'Love Mocktail 2' Review: Krishna delivers a perfect blend of love and laughter
In his debut directorial, Love Mocktail, Krishna had brought together bittersweet ingredients of life through the stories of Adi (Krishna), Aditi (Rachana Inder), and Nidhi (Milana Nagraj). The sequel, which is coming after a gap of two years, has managed to retain the flavour of the original.
The sequel begins with Vijay aka Vijju (Abilash) and Sushma (Kushi Achar) looking for their missing friend, Adi, and they land up at the police station. The two narrate to police inspector (Giri) the events that lead Adi to this situation. Using the beautiful melody, Ninadene Januma, we are shown how Adi is still mourning the death of his wife Nidhi.
However, a letter changes his whole approach to life, and he decides to give a second chance to the idea of marriage. Enters match-maker Jankana, shortly known as Junkie (Sushmitha Gowda), who presents a list of profiles. However, the proposals fall flat. Call it coincidence or destiny, Adi gets to meet his crush, Sihi (Rachel David), who happens to be Viju’s relative. The story takes you back and forth across the different stages of the protagonist’s life. Will Adi accept Sihi, who is going against her parents, or is he still in love with Nidhi? When Adi finally finds his peace in the soul-stirring climax, it all feels justified.
When making a sequel, continuity is the key, and Krishna comes out largely unscathed even when he adopts an unfamiliar storyline. The romance in the film is ably balanced by the humour and sentiment elements, and Krishna structures the narrative in a rather simple way. Even the introduction of a bunch of fresh characters like Sihi, Junkie, Renu (Shwetha) and the grandfather (Ravi Seetharam), he blends them rightly with some of the characters from the original, albeit with a fresh perspective.
While he manages to captivate moments that matter to the heart, the film also gives an important insight into a clinical problem. Scenes with Shi’s grandfather, Krishna’s conversations with Renu, are all wonderful moments that elevate the narrative. The presence of Milana as Nidhi too is as fun as it is emotional. On the performance front, Krishna effortlessly continues from where he left off in Love Mocktail, and the other actors too chip in with effective performances. Abhilash, Sushmitha, and Sushma take care of the humour parts of the film, which definitely come as a whiff of fresh air to this emotional tale.
The captivating visuals of Sri Crazyminds and Nakul Abhyankar’s soulful music make Love Mocktail 2 all the more appealing. The romcom, which ends on a sweet note, leaves the door open for a third instalment. Krishna’s Love Mocktail 2, which is a good Valentine’s season release, not only manages to entertain but also gives heart-warming experiences of individuals at different ages.

Story: Two years since he lost his wife Nidhima (Milana Nagaraj) to cancer, Aditya/Adi (Darling Krishna) is yet to come to terms with it. His friends Vijay (Abhilash) and Sushma (Kushi Achar) remain his pillars of strength during these tough times. Determined to get Aadi to move on in life, Vijay gets match-maker Jankana (Sushmitha Gowda) to set him up. But when he finally agrees to get married again, there’s an obstacle. Will Adi find his happily-ever-after?
Review: When I spoke to actor-director-producer Darling Krishna a couple of days ago, he reiterated multiple times that Love Mocktail 2 was as simple tale that could be split in two halves – the first he said was for die-hard fans of the original Love Mocktail , and the second for more discerning viewers to see how the story progresses. And let me tell you, he wasn’t kidding.
Personally, I thought the first half was quite pointless – a supposedly fun flashback of sorts of the events of Love Mocktail. In fact, I walked out of the theatre last night thinking that if I had caught it from the interval onward that would have sufficed. The thing about both Love Mocktail and Love Mocktail 2 is that these are films based on wafer-thin plots. It’s the presentation that clicked with audiences the first time around and Krishna, it seems, is counting on that again.
While the first film was a mostly fun film about his character Aditya/Adi’s quest to find love, in school, college and as a working professional, with a tragic ending, Love Mocktail 2 explores if time can heal the wounds caused by the loss of a loved one and if a new beginning is on the horizon for Adi. Yes, he does get a new beginning, but it’s not what many of you would expect and you will have to watch the film in theatres to find out what and how.
Since there’s not much by way of a story, it makes no sense delving into that and giving away spoilers. So, let’s look at whether the presentation and the characters click this time around. Last night, the movie hall was almost packed and it seemed that a majority of the audience (mind you, this was a paid premiere) enjoyed the film, especially the first half. I thought that the forced humour in a police station with a female constable who sticks out her tongue and winks at her superior officer after everything she says was in bad taste, but hey, everyone around me was rolling around in peels of laughter.
Love Mocktail 2 brings back most of the principal cast from the original film. Vijay, Sushma, Nidhi, Aditi, and Jo are all there, and the film actually doesn’t benefit much from the inclusion of the last two. Aditi (Rachana Inder) gets one terrible scene and Jo’s (Amrutha Iyengar) arc feels forced in the narrative, only to cater to Love Mocktail fans. The stand-out performers are Rachel David as Sihi, who makes her Kannada film debut with Love Mocktail 2 and Shwetha as Renu. Rachel brings the right amount of cute to her character and is the best thing about Love Mocktail 2. But despite all these cast members and a comedy track with Giri Shivanna, this film is from start to finish about Nidhi (Milana). There’s just a wee bit too much of her in Love Mocktail 2. In fact, Krishna had told me that as a next directorial he’d like to make an intense love story starring him and Milana, considering that she got only one half of the movie in Love Mocktail. But haven’t you already done that with Love Mocktail 2, Krishna?
The actor-filmmaker even manages to throw in a few subtle messages about not taking loved ones for granted, realizing the value of someone only after you’ve lost them, the importance of the tireless work put into running a household by a homemaker, etc. There’s a nod to mental health and the need to seek help too, but that isn’t explored well enough.
Verdict: Truth be told, I have mixed feelings about Love Mocktail 2. But in the larger scheme of things it feels that Krishna played safe by incorporating elements that will appeal to various segments of audiences. What worked for me, may not for another and vice versa. And even though I thought that it was only the last 30-odd minutes that pulled the film together, audiences may find elements that appeal to them at various points of the narrative. That’s why, Love Mocktail 2 may just find takers.

Love Mocktail
Kannada (Theatres)
Director: Darling Krishna
Cast: Darling Krishna, Milana Nagaraj, Rachel David, Amrutha Iyengar
Rating: 3/5
'One-man show' is an often-used term in movie reviews. Milana Nagaraj's impressive show as Nidhi again in 'Love Mocktail 2' shows the power of interesting roles for female actors. Nidhi is one of the most likeable characters in Kannada films in recent times.
She is the soul of the franchise and director-protagonist Darling Krishna is smart enough to retain her, albeit with creative liberty that's acceptable. Krishna also sticks to the strengths of the much-loved 2020 romantic drama: eye-catchy locales, soothing music, and a romantic drama that grows on you.
So after losing his wife Nidhi to cancer, Aadi suffers from depression. His friends Vijay (Abhilash) and Sushma (Kushi Achar) offer him support as Aadi takes help from a psychiatrist. The duo gives Aadi a letter written by Nidhi. It makes him comfortable with the idea of second marriage.
As Aadi begins to meet his potential matches, the story reintroduces the characters of the first part. This includes Aadi's ex-girlfriend Jo (Amrutha Iyengar in a small, insignificant role). The script blows hot and cold in the first half. While a couple of jokes work well, the humour is mostly crude as the film moves aimlessly for a while.
'Love Mocktail 2' finds its rhythm with the re-entry of Nidhi. Milana Nagaraj's effort is a fine mix of understanding the character and bringing new layers to it. Krishna shows he can dig deep in writing if he wants to. The film has sensible arguments on troubled marriages, divorce, and homemakers.
Aadi is caught between moving on from Nidhi and trying to make his relationship work with Sihi (Rachel David in a promising performance). The humour finds purpose and the drama gets engaging and even delightfully mature. Krishna's lazy elegance and brooding expressions along with Nakul Abhayankar's music complement the film's poignant mood. The ending might catch you off-guard like it did in the first part.
It's good the franchise exists as Sandalwood needs more relationship dramas. Even better if they are complex.

Love Mocktail (Duology) ~ An Uncanny Tale of Romance

Love Mocktail 2 Review
Star Cast : Darling Krishna, Milana Nagaraj, Rachel David, Amrutha Iyengar, Sushmitha Gowda, and Ravi Seetharam Music Composed by Nakul Abhyankar Edited by Sri Crazy Mindz Directed by Darling Krishna
Watched it in PVR: Irrum Mazhil (Screen 3), Hyderabad.
Before you pass a judgment that I like films from other languages and not my mother-tongue Telugu, I like films from any language and would a Simple yet pungent dose of Romance love to promote films from other languages more than Telugu films as my friends, close-knit family members, people I mostly hang out with and my groups don’t get a chance to watch those other films as much as I do. Hence, an extra amount of promotions are done from my side to bring those films to their notice and also hopefully your notice. If a Telugu film inspires me to write about it like this, soon I will write about it too. Well, after giving you all this personal information that might be termed unnecessary by some, I just wanted to clear out a few things for regular readers.
What is this Love Mocktail ?
The movie is a Kannada Rom-Com that I have watched after some of my Kannada friends recommended it. And recently got a chance to catch Lock Mocktail 2 at the theatres. Wanted to write about what I liked and what worked in it for me.
Darling Krishnaa wrote, directed, and even produced this series. Milana Nagaraja , his wife in the film and real-life too, seemed perfect as Nidhi. She is the one, who made the film for me. Her performance and screen presence made the simple premise believable and enjoyable too. In a day and age, when over-the-top Television serials are exploring such themes, watching such dramas with romance don’t really bore well with a viewer, in a theatre. While romantic films are being made, everyone is trying to make them as spicy as they can and as lust fuelled as they can, to attract a more impressionable young audience member. This Love Mocktail doesn’t do that and present every problem in life with a spice of comedy .
Cocktails usually work as a mix of two or three drinks and they have to have the correct combination. When it comes to mocktails, they really are mocking us for not drinking alcohol. A correct mocktail though works as a supplement to alcoholic drinks. This Love Mocktail also feels the same. It is a supplement to over-the-top dramas with such romantic drama themes. You don’t feel the necessity to reach out for the tissues while watching it. It is not like the makers are pushing you to feel with them or laugh with them. They are not telling you to feel here, feel there. A background score keeps playing but it is used to add to the content that the scene is trying to tell not to force you to “feel” or “do” something.
Even Darling Krishnaa, the writer and director, doesn’t really go for over-the-top moments to deliver any wisdom or show how love works. He understands that romance lies in simple life moments . The moments that we tend to overlook and his style is simple too. He is not trying to go for symbolism or representation of some sort in his direction. He likes to keep it all simple and to a point, real. The difference between a film and a real-life incident can be noticed in his writing but he has that quality to not overwrite and hence, it is kept simple, mostly believable.
When you feel like his technique has nothing special to offer, his choice of actors surprises you. Everyone is chosen to give their lines an extra believability. It is not about how good are outside these characters but here in these characters, they look perfect. There is no problem of caricatur-ism coming into the writing or execution part as every situation is being played with an intention to make you laugh. Even in serious scenes, there is a constant joke going on. Unless the moment will be completely ruined by that joke, the writer wants to go there and deliver it. This shows how mature Darling Krishnaa is as a writer. How much he understands this romantic comedy writing and how much he is willing to take a risk as well.
To talk about the plot, this is your everyday daily serial. In fact, whatever you can notice happening in a daily serial happens here. But this is a mocktail of emotions while they are cocktails . They are aimed at audiences who believe over the top is life, here these moments are played in a fashion where youngsters can connect with. Hence, you get a mock every now and then, while a serious and sincere tale of romance is going on. For example, the wife of the lead actor, Nidhi , kicks him out of bed when he forgets her birthday. The same man doesn’t try to make it a “big scene” before deciding that he doesn’t need a high-paying promotion if his wife misses him. She complains to him very sweetly that she misses him and he thinks on his own about what is more important to him. She is adamant on many occasions but when he starts to not respond to her calls on the first ring or when he arrives home late regularly, she first scolds him, threatens him that she will kill him if he chooses another woman over her but then respects his decision to work longer for a better life. She keeps complaining at the same time tends to get used to it. These kinds of very day moments that this young generation is not thinking about or making them as big problems, issues in their marital life, are played very naturally.
Even other characters are also used to forward the story rather than using them just for the sake of it. If there is no obsessed lover , then we will not feel that the lead is stuck in his own web of emotions. If there is no widower then we won’t get the monologue that defines the journey of the lead. Even the friends of the lead keep pushing the story in the right direction while acting as comic relief. This kind of writing is something our own industry can learn from and seek. Comedians can be used as characters rather than just comedians for the sake of marketing the project .
The solutions are offered in a comic way. The hero doesn’t try to give a monologue after monologue or doesn’t threaten someone. Just pours his heart out to another widower . Even being haunted by memories is dealt in a comic way. The main character knows that he is hallucinating, but at the same time, he chooses to live with those hallucinations. This kind of writing is hard to find in today’s confusing times. Keeping your sensibilities intact and writing what works for you, is the first lesson every writer should learn . But somewhere, we miss all that in emulating romantic comedies from other languages. While you may take inspiration from them, it is important to keep them as real as fresh as original as you can. Darling Krishnaa without resorting to preaching does the same with the Love Mocktail series of films. His production values do give you an example on how to make a decent film during such an overbearing pandemic.
Music by Nakul Abhyankar should be appreciated for the kind of background score and songs, he gave to the film. He added another layer to the proceedings with his soothing score. It is the score that inspired me to watch the first film, actually.
One of my friends, complained that the execution makes it all look like a web series . Yes, the budgets are tight and one can easily see that the director and producer have kept a leash on the costs. Still, the premise, the writing, and the performances work for the viewers. All in all, I can say that this mocktail of romance and comedy works as a fresh Breeze of air when we visit mountains. You don’t necessarily be craving for something like that but when those valley breezes or winds hit you, you feel relaxed and amazed by the experience . Love Mocktail one and two belong to that category of films. Keep your expectations in check and let the actors familiarise themselves with you for the starting ten to fifteen minutes . This Uncanny mix of romance and comedy with an everyday appeal makes Love Mocktail a fun drink to gulp while you need to bare some pulp.

Aadi was married to Nidhi. After her death, Aadi's life turned pale. But, a couple of years later, Aadi thinks that he could move on and start a new life. Vijay and Sushma, his best friends, decide to support Aadi to settle in life. Sihi loved Aadi deeply during her teens. Will Sihi find Aadi and marry him? Will her family accept this proposal? The rest of the film deals with it.
Star Performance
Krishna has done justice to his role. Rachel David, Milana Nagaraj, Abhilash, and Kushi Achar have done their part well.
Krishna has designed a gripping tale with interesting characters. All the stars fit well in the role and had given an excellent performance that impressed the audience. Besides being an actor, Krishna directed the film, and he excels in that department. The screenplay is neat, and the execution is impressive. The BGM, visuals, and editing are pretty decent.
What's There?
- The performances of the stars are beautiful
- The script, screenplay, and execution are good
What's Not There?
- A few minor errors
Love Mocktail 2 is an excellent film to watch for a different story, gripping screenplay, and the stars' performances.

But the impossibility of the assignment hasn’t stopped the great thinkers of every generation from trying. From ancient Greek philosophers who argued that love couldn’t be separated from unfulfilled sexual desire and obsession to more modern interpretations that see it as a state of being that has to be actively cultivated, it’s hard for an intellectual to resist the temptation to reduce the most powerful feeling known to man to mere words. Related Stories Looking Back at ‘The Lion King’ as a Digital Pioneer and Innovator 30 Years Later Hollywood Should Breathe Easy It Dodged the Sony-Paramount Bullet
In “ The Nature of Love ,” Sophia (Magalie Lépine-Blondeau) might not be arrogant enough to put her own definition out into the world, but she spends her life studying the attempts of those who came before her. As a professor teaching philosophy to senior citizens, she’s constantly able to indulge her curiosity about the conflicting definitions of love that have been floated throughout human history. But all of the Plato and Bell Hooks quotes in the world haven’t been enough to keep the spark alive in her own bedroom.
For the past ten years, she’s enjoyed a comfortable life with a perfectly nice man. Xavier (Francis-William Rhéaume) is the kind of guy who asks his wife’s permission to enter his own bedroom to show her an article about the dangers of the Trump presidency. Well-mannered and self-deprecating, he can hold his own at salons and dinner parties with all of their intellectual class friends while ensuring that spotlight never dims on Sophia. It’s a sensible arrangement, but hardly nourishing to someone who spends her days reading about the men who lost their minds and fought the wars over passionate affairs.
Xavier is so respectful that he can’t muster enough of a spine to even politely ask his wife not to cheat on him, so it isn’t long before Sophia runs away with Sylvain and pushes her husband out of the picture all together. But her euphoric bubble of spontaneous sex and cozy nights in their forest cabin is soon burst when it’s time to trot her new boyfriend out into the real world. Her laptop class friends applaud her decision to sleep with a hot commoner in a condescending noble savage kind of way, but Sophia’s attempts to merge her two worlds quickly remind her why so many people put their passion aside and marry the “safe” partners to begin with. For all the passion Sylvain elicits from her, she soon finds herself embarrassed by his poor grammar and mildly disgusted with his uneducated relatives. The unspoken social pressure becomes so severe that she even considers reconnecting with Xavier as she’s forced to weigh her conflicting desires for comfort and excitement.
As Sophia tries to find a way to square her transcendent urges with her hilariously worldly circle of intellectuals and over-analyzers, she finds herself learning the most painful lesson that an ultra privileged person can learn in our increasingly hedonistic world: You can have almost anything, but you can’t have everything. Love can be an all-consuming fire that burns hot enough to incinerate your entire world while filling you with enough butterflies to justify the cost, or it can be an active choice that you make to share life with another person while helping each other through the hardships and mundanities that life inevitably throws at you. The only problem for most people is that it can’t be both.
A Music Box Films release, “The Nature of Love” is now playing at the IFC Center in New York City. It expands to Los Angeles on Friday, July 12.

Now streaming on:
Writer-director Monia Chokri ’s “The Nature of Love,” is a two-hour foray into longing, self-searching, and passion. Sophia (a magnetic Magalie Lépine Blondeau ), is a philosophy professor who is stably, but stagnantly in-like with her wealthy partner of 10 years, Xavier ( Francis-William Rhéaume ). When they decide to rehab their old summer chateau, Sophie goes to meet the contractor, Sylvain (a charismatic, sultry Pierre-Yves Cardinal ), and finds the sooty wick of her desire reignited. The two strike up a feverish, insatiable love affair that leaves Sophia second guessing the principles of love and comfort, and excitedly toeing the line of making her current life a thing of the past.
Steamy affairs and love triangles are not a recent cinematic invention (after all, “ Challengers ” is one of the biggest bookmarks in this year’s cultural canon), but Chokri takes the familiar subject matter and crafts it with the whimsy of old and the depth of new. References, like to the wintry, taboo romance of “All That Heaven Allows,” feel worn on the sleeve of “The Nature of Love.” Daytime light will suddenly drop out, only to be replaced by smaller, more intimate sources (like a car’s dashboard lights in the film’s first sultry scene). There’s a constant quirk felt in the film’s staging that tugs at smiles and lights your heart aflame alongside Sophie’s.
The film’s score by Émile Sornin feels plucked out of the golden age, as do Chokri’s framing choices. Yet, coupled with these foundational elements is an eccentric modernity and edge that presents itself via Pauline Gaillard ’s witty editing: quick montages cut between charged eye contact and single scenes are shot from numerous unconventional perspectives and spliced together side by side. There is a charm to the fabrication of “The Nature of Love,” a pleasing hyper awareness of the artists’ hands.
Chokri’s writing is sharp, tucking comedy into fleeting pockets of time that run alongside red-hot lust, romantic trepidation, and existential soul-searching. This flood of emotions and how they present within the script is quite similar to the feeling of falling in love, with all its transient giggling, anxiety, and desire. Lépine-Blondeau and Cardinal have an electric chemistry that tips the romance of the film over the edge, and Chokri’s direction is constantly captivating.
The love triangle is carefully considered, and while the Xavier v. Sylvain dilemma falls into aspects of tropes, it serves enough of a purpose to be redeemable. Xavier is wealthy, smart, and cultured, but a placid, sad sack lover. The blue-collar Sylvain is “intellectually modest,” and shows troubling signs of aggression and xenophobia, but is a fiery revelation in the bedroom. These are stereotypes of ilks of men, but Chokri delivers enough peripheral characterization in their writing to grant them true agency, life, and dimension (as do the actors).
What their cut-and-dry base characteristics serve to the story is Sophie’s crisis of self-philosophy, and debate on compatibility v. chemistry. As we get peeks into her lectures on the different theories of love, from Plato to bell hooks, we find her, and ourselves, considering them and failing to identify with a sole source. Sophie tiptoes to the edge of each of her decisions, and then takes a grand jete, leaping into the consequences and then, reckoning.
Whilst exploring her moral fabric via awkward dinner parties and leash-wearing sexual escapades, the film delivers as much hilarity as it does sexy steam and existential inquiry. “The Nature of Love” is a rom-com for the ages, examining the confoundment we find when trying to understand our deepest human feelings, and doing it with the deserved spectrum of “oohs” “hahas” and “oh gods.”

Review: When I spoke to actor-director-producer Darling Krishna a couple of days ago, he reiterated multiple times that Love Mocktail 2 was as simple tale that could be split in two halves - the first he said was for die-hard fans of the original Love Mocktail, and the second for more discerning viewers to see how the story progresses. And let me tell you, he wasn't kidding.
The first twenty minutes gives the feel that like a serial drama. The real movie and fun kick start from the interval block. There are lots and lots of fun and love moments in the second half.
