Today's NYT Connections Hints and Answer for June 21 (#376)

Vivaldi’s email client is now better than ever, 1password adds account recovery codes to curb lockout, quick links, how to share a google docs file, how to share a google sheets file, how to share a google slides file, how to share an html file.

With Google Drive, you can share any Google file (from  Docs , Sheets , or Slides ) online as a web page for anyone to see. You can even share simple HTML files to act as your site's landing page. Here's how to do it.

Sharing a Google file as a web page is a great way to publish information to the Internet for a large audience. Anything you share is entirely public, and---if you use the right search string---it can be found via any search engine as a lightweight page on the web.

When you share a file to the web, Drive creates a copy of it with a unique URL. This allows you to make edits and publish changes when you want to, and it also prevents viewers from seeing any source material.

Remember: anything you publish to the web is available for anyone to see, so you should never include sensitive or private information in your files.

Fire up your browser, head to Google Docs , and then open the file you want to share. Click File > Publish to the Web.

Click "File," and then select "Publish to the Web."

Next, click "Publish" to make your file visible on the Internet.

Click "Publish."

Click "OK" to confirm you want to publish the file to the web.

Click "OK."

You can now copy the link (Ctrl+C on Windows/Chrome OS or Cmd+C on macOS), embed it on your website, or share it via Gmail, Facebook, or Twitter.

A link highlighted and ready to be copied in Google Drive.

If you don't want the page to update automatically whenever you make changes to it, click the arrow next to "Published Content and Settings." Then, click the box next to "Automatically Republish When Changes Are Made" to uncheck it.

Click the arrow next to "Published Content and Settings," and then uncheck the box next to "Automatically Republish When Changes Are Made."

When you want to remove the file from the web, head back to File > Publish to the Web. Expand "Published Content and Settings," and then click "Stop Publishing."

Click "Stop Publishing."

Related: The Beginner's Guide to Google Docs

Head to the  Google Sheets website , open the file you want to share, and then click File > Publish to the Web.

Click "File," and then click "Publish to the Web."

If you don't want to share the entire document, you can choose a single sheet to publish online. To do this, click "Entire Document," and then select the sheet from the drop-down menu.

Click "Entire Document," and then choose the sheet you want to publish from the drop-down menu.

Click "Publish."

Click "Publish."

Again, you can copy the link (Ctrl+C on Windows/Chrome OS or Cmd+C on macOS), embed it on your website, or share it via Gmail, Facebook, or Twitter.

A link highlighted and ready to be copied.

If you don't want the page to update automatically whenever you make changes to it, click "Published Content and Settings," and then uncheck the box next to "Automatically Republish When Changes Are Made."

Click "Published Content and Settings," and then uncheck the box next to "Automatically Republish When Changes Are Made."

To stop publishing the page altogether, head back to File > Publish to the Web, and then click "Stop Publishing."

Click "Stop Publishing."

Related: The Beginner's Guide to Google Sheets

When you share a Slides file to the web, Google Drive acts as a player and allows visitors to view your presentation on your page. You can set slides to auto-advance at 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 15, 30, or 60 seconds.

To share your Slides file on the web, head to your Google Slides homepage , open a presentation, and then click File > Publish to the Web.

Click "File," and then click "Publish to the Web."

Click the drop-down menu in the "Auto-Advance Slides:" section and select the interval at which you want the slides to advance. Click the checkboxes if you want your presentation to start as soon as the player loads and if you want it to restart after the last slide. Click "Publish" after you make your selections.

Click "Publish."

You can then copy the link (Ctrl+C on Windows/Chrome OS or Cmd+C on macOS), embed it on your website, or share it via Gmail, Facebook, or Twitter.

When you want to remove the file from the web, head back to File > Publish to the Web, expand the "Published Content and Settings" menu, and then click "Stop Publishing."

Related: The Beginner's Guide to Google Slides

This section is similar to the Google Docs method. You share from a Docs file, but you can use HTML and some basic CSS to style everything. This enables you to create a pseudo-website without having to buy a domain or hosting.

First, create an HTML file with the code for your website's homepage and save it to your computer.

Next, head to your Google Drive , and then upload the HTML file. You can also drag and drop it directly from your computer into Drive's webpage to upload.

Drag your file from your computer into your Google Drive to upload it.

Right-click the file, and then click Open with > Google Docs.

Click "Open with" and select "Google Docs."

Google Docs opens the file and formats your HTML inside the Docs file. Click File > Publish to the Web, just as you did before.

Click "File," and then select "Publish to the Web."

When you're asked if you're sure you want to publish the file to the web, click "OK."

Once again, you can copy the link (Ctrl+C on Windows/Chrome OS or Cmd+C on macOS), embed it on your website, or share it via Gmail, Facebook, or Twitter.

Note that any changes you make to the Docs file appear immediately on the web page. However, if you want to add more HTML code, you have to edit the original file, and then redo the upload and sharing process.

Additionally, Docs sees any tags as literal text and won't format them correctly.

If you don't want the page to update automatically whenever you make changes, click "Published Content and Settings," and then uncheck the "Automatically Republish When Changes Are Made" box.

While sharing documents, spreadsheets, and presentations from Google Drive works wonderfully, there are a few hang-ups when it comes to publishing HTML files as a web page.

If you use Google Drive to host your website, the amount of functionality and formatting features available are drastically limited when compared to conventional web hosting. It's probably better to use Google Drive only as a basic landing page for personal use.

Prompt engineering overview

 before prompt engineering.

This guide assumes that you have:

  • A clear definition of the success criteria for your use case
  • Some ways to empirically test against those criteria
  • A first draft prompt you want to improve

If not, we highly suggest you spend time establishing that first. Check out Define your success criteria and Create strong empirical evaluations for tips and guidance.

Don’t have a first draft prompt? Try the prompt generator in the Anthropic Console!

 When to prompt engineer

This guide focuses on success criteria that are controllable through prompt engineering. Not every success criteria or failing eval is best solved by prompt engineering. For example, latency and cost can be sometimes more easily improved by selecting a different model.

Prompting vs. finetuning

Prompt engineering is far faster than other methods of model behavior control, such as finetuning, and can often yield leaps in performance in far less time. Here are some reasons to consider prompt engineering over finetuning:

  • Resource efficiency : Fine-tuning requires high-end GPUs and large memory, while prompt engineering only needs text input, making it much more resource-friendly.
  • Cost-effectiveness : For cloud-based AI services, fine-tuning incurs significant costs. Prompt engineering uses the base model, which is typically cheaper.
  • Maintaining model updates : When providers update models, fine-tuned versions might need retraining. Prompts usually work across versions without changes.
  • Time-saving : Fine-tuning can take hours or even days. In contrast, prompt engineering provides nearly instantaneous results, allowing for quick problem-solving.
  • Minimal data needs : Fine-tuning needs substantial task-specific, labeled data, which can be scarce or expensive. Prompt engineering works with few-shot or even zero-shot learning.
  • Flexibility & rapid iteration : Quickly try various approaches, tweak prompts, and see immediate results. This rapid experimentation is difficult with fine-tuning.
  • Domain adaptation : Easily adapt models to new domains by providing domain-specific context in prompts, without retraining.
  • Comprehension improvements : Prompt engineering is far more effective than finetuning at helping models better understand and utilize external content such as retrieved documents
  • Preserves general knowledge : Fine-tuning risks catastrophic forgetting, where the model loses general knowledge. Prompt engineering maintains the model’s broad capabilities.
  • Transparency : Prompts are human-readable, showing exactly what information the model receives. This transparency aids in understanding and debugging.

 How to prompt engineer

The prompt engineering pages in this section have been organized from most broadly effective techniques to more specialized techniques. When troubleshooting performance, we suggest you try these techniques in order, although the actual impact of each technique will depend on our use case.

What are Chrome flags?

Activate additional debugging tools, or try out new or experimental features.

Sam Dutton

Chrome flags are a way to activate browser features that are not available by default.

For example, Chrome wanted to allow users to try picture-in-picture video features, before rolling it out to everyone.

google docs web presentation

The feature was made available behind a flag, so any user could try it out and give feedback. The code and design were tested and polished based on the feedback, so now you can use picture-in-picture by default in Chrome—and it works really well.

Understand the risks

Most Chrome users will never need to use Chrome flags .

If you do set Chrome flags, you need to be careful. By activating or deactivating features, you could lose data or compromise your security or privacy—and features you toggle with a flag may stop working or be removed without notice.

If you're an enterprise IT administrator, you shouldn't use Chrome flags in production. You might want to take a look at enterprise policies instead.

...and proceed with caution

Having said all that, if you're a web developer who needs to try out new technology—or just a curious geek—then getting to know Chrome flags can be really worthwhile.

There are a large number of flags for many different types of features. Some flags affect the way Chrome looks or works, and some activate features such as new JavaScript APIs. The availability of flags depends on which version of Chrome you're running.

There are two ways to set Chrome flags:

  • From the chrome://flags page.
  • By opening Chrome from the command line in a terminal.

chrome://flags

To set a flag from the chrome://flags page in Chrome, you need to find the flag, toggle the setting for the flag, then relaunch the browser. For example, to activate Chrome's heads-up display for performance metrics:

google docs web presentation

Now you can use the heads-up display that shows technical information about web page performance.

google docs web presentation

Command-line flags

If you're a web developer, you may want to set flags by opening Chrome from the command line in a terminal. You run the command to open Chrome, and add the flags you want to set. There are a lot more Chrome settings you can configure from the command line than those available from the chrome://flags page.

For example, to run Chrome Canary from a terminal on a Mac, with the Topics API activated and epoch length set to 15 seconds, use the following command:

That's just one example! There are hundreds of other flags for activating, deactivating and configuring less well-known features.

If you regularly use different Chrome channels with command-line flags, you might want to create a function for each channel, and add these to your shell RC file. For example, on macOS:

  • Open a terminal.
  • Create a function: cf(){ open -a 'Google Chrome Canary' --args $*; }
  • Use the function: cf --enable-features=TrackingProtection3pcd

Set the Chrome user data directory

In Chrome engineering language, Chrome user refers to an "individual human user of Chrome".

A Chrome client refers to an individual installation of Chrome on a device.

More precisely, a Chrome client corresponds to an individual user data directory . Each Chrome profile is stored in a subdirectory within the user data directory.

If you run Chrome from the command line, you can set the user data directory with the --user-data-dir flag .

That means you can have a separate user data directory for development, with its own profile subdirectories. Creating a new user data directory makes Chrome behave as if it had been freshly installed, which can be helpful for debugging profile-related issues.

To run Chrome from the command line with a new temporary user directory, use the following flag:

You might also want to add the following flags to avoid the browser check and first run UI:

Beware of flag conflicts

It's possible that the flags you set could conflict with each other. chrome://flags settings override command-line settings for the same flag, and the defaults for a chrome://flags setting might, in some cases, override your command line configurations. If the flags you set running Chrome from the command line don't work as expected, you should check your chrome://flags page.

Note that the settings shown on the chrome://flags page don't reflect flags set from the command line. Instead, take a look at the chrome://version page. The Command Line section shows flag settings.

google docs web presentation

Two other ways to try out experimental features

You can enable a range of experimental features that don't have their own flag, by toggling the chrome://flags#enable-experimental-web-platform-features flag. Documentation for new features will explain when this is an option.

In Chrome Beta you can try out featured experiments and give feedback, by toggling Experiment settings and relaunching the browser. Test experimental features in Chrome provides more detail.

Screenshot of Experiments UI in Chrome Beta, showing Tab scrolling options.

Which features get a flag?

Not all experimental features get their own Chrome flag:

  • Some features only become available when they ship in Chrome Canary, and can't be activated by a flag before that. This is quite rare.
  • For 'smaller' features that require no more than 1–2 quarters of work, experimental availability is provided by enabling the following flag: chrome://flags#enable-experimental-web-platform-features This activates multiple minor features.
  • Major features are made available for experimentation with flags specific to the feature, using chrome://flags or command line switches.

What about Chrome settings?

Chrome settings and Chrome flags serve different purposes.

Chrome flags enable the user to activate or deactivate experimental features, whereas the controls available from the chrome://settings page allow the user to customize their experience for features that are available by default.

What about origin trials?

Origin trials are a way for developers to test a new or experimental web platform feature at scale, and give feedback to the web standards community before the feature is made available to all users.

Features undergoing an origin trial are activated on all pages that provide a valid token for that trial. This allows website owners to activate an experimental feature for all their users, without requiring users to change browser settings or set flags. By comparison, Chrome flags allow individual users to activate or deactivate an experimental feature, on all websites they visit. Getting started with Chrome's origin trials provides more detail.

Docker overview

Docker is an open platform for developing, shipping, and running applications. Docker enables you to separate your applications from your infrastructure so you can deliver software quickly. With Docker, you can manage your infrastructure in the same ways you manage your applications. By taking advantage of Docker's methodologies for shipping, testing, and deploying code, you can significantly reduce the delay between writing code and running it in production.

The Docker platform

Docker provides the ability to package and run an application in a loosely isolated environment called a container. The isolation and security lets you run many containers simultaneously on a given host. Containers are lightweight and contain everything needed to run the application, so you don't need to rely on what's installed on the host. You can share containers while you work, and be sure that everyone you share with gets the same container that works in the same way.

Docker provides tooling and a platform to manage the lifecycle of your containers:

  • Develop your application and its supporting components using containers.
  • The container becomes the unit for distributing and testing your application.
  • When you're ready, deploy your application into your production environment, as a container or an orchestrated service. This works the same whether your production environment is a local data center, a cloud provider, or a hybrid of the two.

What can I use Docker for?

Fast, consistent delivery of your applications.

Docker streamlines the development lifecycle by allowing developers to work in standardized environments using local containers which provide your applications and services. Containers are great for continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) workflows.

Consider the following example scenario:

  • Your developers write code locally and share their work with their colleagues using Docker containers.
  • They use Docker to push their applications into a test environment and run automated and manual tests.
  • When developers find bugs, they can fix them in the development environment and redeploy them to the test environment for testing and validation.
  • When testing is complete, getting the fix to the customer is as simple as pushing the updated image to the production environment.

Responsive deployment and scaling

Docker's container-based platform allows for highly portable workloads. Docker containers can run on a developer's local laptop, on physical or virtual machines in a data center, on cloud providers, or in a mixture of environments.

Docker's portability and lightweight nature also make it easy to dynamically manage workloads, scaling up or tearing down applications and services as business needs dictate, in near real time.

Running more workloads on the same hardware

Docker is lightweight and fast. It provides a viable, cost-effective alternative to hypervisor-based virtual machines, so you can use more of your server capacity to achieve your business goals. Docker is perfect for high density environments and for small and medium deployments where you need to do more with fewer resources.

Docker architecture

Docker uses a client-server architecture. The Docker client talks to the Docker daemon, which does the heavy lifting of building, running, and distributing your Docker containers. The Docker client and daemon can run on the same system, or you can connect a Docker client to a remote Docker daemon. The Docker client and daemon communicate using a REST API, over UNIX sockets or a network interface. Another Docker client is Docker Compose, that lets you work with applications consisting of a set of containers.

The Docker daemon

The Docker daemon ( dockerd ) listens for Docker API requests and manages Docker objects such as images, containers, networks, and volumes. A daemon can also communicate with other daemons to manage Docker services.

The Docker client

The Docker client ( docker ) is the primary way that many Docker users interact with Docker. When you use commands such as docker run , the client sends these commands to dockerd , which carries them out. The docker command uses the Docker API. The Docker client can communicate with more than one daemon.

Docker Desktop

Docker Desktop is an easy-to-install application for your Mac, Windows or Linux environment that enables you to build and share containerized applications and microservices. Docker Desktop includes the Docker daemon ( dockerd ), the Docker client ( docker ), Docker Compose, Docker Content Trust, Kubernetes, and Credential Helper. For more information, see Docker Desktop .

Docker registries

A Docker registry stores Docker images. Docker Hub is a public registry that anyone can use, and Docker looks for images on Docker Hub by default. You can even run your own private registry.

When you use the docker pull or docker run commands, Docker pulls the required images from your configured registry. When you use the docker push command, Docker pushes your image to your configured registry.

Docker objects

When you use Docker, you are creating and using images, containers, networks, volumes, plugins, and other objects. This section is a brief overview of some of those objects.

An image is a read-only template with instructions for creating a Docker container. Often, an image is based on another image, with some additional customization. For example, you may build an image which is based on the ubuntu image, but installs the Apache web server and your application, as well as the configuration details needed to make your application run.

You might create your own images or you might only use those created by others and published in a registry. To build your own image, you create a Dockerfile with a simple syntax for defining the steps needed to create the image and run it. Each instruction in a Dockerfile creates a layer in the image. When you change the Dockerfile and rebuild the image, only those layers which have changed are rebuilt. This is part of what makes images so lightweight, small, and fast, when compared to other virtualization technologies.

A container is a runnable instance of an image. You can create, start, stop, move, or delete a container using the Docker API or CLI. You can connect a container to one or more networks, attach storage to it, or even create a new image based on its current state.

By default, a container is relatively well isolated from other containers and its host machine. You can control how isolated a container's network, storage, or other underlying subsystems are from other containers or from the host machine.

A container is defined by its image as well as any configuration options you provide to it when you create or start it. When a container is removed, any changes to its state that aren't stored in persistent storage disappear.

Example docker run command

The following command runs an ubuntu container, attaches interactively to your local command-line session, and runs /bin/bash .

When you run this command, the following happens (assuming you are using the default registry configuration):

If you don't have the ubuntu image locally, Docker pulls it from your configured registry, as though you had run docker pull ubuntu manually.

Docker creates a new container, as though you had run a docker container create command manually.

Docker allocates a read-write filesystem to the container, as its final layer. This allows a running container to create or modify files and directories in its local filesystem.

Docker creates a network interface to connect the container to the default network, since you didn't specify any networking options. This includes assigning an IP address to the container. By default, containers can connect to external networks using the host machine's network connection.

Docker starts the container and executes /bin/bash . Because the container is running interactively and attached to your terminal (due to the -i and -t flags), you can provide input using your keyboard while Docker logs the output to your terminal.

When you run exit to terminate the /bin/bash command, the container stops but isn't removed. You can start it again or remove it.

The underlying technology

Docker is written in the Go programming language and takes advantage of several features of the Linux kernel to deliver its functionality. Docker uses a technology called namespaces to provide the isolated workspace called the container. When you run a container, Docker creates a set of namespaces for that container.

These namespaces provide a layer of isolation. Each aspect of a container runs in a separate namespace and its access is limited to that namespace.
