Ph.D. Program Details

Program requirements.

Doctoral students must complete the required courses for the  master's degree . Beyond these, there are no specific required courses. Students concentrate on completing two additional tasks: their comprehensive exams and successful defense of a dissertation making an original contribution to scholarship and research.

LaDonna Bowen ( [email protected] , 404.894.3198) advises all graduate students in the HSTS M.S. and Ph.D. programs. To request a permit or a directed reading/independent study, visit to the online request page .  Important forms and information for the HSTS graduate programs can be accessed online.

Graduate students in the School of History and Sociology (HSOC) are encouraged to meet with their academic advisor and the Director of Graduate Studies to plan schedules, verify degree requirements, and develop an overall plan of study.  Advisors can also offer guidance about a variety of research and teaching opportunities.

The Comprehensive Exams

Students pursuing the Ph.D. will typically enroll for a third year of graduate courses (directed readings and, when appropriate, core electives) to help them prepare for a set of comprehensive examinations covering three fields.

For students concentrating in technology, science, and modern history, fields must be distributed in these areas:

  • history of technology and/or science
  • modern history (global or with a specific geographic focus)

Those concentrating in the sociology of science and technology must complete exam fields in:

  • sociology of science and/or technology
  • social theory and social structure

Students choose a third field suitable to their scholarly interests in consultation with their faculty advisors.

At most, one of the three fields may be taken under the supervision of faculty residing outside HTS.

The Dissertation

The key requirements for the Ph.D. degree are the writing of an original doctoral dissertation and the successful defense of its conclusions in an oral examination. With the assistance of their primary faculty supervisors, students first prepare a prospectus, which must be read and approved by three other members of the faculty. The prospectus also provides a basis for grant and fellowship applications. The final dissertation is read by the supervisor and four others, including at least one person from another unit at Georgia Tech or from another university.

Georgia sees its youngest female mayor in state history

Brooke huckaby, 21, is the mayor of arabi.

The youngest mayor in Georgia history.

ARABI, Ga. (WALB) - A 21-year-old Georgia woman is launching what she hopes will become a distinguished political career.

Brooke Huckaby, 21, is the youngest female mayor in Georgia state history, and the youngest female mayor in United States history, but her accolades do not stop there.

In addition to being the mayor of Arabi, a Crisp County town of just under 500 people, Huckaby is also a student and employee of the Georgia Department of Agriculture.

Huckaby is pursuing a degree in agricultural technology from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. When she is not running a city or engaged in her academics, you can find Huckaby working part-time as a support services worker with the Georgia Department of Agriculture.

When asked about what inspired her to run for office, Huckaby said,” I’d say that one thing that really inspired me, it was just the lack of interest in all the people my age, they don’t really care about politics, and it really inspired me to take the jump in and get a head start on it. The older generation is not always going to be around to handle things for us.”

While running for office some citizens questioned her ability to lead at such a young age, but Huckaby believes this is the best place to learn more about government.

Huckaby may only be 21, but she did not go into the job blind. Her father Craig Huckaby was the previous mayor of the city. He has served as her mentor since she took office in January of 2024.

Lindsey Sword has served as the city clerk under both mayors. She tells WALB that working with the younger Huckaby has been a pleasure.

“Oh, it’s been great! I like having somebody that can think of newer things and bring new/more youth to the community versus some of our all these older council men that we have got,” Sword said.

Huckaby’s typical day consists of everything from schoolwork, to signing off on work orders for the city, to working out of Tifton’s Georgia Department of Agriculture office, to aiding scientists in agriculture research.

“I feel like I’m living three different lives sometimes because I’m bouncing from an interview like this to going to class, and then I’m going to work balancing all that has, not I would say been a struggle, but it has been challenge, one that I feel like I’m up to”, says Huckaby.

This early start in Huckaby’s political career begs the question, ‘What will she do next?’.

The Department of Psychology is dedicated to student instruction, serving the community, and the discovery of knowledge through empirical research. The department houses classrooms, laboratories, and equipment for study and research in the areas of sensation and perception, cognition, physiological psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology, psychology of religion, and clinical psychology.

Undergraduate

The mission of the Psychology B. S. Program is to: 1) provide students with a course of study that reflects both the breadth and depth of the various fields of psychology and Georgia Southern University’s mission of fostering a learner-centered culture that prepares us to think, lead, teach, and serve; 2) inspire students to be sensitive to cultural issues and individual differences, bridge scientific theory to practice, and promote personal and professional growth, in ways that mirror Georgia Southern University’s values of collaboration, academic excellence, discovery and innovation, integrity, openness and inclusion, and sustainability. This mission will be accomplished by providing students with a high-quality education in psychology, opportunities for experiential learning, and mentorship. Our mission statement also reflects the American Psychological Association’s (APA) Undergraduate Program Guidelines (see Table 1 below) that emphasizes learning content knowledge (Guideline 1), scientific inquiry (Guideline 2), social and ethical responsibility (Guideline 3), and professional development (Guideline 5).

Students earning a bachelor’s degree in Psychology will:

  • recognize, compare, and apply concepts and theories from the majority of the core domains of abnormal, cognitive, developmental, learning, physiological, and social psychology;
  • recognize, apply, and evaluate the use of descriptive and inferential statistics in psychology and research methods in psychology;
  • respect sociocultural diversity and individual differences, recognize the psychological origins of prejudice and discrimination, and recognize the extent that different cultural factors relate to psychological phenomena;
  • recognize the value of psychology in professional and personal domains.

The Department of Psychology offers two graduate programs: the M.S. in Psychology and the Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology.

The Master of Science (M.S.) program in Psychology produces graduates who are knowledgeable in specific content areas of scientific psychology as well as skilled in conducting independent research. Guided by psychological science and a dedication to preparing students for a psychology (or psychology-related) doctoral program, college teaching, or other employment within the social sciences, the department faculty provide graduate students with rigorous coursework and opportunities to engage in one-on-one research collaborations and pedagogical instruction.

The Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) program in Clinical Psychology trains doctoral-level professional psychologists to practice psychotherapy and assessment skills in underserved rural areas. This training is accomplished through coursework, as well as practica, capstone activities, and internship experiences. The Psy.D. program is directly involved in providing health care and human services in the region, both by educating practitioners of applied psychology who have voiced a dedication to continuing practice in rural areas and by offering practicum experiences in which students provide clinical service to those in our predominantly-rural region.

The Psy.D. program is accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA).

In the ever-evolving landscape of sustainability research, one name shines brightly—Dr. Katie Foster, a postdoctoral researcher who earned her doctorate in Integrative Conservation and Anthropology at the University of Georgia. Recently honored by the UGA Graduate School for her outstanding contributions to research, Foster’s journey is marked by passion, innovation, and a commitment to making a difference.

For Foster, receiving the Excellence in Research Award was not just an acknowledgment of her own achievements but also an opportunity to celebrate the remarkable work of her peers. “It was an honor to be recognized by the Graduate School,” she shared. Throughout her graduate education as a doctoral student of Anthropology in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences , Foster was supported every step of the way by the Graduate School. From funding pre-dissertation fieldwork to providing travel grants for research presentations, Foster was able to take advantage of opportunities offered by the UGA Graduate School to promote the success of graduate students across the university.

When asked about her experience at UGA, Katie stated that so many people had impacted her graduate career – “I am immensely grateful for my advisor, Dr. Laura German, who opened numerous doors for me throughout my graduate career and for Dr. Don Nelson, who introduced me to the wonderful group of researchers at the Network for Engineering with Nature.  I also want to acknowledge the dedicated faculty of the Integrative Conservation (ICON) Ph.D. Program and Department of Anthropology as well as our amazing staff, Talley Vodicka and Margie Floyd, who kept everything running behind the scenes. Tyra Byers, the Director of the Sustainability Certificate Program, has been another valued mentor and colleague. I am consistently impressed by her pedagogical creativity and ability to build long-term ground-breaking partnerships, which has been deeply impactful for students, faculty, and the greater Athens community in the realm of sustainability.”

This award is a testament to the research and impact that Katie has had during her time at UGA, and speaks to the nature of the the Integrative Conservation Ph.D. Program at UGA, which drew Katie to UGA. “The [ICON] program uses an innovative approach to train students to be conversant across disciplines and to develop applied skills for dealing with complex socio-ecological challenges,” she said. “ICON is also a fantastic community of researchers whose work is a constant source of personal and professional inspiration.”

Her dissertation research focused on mining conflicts in the Peruvian Andes and the implementation of international Indigenous rights laws on Free, Prior, and Informed Consent. She has written on a variety of conservation issues including global agricultural value chains, third-party environmental certifications, and the illegal wildlife trade. Outside of her academic pursuits, Foster has been involved in policy advocacy at the UN climate negotiations (COP 20, 21, and 28) and worked for several years in the non-profit sector in sustainable urban agriculture, native plant conservation, and environmental education.

Her abiding appreciation for gardens, soils, native plants, and wildlife informs her academic interest in ecological restoration and commitment to teaching about sustainability in its many facets.

As she continues to push the boundaries of sustainability research, Foster’s dedication, expertise, and unwavering commitment to making the world a better place serve as a beacon of hope for future generations.

The University Graduate School congratulates Katie Foster and looks forward to seeing the impact of her research.

The Excellence in Research award recognizes outstanding research by graduate students. This award is established by the Graduate School in connection with UGA Public Service & Outreach and the Office of Service-Learning. Five awards of $1,000 are given annually, one from each of the following five areas: Fine Arts & Humanities, Social Sciences, Life Sciences, Mathematics and Physical Sciences, and Professional and Applied Studies. Students who graduate in the calendar year prior to the award being presented at the Annual Research Award banquet in the spring are eligible. Each graduate department may nominate one student and recipients are selected by a faculty committee. Learn more here.
