The majority of people are of the opinion that “organizations are too large and/or too bureaucratic to change” (Maresco and York 2). Well, perhaps some of them are. But Ricardo Semler, the President and CEO of the Semco company, has proven to the world that even the most radical changes are possible. People consider his company as the most interesting in the world, call it the “insanity that works” and describe with many other different words, and all of them are actually right – Ricardo Semler has managed to do something that seems really impossible (“Semco” par. 1).

Brief Background Information

The story about the Semco company and Ricardo Semler usually starts in the following way. The Semco S.A. is a Brazilian company with the annual income of $210 million, which it regularly gets despite the fact that it operates in one of the most changeable economies in the world (Baumgartner par. 3). Founded in 1953, the organization was firstly guided by Ricardo’s father who made it “hierarchical and patriarchic” with “a rule and a policy for just about everything” (“Lessons from Semco” par. 5). When Ricardo joined Semco at the age of nineteen, he suggested implementing many changes. Among other things, he was convinced that the company was too harsh and rigid. Nevertheless, his father disagreed, and everything just went on as usual. The economic recession that overtook the country in the 1980s became the turning point, and Ricardo insisted on his strategy even threatening to resign in case his father disagreed. That is when Semco S.A. got a new CEO and was on the verge of significant changes.

The Fundamental Differences between the Semco Company and Standard Management Approaches

The first thing Ricardo Semler did after becoming the CEO was the dismissal of two-thirds of managers: he left only three people out of twelve. Many of those managers were his father’s friends (“Lessons from Semco” par. 8). He decided to abolish authoritarianism and hierarchy since he believed those decreased productivity. Presently, the employees in Semco are “self-governing and self-managing” and they “have, in most cases, mastered several jobs” (Maresco and York 4). That runs counter to any classical management approach that implies hierarchy and subordination, among which bureaucracy probably goes first on the list (Mullins 47).

The absence of a clear organizational chart is probably the most fundamental difference between the Semco company and classic management approaches. Still, it is not the only one. There is nothing similar in the workweek, the working environment, scheduling, or salary policy either. Ricardo Semler decided to “throw out all the rules” (Maresco and York 4). Employees set production quotas, wages and working hours on their own. Although they are supposed to come to work between seven and nine in the morning and work for eight hours, there can freely leave the site earlier if the work is done. There are no restrictions for traveling. No dress code exists in the workplace since it generates stereotyping. The working places can be organized by employees in their own fashion. Managers and employees make decisions together, and no one has secretaries or assistants. Although managers still exist in the company, their positions are not secure – they can be fired because of the poor scores just as any other employee (Andrewartha par. 5). In the Semco company, “the standard policy is to have no policy” at all (Maresco and York 4). On the face of it, all of this seems to be a strategy for chaos and disaster. Nevertheless, it works.

The Impact of the Semco Management Model on the Human Resource Management Function in Medium-to-Large Organizations

The Semco management model can offer employees the absence of everything they are so tired of at work. No overloaded schedule and working from nine to five. No five-day workweek and a certain amount of vacation. How many employees hate Sundays evenings only because on Mondays they return to the same routine? Semco S.A. does not have any routine. People work there not because they have to work but because they love what they do. They are provided with flexibility and possibility to innovate. They are treated respectfully. Additionally, they can choose their own salaries, which solves another significant problem of HR management. Therefore, that is not surprising that the Semco management model not only attracts the best candidates but also helps to retain the talents within the organization. According to Maresco and York, the annual turnover in Semco S.A. is less than 1%, which is twenty times less than in other organization in the same industry (2). All of this would be especially useful for medium and large organizations since they usually forget about the interests of their employees and focus on the goals of business only.

Nevertheless, no matter how well it all sounds, it is not so easy to implement. As for Ricardo Semler, those changes cost him huge efforts and even problems with his health. His doctor told him that he had “the highest level of stress the doctor had ever seen in a twenty-five year old” (“Lessons from Semco” par. 11). Besides, to achieve the goal, not only the right leader is necessary but right followers as well. None of the things discussed above is easy to do. But in the case of success, a significant breakthrough will follow.

Microbial testing in pharmaceutical waters has traditionally relied on laboratory-based test methods. However, these methods are labor-intensive, subject to false results, provide only a snapshot of water quality, and may take 5-7 days or longer to generate measurements. This means that if the water is out of specification, it is being used for many days in manufacturing before the test results are available. This case study looks at the use of an on-line microbial contamination analyzer, METTLER TOLEDO’s 7000RMS , as a tool for microbial testing in real-time at a pharmaceutical manufacturing site. The 7000RMS detects and enumerates microorganisms as Auto Fluorescent Units per unit volume and measures viable but not culturable microorganisms, providing a far more accurate and complete picture of bioburden contamination and contamination trends due to regular system operation. Real-time monitoring eliminates waiting periods for test results, minimizing risk and reducing costs. 

An alarm was triggered on the ambient WFI parameters during a routine facility walkthrough at a US pharmaceutical manufacturing site. An elevation in the reading from the 7000RMS at the return location of the ambient WFI distribution system, triggering the alert limit. The increase in the reading prompted the facilities and QC microbiology teams to start an investigation to assess the risk to the water quality and identify the root cause of the event.

After Supreme Court ruling, judge considers Trump's immunity claim in classified docs case

Donald Trump is seeking to build on his Supreme Court victory, which provided immunity from criminal prosecution for his official acts as president, by asking judges in his federal classified documents case and in his New York hush money conviction to throw out all of those charges.

U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon postponed deadlines Saturday to debate evidence in the classified documents case and instead asked for written arguments about Trump’s immunity in the next two weeks.

Trump’s lawyers asked Cannon on Friday to halt all action in the classified documents case until she rules whether the charges are valid.

New York Judge Juan Merchan postponed sentencing Trump for his hush-money conviction of 34 counts of falsifying business records, which had been scheduled for Thursday, until September.

When the Supreme Court formally returns the election-interference case to U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, she must weigh which charges are still valid to prosecute.

Neither Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith nor Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has responded to the Supreme Court’s decision yet.

Trump’s lawyers, Todd Blanche and Christopher Kise, have argued the high court’s ruling means each of the judges will have to determine which conduct is official or unofficial – and not use any official conduct as evidence for charges against unofficial conduct.

Here is where the cases stand:

Supreme Court orders 'close analysis' of whether Trump conduct was unofficial

The reason for uncertainty about criminal charges against Trump is because no former president has ever been charged before and the Supreme Court hadn’t ruled on whether they could be.

Until July 1. That’s when Chief Justice John Roberts wrote for a 6-3 majority that former presidents can’t be tried for their official acts, but could potentially be charged for unofficial acts.

The ruling said presidents discussing policy with executive agencies can’t even be questioned about their motives. This ruled out charges involving Trump urging his acting attorney general to pursue allegations of election fraud with officials in swing states.

But the ruling left open the possibility of charges dealing with Trump’s recruitment of fake presidential electors to support him in states President Joe Biden won. Roberts wrote that determining whether Trump's pressure on then-Vice President Mike Pence "requires a close analysis of the indictment’s extensive and interrelated allegations."

“The President is not above the law,” Roberts wrote. “But under our system of separated powers, the President may not be prosecuted for exercising his core constitutional powers, and he is entitled to at least presumptive immunity from prosecution for his official acts."

Trial judges must now determine whether Trump’s conduct for the various charges was official or unofficial.

Judge postpones filings in classified documents case to study Trump's immunity claim

Trump was charged with retaining national defense records and conspiring to hide them from government authorities until FBI agents seized them during a search of Mar-a-Lago, his Florida estate, in August 2022.

Prosecutors have noted the entire case involves conduct after Trump left the White House in January 2021. Smith's team office said Trump did not have legal authority to designate secret national security documents as personal records and send them to his private home. But Trump’s lawyers have argued his decision to ship the documents to Mar-a-Lago was an official act.

In an order Saturday, Cannon scrapped a Monday deadline for Trump to disclose his experts and Wednesday deadlines for prosecutors and defense lawyers to share more evidence in the case.

Instead, Cannon set a deadline July 18 for Smith to respond to Trump’s request for immunity. Trump will have until July 21 to respond.

Cannon hasn’t set a date for a hearing, but said she could still collect more evidence.

Trump’s lawyers want Cannon to only move forward on two issues in the case: Smith's request for a gag order preventing Trump from making comments that could incite threats against FBI agents working the case, and whether Smith was properly appointed to his job as special counsel.

In the Supreme Court’s ruling on immunity, Justice Clarence Thomas, wrote  a concurrence  questioning Smith's appointment, even though that wasn't at issue in the case and many special counsels have been previously appointed under similar circumstances.

Judge in federal election interference must also determine unofficial conduct

The Supreme Court hasn’t formally returned Trump’s election-interference case to Chutkan, under what is called a “mandate,” which might not happen until Aug. 2.

“The judgment or mandate of this Court will not issue for at least thirty-two days,” Supreme Court clerk Scott Harris wrote July 1 to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Chutkan will have to review which charges – if any – can go to trial once she gets the case back.

New York sentencing postponed because of potential immunity

Merchan previously postponed sentencing Trump in the hush-money case, which had been scheduled Thursday, until Sept. 18.

But that’s only if necessary. Merchan plans to decide Sept. 6 whether Trump is immune from the charges, even though his case involves state charges and the Supreme Court was reviewing federal charges.

Trump was convicted May 30 of falsifying records to hide his reimbursement to private lawyer Michael Cohen, who paid $130,000 to silence porn actress Stormy Daniels about alleged sex with Trump before the 2016 election.

The financial arrangements between Cohen and Daniels happened before Trump was elected president. But his series of 11 payments to Cohen – through his private company – happened the first year of his presidency.

Merchan previously ruled that Trump filed an immunity argument in the case too late to be considered.

When President Ronald Reagan was shot by an attention-seeking drifter in 1981, the country united behind its injured leader. The teary-eyed Democratic speaker of the House, Thomas P. O’Neill Jr., went to the hospital room of the Republican president, held his hands, kissed his head and got on his knees to pray for him.

But the assassination attempt against former President Donald J. Trump seems more likely to tear America further apart than to bring it together. Within minutes of the shooting, the air was filled with anger, bitterness, suspicion and recrimination. Fingers were pointed, conspiracy theories advanced and a country already bristling with animosity fractured even more.

The fact that the shooting in Butler, Pa., on Saturday night was two days before Republicans were set to gather in Milwaukee for their nominating convention invariably put the event in a partisan context. While Democrats bemoaned political violence, which they have long faulted Mr. Trump for encouraging, Republicans instantly blamed President Biden and his allies for the attack, which they argued stemmed from incendiary language labeling the former president a proto-fascist who would destroy democracy.

Mr. Trump’s eldest son, his campaign strategist and a running mate finalist all attacked the political left within hours of the shooting even before the gunman was identified or his motive determined. “Well of course they tried to keep him off the ballot, they tried to put him in jail and now you see this,” wrote Chris LaCivita, a senior adviser to the former president.

But the Trump campaign seemed to think better of it, and the post was deleted. A memo sent out on Sunday by Mr. LaCivita and Susie Wiles, another senior adviser, instructed Trump team members not to comment on the shooting.
