My Favourite Book Essay in Marathi माझे आवडते पुस्तक निबंध  आज आपण या लेखामध्ये माझे आवडते पुस्तक (my favourite book) या विषयावर निबंध लिहिणार आहोत. जगामध्ये अनेक विषयावर आणि अनेक सत्य घटनांच्यावर, ज्ञानामध्ये भर पडणारी अशी अनेक पुस्तके असतात. पुस्तक वाचण्याचे अनेक लोकांना आवड असते तसेच अनेकजन अनेक पुस्तके वाचतात आणि काही लोक असे देखील असतात ज्यांना नवनवीन पुस्तके वाचण्यास खूप आवडते कि त्यांच्या घरामध्ये इतकी वेगवेगळी पुस्तके असतात किं त्यांचे घर म्हणजे एक छोटेसे ग्रंथालय बनलेले असते.

तसेच आमच्या घरामध्ये देखील एक छोटेसे ग्रंथालय असल्यासारखेच म्हणावे लागेल कारण वेगवेगळ्या पुस्तकांनी आमचे कपाट भरलेले आहे कारण आमच्या घरामध्ये देखील माझ्या भावाला आणि मला पुस्तक वाचण्याची आणि नवनवीन गोष्टींच्या विषयी जाणून घेण्याची खूप उत्सुकता असते त्यामुळे आम्ही कोणत्याही पुस्तक दुकांमध्ये गेलो कि कोणते ना कोणते छोटे मोठे पुस्तक घरी घेवून येतोच.

घरामध्ये जरी आपल्या अनेक चांगली पुस्तके, आपल्या ज्ञानामध्ये भर पडणारी, माहिती देणारी, पूर्वीच्या सत्य घटना सांगणारी, वाचाल्यानात्र आपले मनोरंजन होणारी अशी अनेक पुसतके असतात. कोणत्याही वाचनाची आवड असणाऱ्या व्यक्तीला जरी अनेक वेगवेगळ्या प्रकारची पुस्तके वाचायला आवडत असली तरी आणि जरी घरी अनेक वेगवेगळी पुस्तके असली तरी एक आवडीचे पुस्तक असतेच.

जे पुस्तक आपल्याला कितीही वाचले तरी कंटाळा येत नाही आणि ते पुस्तक आपण जपून ठेवतो तसेच माझे देखील एक आवडते पुस्तक आहे जे मला खूप वाचायला आवडते आणि मी पहिल्यांदा वाचलेले पुस्तक म्हणजे ‘महाभारत’ आणि मला आजही हे पुस्तक वाचायला खूप आवडते त्यामुळे मी हे पुस्तक कधी कधी वाचते त्यामुळे मला पुस्तक सारखे सारखे वाचून महाभारत कसे घडले, पांडव आणि कौरवांच्या मधे युध्द कसे झाले तसेच भगवान श्री कृष्णाने अर्जुनाला युद्धासाठी कसे समजावले या सारख्या महाभारतामध्ये घडलेल्या गोष्टी चांगल्याच लक्षात राहिल्या आहेत.

महाभारत हा एक प्राचीन म्हणजेच खूप पूर्वीचा ग्रंथ आहे आणि या ग्रंथाला एक संस्कृत काव्यग्रंथ म्हणून गणले जाते तसेच या ग्रंथाबद्दल असे देखील म्हटले जाते कि हा ग्रंथ महर्षी परशराम व्यास यांनी श्री गणपती कडून लिहून घेतला होता. महाभारत हा ग्रंथ भारतामधील एक जुना आणि पौराणिक आणि धार्मिक महा काव्य आहे. महाभारत या पुस्तकामध्ये पांडव आणि कौरव  यांच्यामध्ये युध्द कसे झाले तसेच पांडवांचा वनवास, द्रौपदीचे वस्त्रहरण कसे झाले या सर्व गोष्टींच्या विषयी माहिती आहे. महाभारत हे प्रथम लिहिताना संस्कृत मध्ये लिहिले होते आणि महाभारत या ग्रंथामध्ये एक लाखाहून अधिक ग्रंथ श्लोक आहेत.

महाभारत ह्या ग्रंथाला भारतामध्ये खूप महत्वाचे स्थान आहे आणि हिंदूंच्या लेखी तर या ग्रंथाला खूप महत्वाचा आहे आणि हिंदू धर्मातील हा मुख्य ग्रंथ आहे. या ग्रंथामध्ये जरी अनेक पात्रे असली तरी यामध्ये मुख्य पात्र आहेत आणि त्यामधील मुख्य पात्रांची नावे म्हणजे श्री कृष्ण, भीष्म, अर्जुन, कर्ण, द्रोणाचार्य, धृतराष्ट्र, दुर्योधन, अभिमन्यू, युधिष्ठीर, द्रौपदी, कुंती आणि गांधारी हे महाभारतातील मुख्य पात्र आहेत. महाभारतामध्ये महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका हि भगवान श्री कृष्ण यांनी बजावली आहे. महाभारत हा ग्रंथ खूप मोठा आहे आणि हा ग्रंथ लिहिण्यासाठी ३ वर्ष लागले होते असे म्हटले जाते.

महाभारत हे पुस्तक खूप जुने पुस्तक आहे आणि हे पुस्तक भूतकाळातील सत्य घटनेवर आधारित आहे. महाभारत हे पुस्तक सर्वात जुने आणि जगातील पहिले पुस्तक आहे. महाभारतामध्ये म्हणजे हे एक युध्द होते जे पांडव आणि कौरव  यांच्यामध्ये लागले होते आणि हे हस्तिनापुर येथील सत्तेसाठी लागले होते.

महाभारत या पुस्तकामध्ये अशी कथा आहे कि हस्तिनापुर हि एक राजधानी होती आणि तेथे धृतराष्ट्र आणि पांडू हे दोन भाऊ हे दोन भाऊ एक राजघराण्यात राहत होते आणि तेथील सत्ता हि त्यांच्या घराण्याकडेच होती ज्यावेळी धृतराष्ट्र आणि पांडू यांच्यामधील एकाला राजा करण्याची वेळ आली त्यावेळी पांडू हस्तिनापूरचा राजा बनला आणि धृतराष्ट्र अंध असल्यामुळे त्याला राजा बनता आले नाही. काही दिवसांनी त्यांचे लागण झाले राजा पांडू यांच्या पत्नीचे नाव कुंती होते आणि धृतराष्ट्राच्या पत्नीचे नाव गांधारी होते.

पांडू राजाला पाच पुत्र होती त्यांची नावे अर्जुन, नकुल, सहदेव, भीम आणि युधिष्ठीर हे पुत्र होते तसेच गांधारीला आणि धृतराष्ट्राला शंभर मुले होती परंतु त्यांचे मोठे पुत्र दुर्योधन आणि युधिष्टिर हे होते. धृतराष्ट्राच्या मुलांना कौरव  म्हणत होते आणि पांडू राज्याच्या मुलांना पांडव म्हणत होते.

दुर्योधन आणि आणि युधिष्टिर यांचा एक मामा होता आणि त्याचे नाव शकुनी असे होते आणि शकुनी मामा हा आपल्या भाच्यांच्या मनामध्ये पांडव पुत्रांच्याविषयी तिरस्काराची आणि भेदभावाची भावना निर्माण करत होता तसेच काही वेळा दुर्योधन आणि शकुनी मामाने पांडवांना संपवण्याचा किती तरी वेळा प्रयत्न केला होता आणि परंतु त्यावेळी त्यांचे प्रयत्न निष्फळ ठरले होते. कौरवांनी एके दिवशी पांडू पुत्रांना जुगार खेळण्यासाठी आमंत्रित केले होते आणि कौरव आणि पांडवांच्या मध्ये हा खेळ सुरु झाला आणि या खेळामध्ये पांडवांना अपयश आले आणि त्यांनी त्यांचे द्रौपदी सह राज्य गमावले.

तसेच त्यांना बारा वर्ष वनवास सहन करावा लागला आणि त्यांनी एक वर्ष अज्ञात वास सहन केला होता. १२ वर्षाचा वनवास सहन करून जेंव्हा पांडवा त्यांच्या राजधानीमध्ये म्हणजेच हस्तिनापुर मध्ये आले तेंव्हा हस्तिनापुर दुर्योधनाच्या सत्तेखाली होते आणि त्यावेल गौरावांनी पांडवांना राज्य देण्यास नाकर दिला. त्यावेळी श्री कृष्णाने अर्जुनाला सांगितले कि राज्य मिळवण्यासाठी आपल्याला युध्द करावे लागेल. पांडवांच्या बाजूने फक्त भगवान श्री कृष्ण होते तर गौरावांच्या बाजूने त्यांचे सर्व नातेवाईक होते आणि हे अर्जुनाचे देखील नातेवाईक होते.

राज्य न परत मिळाल्यामुळे युध्द सुरु झाले आणि युद्धामध्ये अर्जुनाला आपल्या नातेवाईकांच्या विरुद्ध लढायचे होते आणि अर्जुनाच्या विरुद्ध त्याचे काका, मामा, भाऊ आणि इतर नातेवाईक देखील होते आणि हे पाहून खूप दुखः झाले आणि तो उदास झाला आणि युद्ध करण्यास नकार देवू लागला परंतु भगवान श्री कृष्णांनी अर्जुनाला समजावले आणि युद्धासाठी तयार केले.

कौरव आणि पांडव यांच्यामध्ये १८ दिवस युध्द झाले आणि यामध्ये पांडवांचा विजय झाला आणि त्यांना परत हस्तिनापूरचे राज्य मिळाले. अश्या प्रकारे महाभारताची कथा आहे आणि हि कथा वाचताना खूप छान वाटते आणि महाभारत वाचताना कंटाळा येत नाही.

1) पुस्तकाची आत्मकथा निबंध | Pustakachi Atmakatha in Marathi (300 शब्द)

एके दिवशी मी माझे कपाट स्वच्छ करीत होतो. माझ्या आजूबाजूला अनेक पुस्तके पडली होती. त्यातच मला एक जुने पुस्तक मिळाले ज्यात महान भारतीयाचा इतिहास लिहिलेला होता. त्या पुस्तकाची स्थिती खराब होती. मी त्याला स्वच्छ करून वाचतच होतो इतक्यात पुस्तक बोलू लागले. मी थोडा घाबरलो हे कसे शक्य आहे. पण त्याने मला धीर देत म्हटले, "घाबरू नकोस, मला तुझ्याशी फार दिवसांपासून बोलण्याची इच्छा होती मी तुला माझी आत्मकथा सांगू इच्छितो." 

पुस्तक मला सांगू लागले माझा जन्म एका कारखान्यात झाला होता माझ्या पानावर महान भारतीयाचा इतिहास लिहिलेला आहे. मला या गोष्टीचा फार अभिमान आणि आनंद देखील होता. या नंतर मला एका वाचनालयात पाठवण्यात आले वाचनालय मध्ये असताना मला वाटायला लागले कि माझ्या पानांवर छापलेला इतिहास वाचण्यासाठी लोक पळत येतील, परंतु असे काहीही झाले नाही. लोकांना माझ्यात असलेल्या इतिहासात सारस्य नव्हते. मग काय मी वर्षानुवर्षे धूळ खात पडून राहिलो. मी वाट पाहत होतो कि कोणीतरी येऊन मला नेईल. 

शेवटी मला वाटायला लागले कि माझे आयुष्य याच वाचनालयात धूळ खात संपून जाईल. तेव्हाच मला शोधत तू आला, मला खूप आनंद झाला. तू मला घरी घेऊन आला व माझ्या पानांवर छापलेला इतिहास मोठ्या आनंदाने वाचू लागला. मी पुन्हा आनंदित झालो मला वाटायला लागले कि मला खूप चांगला मालक मिळालेला आहे.

माझ्या इच्छेनुसार काही दिवस तर तू मला अतिशय मन लावून वाचले. पण त्यानंतर तू मला एका टेबलावर ठेऊन विसरून गेलास. तेथे माझ्यावर पाणी पडले. मी ओला झालो, पण तुझे माझ्यावर लक्ष नव्हते. तुझ्या आईने स्वछता करीत असताना मला उचलून कपाटाच्या वर ठेऊन दिले. तेव्हा पासून तर आजपर्यंत मी तेथेच पडलेलो होतो. 

मला खूप वाईट वाटत होते. तेथे पडून पडून माझे पाने मोकळे होऊ लागले. मला वाटले कि लवकरच माझा अंत होईल. पण आज तू येऊन मला वाचवले. पुस्तकाला एका गुरु प्रमाणे मानले जाते. ज्याप्रमाणे तू आपल्या गुरूचा सम्मान करतो त्याच प्रमाणे माझा तसेच इतर पुस्तकाचा पण सम्मान करत जा. जर तू मला वाचून संपवले असेल तर मला आपल्या मित्रांना भेट देऊन त्यांचेही ज्ञान वाढव.

पुस्तकाने माझ्याशी साधलेल्या या संवादानंतर मी देखील पुस्तकांची योग्य देखरेख ठेवण्याचा निर्णय घेतला.

2) पुस्तकाचे मनोगत मराठी निबंध | pustakache manogat nibandh marathi

मी एक पुस्तक आहे, ज्या रूपात मी आज दिसत आहे आधीच्या काळात मी असा नव्हतो. गुरुद्वारे शिष्यानां मौखिक ज्ञान दिले जायचे व गुरु शिष्य परंपरेने ज्ञान एका पिढी पासून दुसऱ्या पिढीपर्यंत जात होते. त्या काळात कागदाचा शोध लागला नव्हता. 

या पद्धतीत हळू हळू अवघडपणा येऊ लागला. ज्ञानाला सुरक्षित ठेवण्यासाठी त्याला कुठे तरी लिहून ठेवणे आवश्यक होते. तेव्हा प्राचीन ऋषी मुनींनी भोजपत्रावर लिहिणे सुरू केले. भोजपत्र कागदाचे प्रथम रूप होते. भोजपत्र आजच्या काळातही पाहायला मिळतात. आपल्या देशातील अतिप्राचीन साहित्य भोजपत्रांवरच लिहिले आहे. आशा पद्धतीने प्राचीन काळातील माझे रूप होते.

माझे कागदी रूप निर्माण करण्यासाठी गवत, लाकडाचे तुकडे, जुने कपडे इत्यादी गोष्टींना मिक्स करून बनवले जाते. लेखक त्याने लिहिलेली माहिती घेऊन येतो व यानंतर ती माहिती माझ्यावर छापली जाते. या साठी छापखण्यातील मशीन वापरले जातात. छापखण्यात तयार झाल्यावर माझ्या सर्व पेजेसला डिंक आणि पिना मारून जोडले जाते व अश्या पद्धतीने मी तयार होतो.

या नंतर प्रकाशक मला त्याच्या कार्यालयात घेऊन जातो तेथे माझे प्रकाशन केले जाते. प्रकाशित केल्यानंतर मला विक्रेत्याच्या हाती विकले जाते. विक्रेते आपल्या दुकानात मला विकायला ठेवतात. या शिवाय वेगवेगळ्या वाचनालयात मला पाठवले जाते. वाचनालयात दिवसभरातून भरपूर लोक मला वाचायला येतात.  सध्याच्या काळात माझी मागणी खूप आहे. मला मोठं मोठ्या पुस्तकालय मध्ये सांभाळून ठेवले जाते. मला विद्याची देवी सरस्वती चे स्थान दिले जाते. ज्यांचा छंद वाचनाची आवड  असतो  असे सर्व जण माझे घट्ट  मित्र बनतात. मी सुद्धा त्यांना ज्ञान देऊन त्याचा अंधकार दूर करतो. 

जर कोणी माझी निगा न राखता मला फाडले तर मला ते आवडत नाही. बरेच लोक मला रद्दी मध्ये टाकून देतात. भाजीपाला तसेच किराणा दुकानदार मला फाडून टाकतात. माझी इच्छा आहे की मला सम्मानाने ठेवायला हवे जर तुम्ही मला वाचून संपवले असेल तर दुसरे कोणाला देऊन टाका पण माझा वापर आदराने करा. कितीतरी लोक परिश्रम करून मला तुमच्या पर्यंत पोचवतात.

या शिवाय आजकाल अनेक लोक वाचनासाठी मोबाइल चा उपयोग करतात. मोबाइल चे फायदे आणि तोटे   मध्ये आहेत तासन्तास मोबाइल मध्ये वाचन केल्याने डोळ्यांना त्रास निर्माण होतो. शेवटी मला अशा आहे की तुम्ही माझ्या डिजिटल रुपाचे वाचन न करता माझ्या भौतिक रुपाचाच उपयोग करणार  व मला नेहमी सन्मानाने ठेवणार. धन्यवाद

माझे आवडते पुस्तक.

          मला वाचनाचा खूप छंद आहे. पाठ्यपुस्तकांसोबतच इतरही अनेक पुस्तके वाचण्याची मला आवड आहे. मी माझ्या शाळेच्या ग्रंथालयातून खूप चांगली चांगली पुस्तके आणून वाचली आहेत. या सर्व पुस्तकांमध्ये मला आवडलेले पुस्तक म्हणजे गांधीजींची आत्मकथा. ‘सत्याचे प्रयोग’   असे या पुस्तकाचे नाव आहे. या पुस्तकाने माझ्यावर खूप प्रभाव पाडला आहे.

          गांधीजींनी हे पुस्तक त्यांच्या मातृभाषेमध्ये म्हणजेच गुजराती भाषेमध्ये लिहिले आहे. त्याचे नाव आहे ‘ सत्य ना प्रायोगो’. हिंदी आणि इंग्रजी भाषांबरोबरच मराठी भाषेमध्ये सुद्धा या पुस्तकाचा अनुवाद केलेला आहे. हिंदी मध्ये या पुस्तकाचे नाव ‘सत्य के प्रयोग’ , मराठी मध्ये ‘सत्याचे प्रयोग’ आणि इंग्रजीमध्ये या पुस्तकाचे नाव ‘एकस्परीमेंट ऑफ ट्रुथ’ असे आहे. भारतातील इतर अनेक भाषांमध्ये सुद्धा या पुस्तकाचा अनुवाद झाला आहे. महात्मा गांधी आपल्या जीवनामध्ये सत्याला सर्वात जास्त महत्व द्यायचे. याच कारणामुळे त्यांनी आपल्या आत्मकथेला हेच नाव दिले.

          ‘सत्याचे प्रयोग’ या पुस्तकामध्ये महात्मा गांधीजींनी आपल्या चुकांचे आणि वाईट गुणांचे अगदी मन मोकळेपणाने वर्णन केले आहे. त्यांनी त्यांच्या धुम्रपानाबाबत, मांसाहार आणि चोरी करणे या विषयी देखील त्यांनी कोणतीही गोष्ट लपवली नाही. स्वतःकडून झालेली प्रत्येक चूक त्यांनी स्वीकार केली आहे. त्यांनी हे सुद्धा सांगितले आहे की कशा प्रकारे ते या वाईट गोष्टींच्या मार्गाला लागले आणि कशी त्यांनी या सर्वातून स्वतःची सुटका करून घेतली याबाबत सविस्तर या पुस्तकामध्ये सांगितले आहे. याशिवाय गांधीजींनी आपल्याला झालेल्या शिक्षा, विलायत यात्रा, दक्षिण आफ्रिकेमधील सत्याग्रह आणि भारतामध्ये झालेल्या आंदोलनांची या पुस्तकामध्ये सविस्तर माहिती देण्यात आली आहे.

          गांधीजींचे हे पुस्तक आपल्याला खूप प्रेरणा देऊन जाते. एक सामान्य माणूस कशा प्रकारे महान बनला ही शिकवण या पुस्तकातून आपल्याला मिळते. महात्मा गांधीजी सत्य, कठोर परिश्रम, प्रामाणिकपणा आणि आत्मशक्ती यांच्या जोरावरच ते आपल्या देशातील एक महान नेता आणि युगपुरुष बनले. त्यांच्या याच गुणांमुळे आज आपण महात्मा गांधीजींना ‘राष्ट्रपिता’ या रुपामध्ये स्मरण करतो.

          या पुस्तकाची भाषा खूप सोपी आणि हृदयस्पर्शी आहे. या पुस्तकाच्या लेखनाची शैलीसुद्धा खूपच रोचक आहे. या पुस्काचे वाचन केल्याने वाचणाऱ्याच्या मनामध्ये सत्य, अहिंसा, प्रेम, आत्मविश्वास आणि मानव-सेवा या भावना जागृत होतात.

          गांधीजींची ही आत्मकथा वाचून मला खूप फायदा झाला आहे. या पुस्तकाच्या प्रभावाने मी माझ्या खूपअशा वाईट सवयींपासून सुटका मिळवली आहे.

          माझ्याप्रमाणे इतर अनेक लोकांनी सुद्धा गांधीजींची आत्मकथा वाचून आपल्या जीवनाचा योग्य मार्ग निवडला आहे. आपल्या देशामध्ये समाज सुधारणा, दलितांचा उद्धार तसेच शोषणाविरुद्ध आवाज उठवण्यासाठी हे पुस्तक खूप उपयोगी असल्याचे सिद्ध झाले आहे. आत्ता तर हे पुस्तक माझे एक चांगले मित्र, गुरु आणि मार्गदर्शक बनले आहे. ज्या प्रमाणे महात्मा गांधीजी माझे आवडते नेता आहेत, त्याच प्रमाणे त्यांचे हे आत्मकथेचे पुस्तक सुद्धा माझे आवडते पुस्तक आहे. प्रत्येक भारतीयाने गांधीजींची आत्मकथा हे पुस्तक एकदातरी अवश्य वाचले पाहिजे.

आपल्या कामाचे जास्त परिणाम कसे मिळवावे ?

आपल्या सगळ्यांकडे एका दिवसाचे २४ तास असतात. मग का काही लोक रोजचे काम रोज पूर्ण करतात? आणि काही लोकांजवळ आज सुद्धा कालचे काम प्रलंबित असते आणि आजचे काम ते उद्यावर पण नेतात? काही लोकांना खूप काम करूनही पाहिजे तसे निकाल का मिळत नाहीत आणि काही लोक कमी काम करूनही यशस्वी का होतात?

१) डॉमिनो इफेक्ट समजून घ्या.

ह्याचाच उपयोग करून आपण आपले लक्ष्य ठरवू शकतो. म्हणजे आजचे केलेले छोटे काम उद्या जास्त परिणाम देते. जर आपल्याला एका वर्षात ३६५ पानांचे पुस्तक लिहायचे असेल तर एका दिवशी एक पान लिहावे लागेल आणि एका तासात एक किंवा २ पॅराग्राफ.

एखाद्या व्यावसायिकाला जर अरबपती व्हायचे असेल तर त्याला अगोदर करोडपती व्हावे लागेल आणि त्याही अगोदर त्याला लखपती व्हावे लागेल आणि लखपती होण्यासाठी त्याला काही हजार रुपये जमवावे लागतील. म्हणजेच पुढच्या वर्षांची लक्ष्ये पूर्ण करण्यासाठी त्याला आज छोटे काही तरी काम करावे लागेल.

२) मल्टी टास्किंग खोटी गोष्ट आहे. जर एखादा शिकारी एकाच वेळेस दोन ससे पकडण्याचा प्रयत्न करेल तर काय निकाल येईल ? एकही ससा मिळणार नाही. एकाच वेळेस दोन रस्ते बदलत राहाल तर काही मिळणार नाही.

ह्याऐवजी आपला वेळ आणि विचार एका गोष्टीवर लावा ते जास्त निकाल देईल. ह्यासाठी Time Block करणे तुम्ही शिकू शकता. Time block करणे म्हणजे एखाद्या महत्वाच्या कामासाठी वेळ काढणे .

त्या वेळेत बाकी कमी महत्वाची कामे पूर्ण बंद. आणि बघा खरे महत्वाचे काम कसे पार पडते ते. महत्वाचे काम पूर्ण झाल्यानंतरच दुसरे कमी महत्वाचे काम हातात घ्या आणि त्याला सुद्धा Time block करून पूर्ण करा.

३) मनुष्याजवळ इच्छाशक्ती सीमित असते. मनुष्याची इच्छाशक्ती मोबाईल फोनच्या बॅटरी सारखी असते. तिला रोज चार्ज करावी लागते. प्रत्येकच मनुष्याला निसर्गतःच रोज एक ऊर्जा मिळते.

ही ऊर्जा सकाळी जास्त असते आणि दिवसभर नंतर कमी कमी होत जाते. म्हणून आपल्याला महत्वाचे काम सकाळीच पार पडणे शिकले पाहिजे.

सकाळच्या वेळेत कमी महत्वाची कामे बाजूला सारा आणि खऱ्या महत्वाच्या कामावर काम करणे शिका. दुसऱ्या दिवशी इच्छाशक्ती परत मिळते.

जास्त इच्छाशक्ती साठवण्यासाठी आपण आपल्या डोक्यात यशस्वी लोकांच्या गोष्टी शिरवून आपली इच्छाशक्ती वारंवार चार्ज करू शकतो.

४) आपली To Do लिस्ट बनवा. Pareto चा ८०-२० नियम तुम्हाला माहित असेलच. ह्या नियमाप्रमाणे आपल्या एकूण कामाच्या फक्त २० टक्के कामाने आपल्याला अपेक्षित परिणामाच्या ८० टक्के परिणाम मिळतात आणि ह्याउलट आपण केलेल्या ८० टक्के कामांनी आपल्याला फक्त २० टक्के परिणाम मिळतात.

ह्याचा अर्थ असा कि आपल्या To Do list मध्ये रोज अशी कामे असली पाहिजेत कि ज्या कामांमुळे आपल्याला हवे असलेले निकाल मिळतील. ह्याउलट आपल्या लिस्ट मध्ये कमी महत्वाची कामे सगळ्यात खाली असावी.

तर आपल्यासाठी Focusing Question.. आपली One Thing काय की जी केल्याने बाकी गोष्टी सोप्या होतील किंवा त्या करण्याची गरजच राहणार नाही? आपल्या One Thing साठी आजच कार्य करणे सुरु करा.

राहुलच्या घराचे नुतनीकरण चालू होते. सगळे सामान उलटे पालटे झाले होते. राहुल त्यातून कुतुहुलाने एक एक गोष्ट बघत होता आणि प्रत्येक वस्तू बरोबरच्या जुन्या आठवणी त्याच्या मनात जाग्या होत होत्या. इतक्यात त्याला कण्हण्याचा आवाज ऐकू आला. त्याने दचकून पहिले तर कोणीच नव्हते. तो इकडे तिकडे पहात असतांना त्याला बोलणे ऐकू आले. “राहुल, अरे तुझ्या समोर बघ. मी बोलतोय. तुझे आवडते पुस्तक, ’कुण्या एकाची भ्रमणगाथा’ ” राहुल ने तिकडे पहिले तर अत्यंत जीर्ण अवस्थेतील एक पुस्तक पडले होते. त्याने ते हातात घेतले तर एक दोन पाने गळून पडली. त्याला वाईट वाटले. हे पुस्तक मिळविण्यासाठी काही वर्षांपूर्वी त्याने अख्खी मुंबई पालथी घातली होती. शेवटी हुतात्मा चौकात फुटपाथवर मिळाले होते.

एका मोठ्या समारंभात माझे प्रकाशन झाले आणि लोकांच्या दुकानात उड्या पडायला लागल्या मला घेण्यासाठी. पाहता पाहता माझ्या सर्व आवृत्त्या खपल्या आणि मला परत छपाईच्या दिव्यातून जावे लागले. माझी पहिली आवृत्ती लेखकाने सही करून एका थोर साहित्यिकाला दिली. मी त्यांच्या दिवाणखान्यात एका सुंदर शो केस मध्ये विराजमान झालो. ते साहित्यिक आल्या गेल्यांना मला दाखवायचे. मग ते पण माझ्या आवृत्त्या विकत घ्यायचे. एकदा त्यांच्या एका नातलगाने वाचण्यासाठी मला देण्याची विनंती केली. साहित्यिक सरळ मनाचे होते. त्यांनी मला त्यांच्या हाती सुपूर्द केले आणि तिथूनच माझ्या दुर्दशेची सुरुवात झाली.

एका अपघातात तो रद्दीवाला पण हे जग सोडून गेला. मी परत पोरका झालो. त्याच्या मुलांनी सर्व पुस्तके हुतात्मा चौकातील एका फेरीवाल्याला विकली. आणि सर्व अनाथ पुस्तकांबरोबर मी पण रस्त्यावर गिऱ्हाइकांची वाट बघायला लागलो. आता टीव्हीचा जमाना आला होता आणि लोकांची मराठी पुस्तके वाचण्याची आवड कमी व्हायला लागली होती. एके काळी थोर थोर साहित्यिकांनी शोभणारा महाराष्ट्र पैसे घेऊन लिहिणाऱ्या लोकांनी भरून गेला. लोक पण मग साहित्यापासून दूर गेले. तरी पण तू राहुल मला शोधत आला म्हंटल्यावर मला आभाळ ठेंगणे झाले. तू मला घेतले, घट्ट हृदयाशी धरले आणि पळत पळत घरी आणले. तुझ्या घरी सगळ्यांना मला बघून खूप आनंद झाला. एकेकाने नंबर लाऊन माझे वाचन केले.

त्या जुन्या पुस्तकाची व्यथा ऐकून राहुलला स्वत:चीच लाज वाटली. त्याने पुन्हा त्या पुस्तकावर एक प्रेमळ नजर फिरवली आणि परत लहानपणीसारखे ते पुस्तक हृदयाशी घट्ट धरले. त्याने ठरवले, घरात एक पुस्तकांचे मोठे कपाट नक्की ठेवेन आणि सर्व नामवंत साहित्यिकांची पुस्तके तेथे जपून ठेवीन.

गुन्हे आणि गुप्तहेरांवर पुस्तके आहेत. कॉनन डॉयल यांनी लिहिलेले शेरलॉक होम्स हे असेच एक पुस्तक आहे. हे अंदाज शोधण्याची आणि गुन्हे शोधण्याची आपली शक्ती वाढवतात. ते वाचण्यासारखे आहे.

धर्मावर पुस्तके आहेत. गीताने माझ्यावर सर्वाधिक प्रभाव टाकला आहे. सर्व धर्मांच्या ग्रंथांमध्ये सत्कर्मांवर भर दिला आहे. पुस्तकांनी वैज्ञानिकांना शोधाचा मार्ग दाखवला आहे. कवी प्रथम स्वप्न पाहतात. अशी यंत्रे आणि उपकरणे शोधून वैज्ञानिक आपली स्वप्ने साकार करतात.

जगातील महान व्यक्तींवरची पुस्तकेही आहेत. ते महान कसे झाले आणि त्यांनी मोठेपणा कसा मिळवला हे ते सांगतात. अशी पुस्तके जरूर वाचावीत. आपण केवळ निवडक पुस्तकेच वाचली पाहिजे जी आपले व्यक्तिमत्व आणि व्यक्तिमत्व विकसित करण्यास मदत करतात.

पुस्तके हा आपल्या जीवनाचा एक महत्त्वाचा भाग आहे. ती आम्हाला केवळ ज्ञानाच्या समृद्ध खजिन्याचीच ओळख करून देत नाही तर असंख्य थिएटरच्या फेरफटका मारायलाही घेऊन जाते. इथे या निबंधात आपण पुस्तकांचे महत्त्व, त्यांचे फायदे, उपयुक्तता, त्यांच्यापासून शिकण्यासारख्या गोष्टींचा विचार करून निष्कर्ष काढू.

पुस्तकांचे महत्त्व:

पुस्तकांचे महत्त्व अविभाज्य आहे. ते यशस्वी जीवनाकडे उज्वल क्षितिजाकडे घेऊन जातात. पुस्तके आपल्याला वेगवेगळ्या ठिकाणांचे, विषयांचे आणि काळाचे ज्ञान देतात. ते एखाद्या व्यक्तीचे मन नवीन विचार, समज आणि समृद्धीने भरतात.

पुस्तकांचे फायदे:

पुस्तके वाचून अनेक फायदे मिळतात. प्रथम, ते आपल्याला सुज्ञ गोष्टी शिकवतात. ते आम्हाला विविध विषयांवर कौशल्य प्रदान करतात. याशिवाय मनोवैज्ञानिक आणि नैतिक मूल्ये समजण्यासही पुस्तके मदत करतात.

पुस्तकांची उपयुक्तता:

पुस्तके आपल्या वैयक्तिक आणि व्यावसायिक जीवनात उपयुक्त आहेत. ते आम्हाला आमच्या दैनंदिन जीवनातील समस्यांवर उपाय शोधण्यात मदत करतात आणि सकारात्मक मानसिकतेसह समस्यांना तोंड देण्याची क्षमता प्रदान करतात.

पुस्तकांमधून शिकण्यासारख्या गोष्टी:

पुस्तके आपल्याला जीवनाचे मौल्यवान धडे देतात. ती शिकवते की खरे यश मनाची शुद्धता, समर्पण आणि कठोर परिश्रमातून मिळते. ती असेही म्हणते की सर्व लोकांना समान वागणूक दिली पाहिजे आणि त्यांच्या स्वप्नांचा पाठपुरावा करण्यासाठी प्रोत्साहित केले पाहिजे.

पुस्तके ही आपल्या जीवनाची रंगभूमी आहे. ते आपल्याला नवीन दिशेने घेऊन जातात, नवीन स्वप्नांच्या उंचीला स्पर्श करण्याची संधी देतात. पुस्तके आपल्याला विचार करण्यास, समजून घेण्यासाठी आणि शिकण्यास प्रेरित करतात. आम्हाला अधिक ज्ञानी बनवते आणि सकारात्मक आणि समृद्ध जीवन जगण्यासाठी प्रेरणा देते.

पुस्तके ही काळाच्या महासागरातील दीपगृहासारखी असतात. त्यांच्याशिवाय देवही अस्तित्वात आहे, न्यायही झोपतो, नैसर्गिक विज्ञान स्तब्ध आहे, तत्त्वज्ञान स्तब्ध आहे, शब्द शून्य आहेत आणि सर्व गोष्टी अंधकारमय आहेत. आपल्याला केवळ शारीरिकच नव्हे तर मानसिक इच्छाही पूर्ण करायच्या आहेत. अशा प्रकारे, पुस्तकांशिवाय जगणे कठीण आहे, अप्रचलितपणा वेदनादायक आहे.

परंतु, सध्या मुद्राराक्षसाच्या करिष्म्यामुळे जगात दररोज हजारो पुस्तके प्रकाशित होत आहेत. ते सर्व चांगले आहेत असे म्हणता येणार नाही. अनेक पुस्तके म्हणजे केवळ अश्लीलतेचे खोके, मोहिनीचे तळघर, वासनेच्या चिथावणीखोर कथा. काही पुस्तके वाचणे म्हणजे विष पिण्यासारखे आहे – टॉल्स्टॉय म्हणाला

दुसरी गोष्ट म्हणजे मनुष्य पृथ्वीवर अनंतकाळासाठी येत नाही. त्याचे आयुष्य खूप क्षणभंगुर आहे. त्यामुळे त्याला इच्छा असूनही अनेक पुस्तके वाचता येत नाहीत. वेळेच्या मर्यादेबरोबरच पैशाचीही मर्यादा असते. अनेक पुस्तके विकत घेऊन वाचणे शक्य होत नाही. याशिवाय रुचिवैभव आणि वायोवैभ्य अशी अनेक कारणे आहेत, ज्यामुळे पुस्तकांची निवड केवळ आवश्यकच नाही तर अनिवार्य बनते. बर्नार्ड शॉ म्हणाले होते की आज सर्वांना कसे वाचायचे ते माहित आहे, परंतु काय वाचायचे हे कोणालाही माहिती नाही.

निवड आवश्यक

प्रसिद्ध निबंधकार बेकन यांनी लिहिले आहे – “काही पुस्तके चाखण्यासाठी, काही गिळण्यासाठी आणि काही चावून पचण्यासाठी असतात.” होय! फार कमी पुस्तके अजिबात आत्मसात करण्यासारखी आहेत हे निश्चित. अशा पुस्तकांपैकी आपण वर्ग साहित्याचा विचार करू शकतो. काळाच्या कठोर कसोटीवरही ही पुस्तके सोन्यासारखी चमकत राहिली आहेत. त्यांच्यामध्ये काही खास आणि अद्वितीय घटक आहेत जे दूरवरून ओळखता येतात. ही पुस्तके काळाच्या वाटेवर गडगडाटांसारखी उभी आहेत. ना आपण सहस्रक्ष आहोत, ना आपण कालिदासांसारख्या देवीचे वरदान आहोत, ना आपण अश्वत्थामासारखे अमर्याद आहोत की आपण सर्व छापील-अमुद्रित पुस्तके वाचू शकतो. त्यामुळे विशिष्ट पुस्तके वाचण्याचा आमचा पहिला प्रयत्न आहे. यातील काही वाचले तर जीवनात फायदा होतो. या पुस्तकांमध्ये आपण वाल्मिकी रामायण, महाभारत, उपनिषदे, तुलसीकृत रामायण, रघुवंश, शेक्सपियर, मिल्टन, दांते, व्हर्जिलची कामे, बायबल, कुराण, भगवद्गीता इत्यादींचा समावेश करू शकतो. या पुस्तकांनी जगातील महान पुरुषांचे जीवन सजवले आहे, त्यांच्या विचारसरणीला या पुस्तकांच्या नवनिर्मितीमुळे बळ मिळाले आहे; त्यामुळे या पुस्तकांसाठी कोणाचेही मत घेण्याची गरज नाही. किंबहुना हे जीवनोपयोगी ग्रंथ स्वयंस्पष्ट झाले आहेत.

या ग्रंथांचा सतत अभ्यास केल्याने केवळ आवड निर्माण होत नाही तर ती विकसित आणि शुद्धही होते, पुस्तक चांगले की वाईट हे ठरवण्यास आपण सक्षम बनतो. अगदी लहान वयातच आपण मोठ्या माणसांच्या सहवासातून, त्यांच्या वैयक्तिक ग्रंथालयातून आणि त्यांच्याशी बोलून चांगल्या पुस्तकांची माहिती मिळवू शकतो. अंधारात डोकावत राहण्यापेक्षा लाईट लावून शोधणे चांगले. त्यामुळे अंदाज पद्धतीद्वारे वेळ वाया घालवणे योग्य नाही.

मला वाचायला खूप आवडते वाचन हा माझा छंद आहे आणि मी या छंदाची जोपासना सुद्धा करतो. मी आजपर्यंत अनेक कथा कादंबऱ्या बोधकथा वाचल्या आहेत.

आपल्या देशातील विविध लेखकांची पुस्तके मी वाचलेली आहेत. वाचनातून आपल्याला बरेच ज्ञान मिळते. आपल्याला अशी एकही व्यक्ती सापडणार नाही, ज्यांनी एकही पुस्तक वाचलेले नसेल.

एक यशस्वी व्यक्तीच्या मागे पुस्तकांचा खूप महत्त्वाचा वाटा असतो. विविध पुस्तकांचे वाचन करणे ही मनासाठी लागलेली एक चांगली क्रिया आहे, त्यासोबतच आत्म्यासाठी सुद्धा चांगले ठरतात. पुस्तके आपल्याला आपली भाषा आणि लेखन कौशल्य विकसित करण्यासाठी मदत करतात.

पुस्तकातून आपल्याला प्राचीन काळाबद्दल,इतिहासाबद्दल, धार्मिक, पौराणिक अशा सर्व बाबतीत ज्ञान मिळते.

मी बरीच पुस्तके वाचली आहेत ,यातून माझ्या मनावर कायमची छापा पडली आहे. मला पुस्तक या वाचायला आवडतील त्यातल्या त्यात पौराणिक पुस्तके वाचायला फार आवडते.

मी आज पर्यंत वाचलेल्या सर्व पुस्तकांपैकी मला आवडलेले पुस्तक म्हणजे,  वि. स. खांडेकर यांचे “यायाती” पुस्तक. ययाती वि स खांडेकर यांनी लिहिलेली एक कादंबरी आहे. वि स खांडेकर यांच्या वयातील हे पुस्तक आवडले मागे कारण म्हणजे या पुस्तकामध्ये अनेक पुराणातील घटना कैद केलेल्या आहेत. ययाती या कादंबरीचा पुराणाशी केवळ नावापुरता संबंध नसून, ही कादंबरी पौराणिक घटना एकत्र करून स्वतंत्ररित्या मांडली आहे.

पौराणिक कथा म्हणजे त्यामध्ये खूप काही भव्य आणि भयंकर लढा आढळून येतो. परंतु ययाती या कादंबरीमध्ये पुराणातील काही ठराविक कथा व घटना घेऊन जीवन हे काही क्षणापुरते तेच असते, असे सांगितले आहे. तर दुसऱ्या बाजूने जीवन हे चिरंतन, भौतिक आणि अध्यात्मिक आहे असे सांगितले आहे.

मी वाचलेला बहुतांश पुराणांमध्ये मला लढाई, युद्ध , डावपेच हे सर्व वाचायला मिळाले. परंतु यायाती या कादंबरीमध्ये किंवा पुस्तकामध्ये एका राजाच्या जीवनातील उतार चडपणा अतिशय सोप्या आणि सरळ शब्दांमध्ये आपल्या समोर मांडली आहे, त्यामुळे ययाती हे मला आवडलेले पुस्तक आहे.

वि.स. खांडेकर यांनी ययाती या कादंबरीची सुरुवात देव-दानव विद्या पासून केली आहे. या कादंबरीतील कथा अशी आहे ती म्हणजे – ययाती ची कथा ही महाभारतातील आदिपर्व या भागातील बरसे पात्र वि स खांडेकर यांनी या कादंबरीत दाखवले आहेत. वि स खांडेकर यांनी या कथेचे अगदी सुलभ आणि इतरांना कळेल अशा भाषेमध्ये मांडणी केली आहे.

ययाती चे वडील नहुष हे खूप शूर वीर असतात. परंतु त्यांच्या गैरवर्तन ना मुळे इंद्रदेव त्यांना शाप देतात की, नहुष नहाराजांची मुले कधीही सुखी राहणार नाहीत. जेव्हा नहुष महाराज युद्धावर असतात तेव्हा, यायातिला या शापा बद्दल कळते. ययाती चा लहान भाऊ याती हा लहानपणीच रजविलासा पासून दूर संन्यासी जीवन व्यतीत करतो.

ययाति ल नात्या शपाबद्दल कळाल्याने तो ही घाबरून जातो त्याला वाटते की, आता मला कधीही सुखी जीवन मिळणार नाही. पुढे ययाती चे लग्न शुक्राचार्य ची मुलगी देवयानी यांच्यासोबत झाले. देवयानी त्यांच्यासाठी त्यांची सखी सर्विष्ठा दासी म्हणून यायाती व देवयानी यांच्या सोबत राहू लागली. सर्विष्ठा‌चे सुंदर रुप पाहून यायाती राजा तिच्यावर मोहित झाला.

देवयानी काढून राजाला दोन पुत्र प्राप्त झाले,तर सर्विष्ठा कडून ययाती ला तीन पुत्र प्राप्त झाले. जेव्हा ही बातमी देवयानीला करती तेव्हा ती शुक्राचार्याला ययाती बद्दल सर्व हकीकत सांगते, त्यावर शुक्राचार्य य त्याला वृद्ध होण्याचा शाप देतात. तरी सुद्धा यायातीचा मनातील ही वासराचे भावना नष्ट होत नाही.

एके दिवशी यमराज देव ययाती ला घेण्यासाठी येतात, तेव्हा ययाती यम राजाजवळ विनंती करतो की त्याला पुन्हा तरुण्य दिले जावे. त्यावर यमराज म्हणतात की, तुझ्या सर्व पुत्रांपैकी एकादा पुत्र तुला त्याचे तारूण्य दान देत असेल तर, तुला तुझ्या यौवन परत मिळेल. आपला पितावर द्या करून यायाती चा पाचवा मुलगा त्याला यौवन दान करतो.

ययाती पुन्हा तरूण होऊन आपली वासनाची भूक मिटवण्यासाठी शंभर राणी सोबत लग्न करतो. व त्यातून त्याला शंभर पुत्र प्राप्त होतात.

त्यानंतर शंभर वर्षां नंतर यामराज पुन्हा ययातीला घ्यायला येतात, तेव्हा त्याच्यातील वासनाची न संपणारे भूक बघून आश्चर्यचकित होतात. ययाती पुन्हा यमराजाकडे यौवन साठी प्रार्थना करतो, त्यावर यमराज पुन्हा त्याला पहिल्यासारखेच वरदान देतात, यावर ययाती पुन्हा आपल्या एका मुलाचे यौवोन प्राप्त करतात व हा दिनक्रम पुढचे हजारो वर्षे चालतो.

अशाप्रकारे ययातिने सुखप्राप्तीसाठी वासना चा सहारा घेतला.

ययातीच्या याच वासना ची कहाणी ययाती या पुस्तकात सांगण्यात आली आहे. पुढे राजाला त्याच्या चूक लक्षात येऊन राजाने केलेला पश्चाताप याचे सुद्धा वर्णन केले आहे.

अशा प्रकारे यायातीची ही कहाणी अतिशय सुंदर शब्दांमध्ये वि. स .खांडेकर यांनी मांडली आहे. त्यांनी या पुस्तकातून मनुष्याच्या चिरतरुण राहण्याच्या व भोगवादी वृत्ती वर एक प्रकाश टाकला आहे.

जेव्हा मनुष्याला हा वर मिळतो  त्यावेळेस त्याला  हे जीवनातील अंतिम तथ्य नाही याची जाणीव होते. वि.स.खांडेकर यांनी ययाती ह्य पुस्तकात हेच सर्वसामान्यांना सांगितले आहे. ययाती ‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌ह्या  पुस्तकासाठी  वी.स. खांडेकर यांना इ.स. 1960 मध्ये  साहित्य अकादमी पुरस्काराने आणि इ.स. 1974  मध्ये भारतातील  साहित्यासाठीचा  सर्वोच्च

” ज्ञानपीठ पुरस्काराने “   सन्मानित करण्यात आले.

अशाप्रकारे जीवन जगायला शिकवणारे ” ययाती “ हे मला आवडलेले पुस्तक आहे.

'More than a pretty picture book' looks at Door Peninsula's overlooked people, places

The author and photographer wants to show parts of the peninsula that people might miss. a wine-and-cheese presentation will be held june 26..

FISH CREEK - Yes, Kevin O'Donnell's new book about the Peninsula contains lots of photographs of people and places in and around Door County. More than 140 photos, in fact.

But the subjects of the photos in "Behind the Door: Profiles of a Peninsula" aren't the typical subjects one expects to find in a Door County photo book.

Plus, they're not set just in Door County but across the entire Peninsula, meaning there's a little bit of representation for Kewaunee and far northern Brown counties.

And they're accompanied by 29 essays O'Donnell wrote that are matched with the photos.

Which is what O'Donnell aimed for when he started working on the book seven years ago.

"Behind the Door" was self-published by O'Donnell's Glenham Publishing on May 21, and people can check out the result of his large-format, 184-page effort at the official launch of the book Wednesday, June 26 at Write On, Door County, with signed copies for sale, wine and cheese, selected photos on display and readings by O'Donnell.

The Door County resident worked as an engineer in the pharmaceutical industry until retiring in 2018; a book he wrote for the industry won an international Book of the Year award and continues to be used by schools and as a guidebook to vaccine management. His photographs have been featured in publications including Wisconsin’s Great Waterways calendars and the Door County GO Guide, and he had a solo exhibit of 45 of his photos, mostly from Door County, in a Chicago gallery.

His 37 years in the pharma industry led to extensive international travel and kindled his interest in the traditions, cultures and history of the places he visited. That's what he said he's trying to capture for the Peninsula in the photos and essays of his new book.

To do so, O'Donnell said he strived to find people and places off the beaten path – "get off (State) 42 and 57 and travel the byways," he said – that reflected those cultures and histories. As he wrote in the preface to the book, "I mined the obscure rather than the obvious in order to suggest and share with visitors, and others, that there is more to the peninsula than bearded goats on a sod roof, weekend festivals, and fish boils."

He also pointed out that "the peninsula" geographically doesn't start when one gets north of Sturgeon Bay but instead includes portions of Kewaunee and Brown counties, so he wanted to have those areas represented in the book to giver readers a fuller picture of "the peninsula." For example, he feels Southern Door County is especially underrepresented when people talk about the region and its role in local culture and history.

"It's more substantial than just a picture book," O'Donnell said in an interview with the Advocate. "I wanted to create something that, one, was more than just a pretty picture book, and two, was about the entire Peninsula, not just Door County. My intention was to create a book about the Peninsula with regards to the things that maybe most visitors, and even some residents, don't see."

O'Donnell said he started the project with a list of subject ideas, but those sometimes changed organically as he learned more about his originally planned subjects or learned more about various people and places on the Peninsula.

"When I went into this project, I had the idea for it to to be more about people," O'Donnell said, "the five- and six-generation year-rounders with the family farms, the commercial fishermen."

Then, several places and things came into consideration as well. For example, O'Donnell said he happened to look up one day when in the Sturgeon Bay post office and saw a large, 4-by-14-foot mural on the wall above the entrance to the office. He stared at it for a while, and when the postal worker behind the counter asked if he needed anything, he asked her if she knew anything about the painting. Which she didn't.

Turns out the mural is titled “Fruits of Sturgeon Bay," painted in 1940 by Milwaukee-based artist Santos Zingale for one of President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal programs to hire modern artists to create art for public spaces. Zingale was a well-known social realism painter in the day, so the mural is a noteworthy work of art, and O'Donnell highlighted it in his book.

"There've been folks who've lived in Door County for years but have never seen that painting," O"Donnell said.

It's people, places and things like that, that O'Donnell said he's trying to spotlight. The people, places and things that make the Peninsula what it really is,

"This book, I hope, captures with great affection," he wrote in the preface, "a glimpse into the work we embrace, the winters we endure, the nights we marvel, the environment we steward, the traditions we value, the history we cherish, the stories we tell, and the lives we live behind the Door."

The wine-and-cheese reception and launch for Kevin O’Donnell’s "Behind the Door: Profiles of a Peninsula" takes place from 4 to 6 p.m. June 26 at Write On, Door County, 4210 Juddville Road, Fish Creek. O’Donnell will talk about the making of the book and read excerpts from his essays, and photos from the book will be on display. Autographed limited-edition presentation copies of the book and standard editions will be available for sale, with a portion of the proceeds supporting Write On programs.

O'Donnell also will sign copies of the book from 10 a.m. to noon July 6, at Novel Bay Booksellers, 44 N. Third Ave., Sturgeon Bay, one of a handful of Door County shops that are carrying the book.

Beach Reads

We spent a sweltering summer saturday at jacob riis park to get some bookshelf inspiration..

It was one of the first really hot days of the year in New York, and I found myself on a mission. With photographer Yael Malka, I boarded the ferry all the way out to the Rockaways in search of the city’s hottest (outdoor) club: Jacob Riis Park . The beach, already in full summer mode, was packed. Music ranging from EDM beats to disco tunes to J.Lo hits could be heard across the expanse of hot sand and beautiful bodies. Near the shore, someone set up a table labeled “Free Date” in an effort to encourage a hopeful romantic to sit down and wait until another beachgoer joined them. Some people were dancing, some were drinking, many were swimming or sleeping — and several had their noses buried in a book.

On the ferry and at the beach , I spied the book that inspired Killing Eve (Luke Jennings’s Codename Villanelle ), a classic Tolkien trilogy ( Lord of the Rings , anyone?), BookTok sensation Sarah J. Maas ’s Queen of Shadows , a law textbook, A.S. Byatt’s The Little Black Book of Stories , and, of course, the book of the summer: All Fours, by Miranda July . The recommendations we gathered didn’t remotely resemble any summer reading list I’ve seen. Which is exactly why together, they form the Ultimate Summer Reading List, with representation from a range of genres, authors, and even decades. The lesson? Read whatever you want this summer, and don’t worry about having the hottest titles on your shelf. I know I won’t.

“It’s a gift I recently received from a friend,” says Omar. “He said, ‘This will fit you. You’re dark.’ Such a love letter to receive a book. I read Neruda in Arabic, but it was a very bad translation. So now rereading it again, to hear the poet, changes everything. I love him, but he’s a bit mean sometimes. I’m reading very harsh poems, but it is such a beautiful day, so I’m also enjoying this. I understand I’m sitting here in my safety, and at the same time thinking that he was in political exile. I came from political exile; I came from Syria, so I connect with him.”

“I like the author. The way he writes is very interesting — it’s more of an investigation done from several frames,” says Leda. “It’s my third time reading it. It has some more serious topics, so there’s viewer discretion and advisory involved, but I really like it. It definitely keeps you on the edge. And then there’s a twist at the end.”

“I am an aspiring screenwriter. This is the widely accepted textbook of screenwriting. He’s very curmudgeonly, but definitely an expert of his craft,” Hope says. “I usually read it right before bed. It’s pretty boring, so it puts me right to sleep. It’s funny that I’m reading it in the daylight. I keep going to nap and then waking up again. The foundations of the book are the essential foundations of the theory of story, which is Aristotle, and the act structures, and building and releasing tension. It’s cool.”

“It’s cool so far. I just started today. Every chapter is a perspective from a different character, so I’m still very much getting to know the people,” says Clay. “It was on our bookshelf at home. My roommates have read it. The common thread is that they’re all Indigenous people living in Oakland. It seems emotional but interesting. I love an emotional read. It feels very personal, sort of like a diary. It’s not been hard to focus while also listening to the music and noise in the background.”

“They’re really, really beautiful. Some sonnets are of heartbreak, some are of love, and some are empowerment. She’s a great author,” says Katherine. “Each poem is different, so I take a picture of my favorite ones. I definitely recommend page 12. They’re not titled. I read it on the train sometimes. For the moment, for what I’m going through in my personal life, I need it now. I dealt with a little heartbreak recently, so it gives you a little love too, and a little hope that everything’s gonna be okay.”

“My dad actually gave it to me. He read it in Spanish,” says Kevin. “Because it’s in English and Andrés only speaks Spanish, I was translating it as I was reading it to tell him a little bit about what it’s about. It’s good. We only got two pages in because it got too hard. Andrés says that the book sounds really interesting so far. It’s about ways to live a better life, a more peaceful life. You’re at the beach, you’re relaxing; it’s a good way to connect.”

“It’s all about a woman who’s coming out of a traumatic relationship experience and figuring out how to date again. Seems like it’s gonna be an emotional roller coaster,” says Jess. “The writing is really beautiful. It feels very real. I feel like I know these characters in real life. It’s got a lot of the energy of summer, where you’re running around the city and getting into trouble with your friends. It’s New York’s Brooklyn dating scene wrapped up concisely, but also in a real way.”

“I’m about halfway done. It’s about the protests against the World Trade Organization in, I think, 2000. It’s fictional,” says Alex. “It’s lots of different people’s stories who are drawn into the protests, converging together. It’s a coming-of-age story. It’s very fast-paced and an easy, interesting, at times emotional read. I would recommend it. It’s a little intense, but it’s good.”

“It’s been a really compelling beach read. I have, like, 50 pages left, which is exciting. It’s a fun book for summer, and I love Miranda. She’s always writing fascinating stories,” says Genevieve. “It’s been engrossing. I bought it two days after it came out. It reminds me a little bit of some books that I’ve read by Elena Ferrante, and those are often set on the beach, in the summer, but it’s a woman sort of going through it, or going through a crisis in those books, and I really like reading those books in the summer. It’s been strange and delightful.”

“It is a lesbian Western. My job is relatively new, and I’m putting myself out there and participating in things. There’s a thriving queer community at my workplace, and it’s all hyperfemme, which is really fun. This is our book club book,” says Claudia. “I’m from Oklahoma, and my dad is a beef-cattle geneticist, so I grew up around horses and cows and livestock. All his students were literal cowboys and cowgirls. Country-western things make me homesick in a good way. Even just a few pages in, I feel very nostalgic. I’m early on, but I think it’s going to be smutty. Summer reads are great when they’re a little smutty. When I was growing up, anyone with a femme presence was such a throwaway character, and it is very wonderful to read, even in the very start of this book, something where the femme presence is the most complicated and interesting character. It makes me reframe my childhood and what I was able to expect of myself in the stories that I was told.”

“This is actually a reread for me. This book is fantastic. It’s a fantasy — really a roman tasy. It follows a female main character named Oraya,” says Michelle. “She’s going through this world of vampires that are fighting each other, and she’s the human in the middle of it all. She ends up meeting someone, a rival, and there’s a lot of tension. Also, the whole empire is kind of falling apart. I’ve been eating the book up really fast.”

“Now that I’ve finished the Killing Eve TV series, I’m reading the books. So far it’s pretty similar, but I’ve heard that they got pretty different as the books go on,” says Katie. “Which is good, because the TV series was heartbreaking in the end. It’s a little trashy. It’s, like, gay women written by a man, which is always a little suspect. But it’s sexy. It’s fast paced. It’s pretty brainless, so you can pick it up anywhere and be entertained. I usually read the book first, but Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh brought me to the show more than the plot.”

“I found it on an Instagram Reel. It’s by a Palestinian author who is based in Brooklyn. It’s a generational story. The grandparents immigrated to Brooklyn, and the younger-generation girls are figuring out how to live with the cultural differences. I wanted to try to be a little bit more involved in any way I could, and reading was such a good outlet for me. It’s not a fun, ‘let me just ignore all my problems’ book, but it does get you out of your world and your problems, into a totally different world.”

“I just read Kindred and I really enjoyed it, and a friend of mine was like, ‘If you like that, you’ll like this even better.’ So now I’m onto this one,” says Laurel. “The first few pages of Kindred caught me faster, but when hyperempathy got dropped in there, I was like, fascinating . It piqued my interest. Let me pick out some words from the back: anarchy, debilitating sensitivity to others’ emotions, survival. Maybe some tough themes, but I guess tough themes are okay for the beach.”

“It’s a collection of short stories; the one that I just started reading began with a baby being abandoned at a monastery and monks raising this baby, and then when the baby turns 30, she starts working as a washerwoman for this woman, Señora Lucy,” says Grace. “Now it’s going into Señora Lucy’s life, and she’s seemingly a con artist who is in a relationship with another con artist. It’s, like, lesbian con artists enjoying conning people, and that’s where I’ve got to in the book. Her girlfriend has just been accused of murdering her employer. So let’s see where it goes from there. It was on my bookshelf, I was looking for a new book to read, and I hadn’t read this one yet. Short stories are perfect for going to the beach. It’s got intrigue, mystery, romance, crime, everything.”

“Cecilia Gentili is an icon of the Brooklyn trans community who passed away earlier this year. She was an amazing mother. This book is this amazing insight into a really young version of herself who was already embodied in her transness. Someone was clocking something in her that she didn’t even know was there, which is such a part of queerness. And then I’m reading Tarot for Change , by Jessica Dore. Whenever I do tarot, I use this book. She interprets it through a modality of behavioral psychology. Tarot is just a portal through which you can receive information from the universe. This is an amazing book that encourages you to view the tarot through a prism of self-love and compassion. These books feel complementary to the context that we’re in. We’re on the beach, surrounded by so many people, so many top-surgery scars. Being here is a powerful vortex.”

These classic ’60s books shout from the shelves to be read again

Rachel Carson, Jane Jacobs, Harper Lee and others asked provocative, brave questions about many of the same urgent issues we face today.

The National Book Awards will celebrate its 75th anniversary at this year’s ceremony, on Nov. 20. To mark the occasion, The Washington Post has collaborated with the administrator and presenter of the awards, the National Book Foundation, to commission a series of essays by National Book Award-honored authors who will consider (and reconsider), decade by decade, the books that were recognized and those that were overlooked; the preoccupations of authors, readers and the publishing industry through time; the power and subjectivity of judges and of awards; and the lasting importance of books to our culture, from the 1950s to the present day. In this essay, Prudence Peiffer — longlisted for the nonfiction award in 2023 for “ The Slip: The New York City Street That Changed American Art Forever ” — looks back at the 1960s.

“Art hurts. Art urges voyages–/ and it is easier to stay at home,/ the nice beer ready.”

This is poet Gwendolyn Brooks at her best, stinging sentiment followed by a swig of damning, ordinary detail from the fridge. We’ve worked hard for a drink that shuts out the world. The lines are taken from her collection “In the Mecca,” a National Book Award finalist in 1969. An adjacent thought from another poet, Elizabeth Bishop, in “Questions of Travel” (1966 finalist): “Should we have stayed at home and thought of here?”

Writing is both the staying at home and the difficult voyage, which makes it particularly useful for time travel. And from mushrooms to the moon, no decade in the United States is more known for its mind-expanding trips than the 1960s. Despite that era’s iconic male voices (you may have read a few), its women writers have moved me most in influencing my work: Bishop, Brooks, Hannah Arendt, Rachel Carson, Jane Jacobs, Harper Lee, Flannery O’Connor, Susan Sontag — and names that, sadly, don’t ring as loudly today, like Alice Kimball Smith.

With intimate assurance and often radical insight, these authors took up a looming anxiety of the postwar and Cold War era: What does community mean? Another way of asking this is: Where does home end and “elsewhere” begin, and how does that define one’s responsibilities? These were provocative, even brave, questions to pose as a woman in 1960s America; it makes these books that much more relevant and alive to us lucky enough to read them today.

In her environmental cri de coeur “Silent Spring” (1963 finalist), Carson illustrated the interconnectivity of life via unforgettable images, like an owl in convulsions after eating a shrew that in turn ate earthworms that in turn ate decomposed leaves that had fallen from a tree sprayed with chemicals for Dutch elm disease.“Most of us walk unseeing through the world, unaware alike of its beauties, its wonders, and the strange and sometimes terrible intensity of the lives that are being lived about us,” Carson wrote. She was describing how, venturing out into the garden at night with a flashlight, we’d be amazed and horrified at the vicious balance of nature. But that sentence could just as easily have come from Jacobs’s “The Death and Life of Great American Cities” (1962 finalist), in which Jacobs argued that we need to understand and celebrate urban complexity, and make sure that complexity is not demolished in the name of profits for the few. A city needs to be for everybody, but also: Everybody makes a city great.

I’m struck by how these classics from Carson and Jacobs can be read in succession as pendant volumes of community activism. In that era of fervent capitalist nation-building, they were daring warnings of democracy’s fragility, the importance of living with and trusting strangers. Carson’s most radical move was calling out a different kind of life cycle, one in which scientists’ research was funded by the very industry their findings were supposed to regulate.

It wasn’t just nonfiction writers who captured the “strange and sometimes terrible intensity” of the lives around us. That’s also reflected with cold brilliance in O’Connor’s “Everything That Rises Must Converge” (1966 finalist), her blunt portrait of the rural South. (Bishop almost made a pilgrimage to see O’Connor in Milledgeville, Ga., where the writer famously lived on a farm with her peacocks, but timing thwarted the visit; instead, Bishop sent her a cross in a bottle.) Like so many of the writers in this remarkable decade, O’Connor showed people in a rapidly changing landscape where a community is under threat. She knew a good title and she always stuck the landing, often with a violent death that shattered a character’s self-righteousness. I’ve never flinched so much while reading. She spared no one, including herself, if unintentionally: We can feel O’Connor working through her questions about the fallibility of her White, Catholic views, which maintained their own ingrained bigotry. What does it mean to be a good Christian when everyone’s life feels preordained? Published just a year after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the ban on segregation, “Everything That Rises” is a reminder of racism’s rooted legacy in daily thinking — our most intimate language — especially in characters who are trying to perform a kind of morality. Scenes like the one on the bus in the title story, or in the doctor’s waiting room in “Revelation,” are primers for the barbarous truth that can hide in idle conversation.

O’Connor famously called Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird” (1961 finalist) a children’s book. (It’s true that it has maintained its central place in the national consciousness through its pervasiveness on high school reading lists, and some of its most powerful scenes take place in the schoolyard.) Though its tone could not be more different than “Everything That Rises,” it’s also a work of fiction teeming with neighborhood life in the still-segregated South and concerned with our moral responsibilities to the community around us. The judgment in Lee’s book is tied more to the law and its democratic processes than to the Bible, but Lee gives Atticus Finch a radically empathetic vision of religious intensity.

Defining and modeling empathy around community had different stakes for different writers. “In the Mecca” was a fulcrum for Brooks: It was her final book with a major trade publisher before she chose to work only with smaller, Black-run presses — a powerful statement coming from a Pulitzer Prize winner who had just been appointed poet laureate of Illinois. Like Jacobs’s book, “In the Mecca” is about the death of American cities (here, Chicago) through neglect, racism and poor planning, but also about the life in them, through their people and art.

Arendt’s “Men in Dark Times” (1969 finalist) ties community to responsibility, or our knowing turn away from it: “More and more people in the countries of the Western world, which since the decline of the ancient world has regarded freedom from politics as one of the basic freedoms, make use of this freedom and have retreated from the world and their obligations within it,” she wrote. In arguing for the necessity of a community of thinkers in the worst of times, Arendt read across media and history, a dexterity of thinking shared by Sontag, who embraced the Doors and Dostoevsky. Both Arendt and Sontag describe what is happening in plain sight and language, the “luminousness of the thing in itself,” as Sontag describes it, “of things being what they are.” Sontag identified the bliss in aesthetics; she claimed to see a film a day during this decade. Her essay collection “Against Interpretation” (1967 finalist) is brimming with evenings out experiencing things, followed by evenings in describing them (including a merry takedown of Ernest Hemingway). Her sentences are alive with unresolved, still-in-process thinking; the collection ends just before she turned to writing against the Vietnam War.

Arendt’s thought was rooted in World War II and the culture it arrested, the future conflicts it had already failed to stem. In her essay on the German writer Walter Benjamin, exiled from his home country by war, Arendt seems to implicitly pick up Jacobs’s treatise on the importance of a city’s sidewalk life, extending the strangers we meet there to the homeless and stateless who might still find some place to gather. When Arendt writes that technology has made surprising communities, so that every country is “the almost immediate neighbor of every other country, and every man feels the shock of events which take place at the other side of the globe,” social media is the premonition. She, of course, is talking about atomic weapons.

One of the more fascinating and now less-known books of this era is Alice Kimball Smith’s “A Peril and a Hope” (1966 finalist), which examines, sometimes in hour-by-hour detail, how scientists involved in the Manhattan Project tried to manage the impact of the nuclear bomb during its development and in the years just following its use in World War II. (Smith later co-edited an anthology of Robert Oppenheimer’s letters.) Her book is ultimately about the failure of two distinct communities — science and politics — to find a common language through which to understand each other. Though scientists were not in consensus, many of them wanted the United States to be transparent with other countries about its nuclear capabilities — the original hope was that the mere demonstration of an atomic bomb, like the test in the Nevada desert, would persuade our enemies to surrender. Where does home end and the “other” begin?

I admire the small but profound choices of emphasis these writers made. In “Silent Spring,” Carson gave “housewives” the same weight as scientists, citing numerous letters they wrote to newspapers, town councils and ornithologists noting the effects of insecticides and weed killers on wildlife in their neighborhoods. Women may have barely been represented among the scientists employed in the atomic project, but that didn’t stop Smith from writing that community’s definitive story. (Despite having earned a doctorate, Smith is still mostly identified as the wife of one of the Manhattan Project scientists, underscoring why she was better positioned than most to understand the perils of secrecy. Her book is out of print and difficult to access, even in libraries.)

The 1960s cemented a certain intellectual curiosity and urgency around the environment, race and war, subjects that remain the sources of the deepest schisms in our communities. It’s hard not to feel these books shouting from the shelves to be read again for what they can tell us about their time and our own, as the present continuously, swiftly becomes history. Think of microplastics in our water and forever chemicals in our organic salads; the “epidemic” of loneliness diagnosed by the surgeon general, whose recommended treatment directly maps to Jacobs’s prescriptions for a city block; the ongoing racism across the country that turns back small gains made since 2020; Russia’s investment in atomic satellites and deployment of “tactical” nuclear weapons; the uprooting, starvation and death of tens of thousands of children in Gaza and elsewhere.

These writers have shown me that it’s better to step into the mire, to be not at peace with the world but constantly making something of it. That something can be small and local. It can be beautiful and pleasurable in spite of — even because of — what is at stake. Or as Brooks put it, “Conduct your blooming in the noise and whip of the/ whirlwind.”

Hillary Clinton to release essay collection about personal and public life

Hillary Clinton’s next book is a collection of essays, touching upon everything from marriage to politics to faith, that her publisher is calling her most personal yet.

Simon and Schuster announced Tuesday that Clinton’s “Something Lost, Something Gained: Reflections on Life, Love and Liberty” will be released Sept. 17.

Among the topics she will cover: Her marriage to former President Bill Clinton, her Methodist faith, adjusting to private life after her failed presidential runs, her friendships with other first ladies and her takes on climate change, democracy and Vladimir Putin.

“The book reads like you’re sitting down with your smartest, funniest, most passionate friend over a long meal,” Clinton’s editor, Priscilla Painton, said in a statement.

“This is the Hillary Americans have come to know and love: candid, engaged, humorous, self-deprecating — and always learning.”

Clinton, the former first lady, U.S. senator and secretary and presidential candidate, will promote her book with a cross country tour. “Something Lost, Something Gained” comes out two months before Bill Clinton’s memoir about post-presidential life, “Citizen.”

Financial terms were not disclosed. Clinton was represented by Washington attorney Robert Barnett, whose other clients have included former President George W. Bush and former President Barack Obama.

Clinton’s previous books include such bestsellers as “It Takes a Village,” “Living History” and “What Happened.”

A Year on Ozempic Taught Me We’re Thinking About Obesity All Wrong

Ever since I was a teenager, I have dreamed of shedding a lot of weight. So when I shrank from 203 pounds to 161 in a year, I was baffled by my feelings. I was taking Ozempic, and I was haunted by the sense that I was cheating and doing something immoral.

I’m not the only one. In the United States (where I now split my time), over 70 percent of people are overweight or obese, and according to one poll, 47 percent of respondents said they were willing to pay to take the new weight-loss drugs. It’s not hard to see why. They cause users to lose an average of 10 to 20 percent of their body weight, and clinical trials suggest that the next generation of drugs (probably available soon) leads to a 24 percent loss, on average. Yet as more and more people take drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro, we get more confused as a culture, bombarding anyone in the public eye who takes them with brutal shaming.

This is happening because we are trapped in a set of old stories about what obesity is and the morally acceptable ways to overcome it. But the fact that so many of us are turning to the new weight-loss drugs can be an opportunity to find a way out of that trap of shame and stigma — and to a more truthful story.

In my lifetime, obesity has exploded, from being rare to almost being the norm. I was born in 1979, and by the time I was 21, obesity rates in the United States had more than doubled . They have skyrocketed since. The obvious question is, why? And how do these new weight-loss drugs work? The answer to both lies in one word: satiety. It’s a concept that we don’t use much in everyday life but that we’ve all experienced at some point. It describes the sensation of having had enough and not wanting any more.

The primary reason we have gained weight at a pace unprecedented in human history is that our diets have radically changed in ways that have deeply undermined our ability to feel sated. My father grew up in a village in the Swiss mountains, where he ate fresh, whole foods that had been cooked from scratch and prepared on the day they were eaten. But in the 30 years between his childhood and mine, in the suburbs of London, the nature of food transformed across the Western world. He was horrified to see that almost everything I ate was reheated and heavily processed. The evidence is clear that the kind of food my father grew up eating quickly makes you feel full. But the kind of food I grew up eating, much of which is made in factories, often with artificial chemicals, left me feeling empty and as if I had a hole in my stomach. In a recent study of what American children eat, ultraprocessed food was found to make up 67 percent of their daily diet. This kind of food makes you want to eat more and more. Satiety comes late, if at all.

One scientific experiment — which I have nicknamed Cheesecake Park — seemed to me to crystallize this effect. Paul Kenny, a neuroscientist at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, grew up in Ireland. After he moved in 2000 to the United States, when he was in his 20s, he gained 30 pounds in two years. He began to wonder if the American diet has some kind of strange effect on our brains and our cravings, so he designed an experiment to test it. He and his colleague Paul Johnson raised a group of rats in a cage and gave them an abundant supply of healthy, balanced rat chow made out of the kind of food rats had been eating for a very long time. The rats would eat it when they were hungry, and then they seemed to feel sated and stopped. They did not become fat.
