Our PhD program seeks to improve the education of engineers through research, project-based learning paradigms and integrated design principles. Through our collaboration with the School of Education and other discipline-based education research groups at CU Boulder, our flexible curriculum blends technical expertise with education outcomes.
The program is designed for students with a background in engineering. As a candidate you can expect to:
- Conduct and direct research in engineering education.
- Develop, review and critique research designs that study engineering education.
- Learn to effectively teach engineering subjects.
- Design and assess engineering courses.
- Address critical issues facing engineering education.

Structure of the PhD Program
The 60-credit-hour program includes:
- Graduate level technical courses in engineering subjects or computer science (9 credits)
- Education-related courses (12 credits)
- Flexible credits toward either technical courses or education (9 credits)
- Dissertation hours (30 credits)
Admissions Requirements
The application process runs through the CU Graduate School . It requires:
- Unofficial transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended can be provided in the application
- If you receive and offer of admission and confirm your intent to enroll, you will be required to submit official transcripts
- Three letters of reference
- Please limit to 1000 words
- describe why you are choosing to pursue a research-focused doctoral program in engineering education and what has prepared you for this challenge.
- Your academic and research interests, including what motivated you to apply to the Engineering Education program at CU Boulder.
- Your long-term scientific and professional goals and how a PhD in Engineering Education from CU Boulder will help you meet your career goals
- Your research experiences such as publications, theses, research in progress, and other scholarly activities
- How did the experience prepare or motivate you to do research?
- Your personal experiences and contributions to support diversity in your education, service activities, or research experiences. (if not addressed in diversity statement)
- Any relevant information that is not included in the other application components, such as leadership ability, perseverance, and commitment to justice.

- GRE scores are optional
- You need at least a 3.00 undergraduate grade point average or a 3.25 grade point average in graduate coursework

Dr Gabriel Barros dos Santos is Senior Lecturer in Structural Engineering at the School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science at University of Hertfordshire. His research interests are on the investigation of structural behaviour of steel and composite structures and its components through experiments, numerical modelling and probabilistic assessments aiming for efficient, reliable and sustainable structural design guidance. He has academic partnerships with BRE Trust and the Royal Academy of Engineering . He actively participates in standardization committees and is an active reviewer for high impact academic journals and for UK research funding agencies. He is interested in collaborating with industry and society in general through specialized advisory works and/or contributing to the design and product development of innovative and sustainable structural engineering solutions.
He leads several undergraduate (BEng) and postgraduate (MEng/MSc) modules in structural analysis and design including Structural Design for Fire Safety (MSc) and Design of Steel and Composite Structures (MSc). Gabriel is external examiner for UK Universities and academic franchises abroad. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA). Prior to join Hertfordshire, Gabriel developed new design recommendations for stainless steel members under concentrated transverse loading. These recommendations, which are considered in the next revision of the European Standards, were validated against extensive structural member tests, comprehensive parametric finite element analyses and reliability assessments.
Prior to academia, Gabriel acquired industry experience as structural engineer in the design of offshore structures such as modules of FPSO’s (Floating Production Storage and Offloading vessels), particularly the analysis and design for transport, load-out, lifting and fatigue loading scenarios. Gabriel has been awarded “Highly Commended Graduate Teaching Assistant” at Civil Engineering department at Imperial College.

University of Hertfordshire’s new, £100m, state-of-the-art, School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science opens
The University of Hertfordshire’s new state-of-the-art, School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science – known as Spectra – has opened to students and staff this week.
Bringing together the University’s physics, engineering and computer science departments, facilities, equipment and knowledge into one place for the first time, the £100m, five-storey building is the largest structure on the University’s College Lane campus following six years of building work.
Kitted out with some of the highest spec equipment available, new facilities include two dedicated physics laboratories; two isolated cyber systems rooms that allow cyber security students to test themselves against cyber-attack; a £2m suite of wind tunnels; a strong floor to help test material strength; new robotics labs and a robot football pitch for developing and testing autonomous robot behaviour; flight simulators that can land in any airport across the world have also been installed, alongside a welding bay and controls testing suite, plus two Caterham lightweight sports cars and a Tesla for use in autonomous vehicle design.
Professor Daniel McCluskey, Dean of Spectra at the University of Hertfordshire, said:
“Spectra has been deliberately designed to provide students with an environment that mirrors the working environments in their future careers. This is to ensure we deliver on the University of Hertfordshire’s mission to provide the highest quality, career-focused education that hugely enhances career prospects and ensures our students graduate both work-ready and able to make an impact in real-world settings.”
The increased range of research, education and training made possible by Spectra will help address crucial skills gaps within the STEM sector – with 35% of UK firms reportedly having difficulties recruiting staff with skills in STEM. It will also advance the University’s capacity to partner with local, regional and national aerospace, engineering, bioscience and other STEM companies to support their needs, and together develop economically viable research and products.
The design of the building, which has been developed to ensure all research and teaching areas are visible throughout, is intended to ensure students and researchers are always aware of what each other are doing. Communal workshops on each floor will allow staff and students from different subjects to collaborate more efficiently together.
“We are confident that the cross-thinking encouraged by Spectra will lead to an increase in postgraduate research and raise the University’s international reputation,” added Professor McCluskey.
