2023 Presentation Design Trends - by PresentationGO

You have prepared a rock-solid presentation. Now, it’s time to prepare a slide deck that matches your great ideas, products, and stories. In order to impress your audience and leave an unforgettable impression, you need to design brilliant visuals that stand out. To achieve this goal, it is crucial that you are in touch with the latest trends in design. These 2023 Presentation Design Trends will guide you on some of the essential trends for this year that you don’t want to miss.

After two years of pandemic and a huge development in virtual presentations, 2023 is a year full of hope as the world is returning to a new normal. Therefore, knowing the multiple trends in graphic design will help you create the best possible visuals for your specific purposes. A great number of these trends aim at offering clear and memorable slides to your attendees. For instance, forget about long presentations and slides packed with text. Remember that “a picture is worth a thousand words” and make use of minimalist, less-is-more designs. Clean and easy-to-read data visualization charts are also on the rise. Additionally, don’t forget to convey success and optimism with fresh, soothing, and inspiring colors. Consider using natural greens, passionate purples, and pastel hues as they are fantastic options to communicate feelings such as abundance, safety, wisdom, spirituality, and peace.

However, you should not worry about being unoriginal or fashion victims! The 2023 design trends are varied, and you will definitely find an option that fits your field of work, personality, and intentions. To achieve a successful presentation, don’t overlook any element in your visual aids! The choice of images, infographics, fonts, colors, and layouts are all equally important. With this in mind, we are happy to present to you 10 presentation design trends that will inspire your audience in 2023.

1. Short Presentations

Short Presentations - 2023 Presentation Design Trends

The shorter the presentation, the greater the impact! You must indeed focus on the most relevant information and convey them in a striking and effective manner. This implies never losing your attendees’ attention. Social media has transformed the way we relate to information: we want it all and we want it now! Attention span has been widely reduced and this means you need to convey your big ideas in the shortest possible lapse. For a 5 or 10-minute presentation, you generally need no more than 5 or 10 slides. Have a look at our large collection of presentation templates and pick the one that will give the strongest and most lasting impression.

2. Trading Text for Pictures

Trading Text for Pictures - 2023 Presentation Design Trends

Part of the less-is-more philosophy is to replace words by images. Apart from key concepts and big ideas, you should be able to replace text with pictures. These images will illustrate and emphasize your oral presentation. If you combine a visual impact with an auditive one, you can rest assured your ideas will be understood and stored into your attendees’ brains. So take a peek at our collection of templates with picture placeholders to include striking images into your presentation.

3. 3D Charts and Diagrams

3D Charts and Diagrams - 2023 Presentation Design Trends

A clear chart will always be better than just mentioning a number, percentage, or statistic. Your key figures will be remembered more easily by using a clear, colorful, and original infographic. Even better if you use a 3D design: this will indeed bring dynamism to your slides. Time to breathe life and movement into your presentations thanks to our collection of more than one hundred 3D charts and diagrams !

Doodles - 2023 Presentation Design Trends

5 Presentation Design Trends to Try in 2023

5 Presentation Design Trends to Try in 2023

In any type of design— interior, graphic, or fashion— trends are a revolving door. What’s popular one year might not be prominent in designs the next. Staying on top of these trends keeps your designs fresh and relevant, with a better chance of grabbing the attention of your audience. The same applies to presentations.

You can pull inspiration from graphic design trends into your presentation. Things like colors, typography, image styles, and layouts can all vary from year to year. And with the principles of good presentation design in mind, it can be fun to test out new design options in your decks without compromising professionalism.

Here are 5 presentation trends to try in 2023.

Big backgrounds

In the coming year you can expect to see bigger backgrounds with more impact. This can be background images on every slide, bigger images on title slides, or flowing shapes that complement the slide layout. By using big backgrounds (not to be confused with loud or cluttered backgrounds), you’re demanding your audience’s attention to the slide in front of them.

In Beautiful.ai you can upload slide background images to your theme. For optimal design, you can choose whether it is treated as a light or dark background to ensure legibility, and opt to select one as a default background for all of the slides in the deck.

Modern minimalism

There’s something to be said about a clean, minimalistic presentation. Sure, it looks modern and professional (a win in and of itself). But more importantly, it’s easier to absorb the information being presented to you.

To create a minimalist presentation, keep these design tips in mind;

  • Stick to one idea per slide
  • Avoid lengthy blocks of text
  • Use modern colors that complement each other
  • Only include the most meaningful metrics and information
  • Add modern photos and icons

Unique AI-powered images

Playing around with images— image grids, muted images, branded filters, and image overlays— is nothing new and groundbreaking. We’ve always encouraged people to use images throughout their presentations to lead the story. Why? Most humans are visual learners and will actually retain information better if there is an image associated with what you’re telling them. Plus, going image-heavy on your slides can help break up the dull blocks of texts.

In 2023 we will still see images and videos play a big role in presentation design. However, with evolving technology, the bar for images has gotten higher. With AI on the rise, we’re expecting to see more unique AI-powered images in 2023 and beyond. In anticipation of this trend, we added our new ImageBot (Beta) feature. You can make custom presentation images in seconds with our new AI-powered ImageBot. Simply describe what you're looking for, and let ImageBot create a unique AI image to take your story to the next level.

Bold colors

In up and coming graphic design trends, we’re seeing a lot of retro and bold color combinations. It’s no surprise since the Pantone color of the year is the vibrant Viva Magenta. These color palettes can easily translate into presentations, too. While you don’t want to risk losing your branding to a new trend, it could be fun to incorporate bolder hues in your custom themes. You can select a bolder shade in the same family as your brand color(s) to use as an accent to call-out key metrics. Similarly, you can play around with background colors on your slides to create more attention-grabbing designs.

Sophisticated Serif fonts

Typography is subjective, and can look different for every brand and business. To maintain brand integrity, your branded fonts should take precedence over what’s trending. That said, we’re seeing a lot of sophisticated Serif fonts at the forefront of designs for 2023. Serif fonts are a fan-favorite known for its refined professionalism and dependability. They are a great option for any presentation.

In 2023 we can expect to see designers adding a fun and artistic flare to the otherwise simple and traditional font. With different letter shapes and sizes, intertwining letters, and intentional distortion, there will be a new take on Serif. These iterations could be fun to upload as a custom font option for title slides or headings, while using a more subtle Serif for body text.

7 defining presentation design trends for 2023

As we move into this year, we are witnessing modern aesthetics transitioning from 2022’s maximalism – with its dopamine-spiking colors, nostalgia, and multiple pallets – to 2023’s bold, personal expressionism.

Let’s zoom in on practical applications of these trending styles and explore how to use them for your PowerPoint slides inspiration (and other purposes).

#1. Expressive & inclusive artistry

Slogan : Key theme of 2023

Expressive artistry embraces the freedom to express a wide range of diverse personalities, characters, and styles.

This inspiring trend is rooted in society’s obvious desire to connect and relate to each other, which shows itself in the unprecedented spread of authenticity and groundedness in culture.

Expressive & inclusive artistry

How to incorporate it:

  • Choose unique styles loaded with colors and self-expression – think optimistic color palettes, photography, and video influenced by travel, creative progression, and unapologetic individuality.
  • Embrace inclusive design and visuals that represent people of every age, race, gender, orientation, and a range of visible and invisible disabilities as active members of society.
  • Include authentic illustrations with a familiar, homey look and feel.
  • Use bold fonts and expressive visuals.

When it is a great fit: This trend bodes well with consumer brands or mission-driven B2B firms, so consider all direct-to-consumer (D2C) and business-to-consumer (B2C) companies in areas like health or fashion.

Tips : If you’re going for this emotional style, make sure to always complement it with a more plain and unpretentious layout. You can feed your inspiration on websites like Getty Images . And forget about stock images!

#2. 3D realism

Slogan : Going mainstream

3D realism (not to be confused with 3D illustrations) is here to give objects and people a sense of depth and show that beauty can be found in imperfections.

3D realism absorbs us into its playful and exciting world, where design elements feel even more relatable and close, but in an almost childish way.

3D realism

  • Use an eye-catching, bright color palette with rich use of candy colors.
  • Include characters and objects that look like toys.
  • Make sure visuals have bumpy, plasticine-like surfaces.

When it is a great fit: This trend is great for B2C companies in creative and e-commerce industries, as well as AR/VR startups.

Tips: Look for unique imagery that you can combine with the expressive and inclusive artistry trend. Don’t incorporate this trend if you’re targeting an older audience or work in a serious industry.

#3. Nature-inspired design

Slogan : Still here

While the refreshing trend of design taking inspiration from nature is still going strong, there have been a few changes in how we go about it. In 2023, this trend will explore new ways to convey tranquility, inner peace, and harmony.

Nature-inspired design

  • Color and photos are no longer enough to create a convincing look and feel. Now you need to add nature-inspired graphic design elements and botanical visuals.
  • Mix together real nature and fictional reality.
  • Go for a minimalist aesthetic with earthy shades and hues.
  • Use muted earth tones, natural materials, textures, and shapes.

When it is a great fit : This approach will align with all environment-focused ESG companies and B2C companies that sell goods and natural cosmetics.

Tips : To nail this trend, think beyond imagery and look for unconventional ways to incorporate the theme in the layout. This trend works well with vintage and earthy vibes.

#4. Hyper-minimalism & vivid minimalism

Slogan: Full mainstream Hyper-minimalism is going full mainstream in 2023, all because of its unmatched versatility. This universal theme is a safe yet trendy presentation design idea for pretty much everyone.

Hyper-minimalism & vivid minimalism

  • Get rid of patterns, ornaments, and decorations to create breathing room for what really matters.
  • Focus on primarily white, light beige, and white-ish tints from the color wheel to convey the feeling of cleanliness in its purest form.
  • Ensure that any areas with color are bold and vibrant – monochrome with a sudden pop of color continues to be an in-demand look.
  • If appropriate, combine this style with 3D realism for more depth and catchiness.

When it is a great fit : This is the only trend that you can apply to any project. However, it has the most success around enterprise B2Bs and “serious” industries like medicine, healthcare, security, hardware, and tech.

Tips: Use only high-quality visuals. Combine this style with something else (e.g., 3D realism). Don’t be afraid to throw in bold colors. As a rule of thumb, use the famous “Apple look” to guide your hand.

#5. Motion graphics and AI

Slogan : Hit or miss

Our future looks more and more like a blend between real life and Al, AR, VR, and MR. Of course, brands have taken notice and are already leveraging these elements in their visual communication to create fully immersive brand experiences.

Motion graphics and AI

  • Use animated graphics to demonstrate product applications.
  • Convert images to AI-generated graphics.

When it might be a great fit: This style should work well with startups in VR, AR, Metaverse, Telecom, and creative industries.

Tips: Start experimenting with AI-generated images, but be careful, as this can be a massive hit-or-miss endeavor. Just be consistent and double down on the practice.

#6. Nostalgia and retro-futurism

Slogan : Weird mainstream

Our collective need for escapism has officially manifested itself in this chaotic, sometimes blatantly trippy graphic design trend that covers the 80s, 90s, and 00s nostalgia from a new angle.

Nostalgia and retro-futurism

• Make a comeback by using grainy textures and serif fonts.

• Use nostalgia-driven typefaces and dynamic retro color swatches.

• Reimagine risograph printing by using desaturated colors and abstract graphics.

When it might be a great fit: For some projects targeting Gen Z in the B2C sector; however, we wouldn’t recommend using this style for pitch deck slides design ideas since, in our experience, investors find it difficult to digest.

Tips : This style requires a lot of custom work and can take time to implement organically. Go about it lightly, experiment with one layout, and use it only when you’re confident it matches your business’s personality.

#7. Dark modes

Slogan: It’s back

Already the go-to for fintech startups, the dark theme is taking over a wide range of industries and will soon become a popular vogue and a persistent trend, especially for app designs. Why? The dark mode is one of the best presentation design ideas for showcasing professionalism, creating a sense of security and certainty, and making your slides stand out.

Dark modes

  • Minimize pure black and consider dark shades of colors like gray.
  • Use less-intense colors to minimize strain on the eyes.
  • Make sure there’s still enough contrast and color. The theme pairs well with opaque brand elements.
  • When appropriate, pair it with minimalism and non-flat designs.

When it might be a great fit: It meshes well with most B2B companies, specifically ones in the Web3 space, fintech, hardware products, and consumer electronics.

Tips: Think beyond simple dark modes and use them for sleek UI/UX, product designs, etc.

How do bold and vibrant colors impact presentations?

Color is a powerful tool that affects how humans perceive information. Colors and their combinations hit our emotions way before we even begin to analyze what’s in front of us. Therefore, understanding the psychology behind color allows you to find the perfect context for delivering your idea. The brighter the color, the stronger its emotional charge. Thus, sprinkling bold and vibrant colors throughout your presentation can help establish a stronger emotional connection, create an optimistic mood, and load your message with more power.

How do textured backgrounds enhance the visual appeal of presentations?

Textured backgrounds are a great way to hint at what your content is about or set the desired mood. Textures help to transport a person to a particular place or time; for example, natural textures can remind us of the forest or a desert, while old, paper-like textures take us back to ancient times. But there is a nuance: textured backgrounds only work well when your slides contain a small amount of content. For example, if your presentation is already loaded with text or diagrams, textured backgrounds will make it feel heavy and hard to digest.

1. Big, Bold Typography

Big, Bold Typography

Nothing grabs attention like a big title with bold letters. That’s exactly what this presentation design trend is all about. To try this design trend, all you have to do is make your titles and headings look bigger on each slide and arrange the content around those big text elements.

The main goal of this approach is to quickly capture your audience’s attention with a big, splashy title. Once you have their attention, persuading them to read the rest of the content on the slide is much easier.

Remember to use a sans-serif font with a clean letter design. A slightly condensed font with all-caps letters would be the perfect choice for this.

2. Aesthetic Vibes

Aesthetic Vibes

Beautiful aesthetic slide designs have been a common choice among specific presentations. Especially when it comes to creating slideshows related to fashion, lifestyle, beauty, and luxury brands, a classy and elegant look does a perfect job of creating a charming vibe across the presentation.

Soft browns, light creamy colors, elegant botanical greens, and pastel colors are common in these aesthetic-style presentation designs. Of course, the slide layouts play an important role too. Make sure to keep a consistent and clean look across the slideshow.

3. Gradient Color Schemes

Gradient Color Schemes

Marketers and designers are slowly moving away from the usual, traditional, and boring corporate-style slide designs and adopting more colorful and vibrant color schemes when designing presentations.

It’s quite a welcome change that makes slideshows look much more attractive and stand out from the crowd. One of the most popular looks in this new trend is using gradient colors for backgrounds and shapes. They do wonders for highlighting the text elements as well as for conveying creativity, inclusivity, and overall an energetic and fun vibe.

4. Retro and Groovy

Retro and Groovy

Being able to create informative presentations combined with a sense of nostalgia and fun is the main reason why this trend has been popular over the past few months. Designers who use this trend often go for various styles of retro-themed looks. Cool 90s vibes, 80s neon color palettes, and 70s groovy psychedelic-style designs are among just a few.

A retro and groovy presentation design is not just about making slideshows look fun but they can also be a tool for storytelling and evoking emotions. This makes this an effective trend to be used in presentations related to marketing and promoting brands.

5. Asymmetrical Layouts

Asymmetrical Layouts

This design trend encourages designers to break away from the usual grid and column-based presentation slide designs and experiment with new layout styles.

Creating asymmetrical slide layouts allows you to use your creativity and imagination to create experimental content designs by placing text, images, and shapes on the slides in an unconventional way. This approach often creates more stimulating presentations and a unique experience for the audience with each slide.

6. Full-bleed Images

Full-bleed Images

Using full-bleed images that expand across the entire slide is a design strategy that allows you to create more impactful and emotional presentations that convey a strong message.

This design trend involves using large images as backgrounds to create more visual-centric slides. While it’s quite effective in photography, studio, and portfolio presentations, the key to creating a balanced slideshow is to only include a few full-bleed image slides among other normal slides.

7. Overlapping Elements

Overlapping Elements

Creating slides with overlapping elements, also known as slide layering, is an innovative trend that offers a more dynamic look for modern presentations.

It involves creating slides with objects that overlap with one another. Like text and shapes that overlap with images. Or content blocks that seem out of place. These slides look much more unique and stimulating than most other styles of presentation designs.

8. Flowing Shapes

2023 presentation trends

One way to make your PowerPoint presentation design stand out is to use flowing shapes. Too often, templates focus on all blocks and rectangles. With a set of flowing shapes, your presentation design will have an immediate impact.

When thinking about this style use a couple of different shapes and build on them. Ovals and circles are rather nice and partial shapes that extend off the screen and provide another option for these shapes with flow and movement.

Use shapes with a bright color or consider tints with a more subtle impact.

The trick to flowing shapes is to use them in such a way that they create visual flow toward text and other important messaging elements in the design. Plan accordingly!

9. Colorful Text Blocks

2023 presentation trends

If you are working on a presentation design and don’t have a lot of great images, colorful text blocks can be a fun way to show information without feeling too bland.

There are a couple of ways to make this presentation design trend your own:

  • Use color for text blocks that’s part of your brand palette.
  • Use colors that are unique to a specific theme or project.
  • Include limited imagery with color blocks for additional interest.
  • Make sure the color block and text element has high contrast and is easy to read.
  • Use your brand font palette for an even more custom look and feel.

10. Dark Mode

2023 presentation trends

Dark mode isn’t just for website design. It’s one of those design trends that has crept into almost every facet of design, including presentations.

While this style looks very trendy and modern, it can present some challenges.

Reverse type can be difficult to read in some situations or lighting. Consider bumping up font sizes larger than you normally would. Don’t feel like dark has to mean black. Experiment with other dark color palettes for the base, such as purple or navy.

As long as the overall design has plenty of contrast and is readable, dark mode can be a fun and striking presentation design option.

2023 presentation trends

If dark mode is a little too dramatic for your PowerPoint presentations, consider an all-gray aesthetic. Gray has a calming feel, is visually pleasing, and is generally easy to read.

You can pair gray with colorful images or accents or go for a full-mode look, such as the example above, with black and white images and just a small hint of color.

This design scheme is trendy and quite elegant for presentations.

12. Image Overlays

2023 presentation trends

There are generally mixed feelings about how to use images in presentation design. Some people love full-screen large image slides, while others argue that images can get in the way of messaging.

In the middle is this trend – use images with a color overlay. This allows plenty of room for images and text elements with a softer, more subtle feel.

Image overlays can also create a nice element of design and color consistency to help carry a presentation visually from start to finish.

13. High Color

2023 presentation trends

High-color designs have been popular for a while in other design arenas, and are bleeding over into presentation design now. This style has a very distinct feel with bold, bright, or even more pastel palettes with a lot of color.

It’s not for everyone or every type of presentation message.

But if you are looking for a lighter, more fun style, this presentation design trend can be a good place to start. Use your brand colors for maximum impact here.

14. Minimal Monotone

2023 presentation trends

On the other end of the high-color spectrum is choosing a monotone color palette for your presentation design. Monotone does not have to mean low color, but you are working with one predominant hue.

The teal choice in the example above is elegant and modern. It has a fresh feel that works nicely with the minimal outline of the rest of the design. Minimal aesthetics with monotone color palettes are the perfect compliments.

15. Muted Images

2023 presentation trends

If you are looking to make an impact with the presentation design and want to try something totally different, consider muting the images so that they almost fade into the background.

This design style can be a great way to use imagery so that the words on each presentation slide are the true focus. Go a step further and use interesting shapes to direct the eye through slides using this trending style.

16. Blocky Design

2023 presentation trends

If you want to go for a modern and trendy look and love the feel of geometric shapes, consider a blocky design. Using colored blocks, squares, or rectangles, you can create interesting shapes and configurations that make your PowerPoint presentation dazzle.

This is a true high-design style that can take a lot of effort and is best for smaller slide decks. It might also be easier to design if you start with a template, such as in the example above.

The blocky design style also works well with another trend already featured here – monotone color palettes. A single-color design helps hold all the pieces together for a unified presentation design.

17. Photo Stories

2023 presentation trends

A presentation design that uses photos to tell stories is a highly engaging and trendy way to share information. To make the most of this presentation design style, create a template with big image areas that pair with simple text elements.

Keep it interesting with photos of different shapes, sizes, and placements in the design. By pairing text elements with image shapes and sizes, you can create a lot of visual interest with a unified style that does not look repetitious.

A photo story presentation design often doesn’t need a lot of other design elements to work beautifully. All ow images to tell your story and keep other design techniques – color, typography, graphics, and icons – to a minimum.

18. Big Backgrounds

2023 presentation trends

It’s not something we are used to seeing regularly in PowerPoint presentation design – big, bold backgrounds that carry throughout. When done well, an interesting background can make up for a lack of other visual content to help propel a presentation design.

In the example above, the background is made from a simple color palette with blurred shapes. It’s bold and interesting but doesn’t overpower the overall design. That’s the trick to using a style such as this – create interest without overwhelming it.

19. Clean and Simple

2023 presentation trends

It seems a little weird to call this a trend because clean and simple are the most classic of design styles. But it’s trending because it always works. When in doubt, a simple design for a presentation can be just the ticket.

When creating a clean and simple design, think about developing reusable pieces that you can carry throughout the presentation, such as the shape of a photo or the color of a box. Stick to typefaces that further push this theme with a simple sans serif.

The Latest Presentation Trends To Keep An Eye On In 2023

Table of contents.

Prese ntations are used in virtually every industry. From teaching and training to sales and marketing, presentations are a vital method of communication that, when used effectively, can have a profound impact on your audience.

Capturing your audience’s attention is key to a great presentation. This often starts with the presentation design and various design elements. Whether it be the color of the background, the type of shapes or elements on each slide, or the overall presentation design, you should be mindful of the design trends in the presentation world.

In this blog, we will explore the hot presentation design trends for 2023 and how you might use them for your business.

Why Is Keeping Up With Presentation Trends So Important?

As we’ve briefly mentioned above, your presentation design can have quite an impact on how your audience engages with the presentation material. When an audience sees a presentation that stands out, it will stick in their mind after the presentation is over. This is what businesses want when it comes to crafting powerful presentations.

If your presentation is bland and stale, your information will feel bland and stale. On the other hand, if your design or visual content is too over the top, it can take away from the information you are trying to convey to your audience.

Striking this balance in your design is key to a successful PowerPoint presentation. Often, presentation trends are popular because they are effective when communicating to an audience while also drawing the eye.

Let's Dive Into Some Of The Latest Presentation Design Trends

A modern presentation usually involves set color palettes, asymmetric layouts, different shape s, and other design elements.

Let’s take a look at a few of the modern presentations and modern design trends for 2023 that you might consider using for your next presentation.

Abstract Shapes That Dominate Slides

2023 presentation trends

One of the popular presentation design trends taking over the digital world right now is abstract and geometric shapes. Whether you’re creating a Google Slides, Prezi, Canva, or PowerPoint presentation design, shapes, and image overlays can be a great way to take your presentations from boring to bold.

In this example here , triangle shapes and images have been used to keep and direct the attention of the audience.

2023 presentation trends

It’s also important to note that these shapes and elements don’t take away from the content on the slides, rather, they create an engaging slide that piques the viewer’s visual interest and keeps them informed.

Unique AI Generated Motion Graphics & Images

Another design trend we see emerging in 2023 is the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Designers utilize programs to create animated graphics, images, flowing shapes, and other design elements.

AI generated graphics can be used to create a unique design and custom images for your business slide decks. This, along with the growing demand for virtual reality likely means we will see increased use of Artificial Intelligence throughout the graphic design industry.

Inclusive Visuals, Graphics and Fonts

A big presentation design trend we have seen in the past couple of years and into 2023 is the use of inclusive visuals. The graphic design industry has seen a big move towards accessibility and inclusivity. This has meant using different shapes, fonts, and images that reflect a more inclusive community.

Not only do these inclusive visuals, graphics, and fonts have visual appeal, but they also mean that your presentations and slides are more accessible to a larger audience.

Modern Minimalism - Say More With Less

2023 presentation trends

A design trend we are seeing pop up across a lot of different industries is a kind of modern minimalism. The famous saying goes “keep it simple, stupid” and you could argue that the same applies to PowerPoint presentations.

While a trendy PowerPoint presentation design, neon colors, and colorful text blocks might initially grab the eyes, it can also distract your audience and take away from the information you are trying to communicate.

In this example below, we’ve created modern slides for Indigo that lean towards a minimalistic style. The presentation uses their brand palette and custom fonts to great an engaging presentation with a personal touch that doesn’t distract the viewer.

Dark Modes - Sleek and Secure

2023 presentation trends

One of the popular graphic design trends for 2023 utilizes dark mode and dark backgrounds to make their slides stand out in the crowd without overwhelming the audience.

A dark background and dark theme can create depth in your graphic designs which can pull your audience in.

These dark PowerPoint presentation trends don’t necessarily require you only to use blacks and greys in your color schemes. Instead, you can use different shades of some dark colors that will create a dark mode style of presentation.

T he end result is something that the audience expects but still engages them throughout your presentation.

Making An Impact With Muted Images

2023 presentation trends

While color palettes, bold color blocks, serif fonts, and other design trends all seem to be on the rise, current presentation design trends have also seen an increased use of muted image overlays.

Muted images are images that have been edited with a filter that dulls the brightness and makes them a bit moodier. Instead of immediately grabbing the eye of the viewer, these images blend more into the background and can create more depth in your presentations.

BIG, Bold Backgrounds

2023 presentation trends

One last new trend we’ve seen in presentations this year is big, bold style, particularly when it comes to the background. With eye-catching backgrounds, you can immediately grab your audience’s attention and keep them engaged throughout the entire presentation.

While a minimalistic trend may cater to certain audiences, big backgrounds can help you stand out in the crowd.

When it comes to taking design tips, you need to consider your content, your audience, and your overall brand identity. So while nature-inspired themes and geometric shapes might work for some brands, bold colors, big backgrounds, and fun fonts might work for others.

In this example for the Seatle Krakken , we’ve matched the vibe of the sports brand with bright colors and bold backgrounds.

In a little while, we'll look at the classic design trends from last year. But before we jump into that, there are some brand new design trends for 2024 you need to know.

Whether you're looking for trending PowerPoint templates or for presentation trends for 2024, this list covers it all. Keep reading to find out more:

1. Nature-Inspired Design

Nature inspired presentations can give the audience a sense of calmness.

Nature-inspired design is one of the top presentation trends in 2024. This trend has changed . It's now about portraying tranquility, inner peace, and harmony.

You can add nature-inspired graphics from Envato Elements to add more nature elements to your presentation slide. When going for a nature-inspired design, you want to have muted earth tones that feature natural materials, textures, and shapes.

2. Live Polling

Another trending slide ideas for 2024 is to have live polling in your presentation design. This can look like a link to a live poll, or you can include a picture of the poll results in your presentation.

A live poll allows presenters to know what the audience is thinking. It can also enable the audience to give their opinions.

3. Video Integration

Videos can make your presentation more engaging for the audience.

If you're looking for presentation design ideas, try adding video integration into your PowerPoint. There are many different ways that you can add video:

  • Use a video as a product demonstration to help your audience know more about a specific product.
  • Use a video to enhance your storytelling.

Videos can help add an emotional aspect to your presentation.

4. Expressive and Inclusive Artistry

Inclusive design is a great way to show you care about others.

A presentation trend in 2024 is to have a presentation design that includes diverse personalities and characters.

Embrace inclusive design and visuals that represent people of every age, race, gender, orientation. Also look for designs that show a range of visible and invisible disabilities as active members of society. You can do this by using genuine illustrations and designs that look homey.

Also include bold fonts and expressive visuals. This is an emotional style, so it looks good with a planned layout and inclusive images from Envato Elements.

5. Story-Driven Data

Data will help you present your story to an audience and make it more credible.

This PowerPoint presentation design tends to use data to tell a story. Use the data to create a narrative for the audience that'll resonate with them.

You want the data to make the information more relatable and memorable for the audience. When a story is relatable, there is a higher chance they'll remember your story.

If you don’t have a lot of data in your presentation, try using survey data. You can include those surveys and their sources in your presentation if you need more data to back up your story.

Iceberg infographic best presentation design

Audiences want to see information presented in new and fresh ways. Gone are the days of slides filled with text that an audience is expected to read through. Try using an infographic that combines the two.

4. More Images, Less Text

If you plotted " attention spans " on a chart, you'd see that the trend is downward! That's why it helps to adapt your content to reality by using less text.

Image centric presentation design

If there's one point I coach presenters on, it's this: delete half the content on your slides before you present . Chances are, much of your text should be converted to  speaking  points instead of written. Images are a great bridge to more visual slides.

Learn more pro PowerPoint design tips to reduce the text in our article below:

5. Heavy Use of Charts and Graphs

Not every set of data lends itself to an infographic. Sometimes, you'll need to show your data in illustrative charts and graphs. That helps you show PPT trends over time that support your speaking points.

Charts in recent trends PPT

10. Minimalism Becomes the Norm

The trend of minimalism in PowerPoint designs has been on the rise in recent years. Minimalist slides eschew wordy and complicated slides for simpler alternatives.

Minimalism is yet another way to help your audience focus on the content that matters most. Less is more. With fewer slide objects, your audience's eyes naturally follow your crucial point.

So, what do you do? The answer is you flip the format of the presentation. Engage them with questions, ask for their opinion, and start a dialogue.

12. Heavy Use of Trendy Colors

No organization knows more about color than  Pantone.  Every year, they act as the voice of design trends by naming a color of the year.

Peach Fuzz is Pantone 's 2024 Color of the Year. But keep in mind, Pantone not only reports trends, they also play a role in shaping  those PPT trends.

Pantone's color of the year for 2024 is Peach Fuzz. You're going to see these everywhere this year.

Some colors are timeless, and there's a time and place for all of them. But it doesn't hurt to look at current presentation design trends and use them as you see fit. See more popular color schemes in the guide below:

5 Tips for the Best Presentation Design in 2024

Before picking out your presentation template, consider these design trends:

Minimal PowerPoint Presentation

Minimal design has been a PowerPoint trend for a long time. It'll most likely stay that way. Minimal design is classic and clean looking.

When there's too much on a slide, it can be overwhelming for the audience. A presentation with a minimal design looks more professional than a presentation full of slides with too much on them.

2. Nature-Inspired

Nature-inspired is a newer presentation design trend that became popular in 2023 and is continuing into 2024. This trend can feature colors that remind you of nature. These colors can be earth tones like brown and green.

Another nature-inspired design trend is to have flowers, leaves, or other natural elements in the design. A nature-inspired theme can relax and calm your audience. In fact, the newest nature-inspired themes are all about tranquility and harmony.

Pastel PowerPoint Presentation

Pastels can feel comforting and warm to your audience. This presentation design trend adds color without distracting your audience. Pastel colors can go with any subject that you want to make your presentation on.

4. Geometric Shapes

Geometric Shapes are simple, but modern and fun. This presentation trend can also have a retro feel making the audience feel nostalgic. A geometric design trend adds depth to your slide without being distracting for your audience.

5. Dark Background With Neon

PowerPoint Presentation with a Dark Background and Neon Colors

The dark background with neon PowerPoint design trend is great if you want a playful color scheme and design. A dark background is like dark mode on your phone or computer. This gives more contrast to the colors in the design, making them pop.

2023 presentation trends

Ah! 2023 has dawned and it’s full of fresh possibilities and new opportunities for effective communication. Like boy scouts, BrightCarbon is always prepared. So, we asked our designers and presentation experts what they expect 2023 to bring for presentation design. Is it new year, new you? Or business as usual? The results are in!

The big hitters…

Accessibility

Improved accessibility came out on top, with 40% of our presentation designers naming it as a key area of development for presentations and presentation creation platforms in 2023. Both PowerPoint and Google Slides are regularly adding new features, making it easier for users to create more accessible presentations. So, we’re expecting increased use of alt text, better adherence to contrast guidelines , and an improved understanding of screen-reader compatibility. We’re also expecting to see more requests for presentation slides with room left at the bottom for live caption generation.

As presentations are usually mediated by a presenter, presentation accessibility is a fairly complex topic. If you’re creating your own decks, you might find this starter guide useful: 5 tips for more accessible presentations .

Interactivity

The silver medal goes to interactivity – predicted to be a trend by a third of our designers. Presenters wanting to have better conversations with their audience will lean on presentations with robust navigation to facilitate agile, non-linear paths through their content. Most importantly, with proper menus and navigation, everyone avoids the awkward spectacle of a presenter exiting Show Mode and scrolling through their slides to find what they need. The good news is that it’s pretty easy to add basic interactivity to your decks in PowerPoint and Google Slides .

Our presentation experts expect these interactive presentations to be large, modular decks designed to be broken up into smaller, more targeted presentations. These decks will empower presenters to have better, more flexible conversations. On the one hand, decks like these give salespeople the flexibility they need whilst protecting carefully crafted structure and messaging. On the other, they can quickly become scarily long and unwieldy and your salespeople might need a specialised tool, like our PowerPoint add-in ShowMaker , to stay in control!

We’re also predicting more audience interaction, including live surveys, use of tools like Mentimeter , and the triumphant return of the QR code – all boosting audience engagement and helping presenters collect useful data and feedback.

Our final big hitter is doing diversity better. Our clients want their presentation design to reflect the diversity of their organisations in authentic and meaningful ways. So, we’re looking forward to celebrating diversity through imagery and illustrations, as well as through the stories we’re telling.

A specific focus we’re expecting for 2023 is an awareness of disability diversity. Poor disability representation can look like a token image of someone in a wheelchair – let’s leave this behind in 2022. As explored in Getty Images’ VisualGPS , good disability representation means representing people with a range of visible and invisible disabilities as active members of society across ages and intersecting identity factors.

Honourable mentions…

Though some things are returning to how they were pre-Covid, many won’t be the same again. One reversal we’re not expecting is a complete return to in-person presenting, so don’t delete your custom Zoom backgrounds just yet!

With more flexible working, asynchronous knowledge transfer is becoming more and more popular. We’re expecting an uptick in requests for self-running, scripted videos. Whether it’s talking-head videos or illustrative dynamic animations, videos with bold colours and diverse characters that your audience can enjoy when and where they like are going to be crowd-pleasers in 2023.

With in-person conferences ramping up again, we’re expecting the return of beautiful, bespoke decks developed for specific events. With presenters tackling unusual screen sizes and configurations, big audiences in big rooms, and online and offline attendees – getting a specialist in can really make a difference.

And, as we all pack our bags and jet off to network, BrightCarbon’s presentation design experts are expecting 2023 to bring more requests for one-pagers, leave behinds, and worksheets for in-person events with clear, engaging storytelling and visuals.

Are the robots taking over?

Like most of you, our presentation experts are keeping a beady eye on the robots – and by that we mean AI design. Though AI-generated art is still novel, images generated by AI following user prompts could allow presentation designers to create things that stand out from the generic stock photos others are using – they could even avoid some of the copyright implications of sourcing photos on Google. That said, there are ethical questions about AI generated art that we should be aware of. Will AI art help truly visualise meaning? Probably not. Will everyone be sick of it by the end of the year? Probably! Will everyone try it anyway? Yes, yes they will.

Beauty is in the eye… Presentation design trends for 2023

So, those are the key presentations trends we expect to see in 2023, but what about the design trends that will transform our slides from dull to dazzling this year? Here’s what our presentation design experts predict:

  • Clean, minimal design is going nowhere, so expect to see slides with plenty of white space, clear hierarchy, and minimal text on lots of corporate decks this year. However, where there is colour, it’s going to be bold and vibrant making these slides stand out from the crowd.
  • Gradients are here to stay. They’ve been popular in graphic design for a while and were gaining popularity in presentation design in 2022. A twist we’re expecting in 2023 is custom mesh gradients.
  • In 2023 presentation design, we’ll see less hand-drawn/doodly animations, but patterns and textures will be popular, replacing flat colours in backgrounds and vector illustrations.
  • The new year will bring a touch of nostalgia with it – our presentation designers predict grainy textures and serif fonts to make a comeback.

Now you’ve read BrightCarbon’s predictions for 2023 presentation design trends, it’s time to share yours! Let us know what you’re hoping to see on slides across the world this year in the comments below!

Why so many corporate presentations look rubbish

  • Industry insights

PowerPoint gives people a lot of freedom, but in a large organisation this can be more of a curse than a blessing. Most employees aren’t designers so it can take them a long time to make presentations, and PowerPoint can encourage the wrong behaviour (not least with its famous ‘Click to add text’ instruction!). How can you improve your corporate presentations?

10 Presentation Design Trends to Try in 2023

Whether you’re an employee delivering a presentation on a recent project, a business owner pitching your services to new customers, or a student delivering a class presentation, making the right impression on your audience requires designing an eye-catching and eye-pleasing presentation.

One way to accomplish this goal is to familiarize yourself with the latest presentation design trends. Specific examples to keep in mind when designing your next presentation include:

An Emphasis on Minimalism

Effective presentation design involves striking a delicate balance. On the one hand, you want the slides of a presentation to be visually interesting enough to engage an audience. On the other hand, you need to ensure your audience absorbs the information being presented. Bombarding them with excessive visual stimulation could prevent audience members from retaining a presentation’s content.

Many are striking this balance by embracing minimalism. Instead of cluttering their slides with various images, they’re using a few larger images to ensure a cleaner look. Rather than going overboard with a wide-ranging color palette and numerous typography choices, they’re sticking to only two or three colors and fonts.

(Tip: When choosing a color scheme for your presentation design, study color theory to determine which colors represent your brand and trigger the appropriate emotional response in your audience.)

Expressive Text

Traditionally, the visual elements of a slideshow have been the most attention-grabbing, while text has usually been a more “boring” component.

That’s changing. Increasingly, presentation design experts have been experimenting with ways to make text come alive and capture an audience’s attention. Ways to achieve this goal may include:

  • Animating text
  • Using custom fonts
  • Using 3D text

Animation can serve many purposes in a presentation. The following are just a few examples:

  • Telling a story to boost the content’s overall persuasiveness
  • Illustrating complex concepts and ideas
  • Establishing a brand with animated characters who represent an organization’s branded “personality”
  • Adding humor to a presentation, making it more entertaining (and thus more engaging)

Visual Storytelling

Even if you don’t incorporate animation into a presentation, you might nevertheless account for the current presentation design trend of visual storytelling when deciding how to hit certain essential points.

For example, perhaps you’re delivering a sales pitch. Your goal might be to illustrate how your products or services solve a common problem for your customers. One way to do so is through a series of pictures telling a story about a character who faces the same problem your customers face, only to overcome it with the help of your products.

A series of photos is just one potential visual storytelling strategy. For instance, if a comic is more brand-appropriate, you could include a comic instead of a photo series in your presentation.

Prioritizing Accessibility

Presentation design isn’t just about ensuring a presentation looks impressive. It’s also about ensuring as many audience members as possible can absorb the presentation’s content.

Ways to make a presentation more accessible include:

  • Using captions during videos
  • Including the option to turn on audio narration and descriptions for blind audience members
  • Designing multiple versions of a presentation in different languages
  • Avoiding excessive usage of cultural idioms and slang that might alienate or confuse audience members from different cultures

Large Blocks of Vibrant Text

Instead of including substantial amounts of relatively small text on individual presentation slides, consider using fewer words per slide but opting for larger font sizes and more vibrant colors. This is another way you can use text to capture the attention of audience members while still adhering to a relatively minimalist presentation design style.

Many people already opt to use dark mode when viewing their phones and tablets in order to reduce eye strain. Website and app designers have taken note, making design choices that are compatible with dark mode, such as:

  • Ensuring there’s a reasonably strong contrast between background and text/images
  • Testing color choices in dark mode to confirm they still look pleasing
  • Using dark gray instead of pure black
  • Using off-white fonts instead of pure white fonts

This trend has also begun influencing presentation design. Keep it in mind when designing your slides.

A Return to Serif Fonts

Anything a person sees on a slide in one of your presentations can tell them something about your brand. As such, it’s important to remember that there are no color schemes, fonts, or other such elements that are ideal for all presentations. You need to be certain the visual aspects of a presentation correspond with your branded identity.

That said, Serif typography is making a comeback in presentation design. Because Serif fonts may appear somewhat traditional or old-fashioned, they’ve come to convey a sense of timeless authority.

Muted Images

Are you looking for a way to include more interesting images in your presentation slides without the slides looking too busy? If so, consider muting images so they blend in more with the background. This simple presentation design technique allows you to add more images while maintaining a clean sense of visual consistency.

AI-Generated Images

Thanks to AI programs, designers can now generate various types of images in just a few moments. As such, they’re experimenting with AI images, using AI to develop imagery that would normally take hours or even days to generate.

It’s not necessarily wise to use all the images that an AI program generates. These tools are simply giving presentation designers more creative freedom to experiment with imagery than ever before.

2023 Presentation Design Trends to Keep in Mind

Consider these presentation design ideas the next time you need to put together a visually-appealing presentation that’s both attractive and informative. By accounting for current trends and using the right tools, even someone with minimal design experience can create a presentation that resonates with audience members.

Example of two minimalist slides with limited blue and white color pallet, lots of space between text, and no imagery.

The concept of minimalism has been around for a while and continues to be a top presentation trend. The focus is on simplicity, with a clean and uncluttered layout that allows your message to stand out. Use of whitespace, simple typography, and a limited color palette can help you achieve a minimalist look.

Interactive elements

Interactive elements are not a new presentation trend, but they continue to gain popularity in 2023. Adding interactive elements like quizzes, polls, and clickable infographics can help engage your audience and make your presentation more memorable.

Bold typography

Example of a slide with an eye-catching, classic font choice (similar to times new roman).

In 2023, typography will play a significant role in presentation trends. Bold typography can help emphasize important points, create contrast, and add visual interest to your slides. Sans-serif fonts like Helvetica and Arial will be popular choices for presentation design.

Example of 5 dark mode slides, all with a dark black background and white text.

Dark mode has been a popular trend in app and website design for a while. Now, it has made its way into presentation design trends. Dark backgrounds with light text can help reduce eye strain and create a sleek and modern look.

Motion graphics

Motion graphics are a great way to add a dynamic element to your presentation. They can be used to animate graphs, charts, and other visual elements. In 2023, we will see more use of motion graphics in presentations to add a wow factor and engage the audience.

Custom illustrations

Example of three slides featuring colorful custom illustrations and icons.

Custom illustrations can add a personal touch to your presentation and make it stand out. In 2023, we will see more use of hand-drawn illustrations as a presentation design trend. Above all, custom illustrations can add warmth and a human touch to your presentations.

Sustainability

Example of sustainable postcard that says "You've played a huge role in making the world more human friendly".

As sustainability continues to be a hot topic, we will see more use of eco-friendly design elements in presentations. This includes the use of recycled paper for handouts, reducing paper waste, and using sustainable materials for presentation materials.

Incorporating these top 2023 presentation design trends will help you create engaging and memorable presentations. Whether you’re using PowerPoint, Google Slides, Keynote, or another presentation tool, these trends can help you stay ahead of the curve and make a lasting impression on your audience. So, embrace these trends and make your next presentation a success!

There are new design trends that grab our attention each year that can make your presentation timely and contemporary. This blog will discuss our predicted design trends for presentation slides in 2023 as well as what elements make a presentation trendy at any point in time. close

Who said that presentations can’t be on trend? Believe it or not, the world of presentation design is not immune to the styles and fads of the design world. You can prove that your brand is fresh and contemporary through the presentation design of your slides. But tastes change, and as we approach the new year, the trend cycle will change and bring new ideas to the forefront of graphic design.

However, there are presentation trends that will always be timeless. These elements will always make a presentation appeal to the audience, no matter what. They grab the audience’s attention right away and hold onto it throughout. So regardless of the trend cycle, these points consistently boost any presentation and are important to keep in mind.

Timeless presentation features:

Engaging and interactive content.

The core of any presentation is the material and how it is shared. It is not enough to list facts; there needs to be room to breathe. By including icebreakers, games, polls, and activities, the listener can directly interact with the information and ideas shared. It bridges the gap between them and gives the audience a chance to connect with the content.

Use of data and visualizations

When data is visualized in charts, graphs, or infographics , is easier to understand. It is helpful for your audience to have a visual medium that they can follow that simplifies your data for them to understand. With the sheer volume of information available, data visualization helps guide the audience through your ideas and data in a way that doesn’t overwhelm them.

Storytelling

Stories have a universal appeal. People relate to them and they can never fail you. Spinning together a story draws the audience into your world, evokes empathy, and establishes a level of trust. Learning how to tell a story is more effective than learning how to persuade. A story can simplify a complex idea while moving your audience to action.

Creative and unique designs

A good presentation design relies on its creative use of design elements, colors, and images. Creative slide design maintains its impact the same way it maintains the audience’s attention. Using engaging design trends can also help explain your ideas more effectively and support your presentation’s flow.

7 Presentation Trends in 2023

The presentation trend cycle is similar to the regular design trend cycle, which makes it easier for our presentation experts to predict what presentation design trends will take over in 2023. There is an emphasis on connecting with your audience in a new way inspired by the Internet age and social media.

01 Dark mode

In interface design, the increasing preference for dark mode for mobile users has translated to incorporating the dark style into web design. For a long and extensive presentation, it is wise to go for a sleek and dim aesthetic that is easier on the eyes and can maintain focus for longer.

Dark mode UX/UI

02 3D graphics

The rise of VR technology, the metaverse, and the love of all things Y2K have revived a strong interest in 3D graphics. Creating a visual experience that draws the viewer into the image has a powerful appeal across several mediums that could continue to rise. 3D backgrounds go beyond the clever use of shadows and now use texture and motion for a touch of attention-grabbing realism.

3D design

03 Experimental typography

Fun and experimental typography are having a moment this year, becoming more popular for film and TV posters. Playing around with different typefaces is a fun approach for your slides to illustrate your brand identity and mission. Serif fonts, in particular, are making a comeback as they are legible, bold, and graceful, achieving both a practical and aesthetic function.

Typography

04 Monochrome

Monochrome color palettes are made by selecting a single color and its various hues. Following the idea of a more comfortable aesthetic, the monochrome trend is simple, practical, and elegant. On another note, a simple color scheme helps brand recognition when creating a presentation design built around the brand’s primary color.

Monochrome design

05 Inclusive visuals

Beyond the world of graphic design, there has been a surge in efforts to include individuals of different cultures, backgrounds, ages, disabilities, locations, and classes. In presentation design, this translates into an effort to showcase a variety of people in the illustrations and visuals used to celebrate diversity.

Inclusive design

06 Branded memes

Memes are an essential part of the fabric of social media; they’re perfect for adding a touch of humor to your presentation. Adapting memes to fit your brand makes your slides more relatable, and adding humor to your presentation helps build a connection with your audience. The art of a tastefully utilized meme can be tricky, but all in all, the main rule is to avoid a controversial meme and stick to a lighthearted approach.

Design Meme

07 Bold and vibrant colors

In previous years, we’ve seen a rise in minimalist and muted styles. But now, designers and viewers alike yearn for a return to brighter and bolder colors. Vibrant colors create attractive and energetic designs, especially when contrasting the trend of geometric and clean shapes. This style doesn’t use these hues as an accent or emphasis, rather they are the design itself.

Bold design

What should you do for a rich and trendy presentation?

Note that presentation trends go beyond quirky graphics and thoughtful color palettes. As technology evolves and progresses, we expect presentation design and graphic design to evolve alongside it. Slide design is an essential component of your presentation, but they are in no way the core, rather they are the starting point. These are factors to consider that will make your presentation stand out from your slides:

Going beyond PowerPoint

As we mentioned, PowerPoint is merely the starting point. But what comes after it? Earlier, we mentioned how interactive games and icebreakers allow your audience to connect with the material. They can also switch up the pace with a diverse approach. Another way to branch out of the typical presentation format is to add videos that can further simplify and explain your point. Hand out brochures as tactile souvenirs that summarize your presentation to leave your listeners with. Have a questions and answers session afterward to open up room for any further inquiries.

Making it mobile-compatible

It is not uncommon for presentation slides to become resources that are reused and revisited. When designing your presentation, make sure that whatever design trend you opt for can be adapted to different formats. The key to a mobile-friendly presentation is simplicity. Increasing the font size, creating cleaner visuals and charts, using mobile-friendly resolutions, and exporting the final product as a PDF.

Utilizing new technology

If you’re ready to truly go above and beyond for a presentation, utilizing new technologies is a surefire way to stand apart from the competition. New technologies now grant new ways for presenters and audiences to interact with and visualize the material. From holograms to augmented reality to real-time data visualization, these technologies offer exciting opportunities to explore ideas and concepts through an original and stimulating channel.

Incorporating presentation design trends into your slides ensures that your brand is as relevant as ever. As graphic design evolves as a field, there will be a trickle-down effect that reaches presentation design. Presenters and designers alike are constantly thinking of new and innovative ways to share ideas, so why not ride the wave?

Top Presentation Design Trends to Look Out for in 2023

Ashish Arora

Graphic design trends usually change due to various factors such as political events, world crises, progress in the business world, the evolution of new technologies, etc. All these factors collectively lead to the development of dynamic design trends.

Well, the coming year will witness nostalgic designs that bring a sense of comfort. New design trends are curated for an audience that is always looking for something new and fresh, such as millennials.

Let us have a look at the presentation design trends for 2023.

1. The Newest Vogue Will Be Dark Mode

With the world running online, there has been a drastic increase in people’s screen times, which has caused most of us to shift to the dark modes on our cell phones.

Well, the same goes for presentations. Presentations usually require a person to look at the screen, read and comprehend. The dark mode emits lesser blue light and reduces a person’s eye strain. Hence, this has become a popular vogue and will remain a constant trend for the digital years to come.

Here are a few reasons to use the Dark Mode in your 2023 presentations-

  • Makes the content shine without putting in much effort.
  • Allows readers to easily read even on smaller screens.
  • Helps create a sense of security and certainty and showcases professionalism.
  • Contrasts with other colors and makes your slides stand out.

Here are examples of presentations in dark mode –

Dark Mode Screenshot

2. Colorful Text Blocks Will Be the Highlight of 2023

Gone are the days when monochromatic presentations ruled the digital world. Colors are the newest trend for the year 2023. Colors not only highlight abstract elements on your slides, but also make the overall presentation more visually appealing and captivating.

Colorful blocks are dynamic elements and can be used strategically to make your presentations stand out. For instance, if your slides do not have enough images, you can cover some spaces with colorful blocks and add text. You can also use colors to throw some light on your brand palette and communicate your company’s branding flawlessly.

Here is an example of how using a set of colors can highlight your brand’s palette and help establish your company’s image in the audience’s minds.

3. Abstract Shapes Will Take Over the Slides

While a previous couple of years saw a rise in design trends that included geometric shapes, the coming year will be dominated by abstract shapes and elements. It includes curvy elements being displayed as backdrops of slides, abstract shapes being used to highlight information, etc.

Here are a few reasons why abstract shapes are worth the hype –

  • They will instantly catch your audience’s attention.
  • Unusual or abstract shapes will help maintain your viewer’s focus.
  • They make your presentations lively and attractive.
  • They are versatile and can be used to convey any kind of information.

4. Minimal Tones Will Be the New Aesthetic

Minimal tones are the aesthetics that have been dominating the field for a while now and are here to stay for the year 2023. These tones include neutral shades that have a warmth of browns and light tones of white.

While each color has its own symbolism, these tones of beige and brown convey warmth, comfort, resilience, and faith. Hence, these are popularly used in presentations to usually build trust and depict the company as reliable and unswerving.

Here are a few ways how you can incorporate minimal tones in your presentations –

  • Use a neutral tone as the background color.
  • Highlight headings with beige and brown shades.
  • Use white as a backdrop for images and overlays.

5. Talk of the Town in 2023 – Animated Graphics & Virtual Reality

The animation and motion visual trend is here to add life to your presentations. The growing demand for virtual reality and 3D experiences has changed the face of the graphic industry.

Businesses need to incorporate motions, animations, and 3D graphics into their presentations to meet the expectations of their audiences. Thus, whether you are into education, technology, or services, you must include this design trend in your creative presentations.

Here are a few ways to incorporate animated graphics and virtual reality into your slides-

  • Use animations to demonstrate product application.
  • Develop VR experiences to showcase the manufacturing process of your products.
  • Convert images to AI-generated graphics for team introductions.

6. Bold Backgrounds Will Be the Latest Obsession

2023 will be the year of using bold and impressive backgrounds in your presentations. This trend will be a show stealer throughout the year, as it complements the trend of incorporating abstract shapes and colorful blocks.

If you are in a creative industry, this trend can be strategically used to convey your message and establish your niche in the market.

7. 2023 Will Be the Year of Inclusive Visuals and Graphics

Inclusivity is a movement that covers all aspects of life, such as gender, race, culture, accessibility, etc. It will be well-reflected in the upcoming graphic and design trends, as it will open doors to better representation opportunities. It allows people to connect better with businesses and brands, as it enables them to see themselves being represented in campaigns through inclusive visuals.

Inclusive Visuals and Graphics

8. Serif Fonts Will Make a Comeback

Design trends repeat themselves over the years, and this font style will be here to stay for a while. Serif fonts showcase a sense of tradition, commitment, and security, and hence are being widely used in presentations and designs.

Here are a few reasons why you should use Serif fonts in your slides –

  • They are the symbol of professionalism and depict consistency.
  • They can be used for highlighting titles, headings, and sub-headings.
  • Serif fonts easily blend with most kinds of designs, color palettes, and dynamic themes.

9. Botanicals and Nature Inspired Elements Will Gain Massive Traction

With the rise of environmental crises, there has also been an increase in awareness among people. This is quite visible in the current presentation trends and graphic designs as companies have been focusing on showcasing their concern for the cause.

Usage of botanical graphics and symbols of earth and trees have been in use for some time now. With companies being endowed with corporate responsibilities towards the environment and the rise of more environment-friendly industries, nature-inspired visuals and graphics will be the biggest trend of 2023.

Botanicals and Nature Inspired Elements Screenshot 1

To stay at the top of your game, it is extremely crucial to keep up with the latest presentation design trends. While there may be a dozen trending designs, it is important for companies to carefully pick the ones that would suit their brand the most and help them communicate their message efficiently. If you find it burdensome to find the latest trends, draft presentations and design your slides from scratch, you can use expert-designed presentation templates that can be customized according to your requirements.

Marvelous Must-Have Presentation Design Trends in 2023

PowerPoint Presentation design has undergone a lot of changes since people first began designing presentations. Today, a basic presentation design, created with simple PowerPoint slides doesn’t have much of an impact in the corporate world. This means we need to get creative. Technology advances and businesses have become increasingly competitive. Therefore, we can’t deny that there is a real need to stay current and look for newer and better presentation design trends in 2023.

So, whether you want to create a great pitch deck that stands out or simply ensure that every visual in your annual reports or sales presentations is eye-catching, you have to check out these must-have presentation design trends that will ensure your message gets heard.

The Focus is on Retro and Bold Color Combinations

Presentation designers typically love to use bright colors when designing presentations. However, most presentations must be designed keeping companies’ brand colors and guidelines in mind. This means essentially using neutral, unassuming colors that make things clean, professional-looking, and elegant but not necessarily inspiring.

This year, as far as color trends go, everyone’s poised to go for retro and bold color combinations to really make a statement. Therefore, if there’s a chance to create presentations that are engaging, and memorable, this could be the year to do so.

This year, Pantone’s Color of the Year is Viva Magenta. Magenta is an unusually gorgeous and vibrant color that most people commonly describe as pinkish-purplish-red, reddish-purplish-pink, or mauvish-crimson. Now, it is not a color that’s easily incorporated into corporate presentations because of brand guidelines. However, there may be other ways to incorporate it into the presentation design. For example, one way is to highlight key metrics and other essential information in this color or a variant. Another way is to set it as a background color on all your slides or every alternate slide to offer some kind of contrast.

Remember that the right color combinations help you create presentations that grab your audience’s attention instantly. However, don’t go overboard and combine too many bright colors or your presentation design will look garish, untidy, and unprofessional.

More Animations and Virtual Reality to Help Engage the Audience

Most presentations are created for official purposes, making them quite staid and uninspiring. However, there is a way to still keep them professional looking and sounding and yet make them engaging and memorable. The secret to doing this is to incorporate animations and even a little bit of Virtual Reality into your slides.

Animations can be used to add a touch of flair to your presentation. They allow you to show movement, direct the viewer’s attention, and create a whole new level of engagement. You can also use them to add emphasis to certain points or to provide a visual aid for complex concepts. Animations are also an easy and great way to illustrate a timeline or show the relationship between two or more points.

Including virtual reality in your presentation can also take it to the next level. With virtual reality, you can take your audience on a virtual tour of the topic or present a project or product in a unique way. Virtual reality can provide an immersive experience that allows your audience to have a deeper understanding of the subject matter.

Remember that you need to stay aware of new or even revamped presentation design trends in 2023. Using animations and virtual reality in your presentation is a great way to keep your presentation professional and still make it engaging and memorable. Instead of having a boring and stagnant presentation, adding these elements can help you create an impactful and memorable experience for your audience.

Bigger Backgrounds to Become More Popular

2023 is set to be a big year for businesses, as they look to make a lasting impact with their presentations. With the right visuals and creative design, presentations can really stand out and draw the audience’s attention. This means staying on top of all the presentation design trends in 2023.

Bigger background images, bigger images in title slides, and flowing shapes are some of the most effective ways to make sure your presentation stands out. People are more likely to pay attention to visuals that are bold and eye-catching, so it pays to invest in visuals that make an impact.

When it comes to background images, you don’t have to go overboard. Choose an image that is striking and memorable, but also reflects the overall message of your presentation. The key here is to make sure that the image you choose is relevant to the topic you are discussing and isn’t too distracting. The same goes for the images in your title slides. Make sure they are relevant and meaningful, and not just random pictures or graphics.

Finally, you can use flowing shapes to add a creative touch to your presentation. This can be anything from a simple circle or triangle to a more complex graphic. Flowing shapes give your presentation a sense of movement and interest, keeping your audience engaged and interested.

It’s Time to Introduce AI-generated Imagery in Your Work

The world of presentation design is in a constant state of evolution. Each passing year, we see an increase in the use of different tools and techniques to create stunning visuals that elevate the viewing experience. Over the past few years, we have seen image grids, muted images, branded filters, and image overlays, all of which have been used to add interest and visual appeal to presentation design.

This year, AI-generated imagery is set to take presentation design to the next level. Designers are now able to make use of AI-generated images and videos to create more engaging visuals that capture the attention of their audience.

One of the biggest advantages of this kind of imagery is that designers can create images that are unique, creative, and visually appealing. Unlike traditional imagery, which is often generic and uninspiring, AI-generated imagery is tailored to the specific needs of the presentation, allowing designers to create visuals that are perfectly suited to the content they are trying to communicate.

Another benefit of AI-generated imagery is that it can be used in a variety of different ways. For example, AI-generated images can be used as background images to create visual interest, or as an overlay to add depth and texture to the presentation. AI-generated videos can also be used to create engaging and interactive presentations that engage the audience.

Overall, AI-generated imagery is set to be one of the biggest presentation design trends in 2023. With AI-generated images and videos, designers have more opportunities than ever before to create visuals that captivate and engage their audiences. It’s time to get creative and start exploring the possibilities of AI-generated imagery!

The biggest trends in graphic design for presentations in 2022/2023

Presentation trends are movements in the slide design that have been used extensively. They are not necessarily new, but they are recognized now, inspired from, and recommended for you to remain recognized as well. When you follow trends in presentation design, you impress your clients, remain competitive, or even set your trends for the next year.

We’ve done some research, and here are 6 presentation design trends for 2022/2023.

Monochromatic Design

Pure color or one color in different shades is what people prefer in slides now. They are tired of headlines where each letter stands for another color. The simpler, the better is the new black. Additionally, simpler color in the whole design branding is important for brand recognition and its ability to influence the industry.

Everyone knows the shade of Coca-Cola’s red or white and gray Apple combination. Thus, we will see more companies using average colors and subtle tonal differences to look modern.

Important: Do not misplace 3D Realism with the 3D illustration.

Now, tech companies are celebrating this trend most because it recalls the development of augmented and virtual reality. Thus, they are first to do any desirable form of 3D within their branding or web design to give a sense of depth. The design will change forever over the next few years, and hyper-realistic works will be an assertive part of it.

If tech development relates to your business, you should order a presentation with 3D elements to visualize the story and show the company’s level with references to slide trends 2022.

Serif Typefaces

Typical Times New Roman or Georgia has long been abandoned because people preferred funky Serifs. But old school is coming back with the 2022 presentation trends of simplicity. People are moving away from standard Sans Serif fonts (Arial, Calibri, Helvetica). And it also means we will see more creative versions of Serif.

Check this guide on How to select and use fonts in PowerPoint.

Nevertheless, Sans Serif may still be used for specific functional things in videos or as a part of your brand. For example, Facebook’s rebranding into Meta is made with the most inoffensive, while the futuristic logo and Sans Serif font.

Kinetic Typography

This trend belongs to animations, added to presentations by most creators. Such artworks, like gifs, frequently display turbulent words. You should have seen many typography effects in lyric videos, which we definitely recommend to inspire from for your modern slides.

This year, typography is becoming more than a trend because it allows people to read along with creative expression. Thus, you can transform simple headings on slides into ones with moving letters, which keeps engagement higher. Or you can create a data visualization presentation by moving texts and numbers.

Hyper MNMLSM

Disclaimer: Minimalism will not work for every presentation or brand, and the individual approach should always be embedded. Minimalism is not the be-all or fix-all of every design problem, so implement it wisely.

Some of you in or out of the design industry may hate minimalistic or simplified logos. Even though it feels corporate, the more simplistic logo, the less offensive and easier it is to remember. These are the facts and PowerPoint presentation trends nowadays. Whether you like it or not:)

And this movement will not stop because it is just ramping up its momentum. Burger King, Pringles, or Mozilla Firefox, to name a few. Hyper candy colors, 3D realism, heavy fonts, and other characteristics you can notice that brands use to hold power in the “excessive” world.

Anti-Design

And the last trend shows that all fundamentals and rules are breakable in this industry, and you can set the trend by following no trends. Thus, anti-design is a rebellion against all rules in design, which finds its fans, followers, and propagators.

Anti-design is the repetitive use of elements in design that have warped and stretched to be expressively against the idea of design fundamentals.

Sometimes, design stops being designed in its works and becomes artistic in its form. Even though anti-design might not be functional, it will suit your PowerPoint or Google slides design for futuristic and creative agencies that cherish everything extraordinary and out-of-frame.

Trends are not critical to follow, but they are always good to know to be educated on to see what clients may potentially expect. Besides, paying attention to trends gives you a look into how the creative space is developing in the world of technology. If you follow presentation design trends year by year, you can even start predicting trends for the next few years.

3D graphics

The trend for 3D graphics will continue to grow as we move further into the metaverse. The growing demand for virtual reality experiences and graphics that pull the viewer in as realistic will continue to evolve across industries. Modern 3D backdrops are also used in ways that extend beyond simply adding depth through the use of shadows and contours. They also include motion and texture, which enhances the realistic feel of the scene.

The characteristic of the 3D graphics in presentation design trends 2023:

  • 3D models are composed of vertices, which come together to form a mesh.
  • Each point on the model can be manipulated to change the shape.
  • This software uses coordinate data to identify the location of each vertical and horizontal point.

According to SelfCAD , With the evolution of multiple new and individual technologies like 3D printing, AI, ML, AR/VR, cloud computing, simulation, and big data, we will see more and more integration of Industry 4.0 components.

Throughout its long history, 3D modeling has become progressively advanced. While it’s impossible to predict exactly how technology and new applications will affect its future, for 3D modeling the future has always been bright.

Whether you’re designing for a creative project, retail, healthcare, education, or travel – expect to work 3D graphics into your creative roadmap. Moreover, you can also implement these two 3D style options for more diversity.

The 3D Memphis style

Known for its bright colors, bold combinations, patterns of contrasting colors, and simple and abstract geometric shapes, the Memphis art movement has returned to the graphic design stage. This time, however, all of it is viewed through the lens of 3D digital reality.

The 3D Memphis design style of 2023 invites you to a feast of colors, stimulating your senses to create new and exciting sensations.

2023 presentation trends

The characteristic of the 3D Memphis style in presentation design trends 2023:

  • Through the prism of 3D reality, a well-known 80s style is reborn.
  • Combining bold geometric shapes with bright colors.
  • Finds the extraordinary in the ordinary by encouraging you to look for it.

It’s a brilliant design approach based on 3D geometry and an experimental play of colors that reminds you to look for the extraordinary in the mundane.

Simplified 3D style

The simplified 3D style is also one of the coolest current trends in graphic design because many designers strive for perfection in simplicity. “Perfection is achieved when there is nothing left to take away,” said Antoine de Saint-Exupery.

2023 presentation trends

Geometric shapes lay the foundation for this type of design, simplifying all elements as much as possible. A baby toy is a simple, stylized, recognizable object that combines smooth, bold shapes with simple shapes.

2023 presentation trends

We can also find another reason for the effectiveness of simplified 3D design in this way. Our perception of the world is shaped by basic three-dimensional shapes such as spheres, cubes, and cylinders in our early childhood. Because it is familiar, approachable, and fun, the simplified 3D design is instantly understood.

The characteristic of Simplified 3D design in presentation design trends 2023:

  • Reducing details to a minimum in order to achieve perfection in simplicity.
  • Shapes such as spheres, cubes, cylinders, and others are based on simple, smooth geometric shapes.
  • As it resembles simple toys from childhood, it is easily understood, familiar, and appealing.

In addition to making icons, this style is used for reducing all details to a minimum. However, when a simplified 3D design is taken to the next level, it creates an unforgettable experience that makes you feel as if you’ve landed in a toy world.

Motion design.

According to a report published by 99 Firms in 2022, 73% of marketers will produce product explainers. Here’s the news! You’ll want to use Motion graphics and Animated graphics if you’re one of the 73% (and we hope you are!) Users are more likely to pay attention to a video than to a written piece or static image, which is why Motion graphics have become more popular.

You can expect higher conversion rates, more traffic, and more engaged leads from these scroll stoppers.

The characteristic of Motion design in presentation design trends 2023:

An animation is a combination of graphics that move through space and time.

It is becoming more and more common to use Motion design in experiential design as technology continues to create innovative solutions. Here are a few examples of Motion design:

  • Animated films
  • Animated text
  • Web-based apps

The use of animation and visual effects, it was originally used in filmmaking and video production.

Why is motion graphics design important?

According to MIT research , a person can process visual information in as little as 13 milliseconds, which proves that visual information is processed more quickly by the brain. In addition, many people consume social media content while their phones are muted. As a result, it is even more important today to convey your message only through visuals.

To capture their audience’s attention, marketers all over the world use motion graphics.

How can motion design enhance the user experience?

Content marketers work hard to create an impactful strategy that includes articles, infographics, videos, and more. In spite of this, videos are still preferred over other formats more than anything else.

81% of businesses use videos as a marketing tool because it encourages engagement and enhances user experience, according to Wyz Owl .

Collage design

Mix It Up graphic design trend for 2023 features collage elements, eclectic typography, grunge textures, and messy mood boards. This trend is reminiscent of David Carson’s gridless approach to Ray Gun magazine in the 1990s.

2023 presentation trends

In 2020, 99designs predicts that collages will be more confident, expressive, and abstract than in previous years. There will be less carefully placed vintage imagery and more of an “anything goes” attitude: playful mark-making, abstract photography clippings, and tons of texture.

2023 presentation trends

As environmental and economic realities force us to be more resourceful, contemporary collage design uses materials all around us and boldly showcases our modern culture.

The characteristic of Collage design in presentation design trends 2023:

  • Start with a mood board template and build up naturalistic images.
  • Mixed-weight typography.
  • Noisy textures for instant grunge appeal.

Especially effective for social media channels, this trend gives brands a behind-the-scenes feel.

In 2023, more apps will support light and dark modes, and websites and UI designs will follow suit, focusing more on dark mode designs.

2023 presentation trends

As well as being mysterious and dramatic, the dark mode is also easier on screen-weary eyes than pale or colored backgrounds. Taking things over to the dark side will add tech-inspired moodiness to a range of designs, as well as translate nicely to print layouts.

With blackout sections, a traditionally white magazine spread can be given an inky touch. In addition, you can draw attention to a marketing message on social media with a white or neon type against a dark background.

2023 presentation trends

To give your layouts a point of difference, use dark blue, dark green, or deep violet-purple colors in dark mode.

The characteristic of dark mode design in presentation design trends 2023:

  • Avoid pure black
  • Avoid pure white fonts
  • Be careful with saturated colors on dark themes
  • Use brand colors wisely
  • Don’t lose your brand’s personality
  • Never use shadows
  • Communicate depth
  • Meet accessibility color contrast standards
  • Review your imagery database
  • Allow users to switch from regular to dark mode
  • Test your solutions with end-users

In the opinion of Olivier Berni, a writer from “UX Collective”, a dark mode is useful when you quickly scan a screen for visual or colored elements. SalesForce designers wondered what mode was most suitable for developing dashboard features in 2018. The researchers interviewed many users and found that Dark Theme charts helped users make decisions faster, and just as accurately as Light Theme charts.

The 1990s Sans Serifs

The use of curvy, fluid serifs has dominated rebranding for the past few years, adding authority and longevity to identities. Due to the saturation of serif fonts, a shift is just around the corner. For minimalist branding, sans serifs fit perfectly with the metaverse mood and are simpler and cleaner.

2023 presentation trends

The 90s minimalist resurgence made popular by online fashion and lifestyle influencers is next year’s hottest trend: sans serifs with a 1990s vibe. To nail the minimalist Nineties look, choose ultra-clean sans styles with slightly rounded forms.

That said, Samantha Barbagiovani, design director at ThoughtMatter , believes that some of the wilder type designs of the 2020s so far will start to take a back seat.

According to her, “The experimental and almost non-designed letterforms we have seen over the past two years – partly owing to Gen-Z and partly to living a surreal life facilitated through screens – will simmer down.” So, in the future, we’ll see typefaces built on solid foundations with purposeful optimizations on top, such as Muoto or CoFo Sans.

The characteristic of 1990s Sans Serif in presentation design trends 2023:

  • Contemporary
  • Approachable
  • Clean and very precise ends

So with all that in mind, you can check popular sans-serif fonts , we’d recommend checking out for 2023. These top typefaces will help you future-proof your designs and help you stay bang on-trend.

Artistic Serif

Small decorative flicks are added to the ends of each stroke of serif fonts to mimic the appearance of a quill or pen. Due to their readability and visually appealing form, they have remained popular since the mid-1800s.

2023 presentation trends

Serif fonts are commonly used in magazines, books, newspapers, and most long-form print formats. As far as web fonts in general, they’ve taken a back seat to sans serifs, but putting them together is a clever idea!

Using serif fonts evokes warm and pleasant feelings. Among other things, handwritten fonts are often associated with them. Their confidence inspires confidence at the same time.

2023 presentation trends

You don’t have to use Times New Roman in all projects, as you can find plenty of other cool options here. Our vendor program lets you upload fonts and earn passive income if you create them.

The characteristic of artistic Serif in presentation design trends 2023:

  • Traditional
  • Established
  • Trustworthy
  • Small decorative flicks at the ends of each stroke

Long letters are not suitable for serif fonts because they add expressiveness to the text. When highlighting headings on a website, it’s good to use serif fonts, but for body text, it’s better to use sans serif fonts.

Let’s take a look at the most popular serif fonts for 2022 here that are still on trend in 2023! Fonts like them can make a design stand out – and that’s what we strive for, right?

Here’s a graphic design trend for 2023 that can trace its roots to fashion, reality TV, and cinema. Next year is all about one unashamedly brash and flash color. That’s right, pink is back… and it’s pinker than ever.

This isn’t the washed-out Millennial pink of years previous. This is Pepto-Bismol pink on acid—a hyper-pink that made an appearance on the Valentino runway and, before long, in the closets of the Kardashians. A natural evolution from the fascination with all things the Noughties currently happening in fashion and on social media, pink is set to be the color of the year given the much-anticipated release of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie and all things Barbiecore.

2023 presentation trends

On the other hand, Celebrity stylist, Natashaa Bothra believes, “It can be credited to Gen Z ready to take risks and to break gender stereotypes”. She elaborates, “The color has been more like a breakthrough for brands where psychologically it challenges men as well.” The hue, which is culturally one of the first colors to ever appear on planet Earth 1.1 billion years ago is now being used as a means to beat the pandemic blues.

2023 presentation trends

Designer Lakshmi Babu explains, “With dopamine dressing trending in the post-pandemic era, loud colors have become a favorite among designers and celebrities. The bright hot pink hue struck a chord because while it looks angry, it also helps one get out of the dull and gloomy times.”

Of course, pink doesn’t have to be insipid or stereotyped, and this new incarnation of ultra-pink is quite the opposite, instead loaded with a feminist statement and a loud-and-proud attitude. For graphic designers, bright pink can bring power and punch to a wide range of designs, and it embodies a punk attitude when teamed with jet black.

Using kinetic typography

The term kinetic typography sounds fancy, but it’s really just a technical way of saying ‘moving text.’ Motion typography is an animation technique that integrates motion with text, which is why it is also sometimes called kinetic typography.

When text is transformed with movement, it can achieve a wide variety of effects — it can create emphasis where it is desired, it can convey emotion and conjure up ideas, and it can create a powerful message out of the simple text. In terms of kinetic typography, only your imagination limits you.

The characteristic of kinetic typography in presentation design Trends 2023:

  • Lettering can shrink or expand, move around the page, change color, undergo distortion, or be subject to any number of creative techniques.
  • It is possible to create text animations that are simple and short, or more elaborate and complex.

Modern kinetic typography is more accessible than ever, making it easier for anyone to get started. There are more opportunities than ever to create and deploy cool typography animations due to the explosion in web design and higher broadband speeds.

In 1959, Alfred Hitchcock’s feature film North by Northwest introduced the kinetic type. The use of motion typography in film and television title design was pioneered by this pioneering kinetic type title sequence. Some of the most iconic and striking examples of animated typography compositions come from this field.

Over time, animated typography began to appear in more and more contexts beyond film and TV. In advertising, moving type has been used to capture audiences’ attention, as dynamic text is much more fascinating than static text. There are now a variety of info videos and explainer videos using kinetic typography.

An excellent example of motion typography is Apple’s video announcing that all of its products will be carbon neutral by 2030. A combination of accelerated typography animations and hand-drawn animations is used, and the use of green as well as white helps to reflect the sustainability message. This is one of the best kinetic typography videos we have ever seen.

An exciting futuristic world

Metaverses, NFT, crypto world – this is our new reality.

2023 presentation trends

NFT is also not far behind in popularity – major brands are collaborating with well-known NFT artists for exclusive collections. We can assume that this is far from the limit.

The characteristic of NFT in presentation design trends 2023:

  • The development of unusual characters and objects, space gradients.
  • The combination of a dark background with neon colors.
  • We can also assume that AI will be integrated into the work of designers.

But what exactly is NFT, what is the metaverse, and what are the advantages of virtual artworks? It would probably take a whole book to explain NFTs. Digital works should not be dismissed. For the first time, non-fungible tokens – NFTs – give digital artists a traceable way to identify their works. An unalterable record of transactions can be created using the much-discussed blockchain technology.

2023 presentation trends

Using this technology, it is possible to trace and document the rights of use and value of digital objects. By removing all ambiguities regarding ownership, digital works now enjoy the same status as analog art, which has long benefited from physical proofs. In simple terms, NFTs are like certificates of authenticity or invoices from reputable galleries.

When you dive deeper into the world of NFTs, it quickly becomes very complicated and abstract. One idea that keeps appearing in connection with NFTs is the metaverse, an idea that’s been making headlines. As avatars, we can enter the metaverse, a second online world. Inside, we can see artworks and products such as furniture, decorations, and clothing that were purchased with NFTs. Eventually, if you were to become the proud owner of the Mars House by Krista Kim, you could use this house in the metaverse and furnish it with Andrés Reisinger’s furniture from The Shipping collection.

In the words of designer Misha Kahn, NFTs allow objects to be freed from their physical context. This presents a significant advantage for the interior industry and opens up completely new possibilities for online businesses. Designers can unleash their creativity when creating a digital piece of furniture and produce extraordinary works that are utterly divorced from reality. After that, they could consider how their ideas could be implemented in reality. Creative innovations could be unleashed by this process.

The metaverse and NFT relationship

Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are one of the fastest-growing areas of the metaverse, appealing to people’s curiosity, creativity, and investment desires. In addition to art, music, in-game goods, and videos, NFTs also represent physical assets. As with most cryptocurrencies, they are often purchased and traded online using cryptocurrency.

In the days before NFTs and blockchain technology, it was virtually impossible to verify ownership of anything online, let alone a digital asset. The answer is yes. As NFTs are used to prove ownership accurately and transparently, especially in a virtual world, they will continue to play an important role.

Moreover, NFTs can be used to build several metaverses, including the “TradArt” universe. Despite the efforts of creators, intermediaries and corporations fail to adequately reward them. In virtual real estate, NFTs play an influential role. NFTs also serves as the legal agreement of ownership for the metaverse’s land and buildings. In order to purchase, trade, or build land in the metaverse, an NFT symbolizing the property must be minted.

Inclusive design.

Inclusive visual is a movement that extends beyond graphic design and impacts many areas of modern life. In essence, it entails showing mankind and its diversity in many contexts, including people of all backgrounds, cultures, and abilities. It may address accessibility, age, economic situation, geographic location, language, race, and more.

presentation design trends 2023

By fostering a sense of belonging, inclusive digital interfaces can positively impact user experiences.

An inclusive design methodology creates products that understand and enable people of all backgrounds and abilities. As part of inclusive design, accessibility, age, culture, economic situation, education, gender, location, language, and race may all be addressed. We strive to meet as many users’ needs as possible, not just as many users as possible.

Inclusive design is about empathizing with users and tailoring interfaces to meet their needs. As a result of inclusive design, universal design patterns are generated. An inclusive design pattern can be illustrated with the following example.

The characteristic of Inclusive design in presentation design Trends 2023:

  • Text legibility and dark mode for older user
  • Surname inputs for global audiences
  • A variety of demographic identifiers
  • Inclusive facets
  • Diverse Illustrations

All people should be able to access and use an experience that is universally designed. Unlike inclusive design, universal design enforces a single design solution without the need for adaptations or specializations. When multiple design variations achieve the desired outcome, inclusive design accepts and embraces them.

Since producing multiple functional variations of a physical object or space is costly, universal design is more commonly used in tangible and environmental contexts. Compared to conventional design, inclusive design is applied more often to digital products due to their low cost and ease of adaptation.

The clay look

One powerful message behind this trending graphic style is finding perfection in imperfection. A digital technique or real plasticine can be used to achieve the Plasticine Clay design effect.

presentation design trends 2023

This is a reminder that beauty is hidden in imperfections.

However, there was more to it. The Plasticine Clay design undergoes a continuous metamorphosis. There is no drying time. There is no limit to what it can do. Modeling and reusing can be done in an infinite number of ways, many times. This revolutionary graphic design trend for 2023 motivates you to seek constant change, explore, and experiment. This is to tell you that you have the power to change the world.

The characteristic of the Plasticine Clay style in presentation design trends 2023:

  • Introduces imperfect bumpy surfaces made by a digital technique or real plasticine.
  • Reminds you to search for perfection in the imperfect.
  • Encourages an ever-going metamorphosis, a drive to shape your own future.

This collection of Plasticine Clay graphic design examples illustrates the imperfection introduced by this style and the constant metamorphosis that one undergoes as a result.

Psychedelic design

That’s right, you read it correctly. In response to the growing demand for visually stimulating content, this design style offers a surreal experience.

presentation design trends 2023

The Trippy Design is not defined by any particular rules besides distorting reality as much as your imagination allows. Designers usually present a mishmash of styles that may or may not follow logic.

presentation design trends 2023

There are no restrictions on the sequence or combination of styles, either. Hallucinations are the desired effect. It can make you dizzy, and its aesthetic is challenging to discern. However, Trippy’s design is definitely rebellious, which is why it managed to become one of 2023’s most popular trends!

The characteristic of the Trippy design trend in 2023

  • A mishmash of styles that may not follow the logic in terms of design aesthetics.
  • Creates a surrealistic experience that resembles the effect of having hallucinations.
  • Challenges the designer to push their imagination beyond all established design rules and restrictions.

Trippy carries a rebellious spirit in its design. Here are some awesome examples of Trippy design in action.

Neon & abstract cartoon stickers

Stickers have been popular for decades, as they offer a low-cost, accessible way to personalize your belongings and express your individuality.

presentation design trends 2023

There are two styles that are super trendy and hot in the current graphic design trends of 2023: neon and abstract cartoon sticker styles.

There are many digital stickers that are designed to resemble physical stickers. These stickers have a borderline indicating the cut or a strict shape like a circle or a rounded rectangle. A modern design approach also distorts the shape and even adds volume and motion to re-interpret a well-known object.

Conversely, some designs offer a near-realistic perception that makes you wonder whether you’re looking at a picture or a digital image.

The characteristic of Digital Stickers trend in presentation design trends 2023

  • Neon and abstract cartoon sticker styles pop among others.
  • While some resemble flat physical stickers, others are presented with motion and volume.
  • Abstract cartoon sticker style conveys the sense of art drawings.

The vast majority of modern digital sticker collections fall into the abstract cartoon category, all conveying the sense of abstract art drawings, even stickers that include words.

70s retro flat styles

Flat designs inspired by the 70s art movement are making a huge comeback. The bright, saturated colors of these design compositions stand out no matter how simple or complex they are. Despite being bold and quite flashy, the color combinations of the 70s retro flat design style are aesthetically pleasing.

presentation design trends 2023

A significant trademark of this style is the thin black outlining, aiming to put a border to each element distinguishing it from the rest.

presentation design trends 2023

In fact, typography here is often a main element of the design composition. A popular practice is to add a 3D-effect thick border line to make the letters pop.

The characteristic of 70s Retro Flat design in presentation design trends 2023 :

  • Bold, flashy, saturated colors that look aesthetically pleasing together.
  • All design elements are outlined by thin black borders.
  • Bulky, rounded letter types with a 3D effect or simple black outlining.

The 70s retro-style flat illustrations with outlining also paved their way up the charts, modernized with futuristic, less saturated color palettes. Multi-color gradients are also introduced on the stage but black thin outlining still remains a must-have feature of this style.

The style was popularized by the famous interface design app Figma. Although super simple, this 70s retro design style looks pleasing and catches the attention with ease.

Anti design

Today’s anti-design resurgence is reminiscent of the 1960s, except it takes place online. The web isn’t the Wild West that it once was. It has reached an age where it is “relevant to start borrowing from the past,” as noted in “ The Rise of Brutalism and Antidesign ,” a research paper published in 2019 by students at the School of Engineering in Jönköping, Sweden.

presentation design trends 2023

A now widely circulated tweet asks, “Which of the two possible websites are you currently designing?”,” above images of two similarly generic website templates. Thousands of people have retweeted this in the six years it has been around, indicating a larger, industry-wide sentiment that the design is getting stale.

presentation design trends 2023

The reason design has gotten this way, specifically, web design has been attributed to website builders like Squarespace or WordPress. Others point to our increasingly competitive capitalistic society – businesses know what works to get sales or followers, so they don’t stray too far. Whatever the reason, Julia Tylor, who works as the creative director of the design consulting firm Throughline, said we have “exhausted the clean design.”

The characteristic of Anti design in presentation design trends 2023 :

  • Overlaid and crowded text and imagery
  • Clashing colors
  • Lack of a grid
  • Mismatched elements

In the past, every website had a white background, a big Helvetica, and a colorful button with a call to action, she said. I have spent so much time following the rules that I’ve gotten to the point where everything looks the same.”

Also contributing to this disenchantment may be the pandemic, which has disrupted seemingly every aspect of normal life. Tylor says they have challenged many assumptions because they had to. “We’ve thrown everything out the window, we don’t really know what the playbook is, so why not try something new? ”

The brutalist design eschews decoration in favor of exposing and celebrating the raw materials that were used to construct it. Architecture during the 1950s and 1970s saw its heyday, but it has recently experienced a resurgence in modern digital design.

presentation design trends 2023

By exposing the materials of construction, brutalism has nothing to hide.

Brutalism’s visual characteristics vary from designer to designer as well as from medium to medium. The following are some of the common features of brutalism:

The characteristic of Brutalism in presentation design trends 2023 :

Brutalism is about the lack of rules and challenges for society. It will help to distinguish the design from the rest. It can be assumed that it is becoming one of the 2023 graphic design trends because people are tired of the same old designs.

  • Exposure of materials—concrete for architecture, the default, unstyled HTML for websites
  • Monochromatic color schemes, often black and white or grey
  • An emphasis on bare functionality, devoid of decoration
  • Modular, repeated design elements
  • Layered, articulated, or extruded pieces
  • Rectilinear edges
  • Unedited or as-is design elements

In this trend, you can add flashy fonts, boring images, and other “freaky elements” without looking boring and familiar. It makes it possible not to hold back the most daring and unusual decisions, moving forward with progress. A designer can break away from traditional design ideas by adding bold colors and combinations.

By the way, this “tiredness and boredom” was the cause of the trend

According to Nielsen Norman Group , brutalism, and anti-design differ primarily in their raw design approach and abandonment of conventional aesthetic principles. Anti-design (as the name implies) emphasizes ugliness, using clashing colors, no discernible visual hierarchy, and distorted, hard-to-read text.

It’s more punk than brutalism, which has its roots in efficiency and functionality. Whether a design is brutalist or not is sometimes determined by intent, but the heart-stopping emotions it evokes are often the same.

The right design can make or break an important presentation, so it’s essential to be aware of the most effective and eye-catching trends. In this blog post, we’ll take a look at 5 presentation design trends for 2023 that are sure to be big this year.

5 Presentation Design Trends for 2023 for your PowerPoint presentations

Colors get bolder and brighter.

Bright and bold colors have always been the go-to choice for presentation designers. Especially when it comes to creating engaging, and memorable presentations. This year, the focus is on using retro and bold color combinations to really make a statement with presentations.

2023’s Pantone’s Color of the Year is the gorgeously vibrant Magenta. You can be sure that presentation designers will be looking for ways to incorporate it into their designs. However, we know that it’s a big risk to take when it comes to company branding. But sometimes you just have to do things differently. Using bolder hues can be a great way to add life to your custom themes.

If you’re feeling adventurous, why not try using a bolder shade in the same family as your brand color(s)? Use it to highlight key metrics and draw attention to important information. Or why not mix things up by changing the background colors on your slides to create more attention-grabbing designs?

With the right combination of colors, you can be sure to create a presentation that stands out from the crowd. Brighter and bolder is definitely one of those presentation design trends for 2023 that’s going to be around for a long time.

Serif Fonts become more sophisticated

Typography continues to play an essential role in presentation design trends. After all, brands and businesses all over the world utilize their power to create professional and memorable presentations. However, it’s important to note that typography is extremely subjective. Therefore, it’s crucial to remember that no two businesses’ or brands’ typography is the same. In addition, branded fonts can be difficult to change and should not be messed with.

One of the most popular types of fonts used in graphic and presentation design is Serif fonts. This type of font is a timeless classic, offering a refined and professional feel. As we move further into 2023, it seems that Serif fonts are going to get a makeover. We’ve noticed that they’re becoming more fun and artistic, with different letter shapes and sizes, intertwining letters, and even intentional distortion. Going forward, Serif fonts could be a great custom font option for title slides or headings, while using a more subtle Serif for body text.

Being aware of the best presentation design trends for 2023 is crucial in ensuring that your presentations always look modern, professional, and on-trend. Serif fonts remain an important part of presentation design. This is great considering they can be used in a variety of creative ways to make your presentation stand out from the crowd. With the introduction of more fun and artistic Serif fonts, you can add a unique touch to your presentations and ensure that they stand out from the competition. So, don’t be afraid to experiment with different fonts and get creative with your presentation design this year.

Bigger backgrounds for creating a bigger splash

Presentations are the face of any business. In 2023, it's going to be more important than ever to make an impact with your presentation design. Bigger backgrounds can help achieve this. Bigger background images, bigger images on title slides, and flowing shapes can draw your audience's attention and help your slides stand out from the crowd.

However, bigger isn't always better. Cluttering your slides with too much information or using loud visuals can be jarring and detract from the overall presentation. Instead, use these bigger backgrounds to draw attention to the important elements of your presentation.

For example, use a big background image behind a title slide to draw attention to the headline. Or, use a flowing shape to create a subtle frame around your content to help it stand out from the page. By using bigger backgrounds in a subtle way, you can help your presentation stand out from the competition.

2023 is going to be a big year for businesses. Especially when it comes to creating presentations that make an impact and stand out from the crowd. Bigger backgrounds are a great way to do this. They don't have to be loud or cluttered, but they can help draw attention to the important elements of your presentation and help make it look professional. This is going to be one of the best presentation design trends in 2023and with some creative input, you too can create fantastic presentations.

Modern minimalism for the win

It’s a fact that nobody likes designs that are messy and cluttered. They don’t look clean or professional and are ultimately discarded. But when someone uses minimalism in their designs, the results are completely game-changing. Minimalistic designs have a way of drawing you in and allowing you to absorb more information properly. Modern minimalism is one of the key presentation design trends for 2023 and it’s easy to see why. Not only is the layout clean, but it’s also aesthetically pleasing. Here are a few things to keep in mind when using modern minimalism in your presentations:

  • One idea per slide is the way to go. This helps to keep your message concise and clear
  • Lengthy blocks of text are a real no-no. Chances are that no one will read them anyway, so only include important and relevant information and metrics
  • Use clean and modern colors which will enhance the design. Bright colors can be distracting and take away from the overall look
  • Definitely include modern images and icons. These will help to illustrate your points and add visual interest to your presentation

Modern minimalism has become increasingly popular, and it’s no surprise why. It’s a great way to keep your audience engaged and make sure your message is heard. So, if you’re looking to create a modern and minimalistic presentation, keep these tips in mind and you’ll be sure to create something truly memorable.

The time of unique AI-powered images is upon us

Using imagery to enhance a presentation is an established practice that has been used by design professionals for years. Presentation designers have long used them in a variety of ways - such as image grids, muted images, branded filters, and image overlays - to bring interest and visual appeal to their presentations. After all, humans are naturally visual and thus absorb information more quickly when it is presented in an image format.

As we look ahead to trends in presentation design for 2023, we can expect to see a rise in the use of unique AI-powered images and even videos. Technological advances have made it easier to create and incorporate these into presentations. Many presentation designers are now choosing to use these types of visuals in their work and the trend is sure to continue in the coming months.

The use of AI-powered images and videos in presentations allows designers to incorporate information in exciting and engaging ways that attract the viewer and keep them engaged. Not only that, but it also helps to create a professional and polished look that will make a lasting impression. Presentation designers should be sure to take advantage of the latest technology in order to stay ahead of the competition and create presentations that stand out from the crowd.

3 Presentation Design Colors Forecasted to Be Hot in 2023

  • By: Amy Boone

A lot of design and presentation websites out there are claiming to know the 2023 color trends. But we are just 5 days into the new year, so we aren’t comfortable using the word “trend.” At least not yet. However, we do want to look at the color forecasts designers are making. So we’ve explored what designers across the fields of fashion, home décor, product design, and graphic design are saying to look for in 2023. These are colors and tones that are on the cusp of making a statement. And before long, we’ll be seeing them everywhere.

Here are the 3 things we see designers forecasting across the board: a return to red tones, a comeback for browns, and a new day for lavender. We’ll share some reasons experts are loving these colors as well as some tips for how to use them in presentation design.

A Return to Red Tones

Of all the forecasted trends, a return to red seems to be the biggest one. Check out the presence of red tones on the front page of Adobe’s Color Trends library.

2023 presentation trends

A Comeback for Browns

According to experts, gray has had its day. But now it’s time for browns to make a comeback. Director of Color Marketing at Sherwin-Williams, Sue Wadden , says, “Brown is an earth tone, meaning it makes us feel grounded and more connected to nature.” She says that brown tones can bring both warmth and energy to a design. Admittedly brown tones might be picked up more quickly in home and fashion design. But they can work in graphic design too. Check out the prominence of brown in the UI/UX gallery section of Behance .

2023 presentation trends

A New Day for Lavendar

Our final color forecast is lavender. One trend forecaster even picked this as the color of the year. (You might have figured out by now that there’s really no such thing as just one color of the year. Each organization picks its own. That’s why we pay attention to the patterns we see repeated across the board as we forecast.) Color experts Coloro + WGSN specifically named Digital Lavendar as a color to watch in 2023 because it promotes feelings of wellbeing. Why? Kelsey Mulvey explained the research done to come up with this particular shade. She says, “Not only did research suggest that purple has a shorter wavelength—which often promotes a sense of calmness and balance—but this specific pastel shade has been on the rise since the Spring/Summer fashion collections.”

In November, one of our own presentation experts shared the 7 best color combinations for your next presentation . The color scheme he named as best (shown below) featured lavender as the most prominent color.

Experimenting With New Colors

Color choice can make all the difference in your presentation design. Not just with how your slides look, but also in the feelings they promote for your audience. Remember, colors are communicating. Check out what Ethos3 CEO Scott Schwertly has to say about color theory basics .

Then, take time experimenting with these hot reds, browns, and lavender tones on your next presentation (though we don’t recommend using all these colors in the same slide deck). If it feels too overwhelming to start from scratch, pick one of your older slide decks and simply change the colors to reflect one of these new forecasted trends. A quick color palette change is an easy way to make your presentation media look modern and fresh.

The ascension of AI in R&D

Trends-To-Watch-The-Ascension-Of-AI-In-R&D-1920x1080-Hero

While the future of AI has always been forward-looking, the AI revolution in chemistry and drug discovery has yet to be fully realized. While there have been some high-profile set-backs , several breakthroughs should be watched closely as the field continues to evolve. Generative AI is making an impact in drug discovery , machine learning is being used more in environmental research , and large language models like ChatGPT are being tested in healthcare applications and clinical settings.

Many scientists are keeping an eye on AlphaFold, DeepMind’s protein structure prediction software that revolutionized how proteins are understood. DeepMind and Isomorphic Labs have recently announced how their latest model shows improved accuracy, can generate predictions for almost all molecules in the Protein Data Bank, and expand coverage to ligands, nucleic acids, and posttranslational modifications . Therapeutic antibody discovery driven by AI is also gaining popularity , and platforms such as the RubrYc Therapeutics antibody discovery engine will help advance research in this area.

Though many look at AI development with excitement, concerns over accurate and accessible training data , fairness and bias , lack of regulatory oversight , impact on academia, scholarly research and publishing , hallucinations in large language models , and even concerns over infodemic threats to public health are being discussed. However, continuous improvement is inevitable with AI, so expect to see many new developments and innovations throughout 2024.

‘Greener’ green chemistry

INSGENENGSOC101826-2024-Trends-To-Watch-Greener-Green-Chemistry-1920x1080-Hero

Green chemistry is a rapidly evolving field that is constantly seeking innovative ways to minimize the environmental impact of chemical processes. Here are several emerging trends that are seeing significant breakthroughs:

  • Improving green chemistry predictions/outcomes : One of the biggest challenges in green chemistry is predicting the environmental impact of new chemicals and processes. Researchers are developing new computational tools and models that can help predict these impacts with greater accuracy. This will allow chemists to design safer and more environmentally friendly chemicals.
  • Reducing plastics: More than 350 million tons of plastic waste is generated every year. Across the landscape of manufacturers, suppliers, and retailers, reducing the use of single-use plastics and microplastics is critical. New value-driven approaches by innovators like MiTerro that reuse industrial by-products and biomass waste for eco-friendly and cheaper plastic replacements will soon be industry expectations. Lowering costs and plastic footprints will be important throughout the entire supply chain.
  • Alternative battery chemistry: In the battery and energy storage space, finding alternatives to scarce " endangered elements" like lithium and cobalt will be critical. While essential components of many batteries, they are becoming scarce and expensive. New investments in lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries that do not use nickel and cobalt have expanded , with 45% of the EV market share being projected for LFP in 2029. Continued research is projected for more development in alternative materials like sodium, iron, and magnesium, which are more abundant, less expensive, and more sustainable.
  • More sustainable catalysts : Catalysts speed up a chemical reaction or decrease the energy required without getting consumed. Noble metals are excellent catalysts; however, they are expensive and their mining causes environmental damage. Even non-noble metal catalysts can also be toxic due to contamination and challenges with their disposal. Sustainable catalysts are made of earth-abundant elements that are also non-toxic in nature. In recent years, there has been a growing focus on developing sustainable catalysts that are more environmentally friendly and less reliant on precious metals. New developments with catalysts, their roles, and environmental impact will drive meaningful progress in reducing carbon footprints.
  • Recycling lithium-ion batteries: Lithium-ion recycling has seen increased investments with more than 800 patents already published in 2023. The use of solid electrolytes or liquid nonflammable electrolytes may improve the safety and durability of LIBs and reduce their material use. Finally, a method to manufacture electrodes without solvent s could reduce the use of deprecated solvents such as N-methylpyrrolidinone, which require recycling and careful handling to prevent emissions.

Rise of biomaterials

INSGENENGSOC101826-2024-Trends-To-Watch-Rise-Of-Biomaterials-1920x1080-Hero

New materials for biomedical applications could revolutionize many healthcare segments in 2024. One example is bioelectronic materials, which form interfaces between electronic devices and the human body, such as the brain-computer interface system being developed by Neuralink. This system, which uses a network of biocompatible electrodes implanted directly in the brain, was given FDA approval to begin human trials in 2023.

  • Bioelectronic materials: are often hybrids or composites, incorporating nanoscale materials, highly engineered conductive polymers, and bioresorbable substances. Recently developed devices can be implanted, used temporarily, and then safely reabsorbed by the body without the need for removal. This has been demonstrated by a fully bioresorbable, combined sensor-wireless power receiver made from zinc and the biodegradable polymer, poly(lactic acid).
  • Natural biomaterials: that are biocompatible and naturally derived (such as chitosan, cellulose nanomaterials, and silk) are used to make advanced multifunctional biomaterials in 2023. For example, they designed an injectable hydrogel brain implant for treating Parkinson’s disease, which is based on reversible crosslinks formed between chitosan, tannic acid, and gold nanoparticles.
  • Bioinks : are used for 3D printing of organs and transplant development which could revolutionize patient care. Currently, these models are used for studying organ architecture like 3D-printed heart models for cardiac disorders and 3D-printed lung models to test the efficacy of drugs. Specialized bioinks enhance the quality, efficacy, and versatility of 3D-printed organs, structures, and outcomes. Finally, new approaches like volumetric additive manufacturing (VAM) of pristine silk- based bioinks are unlocking new frontiers of innovation for 3D printing.

To the moon and beyond

INSGENENGSOC101826-2024-Trends-To-Watch-To-The-Moon-And-Beyond-1920x1080-Hero

The global Artemis program is a NASA-led international space exploration program that aims to land the first woman and the first person of color on the Moon by 2025 as part of the long-term goal of establishing a sustainable human presence on the Moon. Additionally, the NASA mission called Europa Clipper, scheduled for a 2024 launch, will orbit around Jupiter and fly by Europa , one of Jupiter’s moons, to study the presence of water and its habitability. China’s mission, Chang’e 6 , plans to bring samples from the moon back to Earth for further studies. The Martian Moons Exploration (MMX) mission by Japan’s JAXA plans to bring back samples from Phobos, one of the Mars moons. Boeing is also expected to do a test flight of its reusable space capsule Starliner , which can take people to low-earth orbit.

The R&D impact of Artemis extends to more fields than just aerospace engineering, though:

  • Robotics: Robots will play a critical role in the Artemis program, performing many tasks, such as collecting samples, building infrastructure, and conducting scientific research. This will drive the development of new robotic technologies, including autonomous systems and dexterous manipulators.
  • Space medicine: The Artemis program will require the development of new technologies to protect astronauts from the hazards of space travel, such as radiation exposure and microgravity. This will include scientific discoveries in medical diagnostics, therapeutics, and countermeasures.
  • Earth science: The Artemis program will provide a unique opportunity to study the Moon and its environment. This will lead to new insights into the Earth's history, geology, and climate.
  • Materials science: The extreme space environment will require new materials that are lightweight, durable, and radiation resistant. This will have applications in many industries, including aerospace, construction, and energy.
  • Information technology: The Artemis program will generate a massive amount of data, which will need to be processed, analyzed, and shared in real time. This will drive the development of new IT technologies, such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.

The CRISPR pay-off

INSGENENGSOC101826-2024-Trends-To-Watch-The-CRISPR-Pay-Off-1920x1080-Hero

After years of research, setbacks, and minimal progress, the first formal evidence of CRISPR as a therapeutic platform technology in the clinic was realized. Intellia Therapeutics received FDA clearance to initiate a pivotal phase 3 trial of a new drug for the treatment of hATTR, and using the same Cas9 mRNA, got a new medicine treating a different disease, angioedema. This was achieved by only changing 20 nucleotides of the guide RNA, suggesting that CRISPR can be used as a therapeutic platform technology in the clinic.

The second great moment for CRISPR drug development technology came when Vertex and CRISPR Therapeutics announced the authorization of the first CRISPR/Cas9 gene-edited therapy, CASGEVY™, by the United Kingdom MHRA, for the treatment of sickle cell disease and transfusion-dependent beta-thalassemia. This was the first approval of a CRISPR-based therapy for human use and is a landmark moment in realizing the potential of CRISPR to improve human health.

In addition to its remarkable genome editing capability, the CRISPR-Cas system has proven to be effective in many applications, including early cancer diagnosis . CRISPR-based genome and transcriptome engineering and CRISPR-Cas12a and CRISPR-Cas13a appear to have the necessary characteristics to be robust detection tools for cancer therapy and diagnostics. CRISPR-Cas-based biosensing system gives rise to a new era for precise diagnoses of early-stage cancers.

MIT engineers have also designed a new nanoparticle DNA-encoded nanosensor for urinary biomarkers that could enable early cancer diagnoses with a simple urine test. The sensors, which can detect cancerous proteins, could also distinguish the type of tumor or how it responds to treatment.

Ending cancer

INSGENENGSOC101826-2024-Trends-To-Watch-Ending-Cancer-1920x1080-Hero

The immuno-oncology field has seen tremendous growth in the last few years. Approved products such as cytokines, vaccines, tumor-directed monoclonal antibodies, and immune checkpoint blockers continue to grow in market size. Novel therapies like TAC01-HER2 are currently undergoing clinical trials. This unique therapy uses autologous T cells, which have been genetically engineered to incorporate T cell Antigen Coupler (TAC) receptors that recognize human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) presence on tumor cells to remove them. This could be a promising therapy for metastatic, HER2-positive solid tumors.

Another promising strategy aims to use the CAR-T cells against solid tumors in conjunction with a vaccine that boosts immune response. Immune boosting helps the body create more host T cells that can target other tumor antigens that CAR-T cells cannot kill.

Another notable trend is the development of improved and effective personalized therapies. For instance, a recently developed personalized RNA neoantigen vaccine, based on uridine mRNA–lipoplex nanoparticles, was found effective against pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Major challenges in immuno-oncology are therapy resistance, lack of predictable biomarkers, and tumor heterogenicity. As a result, devising novel treatment strategies could be a future research focus.

Decarbonizing energy

INSGENENGSOC101826-2024-Trends-To-Watch-Decarbonizing-Energy-1920x1080-Hero

Multiple well-funded efforts are underway to decarbonize energy production by replacing fossil fuel-based energy sources with sources that generate no (or much less) CO2 in 2024.

One of these efforts is to incorporate large-scale energy storage devices into the existing power grid. These are an important part of enabling the use of renewable sources since they provide additional supply and demand for electricity to complement renewable sources. Several types of grid-scale storage that vary in the amount of energy they can store and how quickly they can discharge it into the grid are under development. Some are physical (flywheels, pumped hydro, and compressed air) and some are chemical (traditional batteries, flow batteries , supercapacitors, and hydrogen ), but all are the subject of active chemistry and materials development research. The U.S. government is encouraging development in this area through tax credits as part of the Inflation Reduction Act and a $7 billion program to establish regional hydrogen hubs.

Meanwhile, nuclear power will continue to be an active R&D area in 2024. In nuclear fission, multiple companies are developing small modular reactors (SMRs) for use in electricity production and chemical manufacturing, including hydrogen. The development of nuclear fusion reactors involves fundamental research in physics and materials science. One major challenge is finding a material that can be used for the wall of the reactor facing the fusion plasma; so far, candidate materials have included high-entropy alloys and even molten metals .

Neurodegenerative diseases

INSGENENGSOC101826-2024-Trends-To-Watch-Neurodegenerative-Diseases-1920x1080-Hero

Neurodegenerative diseases are a major public health concern, being a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. While there is currently no cure for any neurodegenerative disease, new scientific discoveries and understandings of these pathways may be the key to helping patient outcomes.

  • Alzheimer’s disease: Two immunotherapeutics have received FDA approval to reduce both cognitive and functional decline in individuals living with early Alzheimer's disease. Aducannumab (Aduhelm®) received accelerated approval in 2021 and is the first new treatment approved for Alzheimer’s since 2003 and the first therapy targeting the disease pathophysiology, reducing beta-amyloid plaques in the brains of early Alzheimer’s disease patients. Lecanemab (Leqembi®) received traditional approval in 2023 and is the first drug targeting Alzheimer’s disease pathophysiology to show clinical benefits, reducing the rate of disease progression and slowing cognitive and functional decline in adults with early stages of the disease.
  • Parkinson’s disease: New treatment modalities outside of pharmaceuticals and deep brain stimulation are being researched and approved by the FDA for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease symptoms. The non-invasive medical device, Exablate Neuro (approved by the FDA in 2021), uses focused ultrasound on one side of the brain to provide relief from severe symptoms such as tremors, limb rigidity, and dyskinesia. 2023 brought major news for Parkinson’s disease research with the validation of the biomarker alpha-synuclein. Researchers have developed a tool called the α-synuclein seeding amplification assay which detects the biomarker in the spinal fluid of people diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and individuals who have not shown clinical symptoms.
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS): Two pharmaceuticals have seen FDA approval in the past two years to slow disease progression in individuals with ALS. Relyvrio ® was approved in 2022 and acts by preventing or slowing more neuron cell death in patients with ALS. Tofersen (Qalsody®), an antisense oligonucleotide, was approved in 2023 under the accelerated approval pathway. Tofersen targets RNA produced from mutated superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) genes to eliminate toxic SOD1 protein production. Recently published genetic research on how mutations contribute to ALS is ongoing with researchers recently discovering how NEK1 gene mutations lead to ALS. This discovery suggests a possible rational therapeutic approach to stabilizing microtubules in ALS patients.

  • accidental poisoning (1,500 deaths or 5.8 per 100,000 people).

For more information, see The main causes of injury .

From 2017–18 to 2022–23, the age-standardised rate of injury hospitalisations fell marginally by an annual average of 0.7%. There was a noticeable fluctuation in hospitalisation cases seen between 2019–20 and 2021–22, possibly related to disruptions caused by COVID-19.

The number of injury deaths have generally been increasing over time (from 13,200 in 2017–18 to 14,700 in 2021–22), but the age-standardised death rate from injuries has remained relatively stable (ranging from 47.0 to 48.7 per 100,000 persons over the same period).

Males are more likely to present to the emergency department (ED), be hospitalised and die from injuries than females. Causes of injury differ by age – for example, the youngest and oldest people are most likely to have an injury from a fall.

ED presentations

In 2022–23:

  • males presented to ED with injuries more than females (8,000 per 100,000 people compared with 6,100 per 100,000, respectively)
  • young children aged 0–4 had the highest rates of ED presentations of any age group (10,800 per 100,000 0–4-year-olds).

Hospitalisations

  • males accounted for 55% of all injury hospitalisations
  • falls were most common among those aged 75+ (46% of reported falls)
  • most assault-related injury hospitalisations occurred among 15–49-year-olds (78%).
  • males were more likely to be injured and hospitalised across all causes except for falls (about 770 females and 730 males per 100,000) and intentional self-harm (about 130 females and 65 males per 100,000).

In 2021–22:

  • around 3 in 5 (61%) injury deaths were for males
  • males were more likely to die from any cause of injury than females
  • falls was the leading cause of death for both sexes.

Trends over time

Over the past decade:

  • rates of injury hospitalisation have remained steady or decreased slowly for most younger age groups but increased for adults aged 45+
  • injury death rates have remained steady or decreased for most younger age groups but increased for adults aged 45+.

For more information, see Differences by sex and age group and Injury causes and age .

Injuries can happen to anyone, but some population groups are more at risk than others. For example, see First Nations people and Region and socioeconomic status .

In 2022–23, fractures (about 412,000 presentations) and open wounds (about 320,000 presentations) were the most frequent ED presentations where injury type was recorded.

For hospitalisations in 2022–23, the top 3 types of injuries were fractures (about 820 per 100,000 persons or 215,000 cases), open wounds (around 345 per 100,000) and soft tissue injuries (around 202 per 100,000).

For more information, see Nature of injuries .

In 2022–23, the home was the most commonly recorded place of injury (about 162,000 cases) followed by streets or highways (51,900 cases), sports areas (29,700 cases) and aged care facilities (about 27,500 cases).

For more information, see Place of occurrence .

Severity

The severity or seriousness of an injury can be measured in several ways. Some of these are:

  • emergency department presentation metrics such as triage category
  • average length of hospital stay (ALOS) measured in days
  • time in an intensive care unit (ICU) or receipt of continuous ventilatory support (CVS)
  • in-hospital deaths.

For more information, see  Severity .
