భార‌తీయ తెర‌పై.. ఆర్మీ నేప‌థ్యం అన‌గానే స‌రిహ‌ద్దులు, త్యాగాలు, పోరాటాలు, దేశ‌భ‌క్తి వంటి విష‌యాలే గుర్తొస్తాయి. అందుకు భిన్నంగా రూపొందిన చిత్ర‌మే ‘కెప్టెన్‌’ (Captain). హాలీవుడ్ సినిమాల ప్ర‌భావం బ‌లంగా ఉన్న దర్శకుడు శ‌క్తి సౌంద‌ర్ రాజ‌న్‌.. మ‌రోసారి త‌న పంథాని కొన‌సాగిస్తూ ‘ప్రిడేట‌ర్‌’ స్ఫూర్తితో  ఈ సినిమాని రూపొందించారు. ఆర్య (Arya) క‌థానాయ‌కుడిగా న‌టించ‌డంతోపాటు, ఈ సినిమా నిర్మాణంలోనూ భాగం కావ‌డంతో మ‌రిన్ని అంచ‌నాలు నెల‌కొన్నాయి. తెలుగులో శ్రేష్ఠ్ మూవీస్ విడుద‌ల చేసిన ఈ సినిమా ఎలా ఉందో తెలుసుకునే ముందు క‌థేమిటో చూద్దాం... క‌థేంటంటే?

మూడు దేశాల స‌రిహ‌ద్దుల్లో ఉన్న ఓ అట‌వీ ప్రాంతం అది. భార‌తీయ సైన్యం ఆధీనంలో ఉన్న సెక్టార్ 42 జోన్ అంటే అంద‌రికీ హ‌డ‌ల్‌. లోప‌లికి వెళ్లిన ఆర్మీ బృందాలు అంతు చిక్క‌ని రీతిలో మృత్యువు పాల‌వుతుంటాయి. బృంద స‌భ్యుల్లోనే ఒక‌రు అంద‌రినీ అంతం చేసి,  ఆ త‌ర్వాత త‌న‌ని తాను కాల్చుకుని ఆత్మ‌హ‌త్య చేసుకుంటుంటాడు. దాని వెన‌క ర‌హ‌స్యాన్ని ఛేదించ‌డం కోసం కెప్టెన్  విజ‌య్ కుమార్ (ఆర్య‌)ని, అత‌ని బృందాన్ని ఆప‌రేష‌న్‌కి పంపుతారు అధికారులు. క్లిష్ట‌త‌ర‌మైన ఆ ఆప‌రేష‌న్‌కి వెళ్లిన విజ‌య్, అత‌ని బృందం తిరిగొచ్చిందా?  లేదా? ఇంత‌కీ అక్క‌డికి వెళ్లిన‌ వాళ్ల‌ని అంతం చేస్తున్న‌దెవ‌రనేది మిగ‌తా క‌థ‌.

ఎలా ఉందంటే?

హాలీవుడ్ సినిమాల్ని గుర్తు చేస్తూ ప్ర‌తిసారీ ఓ విభిన్న‌మైన కాన్సెప్ట్‌ని స్పృశిస్తున్న ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు శ‌క్తి సౌంద‌ర్ రాజ‌న్‌. జాంబీ, సైన్స్ ఫిక్ష‌న్ నేప‌థ్యంలో ఆయ‌న ఇదివ‌ర‌కు త‌మిళంలో తీసిన చిత్రాలు తెలుగులోనూ ప్రేక్ష‌కుల ముందుకొచ్చాయి. ఈసారి కూడా హాలీవుడ్‌లో వ‌చ్చిన  సినిమాల స్ఫూర్తితో ఓ వింత జీవి చుట్టూ అల్లిన క‌థ‌తో ‘కెప్టెన్‌’ని తెర‌కెక్కించారు. ప్ర‌ధానంగా ఈ సినిమాకి ‘ప్రిడేట‌ర్’ స్ఫూర్తి. అడ‌విలోకి ఎవ్వ‌రినీ రానివ్వ‌కుండా అడ్డుకుంటున్న ఓ ర‌హ‌స్య శ‌క్తిగా క‌నిపించే ఆ జీవి ఎలా పుట్టింది?  అది ఎవ‌రి నియంత్ర‌ణ‌లో ప‌నిచేస్తుంటుందనే విష‌యాలు ఆస‌క్తిక‌రం. శ‌త్రువు ఎవ‌రో తెలియ‌కుండానే మొద‌లయ్యే పోరాటమే ఈ క‌థ‌. కాన్సెప్ట్ వ‌ర‌కు ఆక‌ట్టుకున్నా.. దాన్ని ఆస‌క్తిక‌రంగా మ‌ల‌చ‌డంలో మాత్రం ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు విఫ‌ల‌మ‌య్యారు.

క‌థానాయ‌కుడు స‌హా ఏ పాత్ర‌లోనూ బ‌లం లేక‌పోవ‌డం సినిమాకి మైన‌స్‌గా మారింది. మ‌న‌సుల్ని క‌ట్టిప‌డేసేలా క‌థ‌ని మ‌ల‌చ‌లేక‌పోయారు. సంఘ‌ర్ష‌ణ, భావోద్వేగాలకి చోటే లేని రీతిలో క‌థ‌ని అల్లారు. వింత జీవితో సాగే పోరాటంలోనూ థ్రిల్లింగ్‌గా అనిపించ‌దు. వింత జీవి రూపం భ‌య‌పెట్టేలా ఉన్న‌ప్ప‌టికీ అవి నేరుగా మ‌నుషుల్ని అంతం చేయ‌క‌పోవ‌డంతో  హీరోకి, అత‌ని బృందానికి పెద్ద‌గా స‌వాళ్లు ఎదురు కావు. త‌న బృందంలోని స‌భ్యుడిపై ప‌డిన మ‌చ్చ తొలగించ‌డం కోసం హీరో చేసే ప్ర‌య‌త్నాలు,  హీరోపై మ‌న‌సుప‌డ్డ అమ్మాయి  క‌థ‌... ప‌ర్వాలేద‌నిపిస్తాయంతే. చివ‌ర్లో కొన్ని మ‌లుపులు ఉన్న‌ప్ప‌టికీ అవి ప్రేక్ష‌కుల‌పై పెద్ద‌గా ప్ర‌భావం చూపించ‌వు. ఏ ద‌శ‌లోనూ సినిమా ఆస‌క్తిని రేకెత్తించ‌కుండా స్త‌బ్దుగా ముగిసిన‌ట్టు అనిపిస్తుంది. 

ఎవ‌రెలా చేశారంటే?

బ‌ల‌మైన పాత్ర‌ల్లో క‌నిపిస్తూ త‌న‌దైన ప్ర‌భావం చూపించే ఆర్యకి ఇందులో న‌టించేందుకు పెద్ద‌గా ఆస్కారం ల‌భించలేదు. సినిమా మొత్తం గ‌న్ ప‌ట్టుకుని అలా క‌నిపిస్తారంతే. ఐశ్వ‌ర్య ల‌క్ష్మి, కావ్య‌శెట్టి ఇద్ద‌రు హీరోయిన్లు ఉన్నా వాళ్ల పాత్ర‌ల్లో బ‌లం లేదు. సీనియ‌ర్ న‌టి సిమ్ర‌న్ కీల‌క‌మైన పాత్ర‌లో క‌నిపిస్తుంది.  ఆమె పాత్ర నేప‌థ్యం ఆక‌ట్టుకునేలా ఉన్న‌ప్ప‌టికీ దానిపై కూడా పైపైనే క‌స‌ర‌త్తులు చేశారు ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు. దాంతో ఓ మంచి పాత్ర నీరుగారిపోయిన‌ట్టైంది.  సాంకేతికంగా సినిమా ఫర్వాలేద‌నిపిస్తుంది. ఇమ్మాన్‌ సంగీతం,యువ.. కెమెరా ప‌నిత‌నం మెప్పిస్తుంది. క‌థ‌, క‌థ‌నాల ప‌రంగా తేలిపోయారు ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు. విజువ‌ల్ ఎఫెక్ట్స్‌కి ప్రాధాన్యం ఉన్న ఈ సినిమా నిర్మాణంలో అక్క‌డ‌క్క‌డా లోపాలు క‌నిపిస్తాయి.

What's Behind

Arya is known for his macho looks and different entertainers. His film Captain directed by Shakti Soudarrajan is releasing on September 8, 2022. Let us find out how it fared at the box office.

Story Review

Captain movie is all about how an army person takes fights an external creature. Captain Vijay Kumar (Arya) who implements the tactics of the Army to eliminate the enemy following (Identity, Fight, Weakness, Deceive, Sacrifice) fails in his mission at Sector 42 in the North East Region. He was demoted from combat to training after the mission resulted in the loss of his friend Karthik ( (Harish Uthaman). However, he gets a second chance when doctor Keerthi (Simran) gets him back to on the mission at Sector 42 using her influence with Defence Minister Rajiv Chakravarthy. To find out what is the Sector 42 mission, how Army General Raja (Aditya Menon) is connected to the secret and mysterious happenings, watch Captain movie on the screen.

Captain movie is inspired by many Hollywood films. Director Shakti Soundarrajan tried to thrill movie lovers by showing an army man fighting an invisible creature. He drew inspiration from Hollywood film Predator which thrilled movie lovers in the 80s and also films like Ram Gopal Varma's Agyaat. Though the idea excites all, to emerge successful, one needs a lot of twists and turns to thrill the viewers. However right from the start till the finish, the story of Captain offered none of them.

The film turned out to be a tedious watch as Shakthi Soundarajan failed with his story, screenplay, and direction.  He came up with a weak script and from then on it has been a complete freefall. The film missed many logics and to the top of it, missed the emotions. Nothing in the narration excites all and people are clueless as to what's going on. A look at the screen, one gets a feeling that even the actors are clueless and they just passed through the motions not knowing what to do in front of the camera. The climax turned out to be even more silly and ridiculous.

Arya is known for his terrific performances but one wonders what made him sign this film and chose this role with excitement. The film and role offered nothing for him and Arya failed with his expressions. Even he failed to show basic emotions and it seems he was at a loss of words and actions. Aishwarya Lekshmi got a limited role and Simran is just ok. Others like Raj Bharath,Gokulnath,Thiagarajan,Malavika Avinash,Aditya Menon couldn't do anything.

When the director himself failed completely come up with a lousy script and the story, it will be difficult for the technical team to up the tempo. Everything fell apart and the first to talk about is the so-called VFX and the creature. The so-called alien creature looked like a caricature and the VFX looked worse than below par. They are so substandard that even soap operas could have come up with better CGI and VFX. Music and songs turned out to be speed breakers and D.Imman's background score did not make any impact. Cinematography and editing are below standards. Production values are bad.

When Shakti Soundarrajan narrated Captain's plot to Arya, he must have got excited thinking of Hollywood blockbuster Predator. But never did he realize that Shakti Soundarrajan turned out to be his predator and eat up all the accolades he got with Sarpatta. The film turned out to be an insult to the Predator and it is better the makers stop talking about the film. The film lacked a basic plot and it tests the patience of the viewers with no real twists and turns. Shakti Soundrarajan failed on all fronts. C inejosh goes with a 1 rating for Captain movie .

ఓ వింత జీవితో పోరాటం చేయడమే కెప్టెన్  సినిమా  కథ. ఇక కెప్టెన్, అతని బృందం ఆ వింత జీవితో ఎందుకు పోరాటం చేయాల్సి వచ్చింది? ఆ వింత జీవి వల్ల మానవాళికి ఎలాంటి ప్రమాదం ఉంది అనేదే ఈ  సినిమా  కథ.

ఈ చిత్రం  ఫస్ట్ లుక్ పోస్టర్ చూసిన  తర్వాత  హాలీవుడ్ చిత్రాలు పరిచయం ఉన్న అందరికీ వచ్చిన ఒకే ఒక ఆలోచన 'ప్రెడేటర్'లా ఉందని.  అయితే హీరో ఆర్య ..అబ్బే ఇది ఆ కథ కాదు. ఇది వేరే కథ. ఒక వింత జీవి ఉంది. థియేటర్లలో ప్రేక్షకులకు మంచి ఎక్స్‌పీరియ‌న్స్ ఇస్తుంది అన్నారు. నిజంగానే ఈ సినిమా కొత్త ఎక్సపీరియన్స్ ఇస్తుందా...అసలు ఈ సినిమా కథేంటి...వర్కవుట్ అయ్యే కాన్సెప్ట్ యేనా వంటి విషయాలు రివ్యూలో చూద్దాం..

కథాంశం ఇండియన్ ఆర్మీ ఆఫీసర్ రోల్ కెప్టెన్ విజయ్ కుమార్(ఆర్య) ఆధ్వర్యంలో ఓ స్పెషల్ టీమ్ రన్ ప్రత్యేకమైన ప్రాజెక్టులు చేపడుతూంటుంది.  తన దగ్గర ఉన్న సూపర్ ట్రైనింగ్ బ్యాచ్ తో ఎలాంటి శత్రు సంభంద సమస్యలు అయినా పరిష్కరించగలగుతారు. దూకుడుగా ముందుకు వెళ్లగలుగుతాడు. ఈ సారి అతను ఓ డేంజరస్ ఆపరేషన్ చేపడతాడు.  చాలా  సంవత్సరాలగా పౌర కార్యకలాపాలు లేదా సైనిక కార్యకలాపాలు లేని భారతదేశంలోని ఈశాన్య అటవీ ప్రాంతం వెనక ఉన్న సీక్రెట్ ని ఛేధించాలని ప్రభుత్వం నిర్ణయించుకుంటుంది. అక్కడకి వెళ్లినవారు తిరిగిరావటం లేదు.  దాంతో ఆ  మిస్టరీని తెలుసుకోవడానికి కెప్టెన్ విజయ్ కుమార్ నేతృత్వంలోని బృందాన్ని అక్కడికి చేరుకోవడానికి సిద్ధం చేస్తుంది. అది చాలా  దుర్బేద్యమైన ప్రాంతం. ప్రతీ సారి తన సాహసాలతో సమయస్పూర్తితో చాలా ఈజీగా  డీల్ చేసే విజయ్ కుమార్ కు అక్కడ పరిస్దితులు ఓ పట్టాన లొంగవు. అక్కడ ఉన్నది మానవులు కాదని  వింత జీవులు అని తెలుసుకున్న  అతను వాటిని ప్రాణాలను పణంగా పెట్టి మరీ  ఎలా ఎదుర్కొన్నాడు. ఆ క్రమంలో అతను సక్సెస్ అయ్యాడా... అసలు ఈ వింత జీవులు ఎవరు...వారి  వెనక ఉన్నవారు ఎవరు...ఇవన్నీ తెలుసుకోవాలంటే సినిమా చూడాల్సిందే.  

రొటీన్ కు భిన్నమైన కాన్సెప్ట్ లు, అదిరిపోయే ట్విస్ట్ లు, ఒళ్లుగగుర్పొడిచే సీన్స్, విజువల్ ఎఫెక్ట్స్  చూడాలంటే కేవలం హాలీవుడ్ సినిమాలు తప్ప మనకు వేరే దారిలేదా అని ఫీలయ్యే పరిస్దితి మెల్లిగా మారుతోంది. అయితే, క్రమంగా  మన వాళ్లూ కొత్త  కాన్సెప్ట్ లతో తెరకెక్కిస్తున్న సినిమాలు ఈ మధ్య మన ముందు వస్తూనే ఉన్నాయి. ప్రేక్షకుల టేస్ట్ కు తగ్గట్లు ఫిల్మ్ మేకర్లు కూడా… అవుట్ ఆఫ్ ది బాక్స్ ఐడియాస్ తో ఆకట్టుకునే ప్రయత్నం చేస్తున్నారు. ఈ క్రమంలో విభిన్నమైన కాన్సెప్ట్ తో ప్రేక్షకుల ముందుకు వచ్చిన చిత్రం ఇది. అయితే ఈ సినిమాలో కాన్సెప్టు కు తగ్గ కథ,కథనం లేకపోవటం నిరాశపరుస్తుంది.అలాగే సినిమా వంద శాతం  'ప్రెడేటర్' నుంచి తీసుకున్న ఆలోచనే.   

ఈ సినిమాలో ఏమన్నా చెప్పుకోవాలి అంటే  వీఎఫ్ఎక్స్ వర్క్స్ గురించి మాట్లాడాలి. మొదటే చెప్పుకున్నట్లు ఇటువంటి సినిమాలు హాలీవుడ్‌లో వచ్చాయి. అవన్నీ దాదాపు ఇక్కడా డబ్బింగ్ అవుతూ వచ్చాయి. కాబట్టి మనవాళ్లకీ ఇలాంటి సినిమాలు పరిచయమే.అయితే అదే సమయంలో  మన వీఎఫ్ఎక్స్ వ‌ర్క్‌ను అక్కడి సినిమాలతో పోలుస్తూంటారు. మనకి బడ్జెట్ లేదు కాబట్టి ఆ స్థాయిలో చేయలేకపోయామని నిర్మాతలు చెప్తూంటారు. కాబట్టి ఆ విషయంలో మాగ్జిమం  చాలా ప్రీ ప్రొడక్షన్ వర్క్ చేసి ఆ సమస్యను అధిగమించే ప్రయత్నం చేస్తూంటారు. 

దానికి తోడు ఇప్పుడు మన ఇండియాలో కూడా మంచి టెక్నీషియన్లు ఉన్నారు. వాళ్ళు చాలా బాగా చేస్తున్నారు. అయితే ఈ సినిమాకు అంతగొప్పగా కుదరలేదనే చెప్పాలి. VFX విషయానికి వస్తే ఆడియన్స్ చాలా మెచ్యూర్ గా ఉన్నారు. తొంభైల నాటి VFXలుగా పూర్ గా ఉంటే మొహమాటం లేకుండా తిరస్కరిస్తున్నారు. VFX కు చెందిన ప్రతీ షాట్ బాగా దారుణంగా , కథకు  కీలకమైన క్రీచర్ ని సరిగ్గా చూపలేక, వాటితో వచ్చై ఫైట్స్ ని సరిగ్గా ప్రెజెంట్ చేయలేక చతికిలపడ్డాయి.  

దానికి తోడు డైరక్టర్ తన దృష్టిని కథ మీద కాకుండా కేవలం మిగతా విషయాలమీద పెట్టినట్లున్నారు. ఎందుకంటే సృష్టిలో లేని క్రీచర్ ని క్రియేట్ చేయాలి. దానికి కష్టపడ్డారు. ఏ మేరకు సక్సెస్ అయ్యారనేది ప్రక్కన పెడితే. దాంతో సినిమాలో మినిమం ఉండాల్సిన స్టోరీ లైన్..అందుకు తగ్గ విస్తరణ, స్క్రీన్ ప్లే ఏదీ జరగలేదు.  రొటీన్ సీన్స్ ఎక్కువ శాతం ఆక్రమించాయి. జోరో ఎక్సైట్మెంట్. సైన్స్ ఫిక్షన్ కదా ఎవరు పట్టించుకుంటారు అనుకున్నారో ఏమో కానీ లాజిక్స్ వదిలేసారు. డిఫరెంట్ ఎటెమ్టే ...కానీ వర్కవుట్ కాలేదు.   

టెక్నికల్ గా...

 తమిళంలో విజయవంతంమైన “టెడ్డి” తీసిన దర్శకుడే దానికి ముందు “టిక్ టిక్ టిక్” అనే సినిమా తీశారు. ఆ రెండింటిలోనూ వర్కవుట్ అయిన అంశాలే ఇక్కడ మిస్సయ్యాయి.  దర్శకుడు శక్తి సుందర్ రాజన్  సిననిమాలు కథ, స్క్రీన్ ప్లే విషయంలో తడబడుతున్నాయి. ఈ సారి అది మరికాస్త ఎక్కువైంది. అతనివి విభిన్నమైన మంచి కాన్సప్టులే. కానీ స్టోరీ నేరేషన్ వైజ్ గా చూస్తే నిరాశపరుస్తున్నాయు. టిక్ టాక్ చిత్రం విఫ్ఎక్స్ తో వర్కవుట్ అయ్యింది. కానీ కెప్టెన్ ఆ విషయం పూర్తిగా నిరాశపరిచింది. ఆడియో పరంగా విజువల్స్ పరంగా ఈ చిత్రం ఊహించని మేరకు గొప్ప ఎక్స్ పీరియెన్స్ ఇవ్వలేకపోయింది. ఇమామ్ మ్యూజిక్ బాగుంది. కెమెరా వర్క్ కూడా నీట్ గా బాగుంది. ప్రొడక్షన్ వాల్యూస్ ఇలాంటి కథలకు తగ్గట్లు లేవు.

నటీనటుల్లో ...ఆర్య కష్టం బాగా కనపడుతుంది. సినిమాల్లో  చూపించిన జీవి ఆర్టిస్ట్ ల  ముందు ఉండదు. కానీ, చాలా దూరం నుంచి లేని ఆ జంతువును ఊహించుకొని చెయ్యాల్సి ఉంటుంది. చాలా సీన్స్ లో ఆర్య ఫిజికల్ గా కూడా చాలా సీన్స్ లో కష్టపడాల్సి వచ్చింది. కానీ ఆ కష్టానికి స్క్రిప్టు కూడా సహకరించి ఉంటే బాగుండేది. ఐశ్వర్య  రోల్ ఓకే. ఆర్యతో కెమిస్ట్రీ బాగుంది. తక్కువ సీన్స్ లో కనిపించినా సిమ్రాన్ మన ఎటెన్షన్ గ్రాబ్ చేస్తుంది.

Captain Movie Review: Arya's film is poor man's Predator

Director shakti soundar rajan's captain, starring arya, simran and aishwarya lekshmi, is an illogical-man-vs-creature film. this is a poor adaptation of hollywood films of the same genre with extra masala. read our review..

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 1987 film Predator is an iconic flick that still holds a special place in the hearts of cinephiles. Three decades later, director Shakti Soundar Rajan decided to Indian-ise the concept and deliver it as Captain. Throw in an unnecessary love angle and some other sentiments, and you get Captain. Voila!

Captain begins with an elaborate introduction of Army captain Vetri Selvan (Arya), who is an orphan. He says his team is his family and would go to any lengths to protect them. Though Vetri heads a team of military men and a woman, his actions during a mission are so slow that you wish to scream at the screen asking him to be a little quick. He is entrusted with the job of going into a restricted forest area, Sector 42, where people have died inexplicably. When he and his team venture into the forest, his friend Karthi Devan (Harish Uthaman) tries to shoot at him and his team, but eventually, shoots himself.

Enter scientist Dr Keerthi (Simran), who knows a little more about the forest than the military men. She says that the creature, which they call Minotaur, should be eliminated to begin the civilian movement on the site. Keerthi and Vetri, along with his team, now draft a plan to find the Minotaur, its history and the ideal way to defeat the creature(s).

Over the years, movie-goers have developed a habit of expecting something new from Shakti Soundar Rajan. All his films would be pegged as the ‘first Tamil cinema' to do this or that. With Captain, he has attempted the man vs creature concept. However ambitious Indian-ising the genre may sound, you need the budget to pull off this VFX-heavy concept. And that’s where Captain fails miserably.

The plot of Captain is wafer-thin and stuff that you have seen in age-old Tamil films and soap operas. Secondly, the VFX is shoddy and doesn’t give you the intended feel it was supposed. Thirdly, there are major logical loopholes that mess up the entire experience. For example, just a few minutes before the interval, Dr Keerthi, Vetri and his team are surrounded by so many Minotaurs and we are expecting a full-blown battle. But, as the second half begins, the team is back at the lab at the military base camp. Guess the Minotaurs decided to leave them unharmed so the film could go on for another 45 minutes.

After an impressive performance in Pa Ranjith’s Sarpatta Parambarai, it is excruciating to see Arya in this film. He holds one expression throughout the film and makes us think whether he’s a cardboard cut-out. Simran, who plays a grey-shaded character, delivers an underwhelming performance. A scene where people take a dig at her affair with her investor makes you squirm in your seats. It’s 2022, people!

Oh, there’s also Aishwarya Lekshmi in the film. The supporting characters played by Harish Uthaman, Kavya Shetty, Bharath Raj and Gokul are middling.

Captain sees Vetri and Keerthi get a breakthrough in finding the Minotaur’s head. While you expect the same creature, the director surprises you by showing a giant Octopus. Ummm, aren’t they different creatures?

Captain is an underwritten film which needed much more substance and attention to detail to capture the audience.

Captain - Gives 'Predator' the juvenile treatment

Shakti Soundar Rajan has made a career of delivering rehashes of Hollywood blockbusters tagging them as India's first.  So far he has "introduced" the zombie, the space and a live teddy to Tamil cinema with varying degrees of success apart from an impressive canine thriller and an all style no substance bank heist on debut.  For 'Captain' he has trained his guns predominantly on the 'Predator' but has also shot down the 'Species' and the 'Loch Ness' in the process.  Whether his latest attempt will appeal to the OTT hooked generation remains to be seen.

Captain Vetriselvan (Arya) is an orphan who wears patriotism on his shirt, considers the army his world and those under his charge his family.  The army is flummoxed as a team of soldiers who go inside "Section 42" a forest zone that no human has entered end up dying mysteriously.   Evidence points to one of the officers going mad and finishing off his colleagues.  Enter Arya and his team who encounter a force beyond human capabilities and in the process lose his close friend Karthik (Harish Uttaman).  The powers that be pin the debacle on the deceased Karthik but Vetriselvan vows to clear his name.  Who or what is that extraterrestrial force, what is the connection between that and a mysterious scientist (Simran) and whether the hero vanquishes his powerful enemy and clear his friends name or not is what Captain is all about.

Arya after the critically acclaimed 'Sarpatta Parambarai' has fallen prey to two underwhelming appearances in 'Aranmanai 3' and 'Enemy' and sadly one should say that this is a dubious hattrick for him.  His character is so one dimensional that he can do nothing to rise above it.  Simran's scientist probably fashioned on Charlize Theron's Cypher has nothing to play and is as clueless as the others.  The less said about Aishwarya Lekshmi who plays the cliched love interest the better.  Ambuli Gokulnath impresses as the technology expert while Harish Uttaman also manages to escape unscathed.

What works best in 'Captain' is the montage that depicts the art of war's five rules that promises something great but flatters to deceive.  The core idea of a captain going against all odds to clear the name of his teammate keeps the interest for sometime in the first half. The sets of the alien lab and the military base give the ambience.  The spider creature and the idea of it being a signal transmitter grabs attention.

On the flip side the interest created in the opening is dampened by the cliched comradery song and the love track.  Though the alien VFX is a let down it could have been forgiven if some effort had been put in to its characteristics and intelligence.   The main villain the afore mentioned cross between the Species and Loch Ness is hardly shown to create any impact on the audience.  The queen alien sure would have preferred suicide than be killed the 'Captain' way.

D.Imman's music is as perfunctory as the demand of the script while by modern standards the other technicalities are on par.  Arya has also backed the project under his banner The Show People and Think Studios.  Shakti Soundar Rajan is as usual ambitious and his efforts in bringing his vision to screen with the available resources are appreciable.  If only there was a semblance of a screenplay in the proceedings it may have well turned out to be a captain's knock.

Verdict : Go for it if you are a fan of Shakti Soundar Rajan

Captain movie review: Arya’s low-budget monster film bites more than it can chew

Captain is not as excruciating as director shakti soundar rajan’s previous ventures like miruthan or tik tik tik, but those are just poor yardsticks to measure films..

One can’t help but feel jealous of Shakti Soundar Rajan . I mean who else would get to make an uninspiring film in a new genre year after year? The director seems to revel in the idea of introducing a new genre to Tamil cinema fans. His sophomore project Naaigal Jaakirathai was touted to be the first Tamil film to feature a dog as the protagonist. Later, Miruthan was marketed as the first Tamil Zombie film, then came Tik Tik Tik, the first Tamil space film. Now, Captain , starring Arya, is brandished as the first Tamil creature film (which is debatable). Other than being sold as the ‘first’ of something, Rajan’s films share similar traits like rehashed plots, ineffective emotional beats, cardboard characters and predictable plots. Yet, at some level, these factors seem to be working for his films because nothing else explains the consistency of the director’s career. I would like to call the experience the pleasure of predictability, and Captain provides just that.

Vetri Selvan (Arya), an Army Captain, heads a team of five. An orphan, Vetri only has his team for a family. The team, which specialises in dealing with terrorist operations, is uncharacteristically tasked to scout an area named Sector 42, which touches the borders of China and Nepal. A previous attempt to scout the area resulted in casualties due to unknown reasons. The premise, with no room for doubts, is similar to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Predator (1987). Yet, what begins as an alien-invasion thriller takes a quick turn and becomes an eco-activist film. Maybe, that’s the only thing the viewer doesn’t see coming. But, the apparent twist was more silly and contrived than surprising.

There is nothing at stake in Captain. At least had Shakti followed the exact patterns of typical monster/creature films, Captain would have invoked a sense of empathy for the characters. There is not even a cursory scene that establishes the camaraderie of the team. Instead, it is all being told to us. The expositions are on the face. In one instance, Vetri realises that he is immune to the venom of the creature, which is pretty apparent from the visuals. However, Shakti’s regard for audience intelligence is negligible and he finds it necessary to convey the same as a dialogue.

There’s a huge fanbase for Asian creature films, but Captain doesn’t provide the thrill or invoke the disgust of such B-films. The visual effects were shockingly shoddy to make us fear the creatures. Also, they don’t go for the kill instantly, which removes a sense of immediate threat. Yet, one can see some thought has gone into creating the monsters and their biology. Shakti has ideas, but they don’t come through effectively in this low-budget monster film that bites more than it can chew.

Movie Verdict

Hollywood’s Alien films are certainly no secret to anyone, and the youth of the 1990s loved Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “Predator.” If you enjoyed Predator, you’ll likely enjoy The Captain because it is similar to that film in many respects. However, drawing in the public’s interest through the utilization of cutting-edge subject matter does not ensure commercial success at the box office. Due to its tedious premise, the picture falls short of producing the same amount of excitement as other alien movies and instead makes us feel bored.

Arya did a good job portraying Captain Vijay Kumar, and his performance was faultless. To enable this performer to deliver more captivating performance, the character design should have been enhanced. Aishwarya Lekshmi performs admirably in the part she was given. Simran had little on-screen time, yet she left a lasting impression. With the tasks they were given, everyone else in the movie performed a good job.

On paper, “Captain” appears to be a good movie. The music, composed by D Imman, perfectly captures the mood and tone of the film. There are a few outstanding sequences among Yuva’s poorer-than-average strokes. The battle scenes in the movie are beautifully shot and produced.

The director, Shakti Soundar Rajan, is renowned for inventing genres that aren’t frequently seen in Indian movies. The problem is that he wants to make experimental films but only has a limited budget. The film may lose some viewers owing to the glaring concessions it makes because the styles it uses have hefty production costs. Although the technical team put forth a lot of effort, budget restrictions make the VFX in this movie more cartoonish than realistic.

The captain is a first for the Telugu and Tamil film industries in general. It is advised that you see this movie only if you’re open to giving it another chance.

Captain Movie Review

Director Shakti Soundar Rajan who has built a reputation in doling out science fiction dramas has added yet another science fiction title to his name in Captain. The drama is based on the popular novel Predator penned by writer McTiernan. The drama is about the mission of a daring army captain who puts his life on line to uncover the truth behind the mysterious death of a military unit inside a dense forest. Actor Arya who was last seen on screens in the action crime thriller drama Enemy is back on screens with his science fiction action film Captain . Actress Aishwarya Lekshmi has essayed the female lead role in the movie. So, how has the science fiction action movie Captain come out? Is it solid enough to propel actor Arya to the success zone, and establish actress Aishwarya Lekshmi as a bankable female lead in Tamil cinema? To know that let us get into the movie review.

Captain depicts events that occur in a dense forest. Vetri Selvan (Arya), an orphan who is fostered by the army grows up to be an army captain. To him his team is his family. As a unit they share a close bond, and have a reputation for accomplishing dangerous and complex covert military operations. Their next mission is to enter a mysterious forest region termed Sector 42, to get a read on what is going on in the area. A unit which was previously sent on the operation has never returned. Vetri Selvan, and his team embark on the mission. Inside the area they are ambushed by a mysterious creature, which leads to the death of one of his teammates. Vetri Selvan is demoted as a training officer for the mishap in the mission. Meanwhile, Dr Keerthi (Simran), a scientist with the defense ministry set up a lab adjacent to Sector 42 to study about the beastly creature under project Minotaur. 

As Vetri Selvan and his team were the one to have lastly visited Sector 42, they are added to the squad. The team again raided Sector 42. They are attacked. But Vetri Selvan somehow manages to hurt one of the creatures, and brings it to the lab. However, the creature regains consciousness, and wreaks havoc on the lab. It is then known that these creatures do not have a body temperature, are venomous, and communicate by means of bio radio signals. Soon they infer that a huge Minotaur is out there, and is sending signals to the little Minotaurs. Vetri senses there is more than what meets the eye behind project Minotaur. He tells his team they should kill the huge Minotaur on their own without Keerthi. What is happening in Sector 42, does Keerthi have a game as Vetri suspects, and will the team succeed on their mission to kill Minotaurs, is what makes the rest of the flick. 

Captain has raw ideas lifted from Hollywood movies but lacks a proper writer to crack and develop those ideas into a gripping narration. Director Shakti Soundar Rajan opens Captain in a typical Tamil cinema-esque fashion. He introduces his lead character amid a military operation, in an attempt to spin a clever and formidable shade to the character. But neither his writing, nor Arya’s acting, nor cinematographer Yuva’s frames have anything special in them to support his cause. Then, swiftly, before we could get into the mood of a military zone, the scene cuts to a happy celebratory song. It again switches back to a serious tone. A good 20 twenty minutes into the film, we still could not resonate with any of the characters or take their mission seriously. Resounding similitude is to blame. 

Captain is easily the worst film of director Shakti Soundar Rajan. His latest work is dearth of even the effort we could find in his previous films. It looks as if the crew stepped on to execution without clear groundwork, and halfway through has lost confidence, indulged in a rush job to just complete the shoot, and be done with it. When we are yet to finish lamenting the pitfalls in the story and acting, parallelly the technical facade of the film says ‘hold my beer’. The VFX of Captain might have gotten a pass in Tamil cinema one or two decades ago. At present, its mediocrity is intolerable. To be fair, budget constraints do seem to have played spoilsport. But then, even with sufficient budget, Captain still would have failed on many fronts. 

Actor Arya’s physique helped him to fit well in his role. But the actor is far from his best as a performer. For most parts he comes across straight faced. Actress Aishwarya Lekshmi’s character does not have much to move the proceedings. Nonetheless, she lives up to her part. Veteran actress Simran tries hard to make her presence felt even in an abysmally written role. Actress Kavya Shetty does justice to her part. Actor Harish Uthaman makes an impact in his stereotypical role. Actor Suresh Chandra Menon serves the purpose for which he was brought on board. Actor Bharath Raj is operational. Actress Malavika Avinash is adequate. Actor Gokulnath is functional. Actors Vincent Asokan, Adithya Menon, Rajmohan, and Gokul Anand have done their job well. The rest of the cast has delivered what was asked of them. 

On the technical front, music director D Imman’s songs are average, and do not stay in our memory for long. His background score is not any special either. Even in jump scare portions he just deploys the archetypal blaring score. Cinematographer S Yuva’s frames are adequate . But for a science fiction film his angles and color tone should have been better. Editor Pradeep E Ragav has tried his best to work his scissors in ways to improve the work of his colleague.  

On the whole, shoestring budget married to half-hearted work mar director Shakti Soundar Rajan’s mission to give a gripping film in Captain.

Captain movie: What is the film about? 

In Captain, Arya plays the role of Vetri Selvan, who heads a team of soldiers. For a task, Vetri and his team are asked to go into a restricted forest area, Sector 42, where certain inexplicable deaths have occurred. A scientist who knows a little more about Sector 42 than the military outfit tells them about the creature called Minotaur who must be killed for safe civilian movement in the area. Vetri and his team must know about the history of Minotaur and find out a way to eliminate the alien threat all while fending for their own lives. 

Captain Twitter review and reactions 

Captain's plot may sound a bit like the aforementioned creature flicks, but as per the first reviews on social media, the Telugu movie has not been able to match up to the treatment such a subject deserved, especially the VFX job on Minotaur. Viewers said that the CGI work is shoddy and Captain makers have made no effort in designing Minotaur to perfection despite knowing it is a major element in the movie. Others pointed out that the film is slow-paced and the acting too is a big letdown. Going by the first reviews of Captain, it would not be unfair to call it a 'wasted opportunity'. However, lead star Arya's performance has been termed a positive for the film.

Captain Movie Review : Arya is well known to Telugu audience with few of his appearances in Telugu movies and few other Telugu dubbed movies of himself that worked out here. His recent OTT film ‘Sarpatta Parambarai’ was also dubbed in Telugu and received good response from the audience. Movie Verdict

Many people might have seen the Alien movies from Hollywood, especially ‘Predator’ starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, which was one of the favorite movies for 1990’s kids. Captain is movie similar to Predator and we should appreciate the makers for choosing such subject to make it as a film in Indian cinema. But choosing new content doesn’t make a film work at the box-office, despite grabbing the attention of audience. This movie lacks excitement that was created in many of alien movies and makes us feel bored with very routine scenes to watch on screen.

While it comes to acting, Arya was very good in the role of captain Vijay Kumar and there is nothing wrong with his performance, but the character design could have been better, that could have helped this actor to perform more. Aishwarya Lekshmi is okay in the role offered to her. Simran is impressive, though appeared in very few scenes. All other actors did their part well as required for the movie.

Technically Captain movie looks okay. Music composed by D Imman is apt for the situations on screen and it creates the mood required to watch this movie. Cinematography by Yuva is just okay, few shots in the film look good but overall shots are not up to the mark. Fights are very well composed in the movie.

Dirtector Shakti Soundar Rajan always comes up with the genres that are very rare in Indian cinema history. He tries to make films with new genres on limited budget and that’s where problem arises. As the genres he choose need good budget for quality output, we can seen many compromises in the movie, that might disturb the interest of audience. VFX of this movie looks more like an animation, though technical team have worked hard, due to budget restrictions.

Overall, Captain is a new genre film in Telugu and Tamil. This movie can be watched only for the new attempt.

Star actor Dhanush and director Arun Matheswaran collaborated for Captain Miller, the first part of a three-part action-adventure film. Initially released in Tamil during Sankranthi, the film has hit big screens today in Telugu. Check out our review to know how it is.

Set in the pre-Independence era, Agneeswara (Dhanush) belongs to a lower caste in a village. He joins the British Army just to earn respect. However, he regrets fighting his own people and leaves the army after killing the General. Later, he joins a revolutionary group and fights the British Army, which takes away the 600-year-old precious idol from his village. Did Captain Miller retrieve it? What made Agneeswara kill the British General? Who is Bhanumathi (Priyanka Arul Mohan), and how is she connected to the story? What transformed Agneeswara into Captain Miller? The movie will unfold the answers.

Plus Points:

Dhanush, a recipient of the National Award, once again immerses himself in his character, delivering a polished performance with effective emotional expressions, especially in action sequences.

Kannada star Shiva Rajkumar and Tollywood actor Sundeep Kishan shine in their respective roles, showcasing brilliance despite the limited screen time.

The well-crafted action sequences, particularly during the interval and climax, captivate the audience, and the music significantly contributes to the overall experience.

Minus Points:

Director Arun Matheswaran relies on a non-linear screenplay, narrating the story across six chapters. While this narrative structure is not confusing, there’s potential for a more captivating and dynamic first half.

Certain characters, like Priyanka Arul Mohan and Jayaprakash, add minimal value to the film. A missed opportunity for Priyanka Mohan to showcase her performance in a few scenes is evident.

The movie maintains a serious tone throughout, lacking the inclusion of other emotions like romance and comedy, limiting its appeal to a dedicated audience.

Scenes related to Tamil nativity may not resonate with Telugu audiences. Also, the Telugu subtitles contain numerous grammatical and translation mistakes, which is unexpected in a movie of this scale.

Technical Aspects:

Arun Matheswaran, in his roles as a writer and director, leaves an okay impression. A more engaging first half and a gripping narrative could enhance the film’s overall impact.

The musical score by GV Prakash Kumar stands out, complemented by Siddhartha Nuni’s decent cinematography. While the editing is generally satisfactory, trimming a few unnecessary scenes could improve the viewing experience. The film maintains decent production values.

On the whole, Captain Miller has its moments. Dhanush’s commendable performance, the well-executed action sequences, and GV Prakash Kumar’s musical prowess are notable positives. However, the film is hindered by a slow-paced first half, redundant scenes, a consistently serious tone, and a lack of emotional depth. If you appreciate serious-toned action dramas, Captain Miller might be worth considering; otherwise, alternative entertainment options may be more suitable.

Captain Movie Review : Because of his roles in Telugu movies and his success with Telugu-dubbed movies in which he plays himself, Arya is very well known among Telugu speakers due to the fact that he has appeared in Telugu movies. The Telugu rendition of Sarpatta Parambarai that appeared in his most recent OTT film was well received by the audience. His most recent film, “Captain,” which was originally made in Tamil, has just been released in Telugu. Nithin’s home label, Sreshth Movies, was the one responsible for releasing the film in Telugu. Movie Verdict

It is not a secret that Hollywood produces films based on aliens, and in the 1990s, the movie “Predator” starring Arnold Schwarzenegger was a major hit with children. Because of the many similarities between the two films, it is likely that you will enjoy The Captain as well as you enjoyed Predator. There is no guarantee that a movie will be successful at the box office simply because it tackles a topic that is fresh and engaging simply because of this. The movie’s uninteresting premise, which in turn makes us feel uninteresting, is one of the reasons why it isn’t as fascinating as previous films about aliens.

Arya gave an outstanding performance as Captain Vijay Kumar, and his acting was spot on throughout the whole thing. If the actor’s characters had been designed more effectively, we might have been able to expect a more engaging performance from them. In the part that was allotted to her, Aishwarya Lekshmi delivers an outstanding performance. Even though Simran appeared on film for a little period, she managed to leave an indelible mark. Everyone else in the film performed a fantastic job with what they were expected to do in their roles in the movie.

On paper, the movie “Captain” looks like it would be a lot of fun to watch in theatres. D The score by Imman does an excellent job of establishing the sentiment and atmosphere of the film. There are a few strokes that really stand out, even among Yuva’s otherwise ordinary play. The movie features some intense battle sequences that are expertly shot and staged.

Shakti Soundar Rajan is well-known for pioneering several film genres that are seldom utilized in Indian motion pictures. The challenge for him is that he wants to create experimental films but only has a limited budget to work with. Because the picture accommodates the viewers’ preferences, which come with a hefty production price tag for the styles he employs, the movie might not appeal to all of its potential viewers. The budget constraints meant that the visual effects in this movie were less realistic and more cartoonish, despite the fact that the technical department put in a lot of hard work. The film “Captain” is the first of its sort to be made in either Telugu or Tamil. If you are not willing to give this movie a second opportunity, then you should not waste your time watching it.

'Captain Miller' Movie Review

Dhanush is one of the best actors in Indian cinema and there are no two ways about it. Over the past decade, he developed a good market for himself in the Telugu states as well. He even made a bilingual movie ‘Sir’ last year which was a success. Now, he is arriving with a raw action drama titled ‘Captain Miller’. The exciting trailer has raised the expectations on the movie and let us see how the movie turned out.

Set in the pre-Independence era, Agni (Dhanush) is a village youngster who belongs to a poor family. The people of that village are now allowed to enter the temple due to their caste. The ruler of that area and his family don’t treat the villagers well. These people live in small houses that were lent to the temple by their ancestors. The ruler wants to drive them away from that area. Unable to withstand these atrocities, Agni joins the British army and becomes ‘Captain Miller’. But some heartbreaking incidents make him turn against the Britishers as well. He is hated by his villagers and becomes a criminal and rebels against the Britishers. What will Miller do? How will he save his village people from both the ruler as well as the British people? Answers to these questions form the rest of the story.

Dhanush hits it out of the park even if he is given regular roles. Imagine he gets a warrior role who fights against British rule as well as caste discrimination! Along with his acting, there are ample heroic moments and hero elevation shots. The action sequences were brilliantly designed and executed. They are a treat to action lovers. The period backdrop gives a unique visual appeal and the artistic frames are a delight. On top of everything, there is strong content in this movie and GV Prakash gave his best when it comes to elevating the proceedings with his super background score. In addition to this, the superb cameos of Shiva Rajkumar and Sundeep Kishan are good too. There are many highlights in ‘Captain Miller’ but the director failed to tie all of them together with an engaging screenplay. Despite all the attractions, you get a feeling that there is something missing in this movie.

The first scene where the audiences feel moved and get involved in the movie is when the British force the Indians in their army to kill the freedom fighters who are staging a protest. It makes you emotional and some shots stay with you. The story takes a turn from here and the transformation of the hero’s character starts as well. We get one action sequence after another that elevates the hero’s character. The pre-interval chase scene involving the god’s idol was wonderful. But the hero’s motive wavers at the beginning of the second half and people get confused about his relationship with villagers again. Action takes the front seat in the second half and the emotion works out pretty well during the end portions. The action scenes are on the next level and the way in which the hero’s gang fights against the British army is compelling and arresting to watch. The tight screenplay and emotion at the last stages of the film should have been carried throughout. This would have made ‘Captain Miller’ a classic. Without proper detailing, the director jumped from one part to another in the name of chapters. This led to a lot of confusion and a lack of emotion. The slow pace is a big minus. It is Dhanush’s performance, action sequences, visuals and background scores that make you watch this film. But it is better to keep your expectations in check.

Performances :

What can we say about Dhanush? He is an actor par excellence. He proved time and again that he can play any role with the same conviction. Whether it is a boy-next-door or a complex character like Captain Miller, Dhanush delivers every time. He showed once again that he is the best in business. The character had a lot of shades and his makeover amazes you. His performance is fantastic and he acted mostly with his eyes.

Priyanka Arul Mohan gets a good role and delivers a mature performance. Kumarvel did a key role and excelled in it. Shiva Rajkumar and Sundeep Kishan make a strong impact with their cameos. John Kokken and Jayaprakash impressed as well. The rest of the actors did a fine job as well.

Technicians :

After Dhanush, it is GV Prakash Kumar who is the hero of this movie offscreen. ‘Captain Miller’ doesn’t have many songs but his background score is the biggest asset to this film. He elevated a lot of normal scenes and his work during the action episodes is jaw-dropping. Siddharth Nuni’s camerawork is very artistic. Some frames stay with you and the fight scenes were captured very well. The production values are great as well. The hard work of the art department is visible on the screen.

Writer and director Arun Matheswaran’s efforts can be seen in terms of script and taking. The backdrop he picked for this movie is impressive but his narration faltered in many places. His screenplay was all over the place and the pace was too slow as well. But his director and taking should be appreciated. Had he taken better care with the screenplay, the movie would have been a classic.
