Breaking the Code: What Motivates Adult Learners?

As eLearning designers, our mission is to engage a very special audience: adult learners. This isn't about just slinging content their way and hoping for the best. We need to deeply understand adult learning psychology to develop courses that not only attract but also engage and educate our learners. But here’s a crucial insight: adult learners can be quite the skeptical audience. They often come with a mixed bag of experiences—some good, some downright discouraging. In fact, a study by the International Journal of Educational Technology found that 58% of adult learners are initially reluctant to digital learning due to past negative experiences. Additionally, as the McKinsey Global Institute reports, up to 375 million workers (or 14% of the global workforce) will have to switch occupational categories by 2030 due to digitization, automation, and advancements in AI. This rapidly changing landscape can induce a mix of anxiety and resistance among adult learners who may feel overwhelmed by the need to adapt continually. Yet, the demand for eLearning solutions has never been greater, with the market projected to reach $325 billion by 2025 according to Global Market Insights. Your role? Transform these challenges into opportunities. By crafting eLearning experiences that are relevant, responsive, and rewarding, we can flip the script. Let's give those who have had less-than-stellar past experiences compelling reasons to change their minds and fully engage with our courses.

Mistakes to Avoid When Using AI to Create eLearning Courses

It seems like everyone's using AI to create eLearning courses these days, doesn’t it? It's easy to get caught up in the excitement and think of AI as a silver bullet for all your training challenges. But here's the real talk: AI isn't a magic solution. While it’s transforming the way we build courses, there's a real risk of becoming too dependent on this technology. This overreliance can lead to a drop in the quality of your courses—something you definitely want to avoid. It seems like everyone's using AI to create eLearning courses these days, doesn’t it? Earth's gravity knocked pyramid-size asteroid off course during recent ultra-close flyby, NASA images reveal

New photos of the recently discovered asteroid 2024 MK, which zoomed past Earth in late June, reveal that the massive space rock's orbit has been significantly altered by its close approach to our planet.

Blurry images of an asteroid stacked next to each other

Late last month, a gigantic asteroid larger than the Great Pyramid of Giza hurtled between Earth and the moon at more than 21,000 mph (34,000 km/h) . The rare, ultra-close encounter allowed astronomers to capture the first-ever pictures of the space rock, which revealed that the near-Earth object was lightly knocked off course by our planet's gravitational pull — forever changing the asteroid's journey around the sun.

The asteroid, named 2024 MK, is roughly 500 feet (150 meters) across, making it big enough to wipe out a large city . The " potentially hazardous " space rock, which has an irregular and elongated shape, was first spotted barreling toward Earth on June 16 by the NASA-funded Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) in South Africa.

On June 29, just 13 days after it was discovered, 2024 MK reached its closest point to Earth as it skimmed our planet's orbit at a distance of around 184,000 miles (295,000 kilometers) — or around three-quarters of the distance between Earth and the moon .

Astronomers at NASA's Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex in California monitored the flyby using the Goldstone Solar System Radar telescope. By bouncing radio waves off the space rock as it shot past Earth, the team created grainy "bistatic" images of the asteroid, which helped them determine its exact shape and map out the concavities and ridges on its surface. The new photos were released July 3 by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).

Just two days before the flyby, on June 27, the same telescope also captured images of the much larger "planet killer" asteroid 2011 UL21 as it passed by our planet at a distance of around 4.1 million miles (6.6 million km) . These pictures revealed that this mountain-size space rock has a secret moon hiding in its orbit .

A diagram of the orbit of asteroid 2024 MK

The new observations of 2024 MK revealed that the space rock's trajectory has shifted since it was first discovered. This is likely because Earth gravitationally tugged on the asteroid as it passed by us, pulling it slightly closer to our planet.

This alteration was quite significant. The asteroid previously orbited the sun every 3.3 years, spending most of its time in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. However, scientists now believe that it will take 24 fewer days to complete the route, according to JPL.

— 'Planet killer' asteroids are hiding in the sun's glare. Can we stop them in time?

But luckily, "its future motion shows that it [still] does not pose a threat to our planet for the foreseeable future," NASA representatives wrote in a statement.

MK 2024 was originally scheduled to make its next closest approach to Earth in 3037. However, this could now happen several months earlier than expected due to its new orbital trajectory. It is now unclear how close it will get to us or if our planet's gravity will further alter its orbit.

Senior House Democrat Rep. Nadler Reverses Course—Now Says He Supports Biden

A top Democrat in the House, Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., said Tuesday that Democrats “have to support” President Joe Biden, walking back calls he reportedly made in private for Biden to step down in the race—an indication Democrats may be coming to terms with Biden’s refusal to drop his re-election bid.

Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) speaks at a news conference on the Protecting Our Democracy Act, at the ... [+] U.S. Capitol on September 21, 2021 in Washington, DC. (Photo by Kevin Dietsch/Getty Images)

Nadler told reporters Monday Biden’s insistence on staying the race was “dispositive,” adding “whether or not I have concerns is beside the point,” he said, according to multiple reports .

Nadler was one of four Democrats who said privately in a phone call with colleagues over the weekend that Biden should drop his bid, multiple outlets reported, bringing the total number of elected Democrats calling on Biden to step down to nine.

Nadler’s reversal represents a broader shift in Biden’s favor as the president has firmly dismissed any calls for him to step aside.

After returning to Washington Monday from a holiday recess, no new congressional Democrats called on Biden to step down, but multiple voiced their support for the president, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and Rep. Steve Horsford , D-Nev., chair of the powerful Congressional Black Caucus.

Surprising Fact

Trump also predicted Monday that Biden would stay in the race, telling Fox News’ Sean Hannity “he’s got an ego, and he doesn’t want to quit.”

Democrats are reportedly deeply divided about the future of Biden’s candidacy. Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., told reporters “we’re not even in the same book” while exiting a meeting of House Democrats at Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee headquarters Tuesday.

Key Background

Biden has repeatedly dismissed calls to step down in the race, rejecting his detractors as “elites” and “billionaires” who don’t represent the “average voter,” who he insists want him to continue running, he said Monday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” Biden has launched an attempt over the past week to undo the damage from his June 27 debate performance, sitting for a series of interviews, making campaign stops in key battleground states and rallying his supporters in Congress. In a letter to congressional Democrats Monday, Biden told them he’s “firmly committed” to staying in the race and expressed confidence he is the “best person to beat Donald Trump.”

Hurricane Beryl tracker: See projected path, spaghetti models of storm as it hits Mexico

As Hurricane Beryl moves inland over the Yucatan Peninsula, those in its path can expect strong winds, storm surges and damaging waves, the National Hurricane Center announced Friday morning.

As of Friday morning at 7 a.m. CT, the center of Hurricane Beryl , which downgraded to Category 2, was moving toward the west-northwest at about 15 miles per hour.

The NHC expects the hurricane to make a west-northwestward motion during the next day or so.

The NHC said the hurricane's center should cross the northern Yucatan Peninsula Friday and then emerge over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico later Friday night. By the end of the weekend, the hurricane should move northwestward toward northeastern Mexico and southern Texas.

The hurricane's maximum winds have decreased to about 100 miles per hour, the NHC said. As Hurricane Beryl moves farther inland and crosses the Yucatan Peninsula, winds are expected to rapidly weaken. Still, slow re-intensification is expected once Beryl moves back over the Gulf of Mexico.

Hurricane Beryl live updates: Storm makes landfall again in Mexico. Is Texas next?

According to the NHC, a storm surge could increase water levels by four to six feet above ground level in areas where there are onshore winds along the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula within the hurricane warning area. Near the coast, the surge will bring large and destructive waves.

Beryl is also expected to bring large swells to eastern Mexico and the Gulf Coast of the U.S. later Friday. The swells can cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.

Hurricane Beryl path tracker

This forecast track shows the most likely path of the center of the storm. It does not illustrate the full width of the storm or its impacts, and the center of the storm is likely to travel outside the cone up to 33% of the time.

Hurricane Beryl spaghetti models

Illustrations include an array of forecast tools and models, and not all are created equal. The hurricane center uses only the top four or five highest-performing models to help make its forecasts.

Atlantic storm tracker

How much rain will hurricane beryl bring friday.

According to the NHC, Beryl is expected to produce four to six inches of rainfall Friday, with localized amounts of 10 inches across the Yucatan Peninsula. There may also be scattered flash flooding.

From Sunday into early next week, meteorologists expect heavy rainfall of four to eight inches with locally higher amounts across portions of northeastern Mexico and south Texas.

Hurricane warnings, watches

Hurricane warnings are in effect for the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico from Puerto Costa Maya to Cancun, including Cozumel, according to the NHC.

Hurricane warnings are issued when sustained winds of 74 miles per hour or higher associated with a tropical cyclone are expected in 36 hours or less, the National Weather Service said. Hurricane warnings can remain in effect when there is dangerously high water or a combination of dangerously high water and continued high waves, even if winds are less than hurricane force.

There are also hurricane watches in effect for the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula south of Puerto from Costa Maya to Chetumal, and north of Cancun to Cabo Catoche.

Hurricane watches are issued when tropical cyclones containing winds of 74 miles per hour or higher pose a possible threat. The winds may also bring storm surges, coastal flooding or river flooding with them, according to the NWS.

"The watch does not mean that hurricane conditions will occur," the NWS wrote on its website. "It only means that these conditions are possible."

Tropical storm warning

A tropical storm warning is in effect for the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico south of Puerto Costa Maya to Chetumal, and the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico north of Cancun to Campeche.

Tropical storm-force winds can be up to 105 miles per hour and a storm surge could increase water levels by one to three feet above ground level along the west coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in the tropical storm warningarea.

Donald Trump’s youngest son, Barron Trump, received a standing ovation Tuesday at his father’s Florida rally in what the former president suggested was the teenager’s debut on the campaign trail .

Barron, 18, turned and waved to the crowd of Trump supporters at his father’s Doral golf course as the former president praised him for his smarts, demeanor and rising popularity.

“This is a young man. He just turned 18 –  Oh, look at this,” the 78-year-old former president said, stopping as the crowd’s cheers intensified.

“A very young man who is now going to college – got into every college he wanted to and he made his choice,” Trump continued. “He’s a very good guy.”

“This is the first time he’s ever done this, Barron … stand up,” Trump said as his teenage son rose up and gave the crowd another fist pump and wave.

“That’s the first time he’s done it. That’s the first time, right? You’re pretty popular. He might be more popular than Don and Eric, we got to talk about that,” the former president said, referencing his other two sons – both of whom addressed the crowd prior to their father’s arrival.

“Welcome to the scene, Barron,” the ex-commander in chief said, before remarking that Barron “had such a nice, easy life – now it’s a little bit changed.”

Barron was recently seen riding in a golf cart with his father in a leaked video showing the former president slamming President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in the days after the June 27 debate.

In May, the 18-year-old was asked to be a Florida delegate at the Republican National Convention, but he declined the request.

Barron, who at 6-foot-7 inches tall towers above his father, has largely stayed out of the political fray.

The Trump family has not announced which college Barron will attend in the fall.

France's left-wing parties projected to finish first in parliamentary elections, keeping far right at bay

A tense alliance between France’s centrist and leftist parties has kept the far-right National Rally party at bay, according to exit polls, with Prime Minister Gabriel Attal set to resign.

In a surprising upset for the far right, a bloc of left-wing parties is projected to finish first, while President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist alliance is predicted to come in second. Polling agencies suggest National Rally, known in France as RN, is set to come in third, despite having swept to victory after the first round of voting last weekend and polling highest among the parties.

Voter turnout was the highest in decades at 67.1%, and official results are expected early Monday.

Leftist leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon said the results were an “immense relief for the majority of people in our country” and called for Attal’s resignation.

“The president has a duty to call on the New Popular Front to govern,” he said.

However, no single bloc is on course to come close to winning an absolute majority. Without a ruling parliamentary majority, the French government, now made up of rival parties with deep ideological divisions and no clear center of power, is likely to become locked in a political stalemate that may make it difficult to pass new legislation.

Attal, who led Macron’s centrist alliance, announced Sunday that he would submit his resignation Monday morning.

“Tonight, no absolute majority can be driven by the extremes,” he said. “We owe it to this French spirit, so deeply attached to the Republic and its values.”

Macron’s office has said he will wait to make any decisions on a new government, but that he will “ensure the sovereign choice of the French people will be respected.”

Emmanuel Macron exits a polling booth

The snap elections , called to widespread shock less than four weeks ago by French President  Emmanuel Macron , plunged the nation into a volatile, rapid-fire election season that inflamed tensions in the country as centrists scrambled to negotiate with the left to keep the far right from taking an absolute majority after RN took the lead following the first round of voting last month.Since then, more than 200 candidates confirmed they would not stand in the second round to avoid splitting the anti-RN vote, according to local media estimates. Protests also swept the country as demonstrators called on voters to turn out against the RN, with marches in the French capital on Wednesday.

French soccer superstar Kylian Mbappé also urged voters to come out against the far right last week, calling RN gains in the first round of voting “catastrophic.”

RN President Jordan Bardella , a clean-cut, media-savvy 28-year-old, who was hoping to be France's next prime minister, criticized the “unnatural” and “dishonorable alliance” that has “deprived the French people” of an RN victory.

While such tactics may have prevented the far right from implementing its fiercely anti-immigrant, euroskeptic agenda, it has likely left Parliament locked in political paralysis.

What’s next?

A hung Parliament sets up the possibility of political inertia, where parties cooperate through ad hoc alliances on a case-by-case basis to pass legislation, depriving France of a functioning government and potentially deepening the sense of disillusionment already felt by large swaths of the electorate.

This will not only affect France’s domestic policies but also could stifle its international presence at the  European Union  and neutralize its most important leaders on the global stage.

Bardella has said he would not govern France without a majority, and appears to have few allies to choose from, according to the exit polls.

The leftist New Popular Front alliance and Macron’s centrists are projected to win enough seats to form a coalition, but Macron has said that he would reject a coalition that included the far-left France Unbowed party. Macron’s centrists have previously allied with center-right Republicans while in power.

With his presidential term running until 2027, Macron was not on the ballot, but he has said he would stay in office regardless of the outcome of the election.

Ordinarily the president would name   a prime minister from the parliamentary group with the most seats in the National Assembly. But the contentious composition of the government could turn this into a tumultuous process — a prime minister can risk being overthrown through a no-confidence vote if other parties join together.

The leftist coalition, which has promised to raise the minimum wage, freeze food and energy prices, and reverse a law that raised the retirement age from 62 to 64, has not publicly announced the selection of a candidate for prime minister. High-profile figures on that end of the ideological spectrum include Manuel Bompard of the hard-left France Unbowed party and the Socialist Party’s Raphaël Glucksmann.

Samantha de Bendern, a geopolitical commentator for the news outlet La Chaine Info, said France could face a “year of chaos” as parties jockey for power and haggle over who should be prime minister, with Macron unable to call new parliamentary elections until June 2025.

Who is the far right?

While the RN is set to fall far short of expectations, the party is on course to claim more seats than ever before.

The anti-immigrant, euroskeptic RN ran on a platform that promised to “put France back on its feet” by giving French citizens “national preference” over immigrants for jobs and housing, while abolishing the right to automatic French citizenship for children of foreign parents, and repealing some of Macron’s most controversial policies, including his government’s abolition of a tax on France’s richest and pension reforms that saw thousands take to the streets of Paris in protest.

The standard-bearer for RN in these elections is Bardella, the party’s president and a loyal protégé of Marine Le Pen, the party’s ideological leader. (Le Pen is believed to be angling for the French presidency in 2027). With Bardella front and center, National Rally wrenched power from the center during last month’s European Union parliamentary elections.

The party has also gained supporters after Le Pen began steering it away from its roots as an extreme ethnocentric party, as it was under her father, Jean-Marie Le Pen, its founding president who led the party until 2011.

An Ipsos poll surveying over 10,000 voters showed the RN wields substantial support among voters of all ages, with rising support among French youth. A majority of those who identify as “disadvantaged” also overwhelmingly backed the RN in the first round of voting.

RN will be moving forward with the wind in its sails as France enters a period of political uncertainty.

A defiant Marine Le Pen told reporters that her party’s “victory has only been delayed.”
