Important Notes:

As a student of Instagram looking to get good grades, it is essential to develop new ideas and experiment with existing Instagram theories – i.e., to add value and interest to your research topic.

Instagram is vast and interrelated to many other academic disciplines like Facebook , Twitter, Snapchat , marketing, and more. That is why creating an Instagram dissertation topic that is particular, sound, and actually solves a practical problem that may be rampant in the field is imperative.

We can’t stress how important it is to develop a logical research topic based on your entire research. There are several significant downfalls to getting your topic wrong; your supervisor may not be interested in working on it, the topic has no academic creditability, the research may not make logical sense, and there is a possibility that the study is not viable.

This impacts your time and efforts in writing your dissertation , as you may end up in the cycle of rejection at the initial stage of the dissertation. That is why we recommend reviewing existing research to develop a topic, taking advice from your supervisor, and even asking for help in this particular stage of your dissertation.

Keeping our advice in mind while developing a research topic will allow you to pick one of the best Instagram dissertation topics that fulfill your requirement of writing a research paper and add to the body of knowledge.

Therefore, it is recommended that when finalizing your dissertation topic, you read recently published literature to identify gaps in the research that you may help fill.

Remember- dissertation topics need to be unique, solve an identified problem, be logical, and be practically implemented. Please look at some of our sample Instagram dissertation topics to get an idea for your own dissertation.

650+ Best Instagram Captions for 2024: Good, Cool, Funny & Cute

Caroline Forsey

Published: May 28, 2024

Like most millennials, I consider myself an Instagram native. I’ve used the platform for both my work and personal life for what feels like a lifetime, and in doing so, I’ve had to come up with thousands of Instagram post captions.

marketer adding the best Instagram captions and quotes to her posts

And, after putting different approaches and trends to the test throughout the years, I have a solid idea of what works and what doesn’t. But more importantly, I understand how difficult it is to write a caption from scratch — one that conveys exactly what you want in a way that compels your audience.

That‘s why I compiled some of the best Instagram captions for every type of brand and post I’ve seen. Whether you want to sound cool, make a funny quip, or come across as cute, you'll find something to use or reference to get your creative juices flowing. But first, let’s go over recent data and how that might factor into the way you create captions.

  • Spot the CEO.
  • “The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” — Nelson Mandela
  • My favorite exercise is a cross between a lunge and a crunch ... I call it lunch.
  • Patience — what you have when there are too many witnesses.
  • Don’t give up on your dreams. Keep sleeping.
  • What's a queen without her king? Historically speaking, more powerful.
  • Be yourself, there’s no one better.
  • The scenic route is always better.

I’ve seen plenty of marketers struggle with their captions. In fact, out of the 697 marketers recently surveyed by HubSpot for our Instagram Engagement Report , 23% stated creating relevant and engaging captions was one of the biggest challenges for their brand.

With that in mind, I turned some of my takeaways from HubSpot’s survey into quick, actionable strategies you should keep in mind while creating captions in 2024. Here’s the breakdown:

Use captions that evoke an emotional response.

Up to 58% of marketers agreed that emotional resonance enhances user engagement, and they even put it above technical aspects like visual editing and effective hashtag use.

A good way to put this to practice is creating unique posts with bright, appealing visuals and short, snappy captions that are unique, relatable, or funny to resonate emotionally with your audience.

Play around with caption length.

HubSpot found captions between 1 and 20 characters were the most engaging. And although the engagement dropped the longer they got after that, the trend reversed the closer posts got to the character limit (2,200).

The takeaway? Either keep it brief and fun, or share what’s been sitting in the depths of your mind, and don’t hold back.

Capitalize on the content Instagram users want to see.

Marketers also agree that content showcasing brand products and services (37%), funny content (34%), and relatable content (28%) are the three top-performing content types in their Instagram marketing strategy.

The key to ensuring that’s the case is taking advantage of elements like captions to infuse your brand’s unique personality into the content. After all, there’s a reason why these are also the most memorable content types for consumers.

Use at least an average of 7 hashtags for your posts.

Hashtags are still important. Marketers surveyed by HubSpot believe that hashtags have a tangible impact on comments (51%), impressions (47%), likes (46%), and shares (32%).

But what’s the right number? Well, 11 or more hashtags perform best, followed closely by posts with four or fewer hashtags. Posts with 6–10 hashtags only performed slightly worse than the previous two, so anything in between is a good compromise if you’re having a hard time finding relevant hashtags for your posts.

Use emojis sparingly.

HubSpot found the sweet spot is 6–10 emojis . That said, posts with zero to five emojis performed similarly in terms of engagement. However, unless the goal of your post is coming across as spammy or chaotic, you want to be careful about your emoji usage.

I recommend erring on the side of caution. I might add an emoji to the occasional post when I believe it’ll make the caption more expressive, but I try not to let them overwhelm my captions.

Leverage image posts to engage users with your captions.

Image posts continue to be the best way to grab your audience’s attention. Marketers agree that when image posts connect, they get the most comments (29%) and a significant amount of likes (28%), which is why they devote up to 67% of their context mix to them.

And that makes sense — it’s one of the easier content types to produce, so I suggest using them frequently as part of your strategy. Just note that doesn’t mean you should ignore video or reels. Although, in most cases, the content in these formats does the talking, you can also enhance their impact with unique captions.

That said, the more posts you craft, the more captions you’ll need. So, without further ado, here are a ton of captions to help inspire your Instagram posting efforts!

Want to write a caption from scratch? I totally get it. If you're anything like me, you take about four minutes to choose a filter for your Instagram photo and about four hours to decide on a caption.

Worst of all, after much creative effort and advice from friends, I'm usually barely able to write a caption that goes beyond, “Had a fun day with friends!” And I’m a writer — go figure.

The point is that writing a good caption is hard. Whether you create one from scratch or choose a pre-written one, it should fulfill a few requirements.

Your caption must be on brand.

An on-brand Instagram caption helps unify your company message.

Whether your Insta page is personal or for your business, your captions should be on brand, or reflect your personality and brand identity.

I think Lisa Vetrone , account director at Scenario Communications, a public relations and communications company, best describes the struggle when she says, “If someone was scrolling through their feed and saw this post without seeing the handle, would they know the caption was coming from YOUR brand?”

Your captions should encapsulate the nature of your Instagram's branding and tone of voice. For example, if your page is based on self-love, you should use captions that are friendly in tone. Use inclusive language to make people feel good when they scroll through your Instagram profile.

Your caption should be simple.

Instagram captions can fit up to 2,200 characters, but you don‘t have to use all of them for your caption to be considered a good one. I also want to keep your audience’s attention enough to read it to finish.

Most of the time, I try to keep my captions clear, short, and simple for easy readability. I often have a few go-to emojis and phrases that will fit on any phone screen.

The exception to this is if you're making posts that champion storytelling or other lengthy formats. Ultimately, it comes down to what your audience is looking for.

Your caption should be memorable.

While your Instagram caption doesn‘t have to be a profound piece of literature, it shouldn’t put your reader to sleep, either. Depending on the type of post you’re sharing, you can make it hilarious, thought-provoking, inspiring, or anything you want it to be.

Here’s one example from HubSpot with the caption “You can’t spell ‘CRM’ without ‘R’” :

Try to use memorable Instagram captions in addition to your pics.

I can’t stress enough how important a good caption is. They can help you generate more engagement and turn your followers into customers.

How to Make Engaging IG Captions

Instagram captions can definitely be used strategically, and in many cases help personal or business pages to increase engagement on the platform — and here’s how.

1. Ask your followers questions.

When I need to increase engagement from my followers, I simply ask them for their opinions, recommendations, or even personal stories to make my page more interactive.

For example, if I were running an Instagram page for fashion, I’d ask my followers to comment under my newest post about their favorite designers, collections, or trends buzzing in the industry.

Try to use memorable Instagram captions in addition to your pics.

Similarly, if I’m promoting a new product or feature, I’ll ask my followers to chime in on what they’d like to see, a problem they need solved or even ask for a product review or testimonial %20on%20how%20my%20business%20has%20positively%20impacted%20them.

2.%20Add%20a%20CTA.

Every%20time%20I%20advertise%20my%20business,%20product,%20or%20free%20resource,%20I%20make%20sure%20to%20add%20a%20clear%20and%20enticing%20call%20to%20action.%20It%20doesn’t%20have%20to%20be%20the%20entire%20IG%20caption.%20Including%20it%20on%20the%20tail%20end%20of%20my%20post’s%20description%20can%20lead%20my%20followers%20from%20simply%20liking%20my%20post%20to%20visiting%20my%20Instagram%20storefront%20or%20website.

When%20it%20comes%20to%20the%20frequency%20of%20these%20CTAs,%20 Lindsey Chastain , founder and CEO at the Writing Detective, recommends only “ having a call to action for a purchase in 20% of captions or no more than once a week” to avoid making your followers feel like you’re only there to sell.

3. Incorporate relevant hashtags.

I can use up to a maximum of 30%20 hashtags on a typical Instagram post, which gives me a lot of possibilities to attract viewers based on my topic, location, industry, product, or service.

However, while you can likely find that many relevant hashtags for a post, I usually don’t use that many. I just choose the ones I find essential or even come up with my own personally branded one.

Use relevant hashtags in your Instagram captions.

Take this example of a collab we did with farbsy. We’ve got six hashtags going, all of which help our audience understand the post better. That gives us a better chance at reaching an audience interested in #workfromhome content who might not be our typical followers.

4. Use AI to your advantage.

HubSpot’s AI Instagram Caption Generator.

I’ve been using AI to help me with my caption writing for a while now. It’s so easy to just type in a prompt, link your account, and watch the magic happen. Whether writing comes naturally to you or not, you can use these tools to help you overcome writer’s block.

I really like how HubSpot’s AI caption generator lets you see a preview of your post first. Plus, it lets me make captions for Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and X (formerly Twitter) simultaneously, meaning I can use one prompt for multiple platforms.

5. Make it authentic.

People are tired of polished, perfect posts. Instead, I’ve found users responding to more natural captions that don’t try to gloss over the reality of the situation.

Take it from Cyrus Mohseni , vice president of strategy and growth at First Team Real Estate, who says, “Ultimately, Instagram is a platform for storytelling — personal journeys will not only grow your following but also build a community around your brand . Always shoot for captions that invite interaction, be it through questions, direct calls to action, or simply creating relatable content.”

For example, we started a series of behind-the-scenes “ Life of a social media manager ” posts in April. The credits roll, showing all the different roles a social media manager has to fill, from content writer to data analyst to customer service rep. But the joke’s on them — our manager has to fill all of those roles.

Relatable, authentic Instagram captions and content tend to connect better with users.

I love this post because we aren’t trying to pretend social media managers have an easy job — quite the opposite. You’ll need to try out a mixture of techniques, but ultimately, they should all align with your brand.

6. Let your pictures do the talking.

At the end of the day, my pictures are the real stars in my Instagram posts. I don’t want my captions to overshadow my images. Take Netflix, for example.

Netflix uses simple Instagram post captions so your attention is drawn to their images instead.

Netflix often posts about upcoming releases and popular shows on Instagram, but they let their images and videos cover most of the info. The above post manages to highlight six different movies, but their caption is simply “frfr 💔.”

Their caption quickly expresses that these shows are great for anyone looking for a sad romantic movie to watch.

Capture the Feeling with an Instagram Caption

I completely agree with the old saying that an image is worth 1,000 words, but a well-written caption doesn’t hurt. These days, your Instagram caption can make just as much of a statement as the image.

For all of the occasions that are worthy of a post to your feed, use one of the quotes from this list and customize it to make it your own. And if you need more help while brainstorming captions for your post, don’t forget you can use HubSpot’s AI Social Media Caption Generator to work on your ideas!

But even the best copywriters get a brain block every now and then, which is why we’ve put together this list of 400+ Instagram caption ideas to get those gears turning and help you pump out high-quality Instagram posts time and time again.

Follow along for a full list of ideas for your Instagram captions—regardless of what your post is about—and tips to help you write unique captions.

  • Seasonal Instagram captions
  • Holiday Instagram captions
  • Playful Instagram captions

Benefits of engaging Instagram captions

A compelling Instagram caption improves your chances of engagement, which is one of the most important factors that the Instagram algorithm assesses when ordering the content in user feeds.

As well as improving engagement, Instagram captions:

  • Add context to your image so you can explain complicated information.
  • Show off your brand’s personality and help followers to understand you.
  • Improve the visibility of your posts with #hashtags
  • Highlight the human side of your business with emoji
  • Encourage action with call to action text.

The key to Instagram captions is understanding your audience and knowing how to connect with them on social media. You’ll need to decide which hashtags are the most useful for your campaigns, how much your customers like in-depth content and whether your followers will respond to emoji. The more you know about your fans, the easier it will be to tailor your captions to their needs.

How to write an Instagram caption

To write good Instagram captions, you must always keep your target audience top of mind. Who are you writing for? How do you want them to feel when they see your post or read your Instagram caption? What actions do you want them to take?

Here are a few more tips for creating Instagram captions that resonate.

A step-by-step process for how to write high-quality Instagram captions

1. Give your audience more context

A picture might say a thousand words, but your Instagram posts need captions to provide more context. Especially when sharing branded content, you need some copy to fully explain the point you’re trying to convey. The best advice for writing captions on Instagram? Front-loading your captions with valuable information. Instagram cuts off what your users see after a few lines of text, so cover the crucial things first.

Use your caption to:

  • Describe to your audience the image you shared
  • Explain why you’re sharing it and why it’s relevant
  • Give your audience an action to take

Most importantly, do so in a way that’s concise and to the point. Which brings me to my next tip.

2. Keep captions short and sweet

Instagram captions can be a maximum of 2,200 characters , which is between 310 and 550 words . However, that doesn’t mean every one of your captions should take up that much space.

In fact, it’s typically better to create a succinct, quick and easy-to-read caption over a large block of text—except for in rare circumstances when that space is needed to fully flesh out an offering, contest , giveaway or promotion. Sometimes, it might be best to only write a one-word Instagram caption.

3. Write several drafts and AB test your Instagram captions

As with most writing, it’s important to write several drafts of a caption before you settle on one you’re satisfied with. Writing, reviewing and editing your content before you publish will improve your chances of spotting any mistakes.

Remember, you can A/B test your captions with different phrases, hashtags, calls-to-action and even different lengths of content. To find out which captions give you the best result, track your metrics with a social media tool like Sprout Social and use your findings to guide your future Instagram captions.

4. Stick to your tone of voice guidelines

Every brand should have standard brand voice guidelines to follow. This helps your marketing team be consistent, not only in every single Instagram caption but also everywhere else including your tweets, Facebook posts, blog content and email newsletters.

5. Incorporate holidays, hashtags, emojis and acronyms

Even for a business, Instagram is still a fun social media platform, so don’t be afraid to let loose a little. Celebrate your followers’ favorite holidays and seasons . Incorporate emojis. Use a bit of slang. Throw in some popular acronyms (i.e., DM, IRL, IMO, FOMO). Of course, always be sure to use Instagram hashtags .

Remember, hashtags in your Instagram caption improve your visibility. However, it’s essential to use the correct number of relevant hashtags. Measure the engagement levels of your audience with different amounts of tags to see what your magic number is.

6. Drive engagement

While someone may “like” your photo just because it’s high-quality or well-designed, as a brand you’re hoping for a bit more than that. Maybe a comment, a follow or—best-case scenario—a purchase or signup.

To further engage your audience, use your caption strategically. Ask a question or tease a new product or feature using some of the examples we shared above.

Guide your customers towards activities that are lucrative for your business. For instance, ask them to tag their friends in the comments to improve your brand reach, or visit the link in your bio .

Figure and Table Captions

Figures and tables must have a caption and should be numbered consecutively. It is imperative that you create the captions for your tables and figures correctly, so you can update your List of Tables and List of Figures easily.

First we are going to create a caption for a figure. There are two ways to access the caption window. First is from the References menu. There is a large button there that says Insert Caption. Position your cursor where you want the caption to appear and click that button. Alternately you can right click on the image and choose Insert Caption from that menu.

In the caption window, choose Figure from the Label box and then enter your caption. Word will automatically give it a number based on how many items of that label are already present in your document. Choose Table if you are captioning a table instead.

dissertation post captions

Type or paste (Ctrl-V) your caption into the Caption field. Click OK. Your caption will appear on the page. Feel free to center it under the figure or table if it isn’t already aligned. Now when you update your List of Figures or List of Tables, your new caption will appear there as a link.

*It is important that the figure or table uses the in-line with text layout option. This prevents the caption from being inserted into a text box. You can use the on-image icon to adjust this by clicking on the Layout Options box that typically appears on the upper right portion of the image.  You can also adjust this option by navigating to the Picture Format --> Arrange --> Wrap Text section of the ribbon menu.

How to Create Other Caption Labels and Lists

The ETD Template can be expanded to have more caption labels and lists. A common reason for doing this is to include a list of schemes within your ETD file. We’ll use schemes as an example, but you could do the same for a list of algorithms, videos, equations or any other list of items that aren’t tables or figures.

1. Paste in the first scheme. Right-click on it and choose Insert Caption from the menu.

2. Choose New Label

3. Type in the name of the new label and click OK .

4. Type or paste (Ctrl-V) your caption text and click OK . Your caption will appear next to the image

After creating a new label, you then will need to create a List (e.g. Schemes) after your table of contents.

  • Move your Preface down a page to create a blank page after your List of Figures, by applying the style of Normal to the Preface heading. Then hit return twice to start a new Line.
  • In the new line you created, type "List of" the name of the label for which you are making the list.
  • Select the text you just typed and choose Preliminary from the Styles pane.
  • Return down one line and get ready to insert the actual list that will be populated with your custom captions.
  • Go to the References Menu and choose Insert Table of Figures.
  • In the resulting window, choose the custom label from the Caption label dropdown. Any labels you create show up here for use in creating the corresponding lists.
  • The custom caption you created earlier now appears. You’ll be able to update this list just like the List of Figures and the Table of Contents, right clicking on the gray bars and choosing Update Field.
  • Be sure to then go back and apply the style Heading to the title line for the Preface.

Adding Caption Descriptions

To include extended caption descriptions, such as copyright permissions, to your caption labels but not have the full line show up in your List of Figures/Tables we have included a style called Caption Description in the ETD Template. It isn't required that you use that style but it will match the Caption style. To create the extended caption description without adding a paragraph return after the original caption, follow these instructions:

If you are using a PC, you can use a style separator. This will allow you to break the text so that only the main part of the caption is shown in the list of figures. To do this, follow these instructions:

  • Cut and paste the part of your caption that you don't want included in your list of figures on the line below your caption
  • Place your cursor after your caption and select "CTRL+ALT+ENTER" (This creates the style separator)
  • Hit the delete key to bring the rest of your caption back on the same line.
  • Use the "Caption Description" style to make the text look like the rest of the caption.
  • Make sure that you can see the hidden characters (command, 8)
  • Place the marker where you want to insert the paragraph break
  • Select only the ¶ that you just made
  • Go to Format> Font, check Hidden
  • Command 8 again, and the entire caption is on a single line.

After each of these be sure to right-click on your List of Figures/Tables and check that the caption description you have just added isn't appearing in the list.

Front and Back Matter

Supplemental material, dissertations comprising previously published works, top ten formatting errors, further questions.

  • Related Contacts and Forms

When preparing the dissertation for submission, students must follow strict formatting requirements. Any deviation from these requirements may lead to rejection of the dissertation and delay in the conferral of the degree.

The language of the dissertation is ordinarily English, although some departments whose subject matter involves foreign languages may accept a dissertation written in a language other than English.

Most dissertations are 100 to 300 pages in length. All dissertations should be divided into appropriate sections, and long dissertations may need chapters, main divisions, and subdivisions.

  • 8½ x 11 inches, unless a musical score is included
  • At least 1 inch for all margins
  • Body of text: double spacing
  • Block quotations, footnotes, and bibliographies: single spacing within each entry but double spacing between each entry
  • Table of contents, list of tables, list of figures or illustrations, and lengthy tables: single spacing may be used

Fonts and Point Size

Use 10-12 point size. Fonts must be embedded in the PDF file to ensure all characters display correctly.

Recommended Fonts

If you are unsure whether your chosen font will display correctly, use one of the following fonts:

If fonts are not embedded, non-English characters may not appear as intended. Fonts embedded improperly will be published to DASH as-is. It is the student’s responsibility to make sure that fonts are embedded properly prior to submission.

Instructions for Embedding Fonts

To embed your fonts in recent versions of Word, follow these instructions from Microsoft:

  • Click the File tab and then click Options .
  • In the left column, select the Save tab.
  • Clear the Do not embed common system fonts check box.

For reference, below are some instructions from ProQuest UMI for embedding fonts in older file formats:

To embed your fonts in Microsoft Word 2010:

  • In the File pull-down menu click on Options .
  • Choose Save on the left sidebar.
  • Check the box next to Embed fonts in the file.
  • Click the OK button.
  • Save the document.

Note that when saving as a PDF, make sure to go to “more options” and save as “PDF/A compliant”

To embed your fonts in Microsoft Word 2007:

  • Click the circular Office button in the upper left corner of Microsoft Word.
  • A new window will display. In the bottom right corner select Word Options .
  • Choose Save from the left sidebar.

Using Microsoft Word on a Mac:

Microsoft Word 2008 on a Mac OS X computer will automatically embed your fonts while converting your document to a PDF file.

If you are converting to PDF using Acrobat Professional (instructions courtesy of the Graduate Thesis Office at Iowa State University):

  • Open your document in Microsoft Word.
  • Click on the Adobe PDF tab at the top. Select "Change Conversion Settings."
  • Click on Advanced Settings.
  • Click on the Fonts folder on the left side of the new window. In the lower box on the right, delete any fonts that appear in the "Never Embed" box. Then click "OK."
  • If prompted to save these new settings, save them as "Embed all fonts."
  • Now the Change Conversion Settings window should show "embed all fonts" in the Conversion Settings drop-down list and it should be selected. Click "OK" again.
  • Click on the Adobe PDF link at the top again. This time select Convert to Adobe PDF. Depending on the size of your document and the speed of your computer, this process can take 1-15 minutes.
  • After your document is converted, select the "File" tab at the top of the page. Then select "Document Properties."
  • Click on the "Fonts" tab. Carefully check all of your fonts. They should all show "(Embedded Subset)" after the font name.
  •  If you see "(Embedded Subset)" after all fonts, you have succeeded.

The font used in the body of the text must also be used in headers, page numbers, and footnotes. Exceptions are made only for tables and figures created with different software and inserted into the document.

Tables and figures must be placed as close as possible to their first mention in the text. They may be placed on a page with no text above or below, or they may be placed directly into the text. If a table or a figure is alone on a page (with no narrative), it should be centered within the margins on the page. Tables may take up more than one page as long as they obey all rules about margins. Tables and figures referred to in the text may not be placed at the end of the chapter or at the end of the dissertation.

  • Given the standards of the discipline, dissertations in the Department of History of Art and Architecture and the Department of Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Urban Planning often place illustrations at the end of the dissertation.

Figure and table numbering must be continuous throughout the dissertation or by chapter (e.g., 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2, etc.). Two figures or tables cannot be designated with the same number. If you have repeating images that you need to cite more than once, label them with their number and A, B, etc.

Headings should be placed at the top of tables. While no specific rules for the format of table headings and figure captions are required, a consistent format must be used throughout the dissertation (contact your department for style manuals appropriate to the field).

Captions should appear at the bottom of any figures. If the figure takes up the entire page, the caption should be placed alone on the preceding page, centered vertically and horizontally within the margins.

Each page receives a separate page number. When a figure or table title is on a preceding page, the second and subsequent pages of the figure or table should say, for example, “Figure 5 (Continued).” In such an instance, the list of figures or tables will list the page number containing the title. The word “figure” should be written in full (not abbreviated), and the “F” should be capitalized (e.g., Figure 5). In instances where the caption continues on a second page, the “(Continued)” notation should appear on the second and any subsequent page. The figure/table and the caption are viewed as one entity and the numbering should show correlation between all pages. Each page must include a header.

Landscape orientation figures and tables must be positioned correctly and bound at the top so that the top of the figure or table will be at the left margin. Figure and table headings/captions are placed with the same orientation as the figure or table when on the same page. When on a separate page, headings/captions are always placed in portrait orientation, regardless of the orientation of the figure or table. Page numbers are always placed as if the figure were vertical on the page.

If a graphic artist does the figures, Harvard Griffin GSAS will accept lettering done by the artist only within the figure. Figures done with software are acceptable if the figures are clear and legible. Legends and titles done by the same process as the figures will be accepted if they too are clear, legible, and run at least 10 or 12 characters per inch. Otherwise, legends and captions should be printed with the same font used in the text.

Original illustrations, photographs, and fine arts prints may be scanned and included, centered between the margins on a page with no text above or below.

Use of Third-Party Content

In addition to the student's own writing, dissertations often contain third-party content or in-copyright content owned by parties other than you, the student who authored the dissertation. The Office for Scholarly Communication recommends consulting the information below about fair use, which allows individuals to use in-copyright content, on a limited basis and for specific purposes, without seeking permission from copyright holders.

Because your dissertation will be made available for online distribution through DASH , Harvard's open-access repository, it is important that any third-party content in it may be made available in this way.

Fair Use and Copyright

What is fair use?

Fair use is a provision in copyright law that allows the use of a certain amount of copyrighted material without seeking permission. Fair use is format- and media-agnostic. This means fair use may apply to images (including photographs, illustrations, and paintings), quoting at length from literature, videos, and music regardless of the format.

How do I determine whether my use of an image or other third-party content in my dissertation is fair use?

There are four factors you will need to consider when making a fair use claim.

1) For what purpose is your work going to be used?

  • Nonprofit, educational, scholarly, or research use favors fair use. Commercial, non-educational uses, often do not favor fair use.
  • A transformative use (repurposing or recontextualizing the in-copyright material) favors fair use. Examining, analyzing, and explicating the material in a meaningful way, so as to enhance a reader's understanding, strengthens your fair use argument. In other words, can you make the point in the thesis without using, for instance, an in-copyright image? Is that image necessary to your dissertation? If not, perhaps, for copyright reasons, you should not include the image.

2) What is the nature of the work to be used?

  • Published, fact-based content favors fair use and includes scholarly analysis in published academic venues.
  • Creative works, including artistic images, are afforded more protection under copyright, and depending on your use in light of the other factors, may be less likely to favor fair use; however, this does not preclude considerations of fair use for creative content altogether.

3) How much of the work is going to be used?

  • Small, or less significant, amounts favor fair use. A good rule of thumb is to use only as much of the in-copyright content as necessary to serve your purpose. Can you use a thumbnail rather than a full-resolution image? Can you use a black-and-white photo instead of color? Can you quote select passages instead of including several pages of the content? These simple changes bolster your fair use of the material.

4) What potential effect on the market for that work may your use have?

  • If there is a market for licensing this exact use or type of educational material, then this weighs against fair use. If however, there would likely be no effect on the potential commercial market, or if it is not possible to obtain permission to use the work, then this favors fair use.

For further assistance with fair use, consult the Office for Scholarly Communication's guide, Fair Use: Made for the Harvard Community and the Office of the General Counsel's Copyright and Fair Use: A Guide for the Harvard Community .

What are my options if I don’t have a strong fair use claim?

Consider the following options if you find you cannot reasonably make a fair use claim for the content you wish to incorporate:

  • Seek permission from the copyright holder.
  • Use openly licensed content as an alternative to the original third-party content you intended to use. Openly-licensed content grants permission up-front for reuse of in-copyright content, provided your use meets the terms of the open license.
  • Use content in the public domain, as this content is not in-copyright and is therefore free of all copyright restrictions. Whereas third-party content is owned by parties other than you, no one owns content in the public domain; everyone, therefore, has the right to use it.

For use of images in your dissertation, please consult this guide to Finding Public Domain & Creative Commons Media , which is a great resource for finding images without copyright restrictions.

Who can help me with questions about copyright and fair use?

Contact your Copyright First Responder . Please note, Copyright First Responders assist with questions concerning copyright and fair use, but do not assist with the process of obtaining permission from copyright holders.

Pages should be assigned a number except for the Dissertation Acceptance Certificate . Preliminary pages (abstract, table of contents, list of tables, graphs, illustrations, and preface) should use small Roman numerals (i, ii, iii, iv, v, etc.). All pages must contain text or images.

Count the title page as page i and the copyright page as page ii, but do not print page numbers on either page .

For the body of text, use Arabic numbers (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc.) starting with page 1 on the first page of text. Page numbers must be centered throughout the manuscript at the top or bottom. Every numbered page must be consecutively ordered, including tables, graphs, illustrations, and bibliography/index (if included); letter suffixes (such as 10a, 10b, etc.) are not allowed. It is customary not to have a page number on the page containing a chapter heading.

  • Check pagination carefully. Account for all pages.

A copy of the Dissertation Acceptance Certificate (DAC) should appear as the first page. This page should not be counted or numbered. The DAC will appear in the online version of the published dissertation. The author name and date on the DAC and title page should be the same.

The dissertation begins with the title page; the title should be as concise as possible and should provide an accurate description of the dissertation. The author name and date on the DAC and title page should be the same.

  • Do not print a page number on the title page. It is understood to be page  i  for counting purposes only.

A copyright notice should appear on a separate page immediately following the title page and include the copyright symbol ©, the year of first publication of the work, and the name of the author:

© [ year ] [ Author’s Name ] All rights reserved.

Alternatively, students may choose to license their work openly under a  Creative Commons  license. The author remains the copyright holder while at the same time granting up-front permission to others to read, share, and (depending on the license) adapt the work, so long as proper attribution is given. (By default, under copyright law, the author reserves all rights; under a Creative Commons license, the author reserves some rights.)

  • Do  not  print a page number on the copyright page. It is understood to be page  ii  for counting purposes only.

An abstract, numbered as page  iii , should immediately follow the copyright page and should state the problem, describe the methods and procedures used, and give the main results or conclusions of the research. The abstract will appear in the online and bound versions of the dissertation and will be published by ProQuest. There is no maximum word count for the abstract.

  • double-spaced
  • left-justified
  • indented on the first line of each paragraph
  • The author’s name, right justified
  • The words “Dissertation Advisor:” followed by the advisor’s name, left-justified (a maximum of two advisors is allowed)
  • Title of the dissertation, centered, several lines below author and advisor

Dissertations divided into sections must contain a table of contents that lists, at minimum, the major headings in the following order:

  • Front Matter
  • Body of Text
  • Back Matter

Front matter includes (if applicable):

  • acknowledgements of help or encouragement from individuals or institutions
  • a dedication
  • a list of illustrations or tables
  • a glossary of terms
  • one or more epigraphs.

Back matter includes (if applicable):

  • bibliography
  • supplemental materials, including figures and tables
  • an index (in rare instances).

Supplemental figures and tables must be placed at the end of the dissertation in an appendix, not within or at the end of a chapter. If additional digital information (including audio, video, image, or datasets) will accompany the main body of the dissertation, it should be uploaded as a supplemental file through ProQuest ETD . Supplemental material will be available in DASH and ProQuest and preserved digitally in the Harvard University Archives.

As a matter of copyright, dissertations comprising the student's previously published works must be authorized for distribution from DASH. The guidelines in this section pertain to any previously published material that requires permission from publishers or other rightsholders before it may be distributed from DASH. Please note:

  • Authors whose publishing agreements grant the publisher exclusive rights to display, distribute, and create derivative works will need to seek the publisher's permission for nonexclusive use of the underlying works before the dissertation may be distributed from DASH.
  • Authors whose publishing agreements indicate the authors have retained the relevant nonexclusive rights to the original materials for display, distribution, and the creation of derivative works may distribute the dissertation as a whole from DASH without need for further permissions.

It is recommended that authors consult their publishing agreements directly to determine whether and to what extent they may have transferred exclusive rights under copyright. The Office for Scholarly Communication (OSC) is available to help the author determine whether she has retained the necessary rights or requires permission. Please note, however, the Office of Scholarly Communication is not able to assist with the permissions process itself.

  • Missing Dissertation Acceptance Certificate.  The first page of the PDF dissertation file should be a scanned copy of the Dissertation Acceptance Certificate (DAC). This page should not be counted or numbered as a part of the dissertation pagination.
  • Conflicts Between the DAC and the Title Page.  The DAC and the dissertation title page must match exactly, meaning that the author name and the title on the title page must match that on the DAC. If you use your full middle name or just an initial on one document, it must be the same on the other document.
  • Abstract Formatting Errors. The advisor name should be left-justified, and the author's name should be right-justified. Up to two advisor names are allowed. The Abstract should be double spaced and include the page title “Abstract,” as well as the page number “iii.” There is no maximum word count for the abstract.
  •  The front matter should be numbered using Roman numerals (iii, iv, v, …). The title page and the copyright page should be counted but not numbered. The first printed page number should appear on the Abstract page (iii).
  • The body of the dissertation should be numbered using Arabic numbers (1, 2, 3, …). The first page of the body of the text should begin with page 1. Pagination may not continue from the front matter.
  • All page numbers should be centered either at the top or the bottom of the page.
  • Figures and tables Figures and tables must be placed within the text, as close to their first mention as possible. Figures and tables that span more than one page must be labeled on each page. Any second and subsequent page of the figure/table must include the “(Continued)” notation. This applies to figure captions as well as images. Each page of a figure/table must be accounted for and appropriately labeled. All figures/tables must have a unique number. They may not repeat within the dissertation.
  • Any figures/tables placed in a horizontal orientation must be placed with the top of the figure/ table on the left-hand side. The top of the figure/table should be aligned with the spine of the dissertation when it is bound.
  • Page numbers must be placed in the same location on all pages of the dissertation, centered, at the bottom or top of the page. Page numbers may not appear under the table/ figure.
  • Supplemental Figures and Tables. Supplemental figures and tables must be placed at the back of the dissertation in an appendix. They should not be placed at the back of the chapter.
  • Permission Letters Copyright. permission letters must be uploaded as a supplemental file, titled ‘do_not_publish_permission_letters,” within the dissertation submission tool.
  •  DAC Attachment. The signed Dissertation Acceptance Certificate must additionally be uploaded as a document in the "Administrative Documents" section when submitting in Proquest ETD . Dissertation submission is not complete until all documents have been received and accepted.
  • Overall Formatting. The entire document should be checked after all revisions, and before submitting online, to spot any inconsistencies or PDF conversion glitches.
  • You can view dissertations successfully published from your department in DASH . This is a great place to check for specific formatting and area-specific conventions.

Inserting Captions

Word can automatically number the captions of your tables, figures and equations. The format of those captions is controlled by the Caption Style, and later in this section we describe how to modify that style to match the formatting requirements of your particular Style Guide (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc...).

The following video will show you how to insert objects such as pictures (figures) and charts. At the 1:40 point of the video, it discusses how to add captions to those objects. Despite the references to Word 2010, the information is still accurate.

To add a caption to a figure, table, or other object:

dissertation post captions

  • In the window that appears, select the label that applies to the object you have selected (e.g. “Figure” or “Table”) and select the position of the caption (above or below the object). You can click the "New Label..." button if you wish to create a different label (such as "Maps" or "Appendix Figures")
  • Type your text in the Caption: field. This field has a 250-character limit, so if your caption is longer than that, you should instead add it after you've inserted the caption – Step 6)
  • Click the Numbering… button and check the Include Chapter Number box. Double-check to make sure it's getting the chapter number from Heading 1.
  • Select the separator (hyphen, comma, etc...) you wish to have between your chapter number and the caption number and click OK .
  • Click OK to exit the dialog box.
  • If you waited to enter a long caption, now you can type it in.

Word will renumber your captions appropriately if you insert a new figure before other figures in your document.

All the captions in your document are styled with the  Caption  style, and that may not match what your Style Guide (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc...) calls for. If you do not like the appearance/formatting of your caption text, do not edit them one-by-one, but modify the Caption style instead (see Modifying a Style for more details). Word's default Caption style, for example, sets the captions to be a slate blue color, which you would likely prefer to be black. Also note that if you want your label & number to be Bold and the caption text to be Regular (e.g. " Figure 2.1:  This is my caption"), then you will have to leave the Caption style set to Regular and then manually format the label & number as Bold yourself -- Word can't mix font settings within a caption, unfortunately.

Putting your caption on a line below the Table/Figure number

If your caption has to be on a different line from the figure number (as the APA7 style calls for), don't insert a Return/Enter character after the figure number.  That breaks your caption onto a new paragrph. Instead, use a Soft Return (or two) to move the caption text to another line. This keeps the caption number and caption text as one paragraph, so that Word will still pull the caption text into the List of Tables/Figures.

List of Figures/Tables/Equations

At some point after you've added a number of Figure or Table captions, you'll need to add a List of Figures or List of Tables to your frontmatter. Please refer to the List of Figures/Tables section of this Guide to learn how to create those.

Long Captions in the List of Figures/Tables

In some disciplines, it’s not uncommon for many of your captions to be quite long. By default, the List of Figures/Tables tool will pull in the entire caption, making your List many pages long. Rackham doesn’t care how long your Lists are (we've seen Lists of Figures as long as 30 pages, due to those long captions!), but nevertheless, it may make sense to trim down excessive captions in the List.

How you do this depends on whether your computer is a Mac or a Windows machine.  In both cases, we’ll insert a character between the part of the long caption we want to have in the List of Figures and the part we don’t.

First, we’ll set Word to hide “hidden text” when showing “non-printing characters”.

Click OK or close the window to continue.

dissertation post captions

Next, we’ll place a hidden paragraph character between the part of the caption you wish to include in the List of Figures and the part you don’t:

  • In your caption, place your cursor just before the text you don’t wish to have in your List of Figures.
  • Press Enter  or Return  on the keyboard, to put the text on a new paragraph
  • Carefully click and drag to select/highlight that new paragraph character you just inserted
  • (Mac) From the Format menu, select Font…   (Win) Right-click on the selected paragraph character and choose  Font...
  • In the window that appears, check the Hidden  checkbox

Now try toggling the invisibles off and on.  The caption will display as two separate paragraphs while the invisible characters are visible but will appear as a single paragraph when they're hidden. More importantly, the second paragraph will no longer be included when you generate or update your List of Figures.

There are 8 warning signs of a stock market bubble and 6 of them have already flashed, UBS says

  • UBS strategists say six out of eight signs of a stock market bubble are already flashing.
  • Generative AI hype has driven stock prices to record highs, raising bubble fears.
  • Current conditions mirror 1997, not 1999, suggesting a bubble could soon form.

Insider Today

There's been a lot of talk about the stock market being in a bubble over the past year as hype for generative artificial intelligence drives stock prices to record highs.

In a recent note from UBS, strategist Andrew Garthwaite outlined the eight warning signs of a stock market bubble — and according to Garthwaite, six of them are already flashing.

That means the stock market isn't in a bubble yet, but could be soon.

"The upside risk is that we end up in a bubble. If we are in such a situation, then we believe it is similar to 1997 not 1999," Garthwaite said.

That's important because stock market bubbles often lead to a painful 80% decline once it pops, but Garthwaite says we're not there just yet.

"We only invest for the bubble thesis if we are in 1997 not 1999 (which we think we are)," Garthwaite said.

These are the eight stock market bubble warning signs, according to Garthwaite.

1. The end of a structural bull market - Flashed

"Bubbles tend to occur when historical equity returns have been very high relative to bond returns and thus investors extrapolate historical returns to be predictors of future returns - when in fact future returns, as shown by the ERP, are significantly below their norms," Garthwaite said.

2. When profits are under pressure - Flashed

While S&P 500 profits have been booming over the past year, there is another measure of corporate profits that should be monitored by investors.

NIPA profits measure the profitability of all corporations, including private companies, and when those diverge with the profits of publicly traded companies, investors should take notice.

"We can see this if we look at the TMT period when the NIPA profits fell while stock market profits rose. The same was true in Japan in the late 1980s," Garthwaite said.

3. Large loss of breadth - Flashed

When the stock market is extremely concentrated in a handful of companies that are driving the bulk of the gains, that's a sign that breadth is weak.

With record concentration in the mega-cap tech stocks, that is exactly what has been happening as the median stock fails to deliver strong returns.

"We can see this in particular if we look at the advance to decline line versus the S&P 500 during the TMT period," Garthwaite said.

4. Needs a 25-year gap from the prior bubble - Flashed

"This enables a whole set of investors to believe 'it is different this time around' and develop theories that equities should be on a structurally lower ERP," Garthwaite said.

5. Has a 25-year gap from prior bubble - Flashed

"This narrative either revolves around dominance or more typically technology. In the 19th century there was a bubble associated with railways and in the 20th century there was a bubble in the run-up to 1929 which was associated with the mass production of cars, electrification of cities and the radio," Garthwaite said.

6. Retail starts to participate aggressively - Flashed

When retail investors aggressively buy into the stock market, it allows the equity risk premium to fall to very low levels, leading to sky-high valuations.

"There is some evidence of this such as the bull/bear ratio of individual investors being very high relative to its norm," Garthwaite said.

7. Monetary policy being too loose - Hasn't flashed

Previous bubbles occurred when real interest rates were allowed to fall in a big way. That hasn't happened yet, as the Federal Reserve has yet to cut interest rates.

"Current monetary conditions look abnormally tight versus the output gap," Garthwaite said.

8. Extended period of limited declines - Hasn't flashed

Previous stock market bubbles saw a multi-year period of limited sell-offs of less than 20%.

With the S&P 500 experiencing a painful bear market in 2022 and selling off more than 25% at its low, there could be a long way to go before this condition is met.

Lorde at the GQ Men of the Year Party 2023 at Bar Marmont on November 16, 2023 in Los Angeles, California

Could Lorde 's next album era be coming soon?

On Tuesday, June 4, the pop star, 27, shared an Instagram carousel with a cryptic caption that appeared to allude to her next album era.

In the first two images, Lorde can be seen in a black dress leaning over a balcony, while the third features the musician holding a white pill with the world "spit" on it. The fourth photo features an ashtray with gold trinkets atop a stack of coffee table books, the fifth is a black-and-white snap with Lorde poolside with wet hair and the sixth image is a shot of her in a black dress from behind.

"Use the existing tools wherever possible ©𝑳ĿŁု⑷♶ If the tools do not exist you are spiritually obliged to create them © 𝑳ĿŁု⑷♶⚤✬✹❁✰㉗✬✹❁🀥⚭ 𓆝𓃹𓁙," the "Green Light" singer captioned the post.

Featured in the caption are figures like, a copyright symbol, three different Ls, the number four in parentheses and a recycling logo.

Also included are several more Ls, another four, stars, the number 27, plus the infinity symbol, a shark, a rabbit, an Egyptian figure and a tarot card figure.

No further context was provided by Lorde.

In December 2023, the "Ribs" performer shared another now-deleted post that seemed to hint at her next musical era, per Billboard.

"Listening to myself," she captioned a pair of photos, which featured her in striped pajamas staring into the camera and listening to something in headphones

In September 2023, Lorde shared a candid letter  with her subscribers that provided updates on her health and alluded to a split with her rumored boyfriend  Justin Warren .

At the beginning of her vulnerable message , the "Solar Power" hitmaker revealed that she had written another draft of the letter but said that she "didn’t tell the truth" and would instead "type and not look back, and send what comes out."

In the new version of the letter, Lorde shared she was "living with heartbreak again."

“It’s different but the same. I ache all the time, I forget why and then remember," she wrote. "I’m not trying to hide from the pain, I understand now that pain isn’t something to hide from, that there’s actually great beauty in moving with it. But sometimes I’m sick of being with myself.”

Lorde released her last album Solar Power in August 2021.

Will A.I. Be a Creator or a Destroyer of Worlds?

A hand projects into a swirl made up of the colors of the rainbow.

By Thomas B. Edsall

Mr. Edsall contributes a weekly column from Washington, D.C., on politics, demographics and inequality.

The advent of A.I. — artificial intelligence — is spurring curiosity and fear. Will A.I. be a creator or a destroyer of worlds?

In “ Can We Have Pro-Worker A.I. ? Choosing a Path of Machines in Service of Minds,” three economists at M.I.T., Daron Acemoglu , David Autor and Simon Johnson , looked at this epochal innovation last year:

The private sector in the United States is currently pursuing a path for generative A.I. that emphasizes automation and the displacement of labor, along with intrusive workplace surveillance. As a result, disruptions could lead to a potential downward cascade in wage levels, as well as inefficient productivity gains. Before the advent of artificial intelligence, automation was largely limited to blue-collar and office jobs using digital technologies while more complex and better-paying jobs were left untouched because they require flexibility, judgment and common sense.

Now, Acemoglu, Autor and Johnson wrote, A.I. presents a direct threat to those high-skill jobs: “A major focus of A.I. research is to attain human parity in a vast range of cognitive tasks and, more generally, to achieve ‘artificial general intelligence’ that fully mimics and then surpasses capabilities of the human mind.”

The three economists make the case that

There is no guarantee that the transformative capabilities of generative A.I. will be used for the betterment of work or workers. The bias of the tax code, of the private sector generally, and of the technology sector specifically, leans toward automation over augmentation. But there are also potentially powerful A.I.-based tools that can be used to create new tasks, boosting expertise and productivity across a range of skills. To redirect A.I. development onto the human-complementary path requires changes in the direction of technological innovation, as well as in corporate norms and behavior. This needs to be backed up by the right priorities at the federal level and a broader public understanding of the stakes and the available choices. We know this is a tall order.

“Tall” is an understatement.

In an email elaborating on the A.I. paper, Acemoglu contended that artificial intelligence has the potential to improve employment prospects rather than undermine them:

It is quite possible to leverage generative A.I. as an informational tool that enables various different types of workers to get better at their jobs and perform more complex tasks. If we are able to do this, this would help create good, meaningful jobs, with wage growth potential, and may even reduce inequality. Think of a generative A.I. tool that helps electricians get much better at diagnosing complex problems and troubleshoot them effectively.

This, however, “is not where we are heading,” Acemoglu continued:

The preoccupation of the tech industry is still automation and more automation, and the monetization of data via digital ads. To turn generative A.I. pro-worker, we need a major course correction, and this is not something that’s going to happen by itself.

Acemoglu pointed out that unlike the regional trade shock that decimated manufacturing employment after China entered the World Trade Organization in 2001, “The kinds of tasks impacted by A.I. are much more broadly distributed in the population and also across regions.” In other words, A.I. threatens employment at virtually all levels of the economy, including well-paid jobs requiring complex cognitive capabilities.

Four technology specialists — Tyna Eloundou and Pamela Mishkin , both on the staff of OpenAI , with Sam Manning , a research fellow at the Centre for the Governance of A.I., and Daniel Rock at the University of Pennsylvania — provided a detailed case study on the employment effects of artificial intelligence in their 2023 paper, “ GPTs Are GPTs : An Early Look at the Labor Market Impact Potential of Large Language Models.”

“Around 80 percent of the U.S. work force could have at least 10 percent of their work tasks affected by the introduction of large language models,” Eloundou and her co-authors wrote, and “approximately 19 percent of workers may see at least 50 percent of their tasks impacted.”

Large language models have multiple and diverse uses, according to Eloundou and her colleagues, and “can process and produce various forms of sequential data, including assembly language, protein sequences and chess games, extending beyond natural.” In addition, these models “excel in diverse applications like translation, classification, creative writing, and code generation — capabilities that previously demanded specialized, task-specific models developed by expert engineers using domain-specific data.”

Eloundou and her co-authors noted that well-paying, high-skill jobs are most vulnerable to replacement by artificial intelligence, but there are large differences for various occupations:

Our findings indicate that the importance of science and critical thinking skills are strongly negatively associated with exposure [meaning vulnerable to replacement by artificial intelligence], suggesting that occupations requiring these skills are less likely to be impacted by current L.L.M.s. Conversely, programming and writing skills show a strong positive association with exposure, implying that occupations involving these skills are more susceptible to being influenced by L.L.M.s.

Among the occupations Eloundou and her co-authors ranked as most vulnerable are writers and authors, survey researchers, public relations specialists, interpreters and translators, web designers, financial analysts, court reporters, caption writers and tax preparers.

Just as there are those who emphasize the downsides of A.I., there are optimists who focus on the positive side.

In their 2023 paper, “ Machines of Mind : The Case for an A.I.-Powered Productivity Boom,” three economists, Martin Neil Baily of the Brookings Institution, Erik Brynjolfsson of Stanford and Anton Korinek of the University of Virginia, contended:

Large language models such as ChatGPT are emerging as powerful tools that not only make workers more productive but also increase the rate of innovation, laying the foundation for a significant acceleration in economic growth. As a general-purpose technology, A.I. will impact a wide array of industries, prompting investments in new skills, transforming business processes and altering the nature of work.

Baily, Brynjolfsson and Korinek are not wide-eyed idealists.

“If labor can be replaced by machines across a wide range of tasks in the future,” they warned, “we may experience an A.I.-powered growth takeoff at the same time that the value of labor declines. This would present a significant challenge for our society. Moreover, artificial general intelligence may also impose large risks on humanity if not aligned with human objectives.”

These warnings, however, are issued in passing, in contrast to the work of Acemoglu, Autor and Johnson. The core focus of Baily, Brynjolfsson and Korinek is on the tremendous positive promise of artificial intelligence:

The potential of the most recent generation of A.I. systems is illustrated vividly by the viral uptake of ChatGPT, a large language model (LLM) that captured public attention by its ability to generate coherent and contextually appropriate text. This is not an innovation that is languishing in the basement. Its capabilities have already captivated hundreds of millions of users. Other LLMs that were recently rolled out publicly include Google’s Bard and Anthropic’s Claude . But generative A.I. is not limited to text: In recent years, we have also seen generative A.I. systems that can create images, such as Midjourney , Stable Diffusion or DALL-E , and more recently multimodal systems that combine text, images, video, audio and even robotic functions . These technologies are foundation models , which are vast systems based on deep neural networks that have been trained on massive amounts of data and can then be adapted to perform a wide range of different tasks. Because information and knowledge work dominate the U.S. economy, these machines of the mind will dramatically boost overall productivity.

Productivity, Baily and his co-authors went on to say, is “the primary determinant of our long-term prosperity and welfare.” They foresee artificial intelligence generating a virtuous circle, with productivity gains at its center: “If generative A.I. makes cognitive workers on average 30 percent more productive over a decade or two and cognitive work makes up about 60 percent of all value added in the economy, this amounts to an 18 percent increase in aggregate productivity and output.”

In addition, productivity growth will accelerate “innovation and thus future productivity growth. Cognitive workers not only produce current output but also invent new things, engage in discoveries and generate the technological progress that boosts future productivity.”

How does this virtuous circle actually operate? It’s driven by the compounding of small annual gains into large multiyear improvements.

Baily, Brynjolfsson and Korinek observed that “if productivity growth was 2 percent and the cognitive labor that underpins productivity growth is 20 percent more productive, this would raise the growth rate of productivity by 20 percent to 2.4 percent,” a “barely noticeable” change:

But productivity growth compounds. After a decade, the described tiny increase in productivity growth would leave the economy 5 percent larger, and the growth would compound further every year thereafter. What’s more, if the acceleration applied to the growth rate of the growth rate, then, of course, growth would accelerate even more over time.

From a different vantage point, Autor sees the potential of a benefit for the expanded application of artificial intelligence. In his 2024 paper “ Applying A.I. to Rebuild Middle Class Jobs ,” Autor argued:

The unique opportunity that A.I. offers to the labor market is to extend the relevance, reach and value of human expertise. Because of A.I.’s capacity to weave information and rules with acquired experience to support decision-making, it can be applied to enable a larger set of workers possessing complementary knowledge to perform some of the higher-stakes decision-making tasks that are currently arrogated to elite experts, e.g., medical care to doctors, document production to lawyers, software coding to computer engineers and undergraduate education to professors. My thesis is not a forecast but an argument about what is possible: A.I., if used well, can assist with restoring the middle-skill, middle-class heart of the U.S. labor market that has been hollowed out by automation and globalization.

There are fewer empirical data points in the study of the effects of artificial intelligence on the broad field of political competition in comparison with the abundance of statistics and other kinds of information on jobs, economic growth and innovation. As a result, the scholarly analysis of A.I. and politics is a work in progress.

In his 2023 article “ Artificial Intelligence and Democracy : A Conceptual Framework,” Andreas Jungherr , a political scientist at the University of Bamberg in Germany, maintained that “A.I. has begun to touch the very idea and practice of democracy.”

In the competition between democratic and autocratic states, Jungherr argued that artificial intelligence can help authoritarian leaders: “A.I. in autocracies creates an environment of permissive privacy regulation that provides developers and modelers with vast troves of data, allowing them to refine A.I.-enabled models of human behavior.”

Traditionally, Jungherr wrote,

Democracies have been seen to be superior to autocracies due to their superior performance as information aggregators and processors. Free expression, a free press and electorally channeled competition between factions provide democracies with structural mechanisms that surface information about society, the actions of bureaucracies and the impact of policies. In contrast, autocracies restrict information flows by controlling speech, the media and political competition, leaving governments in the dark regarding local situations.

Artificial intelligence, Jungherr suggested, may enable “autocracies to overcome this disadvantage. The clearest example at present is China, which uses large-scale data collection and A.I. to support social planning and control — such as through its Social Credit System .”

Along these lines, artificial intelligence could provide authoritarian leaders access to the needs and views of their constituents, helping “autocracies increase their state capacities through A.I.-assisted governance and planning, increasing the quality of state-provided public services.”

If performed effectively and accurately, improved public services “might provide people living in autocracies with greater cultural, economic and health-related opportunities,” Jungherr wrote, which, in turn, would encourage people to “see these benefits as a worthy trade-off with some individual freedoms, leading to strengthened public support for autocracies and state control.”

In examining the effect of artificial intelligence on politics, especially politics in this country, Bruce Schneier , a fellow at Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society and a lecturer at the Kennedy School , takes speculation to a new level.

In an essay that was published last week, “ How A.I. Will Change Democracy ,” Schneier wrote:

A.I. can engage with voters, conduct polls and fund-raise at a scale that humans cannot — for all sizes of elections. More interestingly, future politicians will largely be A.I.-driven. I don’t mean that A.I. will replace humans as politicians. But as A.I. starts to look and feel more human, our human politicians will start to look and feel more like A.I.

Artificial intelligence, Schneier believes, will shift power from executives — presidents and governors — to Congress and to state legislators:

Right now, laws tend to be general, with details to be worked out by a government agency. A.I. can allow legislators to propose, and then vote on, all of those details. That will change the balance of power between the legislative and the executive branches of government.

And finally, Schneier wrote, taking his case a step further, “A.I. can eliminate the need for politicians.”

The system of representative democracy, he continued, “empowers elected officials to stand in for our collective preferences.” When the issues involved complex trade-offs, “we can only choose one of two — or maybe a few more — candidates to do that for us.”

Artificial intelligence, Schneier asserted, “can change this. We can imagine a personal A.I. directly participating in policy debates on our behalf, along with millions of other personal A.I.s, and coming to a consensus on policy.”

This consensus will be reached, Schneier maintained, by combining the data contained in devices he calls “personal A.I. assistants.”

These “assistants,” according to Schneier, serve

as your advocate with others, and as a butler with you. This requires an intimacy greater than your search engine, email provider, cloud storage system or phone. You’re going to want it with you 24/7, constantly training on everything you do. You will want it to know everything about you, so it can most effectively work on your behalf.

A.I. has revealed unfathomable vistas, as well as ungraspable, unrecognizable vulnerabilities — and the process has only just begun.
