The Best Wedding Speeches for When You Need Tears, Hugs, or LOLs

Can we talk about the cute kid in #5?

wedding party standing together

A few weeks ago when we wrote fourteen tips for slaying at your wedding speech , I started to get curious about what wedding speeches actually exist on the Internet. As a wedding photographer, I’ve seen more than my fair share of best man speeches, maid of honor speeches, adorable parent speeches, even a handful of wedding speeches from kids (which will make me cry a hundred percent of the time). But I’ve never actually gone down the rabbit hole of Internet viral wedding toasts.

Here’s what I have learned: any wedding speech video that says “You have GOT to see this!!!!!” is lying. Also, a lot of wedding speeches are a “you had to be there” kind of thing—not that they aren’t funny, but the humor doesn’t always translate to strangers on the Internet.

Having said that, it’s important to note that most wedding speeches are really similar—and that is completely fine. Sure, some of the ones linked below are a-maz-ing, but guys: I don’t think most people expect you to sing. If you watch these and are inspired to mix up your speech a little, remember to play to your strengths (and maybe don’t get hammered). For example, in one of the videos below, family members gathered to slow jam the toast a la Jimmy Fallon… but it turns out one of those family members used to have her own popular YouTube channel.

TL;DR: when it comes to wedding speeches, keep it fun, light, and packed with all the feelings that you feel. The rest will (most likely) fall into place. Let’s get inspired.

1. The Pop culture mash-up

This sister/maid of honor decided to use a pop culture mash-up to review the bride’s entire life. The story goes like this: their mom decided the best way to get her eight-days-late baby Earthside was to have a days-long dance party… and it worked. The best part of this? The reactions of the bride and groom. Yaaaassss.

2. There’s a BeyoncĂ© song in this one

The groom’s brothers decided that singing their speech was really the best way to go, and chose a handful of songs (including “Hero” by Enrique Iglesias and “Single Ladies” by Bey) to express all their feels. It’s not a hundred percent funny and I could do without the wigs, but their hearts are in the right place (and it’s just over five minutes).

3. Slow Jam the toast

Are you guys familiar with Jimmy Fallon’s slow jamming of the news? (If not, one of my recent faves is this one with Barack Obama .) Well, the maid of honor, the bride’s cousin, and the bride’s brother all decided they wanted to slow jam the wedding toast… and I kind of love it.

4. The drunk friends who can’t remember why it’s great their friends got married

The guy who kicks off this one says he’s “not really good for emotions” but come on, y’all look at that bottle. He’s great, and the group “Awwwwws” are even better. The group then also redoes the wedding, and other drunk people continue to give toasts throughout the ten (!) minutes this plays. Fair warning: there’s a lot of language, drunkenness, and references to drugs.

5. the kid with the cute accent

Okay, this one was included because (a) the bride’s eleven-year-old is giving the speech, (b) he references her over-parenting and it made me laugh, and (c) OMG GUYS HIS ACCENT IS SO PRECIOUS DIE.

Do you know of a great (or terrible) wedding speech that isn’t here? Share it!

How To Write a Short Wedding Speech

With this guide, you can create short and sweet wedding speeches that will just flow organically. Write a killer speech that would be easy to read and will convey your love for the couple perfectly.

  • Remember who is in the audience: Whether you are giving short wedding speeches as the best man or groom, it is important to keep your audience in mind. Introduce yourself and acknowledge them. Focusing on the audience and engaging them will help you speak from the heart.
  • Avoid alcohol: While getting some liquid courage can be tempting, it is best to lay off the alcohol until after your speech. Alcohol could turn short funny wedding speeches into something long and nonsensical. This is because you might slur or forget your words under the influence, and this is something you absolutely do not want.
  • Use note cards: Although you are not encouraged to read out your short wedding rehearsal dinner speech completely, note cards are encouraged. With these cues, you can glance at your notes from time to time to help you remember your lines and keep you on track. The audience might not even notice, and your speech would be better for it.
  • Structure your story: Structure your speech in a way that focuses on the bride and groom. Fine one, two or three points about them that you can elaborate upon and stories in which they are the hero. This will keep your message in the right direction, and you can be sure to end on a positive note.

In the next part, we have a list of some of the best short wedding speeches that can help inspire you to write your own.

Example of a Short Wedding Toast

“Cheers to [Couple’s Names]! May your days be filled with love, laughter, and countless joyous moments. Here’s to a lifetime of happiness together!”

How to Make a Short and Sweet Wedding Speech

Focus on key points like expressing happiness for the couple, sharing a brief anecdote, and offering a toast. Keep it concise, heartfelt, and light-hearted for impact.

Is a 1 Minute Wedding Speech Too Short?

No, a 1-minute wedding speech can be perfect. A concise speech ensures guests stay engaged and leaves a lasting impression. Focus on the essentials – expressing joy, sharing a quick story, and toasting the couple.

Not many people are trained public speakers, but it is hard to go wrong with short wedding speeches. Allow these tips and examples to guide you in making the best wedding speeches ever.

Someone you love is getting married, and you’ve just been asked to give a speech at the wedding. What an honor! But also, if you’re not used to giving speeches, what a nightmare! Public speaking can be scary , which is why many people prefer to avoid it. But when your bestie asks you to make a speech at his or her wedding, it’s time to rally. But now you’re wondering if you even know how to write a wedding speech! What makes some wedding speeches fun and memorable, and what makes others cringy and fall flat? We’ve got you. We’ve put together the ultimate guide for how to write a wedding speech, focusing on things you definitely should do, things you definitely should NOT do, and then how to deliver your killer wedding speech like a pro.

If you’re wondering how to write a wedding speech, here are a few “Do’s” to keep in mind.

  • Start planning early
  • Introduce yourself and how you know the bride and groom
  • Thanks to hosts, guests, and wedding party; congratulate the couple
  • Make it personal
  • Think of 3 traits with 3 stories
  • Talk about the couple
  • Have a beginning, middle, and end
  • Consider your audience
  • Keep it short and sweet
  • It’s okay to be simple and meaningful

1. Start planning early

If you don’t know how to write a wedding speech but the bride just asked you to give one, this is not a time to procrastinate. Public speaking is one of the number one fears many people have, so it’s likely you’ve avoided giving too many public speeches before this. And unless you’re a performer or a veteran improv comedian, you might not do too well winging this one. If you get nervous in front of an audience (as most of us do), the best defense against freezing up when you take the mic is being prepared.

As soon as you know you’ve been asked to give a speech at the wedding, begin jotting down notes immediately. Whenever you’re inspired by a thought of the couple or remember an anecdote that might be worth retelling, make note of it. This will help to give you a pool of ideas to draw from when you start writing down the speech.

Begin gathering ideas and writing the speech a couple of weeks to a month before the wedding. You’ll need time to edit, fine-tune it, and make it concise. And as wedding showers, bachelorette parties, and other wedding festivities begin, you might find there are entertaining stories from these events you want to add as well. If you want to write it all at once, you can do that too. However, make sure to sleep on it and come back with fresh eyes. You don’t want just “okay,” you want your speech to be heartfelt and meaningful.

You will also want to begin early to give yourself time to practice and rehearse your speech plenty of times.

2. Introduce yourself and how you know the bride and groom

No matter how large or small the wedding is, it’s likely you will not be familiar with many of the guests on one or both sides. And they won’t be familiar with you either. So don’t leave them guessing!

Make sure when you start to write a wedding speech to introduce yourself and mention how you know the couple. This will help them understand the context of your speech, which will also help it to be more well-received.

3. Thank hosts, guests, and wedding party; congratulate the couple

It’s also courteous to take this time to thank the hosts and other members of the wedding party for all the hard work that went into the event, and to thank guests for being there to support the newlyweds, especially those who had to travel far.

It’s also a good time to officially congratulate the newlyweds and offer them your personal well-wishes for their future. It is imperative that you don’t forget this part, because they are the whole reason you’re there and giving a speech!

4. Make it personal

Whether you are the maid of honor, the best man, father of the bride, or just a friend, you were asked to give a speech because of your close connection and relationship with either the bride or groom (or both).

And since you know your friend as well as you do, you probably have plenty of stories to share; so the next tip for how to write a wedding speech is don’t hesitate to make it personal and share those stories! This will also help guests get to know the other half of the couple they might not know as well or are just meeting for the first time. And those guests who do know them will love hearing some entertaining stories they might not have heard yet.

5. Think of 3 traits with 3 stories

If you’re finding it difficult to come up with anything, a useful approach for how to write a wedding speech is to think of 3 positive defining traits or qualities of the bride or groom and recount three stories or examples that illuminate a time they exhibited these traits. These stories could be comedic, heartwarming, or both. Just make sure they are relevant and entertaining!

6. Talk about the couple

If you’re the maid of honor and have been chatting up the bride for the whole speech, part of how to write a wedding speech is to make sure at some point it circles around to the groom, too, and to the two of them as a couple.

Recount the time you met him, or how you remember talking about him with the bride in the beginning stages of their relationship. If you don’t know the groom all that well, talk about how good they are as a couple and about how happy he makes her.

And If you’re not a fan of the groom, this is not the time to air your grievances. Always keep it positive.

7. Have a beginning, middle, and end

All good speeches have a good flow and take the audience along with it.

Don’t let your speech fall flat or jumble together in a haphazard confusion of disconnected anecdotes. Give it the structure of an overarching theme, with a beginning, a middle, and an end.

We are not talking about a novel here, just make sure there is a direction to where the speech is going, and that the destination, end, or sentiment is achieved. It doesn’t need to be Charlie Chaplin in The Great Dictator, but a three-act structure does help keep you grounded. Most people also follow a story easier when there is a clear direction for a story or speech.

8. Consider your audience

The next thing to keep in mind when considering how to write a wedding speech is to make sure you consider who your audience is.

This is not the bachelor or bachelorette party. There will be a wide range of people present from children to the elderly, and from close friends of the bride and groom to casual acquaintances and coworkers. Make sure your speech is free of any crudeness that might not be fit for such a varied audience. Also, this isn’t the time to take a shot at any of the religious cermonies.

Be considerate and keep it positive and use language everyone can relate to.

9. Keep it short and sweet

You want your speech to be meaningful and memorable; but the wedding is not about you, and yours is not the only speech.

No one ever complains about a speech being too short, but they do begin to grumble if it runs on too long. A good rule of thumb to keep in mind when figuring out how to write a wedding speech is to keep your speech between 2-5 minutes long. Any longer than 5 minutes and you’ll lose everyone to thoughts of cake and whether or not to Cupid Shuffle later.

10. Add humor

Don’t be afraid to be funny! Another tip for how to write a wedding speech is that if you’ve got a lighthearted, creative, joking side, use it and add humor to your speech! Everyone likes to be entertained.

This doesn’t mean you should scour the internet for generic wedding-themed jokes, but if you’ve got some good original material to use that helps relate a story about the bride or groom in a comedic way, do it. As long as you’re not making fun of the couple but having fun with them, jokes are great. Or you can even poke fun at yourself to illuminate a higher quality in your bestie. It’s all about making the newlyweds shine.

If you’re creative and have other talents, use them! If you are musical, bust out your instrument and/or vocal cords and make the speech in the form of a song! Use props, and get the other guests involved! The newlyweds will feel special because you created something for them, and the guests will love joining in the fun.

11. It’s okay to be simple and meaningful

If entertaining isn’t your thing, that’s okay! Don’t force it – just be yourself. It’s okay to be simple and meaningful with your speech. Always keep in mind when you go to write a wedding speech that what’s important is that you are genuine and speak from the heart.

Hopefully, you found these tips for how to write a wedding speech helpful, and can start writing today! And stay tuned to our blog for the next part in this ultimate guide for how to write a wedding speech where we highlight a few things you should definitely avoid.

(*Of course, if you’re looking for more than ‘advice’, check out all the different ways the Speechy team can help you write & deliver a great speech. Or check out our new AI-powered team member, SpeechyAI .)

The Surprising Wedding Speech

We love hearing a speech from someone who isn’t part of the usual line up.

One couple asked the bride’s 84-year-old grandad to say a few words. They didn’t want him to get stressed about giving a formal speech so simply asked him to reveal his top five tips for a happy marriage. On the day he made everyone smile with a perfect mix of cheek, insight and nonsense. One of his tips included ‘no number twos in front of each other’. Even the best man couldn’t have gotten away with that.

Kids are also a great way to add humour to the speeches, as well as the cute factor. Get them to give you marriage advice too. We guarantee it will be priceless.

The Joint Speech

Whether it’s a bride and groom speech or a same-sex speech – joint speeches are a wedding trend that’s set to stay. It’s a great way of saying, BOOM, we’re a team. And who doesn’t love a double act?

It also makes a lot of sense – you  both  get to thank your friends and family, and you can practise without feeling the need to hide away in a cupboard.

Find out how to write and deliver a joint speech.

The Funny Wedding Speech

Of course, all speeches should be funny but some stand out.

One of the funniest speeches we’ve heard was a head-to-head between the best man and maid of honour where they debated who had lost the better friend. The bride and groom were then pitted against each other in different categories like ‘drinking ability’, ‘DIY skills’ and ‘comedic appearance’. The fact the best man and maid of honour couldn’t stop laughing throughout the speech only added to the comedy.

Read our blog on how to write a truly funny speech without resorting to Google gags.

The Heartfelt Wedding Speech

best wedding speeches of all time

Guests want tears (they’re demanding like that) and it’s great to have an emotional epicentre to the day.

Careful though, a sentimental speech should NOT contain any clichés and platitudes. It needs to be genuine and unique.

One of the sweetest speeches we’ve heard was a dad who delivered a speech that was less than three minutes long. He didn’t bother giving us a chronological rundown of his daughter’s achievements – instead, he cut straight to the chase and listed the reasons he loved her.

Those insights included ‘tolerating my love of Bruce Springstein in the car’, ‘buying me a nose trimmer’, and ‘making me smile whenever you come home’. It was one of our favourite ever speeches.

The Revealing Wedding Speech

We love a speech which lets everyone in on a secret. One bride got everyone smiling (and a few people crying) when, during her speech, she called a waiter over, requested a cheese toastie with peanut butter and revealed to the guests that she was three months pregnant.

Obviously conceiving is a bit much when it comes to gathering good content but there are other options. A classic was the groom who confessed to his in-laws that he’d been seeing their daughter for six months prior to them knowing. He then amused the audience with tales of his undercover antics, even managing to get the in-laws laughing too!

The Spontaneous ‘Speech’

best wedding speeches of all time

We’ve been to a couple of weddings which haven’t had any formal speeches but have been inspired by countries where everyone is welcomed to give a toast throughout the meal.

It’s a fun idea which allows everyone to get involved without anyone feeling under pressure. People can choose to be sentimental or funny but every speech is short and sweet. Warning – it can become rather raucous the more alcohol is consumed!

The 10 Best Wedding Speeches From Movies Of All-Time

Let's lift our glasses to these classic movie toasts.

  • Alexandra Churchill

Last updated on Nov 17, 2023

Group of friends having a wedding toast

The toast: It's one of — no, scratch that — it is the best part of any wedding. The best man shares embarrassing stories of the groom from their college days, the maid of honor recalls fond memories of her childhood spent with the bride playing dress-up, parents get choked up and everyone lifts their glasses to wish the happy newlyweds a happily ever after.

Of course, if you've ever been to a wedding, you'll also know how funny, heartfelt or even, dare we say, wacky wedding toast ideas can be.

So naturally, toasts have made for some great Hollywood scenes. After all, remember that scene in My Best Friend's Wedding when Julia Roberts begs for groom Michael O'Neal to love her back? Or that other scene in Bridesmaids when Kristen Wiig toasts her best friend and bride-to-be Maya Rudolph in Spanish (random)?

Let's lift our glasses to some of these classic favorites...

Here are the top 10 best wedding speeches from movies of all time:

1. my best friend's wedding.

"I had the strangest dream. I dreamed that some psychopath was trying to break the two of you up. Luckily, I woke up, and I see that the world is just as it should be. For my best friend ... has won the best woman."

OK, so Julianne (Julia Roberts) wasn't the best of best friends in this rom-com. After her embarrassingly desperate attempt to break up her best friend's wedding, she raises a glass to the newlyweds with her sincerest apologies.

2. Bridesmaids

"Lillian and I took Spanish together in school. And so, I would just like to say to you and to everyone here, 'Gracias para vivar en la casa, en la escuelas, en... en la azul... markada. Tienes con bibir en las fortuashla and gracias."

The craziness never seemed to end for bride-to-be Lillian (Maya Rudolph), maid of (dis)honor Annie (Kristen Wiig) and their entourage of ladies, between getting kicked off an airline en route to a bachelorette party, Mexican food poisoning, dress shopping (gone terribly, terribly wrong) and Annie's freakout at the bridal shower.

But, in the end, they still tied the knot and the friendship between the BFFs smoothed out.

3. Four Weddings and A Funeral

"I am as ever in bewildered awe of anyone who this kind of commitment that Angus and Laure have made today. I know I couldn't do it and I think it's wonderful they can."

Charles (Hugh Grant) and Carrie (Andie McDowell) always run into each other at weddings (four, actually if you couldn't guess from the title ... plus one funeral). It's the classic case of having a strong but fleeting connection with a stranger.

And if you ever doubted Hugh Grant as an on-screen charmer, you need to watch his speech as best man.

4. The Deer Hunter

The Deer Hunter, which by genre is really more of a war drama, isn't exactly what comes to mind when you think of weddings. But there is a subtle love story in the movie between Mike (Robert De Niro) and his friend Nick's girlfriend Linda (Meryl Streep).

At a friend's wedding reception, Mike and the guys get drunk, having a good time. That's when they notice a soldier dressed in uniform sitting at the bar who gives what is probably the best two-line wedding toast ever.

5. Wedding Crashers

"True love is the soul's recognition of its counterpoint in another."

We can't help but secretly love the womanizing duo of John (Owen Wilson) and Jeremy (Vince Vaughn). Among all the other rules in their bro code, they steadfastly stick to Rule #5: Never let a girl get between you and a fellow Crasher .

But when they sneak into one wedding where John falls in love with Claire (Rachel McAdams), that rule gets put to the test. And Claire's too-sweet toast kinda seals the deal.

6. The 5-Year Engagement

"This is supposed to be exciting. It's your wedding — you only get a few of these!"

It was a long, long, (really long) walk down the aisle for Tom (Jason Segel) and his girlfriend Violet (Emily Blunt). And this slideshow at their engagement party made things even more awkward.

7. The Hangover 2

"That was a great speech, sir. I liked the comparisons between Stu and rice."

There's always that one guy — whether it's his drunk uncle or your weirdo cousin — who just doesn't have a clue when it comes to social etiquette. If you thought anyone in your family was awkward, this should make you feel a whole lot better. (Trust us, you aren't alone.)

8. My Big Fat Greek Wedding

"We're all different, but in the end, we're all fruit."

It took a little while for the Portokalos family to warm up to Toula's (Nia Vardalos) fiancé Ian (John Corbett), but her father Gus (Michael Constantine) breaks down the cultural differences between them in one sweet, beautifully simple analogy.

9. The Wedding Singer

"Harold ain't so perfect. Remember that time in Puerto Rico when we picked up those two... well, I guess they were prostitutes, but I don't remember paying."

Even after being stood up at the altar on his wedding day, Robbie Hart (Adam Sandler) never gave up on love. (Heck, what kind of wedding singer would he be if he didn't?)

When he befriends and inevitably falls for a waitress named Julia (Drew Barrymore), he won't let love get away a second time, so he performs a song on the plane she's boarding. But before that, at a wedding he's performing for, the groom's drunk brother gets on stage to make a pretty awkward speech. (Drunk, of course.)

10. Sex And The City (The Movie)

"In our group, we never kiss and tell..."

Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) really needs no introduction, does she? She's the fictional expert on love and relationships. So what do you say as a toast to the greatest love of her life ? Take cues from BFF Samantha:

Wedding Speeches: How to Write and Deliver a Memorable Toast

best wedding speeches of all time

Wedding speeches are an important tradition that adds a personal touch to the wedding celebration. They allow loved ones to share their feelings and memories, express gratitude, and wish the newlyweds a lifetime of happiness. However, with the rising trend of online marriages due to the ongoing pandemic, wedding speeches have taken on a new form. Online marriages refer to weddings that take place virtually, with the couple and their guests participating from different locations through video conferencing platforms.

In this post, we will discuss how to write and deliver a memorable toast, both for in-person and virtual weddings.

Who gives speeches at a wedding?

At a traditional wedding, certain people are expected to give speeches. These people include the father of the bride, the best man, and the maid of honor.

Here is a breakdown of the traditional roles of speech givers at a wedding:

  • Father of the Bride: This speech is typically the first one given, and it sets the tone for the rest of the speeches. The father of the bride welcomes the guests, thanks them for coming, and talks about his daughter and his relationship with her. He will usually end the speech by toasting the newlyweds.
  • Groom: The groom will usually give a speech after the father of the bride. He thanks everyone for coming, talks about his bride and their relationship, and thanks her parents for their support. He will usually end the speech by toasting his bride.
  • Best Man: The best man is responsible for giving the final speech of the night. He will typically start by thanking the groom for choosing him as his best man. He will then share stories about the groom, including some embarrassing ones, and end by toasting the newlyweds.
  • Maid of Honor: The maid of honor will typically give a speech after the groom. She will thank the bride for choosing her as her maid of honor, share stories about the bride, and offer advice for a happy marriage. She will also usually end by toasting the newlyweds.

However, more modern variations have emerged over the years, and other people may give speeches at a wedding as well. These could include the mother of the bride, the bride herself, the groom's parents, or close friends of the couple. It's important to keep in mind the wishes of the couple and to ensure that all speeches are appropriate and in good taste.

Tips for Writing a great wedding speech

Here are some tips to help you write a great wedding speech:

  • Prepare and Practice: Don't wait until the last minute to start writing your speech. Give yourself plenty of time to prepare and practice. Write down your thoughts and ideas, and then organize them into a logical structure. Practice delivering your speech several times, either by yourself or in front of a trusted friend or family member.
  • Structure Your Speech: A great wedding speech typically follows a basic structure. Start with an attention-grabbing opening that will capture the audience's attention. Then, move on to the body of your speech, where you will share your thoughts, stories, and advice. Finally, end with a memorable conclusion and a toast to the newlyweds.
  • Keep it Positive: A wedding is a joyous occasion, so keep your speech positive and uplifting. Share stories that celebrate the love and happiness of the couple, and offer words of encouragement and support.
  • Use Humor Wisely: Humor can be a great way to connect with the audience and lighten the mood, but be careful not to go overboard. Avoid jokes that are inappropriate or offensive, and keep in mind that what may be funny to you may not be funny to everyone.
  • Share Personal Anecdotes: Personal anecdotes are a great way to personalize your speech and connect with the couple and the audience. Share stories that highlight the couple's strengths and unique qualities, and that demonstrate the love and support they have for each other.
  • Avoid Sensitive Topics: Avoid topics that may be sensitive or controversial, such as politics, religion, or past relationships. Stick to positive and uplifting messages that celebrate the love and happiness of the couple.

Tips for delivering a great wedding speech

Here are some tips to help you deliver a memorable speech with confidence:

  • Manage Your Nerves: It's normal to feel nervous before giving a speech, but there are techniques you can use to manage your nerves. Take some deep breaths, visualize a positive outcome, and remind yourself that the audience is there to support you.
  • Project Your Voice: Make sure you speak clearly and project your voice so that everyone in the audience can hear you. Take your time, speak at a moderate pace, and avoid rushing through your speech.
  • Maintain Eye Contact: Maintain eye contact with the audience to help build a connection with them. Look around the room and make eye contact with different people, but avoid staring at one person for too long.
  • Use Pauses: Using pauses can help you emphasize key points and give the audience time to digest what you're saying. Don't be afraid to take a moment to gather your thoughts and take a breath before continuing.
  • Vary Your Tone: Varying your tone can help you keep the audience engaged and prevent your speech from sounding monotonous. Use inflection to emphasize key points, and adjust your tone to match the mood of the moment.
  • Practice, Practice, Practice: The more you practice your speech, the more confident you'll feel on the day of the wedding. Practice in front of a mirror, record yourself or give your speech to a trusted friend or family member for feedback.

Common questions

What is the best time during the wedding for speeches?

Traditionally, speeches are given after the meal and before the cutting of the cake. This allows everyone to enjoy their food and drinks before the speeches begin and also ensures that the speeches do not run too late into the night. However, some couples may choose to have speeches earlier in the evening or during the reception, depending on their personal preference.

How long should a wedding speech be?

The length of a wedding speech can vary, but generally, it should be no longer than 5-7 minutes. This allows enough time to deliver a heartfelt message or share a few humorous anecdotes without losing the attention of the audience.

Is it okay to use humor in a wedding speech?

Yes, it is perfectly fine to use humor in a wedding speech, as long as it is appropriate and not at the expense of anyone present. However, it's important to balance humor with sincere sentiments, so that the speech doesn't become too light-hearted or frivolous.

What should I do if I forget my speech during delivery?

If you forget your speech during delivery, take a deep breath and try to remain calm. You can take a moment to gather your thoughts, look down at your notes (if you have them), or ask someone to prompt you with a question. If all else fails, you can simply speak from the heart and express your feelings in your own words.

How can I involve the audience in my speech?

One way to involve the audience in your speech is to ask them a question or invite them to participate in a brief activity. For example, you could ask them to raise their glasses for a toast or have them shout out a particular phrase or response at certain points in your speech.

How do I end a wedding speech?

A good way to end a wedding speech is to offer a message of congratulations or well wishes to the happy couple. You can also thank them for the opportunity to speak and express your gratitude to those who helped make the wedding day special. Finally, you can invite everyone to join you in raising a glass for a final toast to the newlyweds.

Online Marriage with Courtly

In recent years, online marriage has emerged as a popular alternative to traditional in-person weddings. Online marriage allows couples to legally tie the knot without the need for physical presence in a courthouse or a place of worship. One platform that has garnered a lot of attention for its online marriage services is Courtly. We offer customizable ceremonies, licensed officiants, and a virtual marriage license, making the entire process streamlined and efficient.

Couples can choose from a range of ceremony options, including secular, religious, and interfaith ceremonies. Furthermore, we offer additional services such as wedding planning, premarital counseling, and online resources to help couples prepare for their big day.

One of the key benefits of online marriage with Courtly is convenience. Couples can get married from the comfort of their own home, without the need for travel or extensive planning. This can be particularly appealing for those who have busy schedules, are unable to travel, or simply prefer a more intimate ceremony. Additionally, the online marriage option may be more affordable than a traditional wedding, as it eliminates many of the expenses associated with a physical ceremony.

However, it is important to note that online marriage is not without its drawbacks. Some may argue that an online ceremony lacks the personal touch and emotional impact of a physical wedding. Some countries may not recognize online marriage as a legally valid option, which can be a barrier for couples looking to obtain legal recognition of their union. It is important to do thorough research and ensure that online marriage is a legally valid option in your location before making any decisions.

Let us handle the paperwork.

Lighthearted & Amusing Best Man Speech Example

(Name) has asked me to talk today about what a great guy he is, and so I can honestly say that he's handsome, brilliant, funny and perrr.... (TURN TO GROOM) ... (Groom's name), I can't read your writing. What's this last word? Since we met, I have seen his transformation from an awkward youth to a slightly less awkward adult, and it is my great pleasure to speak on this important occasion.

Of course, we wouldn't be here today without (partner's name) and his/her/their ability to get shy old (groom's name) to propose. (Partner's name), I'm sure it was worth the wait. I often think that (partner's name) makes (groom's name) look good. Mainly by standing next to him. He/she/they is/are full of warmth, humor, and initiative.

Marriage is a serious matter which shouldn't be entered into without careful consideration and since (groom's name) took his sweet time proposing, I think it's safe to say he's thought about this for a long time. (Add humorous story about his commitment issues here).

In conclusion, these two married today for better and for worse. (Groom's name) couldn't have done better and (partner's name) couldn't have done
.. (look down at notes and pause) better either. I'd like to thank the attendants on behalf of the couple. They all look wonderful, and I'm sure you'll all agree they have performed their role splendidly. And finally, on behalf of everyone here, I can truly say we wish nothing but the best for your future. You are a unique and perfectly matched couple, and we hope that all your dreams come true, and you have a magical life together. Ladies and Gentlemen, please join me in a toast............. To (couple's names).

Groom's Wedding Speech

The groom's speech should be one that primarily expresses his appreciation for the love and support of his friends and family. He should also express his devotion to his new spouse.

Heartfelt Groom's Speech Example

I would just like to thank everybody for coming today, especially those that have traveled quite a ways to celebrate this day with us. Ever since I first started dating (spouse's name), his/her/their family has made me feel welcome and, well, like a member of the family. Now, I am officially part of that wonderful family, and I'm very grateful.

I would like to thank both sets of parents since neither (spouse's name) nor I would be here today if it weren't for them. I would also like to thank you for all your love and support over the years, and for all the advice you have given us. If we can raise a family half as wonderful, then we will be very happy.

I must also thank my new in-laws for bringing up such a compassionate and intelligent son/daughter/child. And, to my husband/wife/partner, you look absolutely gorgeous. Thank you for everything you've done. You know everything about me and love me just the same. I have my faults, yet you still agreed to marry me. I am extremely lucky today to be the one to marry you, and I know this is the start of many happy years together. I would like to thank (best man's name) for agreeing to be my best man and all the attendants for their help and support. Here's a toast to you all.

Bride's Wedding Speech

The bride's speech is very similar to the groom's speech. She should also express her appreciation to her family and friends and express her love for her new spouse.

Elegant Bride Speech Example

(Spouse's name) and I feel privileged to be sharing our day with all our friends and family who have been so important to us throughout our lives. Many of you traveled for quite a long distance. Thanks to all of you for the efforts and sacrifices you have made to be with us today.

I also want to thank the most wonderful parents a child could ever have. Not only for the love, support and guidance over the years, but also for everything you've done to help make this day perfect. We would have never managed without you both, and today would not have been possible or so special. Thank you to both sets of our parents from the bottom of our hearts.

Now it's time to thank my beautiful bridesmaids for everything they've done and for being the greatest friends ever. To my maid of honor, (maid of honor's name), you have been a lifesaver. You truly are the definition of a best friend and sister. Thank you for always being there for me.

(Spouse's name), I want to thank you for making my life complete. I am so lucky to be your wife, and I look forward to our life together. Finally, we would like to thank each one of you for being here with us on this special day.

Groom's or Bride's Father Speech

The groom's or bride's father should give a speech that welcomes the bride or groom into the family. He should also mention the joining of the two families and express well wishes and thoughts of happiness for the newly married couple's future.

Thoughtful Welcome Speech Example

Good afternoon everyone. First of all, on behalf of my wife and I, I would like to welcome (groom's or bride's parents) into the family. I'd also like to welcome relatives and friends of both families and thank you all for being here, especially those of you who have traveled a long way to make this special occasion so memorable. (Bride and groom's names) have obviously worked really hard on this beautiful wedding, and I'm sure everyone here agrees that the ceremony was wonderful.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone else involved in making the day so special. At this point, I would like to formally welcome (bride or groom) into the family, even though you have been part of it for a good while now. Without sounding too corny, (bride or groom's name), you are a great person who clearly loves our (son/daughter/child) and obviously makes him/her/them very happy. I think you have been with (groom or bride's name) long enough now to know what you are getting yourself into by joining our family, so, to be honest, I don't have any sympathy for you. Seriously though (groom or bride's name), we are glad that you are part of our family, and I am proud to have you as a (son-in-law or daughter-in-law).

Sticking with tradition, I'd like to leave the new couple with some words of advice as they enter into this next stage of their lives together. As a great philosopher once said, a man who gives in when he is wrong is a wise man. Whilst a man who gives in when he is right is married. All that remains is for me to ask that you all join me in a toast to the happy couple. May you both live as long as you like and have all that you need for as long as you live. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you (bride and groom's names).

Maid of Honor's Speech

The maid of honor's speech might give thanks to the bride for being chosen as the honored attendant. She might also give a little history as to how the bride and groom met, as well as when she first noticed that they had fallen in love. The bride's maid of honor could also relate some humorous, though not embarrassing, stories about the bride or the newly married couple.

  • Free Maid of Honor Speeches

Gracious Maid of Honor Speech Example

When (bride's name) asked me to be her maid of honor, I started wondering where the custom of having a bridesmaid originated from. My research led me to the interesting origins of many of our wedding customs, and everything is done to protect the bride from misfortune on her wedding day.

In the old days, sometimes marriage was by capture, and a maiden was guarded by her family to prevent seizure. The bridesmaids would often act as decoys by wearing dresses similar to the bride's to confuse the kidnappers and to keep evil spirits away. Today, I have done my best to keep the evil spirits away, but at least the family wasn't a problem!

Both of you have found your other half. Thank you (bride's name) for being such a wonderful best friend. I'm glad you have found (spouse's name), and I know that he/she/they will always love you. Always love and respect each other. Remember that a married couple are indeed best friends, and good friendships are built not with time, but with trust! May you grow old together on one pillow, and may your life be filled with happiness and joy! My love to the both of you!

The wedding speeches, that part between the beautiful moment when the couple are wed and when everyone gets on the dance floor. For those who are close to the bride and groom, this can be a truly heart-warming moment filled with gushing praises of love. For the majority of us, although we would never admit it, this can be considered the boring part of the day with bad jokes and long, boring poems.

However, over the past decade something magical has happened. Thanks to the internet there is now fierce competition to make sure that every newlywed has a wedding speech which is the funniest and most entertaining of all. The pressure is on but these guys have tossed the slow speeches and opted instead for dance acts, rap songs, flash mobs and even dancing waiters. What kind of wedding would it be if it doesn't get over 500,000 views on YouTube anyway?

All newlyweds are nervous on their big day but when the responses from the guests are this memorable, you know you might just have landed the title of The Wedding of the Century.

15 Tom Fletcher Performs A Private Gig

McFly frontman, Tom Fletcher, married his long-term girlfriend, Giovanna Falcone, in 2012. The rocker announces that he can't cope with public speaking so when the big moment calls for his speech, the 30-year-old blasts out an acoustic revamp of one of his own songs,  It's All About You.  The rendition is a big thank you to his friends and family, a complete crowd pleaser which is as catchy as it is charming. With over 16 million hits on YouTube.

14 A Comedian Serenades His New Wife

They say it's best to find a life partner with a sense of humour and judging by this surprise performance from British comic, Bryan Lacey, his new wife has done just that. Picking up an acoustic guitar he bursts into a song that has the whole wedding party laughing alongside him. He wows his guests with genius lyrics such as: "We should have another holiday/ but everybody says that three holidays a year is greedy/ but they've never seen you in a bikini". This guy has some hilarious songwriting talent.

13  Daniel Buccheri Surprises His Brother

Singer and self-proclaimed "Best Best Man", Daniel Buccheri, bought home three million views when he uploaded his best man's speech. Serenading the bride and groom with his very own take on Sam Smith's  Stay With Me  then breaking out into an upbeat comedic performance really is pure gold. It was his own brother's wedding and the kind of effort every best man should be making.

12 Surprise Let It Go Performance

If there was an award for the most hilarious remix of  Frozen's Let It Go  then this maid of honour should take home the trophy. The bride, known as Amy, laughs as her sister complains that since she is now married they won't have much sister-time anymore. Her own mother joins in during the chorus begging her daughters to just let each other go. Despite being terribly off-key, this funny sibling makes up for it with her cuteness factor.

11 Father Of The Bride Kills It With His Dancing

Your typical father of the bride speech is either a warning that the groom better look after his daughter or just a series of terrible Dad jokes. As he takes to the stage, the father of the bride looks around for a drink and drags over the nearest waiter he can find. A very awkward beginning exchange soon becomes a duet that even top comics would be proud to pull off.

10 Don't Stop Believing

There's something about the intro and lyrics of Journey's  Don't Stop Believing  that can instantly make everyone feel delighted. Bride, Meg Stankevich, put together a huge surprise for her man after she serenaded him with  At Last  by Etta James. The love she captured with the song is enough to bring a tear to anyone's eye, especially as this song has some really tough notes to nail.

8 Wedding Guests Get Their Groove On

Isn't it just great when you get the whole gang together? What begins as quite a mundane best man speech soon turns into an epic choreographed routine with the bridal party and groomsmen when the music starts up. Performing to Walk The Moon's epic hit  Shut Up and Dance  they get the crowd clapping along and then eventually everyone joins in. Like a true wave of happiness this is one moment the wedding party won't be forgetting anytime soon.

7 It's Britney Time...

Sometimes you can take one look at a best man and know exactly why he was chosen for the job. Choreographer, Chris Downey helped Bradley Bredeweg surprise his best friend, Stephanie Huntington, on her wedding day with a Britney Spears-style performance. In his opening speech he mentions how the two of them have been huge fans of Britney and just before he gives her away as a new bride, they have one last moment of silly fun together.

Grabbing the mic she announces that she hates public speaking but she quips, "Katie told me if I do a good job tonight then I can do it again at her next wedding". With the crowd all hyped up, Chesley delivers seven minutes of hilarious musical brilliance.

5 (Pitch) Perfect Moment

It's not a proper party unless a flash mob appears from nowhere. When the maid of honour starts acting awkward the bride looks confused. Then the party discovers they have put together a  Pitch Perfect performance to blow the guests away. Far from a polished performance, it's the fact that these girls look as if they just rehearsed in a parking lot outside that makes it all the more entertaining.

4 The Hallstone Rap

Best Man, Steven Hallstone, decided that he would surprise his brother, Adam with his unique version of  Down  by Jay Sean. With bride, Laura Doak, also by his side he begins rapping - badly - reminding her to the beat that she is now a Hallstone for life. What Steven lacks in musical talent he makes up for in creativity with this humorous routine. We absolutely love this one.

3 Maid Of Honour Drops The Beat

Here is another contender in the worst- yet-most-charming rapper competition. Maid of honor, Kelly Farace, rewrites the rap of Vanilla Ice's hit  Ice Ice Baby. She raps: "Now that the party is pumping, with drinks in the air and lot's of first pumping". All the guests are clearly loving it. She also mentions in her number about the open bar, so either at the end of the video there is a standing ovation or just a rush to be the first in the queue for a drink.

2 Sisters Storm The World With Their Performance

It's not a real honeymoon unless you go viral when you are away. At least thats what Caitlin Hallerman and her groom, Johnny, discovered after their bridesmaids performed this epic routine. Caitlin's sisters, Kelsey and Maddie Hallerman, can not sing and they certainly can not dance - but they sure can write a viral hit. They remixed together Tracy Chapman's Give Me One Reason,  Jackson 5's I Want You Back , Backstreet Boys' Everybody and Michael Jackson's Black or White . best wedding speeches of all time

When it comes to unforgettable wedding speeches in movies, audiences have been treated to a plethora of memorable moments that range from heartfelt to hilariously candid. Here is a list of the 10 best wedding speeches from films that not only captured the essence of the characters but also left a lasting impression on moviegoers:

1.’My Best Friend’s Wedding’ (1997) – George’s Speech:

George breaks into “I Say a Little Prayer” at the dinner, unexpectedly creating one of the most delightful and sing-along moments in rom-com history.

2.’The Wedding Singer’ (1998) – Robbie’s Song:

Although not a speech by the traditional definition, Robbie Hart’s impromptu performance of “Grow Old With You” on the airplane is as honest and touching as any formal wedding toast.

3.’Bridesmaids’ (2011) – Annie and Helen’s Toasts:

Competitive speeches by best friends Annie and Helen hilariously one-up each other, showcasing the film’s blend of comedy and sentimentality.

4.’Four Weddings and a Funeral’ (1994) – Charles’s Stuttering Speech:

In this British classic, Charles delivers an awkward but charming speech that exemplifies his character’s endearing personality.

5.’Wedding Crashers’ (2005) – John’s Pitch-Perfect Toasts:

John, an experienced wedding crasher, gives flawless toasts that are both comedic showcases for audiences and love letters to the art of crashing.

6.’Love Actually’ (2003) – Mark’s Video Montage:

Though technically without words, Mark’s silent wedding video for Juliet speaks volumes about his hidden love in one of cinema’s most bittersweet reveals.

7.’Crazy Rich Asians’ (2018) – Oliver’s Witty Commentary:

Oliver T’sien provides a colorful and animated short speech that delivers both wit and insight into the unfolding lavish wedding festivities.

8.’Sweet Home Alabama’ (2002) – Jake’s Confession:

In a moment of true love revealed, Jake interrupts what could have been his divorce to profess his enduring love in an impromptu but heartfelt speech.

9.‘The Princess Bride’ (1987) – Impressive Clergyman’s Words:

Though meant to be serious, the clergyman’s comically serious “Mawage” speech has become iconic for its humorous take on wedding vows.

10.‘Steel Magnolias’ (1989) – Drum & Annelle’s Reception:

A sentimental gathering highlights southern charm as Drum recounts touching stories during his daughter’s reception.

These scenes stand out for their ability to blend humor, warmth, pathos, and sometimes sheer romance into a few minutes that encapsulate much larger stories within their respective films. Whether they’re played for laughs or tears, these speeches are integral parts of the movies they’re found in and have earned their places in cinematic history as some of the best wedding-related scenes ever written.

The Most Memorable TV and Movie Best Man Wedding Speeches of All Time

These fictional toasts are some of the most unforgettable moments in entertainment history.

As we all know, there are many commitments  a person is required to fulfill when asked to be the best man. However, these tasks—which include organizing the bachelor party , supporting the groom during the planning stage, and holding onto the wedding rings during the ceremony—are nothing compared to the main event and final responsibility: the best man speech.

Typically a three to five-minute toast meant to honor the couple, the best man speech is not only held in high regard, but is an age-old tradition many look forward to hearing at the rehearsal dinner or reception. These speeches are so popular, in fact, that countless TV shows and movies have immortalized this one special moment in a variety of ways.

From The Office to The Hangover Part II , some of our favorite fictional characters have delivered the most memorable (and hilarious) best man wedding speeches known to mankind. And for those currently preparing to give their own toasts, we've rounded up the top seven fictional moments to help inspire your own. Whether you find inspiration for a few jokes or learn what you should absolutely not do, read on for a few wedding day speeches we're sure you'll love.

The Five-Year Engagement

This hilarious romantic comedy follows the story of Tom Solomon (Jason Segel) and Violet Barnes (Emily Blunt), an engaged couple who struggle to make it down the aisle due to several unexpected misfortunes. But once they finally get to the alter and officially say "I do," Solomon's best man, Alex Eilhauer (Chris Pratt), decides to send them off with an epic, but inappropriate, best man speech that features a PowerPoint presentation and a toast sung to the tune of "We Didn’t Start The Fire" by Billy Joel.

The Wedding Singer

In a scene from  The Wedding Singer,  actor Steve Buscemi plays a hilarious, but completely unhinged, best man. In his special toast during the reception , Buscemi's character delivers a drunken speech that includes topics like his stint in a rehab facility, family traumas, and exposed hidden secrets. While noteworthy and highly entertaining, this movie moment is a prime example of what not to do in the real world.

Friends (The One With Ross's Wedding: Part 2)

During Ross Geller (David Schwimmer) and Emily Waltham's (Helen Baxendale) rehearsal dinner , best men Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry) and Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc) take center stage to deliver a best man speech everyone will love. Unfortunately, they both fail. Though Chandler tries to be funny, his humor and sarcasm get lost in the crowd, which ultimately leads to an embarrassing toast. As for Joey, while his toast seemingly starts off great, the quirky character ends up going on several tangents completely unrelated to the wedding, like his love for New York City and the United States.

Four Weddings and a Funeral

Fictional best man speeches are usually those that can be categorized as catastrophic, inappropriate, and downright bad. However, in  Four Weddings and a Funeral , best man Charles, played by Hugh Grant, delivers a lovely toast filled with humor, personal anecdotes, and a focus on the couple's love for each other—the perfect recipe for a best man speech.

The Best Man

After almost completely sabotaging his best friends' wedding, Harper Stewart (Taye Diggs) redeems himself at the reception with a graceful and thoughtful best man speech. By focusing on the couple and highlighting the unbreakable bond between husband, Lance Sullivan (Morris Chestnut), and wife, Mia Morgan (Monica Calhoun), this toast is a heartfelt wedding moment that is remembered today as one of the best toasts in movie history.

The Office (Phyllis's Wedding)

Though this speech doesn't technically fall into the best man category, given the fact that Michael Scott (Steve Carell) completely ambushed Phyllis Lapin (Phyllis Smith) and Bob Vance's (Robert R. Shafer) reception, this speech is one of the most unforgettable wedding toasts in TV history. During Scott's impromptu moment, the Dunder Mifflin regional manager blurts out a bunch of random quotes, one-liners, and cheesy jokes. And while Steve Carrell's acting is utterly flawless in this scene, real-life best men should stay away from replicating Michael Scott's approach.

The Hangover Part II

During The Hangover Part II , Alan (Zach Galifianakis) takes the mic to give one of the most embarrassing best man speeches we've ever seen. Addressing a table of family and friends, he begins by sharing several inappropriate "fun facts", before ultimately being prompted to quickly end his toast. Once at the end, though, he wraps up his speech with information a best man should never share, such as the groom's past relationship history and a mention of their indiscretions during a trip to Las Vegas , as documented in the first Hangover movie.

6 Breakout Speeches From US Presidential Conventions

By: Lesley Kennedy

Published: July 17, 2024

John F Kennedy convention

Since 1832, the presidential nominating convention , held every four years, has been a rallying cry for political parties and candidates. These conventions are highlighted by speeches from keynotes, surrogates, spouses, family members, rising stars, running mates and, since 1932, acceptance speeches from the party’s presidential nominee.

That year, Franklin Delano Roosevelt delivered the first in-person nomination acceptance speech during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Broadcast live on the radio, it set the stage for future speeches over the last 90-plus years.

“Acceptance speeches by presidential nominees are important because they ‘officially’ launch the general election bid,” says Tammy Vigil, associate professor of media science at Boston University and author of Connection with Constituents and the forthcoming US Political Ritual and the Covid Pandemic: The 2020 Democratic and Republican Conventions .

“Ideally, they should unify the party, introduce the main arguments and topics for the general election, outline—in broad strokes—the planks in the party’s platform, and provide a rhetorical vision of the nation and its future.”

Barbara Perry , an author and professor of presidential studies at the University of Virginia’s Miller Center , where she co-directs the Presidential Oral History Program , says party conventions are like “a four-day pep rally,” where candidates not only share their platforms but also aim to unify the party, especially after contentious primary seasons.

Convention speeches also introduce future leaders of the party, humanize candidates, present policies, act as swan songs or tributes, and sometimes attack the opposing party, Perry adds. Memorable party convention speeches often introduce campaign taglines, as well. “You hear the theme or title of the platform the nominee will stand for,” she says.

From FDR’s “New Deal” to JFK’s “New Frontier” to Ronald Reagan’s “Challenge” to George H.W. Bush’s “Read my lips: no new taxes,” here are seven memorable speeches throughout history that marked new eras or mandates.

1. Franklin D. Roosevelt, 1932: the 'New Deal'

FDR Speaking at Democratic National Convention

Memorable line: "I pledge you, I pledge myself, to a new deal for the American people. Let us all here assembled constitute ourselves prophets of a new order of competence and of courage. This is more than a political campaign. It is a call to arms."

In 1932, Roosevelt broke tradition by delivering the first in-person acceptance speech during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. He traveled seven hours by plane from Albany, New York, to make the first nationally broadcast acceptance address live at the DNC.

“His speech is noteworthy because he understood the opportunity he had to seize the historic moment—foregoing a separate celebration for his nomination during a time when most of the country was reeling from the effects of the Great Depression—and how to capitalize on the new communication technology of radio to reach the public in a more direct fashion than was previously possible,” Vigil says. “FDR showed great rhetorical savvy.”

Roosevelt also introduced a phrase that continues to resonate.

“It was FDR in ’32 who said, ‘I pledge to you a New Deal for America,” Perry adds. “To this day, we call his presidency the New Deal . We call it the New Deal court, we call it New Deal legislation, New Deal policy.”

2. John F. Kennedy, 1960: the 'New Frontier'

Memorable line: "We stand today on the edge of a New Frontier —the frontier of the 1960s—a frontier of unknown opportunities and perils, a frontier of unfulfilled hopes and threats. Woodrow Wilson's New Freedom promised our nation a new political and economic framework. Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal promised security and succor to those in need. But the New Frontier of which I speak is not a set of promises—it is a set of challenges. It sums up not what I intend to offer the American people, but what I intend to ask of them. It appeals to their pride, not to their pocketbook—it holds out the promise of more sacrifice instead of more security."

Following eight years of Republican leadership under Dwight D. Eisenhower , John F. Kennedy’s 1960 campaign focused on change. Playing off FDR’s New Deal, his acceptance speech at the 1960 Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles looked to a “New Frontier.”

“Why should we pick somebody who's going to go backward when we can elect someone who will move us forward?” Perry says. Facing then-Vice President Richard Nixon , Kennedy highlighted a stark contrast between himself, Nixon and Eisenhower .

“Nixon was just a few years older than Kennedy, and they were both World War II vets,” Perry says. “But Eisenhower, at the time, was our oldest president. He was 70 years old and had been very ill. Kennedy, despite his then-unknown medical conditions, cut the figure of a war hero—tan, ready, energetic. He wanted to make a distinction: I am for the ’60s. We're going to move out of these quiescent ’50s led by this dullard, Eisenhower. I am 43, and I am going to lead us into the future.”

3. Richard Nixon, 1968: 'The Forgotten Americans'

Richard Nixon at the 1968 Republican National Convention i

Memorable line: “It is the voice of the great majority of Americans, the forgotten Americans , the non-shouters, the non-demonstrators.
This I say to you tonight is the real voice of America.”

Richard Nixon ’s acceptance speech at the 1968 Republican National Convention in Miami Beach, Florida, was a pivotal moment in his political comeback, according to Perry. Following his losses to Kennedy in 1960 and Pat Brown in the 1962 California gubernatorial race, Nixon aimed to rebrand himself and address his image as “Tricky Dick.”

“Nixon may not have been a great orator, but he was very effective,” Perry says. “In that speech, Nixon needed to humanize himself as the new Nixon because of his past losses. Then he made this dramatic comeback.”

Perry points to the literary quality of his acceptance speech. “He spoke about an unnamed child in a city rife with guns and violence, laying out his law-and-order theme. Then he transitioned to talking about a little boy listening to the train whistles in California—and you realize it's Nixon himself. He spoke about his father, his mother and the loss of his brother to TB—all in an attempt to humanize Nixon. And it worked.”

4. Ronald Reagan, 1976: 'They Will Know Whether We Met Our Challenge'

Ronald Reagan at the 1976 Republican National Convention.

Memorable line: Speaking about being asked to write a letter for a time capsule to be opened in 100 years: “And suddenly it dawned on me; those who would read this letter a hundred years from now will know whether those missiles were fired. They will know whether we met our challenge. Whether they will have the freedom that we have known up until now will depend on what we do here. Will they look back with appreciation and say, ‘Thank God for those people in 1976 who headed off that loss of freedom? Who kept us now a hundred years later free? Who kept our world from nuclear destruction?’ And if we fail, they probably won’t get to read the letter at all because it spoke of individual freedom and they won’t be allowed to talk of that or read of it.”

The 1976 Republican National Convention in Kansas City marked the last time the presidential nominee was chosen during the convention. That year, incumbent President Gerald Ford faced former California Governor Ronald Reagan in a contentious primary season.

Ford secured the nomination, but Reagan’s off-the-cuff speech following Ford’s acceptance was not only the most memorable from the convention but also set his eventual two-term presidency in motion.

Perry says the speech and its time capsule imagery launched Reagan to secure the 1980 nomination over Ford.

“It was that poetic, literary, yet simple and accessible messaging that Ronald Reagan and his speech writers were just perfect at,” she says.

Vigil says the speech was very consequential . “It helped put the GOP on a much more staunchly conservative political path at a time when the party was struggling with its identity,” she says.

5. George H.W. Bush, 1988: 'Read My Lips: No New Taxes'

best wedding speeches of all time

Memorable line: “ My opponent won't rule out raising taxes, but I will, and the Congress will push me to raise taxes, and I'll say no, and they'll push, and I'll say no, and they'll push again, and I'll say to them, " Read my lips: no new taxes ."

George H.W. Bush served as vice president under Ronald Reagan and secured his party’s nomination at the Republican National Convention in New Orleans in 1988.

During the convention, he delivered several memorable lines, including envisioning a “kinder, gentler nation,” "a thousand points of light in a broad and peaceful sky," and "read my lips: no new taxes."

Perry says his vow not to raise taxes helped him get elected, although Bush then raised taxes in 1990, which contributed to his loss of a second term.

6. Barack Obama, 2004: 'United States of America'

Barack Obama 2004 convention

Memorable line: "Now even as we speak, there are those who are preparing to divide us—the spin masters, the negative ad peddlers who embrace the politics of anything goes. Well, I say to them tonight, there is not a liberal America and a conservative America—there is the United States of America ."

Barack Obama ’s keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston set the tone for the convention and the then-largely unknown senator from Illinois's future political career.

Vigil notes that keynote addresses like Obama’s are crucial for establishing the party’s topics and previewing the party platform and the candidate’s stances on critical issues.

“Obama’s 2004 speech arguably launched him into the public consciousness nationally," Vigil says, "and set him up for his successful 2008 run."
