UGA Dissertations & Theses Database  is a collection of the theses and dissertations submitted electronically to the Graduate School at the University of Georgia since the summer of 1999. All dissertations are included, although some may not be viewable from off campus. The record for an individual document is always viewable, and will indicate the availability of the document. The author of a dissertation or thesis, in conjunction with his or her major professor, makes the determination if the work will be publicly available.

UGA Dissertations & Theses Database can be searched by keywords, author, title, department, major, major professor, committee members, etc. For additional information, click the "Instructions" button on any search screen. Since an individual's name may appear in the database in various ways (especially for faculty members on the advisory committees), use the Browse Search to find all variations.

NOTE:  The complete text of the dissertations and theses is not searchable in this database. However, for those that are publicly available, use the Adobe "Find" feature (binoculars icon) to search the text of an individual thesis or dissertation. For more information about UGA Dissertations & Theses Database, see here .

Thesis and Dissertation Formatting

Use standard fonts such as Arial, Courier, Helvetica, and Times. The use of unusual fonts may cause problems for the readers and when the document is printed. Use the front-matter template available from the Graduate School to do your front pages (abstract, title, copyright, approval, dedication, acknowledgements, table of contents). Do not combine this file with the body of your text.

Style requirements for ETDs

ETDs are expected to conform to the same stylistic requirements as paper theses or dissertations. The Graduate School thesis and dissertation style requirements are outlined in the  Graduate School Style Manual . Any work that is submitted that does not conform to the rules outlined in the Style Manual will be unacceptable and the student will not get credit for completion of a successful first format check until a corrected and/or more complete document is submitted.

Setting the margins

A minimum left margin of 1″ is required throughout the entire document. However, if you intend to have your work printed and bound a 1.5″ left margin is recommended. Use the following document margin guidelines (or every separate sub-document if your document is divided into several files).

  • left, right, top, bottom: 1″ (or 1.5″ left)
  • header: 0.5″
  • footer: 0.5″
  • left and right margins: 1″
  • header: 0.350″ deep
  • page number code
  • right-justification
  • bottom: 0.5″
  • bottom center

Note:  All the margins for your entire document should be one inch. To set the top heading at 1.75″ for section and chapter first pages, (with your line spacing set to double) hit the Enter key twice. This should give you the correct 1.75″ spacing.

Skipping Page Numbers

To fix page numbers that skip in Microsoft Word, click somewhere in the page after the skipped number. Then go to the Page Layout ribbon, click on pop out button for “Page Setup.”

Pop out button for page setup screenshot

In the dialog box that appears, there will be a row of tabs across the top. Click on the one called “Layout”. Look near the top of the dialog box for a control labeled “Section start.” It will most likely list either “Odd page” or “Even page” (see below). If so, this is the source of your skipping page number. Changing the setting to “New page” should fix the problem. If the control does not say “Odd page” or “Even page,”  do not  change the setting. This is not the source of your problem.

Wanda Pickens

Wanda Pickens Photo

Dr. Wanda Pickens earned her Ph.D. in Educational Leadership (Higher Education) from Mercer University in 2021. Wanda’s dissertation is entitled: Institutional Factors That Support and Impede Black Female Undergraduates at Predominantly White Institutions. The study addressed the deficient baccalaureate degree attainment of African American females, documented by a graduation rate of 45%, compared to a national average of 65% for all women. Using phenomenological methodology, Wanda’s study explored the academic, social, physical, emotional, psychological, and financial experiences of 11 Black female college alumnae who completed their bachelor’s degrees at a Predominantly White Institution (PWI). Wanda currently serves as the Senior Assistant Director of Eligibility Determination & Program Management in the Office of Student Financial Aid (OSFA) at the University of Georgia. Wanda leads her team in compliance and determination of student eligibility for state and federal financial aid programs. She is responsible for overseeing HOPE and Zell Miller Scholarship eligibility, professional judgment appeals review, and the verification process. Wanda advocates for student success and works to ensure that financial aid resources propel the students' journey to degree completion.

During the 2023-24 academic year, Wanda served on the GASFAA Executive Board as Chair of the Partner/Sponsorship Committee. She also served as GASFAA Secretary during the 2022-2023 academic year. Before starting UGA in December 2021, Wanda served four and a half years as the Director of Financial Aid at Toccoa Falls College and three years as the Assistant Director of Financial Aid at Brenau University. Wanda is originally from South Carolina and served sixteen years in Financial Aid at Southern Wesleyan University (Central, SC). She also served four and a half years as a Financial Aid Counselor/Veterans Coordinator at Tri-County Technical College (Pendleton, SC). Wanda's experience in working at various institutional types has helped her navigate and bring diverse perspectives to guide students and parents through the financial aid process. Wanda holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration (2000) and a Master's degree in Management(2008), both from Southern Wesleyan University. Wanda demonstrates strong professional leadership in higher education. She is passionate about serving students and serves to promote a premier post-secondary educational student experience.

Theses & Dissertations

Search for theses by georgia tech authors.

All theses and dissertations authored by Georgia Tech graduate students are openly shared and preserved via the GT Digital Repository . Theses and dissertations published 2004 to the present are openly accessible. Those published prior to 2004 are available to the Georgia Tech community only, unless permission to make them openly available has been given by the author (to grant permission to make your work openly viewable,  contact the repository team ).

For those not affiliated with Georgia Tech, please contact us at [email protected] for information on obtaining a copy of a GT thesis or dissertation that is not openly available in the repository.

Unless otherwise noted, Georgia Tech theses and dissertations are under copyright of the author.

Visit the GT Digital Repository

Search proquest.

Georgia Tech dissertations can also be searched via the ProQuest Dissertations & Theses @ Georgia Institute of Technology database. Electronic full-text of Georgia Tech-authored dissertations is available from 1997 to 2012, as well as for some 1950-1997 dissertations.

Doctoral students may elect to submit their dissertations to ProQuest Dissertation Abstracts for processing and distribution. Authors choosing this option may access the ProQuest Dissertation Publishing – Authors  site for more information or to obtain the appropriate agreement form.  Authors can also reach ProQuest Dissertation Publishing at [email protected] .

Submit a Thesis or Dissertation

Georgia tech policy & copyright.

Since 2004, graduate students have been required to submit their theses and dissertations electronically .

Georgia Institute of Technology policy states that doctoral and master's theses must be openly published and that Georgia Tech is granted a non-exclusive license to distribute and preserve the materials for educational purposes.

Degree candidates agree to the GT Repository License when submitting their final work. By signing the non-exclusive license, authors do not give up the copyright to their work and do not give up the right to submit the work to publishers or share it with other repositories or individuals.

Upon the request of the student and with the consent of the student's advisor, a thesis can routinely be withheld from circulation for one year.

Research arrangements that would preclude publication for an extended time or permanently for reasons of national security or a sponsor's proprietary interest, however, are not appropriate for dissertations or theses. It is anticipated that all doctoral work and a significant amount of master's research will be published in the open, refereed literature.

If a thesis or dissertation contains third-party materials (quotations, images, graphs, photographs, audio or video files, other excerpts, etc.) for which the author does not hold copyright, the author must represent that they have obtained the unrestricted permission of the copyright owner to grant the deposit license to GT and GTRC.

College of Computing Alumna Wins ACM Dissertation Award

Jun 30, 2024 —.

Nivedita Arora receiving the ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award

A College of Computing alumna has earned the highest honor given to doctoral candidates.

Nivedita Arora received the 2024 Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Doctoral Dissertation Award during an awards ceremony on Saturday in San Francisco. Arora, an assistant professor at Northwestern University, is the first Georgia Tech alumna to win the award, which includes a prize of $20,000.

Arora was a postdoctoral researcher at Georgia Tech’s School of Interactive Computing during the 2022-2023 academic year. She also earned her Ph.D. in computer science and her master’s in human-computer interaction from Georgia Tech.

At Northwestern, she directs the  VAK Sustainable Computing Lab , which re-envisions computing from a sustainability-first approach.

“The ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award is the most prestigious recognition for doctoral research in our field,” said Josiah Hester , an associate professor in the School of Interactive Computing who mentored Arora during her postdoc. “The award is a testament to the recipient's exceptional contributions to the field of computing, marking them as a world-class leader and innovator.”

Arora creates sustainable computational materials that harvest energy from their surrounding environments and can be responsibly disposed of at the end of their life cycles. Under the advisement of Professor Thad Starner and former Georgia Tech Professor Gregory Abowd, she won the dissertation award for her work involving interactive sticky notes.

The interactive sticky notes perform computing tasks and allow wireless communication without battery dependency.

Through her dissertation , Sustainable Interactive Wireless Stickers: From Materials to Devices on Applications , Arora demonstrated that interactive sticky notes can capture audio, store it as memory, and relay it to another location. For example, an Amazon Alexa user can communicate commands to Alexa without being nearby.

“With rising climate change and e-waste, it is imperative to build computing technologies with a sustainability-first approach,” Arora said. “My dissertation represents this core thinking. I am honored that ACM has recognized my research on sustainable computational materials. I am extremely grateful to my advisers, collaborators, friends, and family for their support.”

Her dissertation also earned Outstanding Dissertation recognition from Georgia Tech’s College of Computing in 2023. She also won the college’s 2022 Outstanding Graduate Research Assistant Award.

Arora was a finalist in the 2022 Fast Company Design Innovation Competition. In 2021, She won the ACM Gaetano Borriello Outstanding Ubiquitous Computing Student Award and was named an EECS Rising Star and a Foley Scholar.
