How would you describe your work habits? Interview questions answered

Man is a creature of habits . And we do not change easily, especially after we reach certain age, and have been following our routines for years . But each new job is a chance to change something in our life. A chance to grow (or to decline), an opportunity to learn something new, and perhaps even form new work habits . And since our habits have an impact on our productivity , as well as on our relationships with colleagues at work, hiring managers like to ask about them in the interviews. It isn’t an easy question , because many people cannot even tell what their work habits are. And what about you?

As a rule of a thumb, you should focus on good habits , routines that should help you be more productive and achieve your goals in the job. A bit of honesty doesn’t harm as well though. Mentioning a bad habit (such as always arriving five minutes late to meetings, or not really listening when colleagues are talking to you), can win you the favor of many interviewers. Especially when you elaborate on it , explaining that you try your best to get rid of a bad habit , and perhaps replace it with a good one.

Let’s have a look at 7 sample answers to this intriguing question. I tried to include in my selection answers for both experienced employees and fresh graduates (people applying for their very first job), some unconventional answers, and all in all you should be able to come up with your own fitting answer after going through the list. 7 sample answers to “How would you describe your work habits?” interview question

  • I have a few habits all my former colleagues know and can confirm. One of them is always replying to emails immediately , as soon as I open them. I find it much more effective than waiting and prioritizing messages and then ending up with a big pile of unanswered emails . Because in my last job communication was very important. And so as soon as I got an email I opened it, and either deleted it or answered it immediately. My second habit is taking initiative in the meetings . I am the one to raise unpleasant questions , and also the one to answer such questions from other managers. Certainly I have also other work habits, but these two stand out in my view, and I hope they will help me to achieve great results in my new job.
  • To be honest, I am just forming my work habits , because I’ve been employed for two years only. One thing that stand out, however, at least in my view, is an excellent focus on the task at hand . I never listen to music or work on several tasks simultaneously, or daydream while in the job. On the contrary, I give 100% of my attention to the task I am working on at the moment. In my experience, it helps me to complete the work faster than my colleagues, and it is perhaps a good habit. But as I’ve said, I am still young and forming my other habits. Perhaps I can learn some great work habits from the managers in your company.
  • I would call out two things. One–and that’s definitely a habit I want to change , is being five minutes late to every meeting. I just must improve my time management , because while five minutes isn’t a long time, and perhaps my colleagues accept that, the really successful people are punctual , and also those minutes add up in a long run, and we are losing time. Second habit–and that’s perhaps a good one, is being honestly interested in the needs and feelings of my colleagues . I find it natural to talk to people, to perceive how they feel, to ask questions, to offer words of encouragement , and so on. In my experience, it helps a lot with relationship building in the workplace.
  • My most obvious work habit is an obsession with planning . I like to have an in-detail plan for every day in work , including even minor tasks. Sometimes at the start of the day I know what I will do every minute at work. And while this helps me to stay productive and waste minimum of time , it can sometimes backfire, especially when things change suddenly. Because I have a tendency to stick to the plan and then I sometimes lack flexibility , and ability to adapt quickly to changes. As you can see, I am still trying to find the right balance here , and perhaps a job with you can be a great opportunity to do so.
  • This is my first job application , and so I haven’t had a chance to develop any work habits yet . Of course, I have some experience from college, for example when I was preparing for exams. We can also call that period “work”, in a sense it is a job of a student to prepare for the exams… In the exam period, my habit was to always start early , and do the majority of studying in the morning , when my mind was fresh and I found it easier to concentrate and learn something. And I think I’d like to do the same at work, because my mind really works the best in the morning. Other than that I cannot specify any work habits, but hope to form good habits in my new job , because I want to be successful, and that would be tough without fostering the right habits.
  • My main work habit is to always keep learning . Working in IT, I am aware of the scary pace the technology evolves at. Unless I adapt, I will become a second-class programmer , and I cannot afford it. That’s why I keep learning the code, watching tutorials, experimenting in my free time, and basically do all I can to stay on the top of the things. I have one bad habit as well though. It happens to me sometimes that I get extremely absorbed in my work . Colleagues talk to me and I am not listening , or a manager tells me to do something and I immediately forget . Well, there is always room for improvement I guess. I am aware of this bad habit, and hopefully I can get rid of it in my new job.
  • Speaking honestly, I try to keep things simple when it comes to work habits. I always arrive on time , take care of my duties, stay courteous to the customers , regardless of how I feel, or how they treat me. Sticking to these simple rules helps me to deliver the expected results month after month. I definitely want to do the same in my new job, hopefully with your corporation.

Speak in a “normal language”, elaborate on your habits

You may have a tendency to use many “power words” in your interview answers, just because a lot of interview coaches and self-proclaimed gurus suggest you to do so. In my opinion, this is an outdated advice , and most hiring managers are tired of such answers. What’s more, they sound completely unnatural…

I suggest you to speak in a normal language, describing your habits and how they impact you in your daily work (just like you can learn on my list of sample answers), because at the end of the day, that’s what matters for the interviewers. You can also elaborate on each habit. If it is a bad one, ensure them that you try your best to get rid of it, or to replace it with a good habit . And if it is a good habit, one which helps you to achieve better results at work, tell them that you want to keep it in your new job as well.

Good work habits are essential for anyone who wants to succeed in his or her job, whether it is an after school or summer job or one that is a step on the career ladder. They increase your productivity and job satisfaction and help you have better relationships with your boss and coworkers. We asked experienced professionals and parents what good work habits they would tell young adults they must have. Here is their advice:

1. ​Take Criticism Well ​

Your boss's feedback is valuable. He isn't necessarily criticizing your performance because he dislikes you. He may be trying to help you succeed.

2. ​Don't Gossip

Don't contribute to the gossip mill and remain neutral if your coworker tries to pull you into it or talks behind another colleague's back.

3. Be a Problem Solver, Not a Complainer

If you have a complaint about something, always have ideas about how to make it better. When you turn negativity into positive action, you will sound professional instead of whiny.

4. Be Dependable

Always go to work when you are scheduled to be there. Only call out if you are truly sick.

5. Be Willing to Go Into Work If Your Boss Asks

If your boss asks you to come into work when you are not scheduled, be willing to make every effort to go. You should also be cheerful about it (or pretend to be).

6. Allow Extra Time for Everything

Always build a buffer into commuting time, as well as your timeline for working on a project.

7. Be Prepared to Not Know Everything

You certainly won't know everything when you first start out, and you will still have more to learn even as you move up in your career.

8. Put Your Phone Away While at Work

Texts and notifications that pop up on your cell phone can be a big distraction while you are working. Check your phone only during breaks.

9. Dress for a Better Job

Dressing for the position you want lets your employer visualize you in that job.

10. ​Ask for Help and Offer It as Well

No one, no matter how talented, can do it all alone. If you need assistance, don't be afraid to ask for it. Realize others may require it too but may hesitate to ask, so offer a hand when you can. 

11. ​Always Do Your Best

When your boss assigns a task, perform it to the best of your ability.

12. ​Be Kind

There is nothing to be gained by not being nice to others. When you are kind, it will make others happy, and they will have goodwill toward you. Be especially kind to those who seem the most miserable. They may really need it and it could have a positive effect on them.

13. ​Do More Than Is Required and Do It With a Smile and a Positive Attitude

While doing more than your boss or customers expect may get you recognition, more importantly, it will give you experience and personal satisfaction.

14. Never Say "It's Not My Job"

  Be ready to pitch in when you are needed. It may involve doing something that isn't in your job description, but you will demonstrate that you are flexible.

15. Look at Problems as Opportunities, Not Challenges

When problems arise, solving them gives you the chance to showcase your strengths and sharpen your skills.

16. Keep Personal Problems Out of the Workplace

Beware of extensively talking about your personal problems. What you tell your coworkers could influence their perception—and your boss's—about your ability to do your job and it could make you the subject of workplace gossip.

17. Ask Questions

If you don't understand how to do something, or how something works, get clarification. You may feel foolish asking what you consider a silly question, but that is much better than making an avoidable mistake.

18. Always Proofread Your Work

It may take a little longer to look over your work, but it is much better to catch your errors before someone else does.

19. Don't Forget That Work Is Work

While it is important to like what you do, you will be terribly disappointed if you expect your job to be fun and games all the time. There are things you will need to do that won't be glamorous, but as they say, "that's why they're paying you the big bucks."

20. Make Sure You Understand Company Policies

If you don't know what they are, get the facts from someone whose job it is to know them, for example, the human resources department. If you ask a coworker instead, he or she may give you the wrong answer, and you will bear the consequences.

21. Don't Be Afraid to Say "I Don't Know"

If someone asks you a question and you truly don't know the answer, rather than giving out misinformation, be honest. Say you aren't sure, but you will find out. Then do it.

22. Be ​Organized

It is impossible to do good work if you are disorganized. 

23. Prepare for Your Day

Arrive at work early and get ready for the day by anticipating what you will have to do while you are there. Do not get flustered by last minute changes. You may have to modify your plans.

24. Never Ask a Subordinate or Colleague to Do Something You Would Not Do

Delegate tasks if you have the authority to do so but don't expect anyone to do your dirty work for you.

25. Smile, and When Things Are at Their Worst, Smile More

Smiling makes you feel better and it makes others feel better. Of course, don't smile when it is inappropriate to do so, for example when something tragic happens.

26. Listen to Understand, Not React

When someone is talking, listen carefully. Don't think about how you are going to respond, but instead, try to absorb what the person is telling you. You can ask questions later.

27. ​Stop ​Procrastinating

What are you really prepared to require? What strong preferences are you prepared to impose? If they really matter, they are worth teaching. This is the message I recommend managers deliver when they are trying to convince their young employees to care about developing good work habits…

Here’s why you should care about learning best practices and building better work habits: These basic work habits might seem like matters of personal style or preference, but there are strong business reasons for these requirements. How you present yourself and conduct yourself at work has a big impact on your performance and on all of those with whom you interact. Perhaps more to the point, it has a huge impact on your reputation at work.

Not following good work habits with consistency makes you seem younger and less mature. It gives some managers second thoughts about trusting you with important work. If you want to be taken seriously in the workplace, your best bet is to learn best practices and develop good work habits. People will perceive you as being more professional. That will be very much to your benefit, both here and anywhere else you work.

Here is the big challenge: Habits are habits for a reason. Habits feel good. Habits feel right. Even if you can see the logic for a different set of behaviors that will have better results, it is very hard to break one habit and create a new one. Research shows that it takes several weeks of consistent practice of a new set of behaviors to form a new habit . It takes even longer for a new healthy habit to become entrenched. But remember, human beings are not just creatures of habit. We are products of our habits. Will you be the product of good habits or bad habits? That is your choice.

So what exactly are important or good work habits? Who’s to say something is good but something else is bad? Here are eight good work habits I recommend focusing on:

1. Wellness: Maintaining a healthy body, mind, and spirit/mood.

2. Self-presentation: Controlling one’s grooming, attire, and manners—given the social and cultural situation at hand—so as to make a positive impression on others.

3. Timeliness: Arriving early, staying late, and taking short breaks. Meeting or beating schedules and deadlines.

4. Productivity: Working at a fast pace without significant interruptions.

5. Organization: Using proven systems for documentation and tracking—note taking, project plans, checklists, and filing.

6. Attention to detail: Following instructions, standard operating procedures, specifications, and staying focused and mindful in performing tasks and responsibilities.

7. Follow-through and consistency: Fulfilling your commitments and finishing what you start.

8. Initiative: Being a self-starter. Taking productive action without explicit direction. Going above and beyond; the extra mile.

When you take the time to help any employee build themselves up with old-fashioned good work habits, they get better and better. Just think of the impact you could have on employees by helping them get better when it comes to any of these habits: wellness, self-presentation, timeliness, organization, productivity, quality, follow-through, consistency, and initiative.

Bottom line: Make them aware. Make them care. They’ll perform, increase their job satisfaction, and you’ll be glad.

Managers and coworkers enjoy working with people who report to work every day, interact in positive ways, take pride in their work and complete their assignments on time. With a bit of extra effort, you can prove your value to your colleagues and your boss. They can't help but respect your hard work and efficiency.

Remember that Productivity Matters

In a world flooded with technological tools that make life easier, there is a huge focus on productivity in the workplace. People postpone work for a variety of reasons, but too much procrastination can sabotage their career. They might be afraid to succeed at work or presume that a task will be too difficult. To show a good work ethic, you can benefit from tackling tasks head-on and getting help when they seem too difficult.

Managers are good sources of coaching and feedback for difficult tasks. You should also set tangible goals that demonstrate your productivity. The Society for Human Resource Management emphasizes the importance of establishing goals that may be just outside of your reach. These goals demonstrate your interest in being a go-getter.

Focus on Performance

Good work habits are essential for getting a positive performance evaluation and continuing employment in an organization. A boss writes an employee's evaluation and recommends a pay increase for effective performance, but he usually doesn't give a raise for weak performance. He mentions what areas need improvement, but he may not take as much time to acknowledge many things that an employee does well. One way to get a better evaluation is to become so efficient at your job that you're free to assist others with their tasks, which represents extra productivity and makes you an important asset to a team.

Strong Performance Means Strong References

It's important to have a record of good work habits when an employee is searching for a job or seeking a promotion. She wants her current supervisor and her personal references to explain to a prospective boss how hard she works, how well she knows her job and how reliable she is for meeting her work goals. References can be the difference maker in securing your job of choice, according to the Harvard Business Review . Sometimes, employees think they have good work habits, but when they seek honest feedback from their manager, they learn there are improvements to make. If you take time to develop work habits that make you more efficient without sacrificing your work quality, you can use those habits in future jobs.

So in this article, I’ll share the best ways to describe your work style in a job interview , with example answers, so you can impress the interviewer and win the job.

Why Hiring Managers Ask Interview Question About Work Style

The hiring manager is looking for a few key things when they ask you to describe your work style. First, they’re looking to see how you’ll fit into the existing team and company culture . The hiring manager is your potential future boss, so they want to know if they’ll get along well with you, too.

Next, they’re eager to see your work ethic and attitude in general. Do you seem like you’re able to take feedback, listen to instructions, and stay calm under pressure? Those are examples of traits employers want to see when they ask about your work style.

In the next section, I’ll share the best way to answer the interview question, plus a long list of impressive words you can use.

How to Describe Your Work Style: Delivering an Effective Answer

The best way to describe your work style is to pick two to three qualities to mention and then explain, with an example or further explanation, why you chose those words. Keep your answer to this question under one minute and also consider the type of jobs you’re interviewing for so that you can highlight your most relevant qualities.

The most important step is to choose skills that fit what the job requires. Because the interviewer is thinking, “Does this person have the skills needed to succeed in the job I’m hiring for?”

That’s always their focus in the job interview. So if the position is going to require you to work alone, demonstrate you can do that. If you’ll need to work in a fast-paced environment and interact frequently with others, talk about your ability to do that. And if possible, highlight specific accomplishments or results you’ve achieved in your past work, along with sharing a general description of your style of work. You’ll see this soon in the example answers coming up later in this article. You can point to specific areas of experience on your resume when answering this question, too. Consider talking about a related project or great result you got for a previous employer that’s on your resume.

Next, let’s look at some good words you can incorporate into your answer to sound impressive and show hiring managers that you possess the traits they want to see.

There are far more words you can use to describe your work style in the job interview, but these all sound professional and impressive and should give you a great starting point as you plan and practice your answer.

I recommend mentioning two of these words, not just one, in your answer. However, it’s okay to choose a single word if you’re able to back it up with examples and strong evidence of how you’ve used that trait to deliver great results throughout your career.

Describe Your Work Style: Answer Examples

Sample answer 1 (fresh graduate/entry-level):.

I’m a strong communicator and I take pride in my honesty, too. In university, I led multiple clubs and group projects where I had the chance to build my communication skills including public speaking. And I’m always clear and upfront in my communication. I’m proud of the fact that I’m honest and transparent in my work. I saw on your job description that this position may lead some committees and meetings, so that’s one detail that attracted me to your organization and made me think I’d be able to put my communication skills to good use here.

Sample Answer 2 (Experienced Candidate):

I would describe my work style as flexible and adaptable. I’m able to work independently but also can work in a more team-oriented structure. For example, I’ve collaborated with up to 15 people on certain projects in my current job, for example. I can also react to unexpected challenges and changes and stay focused and effective. In my last role, we faced a number of unexpected issues with client projects and even though it can be stressful, I enjoy working through those unexpected challenges. They don’t throw me off or cause me to panic.

Sample Answer 3 (Manager/Executive):

As a manager, my work and leadership style is transparent and consistent. I try to treat each team member fairly and equally. That’s helped me earn the trust of past teams and grow my sales team in my last position into the best-performing group among 12 sales teams in the company. When somebody works for me, they know what to expect, and they know I’ll treat them fairly and honestly. I’ve found that people not only prefer to work in this type of situation but also perform their best when treated this way.

Tailor Your Interview Answer to the Job You’re Discussing

When you answer an open-ended interview question such as, “Can you describe your work style?” it’s best to hone in on the skills needed in this prospective employer’s work environment. If a job involves only individual work, it doesn’t help you much to say you’re a team player, for example. The best qualities to mention are always those that will help you perform this job. How do you accurately predict what the company values most, though? To give a great answer and know what the company wants to hear, review the job description carefully. Think about how your personal work style aligns with the job duties and skills this employer wants, and in your answer, talk about the areas of overlap/similarity.

That’s a good approach to answer interview questions in general. Also, consider anything you’ve learned about the role in prior interviews with the company. Then, adjust your answer to show you’re well-suited for this exact job. Don’t just copy one of the sample answers above without considering the job.

General Topics to Mention When You Describe Your Work Style

You can mention one or more of the following general ideas/topics as you talk about your work style in the interview:

  • Ability to meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to handle multiple projects
  • Being detail-oriented
  • Time management skills
  • A tendency toward being a team player
  • Ability to complete tasks under pressure or with little room for mistake
  • Good communication skills and a communication style that fits what the job requires
  • Organizational skills
  • Management style, if interviewing for a leadership position
  • Being a big picture thinker, if interviewing for a job involving strategic thinking, creativity, etc.
  • Emotional intelligence
  • Work ethic and resiliency; being a hard worker
  • Ability to work solo or without close supervision, if that’s what the job requires
  • Ability to work efficiently and accomplish tasks with as little time/resources as possible

All of the above can make for a good answer (or part of a good answer) to “Describe your work style.” The best answers will address what this prospective employer needs, so never forget to read the job description before the job interview begins.

Mistakes to Avoid When You Describe Your Work Style

The first big mistake you need to avoid is telling a lie. Hiring managers will often ask follow-up questions about your answer, and lies tend to lead to more lies, which can make you anxious and cost you the job. Plus, interviewers can often tell if your answer is not genuine or if you’re using words you don’t fully believe in because you won’t seem confident in the interview.

So don’t feel pressured to say that your work style is to thrive in a fast-paced environment if you prefer to work in a calmer setting. What you should do, instead, is target employers who seem to offer the type of work environment you enjoy , and then tell the truth in your job interviews. It’s okay to say that you like some things and dislike others. That’s completely fine, as long as you know what type of company you’re interviewing with so that you can give an answer that fits their style of workplace. This is true of other interview questions, too. In general, tell the truth whenever possible and do your research so that you know your audience.

One other mistake to avoid when answering questions about your work style: Don’t give too many different words or ideas in response to this interview question. It’s important to focus and pick two to three points at maximum. Two is ideal in my opinion. There’s no need to give an answer longer than that, and two to three ideas should be plenty to show them that your work style is positive, effective, and well-suited to their company. (As long as you choose the right words).

As a final mistake to avoid, don’t say, “I’m not sure,” when asked to describe your work style. When the interviewer asks this, they’re trying to determine if you’re a fit for the company, and you’ll leave them with concerns and questions if you’re unable to give a clear, specific answer.

Keep this advice in mind and you’ll be ready to show interviewers that your work style fits their needs, so you can win the job offer more often.

The authors seek “to explore the work habits of college students in a naturalistic education setting” (Conard, Barbour, & Marsh, 2017, p. 1). Also, the article considers additional indicators, namely the reasons for interruptions, distractions, as well as data on the effectiveness of working results. Essay # Nature of Habit:

A habit is the product of repeated voluntary actions. When a voluntary action is repeated very often, it is turned into a habit. Voluntary actions involve an effort of will or volition. But when they become habitual, they dispense with the guidance of attention and volition, and become automatic. Habitual actions are acquired.

They are sometimes called secondarily automatic actions, because they are uniform and mechanical, and are performed with ease and facility. Running, reading, writing, type-writing, swimming, etc., are habitual actions. They are the results of repeated voluntary actions. They are learned actions as distinguished from unlearned actions. Instinctive acts also may by repeated and fixed as habits.

Essay # Characteristics of Habit:

(a) Habitual actions are uniform actions. Voluntary actions vary in their nature in order to adjust the organism to new situations. But habitual actions performed in the same way. A person talks or writes in the same way.

(b) Habitual actions are performed prom­ptly. The stronger is the habit, the quicker is the motor response to the situation. The soldiers who parade every day perform the required movements quickly as soon as they hear the commands of an officer.

(c) Habitual actions are performed not only prom­ptly, but also accurately. The stronger is the habit the more precise is the motor response. The soldiers perform the precise movements in a parade in execution of the officer’s commands.

(d) Habitual actions are performed automatically without the guidance of attention and consciousness. If they are attended to, they are hindered. When we attend to buttoning our coats or tying the laces of our shoes, the normally habitual actions are thwarted and lose their automatic nature. But habitual actions are started by attention, and carried on automatically without attention.

(v) Habitual actions are performed with ease and facility. As habits are firmly established, they diminish fatigue. The miners do not feel fatigue when they are accustomed to their work. The chief difference between the skilled and the unskilled workman is that the former trains his brain and the letters trains his muscles.

(f) The stronger is the habit, the greater is the difficulty of breaking it. An inveterate drunkard finds it extremely difficult to break the habit of drinking. Habits leave mental dispositions and physiological dispositions which compel the individual to perform them.

A habitual opium-eater feels an irresistible impulse to take doses of opium regularly. Habits resists modification. They are characterised by resistance to modification.

Essay # Relationship between Habit and Actions:

(a) Habit and Instinct:

Habits and instincts are alike marked by uniformity and facility. They are both mechanical and accurate. They both give rise to periodic cravings, as in smoking, drinking, etc. They both dispense with the guidance of volition. They are non-voluntary in their nature.

But there is an important difference between them. Instincts are innate, while habits are learned by repeated voluntary actions. Sometimes instincts are said to be racial habits while habits are said to be individual habits.

(b) Habit and Reflex Action:

A habit and a reflex action are alike prompt and uniform in character. Both are automatic and mechanical. Both are without the guidance of consciousness, attention, and volition. But the reflex action is native, while the habitual action is acquired.

The former is simple, while the latter is complex. For example, swimming is a very complex action, while sneezing is a simple action. Swimming is a habitual action, while sneezing is a sensation-reflex.

(c) Habit and Voluntary Action:

A habit is the product of repeated voluntary actions. It is mechanical and uniform in nature. But a voluntary action is the new response to a novel situation. The new response is exploratory and tentative, while habit is fixed and definite. The new response is slow and uncertain, while habit is fairly quick and accurate. The new response is variable, while habit is regular.

The new response is attended by effort and strained attention, while habit is easy and often, only half-conscious. The new response is apt to be un­satisfying to the one who makes it, whole habit is comfortable and a source of satisfaction. To break a habit is most uncomfortable. To do it we must form a counter-habit, or opposite habit.

(d) Habit, Character and Conduct:

Habits are results of repeated voluntary actions. They are the foundation of character. Good habits build good character. Bad (habits build bad character. Character is the permanent bent of the mind, constituted by settled habits of will. It is a system of permanent tendencies or dispositions to thought, emotions and actions voluntarily acquired.

Character is the result of habits of thought, emotion and will. Ethical writers lay stress on habits of the will in the formation of character.

But habits of thought and emotional habits are equally important factors in the formation of character McDougall emphasize the importance of sentiments, especially the sentiment or self-regard, as the foundation of character. The sentiment of self-regard is the highest sentiment under which all other sentiments are organized.

Character is different from nature. Nature is innate, but charac­ter is acquired. Character is acquired by an individual who has voluntary actions. It is built up by a person out of his natural impulses by controlling and regulating them by reason.

Natural impulses are converted into desires by self-consciousness. The desires are turned by the self into volitions. These volitions are converted into habits by repetition. Habits produce a permanent disposition which we call character. Natural impulses are the given elements which supply the self with raw materials for the formation of character.

Character, on the other hand, is the acquired habit of controlling and regulating these impulsive tendencies by will or volition in conformity with consciously conceived ends. Character is the habitual mode in which the will regulates natural impulses and desires.

It is the result of volitions, which, are, in their turn, regulated by it. The self-acquired character is the result of volitions. Volitions are determined by the character of the self.

Character is expressed in conduct. Conduct is the outer expression of character. It includes voluntary and habitual actions. They are overt or outward actions. They are determined by charac­ter of the self. Character is not absolutely fixed and permanent.

It grows and develops. Free acts of will alter the character already formed. These volitions are partly determined by past character. But they are free volitions of the self, though they are influenced by past character. Thus, neither character nor conduct is fixed and unalterable. They are plastic and modifiable. They are modified by each other.

Essay # Laws of Habit- Formation of Habit:

William James gives four laws of formation of habits.

They are the following:

(a) Begin a new habit with a firm resolution. If you make a start with a firm determination, it often carries you along and fixes the habit. If you want to rise early in the morning, first make a firm resolve to do it.

(b) Seize the first opportunity to put the new resolve into practice. When you have made a firm resolve to rise early, begin it the very next day. Do not wait for the first day of the next months or the New Year’s Day to start to work. If you do so, your resolution will become weak and inspiration will vanish.

(c) Never allow an exception to occur till the new habit is well-learned. Once you have started rising early, continue the action from day to day and never allow an exception on any pretext. If you break it once, the pathway that is formed in the nervous system will become faint, your resolve will become weak, and you may revert to your old habit. But do not permit an exception to occur, and the new habit will be formed.

(d) Keep yourself young by a little free practice every day. In order to cultivate the strength of mind, you should perform a difficult action every day which requires a great effort of will. Habits make us conservative. We move in fixed grooves of thought and action.

But we must be open to new ideas, to new methods. We can best do this according to James, by a little practice of doing some­thing new and difficult every day.

Essay # Functions of Habits:

Many bodily habits e.g., habits of personal cleanliness are fixed during childhood. Habits of dressing, behaving with others, moral and religious habits, are fixed during adolescence. Pro­fessional habits are naturally acquired later. The people belonging to different professions have their characteristic gestures, attitudes, and habits of thought and action. These habits help mental develop­ment.

Habits play an important role in mental development. They set the mind free to acquire knowledge of new things and perform new actions in new situations. The mind can pass from victory to victory on account of habits which are handed over to the body. Without habits we can never make any progress.

But habits are also a drag to mental progress. They keep the mind within the fixed grooves of thought and action. They make the mind conservative. So the mind should be on the alert to respond to new ideas and new ways, of life in novel situations.

The mind should be alive to broader and truer ideas of life and cultivate wider and wider interests. It should not be a slave of habits. When Harvey discovered circulation of blood in the body, men above forty shook their heads, but younger men readily accepted the truth of his new discovery.

Essay # Rules of Breaking Bad Habits:

Habits may be either good or bad. Good habits should be cultivated. Bad habits should be broken.

We should observe the following rules to break bad habits:

(a) Stop the bad habit at once; do not wait for a suitable opportunity. Do not gradually break a bad habit, if the result be not physically injurious. Stop the habit of smoking or drinking or rising late at once.

(b) Cultivate a positive counter-habit. Do not try merely to stop the bad habit. Try, if possible, to from a good habit in place of it. If you are in the habit of going to the cinema every evening, try to form the habit of listening to radio music at that time.

A drunkard may cultivate the habit of taking hot milk instead of wine at stated times. He should continue the habit until he feels sure that the grip of the old habit is loosened.

(c) Live in an environment, which is favourable to the forma­tion of a good habit and the breaking of a bad habit, and which offers the least possible temptation. Try to have a congenial environ­ment. Give up the company of the habitual cinema-goers if you want to break the habit of cinema-going. A drunkard must give up the company of drunkards and keep the company of sober people.

(d) Make your body an ally instead of your enemy. The nervous system is the physiological basis of habits. Nervous path-ways are formed in the nervous system by habitual actions.
