro, body and conclusion)
  • What approach to take when writing your cover letter
  • What mistakes to avoid when writing your copywriter cover letter.

You know the tricks of the writing trade, but a cover letter is a unique case. You need to tread the line between bragging and underplaying your skills while explaining why you are the right copywriter for the job. Let us help you elevate your application with the tips and tricks in this guide. (You can also check out our library of cover letter examples for inspiration

Best format for a copywriter cover letter

Copywriter cover letters follow the same basic structure as other letters. Your application letter should contain the following elements:

  • The cover letter header
  • The greeting / salutation
  • The cover letter intro
  • The middle paragraphs (body of the letter)
  • The ending paragraph of your cover letter (conclusion and call-to-action)

While you definitely want to show off your writing skills, you also want to stick closely to what recruiters want: An overview of your talents, how you approach your job and what it’s like to work with you to create excellent advertising campaigns.

For general advice on writing cover letters, peruse our comprehensive cover letter guide. This guide is targeted specifically for copywriters.

This copywriter cover letter example is a good foundation to develop your own professional application:

The eye is naturally attracted to graphic elements. Thus, your cover letter header, which sits at the top of your document, will likely create a recruiter’s first impression of you. It also performs the important task of presenting your contact information. Don’t rely on your resume. If your copywriter cover letter wows the HR person, don’t take the chance that they will reopen your resume to contact you. Make that initial contact as easy as possible! Check out the header of our copywriter cover letter sample for more ideas on creating your own.

Your resume design and cover letter design should be consistent. The two documents are part of the package that forms your application.

Here’s where your research comes into play. What is the culture of the company you’re applying to? Make sure the greeting of your letter reflects that culture and uses the name of a person whenever possible.

Most of our cover letter samples begin with “Dear Mr./Ms./Dr. [surname here]. If you are not sure of a person’s honorifics, simply use their first and last names. You may go more casual if you know for certain that the company is also casual. “Hi Ad Department” or “Greetings Y’all” may be appropriate. Use your judgment and if you’re unsure, stick with “Dear.”

The aim of letter greeting / salutation: Open your cover letter with a greeting that fits the situation and addresses an individual when possible.

Dear Ms. Orton,

As a copywriter, you have to hit the ground running with great copy. You’ve addressed the hiring manager, now you need to introduce yourself and your career, but most importantly, you need to answer their biggest question: “Why should I hire you?” Do that by addressing their most pressing needs with one or two sentences that show that you know how to fill those needs. Below you’ll find the introduction from our copywriter cover letter example.

The aim of the cover letter intro: Grab the attention of the HR person so they want to keep reading.

As a leading retail copywriter, I understand that the right words can make the products fly off the shelves. As the daughter of a shopkeeper, explaining features and benefits is in my DNA. Two degrees in English and over ten years of copywriting experience give me the confidence to hone the messages.

The middle paragraphs of cover letters get to the heart of your career. You have some breathing room so you can develop some impressive turns of phrases, but make sure you are staying focused on your ultimate goal: aim each achievement and attribute your list squarely at your prospective employer’s needs.

The words you choose as well as the successes you highlight are telling, so think carefully and adjust for each new job application. (This will help you get past the Applicant Tracking System as well.) Break up your paragraphs with a bullet-pointed list of examples of branding brilliance that will also attract the eye of your reader. The aim of the body of your cover letter: Craft excellent prose as you detail the success you can transfer to your new position.

I have created copy for online product listings, in-store point of sale materials, monthly customer magazines and all kinds of print and online advertising. Whether it is a long-form article on how to cook for the perfect picnic or crafting a slogan for the latest seasonal range, I take pride in crafting communication to reach our customers. I am used to working with the wider marketing team to ensure that my copy fits with the marketing visuals and over the six years I have become a valued sounding board for many of the marketing concepts that have been introduced. Our team were regular winners at multiple annual marketing awards and many of my ad campaigns have been critically acclaimed (one led to an unprecedented sales uplift of 1400%).

You’ve made your point, now you need to sum up. Remind your prospective employer what makes you a standout candidate. Then, if you have room, offer a personal touch. Maybe you wrote copy for a product you truly love. Maybe you are proud of your mentoring efforts with a new coworker. A tidbit you can expand on in your interview is a great hook.

Finally, be forward about expressing your interest in an interview. All our cover letter samples include a call-to-action or direct interview request. See how this is done in the excerpt from our copywriter cover letter sample below.

The aim of this part: Reiterate why you’re a great fit for the job and respectfully ask for an interview.

I enclose a wide-ranging portfolio of my most successful retail copywriting (along with its impact on sales). I am naturally a regular customer at Heart and Home and have a few ideas that I would love to discuss during a potential interview. Sincerely, George Jones

  • Highlighting relevant campaign success metrics and previous experience in a similar role (e.g., "120% boost in audience engagement" at a previous agency) demonstrates quantifiable achievements and expertise in the field.
  • Drawing connections between one's personal professional journey and the company's approach (e.g., merging creativity with data-driven results) shows alignment with the company's values and working style.
  • Expressing interest in leveraging specific skills for the role (e.g., copywriting prowess and digital marketing insights) directly relates the applicant's skill set to the requirements of the position being applied for.
  • Requesting a meeting to discuss potential contributions to the team shows proactiveness and a readiness to engage further, indicating genuine interest in the company and the role.

Designing your copywriter cover letter: what is the best format

Let's start with the basics, your copywriter cover letter should include your:

  • Introduction
  • Body paragraph
  • Closing statement
  • Signature (that's not a must)

Next, we'll move to the spacing of your copywriter cover letter, and yes, it should be single-spaced ( automatically formatted for you in our cover letter templates ).

Don't go for a old-school font (e.g. Arial or Times New Roman), but instead, pick an ATS-favorite like Chivo, Volkhov, or Raleway, to stand out.

Our cover letter builder is also set up for you with the standard one-inch margin, all around the text.

Finally, ensure your copywriter resume and cover letter are in the same font and are submitted in PDF (to keep the formatting in place).

P.S. The Applicant Tracker System (or ATS) won't be assessing your [job] cover letter, it's solely for the recruiters' eyes.

The top sections on a copywriter cover letter

Header with Contact Information: Include your name, address, phone number, and email, providing the recruiter with immediate access to your contact details which is standard practice for any professional correspondence.

Personalized Greeting: Use the name of the hiring manager or recruiter if possible, as personalization can help establish a connection from the very beginning and shows attention to detail, a key skill for a copywriter.

Compelling Introduction: Start with a strong opening that hooks the reader’s attention, showcasing your creativity and writing skills, which are essential for a copywriter role.

Relevant Experience and Skills: Highlight your copywriting experience, knowledge of the industry, and specific writing skills, matching them to the job description to demonstrate that your qualifications align with the job requirements.

Call to Action and Formal Closing: End with an assertive call to action that invites further discussion, along with a polite and professional closing, maintaining the reader's interest and leaving a lasting impression of your enthusiasm for the role.

Key qualities recruiters search for in a candidate’s cover letter

  • Creativity and Originality: To craft compelling and fresh content that stands out in a crowded market.
  • Strong Writing and Editing Skills: To produce clear, grammatically correct, and engaging copy that resonates with the target audience.
  • Understanding of Marketing and SEO: To align copy with brand strategy and optimize content for search engines, increasing visibility and engagement.
  • Versatility in Writing Styles: To adapt tone and approach for various platforms and purposes, from social media to long-form articles.
  • Ability to Work Under Pressure and Meet Deadlines: To handle multiple projects efficiently and deliver high-quality work within tight timeframes.
  • Excellent Research Skills: To produce accurate and factually correct content that adds value to the reader and establishes the brand's credibility.

What matters most when tailoring your copywriter cover letter salutation

Your copywriter cover letter greeting should feel welcoming to recruiters.

Use their first name (e.g. "Dear Marshall" or "Dear Sara"), if you've previously been in touch with the hiring manager and are on a more friendly basis.

If this is the first time you're contacting the recruiters, start your copywriter cover letter with:

  • their last name (e.g. "Dear Ms. Ali" or "Dear Mr. Stevens") - look up who's the hiring manager for the role on social media or the company website;
  • generalized greeting (e.g. "Dear HR Team") - just don't use "To whom it may concern" or "Dear Sir/Madam".

List of salutations you can use

  • Dear Hiring Manager,
  • Dear [Company Name] Recruiting Team,
  • Dear [Department] Team,
  • Dear Mr./Ms. [Last Name],
  • Dear Dr. [Last Name],
  • Dear [Job Title] Hiring Committee,

What to include in those first two sentences, or your copywriter cover letter introduction

Have you ever wondered what the best way is to present your profile in the copywriter cover letter introduction ?

There's no right or wrong answer if you're being concise and authentic to yourself.

Some professionals start their copywriter cover letter by:

  • congratulating the company - focusing on something impressive, whether that's an award, an industry-leading project, or a key event;
  • aligning their passion for the field or industry with the job - if you're enthusiastic about what you do, you'd thus grow your skill set and value as a professional.

How to write an achievement-focused copywriter cover letter body

We've got the intro and greeting covered. Now, comes the most definitive part of your copywriter cover letter - the body .

In the next three to six paragraphs, you'd have to answer why should recruiters hire you.

What better way to do this than by storytelling?

And, no, you don't need a "Once upon a time" or "I started from the bottom and made it to the top" career-climbing format to tell a compelling narrative.

Instead, select up to three most relevant skills for the job and look back on your resume.

Find an achievement, that you're proud of, which has taught you these three job-crucial skills.

Quantify your accomplishment, using metrics, and be succinct in the way you describe it.

The ultimate aim would be to show recruiters how this particular success has built up your experience to become an invaluable candidate.

Time to wrap up your copywriter cover letter

Writing the closing paragraph of your copywriter cover letter is just as important as the salutation.

You have to make it personalized to the job advert and recruiter.

Experienced professionals advise candidates to end with a request or reminder for follow-up. Write that you're grateful for the opportunity, and, at the same time, hint that you're available for the next steps of the process.

Otherwise, you could also conclude your copywriter cover letter by facing the future. How do you see yourself, as part of the team? In particular, how would you settle in your new role in the first six months to a year?

No experience copywriter cover letter: making the most out of your profile

Candidates who happen to have no professional experience use their copywriter cover letter to stand out.

Instead of focusing on a professional achievement, aim to quantify all the relevant, transferrable skills from your life experience.

Once again, the best practice to do so would be to select an accomplishment - from your whole career history.

Another option would be to plan out your career goals and objectives: how do you see yourself growing, as a professional, in the next five years, thanks to this opportunity?

Be precise and concise about your dreams, and align them with the company vision.

Key takeaways

Within this Enhancv guide, we've provided you with plenty of advice and inspiration on writing your copywriter cover letter:

  • Always make sure your copywriter cover letter is tailored to the role you're applying for to make a good impression on recruiters;
  • In your copywriter cover letter include a header (with your name, the role you're applying for, date, and contact details) and an introduction of up to two sentences that highlight your key accomplishment or why you'd fit the role;
  • Focus your copywriter cover letter body on one sole achievement through your career and all the valuable lessons, skills, and know-how you've learned (that are relevant to the role);
  • Ensure your copywriter cover letter closing statement isn't generic and includes either a call to action or a promise;
  • If you lack professional experience, shift recruiters' focus to a relevant achievement (thanks to your academic or versatile experience) or toward your dreams and goals for professional growth.

How to Write a Copywriter Cover Letter:

A complete guide that highlights the steps you need to take to build a professional copywriter cover letter.

Address your cover letter to a specific person.

Address your cover letter to the hiring manager..

Research the company you are applying to and find the name of the hiring manager. Address your cover letter directly to that person using either their title and last name or the first name.

Start with a great hook.

Discuss the position you're applying for..

Briefly describe what position you are applying for and where you saw the job advertisement. Then, sell yourself with a great hook that will catch the recruiter's attention and show them why you would be an asset to the company.

Show off your knowledge of the company.

Mention recently released items or news about the company..

With the research you have done on the company, mention some recent products, projects, news, or characteristics that you liked or were impressed with. This shows the company that you are interested in working for them, especially if you can relate your work history to the news or characteristics you've mentioned.

Showcase your skills.

Exhibit your skills and back them up with quantifiable data..

Use examples from your resume to show the recruiter why you're the best candidate for the position. While you should mention particular technical skills that were noted in the job advertisement, you should also demonstrate your soft skills, such as teamwork, communication, and implementing feedback to improve your work.

Cite the results of your work as much as possible and include quantifiable data where possible. When it comes to technical skills, web and mobile experience and design skills are very much in demand for copywriters. If you have any skills or experience in these areas, be sure to highlight them in your cover letter.

Remember not to copy and paste from your resume but rather use your cover letter to expand on the skills and experience noted in your resume.

End with a call to action.

Grab the recruiters attention..

End your cover letter by drawing the recruiter's attention to your attached resume and work samples (if requested) and invite them to contact you. Sign off your letter with an appropriate salutation, such as "sincerely," and your full name.

Edit your cover letter.

Carefully comb through your cover letter for any errors..

As a copywriter, you will not only be showing off your skills with examples from your work history but also with your writing style in your cover letter. It is essential that you write clean, concise copy with no spelling or grammar mistakes.

Before sending off your application, go over your cover letter, fix any errors, and make sure your sentences are to the point . This will probably be the most important step in writing your copywriter cover letter. Many recruiters will simply throw out your application if you have made basic errors, like spelling mistakes, in your writing.

Writing Tip:

Show that you can understand and follow guidelines by tailoring your writing to the specific copywriter position you are applying for. This will showcase your ability to target your audience and sell your personal brand.

How to Write a Cover Letter With No Experience (Examples Included!)

Getty Images

Writing a cover letter with no experience might feel like an intimidating task. The anxiety of facing a blank page—often with that inner voice whispering you may not be qualified enough—can indeed be paralyzing. But guess what? We’ve all been there, and trust me, you can do it too.

Everyone who has a job today started with no experience and had to write their first cover letter . Some of us even did it in a time when technology wasn’t around to help out (thankfully, things have changed!).

Need some guidance on writing yours? Here is everything you need to know to craft a cover letter with no experience, plus examples to guide you through the process.

What is a cover letter?

First things first: A cover letter is a document that you send to introduce yourself when applying for a job or internship. It complements your resume, providing more insight into who you are and the skills and qualifications that make you perfect for the role.

Think of it like a virtual handshake with the hiring manager. It’s your first interaction and your chance to quickly introduce yourself to secure an interview. Together with your resume , the cover letter is your opportunity to make a strong impression.

Why should you write a cover letter

Writing a cover letter, even if you lack experience, can set you apart from other candidates. It gives you space to delve more deeply into the skills and qualifications mentioned on your resume.

“Rather than focusing on what you have not accomplished yet in your career, focus on what you bring to the table: your skills, competencies, personality traits, and the values that you have developed in your life and education,” says Eloïse Eonnet , career coach and communication skills expert.

How to write a cover letter with no experience: 7 tips

When writing your cover letter, keep in mind your goal: leaving a positive first impression on the reader. It should include relevant information for the position you're applying for and maintain a professional yet engaging tone.

That’s your chance to convince the recruiter that you are the right person for the job and schedule an interview. “So, make sure you are clear on what skills and competencies you bring, and what personality traits make you a great fit,” says Eonnet.

If you still feel stuck and don’t know where to start, here's our seven-step guide on how to write a cover letter with no experience:

1. Check the company and job description

The first step in crafting a well-written cover letter is to research the company where you want to work. Carefully review what the organization shares about its values and culture on social media or its website to understand how you can relate to it in your letter.

The job description should also be examined closely because it typically includes keywords that you can incorporate into your cover letter when explaining your skills and competencies.

2. Include contact details

Mastering the cover letter format is as important as the content itself. Traditionally, a cover letter begins with your name and contact details—ensuring that if the recruiter decides to interview you, the information will be visible and easy to find.

And below your information, right before your opening paragraph, should be the hiring manager contact details. This format is considered more professional and is what is typically expected from candidates.

For example:

[Your First and Last Name]

[Phone number]

[Optional, unless it’s asked for: Your address]

[Date you're sending the letter]

[Hiring managers First and Last Name]

3. Begin with a friendly yet professional greeting

Remember, a cover letter is your initial interaction with the hiring manager, but in a virtual setting. Like in the real world, you begin with a greeting and then proceed to introduce yourself.

Choose a formal greeting such as “ Dear First and Last Name” , avoiding casual words like “ Hi” or “ Hey” to keep a professional tone. After that, you can start your first paragraph by introducing yourself and stating the position you are applying for.

Dear Lucia Carter,

My name is Alana Reeves, and I’m excited to apply for the Copywriter position at ABC Agency, which I discovered on LinkedIn. As a recent graduate from Columbia University, I’d be thrilled to work for a company that aligns with [Company’s values and/or culture].

4. Highlight relevant qualifications

Now, it’s time to showcase that you have what it takes to fulfill the desired position. When writing a cover letter with no experience, the key is to emphasize any relevant skills and competencies, detailing how they were developed.

“If a candidate has no work experience to pull from, I suggest that they talk about projects they completed at school, courses they took, extracurricular activities and community based projects they focused on, and even personal life events and projects they have experienced,” says Eonnet.

Filter what’s most relevant to the role you’re applying for and create a link between your skills and the job description.

“ Since my first semester at school, I’ve cultivated a passion for producing digital content for companies and institutions. I acted on this by creating a blog for the Mass Communication's website, where I wrote stories that captured the daily lives of the students on campus and the Columbia University culture. I also created a series providing recommendations of books, websites, films and TV shows relevant to a Mass Communication graduate.”

5. Showcase hard and soft skills

At this point, you’ve probably heard about hard and soft skills , right? Hard skills are technical abilities or knowledge that you can acquire through education, work experience, or training, whereas soft skills are linked to behavior and interpersonal relationships.

Recruiters seek candidates with a good mix of both types of skills, and the second and third paragraphs of your cover letter are perfect to show that you have what they are looking for.

“Show, do’’t tell! Rather than list your traits, they need to be in context of your past experience, even if it’s not official ’work experience,’” says Eonnet. So, use what you know about the company to show why you’re a good fit—be sure to explain how your skills match their needs.

“ During my four years as a blog content creator, I developed a strong understanding of SEO strategy, creative copywriting, and data analysis using Google Analytics, attracting approximately 1000 monthly visitors to the blog. I also applied my communication and self-management skills by interviewing students and managing the content by myself.”

If you have any top accomplishments, whether personal or academic, you can also include them in this section of your cover letter.

6. Close professionally

Wrap up your cover letter by reiterating your interest in the position and closing with a professional sign-off . You can use an engaging and friendly tone—and even ask for an interview—but don’t go overboard. Avoid overly casual language like “See you soon” or “Cheers”.

“I’m impressed by ABC Agency’s culture and creative approach to copywriting. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss my qualifications further in an interview.

Thank you for considering my application.

Best regards,

Alana Reeves”

7. Proofread carefully

This should go without saying, but make sure to submit a flawless letter free from grammatical, spelling, or punctuation errors. Unfortunately, even great candidates can be overlooked if their cover letter or resume has too many mistakes.

To avoid this, take time to proofread your writing before submission. Remember, you’re not the only one job hunting, and recruiters probably go through tons of cover letters and resumes daily. Anything less than impeccable could be a deal-breaker.

What to avoid when writing your cover letter

Understanding what not to say is also helpful when crafting a cover letter without experience. Here are two things to steer clear of:

Don’t be too apologetic

It’s easy to fall into the trap of downplaying your past experiences just because they weren’t formal jobs. However, you should—or at least try to—avoid this negative and overly apologetic approach at all costs.

“I would definitely avoid qualifying any past experience (school projects, odd jobs, internships, community service, personal projects) as ’not work experience.’ I see candidates use an apologetic tone sometimes, which is counterproductive.” says Eonnet.

Don’t focus on your lack of experience

If you’re searching for tips on how to write a cover letter with no experience, examples and such, chances are you're applying for an entry level position. In this case, avoid dedicating too much space in your letter to the fact that you haven’t had a traditional job.

“Recruiters who are looking to fill an entry-level role do not expect you to have a bunch of full-time work experience. Rather, they’re looking for candidates who are self-aware, ready to work, and interested in the position.” says Eonnet.

Rooftop where gunman shot at Trump was identified as a security vulnerability before rally: sources

The rooftop where a gunman shot at former President Donald Trump during a campaign rally was identified by the Secret Service as a potential vulnerability in the days before the event, two sources familiar with the agency’s operations told NBC News.

The building, owned by a glass research company, is adjacent to the Butler Farm Show, an outdoor venue in Butler, Pennsylvania. The Secret Service was aware of the risks associated with it, the sources said.

“Someone should have been on the roof or securing the building so no one could get on the roof,” said one of the sources, a former senior Secret Service agent who was familiar with the planning.

Understanding how the gunman got onto the roof — despite those concerns — is a central question for investigators scrutinizing how a lone attacker managed to shoot at Trump during Saturday’s campaign event.

The Secret Service worked with local law enforcement to maintain event security, including sniper teams poised on rooftops to identify and eliminate threats, Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said. But no officers were posted on the building used by the would-be assassin, outside the event’s security perimeter but only about 148 yards from the stage — within range of a semiautomatic rifle like the one the gunman was carrying.

The Secret Service had designated that rooftop as being under the jurisdiction of local law enforcement, a common practice in securing outdoor rallies, Guglielmi said.Butler County District Attorney Richard Goldinger said his office maintains an Emergency Services Unit team, which deployed four sniper teams and four “quick response teams” at the rally. But he said the Secret Service agents were in charge of security outside the venue.

“They had meetings in the week prior. The Secret Service ran the show. They were the ones who designated who did what,” Goldinger said. “In the command hierarchy, they were top, they were No. 1.”

Goldinger said the commander of the Emergency Services Unit told him it was not responsible for securing areas outside the venue. “To me, the whole thing is under the jurisdiction of the Secret Service. And they will delineate from there,” he said.

The former senior Secret Service agent also said that even if local law enforcement “did drop the ball,” it’s still the agency’s responsibility “to ensure that they are following through either beforehand or in the moment.”

“Just because it is outside of the perimeter, it doesn’t take it out of play for a vulnerability, and you’ve got to mitigate it in some fashion,” the source added.

Donald Trump Rally Shooting

A volley of shots rang out minutes into Trump’s speech. He reached for his right ear — he said later it was pierced by a bullet — then dropped to the ground as Secret Service agents rushed to shield him. Trump emerged with blood on his ear and his face. One attendee was killed , and two others were injured.Witnesses listening to Trump’s speech from outside the event’s security perimeter recalled pointing out the gunman to law enforcement a couple of minutes before the shooting began. After the gunfire started, Secret Service personnel shot and killed the 20-year-old gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks .

The clamor over the Secret Service’s biggest failure since the shooting of President Ronald Reagan in 1981 is coming from both political parties, from former agents and from security experts.

“My question is: How did he get onto that roof undetected?” said Anthony Cangelosi, a former Secret Service agent who worked on protective details for presidential candidates, including John Kerry in 2004.

The Secret Service’s work on campaign events like Saturday’s begins with advance planning, setting up a security perimeter and positioning teams on the ground and on rooftops — often in partnership with local law enforcement. The ground deployments include a counterassault team, and the rooftop personnel include counter-sniper teams.

Police officers at Donald Trump's Rally

Guglielmi, the Secret Service spokesman, said the agency had two of its counterassault agents at the event and filled out the rest of the platoon with at least six officers from Butler County tactical units. The Secret Service also deployed two counter-sniper teams. Two other security units needed for the event were staffed by local law enforcement agencies, Guglielmi said. Those details were first reported by The Washington Post.Investigators will want to examine the Secret Service’s site security plan for the rally, said Cangelosi, the former Secret Service agent. He expects they’ll discover one of two things: Either officials failed to make an effective plan for keeping potential shooters off the building Crooks fired from, or officers on the ground failed to execute the plan.

“I don’t like making any assumptions, but it does look like some mistakes were made, that this was preventable,” said Cangelosi, now a lecturer at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York.

Although it’s common to task local law enforcement agencies with patrolling outside an event’s security perimeter, Cangelosi said, the ultimate responsibility for ensuring that all vulnerabilities are covered rests with the Secret Service.

If officials had placed an officer on the building where the gunman fired from, Cangelosi said, chances are he “wouldn’t even attempt what he attempted.”

“You don’t surrender the discretion of what’s supposed to be done to the local police,” he said. “In other words, you guys have the outer perimeter, but you would want to say, ‘We need an officer on that roof.’ Not ‘that’s your responsibility; do what you see fit.’”

Jim Cavanaugh, a retired special agent in charge with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives who has worked on Secret Service details, told NBC News that while the Secret Service did a good job taking out the gunman after shots began, the failure to post officers on the building he scaled was “a tremendous lapse.”

“The only way to stop that is you have a lot of people, you get there first, and you command the high ground,” Cavanaugh said. “This is basic, and the Secret Service has done it for years successfully, so I’m really surprised that they did not have that high ground covered.”

Police snipers at Donald Trump's Rally

The questions extended to Congress, where members demanded answers from the Secret Service and its parent agency, the Department of Homeland Security.“This raises serious concerns regarding how a shooter was able to access a rooftop within range and direct line of sight of where President Trump was speaking,” House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green, R-Tenn., wrote in a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

Green asked Mayorkas to provide documentation relating to the event’s security plan, the screening of attendees and the level of resources provided to Trump’s Secret Service detail. A committee spokesperson told NBC News that Republican members would hold a briefing with Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle on Monday “to voice their concerns and ask pressing questions.”

Another lawmaker, Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., wrote Cheatle asking who approved the security plan, whether a proper threat assessment was conducted, whether attendees raised alarms and whether there were failures in following protocols that allowed the attack to happen.

“I call on all those responsible for the planning, approving, and executing of this failed security plan to be held accountable and to testify before Congress immediately,” Gallego wrote in a letter to Cheatle .

Robert McDonald, a former Secret Service agent who ran protection for Joe Biden when he was vice president, told NBC News that he believes the assassination attempt will prompt soul-searching and procedural changes at the agency.

“The Secret Service is going to need to ask some hard questions of itself here and be prepared to stand up and represent why, what happened,” McDonald said.

Election 2024 Trump

Cangelosi, the former Secret Service agent, said investigators are also likely to ask when agents identified Crooks as a potential threat, how they reacted and whether it’s possible they could have taken him down before he fired at Trump.Secret Service snipers are trained to make rapid decisions, he said. But it’s possible that if they noticed Crooks on the roof but couldn’t tell whether he had a rifle, agents might have waited to fire on him.

“If the sniper can’t tell whether he has a gun, he or she is not going to take the shot,” Cangelosi said. “Because God forbid it’s a child who’s just excited to see a political candidate, right? So you want to make sure that there’s actually a threat.”

If there was uncertainty, Cangelosi said, it’s possible the sniper team would have dispatched officers to investigate and confirm. But investigating a potential threat can take minutes, he said, while a gunman with a semiautomatic rifle can fire several shots in a matter of seconds.

That’s why, Cangelosi said, the best defense would have been to plan ahead to keep the shooter off the roof in the first place.

“Who wants to be in that position?” he said of the snipers protecting Trump on Saturday. “You’ve got to make a split-second call. And imagine if you’re wrong.”

Copywriter Role Cover Letter

Copywriters and CV connoisseurs feedback would be much appreciated! Thank you.

I have written cover letters for previous applications, but never for a copywriting position. For this reason, the task seems all the more daunting. It's as if I am proving my skills/putting them to the test simply by writing the CV. I will be graduating in December as a Marketing major with copywriting experience and this particular position is entry level.

Should I write this CV as I would for any other position? Or does there need to be some added pizzazz?

Secret Service Under Scrutiny After Assassination Attempt on Trump

President Biden calls for a review of the protective agency’s actions after the attack, which left an audience member dead and two critically wounded.

President Biden on Sunday called for an “independent review” of security measures before and after the attempted assassination of former President Donald J. Trump, while directing the Secret Service to review all of its security measures for the Republican National Convention this week.

Mr. Biden’s directive, though brief and without specifics, is likely to increase the scrutiny of the decisions and possible failures of the agency charged first and foremost with protecting the lives of the country’s current and former leaders, and their families.

Less than 24 hours after Mr. Trump was injured at a campaign rally in Butler, Pa., members of Congress were promising hearings and former law enforcement officials were questioning why the warehouse roof where the would-be assassin, Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pa., fired shots was not covered by the Secret Service’s security perimeter, despite being within the range of some guns.

Mr. Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, was herded off the stage and pronounced fine, but the gunman came shockingly close to succeeding. A spectator was killed in the shooting and two others were critically wounded.

“Congress will do a full investigation of the tragedy yesterday to determine where there were lapses in security and anything else that the American people need to know and deserve to know,” Speaker Mike Johnson, Republican of Louisiana, said Sunday on NBC.

The chair of the House oversight committee also asked the Secret Service director, Kimberly A. Cheatle, to testify at a hearing on July 22.

How could a gunman get close enough to shoot and injure Trump? The Secret Service is investigating

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Secret Service is investigating how a gunman armed with an AR-style rifle was able to get close enough to shoot and injure former President Donald Trump at a rally Saturday in Pennsylvania, in a devastating failure of one of the agency’s core duties.

The FBI on Sunday identified the shooter as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.

The gunman, who officials said was killed by Secret Service personnel, fired multiple shots at the stage from an “elevated position outside of the rally venue,” the agency said.

An Associated Press analysis of more than a dozen videos and photos taken at the Trump rally, as well as satellite imagery of the site, shows the shooter was able to get astonishingly close to the stage where the former president was speaking. A video posted to social media and geolocated by the AP shows Crooks’ body lying motionless on the roof of a manufacturing plant just north of the Butler Farm Show grounds, where Trump’s rally was held. A different image shows Crooks wearing a gray T-shirt with a black American flag on the right arm, with a bloody wound to his head.

The roof was fewer than 150 meters (164 yards) from where Trump was speaking, a distance from which a decent marksman could reasonably hit a human-sized target. For reference, 150 meters is a distance at which U.S. Army recruits must hit a human-sized silhouette to qualify with the M16 assault rifle in basic training. The AR-style rifle, like that of the gunman at the Trump rally, is the semiautomatic civilian version of the military M16.

President Joe Biden said Sunday he has directed an independent review of the security at the rally.

Biden said he also directed the U.S. Secret Service to review all security measures for the Republican National Convention, which begins Monday in Milwaukee. Audrey Gibson-Cicchino, the Secret Service’s coordinator for the convention, told reporters later the agency was satisfied with what she called its comprehensive planning for the Republican convention.

Biden urged Americans not to make assumptions about the motive of the shooter. He said investigators are working swiftly to investigate the attack.

“Unity is the most elusive goal of all,” he said, but “nothing is more important than that right now.”

Calls for an investigation came from all sides.

Rep. Mark Green, a Tennessee Republican who chairs the House Committee on Homeland Security, sent a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Sunday raising questions about the shooting and demanding information about the former president’s Secret Service protection.

“The seriousness of this security failure and chilling moment in our nation’s history cannot be understated,” Green wrote.

The Secret Service did not have a speaker at a news conference Saturday night where FBI and Pennsylvania State Police officials briefed reporters on the shooting investigation. FBI Special Agent in Charge Kevin Rojek said it was “surprising” that the gunman was able to fire at the stage before he was killed.

Members of the Secret Service’s counter-sniper team and counterassault team were at the rally, according to two law enforcement officials. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to discuss details of the investigation.

The heavily armed counterassault team, whose Secret Service code name is “Hawkeye,” is responsible for eliminating threats so that other agents can shield and take away the person they are protecting. The counter-sniper team, known by the code name “Hercules,” uses long-range binoculars and is equipped with sniper rifles to deal with long-range threats.

Mayorkas said his department and the Secret Service are working with law enforcement to investigate the shooting. Maintaining the security of presidential candidates and their campaign events is one of the department’s “most vital priorities,” he said.

“We condemn this violence in the strongest possible terms and commend the Secret Service for their swift action today,” Mayorkas said. “We are engaged with President Biden, former President Trump and their campaigns, and are taking every possible measure to ensure their safety and security.“

Green also noted reports that the Secret Service had rebuffed requests from the Trump campaign for additional security. A spokesman for the Secret Service, Anthony Guglielmi, said on X Sunday that those allegations were “absolutely false” and that they had added resources and technology as the campaign’s travel increased.

Green said he would be talking with Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle on Sunday.

Former top Secret Service agents told The AP that Crooks should never have been allowed to gain access to the roof, and the agency will have to figure out how that happened. They said such a lapse could have been caused by officers neglecting their posts or a flaw in the event’s security plan.

The agency is “going to have to go through the security plan and interview a number of people from the director on down” to figure out what went wrong, said Stephen Colo, who retired in 2003 as an assistant director after a 27-year career in the service.

Colo said presidential candidates and former presidents don’t typically get the same level of protection as the sitting president. In fact, Colo said he was surprised that the agency had staffed the event with a counter-sniper team. Such a valuable resource — there are not many of those highly trained agents — is usually reserved for the president. Candidates don’t usually get such teams.

Timothy McCarthy, a former agent who retired from the agency in 1994, said the Secret Service “better be doing a deep dive into what happened there and doing whatever it takes to figure it out” because the gunman should not have been able to occupy such a vantage point.

“How did that person get up on that building?” said McCarthy, 75, who in 1981 took a bullet when President Ronald Reagan was shot outside the Washington Hilton Hotel. “How did that happen? I mean, that’s the key to the entire thing. And what measures were put in place to prevent it?”

READ MORE: What political leaders have said about the Trump rally shooting

James Comer, a Kentucky Republican who is the House Oversight Committee chairman, said he contacted the Secret Service for a briefing and called on Cheatle to appear for a hearing. Comer said his committee will send a formal invitation soon.

“Political violence in all forms is un-American and unacceptable. There are many questions and Americans demand answers,” Comer said in a statement.

U.S. Rep. Ritchie Torres, a New York Democrat, called for investigating “security failures” at the rally.

“The federal government must constantly learn from security failures in order to avoid repeating them, especially when those failures have implications for the nation,” Torres said.

Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers, a Democrat, posted on X that he and his staff are in contact with security planning coordinators ahead of the Republican National Convention set to begin Monday in Milwaukee. “We cannot be a country that accepts political violence of any kind — that is not who we are as Americans,” Evers said.

The FBI said it will lead the investigation into the shooting, working with the Secret Service and local and state law enforcement.

Attorney General Merrick Garland said the Justice Department “will bring every available resource to bear to this investigation.”

“My heart is with the former President, those injured, and the family of the spectator killed in this horrific attack,” Garland said in a statement. “We will not tolerate violence of any kind, and violence like this is an attack on our democracy.”

Trump survives assassination attempt at campaign rally, as it unfolded

The FBI is investigating Saturday’s shooting at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania as an attempted assassination and act of domestic terror. However authorities say, a motive has not yet been identified.

Today’s live coverage has ended. See what you missed below and follow live election updates for July 15, 2024.

Law enforcement officials are working to learn more about the 20-year-old who tried to assassinate former President Donald Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday.

In a briefing Sunday, FBI officials told reporters they had yet to determine what motivated the shooter to open fire from a nearby rooftop, killing one spectator and critically injuring two others before he was shot dead by the Secret Service. The FBI believes the shooter acted alone.

What to know:

  • More on the shooter: The FBI named Thomas Matthew Crooks , 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the suspect behind the apparent assassination attempt. In a briefing with reporters, FBI officials said the AR-style rifle used in the attack was legally purchased by the gunman’s father.
  • Latest on the victims: The man who was killed at the rally was identified as Corey Comperatore, a former fire chief from the area who used his body to shield his family. At least two other people were injured: David Dutch, 57, of New Kensington, Pennsylvania and James Copenhaver, 74, of Moon Township, Pennsylvania. Both were listed in stable condition as of Sunday.
  • Biden delivers Oval Office address: In a prime-time national address , the president said “we must not go down” the road of political violence in America and called for unity.

Donald Trump spent much of Sunday on the phone with friends, news hosts and local and foreign officials the day after he was injured in an assassination attempt.

Ohio Pastor Darrell Scott, a longtime ally, said Trump “was in great spirits” when they spoke Sunday morning, hours after the shooting.

“He was great, like he always is. He didn’t even make a big deal of it,” Scott said. “He was actually trying to downplay it somewhat, asking how I was doing.”

Former RNC chair Reince Priebus, who also served as Trump’s White House chief of staff, told ABC’s “This Week” that Trump was “grateful for the miracle of what happened, in his case. ... One quarter inch turned the other direction and we’re obviously talking about something very different this morning.”

Within minutes of the gunfire, the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump spawned a vast sea of claims reflecting the frightening uncertainties of the moment as well as America’s fevered, polarized political climate.

Associated Press journalists recall the scene when a shooter fired at former President Donald Trump during a rally.

Tony Perkins, among the most influential Christian conservatives in the Republican Party, was preparing to mount a confrontation with convention planners over his disdain for how debate during the RNC’s platform committee was shut down on Monday, all but eliminating objections to the Trump campaign’s desire to soften language on abortion.

The attempted assassination changed all that, Perkins told The Associated Press after a prayer service in suburban Milwaukee Sunday evening.

“We live in a violent society. And we run the risk of becoming callous to it. And if we become callous to it, we’re going to have more of it,” Perkins said. “I’m hoping and praying it’s a wake-up call in many ways.”

“So, as a result, I’m stepping back from forcing the issue on the platform,” he added. “More divisiveness would not be healthy.”

Perkins called social media “a contagion” for toxic rhetoric passed along by people who do not feel that they’re heard by their government or leaders, and attributed the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol in part to the notion of overheated online rage.

“We need to stop,” he said.

And while thanking God during the service for Trump’s survival, Perkins told more than 100 in the Pewaukee church, “Lord, I believe that our nation is at such a volatile moment that yesterday could have torn this nation right in half.”

The 20-year-old man who tried to assassinate former President Donald Trump first came to law enforcement’s attention at Saturday’s rally when spectators noticed him acting strangely outside the campaign event. The tip sparked a frantic search, but officers were unable to find him before he managed to get on a roof, where he opened fire.

In the wake of the shooting that killed one spectator, investigators are hunting for any clues about what may have drove Thomas Matthew Crooks, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, to carry out the shocking attack. The FBI said they were investigating it as a potential act of domestic terrorism , but the absence of a clear ideological motive by the man shot dead by Secret Service allowed conspiracy theories to flourish.

The FBI said it believes Crooks, who had bomb-making materials in the car he drove to the rally, acted alone. Investigators have found no threatening comments on social media accounts or ideological positions that could help explain what led him to target Trump.

Crooks graduated from Bethel Park High School in 2022. His senior year, Crooks was among several students given an award for math and science, according to a Tribune-Review story at the time.

He tried out for the school’s rifle team but was turned away because he was a bad shooter, said Frederick Mach, a current captain of the team who was a few years behind Crooks at the school.

Jason Kohler, who said he attended the same high school but did not share any classes with Crooks, said Crooks was bullied at school and sat alone at lunch time. Other students mocked him for the clothes he wore, which included hunting outfits, Kohler said.

Former President Donald Trump told The Washington Examiner that he has rewritten the speech he was set to deliver at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Thursday after being the target of an attempted assassination at his rally Saturday.

“The speech I was going to give on Thursday was going to be a humdinger,” he told the news outlet in an article posted Sunday evening.

In the interview, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee says he will now call for a new effort at national unity, noting that people from different political views have called him.

“This is a chance to bring the whole country, even the whole world, together. The speech will be a lot different, a lot different than it would’ve been two days ago,” he said.

Trump also reflected on the moment a bullet pierced the upper part of his right ear. He said he was saved from death because he turned from the crowd to look at a screen showing off a chart he was referring to.

“That reality is just setting in,” he told the news outlet as he boarded his plane in Bedminster, New Jersey, for Milwaukee. “I rarely look away from the crowd. Had I not done that in that moment, well, we would not be talking today, would we?”

Biden says that during the Republican National Convention, he has “no doubt” Republicans will “criticize my record and offer their own vision for this country.” But he promised in campaigning to lay out “our vision.”

He used the address to urge all Americans not to accept an escalation in political violence as normal.

“We debate and disagree, we compare and contrast ... but in America we resolve our differences at the ballot box,” Biden said in his address.

He added: “Politics must never be a literal battlefield. God forbid a killing field.”

Biden spoke for about five minutes from the Oval Office and noted that the Republican National Convention was opening in Milwaukee on Monday, while he himself would be traveling the country to campaign for reelection.

He said passions would run high on both sides and that the stakes of the election were enormous.

But the president added, “it’s time to cool it down” and noted not just the weekend attack on Trump but also the possibility of election-year violence on multiple fronts.

President Joe Biden says “we can’t, we must not go down” the road of political violence in American after Saturday’s attempted Trump assassination.

In a prime-time national address, Biden said that political passions can run high but “we must never descend into violence.”

“We can do this,” Biden implored, saying the nation was founded on a democracy that gave reason and balance a chance to prevail over brute force. “American democracy — where arguments are made in good faith. American democracy where the rule of law is respected. Where decency, dignity, fair play aren’t just quaint notions, they’re living, breathing realities.”

The president is planning to deliver extended remarks to the nation in an address from the Oval Office starting at 8 p.m. EDT.

His campaign said the president would touch on “the need for every American to come together” to end political violence in the U.S.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with former President Trump on Sunday.

“The Prime Minister condemned yesterday’s appalling assassination attempt and reiterated there’s no place for political violence. The Prime Minister wished the former President well and offered condolences to the shooting victims and to the family of Corey Comperatore,” Trudeau’s office said in a statement.

The former president said earlier Sunday that he was going to delay his trip because of the attempted assassination, but then decided he didn’t want it to force a change in his schedule.

Trump is not expected to speak at the RNC until Thursday night.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson says one of his staff members is no longer employed after he learned of a post she made on social media.

Screenshots of her apparent Facebook post, which was related to the attempted assassination of Trump, circulated on social media after the shooting.

The screenshots showed a post in which the staffer appeared to say she does not condone violence but suggested the shooter should get “shooting lessons” and should not have missed.

The AP was not able to view the user’s private Facebook profile to identify whether the post was still up.

Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers is asking officials to revisit a prior decision that allows people to bring guns within blocks of the Republican National Convention after an assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump, a person familiar with the matter told the Associated Press on Sunday.

Evers believes additional steps need to be taken to keep the convention’s attendees, law enforcement and the local community safe, the person said. The person could not discuss details of the request publicly and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.

The request was made to the U.S. Secret Service, which would bring it to the Republican National Committee, the person said.

The Secret Service said at a news conference Sunday that they were confident in their existing security plan and hadn’t made any changes following the shooting.

The cloudburst of speculation and conjecture as Americans turned to the internet for news about the Trump rally shooting is the latest sign of how social media has emerged as a dominant source of information — and misinformation — for many, and a contributor to the distrust and turbulence now driving American politics.

Mentions of Trump on social media soared up to 17 times the average daily amount in the hours after the shooting, according to PeakMetrics, a cyber firm that tracks online narratives. Many of those mentions were expressions of sympathy for Trump or calls for unity. But many others made unfounded, fantastical claims.

“We saw things like ‘The Chinese were behind it,’ or ‘Antifa was behind it,’ or ‘the Biden administration did it.’ We also saw a claim that the RNC was behind it,’” said Paul Bartel, senior intelligence analyst at PeakMetrics. “Everyone is just speculating. No one really knows what’s going on. They go online to try to figure it out.”

Corey Comperatore’s quick decision to use his body as a shield against the bullets flying toward his wife and daughter rang true to the close friends and neighbors, who loved and respected the proud 50-year-old Trump supporter.

“He’s a literal hero,” said Mike Morehouse, who lived next to Comperatore for the last eight years.

At least two other people were injured at the rally: David Dutch, 57, of New Kensington, Pennsylvania, and James Copenhaver, 74, of Moon Township, Pennsylvania, according to the Pennsylvania State Police. Both were listed in stable condition as of Sunday.

The assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump has parallels to the last time a president or presidential candidate was wounded — in 1981, when Ronald Reagan was nearly killed by an assailant’s bullet.

The shooter at the Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, was able to get astonishingly close to the stage where the former president was speaking, according to an AP analysis of more than a dozen photos and videos from the scene, as well as satellite imagery of the site.

Here’s some of the key moments in the timeline of the shooting:

6:02 p.m. EDT

Image

— Trump takes the stage to the strains of “God Bless the U.S.A.” He waves at the cheering crowd and begins his regular rally speech, with spectators both in front of him and behind him on risers.

Around 6:10 p.m.

— After rally-goers notice a man climbing on the top of the roof of a nearby building, a local law enforcement officer climbs to the roof, according to two law enforcement officials.

— A man identified by the FBI as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks points his rifle at the officer, who retreats down the ladder, the officials said.

— Crooks then quickly fires, according to the officials who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation.

— As the first pop rings out, Trump says, “Oh.” He raises his hand to his right ear and looks at it before quickly crouching to the ground behind his lectern.

— Secret Service agents rush to the stage and pile atop the former president to shield him.

— Corey Comperatore, a 50-year-old former fire chief attending the rally, is shot and killed. Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said Sunday that Comperatore used his body as a shield to protect his wife and daughter.

— Secret Service counter snipers fire back and shoot Crooks.

About 1 minute after the shots

— Video shows Trump getting to his feet and reaching with his right hand toward his face, which was smeared with blood. As Trump stands up, he pumps to the crowd with his right fist.

— Secret Service says “the former president is safe.”

The apparent assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump at a rally Saturday did not prompt any changes to the U.S. Secret Service’s security plan for the Republican National Convention that starts Monday, said Audrey Gibson-Cicchino, the Secret Service’s coordinator for the convention, at a press briefing Sunday.

“We are fully prepared and have a comprehensive security plan in place and are ready to go,” Gibson-Cicchino said.

Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley will speak Tuesday at the Republican National Convention in what will be a highly anticipated speech by former President Donald Trump’s last major challenger in this year’s GOP primary.

Haley, who was also elected twice as South Carolina governor, initially was not among the list of speakers but has since been added to the schedule, according to Haley spokesperson Chaney Denton.

The schedule change was confirmed by a Republican official who is familiar with the convention plans but was not authorized to speak publicly.

The shooter’s family is cooperating with federal investigators, according to an FBI official.

Relatives of Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, have not returned multiple messages from The Associated Press seeking comment.

Attorney General Merrick Garland told reporters that the Justice Department has “no tolerance for such violence and as Americans we must have no tolerance for it.”

“This must stop,” he said.

FBI Director Christopher Wray says authorities “will leave no stone unturned” in their investigation of the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

In a call with reporters Sunday, Wray called the shooting an “attack on democracy and our democratic process.”

“An attempt to assassinate a presidential candidate can only be described as absolutely despicable and will not be tolerated in this country,” Wray said.

The FBI says they believe the AR-style rifle the Trump rally shooter used was legally purchased by the gunman’s father.

Kevin Rojek, special agent in charge of the Pittsburgh Field Office, told reporters that authorities don’t yet know how the shooter gained access to the weapon, and whether he took it without his father’s knowledge.

“These are facts that we’ll flesh out as we conduct interviews,” Rojek said. Authorities recovered the weapon at the scene of the shooting.

FBI Deputy Director Paul Abbate says threatening online rhetoric has been “ticking up” since the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.

He says people are going online to pose as the shooter, who was killed by U.S. Secret Service.

Abbate says they are aware of the increased activity and monitoring it closely.

FBI officials say they believe the Trump rally shooter acted alone.

They have not yet identified an ideology, but they are combing through his social media feeds and the shooter’s weapons. So far, they have not found any threatening writing or social media posts.

FBI officials said they have located a suspicious device and defused it. They have received more than 2,000 tips.

The FBI says it is investigating the Trump rally shooting as an attempted assassination and also an act of domestic terrorism.

The gunman was not previously on the radar screen of the FBI. He’s believed to have acted alone.

The FBI defines domestic terrorism as acts inside the U.S. that are intended to intimidate or coerce civilians or influence government policy.

A crew was power-washing the front of the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company on Sunday with plans to install memorial drapery to honor the slain former chief, Corey Comperatore.

Assistant Chief Ricky Heasley of Sarver, who knew Comperatore for more than a decade, remembers him as very outgoing and full of life.

“He never had a bad word,” Heasley said.

A GoFundMe launched to support Comperatore’s family had already surpassed more than $180,000 in donations as of Sunday.

Biden said he and first lady Jill Biden extend their “deepest condolences” to the family of the man who was killed in the assassination attempt on Trump.

The president said Corey Comperatore was protecting him family from the bullets that were being fired “and he lost his life.” “God love him,” Biden said.

Trump posted a brief message on social media after Biden spoke, saying ‘UNITE AMERICA!’

Not long before shots rang out, rally goers noticed a man climbing to the top of a roof of a nearby building and warned local law enforcement, according to two law enforcement officials.

One officer climbed to the roof and encountered Crooks, who pointed his rifle at the officer. The officer retreated down the ladder and Crooks quickly took a shot toward former President Donald Trump, and that’s when the U.S. Secret Service counter snipers shot him, said the officials who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation.

Former President Donald Trump says he’ll travel to Milwaukee on Sunday afternoon ahead of the Republican National Convention.

Trump said on his Truth Social platform that he was going to delay his trip after Saturday’s apparent assassination attempt, but decided he cannot “allow a ‘shooter,’ or potential assassin, to force change to scheduling, or anything else.”

Image

President Biden said he’s directed an independent review of the security at the rally Saturday where a gunman apparently tried to assassinate Donald Trump.

Biden said he has also directed the U.S. Secret Service to review all security measures for the Republican National Convention which begins Monday in Milwaukee.

Biden urged Americans not to make assumptions about the motive of the shooter, who was killed by U.S. Secret Service. He says they’re working swiftly to investigate the incident.

“Unity is the most elusive goal of all,” he added, while urging the public to strive for it.

President Joe Biden says he’ll address the nation from the Oval Office on Sunday evening at 8 p.m. following the apparent assassination attempt of Donald Trump at a political rally.

Biden spoke briefly Sunday afternoon saying he and Jill Biden were praying for the family of the person killed at the rally and that he was sincerely grateful that Trump is “doing well and recovering.”

Biden says: “There’s no place in America for this kind of violence, or any violence for that matter.”

An NBC News interview between President Joe Biden and anchor Lester Holt on Monday will now occur at the White House, the network said Sunday.

Initially, the interview was scheduled to take place in Austin, Texas, but the White House announced earlier Sunday that Biden’s trip there has been postponed in the wake of the shooting at a rally for former President Donald Trump.

Copywriter resume examples

If you search for copywriter resume examples, there’s a good chance you’ve found pages upon pages of templates. And even though resume templates can be helpful, real examples give you a better idea of what is expected for your resume.

Ádám Mattyasovszky - Lead Creative / Kraftwork

The about page and copywriter resume of Ádám Mattyasovszky, Lead Creative at Kraftwork.

Ádám, who's the lead creative of the advertising agency Kraftwork combined the about page of his portfolio and his copywriter resume. That gave him the space to get started with a short summary of himself, followed by his work history, clients he's worked with, and info about his educational background.

Choosing to make his CV a page on his website, he didn't have to worry about "trying to fit it into one page" as most people do, when they go with the traditional PDF format. He created his portfolio website and resume with Copyfolio .

Karly Nelson - Copywriter / ATI Physical Therapy

The contact page and copywriter resume of Karly Nelson.

Similar to Ádám, Karly also hosts her resume on her portfolio website. But the difference is that Karly first designed hers as a one-pager, and then added the image of it to her site. It's clearly readable, fun, and totally on-brand, following a more traditional CV structure.

You can find all the important info about her, including her contact information, skills, work experience, education, and even some of her extracurricular activities. Interestingly, she didn't add it to her about page but placed it on her contact page instead.

Karly also created her website with Copyfolio, using the "Letterpress" template .

Katie Rivard - Associate Creative Director / SapientRazorfish

screenshot of the copywriter resume of Katie Rivard, associate creative director at SapientRazorfish

Not your boring CV. That’s the first thought that comes to mind when you see Katie’s copywriter resume. Even though it’s just one page and simple in a way that it lacks descriptions, it has all the information you could possibly need.

In the header, she has her phone number, email address, a link to her portfolio, and her LinkedIn profile link.

Right underneath is her name in big bold letters, followed by her position. All the resume-specific information is organized into four straightforward columns:

  • Brands she’s worked with,
  • The types of projects she has experience with,
  • Her educational background and
  • The agencies she’s worked for in reverse chronological order.

Her resume is great, as it stands out from the crowd with its design -and it’s informative, yet concise. You’d be surprised how little time hiring managers spend looking at each resume. So presenting the necessary information in the briefest way possible is crucial.

Graham Bowlin - Senior Copywriter / Cashmere Agency

screenshot of the copywriter resume of Graham Bowlin, senior copywriter

Graham’s copywriter resume is not a stand-alone PDF, but a page hosted on his writing portfolio website . At first glance, the design already grabs your attention –but so does the copy. He starts out with a professional header, immediately showcasing his excellent copywriting skills:

“I know what you're thinking. Professional stuff? Aw, man. Can't anyone just get to know each other anymore? Work is so boring. Wrong. You're wrong.”

Underneath you find two sections: one for his work experience and another for his education. Then right at the bottom, you’ll find his email address and Twitter account, should you want to reach out to him.

Yet again: short and sweet, straightforward but grabs your attention. Exactly what you need for a resume.

Jessica Urgo - ACD, Copywriter / Freelance

screenshot of the copywriter resume of Jessica Urgo, freelance copywriter

Jessica decided to combine the traditional one-pager PDF format with the “hosting it on my website” approach. On the left, there is a little introduction and facts about her: the books she’s been reading and what she’s studying at the moment.

Then on the right, you have the neatly designed and colorful CV itself. It’s interesting to note that she didn’t include her education and instead decided to focus on her experience, dividing it into three main categories.

Apart from that and her contact information, she features her awards and social media links as well.

Andrew Burke - Senior Copywriter / Bravvura

screenshot of the copywriter resume of Andrew Burke, Senior copywriter at Bravvura

You’d expect a CV to be a little boring, right? Not when it comes to resumes like the one Andrew has. Instead of a single sentence summary, he starts out with a whole section of copy.

You’ll learn that he’s a copywriter, cinephile, and three-item list lover. Then you’ll see a three-item list right underneath that statement. See what he did there? This section is great for showing off his personality and writing skills, warming you up for checking out his CV.

The actual copywriter resume is fairly simple and has the usual sections: experience, education, and awards. Plus, he also added freelance and projects to show his work beyond his full-time positions.

And just to make sure you still won’t get bored, he ends with “an incomplete list of personal achievements” with hilarious items such as being the world’s youngest person.

And in case you’d need it, Andrew gives you an option to download his resume as a PDF at the end.

Stephanie Alkhoury - Creative Copywriter

The about page and resume of Stephanie Alkhoury, featured on her portfolio website.

Stephanie created a visually perfectly balanced resume page that gives you the whole picture. You'll see her name and photo, which helps you build a more personal connection. That's followed by a short introduction to her background, and the actual resume itself.

She follows a work experience - skills - education order, leading the reader through the CV in the order she thinks is most important. She created her copywriter resume using Copyfolio .

Dušan Koutský - Senior Copywriter / WMLY&R

screenshot of the copywriter resume of Dusan Koutsky, senior copywriter

If you want to see a creative copywriter resume, you need to check out what Dušan has done. It’s another website-based resume, made unique by the icons and animations he’s using.

Going against the standard, he lists his experiences in chronological order, marking his first junior position with a stroller, the second with a baby icon. As you scroll down, the animation takes you through these job life stages, right to his current senior copywriter position.

Underneath in sections that you can open up, you can check his awards and education too, if you’re interested.

David Oswald - Creative Director / TBWA\Media Arts Lab

screenshot of the copywriter resume of David Oswald, creative director at TBWA

Similarly to Jessica, David also didn’t include education in his CV -and frankly, he doesn’t need to. His awards and experience speak for themselves.

After his short summary, he features the logos of clients he worked with. Impressive in itself, this section includes logos of companies like Apple, Netflix, Facebook, Google, Adidas, Nike, and more.

Next, he goes on to list his awards and only then writes about his work history. The design of his CV is simple, but the structure of the resume leads the viewer nicely and gives a clear overview of David’s experience.

Juliana Paracencio - Global Creative Director / Ogilvy London

screenshot of the copywriter resume of Juliana Paracencio, Global Creative Director at Ogilvy London

The resume page of Juliana Paracencio is a more typical example of how copywriter resumes usually look. Many copywriters have their CVs as a page on their website, with a very simple text-based, black and white design.

And there’s nothing wrong with that. The only thing you need to pay attention to is the sections. As long as the different sections are separated clearly and there’s enough white space on the page so that the text won’t feel overwhelming… It’s perfect.

Note how Juliana also decided not to list her educational background. With such a long list of awards, including not one but three golden Cannes Lions, there’s not really a need for it anymore, right?

Nicholas Berson - Copywriter / Hylink Digital Solutions

screenshot of the copywriter resume of Nicholas Berson, found on his website

Clear, concise, easy to browse through. That's probably the best way to describe the about page and resume of Nicholas Berson. He uses the formatting and generous white space to draw the eye to each section and outlines his experience and skills with no fluff in-between. And all he used to create it was Copyfolio .

How to write a copywriter resume

Now that you’ve seen some examples and got some inspiration, let’s get into the theory behind. Don’t worry, it’s going to be pretty easy! We’ll outline how to write your copywriter resume in 5 quick steps.

The header of your resume is probably what people will look at first. It’s the place for your most important information:

  • Phone number
  • Email address
  • LinkedIn page
  • And a link to your portfolio.

Your CV and writing portfolio go hand in hand, you cannot have a copywriter resume without a portfolio accompanying it. And as recruiters spend maybe 10 seconds browsing through your resume and 10 minutes checking out your portfolio, make sure the link to it is easily accessible.

After all, your CV only has the hard facts, but it’s your portfolio that will really show off your skills and blow everyone away.

2. Copywriter resume summary or objectives

This section is not absolutely necessary, but still good to have. Originally, this is supposed to be a blurb summarizing your experience or outlining your career objectives: where you’re heading and what your goals are.

What it really is though, is a chance for you to show off your copywriting skills, add a dash of personality, and catch the viewer’s attention.

And as a copywriter, people will expect this part to be really damn good. So if you decide to include it, don’t be afraid to spend more time on it.

3. Work experience

When it comes to listing your previous work experiences, there are three different approaches you can follow, based on whether you’ve been working mostly freelance or in-house. Let’s review them quickly!

Chronological for experienced in-house copywriters

For copywriters who have spent their working years at advertising agencies or working in-house, listing experiences in reverse chronological order is the best way to go.

What this means is that you start from your current or most recent position and work your way back in time. This format is easy to overview and one that hiring managers expect.

Functional resume format for freelancers or beginners

Reverse chronological resumes don’t really work for freelancers or beginners with not much work experience. But that’s okay because you can go with a functional resume instead.

What is a functional resume? Exactly as it sounds: you list your experiences, not by company (or client), but by skills or project types you’re expert at.

And at the end, you can still list some longer collaborations or positions you deem worthy.

Separate projects section for a mix

If you have a good amount of experience both freelancing and working in-house, you can easily create a CV with a mix of the two formats above. First write down your in-house or agency positions in a regular, reverse chronological order. Then add a projects section to detail your freelance work.

Pro tip: use power words!

As a copywriter, you must know that choosing the words carefully is always important. It’s not any different in your resume either. Make sure to use actionable words to make your resume more impactful. Words like these:

4. Education and awards

As you could see from the examples above, there are different approaches when it comes to including education and awards. Some people do both, some just one or the other.

The general rule of thumb is that if your list of awards and experiences speak for themselves, you don’t need the education there. But if you’re somewhat lacking in those departments and have relevant education, it’s best to include it.

If you’re at the very beginning of your career with not much work experience, feel free to elaborate on it too. You can beef up your copywriter resume in those early years by writing about relevant coursework and extracurriculars that you did.

5. Skills and other personal touches

The ones above are the most common and most needed sections for a copywriter resume. But you can always take it one step further and include your skills, or add some personal touches.

We compiled a list of skills that often appear in copywriter resumes to give you some ideas:

  • User-focused copywriting
  • Brand research and target audience analysis
  • Creative problem solving and conceptualization
  • Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator
  • HTML, CSS, Javascript
  • SEO-friendly editing and keyword research
  • Good communication and listening skills
  • And goes without saying, but outstanding English skills (grammar, spelling, and punctuation)

But if you like to think outside of the box, you can come up with additional ideas to add to your resume. Just like Andrew Burke did with his list of personal achievements.

Choose a template and fill it with your copy. It's that simple with Copyfolio. Create your portfolio, it's free.

How to create your copywriter resume

There are two main ways where you can go with this:

  • You can either create a standalone PDF, or
  • Add a page to your personal website and write up your resume there.

When you’re browsing copywriter websites and portfolios, it’s common to either see a menu item titled “Resume”, or their CV added or embedded into their about page.

To give you a little more idea about how that’s supposed to look like, we’re adding five more copywriter resume examples:

Amanda Brencys - Creative Director / Grey New York

screenshot of the copywriter resume of Amanda Brencys, creative director at Grey New York

John Friedman - Senior Copywriter / 215 McCann

Benji Shaw - Senior Copywriter / DDB

C.J Thomas - Senior Copywriter / Saatchi & Saatchi

screenshot of the copywriter resume of C.J. Thomas, senior copywriter at Saatchi and Saatchi

Scott Muska - Senior Copywriter / Huge

screenshot of the copywriter resume of Scott Muska, senior copywriter at Huge

For these examples, we chose simpler designs that you can easily recreate yourself. What’s common in them is that they:

  • Use a simple white background, black text and only one font. This keeps the design minimal and coherent. If you follow along, it will be hard to mess it up.
  • Have very clear sections. They all use either columns, lots of white space, or big headers to separate each resume section. It makes the whole resume easy to overview and avoids the text to be overwhelming.
  • Are brief but have the most important information : work experience, awards, education, and client names.

Alternatively, you can create a PDF using one of the following ways.

  • The most basic method: use Microsoft Word. Especially if you don’t mind a minimalistic design, you can just open up a new document and type your information in there. Then when you’re done, save it as a PDF. There are multiple free resume templates that work with Word that can make the process even easier.
  • A bit more advanced: use a design tool. Adobe InDesign in an industry-standard tool for creating publications and similar materials, so many people use it to design their resumes. Or you can choose a free alternative like Canva if you’re not comfortable with a professional software.
  • The easy but costly way: hire someone. If you have all the information written down but have neither the time nor the desire to do it yourself, you can always hire a designer to do it for you. It might cost a little bit, but you can save lots of time and end up with a CV that looks amazing.

It’s worth mentioning that even if you decide to write your resume as a page on your website, some people might still expect a button to download it as a PDF. Also, if you’re applying for a job and they ask for your copywriter resume as an attachment, they might not be happy to get a link instead.

How to write a copywriter cover letter

Although in most cases your resume-portfolio combo should do the job, for some positions they specifically ask for a cover letter as well. A copywriter cover letter is not much different from any others - except that they might expect it to be entertaining and fun to read.

There are some general rules you should follow to write a convincing copywriter cover letter:

  • Write a specific cover letter for each application

It goes without saying, but you should always tailor your cover letter to the job you’re applying for.

Start out by carefully reading the job description. What is their dream candidate like? Write a list of the keywords of skills and past experiences they’re looking for and reflect on them in your cover letter.

  • It should be about them, not you

That sounds a bit contradictory, considering we’re talking about cover letters, right? But if you think about it... Your cover letter is so much more powerful if you talk about how their company could benefit from having you and what they could achieve with your help.

If you’re just telling them how amazing you are in general, they might feel like you’re just trying to make yourself look good. But approaching it from their perspective, you’re creating a vision for them. And if it’s written well, you can really make an impact.

  • Let your motivation shine through

Of course, the whole point of the cover letter is to show them you want to work there. But sometimes it can still come out a little bland.

Do you have any personal connection to the company or their industry? Any anecdotes you can share? Include them so they see that for you it’s not “just another position”.

Convince them that being a skilled copywriter and an overall good fit is not the only reason why they should hire you. Show them that with you they will gain a determined and motivated employee that will fight for their vision with them.

  • Make sure your grammar is impeccable

Another thing you probably already know, but we’ll say it anyway. Make sure your grammar, spelling, and punctuation are perfect.

Making mistakes in these regards will tell hiring managers that it’s either your English skills or your attention to detail that’s lacking. Needless to say, for a copywriter position, either of these would be a reason for immediate rejection.

Attaching your copywriter portfolio

Your copywriter resume cannot exist without a portfolio. Sure, it nicely lists the companies you worked for and the schools you studied at.

But what about your skills in practice? Your writing style? The types of copy you’re best at? And the niches you write most comfortably in? Here’s where your portfolio comes into play.

When you’re applying for a copywriter job, they will expect you to hand in a portfolio alongside your resume. And if you’re not linking to it in your application email, they will be looking for it in your CV. It’s just as necessary, if not more important, than the resume itself.

As hiring managers have a limited time to look at your CV, they also don’t have hours to spend on your portfolio. But the difference is that while they look at your resume for about 10 seconds only, they can spend 5-10 minutes looking through your portfolio.

That says a lot about the importance and where you should focus your resources, right?

What makes a good portfolio?

  • Lots of visuals to catch your eye. While it’s more common for resumes to have a minimal black and white design, a good portfolio goes further than that. You should bring some color into the picture, if not with the design of the page, then with screenshots and big project thumbnails.
  • Brief explanations. While the centerpiece of the portfolio is the finished copy, it’s important to include information on how it came to be. Speaking about the challenge and your problem-solving process is crucial, but you have to do it briefly. Lack of time, remember?
  • Personality. Your portfolio is a great way for others to get to know you a little better. Through the projects you chose to display and how you decided to present them. With the copy you include and the about page you put together. It gives you a chance to show who’s behind all this amazing copy, so don’t miss out on it!
