Finance Project Topics and Ideas

Review your interests

While considering a topic, ensure that it aligns with your interests, as it is a time-consuming and intensive task that demands attention and commitment. A topic that is in contrast with your interest will yield lesser results as compared to one that you are fully invested in including your time, interest, and passion. You will find your time investment more productive, enjoyable and engaging.

Information Availability

Avoid working on a topic without access to or availability of adequate information or data. You must have checked the availability of the required data that are crucial for your project, be it reports, industry resources, public databases, financial data of government agencies or companies, etc.

Be mindful of the expertise of your project guide/Faculty

You cannot choose and work on a topic that falls outside the purview or areas beyond your guide's expertise. To ensure you get maximum insights, guidance, and feedback, ensure that your topic is within the expertise of your professor.

Consider the scope of the project

Choose a topic that you can complete within the given timeframe. Think thoroughly through the workload and feasibility of the project activities and ensure they can be carried out successfully.

Industry relevance

You do not want to be working on a theme that is dated and has no relevance in the current business scenario. Demonstrating your practical competency and real-world applicability of your knowledge is best done by working on a contemporary topic that addresses the emerging trends and challenges in the business industry.

Twitter employees circulated an open letter protesting expected layoffs, advertising agencies advised their clients to pause spending on Twitter, and EU officials considered a broader Twitter ban. What short-term actions should Musk take to stabilize the situation, and how should he approach long-term strategy to turn around Twitter? Harvard Business School assistant professor Andy Wu and co-author Goran Calic, associate professor at McMaster University’s DeGroote School of Business, discuss Twitter as a microcosm for the future of media and information in their case, “Twitter Turnaround and Elon Musk.”

The Opioid Crisis, CEO Pay, and Shareholder Activism

In 2020, AmerisourceBergen Corporation, a Fortune 50 company in the drug distribution industry, agreed to settle thousands of lawsuits filed nationwide against the company for its opioid distribution practices, which critics alleged had contributed to the opioid crisis in the US. The $6.6 billion global settlement caused a net loss larger than the cumulative net income earned during the tenure of the company’s CEO, which began in 2011. In addition, AmerisourceBergen’s legal and financial troubles were accompanied by shareholder demands aimed at driving corporate governance changes in companies in the opioid supply chain. Determined to hold the company’s leadership accountable, the shareholders launched a campaign in early 2021 to reject the pay packages of executives. Should the board reduce the executives’ pay, as of means of improving accountability? Or does punishing the AmerisourceBergen executives for paying the settlement ignore the larger issue of a business’s responsibility to society? Harvard Business School professor Suraj Srinivasan discusses executive compensation and shareholder activism in the context of the US opioid crisis in his case, “The Opioid Settlement and Controversy Over CEO Pay at AmerisourceBergen.”

Harvard Business School professor Caroline Elkins, who has spent decades studying Africa, explores how this model has become one that business leaders are seeking to replicate throughout the world in her case, “A Marshall Plan for Africa': James Mwangi and Equity Group Holdings.” As part of a new first-year MBA course at Harvard Business School, this case examines the central question: what is the social purpose of the firm?

A Rose by Any Other Name: Supply Chains and Carbon Emissions in the Flower Industry

Headquartered in Kitengela, Kenya, Sian Flowers exports roses to Europe. Because cut flowers have a limited shelf life and consumers want them to retain their appearance for as long as possible, Sian and its distributors used international air cargo to transport them to Amsterdam, where they were sold at auction and trucked to markets across Europe. But when the Covid-19 pandemic caused huge increases in shipping costs, Sian launched experiments to ship roses by ocean using refrigerated containers. The company reduced its costs and cut its carbon emissions, but is a flower that travels halfway around the world truly a “low-carbon rose”? Harvard Business School professors Willy Shih and Mike Toffel debate these questions and more in their case, “Sian Flowers: Fresher by Sea?”

Whenever someone asks me how to get into a field involving programming or machine learning, the advice is always to "do projects and upload them to GitHub."

The same applies to quantitative finance, but what quantitative projects would impress a prospective employer?

Ph.D. Theses

A Ph.D. Thesis is one of the final pieces of academic assessment a student goes through before getting their Doctorate degree in their field of study.

The main aim is to show that the person can study a new idea on their own and explain the findings in a way that's easy to understand.

In an article, What’s the point of the PhD thesis? 1 , (Gould, J. What’s the point of the PhD thesis?. Nature 535 , 26–28 (2016)), Shirley Tilghman, a molecular biologist and former president of Princeton University in New Jersey, says she :

sees merit in the monograph form of the thesis. It demonstrates scholarly ability by requiring students to “frame the historical context of a problem, describe in detail the purpose and execution, and then come to a credible conclusion.”

This gives us insight into how we can create a framework for Quant Finance Project Ideas

Provide the historical context of a problem

Describe in detail the purpose

Describe in detail the execution

Come to a credible conclusion

Finance, Economics, Business Ph.D. Programs

There are Finance, Economics, and Business Ph.D. programs at almost all large research universities (some may have a mixture of these).

This means these programs will have had students who wrote a Ph.D. thesis.

This means that there should be a list of Ph.D. theses for each program that we can find.

Quant Finance Project Idea: Replicate part of a Thesis

What quantitative projects would impress a prospective employer?

The replication of part of a Ph.D. thesis works wonderfully based on the framework from above:

Provide the historical context of the quantitative finance problem

Describe in detail the purpose of your work

Describe in detail the execution (data, programming, math, modeling, algos)

Come to a credible conclusion (show you were able to replicate the thesis)

This write-up then gives you a sense of a historical problem and how someone solved it, and since you already know the answer (they wrote it), you can rest easy in that you won’t get too lost!

Of course, if you just copy and paste their work, you won’t understand it, and if an interviewer asks you about it and you can’t say anything about it, then you fail. But that won’t happen because you care.

The University of Chicago is known for its economics and finance departments (amongst other things), so let’s start there.

I Google “chicago finance phd thesis”.

I click on this and see

I click on the Knowledge@UChicago link and then type finance in the search box

Which gives this result:

research project on finance

Without looking into each document just by title alone, we’ll go with the 5th one, “Machine Learning Models Applied To High Frequency Financial Data”.

So we click that one and arrive at

research project on finance

Let’s look at the first few sentences of the abstract (I left the main idea of each chapter and removed the rest of the description):

Chapter 1 is titled "A dynamic network model for high frequency order flows in financial markets." This chapter constructs a network model for high frequency trading volume data using a regularized vector autoregression moving average (VARMA) method……….Chapter 2 is titled "How useful are machine learning tools in predicting high frequency returns?" This chapter explores the predictability of high frequency returns for 63 exchange traded funds by applying recently popularized machine learning techniques. I consider factor models, LASSO, and random forests….

This looks good, let’s check out the PDF (scroll down the page) to look at the table of contents:

research project on finance

Bingo - we’ll learn about the data, the methodology, some models, what results happen, and their conclusion.

We can reference then thesis when we write up our project and slowly work through understanding what they did.

Personal Example

A long time ago, I was a Statistical Arbitrage Group summer intern at a hedge fund you’ve heard of.

Part of my work that summer was replicating a 1995 Finance Ph.D. thesis at MIT titled Essays on Risk and Return in the Stock Market 2 . The project was replicating Chapter 1 of the thesis, which focused on Improving Covariance Matrix Estimation for large stock portfolios:

research project on finance

It took most of the summer and involved reading the paper, looking up everything I didn’t know, getting the data, presenting why it was important, writing up some Matlab code, showing results, and proving that I had understood it well enough to implement.

How to choose a project

How, then, do you choose a project? Start looking at different departments and their thesis to see if something catches your eye. The idea is to work on something related to quantitative finance that appeals to you so you will see the project through.

That’s all for today :) For more Quant Finance treats, check out our archives .

Stay quanty!

All the best, Sebastian Gutierrez

Dissertation Topics in Finance- MBA, Banking, Accounting Projects-04 (1)

Also known as the study of investments, Finance is a combination of two interrelated subjects – how money is handled and the process of obtaining money. One of the reasons why postgraduate students struggle with their Finance dissertation topics is that they do not spend enough time planning it. It is important for students to be extremely careful while writing a finance dissertation as it contributes a lot to their respective degrees. This blog provides you with the best topics, a dissertation structure, and more.

This Blog Includes:

What is a finance dissertation, why finance dissertation topics are important, tips to find excellent dissertation topics on finance, writing tips for finance dissertation, how to plan your work on a finance dissertation, how to structure a finance dissertation, finance dissertation general topics , topics related to india, mba dissertation topics, banking dissertation topics , accounting dissertation topics, research project example, final consideration and conclusion.

Finance dissertations, as the name implies, are pieces of writing that study a certain finance topic chosen by the student. The subjects covered include anything from the stock market to banking and risk management to healthcare finance. This dissertation gives the student academic self-assurance and personal happiness in the subject of finance. Finance writing necessitates substantial research in order to produce a compelling report.

The majority of students have no idea why finance dissertation themes are so crucial. However, put yourself in the shoes of your lecturer. You’ve already read hundreds of theses. The majority of them covered the same ground — issues that you’re already tired of hearing about. Then there’s a topic with a distinct, intriguing theme. Something that piques your interest and entices you to read more. Wouldn’t you give those pupils some extra credit? You’d do it! This is why there are so many fantastic finance dissertation topics. You can get extra points for your efforts. The topic of your paper might mean the difference between a good and a terrific grade.

It’s difficult to come up with anything unique and interesting. There are, nevertheless, ways to come up with interesting ideas. Here are a few pointers on how to locate them:

  • Read a fantastic finance dissertation and find for areas where further study is needed.
  • Go to the library and read a couple theses to get some ideas.
  • Inquire with a writing agency about some ideas from one of their professional dissertation writers.
  • In writing forums and blogs, ask for assistance. If you ask gently, people will give you some excellent suggestions.
  • Look for ideas on the internet, but don’t use them exactly as they are. Make them distinctive by changing them.
  • Talk to other students who are working on their dissertations and find out what other ideas they had before settling on the present topic.
  • Narrow down your topic : Your financial topic should be narrowed down to a certain niche. It should concentrate on a single area, such as microfinance, microfinance, or online banking.
  • Verify your facts: Finance is a topic that requires a great deal of logical analysis of statistical data. As a result, double-check facts and statistics using credible sources before using them in your paper.
  • Write concisely: You should condense a financial paper into a tight, succinct work, unlike other papers with extended narrative narratives. At this length, the adage of ‘short is sweet’ theoretically applies.
  • Arrange your data neatly: A report that is crammed with numbers and graphs may turn off a reader at first glance. Know how and when to utilise your data for a great financial thesis.
  • Write simply: Avoid using jargon that might be confusing to a non-technical reader. When technical terminology are required, utilise accessible examples to convey them. In a finance dissertation, simplicity is king. So make good use of it.

Dissertation submission is very important to obtain a PG Degree. You are supposed to submit the work by the end of your study course, so by the last year of your degree, you may have got enough ideas and problems dealing with finance. 5 Research Topics for an MBA in Finance Project

Research projects for those pursuing an mba in finance, risk assessment in business, impact of interest rates on the stock market, empowering women through microfinance, determinants of corporate dividend payouts, impacts of corporate social responsibility on the firm’s profitability.

Every student pursuing an MBA in Finance degree will research, compile, and write a final research project. The project should reflect the area of finance in which the student is interested. Nothing drives a student toward a successful career like a passion for the area in which they choose to participate. These five proposed topics are viable projects that, when correctly presented, will satisfy any faculty board reviewing the paper.

A risk assessment project is a safe bet for any MBA in Finance student. The project has no limitations as to the makeup of the corporate example. Some students create a business in virtual reality that faces a real business scenario. Others use information or scenarios available in their current or former work environment. Regardless of where the information comes from, the paper must address the perceived weaknesses of the business in the market. It must allot resources to combat those weaknesses. Areas that must be covered in the risk assessment include:

  • market risk
  • insurance risk
  • strategic risk
  • operational risk

Researching the impact of interest rates on the stock market is an excellent topic for MBA in Finance graduates entering the stock market as:

  • corporate officials

A research paper delving into the mysteries of the connection between interest rates and stock market fluctuations involves some of the most bizarre aspects of:

  • economic growth

A complete analysis of this relationship involves an explanation of stock market jitters. It will include business outlook and a comparison of market conditions during low, medium, and high-interest rate calibrations. Any prospective stock market employer will be interested in a student’s analysis in this field.

The student who wishes to take on the world with a controversial subject can venture into the area of microfinance and its effect on:

  • communities
  • the world in general

Organizations like FINCA , that specialize in microfinance, provide a good start for MBA students looking to make changes in the world business environment. Such a topic would begin with a definition of microfinance and work into the need for its implementation around the world. An analytical study on a subject like this delves into the financial benefits of investing in the bottom layer of the economic world. This project can ignite a smoldering passion about the state of poverty.

Many factors go into a paper along these lines, including:

  • Market forces
  • stockholder expectations
  • risk management
  • product costs

As shown in the International Journal of Financial Studies , this project involves multiple layers of study that embrace nearly every factor that affects business. A student taking on this subject walks the edge of a pitfall. Dividend determinants affect much more than the business. Stockholders demand an explanation of the factors involved and the business demands enough income to continue to grow.

Researching a paper on the impacts of corporate social responsibility in the firm’s profitability is the most difficult subject any MBA student will tackle. The question of business ethics involves an incredible number of intangibles—abstract concepts that are judgment calls. Putting together a paper on this subject involves the definition of those abstract concepts and the implementation of them in the real world. Following the implementation of abstract ideas into the business world to discover the financial impact they create is a walk along a winding road. It leads to difficult decision making on paper and in reality.

A student pursuing an MBA in Finance degree must complete a research project that demonstrates their proficiency in every section of the curriculum. Any of these subjects will fill that requirement if researched and appropriately written.

Finance Research Projects

The Society of Actuaries' Committee on Finance Research (CFR) is seeking proposals for research projects that will produce information, data, theoretical models and/or empirical tools useful to actuaries practicing in investment and other finance-related areas.

The CFR will convene a project oversight group for each project that is selected for sponsorship. The project oversight group will oversee the progress of the project. This oversight group may include members of the CFR, Society of Actuaries' staff, and/or others who are knowledgeable and interested in the subject matter of the proposal.

Projects will be funded or partially funded by the CFR. The CFR will budget funds on a project-by-project basis, depending on the perceived value of a project as determined during the selection process (described below). Larger budget projects may require joint funding with other groups within the SOA and/or other organizations. This may lengthen the decision time for awarding of such projects.

Proposals are welcome any time and will be reviewed for funding consideration by the CFR at its next meeting after receipt of the proposal. It is not uncommon for the CFR to request additional details on a proposal for subsequent discussion and evaluation.

Research Objective

The specific subject matter, methods, and presentation of results are intentionally undefined in this RFP, with the hope that many unique and valuable projects will be proposed. Examples of finance research projects supported by the Society of Actuaries in the past can be found here . In addition, researchers will find other research projects of interest to the CFR under Risk Management, Pension, etc. here . The guiding principle above, of being (immediately) useful to practicing actuaries, should be borne in mind.

To facilitate the evaluation of proposals, the following information should be submitted:

  • Resumes of the researcher(s), including any graduate student(s) expected to participate, indicating how their background, education and experience bear on their qualifications to undertake the research. Global Value Chains and Finance

Research project.

Description

Both the rise of global value chains (GVCs) and financialisation, that is the increased size and qualitative change of financial systems to more market-based forms, are key features of the global economy today. These processes have important economic implications and raise new policy questions, which have become increasingly visible in the Covid-19 crisis and pertinent through climate breakdown. These include, for example, questions about the resilience of and working conditions in GVCs, their development potential for the Global South, ecological limits of the current production and trade system, and issues of financial instability and the role of finance in the necessary socio-ecological transformation.

There are vibrant and interdisciplinary academic and policy discussions which analyse the rise of GVCs and financialisation. However, bar some important exceptions, these discussions have so far taken place in relative silos, neglecting the crucial interactions between those two global processes. The exceptions which exist have been applied to specific issues - , such as shareholder value and lead firm strategies (Palpacuer 2008; Milberg and Winkler 2013), limited access of finance by supplier firms (Whitfield et al. 2020), and financial engineering and tax evasion in the context of global wealth chains (GWCs) (Seabrooke and Wigan 2014; see also Coe et al. 2014) – and specific sectors (largely the commodity sector; e.g. Bargawi and Newman 2017; Staritz et al. 2018). So far there is no systematic and comprehensive analysis of - on the one hand - the role of finance and financialisation in shaping the nature, governance, resilience, and value distribution in GVCs across different sectors,  - on the other hand - the implications that the proliferation and maintenance of GVC has for finance and financialisation processes both globally and domestically in countries of the global South.

This project aims to fill this gap by bringing together leading scholars in GVCs (Maile; Staritz) and financialisation (Bonizzi, Kaltenbrunner, Powell) in the Global South.

The main outcome of the project will be a critical engagement with the costs and benefits of integrating into global value chains (GVCs) and global production networks (GPNs) in the context of ongoing financialization processes within and beyond these chains/networks for countries of the Global South. This includes the identification of specific factors which shape the outcomes of such integration (e.g. the macroeconomic and regulatory framework; financial structures; business strategies) and specific measures to address them.

Carson group projects solid economic expansion and low recession risk for remainder of 2024.

2024 Midyear Outlook estimates two rate cuts and a 17-20 percent total return for the S&P 500

OMAHA, Neb. , July 9, 2024 /PRNewswire/ --  Carson Group released its 2024 Midyear Outlook, " Eyes on the Prize ." The investments research team forecasts an economy that continues to see a solid rate of expansion as a result of strong jobs growth and robust consumer balance sheets. As the research shows, investors are still well-positioned to take advantage of a young bull market ripe with potential and buoyed by strong earnings growth and profit margins, a resilient consumer and easing inflation.

"The data simply does not support the doom-and-gloom forecasts and headlines we've seen. The resilience of the U.S. economy is not to be underestimated," commented Ryan Detrick , CMT, Chief Market Strategist at Carson Group. "We were one of the few places who expected no recession last year and advised investors that stocks would perform well. Now, 18 months later, we still have many positives, thanks to strong consumer balance sheets, healthy corporate profits and likely a more dovish Fed."

The Carson Group Investment team believes inflation will continue to fall and the Federal Reserve will begin cutting rates by September, with a base case of two cuts in 2024.

"Earnings growth will continue to reinforce this young bull market while economic strength will support cyclical stocks. The combination of strong business growth and a resilient economy will create a wealth of opportunities for investors moving forward," explained Sonu Varghese , Ph.D., Vice President, Global Macro Strategist at Carson Group.

Additional takeaways from the midyear outlook include:

Carson remains overweight stocks relative to bonds, with a focus on the U.S.:  A potential major driver for stocks during the second half of this year will be an improvement in inflation, which likely will lead to two cuts from the Federal Reserve this year. This should be a boost to both small and midcaps, areas where Carson remains overweight.

Globally, Carson Group is more neutral on developed markets outside the U.S. and remains underweight in emerging markets (mainly due to China ) .

Industrials and financials are ripe for continued strength after a nice start to 2024. These cyclical areas will benefit from broadening sector leadership.
