Would you like to embark on a doctoral study experience?  At the TRIAGON Academy, we offer a Ph.D programme “ Doctor of Philosophy ( Ph.D. )” which can be specifically tailored to your research needs.

Our full-time flexible doctoral programme is aimed at Master’s graduates who want to further their research skills and competency in areas such as: technology, humanities, social sciences, economics or art, at the highest academic level .

You will obtain your doctorate in the area of your chosen specialisation by means of an independent research or innovation academic project which will culminate in the final doctoral thesis.  During your entire research process , you will be supervised individually and professionally by top-class academics .

The final objective of the Ph.D. program is to successfully defend the doctoral thesis .

Thanks to the flexible mode of study and regular academic exchange with your doctoral supervisor, who will guide you all the way through the doctoral journey, you can continue  your professional career while fulfilling your doctoral research commitments.

Recognition and Accreditation of the Study Programme

Activities accompanying doctoral studies & dissertation

Doctoral activities and the research supervision for your doctoral thesi are the two core elements of our Ph.D. programmes at Triagon. Both elements are in interlinked and form the basis of your succesfull achievement of academic practice.

We recommend that you keep a log of your doctoral activities during the entire doctoral journey. This documentation serves as a basis for ensuring your progress while deciding upon addition guidance and assistance the doctoral student may require.

In the first two years of your doctoral program, the TRIAGON Academy organizes two virtual doctoral seminars. Both seminars are mandatory – and an essential part of your doctoral activities.

Seminar I – Advanced Research Methods and Academic Writing

Advanced research methods at doctoral level: In this seminar you  will have  the opportunity  to refresh and  consolidate your skills in the areas of scientific work and academic writing .  This ensures high academic standards in the presentation of your written content .

Seminar II – Doctoral Conference

The aim of this conference is to prepare you for adequate  academic communication, particularly in preparation for the doctoral thesis defence.  In this confernece you will be asked to present your research project comprehensively and work in progress (which shall include data collection and possible pilot study) to the public and other academics in your field of study. The conference will span three days where you will present , reflect and discuss .The doctoral confernece will be organised in a hybrid way and therefore you will have the opportunity to either travel to Malta to be physically present at our campus or else participate in the comfort of your home.

Your Doctoral thesis

In the last phase of your studies, you will focus on the writing of your doctoral thesis . As part of your ongoing academic support, you will regularly  be asked to participate in supervision sessions and tutorials . You will receive detailed advice  on your research direction as well as on the form and content  of your thesis. This will enable you to conduct independent research and finaliseyour doctoral thesis on time.

Your advantage : At the TRIAGON Academy, you  will be  provided with a personal supervisor who will accompany you professionally during your doctoral journey.

Course of study and contents of the Ph.D.

Your Ph.D. program starts with a comprehensive introductory workshop. During the following introductory phase, you can design your research topic. This will be refined and approved in the course of time in order to determine the form and content of your thesis.

Afterwards, you will regularly participate in individual supervision sessions to document the development of your doctorate where you shall be submitting individual chapters to your supervisor for review and duscussion.

In group or individual tutorials you will receive continuous formative feedback. The respective progress reports are submitted in the form of written drafts, but may also include or be supplemented by other forms of presentation.

Of course, you will have access to our modern online learning library throughout your studies. This offers you comprehensive and detailed learning material.

Your degree is the highest possible academic degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.).

Prospective students must be in possession of:

  • An MQF/EQF level 7 full qualification obtained from a recognised college/Institute/University in the Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Science or Technology (depending on the field of study the learner chooses to focus) followed by an interview which will determine the prospective students’ aptitute for doctoral studies;
  • A First Class Honours degree obtained from a recognised college/Institute/University in the Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Science or Technology (depending on the field of study the learner chooses to focus) followed by an interview which will determine the prospective students’ aptitute for doctoral studies;
  • Relevant publications in referred academic journals in the filed of Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Science or Technology (depending on the field of study the learner chooses to focus) followed by an interview which will determine the prospective students’ aptitute for doctoral studies.

Tuition fees and financing

The monthly cost is €665 (with 36 installments) for a duration of 3 years plus €390 one-time registration fee payable upon acceptance and €390 one-time examination fees payable upon doctoral writing registration and are thus significantly below the costs of other private universities. Each additional semester costs € 3,930. Tuition fees can be paid monthly or semester by semester.

MCAST launches its first Professional Research Doctorate

MCAST announced that a new Professional Research Doctorate (DRes) will be offered at the College. This programme of studies is the first of its kind provided at MCAST. The doctorate is a research-based EQF/MQF Level 8 qualification and focuses on the competitive behaviour of small organisations within small island states. The announcement was made today during the signing of a collaborative agreement with the Malta Chamber of SMEs.

Statistics developed by the National Statistics Office (NSO) have identified around 30,000 small firms operational in Malta. According to the NSO, these small organisations are responsible for more than 65% of employment in Malta. The NSO’s findings highlight the importance of conducting research aimed to help small organisations grow and thrive.

Professor Joachim James Calleja, MCAST’s Principal and CEO, said, “The launch of this level 8 programme is the result of years of research and preparation. Our collaboration with industry goes beyond course provision, and not everyone might be aware of the diverse work going on at the College. Our research work aims to provide data and information, which will help industry to make evidence-based decisions. We are confident that the collaboration Malta Chamber of SMEs and the Richmond Foundation will be beneficial to the researchers and also to the growth of SMEs.”

Deputy Principal for Research and Innovation, Dr Ing. Alex Rizzo, said “through the application of mixed research methods, the course aims to unearth much-needed information on the behaviour of small organisations. Driven by grounded research, data obtained will help professionals comprehend better the complex decision making processes and behaviours within small organisations. In turn, potential findings will help researchers understand which best-practise models should be adopted by business-oriented small firms and other small organisations.”

Mr Paul Abela, President of the Malta Chamber of SMEs and Ms Abigail Mamo, CEO of the Malta Chamber of SMEs said, “MCAST is a very important pillar in our education system, and it is also an entity with whom we share many common goals related to how education should contribute to Malta’s economic development. Aimed toward Masters Degree holders, this DRes will run over 5-years on a part-time basis. Students must follow 4 taught modules related to advanced Research Methods during their first year. After completion, successful candidates will progress to the main component of the DRes, namely, the research endeavour. Students must also publish three academic, rigorously researched articles.

Course Overview

Global College Malta’s DBA is a professional doctorate designed for senior managers and leaders in private, public, and not-for-profit organisations. The programme is specifically designed for critical thinkers and practitioners who wish to reflect in-depth on their organisations and society more generally. The format of the DBA is designed so as to allow learners to engage in applied research, bringing established and cutting-edge theory to bear on their practical organisational issues. Students in the DBA programme develop and enrich practice in their respective areas of research interest, as well as contribute to the wider understanding of the underpinning theoretical base for the work.

The structured approach offered by the College’s DBA is based on a number of modules, blending lectures, guest talks, workshop discussions, and student presentations. The doctoral thesis is developed in parallel under guidance from a doctoral supervisory team allocated at the start of the DBA programme. The structured nature of the College’s DBA doctoral research programme helps facilitate the demonstration of an original contribution to knowledge in the academic subject and the field of practice through original research or through the original application of existing knowledge and understanding.

The College’s DBA programme is based on several taught elements and a thesis. Each ‘taught’ module on the DBA programme is typically structured around a three-day intensive teaching block, plus support from the College’s teaching team and doctoral supervisors. Work on the culminating doctoral thesis begins in parallel with the taught modules. The College’s DBA is designed to allow for successful completion in three years.

The College welcomes applications for its DBA programme from all potential students and most important in the decision to offer a place is the College’s assessment of a candidate’s potential to benefit from their studies and of their ability to succeed in the DBA. Consideration of applications is based on a combination of formal academic qualifications and other relevant experience. The standard entry requirements for the programme are as follows:

  • Candidates will be expected to have strong professional experience, and be operating at a level within their organisation or profession where they can facilitate change that contributes to practice and/or exhibit powers of creativity and innovation;
  • Candidates for the DBA will normally have successfully completed a Masters of Business Administration at Level 7 of the Malta Qualifications Framework or similar with an average performance of merit or higher within the ten years prior to applying to study in the College’s DBA programme. Applicants will also normally have worked for a minimum of three years at middle or senior managerial levels since completing their MBA;
  • Entry to the programme on a similar basis may be possible if the applicant possesses a relevant Master’s degree, or equivalent, from a recognised higher education institution or awarding body.
  • Since the College’s DBA programme is delivered entirely in English, applicants must be able to demonstrate strong proficiency in the English language. Non-native speakers of English must have a minimum score of IELTS 6.5 or equivalent with a minimum of 5 in each component or English B2 referred to as CEFR. Very exceptionally, holders of a Global College Malta Masters’ degree awarded within two years prior to entry to the College’s DBA programme may be exempt from these English test requirements; and,
  • Candidates wishing to be admitted to the DBA programme must have access to an Internet-connected computer.

The College’s Academic Dean will interview all candidates together with at least one other member of the teaching/supervisory team. The interview panel will carefully consider the appropriateness of the candidate’s background and professional standing for the study of a DBA. If the interview panel is convinced that the candidate has a very strong likelihood of successfully completing the DBA programme and that they are adequately supported through their place of work then they will normally be accepted onto the DBA programme.

GCM-DBA01 DBA Research Design and Philosophy The module seeks to develop DBA candidates’ systematic and critical knowledge of research methods in business and management studies at a doctoral level and build upon their experience of undertaking research at a Masters level. At the end of the module, you will be able to:
GCM-DBA02 Literature Review for DBA Studies The module aims to prepare DBA candidates to undertake an advanced search and critically analyse literature on a specific topic in the discipline of Business and Management and assess its contribution to knowledge. Candidates will learn how to organise and synthesise literature in order to write a critical and detailed review of what is known about a specific topic. The module will further enable DBA candidates to identify gaps in extant knowledge about specific academic and practitioner issues and explain how their proposed doctoral research will contribute to both theory and organisational/management practice. At the end of the module, you will be able to:
GCM-DBA03 DBA Research Methods The module aims to develop a comprehensive understanding of qualitative and quantitative research methods, so as to equip DBA candidates with the knowledge and skills necessary to undertake doctoral level study involving qualitative, quantitative and/or mixed methods research. GCM-DBA04 Translating DBA Research into Practice The module examines how a DBA student might contribute to developments in Business and Management studies and have a positive impact on management and organisational practices. At the end of the module, you will be able to:
GCM-DBA05 Progression to DBA Research Stage The module requires the DBA candidate to present and defend an advanced research proposal incorporating an introduction and justification for their proposed study, a demonstration of critical engagement with current research at the forefront of Business and Management studies, a demonstration of a clear and advanced research methodology, and a clear articulation as to how the proposed research will create new knowledge, advance Business and Management theory and management and organisational practices. GCM-DBA06 DBA Thesis The aim of the College’s thesis research module is to produce managers and leaders who, through demonstrable advanced scholarship, are able to conceptualise, design and implement a research project for the generation of new knowledge at the forefront of Business and Management studies. Candidates will be expected to combine their academic and business expertise in order to be able to make important contributions to both Business and Management theory and also organisational and management practices. Principles of Business Management

The module features the fundamentals of management through the functions of planning, organising, controlling and leading. It highlights the strategic approach towards managerial decision-making and provides knowledge to students on how to approach problems, challenges and opportunities linked with human resources, motivation and teamwork. It features the key fundamentals on communication, change management and leadership and highlights the importance of ethical behaviour and social responsibility in managerial decision-making. At the end of the module, you will be able to: • Exercise management and supervision in the key functions of management, namely, planning, organising, controlling and leading people. Facilitate the process of managing stakeholders and corporate governance in a competitive environment; • Study and influence culture and managing organisations through behavioural and situational models through motivational techniques; • Address and apply intelligence in unpredictable change in organisations through teams and team work and demonstrate a level of power and reasoning to manage activities effectively and efficiently; • Develop performance management systems of people and set measurement control systems; • Demonstrate aptitude and capabilities to complete basic finance and budgetary control; and, • Demonstrate an advanced understanding of relevant ethical expectations and any professional regulatory compliance requirements as set out by national and international bodies.

Fundamentals of Management Accounting and Finance

Students will have knowledge and understanding of key components of accounting and finance including measuring and reporting financial position, performance and analysing and interpreting financial statements based on cash-flow statements, profit and loss account and balance sheets. The Module provides a sound basis of cost-volume profit analysis, costing and budgeting. Furthermore, it will provide students with knowledge, skills and competencies on how to make basic capital investment decisions and how to manage working capital. At the end of the module, you will be able to: • Exercise management and supervision in the key functions of accounting namely, measuring and reporting financial performance, making capital investment decisions, and doing budgets whilst reporting cash flows; • Study and influence accounting and finance managerial decisions focusing on making capital investment decision and financing the business in the long and short-term; • Be competent in understanding the regulatory requirements as set out by national and international bodies; • Address and apply intelligence in unpredictable change in organisations through teams and team work and demonstrate a level of power and reasoning to manage the finance of an organisation effectively and efficiently; • Demonstrate an advanced understanding of relevant ethical expectations and any professional regulatory compliance requirements as set out by national and international bodies.

Human Resources Management

The module provides students with the knowledge and understanding of strategic HRM and also the skills, abilities and competences to prospective and present managers on how they maximise the potentials of human resources in an organisation. It provide the tools, knowledge and understanding on how the management of human resources management contributes towards corporate objectives. Students will enhance their knowledge and understanding of how HRM theories including performance management, recruitment and selection, employee welfare, ethics and corporate social responsibility, reward systems and talent management can be applied in practice. The module is intended to give students the know-how to resolve HRM issues and highlights the current trends in this important discipline in management. At the end of the module, you will be able to: • Be able to critically evaluate and apply theories to practice the main concepts and theories of human resources management; • Be able to identify, assess and practice the key functions of the HR functions from a strategic and operational perspective; • Be able to identify, determine and apply to practice the international human resources management perspective to issues, challenges and opportunities within the HR function of both public and private sector organisations; • Apply human resource management within a restructuring context and general organisational context; • Be able to evaluate and apply in practice the basics of human resources planning, recruitment and selection; • Be able to identify, evaluate and apply the basic concept of performance and reward management; • Be able to assess and critically evaluate the challenges, issues and opportunities for employee involvement, employee relations and human resources training and development needs for both public and private sector organisations; • Be able to identify, evaluate and apply practice in employee welfare principles; • Be able to apply HRM models, frameworks and HRM paradigms within organisational culture and diversity at the workplace; and, • Demonstrate an advanced understanding of relevant ethical expectations and any professional regulatory compliance requirements as set out by national and international bodies.

Strategic Management

The module covers the different environments within which companies and public sector organisations have to operate and gives the students the appropriate knowledge to assess the strategic capabilities of an organisation. It further provides views and concepts of strategic choices and strategic purposes of organisations and highlights the key components of organisational culture and how this influences and impacts the strategy. Various types of business strategies are explained and tools, models and frameworks on how corporate strategy can be applied through diversification are part of the module content. The module includes theories and practical models that can be applied through innovation and mergers, acquisitions and alliances. Leadership and strategic change and how these are applied within a firm are key elements of this module. At the end of the module, you will be able to: • Identify the key components of a strategy and issues associated with organisational strategy; • Appreciate the contributions of different academic disciplines and theoretical lenses to practice strategy analysis; • Analyze macro- and micro-environments on organisational strategy and identify successful strategies for business organisations; • Use various concepts and technique to recognize threats and opportunities in the marketplace; • Identify and analyses how strategic capabilities can provide sustainable competitive advantage; • Understand and undertake stakeholder analysis and corporate responsibilities performance models; • Analyse the influence of organisational culture on strategy; • Identify and assess generic business strategies and internationalization and their benefits in a competitive environment; • Determine the appropriate choices between mergers and acquisition and alliances; • Assess the value of strategic change; • Demonstrate an advanced understanding of relevant ethical expectations and any professional regulatory compliance requirements as set out by national and international bodies.

Logistics and Supply Chain Management

The module is designed to give students specialist knowledge within the growing field of supply chain management. A well-implemented supply chain management system has been identified as a key tool in the success of today’s leading businesses. Supply chain management involves the co-ordination, production, shipment and delivery of goods from the point of production to the point of consumption. The students are exposed to the learning areas of operations, supply chain management, logistics and purchasing and they will obtain in-depth knowledge in the field of supply chain management. At the end of the module, you will be able to: • Exercise management and supervision competency at a level appropriate to MQF Level 6 expectations in the key functions of supply chain management and understand the role and structure of supply chains; • Critically recognise the importance of supply chains in organisations and how information technology systems are shaping global and regional supply chains; • Study with appropriate criticality the influence and effects of supply chains on financial performance and why it is essential to have a strategic approach towards supply chain management; • Critically apply intelligence in unpredictable change in organisations through supply chain, operations and logistics teams and team work and demonstrate a level of power and reasoning to manage a supply chain within an organisational culture context; • Demonstrate competences at a level appropriate to MQF Level 6 expectations in cost and service trade-offs within supply chains and how they can influence strategic direction and value creation through supply chain actives, especially within a global business and competitive context; • Demonstrate competence at a level appropriate to MQF Level 6 expectations in understanding the functions of procurement, inventory management, warehousing, distribution and customer service in a supply chain; and, • Demonstrate an advanced understanding of relevant ethical expectations and any professional regulatory compliance requirements as set out by national and international bodies.

Marketing Management

The module will enhance the knowledge and understanding of how marketing management can contribute towards organisational goals and how marketing strategies can be planned, executed and reviewed within a specific business environment. It will further enable students resolve marketing issues and provide solutions from a managerial perspective taking into consideration the product, price, place and promotion (the ‘marketing mix’). At the end of the module, you will be able to: • Exercise management and supervision in the area of Marketing Management at a level appropriate to MQF Level 6 expectations and understand the role and structure of the marketing function; • Critically recognise the importance of marketing in organisations and assess the role and importance of scanning internal and external environment factors and their impact on the marketing function; • Critically appreciate the importance and contribution of marketing as a business strategy that interfaces between the organisation and its customers; • Critically apply intelligence in the decision-making process that consumers go through as they make a purchase and understand the factors that affect the decision-making process including environmental, psychological or sociocultural factors and their impacts on marketing strategies; • Demonstrate competences  at a level appropriate to MQF Level 6 expectations  in analysing the difference, nature and structure of B2B and consumer buying and its link with the marketing strategy; • Demonstrate competence  at a level appropriate to MQF Level 6 expectations in understanding the marketing mix of pursuing specific segments and understand the benefits and risks of segmentation; • Critically determine the sources of market research and appreciate ethical concerns surrounding marketing research; • Critically apply intelligence in gaining insight into the nature and usage of the three main elements of new media: email marketing; wireless marketing and interacting television marketing and the use of digital marketing; and, • Demonstrate an advanced understanding of relevant ethical expectations and any professional regulatory compliance requirements as set out by national and international bodies.

Effective Leadership

In the absence of effective leadership organisations will fail. This module explores the attributes of what makes an effective organisational leader, the techniques they employ and how effective leaders are essential to sustainable succession planning. At the end of the module, you will be able to: • Critically understand and effectively apply appropriate leadership behaviours in different organisational circumstances; • Effectively collaborate with colleagues to ensure the development of complementary and appropriate leadership approaches across the organisation; • Is able to critically monitor leadership behaviours across an organisation through a formal and continuing research process; and, • Demonstrate an advanced understanding of relevant ethical expectations and any professional regulatory compliance requirements as set out by national and international bodies.

Enterprise for Managers

This module will provide students with knowledge and understanding relating to key business and management areas of leadership, innovation and entrepreneurship. It will enhance the knowledge, competence, skills and abilities of students in determining and understanding how a business can be established and how to monitor whether it is operating effectively and efficiently so as to provide sustainable profitability and long-term competitiveness. At the end of the module, you will be able to: • Have self-critical competency in negotiating a loan or other form of funding for a proposed business start-up; • Critically appraise a proposed business start-up to establish whether it is a sound business proposition; • Be competent in being able to sell business products or services to discretionary purchasers; and, • Demonstrate an advanced understanding of relevant ethical expectations and any professional regulatory compliance requirements as set out by national and international bodies.

The module explores how businesses are increasingly using digital frameworks to pursue business goals. Electronic business (e-business) is the approach a company takes to become a profitable business through the portal of the Internet. The module explores why E-business includes a much wider range of businesses processes, such as supply chain management, electronic order processing and customer relationship management. At the end of the module, you will be able to: • Critically analyse the internal e-business capacity of an organisation; • Be able to create a critical e-business plan for a chosen organisation; • At a level consistent with learning at MQF level 6, be able to present proposals underpinning an e-business plan to the management of an organisation; • At a level consistent with learning at MQF level 6, be able to produce a monitoring report on the progress of the agreed organisational strategic plan; and, • Demonstrate an advanced understanding of relevant ethical expectations and any professional regulatory compliance requirements as set out by national and international bodies.

Business and Management Ethics

The module includes a critical approach towards the on-going and relevant debate on the importance on business ethics and synthesise the knowledge required by managers to lead employees in an ethical approach and how managers will develop their response to issues and circumstances that require an ethical approach. The module also extends and develop the capabilities and skills of the students to act, manage and take ethically correct decisions in a business environment. Establishing close and productive relationships with customers is considered to be key to marketing success, and customer equity has become an important marketing performance indicator.Based on a solid understanding of traditional customer relationship management and contemporary customer engagement theories, this module discusses the creation of high quality and engaging customer experiences designed to secure repeat business. At the end of the module, you will be able to: • Critically evaluate consumer behaviour concepts and theories; • Critically analyse factors affecting consumer behaviour; • Critically evaluate relevant literature in consumer behaviour; • Critically apply consumer behaviour theories to inform marketing strategies/recommendations; • At a level consistent with MQF Level 6 expectations, present research ideas based on an evaluation of theory and research; and, • Demonstrate an advanced understanding of relevant ethical expectations and any professional regulatory compliance requirements as set out by national and international bodies.

International Management

This module provides learners with an in-depth analysis of contemporary international business activities, allowing them to develop their skills and expertise in prevailing international marketing and communications as well as enhance their understanding of cultural and ethical contexts. At the end of the module, you will be able to: • Critically understand the concepts of international business at a time of unprecedented globalisation and global change; • Critically understand the contemporary international business environment and the influencing factors of politics, social and culture, economics, technology and the law; • Critically understand the dynamics of global strategy including markets, competitiveness and emerging change factors; • Critically understand cross-cultural management and international business expectations; • Critically understand international business ethics and corporate social responsibility; • Critically understand how international operations can impact upon marketing and promotion, operational decision-making and organisational structures and design; and, • Demonstrate an advanced understanding of relevant ethical expectations and any professional regulatory compliance requirements as set out by national and international bodies.

Organisational Behaviour

The module provides a context for students to appreciate the complexities of managing people and organisations in the 21st century. The content of the module focuses on the challenges of managing individuals, teams, groups and organisations, by examining a variety of issues inherent in modern organisations and, importantly, the skills that managers require to deal with them. At the end of the module, you will be able to: • Have a critical understanding of how human resource strategies and practices can contribute to effective performance in organisations; • Demonstrate competencies appropriate to MQF level 6 of the HR skills and best practices needed to manage people and organisations successfully; • Have a critical understanding of the key psychological factors in the behaviour of people and organisations; and, • Demonstrate an advanced understanding of relevant ethical expectations and any professional regulatory compliance requirements as set out by national and international bodies.

Employee Relations

The module explores the terrain of employee relations. It examines the historical development of the employee relations contexts within which organisations operate and the continuing diversity of these contexts in the face of the apparent pressures of globalization. The module also considers the implications of employee relations contexts for management and for organisational performance, and assesses whether managements may actively deploy partnership approaches to secure collective employee voice without conflict. The module explores how businesses are increasingly using digital frameworks to pursue business goals. Electronic business (e-business) is the approach a company takes to become a profitable business through the portal of the Internet. The module explores why E-business includes a much wider range of businesses processes, such as supply chain management, electronic order processing and customer relationship management. At the end of the module, you will be able to:

  • Critically analyse the internal e-business capacity of an organisation;
  • Be able to create a critical e-business plan for a chosen organisation;
  • At a level consistent with learning at MQF level 6, be able to present proposals underpinning an e-business plan to the management of an organisation;

Management Research Project

Each student will be guided on a one-to-one basis by an appointed supervisor on how to identify an appropriate research topic, an appropriate approach to adopt in seeking to address the agreed research question and how to apply relevant research philosophies and strategies. Students will be expected to be able to justify identified research questions and test emerging research hypotheses. The module necessarily seeks to build on BABM19. At the end of the module, you will be able to:

  • Manage and transform a research proposal into a research study that has the potential to add value to the area being explored;
  • Manage the planning of a research project, taking into account potentially complex and unpredictable situations, and including research milestones;
  • Undertake an analytical literature review in the chosen discipline area and, from this review, prepare an appropriate bibliography;

This module provides an in-depth review of the building blocks of modern finance theory and introduces the workings of financial markets at the graduate level. The analysis begins by establishing the characteristics of a rational, risk-averse and utility-maximising investor. The module then develops an understanding of the role of financial markets, security analysis and valuation, efficient market theory, asset pricing theory and portfolio management. The module explores the key elements of finance, how financial markets operate, pricing important financial assets and understanding the models in which finance is based upon. Market efficiency is also explored as is the pricing of derivative securities such as stock options and the determination of the exchange rate in the foreign exchange market. PhD Program Structure

Doctoral research phases.

This Doctor of Philosophy degree program has a clear milestone system made up of eight successive phases. Students are initially registered as MPhil. Students. The enrollment status is upgraded to Ph.D. status after at least 24 months of part-time study once the candidate passes the Transfer Interview. Transfer is allowed on clear evidence of progress in their work (Phase Five). The applied milestone system provides a rigorous quality assurance system making sure that only those who reach the expected level of scholarship are allowed to move on.

Students work closely with the assigned supervisors to go through the Eight Phases of the program. Research Candidates are to write a thesis that clearly demonstrates competence in the subject area at an advanced level and contribute towards new knowledge. The length of a thesis is of around 100,000 words. At the end of each term, the researcher and their supervisors must each submit a progress report to the SMC Doctorate Committee. When the supervisors are satisfied that the work is ready for examination, the thesis is submitted to an appointed Board of Examiners. After examination, the Chairperson may give approval for the oral defense or ask for resubmission with corrections.

  • Proficiency in advanced math  Students should provide evidence of successful completion of advanced math coursework such as calculus, linear algebra and statistics.  
  • Proficiency in programming  Students should be proficient in Python, R, or an analogous programming language, with experience writing at least 1000 lines of code.  
  • Relevant work experience   Ideally, applicants will have some relevant work experience in either computer programming or a related field. Internships or other related work are acceptable.  
  • A disciplined and motivated mindset  Harder to measure, but equally important, successful applicants will have a resilient spirit, a hunger to learn, and a knack for solving problems through technical innovation. With courses taught by CMU faculty from the #4 computer science school in the country, a consistent and conscious effort will be required to master each topic.

Student Visas

Since this program is fully online, enrollment in this program will not qualify students for any type of visa to enter or remain in the United States for any purpose. 

Time and Attendance Requirement  

Classes for the program will be taught on the U.S. Eastern Time zone schedule, and students must be available to attend all live classes, regardless of location.

U.S. Sanctions; U.S. Sanctioned Countries

Individuals who are the target of U.S. sanctions or who are ordinarily resident in a U.S. sanctioned country or who live or expect to live in a U.S. sanctioned country while participating in the program are not eligible for admission to this program due to legal restrictions/prohibitions and should not apply. U.S sanctioned countries are currently Belarus, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Russia, Syria and the following regions of Ukraine: Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk. In addition, all or a portion of this program may not be available to individuals who are ordinarily resident of certain countries due to legal restrictions.  

Applications received from these individuals will not be accepted. Value Added Tax (VAT) and Other Taxes

The tuition, required fees and other amounts quoted for this program do not include charges for applicable Taxes (hereinafter defined). The student is responsible for payment of all applicable Taxes (if any) relating to the tuition, required fees and other amounts required to be paid to Carnegie Mellon for the program, including any Taxes payable as a result of the student’s payment of such Taxes. 

Further, the student must timely make all payments due to Carnegie Mellon without deduction for Taxes, unless the deduction is required by law. If the student is required under applicable law to withhold Taxes from any payment due to Carnegie Mellon, the student is responsible for timely (i) paying to Carnegie Mellon such additional amounts as are necessary so that Carnegie Mellon receives the full amount that it would have received absent such withholding, and (ii) providing to Carnegie Mellon all documentation, if any, necessary to permit the student and/or Carnegie Mellon to claim the application of available tax treaty benefits (for Carnegie Mellon review and completion, if warranted and acceptable). 

Taxes mean any taxes, governmental charges, duties, or similar additions or deductions of any kind, including all use, income, goods and services, value added, excise and withholding taxes assessed by or payable in the student’s country of residence and/or country of payment (but does not include any U.S. federal, state or local taxes).

The University of Texas at Arlington’s graduate engineering programs were ranked among the top 100 in the nation in the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings, the latest sign of academic excellence at UTA.

Additionally, the civil and mechanical engineering graduate programs each improved by three spots over the previous year.

“There are many ways to determine the quality of academic programs. These rankings are a very visible piece of information for students as they consider where to pursue a graduate degree, but certainly not the only mechanism by which students and families determine quality and potential for student opportunities,” said Peter Crouch, dean of the College of Engineering. “As a Carnegie R-1 university in the heart of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, UTA provides our students unique opportunities to pursue research and careers with many of the top companies in the world.”

Seattle University enhances Graduate, Online and Professional Education to meet the needs of today’s students with a nod to the future via expanded courses, state-of-the-art facilities and enhanced programming.

Seattle University is ushering in a new era of graduate, online and professional education with a wave of advancements aimed at enriching the student experience—from specific programs to physical spaces for learning—while meeting evolving academic interests and career trends. The university’s recent enhancements include state-of-the-art facilities for executive and hybrid education, strategic program expansions and a commitment to lifelong learning.

While Seattle University has always offered a range of graduate and professional level options, including certificate programs, the university has made a greater commitment to amplifying graduate school with an emphasis on providing a high-quality academic experience for those who are in-person and online. To this end, Graduate, Online and Professional Education is a new unit that is multidisciplinary and meets students where they are professionally or where they want to go, says Trish Henley, PhD, Vice Provost for Graduate, Online and Professional Education and Dean of Graduate Education.

“The educational and upskilling needs of our students and alumni continue to evolve well after they have completed their traditional degree programs,” says Henley. “Seattle University is committed to building adult education programs that are responsive to changes in labor trends and technology skills, thus supporting the educational needs of our alumni and community partners throughout their careers.” 

While the needs of our students may not change, often their career paths do, notes Henley, citing that on average, people switch jobs five times within their working years.

Like our undergraduate students, Seattle University is committed to providing a tailored and fulsome experience for graduate and professional students, all underscored by a holistic Jesuit model of educating the whole person. It’s part of the university’s long-term vision for graduate and professional education.

“One of the things we are charged with is building an exceptional student experience,” says Henley, and that includes meeting graduate and professional students where they are and offering flexibility with evening and weekend classes and online learning that is engaged and connected with peers who are in-person. And, post-pandemic, 80 percent of adult students want a hybrid or fully online experience, says Henley.

As of fall 2023, SU’s graduate programs have 2,241 graduate students—and 748 law students—enrolled, with 22 percent being international students. “Fifty percent of our students are Gen Z,” she explains. “We are thinking about how we are building our graduate programs and what a younger generation expects and needs.”

Seattle University’s commitment to excellence extends beyond campus, with strong partnerships with industry leaders like Boeing, Expeditors, Costco and others. This collaboration enhances educational outcomes and job opportunities for students, aligning academic rigor with real-world demands. 

Cutting-Edge Learning Environments

A major highlight of Seattle University’s investment in graduate programs is the redesign of learning spaces within Hunthausen Hall. This overhaul was not merely cosmetic but focused on pedagogical innovation and inclusivity for both in-person and remote learners—it also reflects the focus on working in teams and community building within a cohort. Henley emphasizes the importance of creating a cohesive experience regardless of the student’s physical location. “We wanted to build a space where remote and hybrid learners can have the same experience, not a lesser one,” says Henley.

The revamped spaces feature advanced technology, mobile amenities, breakout areas—u-shaped learning pods for in-person students, equipped with wall-mounted flat screen TVs and Alexa-like speakers—and a serene spot outside that features a meditation garden, which is a testament to the university’s dedication to holistic education (it’s also a perfect quiet spot for executive leaders, for example, to take a phone call.) Soon the building will be enhanced even more with the installation of an art wall.

In addition to infrastructural upgrades, staff were relocated strategically to reside in Hunthausen. Most of SU’s Graduate, Online and Professional Education staff have moved into new offices in the building. This move also includes the Albers’ Executive Leadership certificate program and Leadership Executive MBA to the modernized spaces tailored to foster leadership in its students.

Expanding Program Offerings

Beyond the dramatic changes to the physical spaces and building modifications are the notable additions to the courses and programs at the heart of graduate and professional learning. Recent additions include an Online Master of Mental Health Counseling, Online Master of School Counseling and Online Master of Criminal Justice. Looking ahead, the unit is currently accepting applications for four additional programs launching this summer and in the fall, including the Online Master of Science in Cybersecurity Leadership, online options for the Executive Leadership Certificate program and the Sport and Entertainment MBA and the new Hybrid Master of Education in Transformational Teaching and Learning. The university also already offers an Online MBA and an Online MS in Business Analytics and online and hybrid programs in the School of Law. These offerings respond to industry demand and the preferences of a diverse student body, with an eye toward lifelong learning and career adaptability.

Through her social-media pages, Phoebe Gates has been sharing her life with her hundreds of thousands of followers, from her stances on national issues to videos of bubble-tea dates with her dad.

With parents like Bill and Melinda Gates , it's no surprise that she appears to be an overachiever: This month, she graduated from Stanford University after wrapping up her degree in three years. She's already teased the release of her sustainable fashion tech platform, has attended fashion weeks around the globe, and has become an outspoken social activist. Oh, and she's dating Paul McCartney's grandson.

Here's what we know about her life and interests based on what she's shared on TikTok.

Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates, who married in 1994 and divorced in 2021, have three children: Jennifer, 28, Rory, 25, and Phoebe, 21. The children all went to Seattle's Lakeside School , a private high school their father also attended, and are now on different trajectories.

Jennifer is a decorated equestrian who just graduated from medical school, while Rory is a congressional analyst, according to a 2023 Puck report. While her brother stays out of the spotlight, Phoebe is sharing her life online, and has ambitions in the fashion industry.

The three Gates children will inherit at least some of their parents' wealth: Bill Gates has said he plans to leave them "only" $10 million each.

"I definitely think leaving kids massive amounts of money is not a favor to them," Gates said in a 2013 Reddit "Ask Me Anything." "Warren Buffett was part of an article in Fortune talking about this in 1986 before I met him, and it made me think about it and decide he was right."

Today, nearly five decades after cofounding Microsoft, Bill Gates has a fortune of about $134 billion, according to Forbes . He left Microsoft's board in 2020 — although is still reportedly "intimately involved" at the company — and has remained focused on the Gates Foundation, which he once ran with French Gates . She also  became a billionaire following their divorce.

She shares glimpses of her parents on her social media pages, which have accumulated hundreds of thousands of followers.

As of June 2024, Phoebe Gates has 424,000 followers on Instagram and 244,000 followers on TikTok.

A day after posting a video of her sharing bubble tea with her dad in October 2023, she gained over 59,000 TikTok followers, according to analytics website Social Blade .

In the clip, which has received 16.7 million views on TikTok and uses "As It Was" by Harry Styles as a backing track, Phoebe sits opposite her billionaire father as they both poke straws into cups of bubble tea and smile at one another overlooking a Manhattan skyline.

Bill Gates has made appearances on other creators' TikTok accounts in the past, often participating in math or art challenges, although he does not have an account himself.

Gates just graduated from Stanford University, and she has previously vlogged about her college life.

In an interview with the sustainable fashion brand Reformation, which Gates promoted on her Instagram page in March 2023, the billionaire's daughter said she was majoring in human biology at Stanford University. 

She has previously showcased her dorm room and filmed vlog-style updates about her life at college. In one clip posted in December 2022, she filmed herself riding a bike to a stats class, later showing herself making a very student-esque pasta dish for dinner.

In June 2024, she graduated after just three years, Nylon reported. At the ceremony, her mom, Melinda Gates, gave the commencement speech.

Phoebe Gates blogged her day for Nylon, sharing that she celebrated the milestone with a party attended by her mom and dad.

"So grateful to have my parents by my side on this day," she wrote.

She is passionate about sustainable fashion and is pursuing entrepreneurial opportunities in the industry.

On TikTok, Gates has previously posted about attending fashion week in Copenhagen and New York. She has also shared informational clips about sustainable fashion and promoted buying secondhand clothes. 

According to Vogue , Gates is co-launching her own fashion platform, called Phia, with her fellow Stanford student and roommate Sophia Kianni (pictured above left). The outlet reported that it has already landed a partnership with fashion house Stella McCartney for a bag collection that will celebrate women in tennis.

She has previously posted clips of herself speaking about access to contraception at events , including Goalkeepers , hosted by The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The 21-year-old activist appears to be taking after her parents, especially her mother, who has advocated for access to birth control around the world for many years.

While Bill Gates appears in only a few of her TikToks, her mom has been featured much more prominently on her account. 

Phoebe Gates has posted several snippets on TikTok that show her discussing access to contraception with Melinda. 

"So you're a huge advocate for contraceptives. I mean, you've always hammered this into me since I was a child, about deciding for my body and having body autonomy," Phoebe Gates said in a clip posted in January 2023, where Melinda talked about the importance of access to family planning.

In an on-screen caption on a TikTok post from September 2022, Gates referred to her mother as her "inspiration." 

She is dating Paul McCartney's grandson, Arthur.

In her June 2024 graduation diary for Nylon, Gates shared photos of herself with her boyfriend, Arthur Donald. Alongside one of the images, she joked that he "cleans up nicely," while in another, he carried her on his back.

Donald, 25, is the oldest of Paul McCartney's eight grandchildren, People reported. He is the son of the Beatles' star's daughter Mary and her ex-husband, Alistair Donald.

He grew up in London and attended Yale University, according to People. He is an investor at the Collaborative Fund, a venture capital firm "for entrepreneurs pushing the world forward," according to its website .

Scholarships: Master by Research and Ph.D. Programmes offered by UM

The University of Malta seeks to attract top quality students from countries outside the European Union/EEA and is offering tuition fee waivers of 40 to 100 per cent awarded to most deserving students.  Bench fees for certain programmes may still apply.  The fee waiver will apply for the normal duration of the programme being followed.  If extensions of the period of study are required, these may not necessarily be eligible for a fee waiver.

Only applicants who have been accepted unconditionally to read for a Master by research or a Ph.D. on a full-time and part-time basis are eligible to apply.

Professional doctorates and MBA-type programmes are not eligible.

How to apply for UM Doctoral Studies

*Masters Programmes ‘mainly by research’ refers to programmes where the dissertation/project is assigned 60 ECTS or more.

Students are to submit a request to be considered for a fee waiver by sending an email to the International Office indicating the UM Applicant ID (student number) as shown in the letter of acceptance and ‘University of Malta Postgraduate Scholarship Application’ in the subject line.

Requests for these scholarships will be evaluated by an UM Ph.D. and Masters (by research) Degree Scholarship Selection Board whose decision shall be final.

The following documents should be attached to the application email:

  • Copy of the Acceptance Letter
  • Detailed Curriculum Vitae, and
  • A motivational letter, and
  • Copy of Passport (details page)

For each candidate, the International Office will request an Academic Recommendation Form from the Head of Department, Supervisor or Director of the academic area concerned.  This document seeks to provide insight to the academic aspects of the research.

Candidates that meet the necessary eligibility requirements will be invited to attend an online interview with the Ph.D. and Masters (by research) Degree Scholarship Selection Board.  

Scholarship applications from students who have already started their programme of studies at the UM cannot be considered.

Requests are to be submitted within  one month of receipt of the unconditional letter of acceptance,taking into consideration also the deadlines indicated below:

The UM Ph.D. and Master (by Research) Degree Scholarship Award Criteria approved by Senate are as follows:

  • Academic ability of the applicant and the quality of the research proposal (60%):

Academic ability: academic track record; evidence of academic excellence and rigour; publications; strong academic reference (if available); ability of the candidate to undertake the proposed research and bring it to a successful completion

Research proposal quality: validity of the hypothesis; relevance of research; relevance and currency of any citations and references

  • The quality of the motivational letter (10%):

quality of language and syntax; connection of research proposal to candidate’s current or intended occupation and career demonstration of knowledge about and commitment and passion for research topic

  • Performance during the interview (10%)

clarity of communication in the English language; ability to follow and answer questions; suitability of temperament and evidence that candidate will be able to proceed along the designated research plan

  • Candidate’s personal circumstances and financial need (10%)

taking into account the stage in the career of the candidate, other means of support and the possibility to undertake the programme of studies without the scholarship. 

  • Contribution to the UM and to Malta as a result of the research being undertaken (10%).

In determining whether the candidate should be granted a full or partial fee waiver (see the percentages awarded in the table above), the Scholarships Selection Board should be guided by these considerations:

  • Will the candidate’s research interests, skills, experience and/or competences bring significant added value to the UM research community?
  • How do the candidate’s personal circumstances make them more or less likely to proceed on their studies at UM without a waiver?
  • What other means of support are available to the applicant since this scholarship covers tuition fees only?
  • Is the nationality and/or place of habitual residence of the candidate a priority area for the foreign and/or economic policy of the Malta Government? (This includes those countries in receipt of official Overseas Development Assistance).

Requests for scholarships will be evaluated by a Scholarships Selection Board to ensure awards are granted to deserving candidates.  The decision of the Scholarships Selection Board shall be final.

These scholarships are available to non-EU/EEA applicants who have been accepted unconditionally to read for a Master by research or a Ph.D. on full-time and part-time basis. Scholarship applications from students who have already started their programme of studies at the UM cannot be considered. Applicants for Professional Doctorates are not eligible to apply. The UM PG Scholarships Board will require an online interview with the applicant. The scholarships consist of the waiving of the annual tuition fee applicable for the Master by research or Ph.D. Programme being followed.  The Scholarship does not provide support for travel cost to and living costs in Malta.  The applicants will need to ensure they have the means to support themselves throughout their studies in Malta.

Applicants who are in receipt of a full scholarship (covering tuition fees and living costs) from another sponsoring organisation are not eligible to apply.  However, applicants who hold a partial scholarship or maintenance grant to cover living costs from another organisation may be considered.  Such a scholarship should be disclosed to the Selection Committee when applying.

Students are requested to familiarise themselves with the information available on the International Office website which provides information regarding visa, residence permits, bank accounts, health screening, English language requirements, and other details relevant to studies at the University of Malta and living in Malta .

All applicants are notified through a formal letter that is sent by email. Students who are awarded a fee waiver shall be required to commit themselves to seriously engage in their studies, register monthly progress with their academic supervisor/course coordinator and complete the approved programme within the established time frame.
