Below we have provided a Cricket Match Essay in English, written in easy and simple words for class 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.

“Cricket to us was more than play; it was a worship in the summer sun.” ~ Edmund Charles Blunden

Two things have made their place in the heart of Indians forever; Shahrukh Khan (The King Khan of Bollywood) and the sport of cricket. In our country, cricket is a religion and players like Sachin Tendulkar are considered as god. This game is enjoyed by small children as well as office going adults. It never fails to amuse us. You can find people playing cricket in world-class stadiums as well as on every corner of a not so well-lit street. You can never know which side the match is going to go as nothing is sure till the last ball is bowled.

I remember being the witness to one such nail-biting finish. I’m sure that all cricket enthusiasts would still remember the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL) Finale; how all of us were glued to our television screens and were just waiting for the clock to show 7:30 pm! But I was one of the very few lucky ones who got a chance to visit the stadium in Hyderabad and watch the roller coaster of a finale in front of my own eyes.

My family and I live in Delhi, but since my father is such a cricket lover, we had made plans in advance to watch the finale. It was going to be held in Chennai initially, but because of some reasons, the venue was shifted to the city of Hyderabad. We purchased the match tickets as soon as they went online. All of the thousands of tickets that were available were sold within a record -breaking time of 2 minutes.

That is a mere 120 seconds, just think about it! But then, this is something that one can expect when the two teams playing head-on against each other were Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. The match was indeed a clash of the Titans. We landed at the Hyderabad airport and checked into our hotel. After taking a short 2- hour nap, we took a cab and set out for the stadium. There was so much traffic. It felt as if every person in the city was going to the stadium.

Our tickets were double-checked at the entry gate, and we then reached our seats. The stadium felt so lively and was full of people cheering and supporting their favourite team. I doubt if even one seat would have been empty! We were waiting for the toss to start while my father went to bring some snacks and cold drinks for my sister and me. Rohit Sharma, the captain of Mumbai Indians, won the toss and elected to bat first. We all were shouting at the top of our voices and just couldn’t wait for even one more second for the match to begin.

The match started and seemed to favour the yellow side. Mumbai Indians lost some of their crucial wickets early in the game including that of their captain for only 15 runs. Bowlers Deepak Chahar and Imran Tahir seemed to give the blue batsmen a tough time. The supporters of Mumbai Indians had suddenly turned very quiet. But then came Kieron Pollard and struck a new hope for his side. He played some brilliant shots that went literally through the roof! The blue side posted a score total of 149 runs for a loss of 8 wickets in 20 overs. It was now time for the lions of Chennai to work magic with their bat.

The batsmen of Chennai Super Kings started quite well and kept the run rate exceptionally high. But as soon as Faf du Plessis lost his wicket, things started going south for the team. No other batsmen except for Shane Watson was able to perform exceedingly well. Even our favourite helicopter shot hitter, Mahendra Singh Dhoni was run out for only two runs. At the last ball, the Chennai side needed only one run to draw the game and two runs to claim the trophy.

If not anything else, the audience was expecting at least a super over. But one should not merely expect something beforehand when a talented bowler like Lasith Malinga stands with the ball in his hand on the other side. Malinga bowled a superb delivery under so much pressure. He bowled an LBW (Leg Before Wicket) and brought the Mumbai Indians to victory.

History of Cricket

The game of cricket goes long back to British times. When it was introduced in India, very few people played this game. The Maharaja of Patiala, Bhupinder Singh brought this game into limelight. He was a great patron of sports. He played cricket and he had his own team. Cricket was his second love after his kingdom. He was the man behind the golden history of cricket due to his passion for the game. His team Patiala XI was the best team during that time and he was the captain of the Indian team. He himself sponsored his teams for the tours to England.

How is Cricket Played?

Cricket is a game played by two teams of eleven players each on a pitch with two sets of three stumps, which are called wickets. The bowler bowls the ball down the pitch to the batsman of the opposing team, who must defend the wickets in front of which he stands. The target of the game is to score as many runs as possible.

Runs are scored by individual players by running on the playing strip (called pitch) between the wickets, or by hitting a ball that flies outside the boundary of the playground or which falls inside the boundary but bounces or rolls outside. When the balls go directly outside the boundary, the batsman scores six runs, and when the ball falls within the boundary but rolls outside then the batsman scores four runs. The opponent team will bowl and field and their objective is to take the wickets for each of the batsmen playing on the pitch.

A batsman can be dismissed in one of several ways: by the bowler hitting the wicket with the ball, which is called, bowled; by a fielder catching the ball hit by the batsman before it touches the ground and it is called caught; by the wicket-keeper or another fielder breaking the stumps while the batsman attempts a run and is therefore out of his ground. This is called stumped or run out. A batsman can also be dismissed if the batsman breaks the wicket with his own bat or body and this is called a hit wicket; by a part of the batsman’s body being hit by a ball that would otherwise have hit the wicket is called leg before the wicket or “lbw”.

A match consists of one or two innings, and each inning ends when the tenth batsman of the batting team is out, when a certain number of overs (an over: a series of six balls bowled) have been played or when the captain of the batting team declares ending the innings voluntarily.

Forms of Cricket

There are three forms of cricket: Test matches, one-day internationals, and T20 internationals.

Test matches are played for five days. To play this game, the players have to excel mentally and physically. This game is played in white tees and trousers. In this game, the players have to play for ninety overs each day.

In one-day internationals, the players play an inning of fifty overs. This kind of cricket is played only for a day. It was introduced in the 1980s.

T20 is the latest format of this game. In a T20 match, they play an inning of only twenty overs. This game is pretty interesting and engaging.

A Short Para on Cricket Match

Cricket is a game between two teams of eleven players. Each team bats once to score as many runs as possible, while the other team bowls to restrict the number of runs scored. Cricket is usually played on a circular or an oval field with a pitch placed in the middle of the field. The pitch has three sticks at each end, known as the wickets. The pitch is 22 yards in length. The bowler bowls from one end of the pitch while the batsman (striker) tries to hit the ball from the other end. There is another batsman (non-striker) waiting at the bowler’s end. The batsman scores the run by hitting the ball. The aim of the bowler is to get the batsman out while giving away the least runs possible. At the same time, the batsmen want to make as many runs as possible. The team which makes the most runs wins.

The popularity of sports in India is largely driven by Cricket. Cricket is a game that has its own unique appeal as it is played within the rules and laws, and it creates the Spirit of the Game among the players. Any action that indicates any abuse or unfair play causes injury to the game itself. Playing a cricket match is a very enjoyable experience which involves a great deal of physical activities.

The Popularity of Cricket in India

Cricket is the most popular sport in India and has a large fan following. Television and media coverage has also contributed to its popularity. One hundred and fifty years ago, the Parsis, who were the first Indian cricketers, had to struggle to find an open space to play a cricket match. Now, the global market is supporting cricket players. Currently, the Indian players are the best paid and are supported with all facilities so they can play the game at their best.

Children from small villages and towns can easily watch cricket matches on television and they imitate their heroes. This has also increased the youth’s love and passion for cricket. That’s why we can see that in every street, children play cricket matches on Sundays. Early exposure to cricket is a great help in the making of a successful player. We never know who will be the next Kapil Dev or Sachin Tendulkar.

Cricket is played between two teams of eleven players each, and the goal of the game is to score more runs than the other team. The game is played on a large oval-shaped field, and each team takes turns batting and fielding. The batting team tries to score runs by hitting the ball and running back and forth between two sets of wickets, while the fielding team tries to prevent the batting team from scoring by catching the ball and getting the batsmen “out.”

One of the unique aspects of cricket is its length. Unlike many other sports, a single match can last several days, and there are even longer format matches, such as test matches, which can last up to five days. This length allows for a lot of strategy and nuance to the game, as players must pace themselves, conserve energy, and think ahead in order to perform at their best.

For example, cricket is often played in all-white attire, a tradition that dates back to the 19th century. Introduction to Cricket

Cricket is a bat-and-ball game that is played between two teams of eleven players each. The game is played on a rectangular field with a pitch in the center. The pitch is where the bowler, who is one of the players from the fielding team, Bowls the ball to the batsman, who is one of the players from the batting team. The object of the game is for the batsman to score runs by hitting the ball with his bat and running to the other end of the pitch. The bowler tries to prevent this by bowling deliveries which are difficult for the batsman to hit or by getting him out. Short Essay on Cricket Match | My Hobby & Favourite Game Cricket

September 22, 2019 by Study Mentor 1 Comment

Cricket is a sport that barely requires an introduction. Being an Indian, it is the one sport that we have constantly heard about while growing up. We all have fond memories of making teams among our friends and playing cricket on the streets.

The whole family would gather around the T.V. when the Indian team would be playing. Everything from our favorite batsman hitting a six, to the anticipation of the last overs, made the whole cricket watching experience enjoyable.

It is a major sport of our country, with the cricketers being treated as no less than celebrities. Every kid could name most if not all of the top 11 players of the cricket team. It is phenomenon that has swept the country since it was first introduced.

India has produced many legends in the game of cricket, considered as among the international bests and greatest.

A Brief History

England was the birthplace of the sport of cricket. The exact year or date of its inception has yet to be documented.

It is speculated that the first reference to the sport of cricket can be traced back to 13th where a document refers to an incident where a game of ‘cricket’ was played. It was earlier observed that cricket was initially a game played only by children.

Then reported adults started playing it as it seemed pretty interesting and exciting. The earliest of cricket matches was played between parishes in a village and teams of unknown number of players.

A newspaper report from the 1600’s, tells of a cricket game of high significance and having 11 players on each side. This is one of the oldest documented instances of a high profile game in cricket history.

Important facts and figures

This  game universally consists of two teams that comprise of 11 members each who play the field. A toss is carried out at the start of the match, to determine which team gets to make the choice between batting and fielding.

A normal match consists of 13 players present on the field. 11 players from the bowling side and 2 players from the batting side.

Substitutes are also present who are used when a player is injured or cannot play. But the limitations are that a substitute cannot bowl, act as captain or Bat. He can only hold the role of a fieldsman.

cricket essay

A size of a field varies with the location and the size of the stadium. There are as such no fixed dimensions for the size and shape of the field but its diameter usually varies between 450 feet (137 m) and 500 feet (150 m).

Cricket is one of the few major sports that do not require its field to be of a constant specified size or predetermined shape. One thing that is mandatory to be maintained is the pitch, rectangular patch in the middle of the cricket field where the batman and bowler interact.

It is predetermined the wickets, a pair of 3 wooden stumps will wooden bails balanced on top of them, be placed 22 yards apart from each other. The Batsman stands on one end and the bowler and the umpire on the other.

Spirit of the Game

We bleed blue! Is a common slogan every Indian knows about? It represents the amount of respect, dedication and passion we have for the sport of cricket.

Great players like, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly , Mahindra Singh Dhoni , Virat Kholi are household names that Indians will not forget for a long, long time. There people so passionate about the game, that never miss their beloved country’s game, even if it means they have to fly abroad for watching it.

We also are very defensive about our cricketers, which lead to disputes and arguments with those who don’t watch cricket.

But the love for the game takes a wrong turn, when fans get unnecessarily heated up over a loss, for example, when the cricketer Yuvraj Singh failed to perform well in a world cup match, which inadvertently lead India losing the match, frenzied fans took to shouting slogans and throwing rocks at the cricketer’s house.

This was a wrong and shameful act from cricket fans, and greatly shunned by people all over the country. Despite how our team performs, or if we win or lose, every Indian is proud of the passion we have for this game.

Short Paragraph on Cricket

Cricket is my favourite game and Sachin Tendulkar is my ideal star. Though I like to play badminton, table tennis, and volleyball too. But they are all secondary for me.

Cricket started first in England. Later this game spread too many other countries of the world, including India , Pakistan , Australia , New Zealand , South Africa , Kenya and Bangladesh .

In a cricket team, there are eleven players. The team has a captain and a vice-captain and a vice-captain. There are two kinds of cricket matches- a test match and a one-day match. In a one day match, each team plays fifty overs.

Each over has six balls and bowler can bowl a maximum of ten overs. The captain, who wins the toss, decides whether his team will bowl first to bat.

Test matches are played for five days. In a test match, both team as; have to play two innings to get the result. But five days are not enough to play two innings. So, most of the test matches end in a draw.

Last Saturday, our school cricket team played a one-day match against the team of Holy cross School. I was member of my school team. Our captain, Mr. Rohit, won the toss and decided to bat first. We made a big score 250 runs. The team Holy cross was all out at the score of 183 runs.

We won the match by 67 runs with a huge margin. Our captain, who is best bowler of our team, bowled out four players and was declared the Man of the Match.

The game of cricket is really exciting and fascinating. It keeps the spectators spell-bound. Those who cannot make it to the stadium enjoy the game on their television set.

I wish I play in an international match of cricket from India one day, or the other.

The match begins with a toss. The winning captain can choose to bat or bowl first. The aim is to score as many runs as possible.

The Excitement

In conclusion, a One Day Cricket Match offers a perfect blend of thrill, strategy, and skill, making it a captivating spectacle.

250 Words Essay on One Day Cricket Match

Introduction to one day cricket.

One Day Cricket, also known as Limited Overs Cricket, is a version of the sport of cricket that is played in a single day. It is a modern adaptation that was introduced to make the game more exciting and viewer-friendly, with each team getting a fixed number of overs, typically 50, to score as many runs as possible.

The Evolution of One Day Cricket

The conception of One Day Cricket dates back to the early 1960s, but it gained prominence in the 1970s. The first-ever One Day International (ODI) match was played in 1971 between England and Australia. Since then, the format has evolved immensely, with innovations like colored clothing, day-night matches, and powerplays adding unique dimensions to the game.

The Strategy behind One Day Cricket

One Day Cricket is not just about power-hitting or aggressive bowling. It requires a blend of patience, strategy, and technical skill. Teams must balance the need to score quickly with the necessity of preserving wickets. Bowlers, on the other hand, need to maintain a tight line and length to restrict scoring, while fielding becomes a crucial aspect of the game.

The Impact of One Day Cricket

One Day Cricket has significantly impacted how the game is played and viewed. It has made cricket more accessible and entertaining for the global audience, leading to the sport’s immense popularity. The format has also influenced player skills, with an increased emphasis on fitness, fielding, and adaptability.

In conclusion, One Day Cricket represents a dynamic and exciting facet of the sport that combines tradition with innovation, providing a thrilling spectacle for audiences worldwide.

500 Words Essay on One Day Cricket Match

One Day International (ODI) cricket, a variant of the sport that has revolutionized the game, is a spectacle of skill, strategy, and endurance. It is an encapsulation of the game’s traditional elements, yet infused with a modern, fast-paced energy that captivates audiences worldwide.

The advent of ODI cricket in the early 1970s marked a significant departure from the traditional five-day Test matches. The change was driven by the desire to make the game more viewer-friendly and commercially viable. The 60-over format was introduced, with each team getting a single innings to score as many runs as possible. This format was later modified to 50 overs per side in the 1980s, which remains the standard today.

Strategy and Tactics

ODI cricket is a unique blend of the patience required in Test cricket and the aggression necessary in T20 cricket. The limited number of overs places a premium on strategic decision-making. Captains must balance the need to score quickly with the risk of losing wickets. The powerplay rules, which restrict the fielding team’s field placements during certain overs, add an extra layer of tactical complexity.

Impact on the Game

The introduction of ODI cricket has had a profound impact on the sport. It has led to the development of innovative batting techniques, aggressive bowling strategies, and dynamic fielding practices. The need to score quickly has resulted in batsmen developing a wider range of shots, while bowlers have had to adapt by learning to vary their pace and line. Fielders, too, have become more athletic and innovative.

Notable Matches and Moments

ODI cricket has provided some of the most memorable moments in the sport’s history. The 1983 World Cup final, where India triumphed over the West Indies against all odds, is a landmark event. Similarly, the thrilling tie between South Africa and Australia in the 1999 World Cup semi-final, and England’s dramatic victory over New Zealand in the 2019 World Cup final, are testament to the nail-biting excitement that ODI cricket can offer.

One Day cricket, with its unique combination of skill, strategy, and time pressure, has transformed the sport of cricket. It has brought the game to a wider audience, spurred innovation, and provided countless memorable moments. As the game continues to evolve, the ODI format remains a vital and vibrant part of the cricketing landscape.

Essay 2 (400 Words) – History of Cricket and Cricket Team

The game of cricket has become increasingly popular since its evolution centuries ago. The game is supposed to be originated in England during the 16th century and has since then spread to other parts of the world making it the second most popular sport after football.

History of Cricket

The earliest documented reference to the cricket was made during a legal case trial at Guildford, Surrey, England on 27 th January 1598.

Contesting over a piece of land, John Derrick, who was a coroner by profession, testified that he used to play cricket on that piece of land with his mates, almost 50 years back. Obviously, he didn’t invent the game and it was probably being played before that time.

Amid all the uncertainty regarding the origin of cricket, one thing is certain that it was originated before 1550, probably played by the children in south-east England.

Initially, during the late 16th-century cricket was played by the children over a piece of land cleared by cattle grazing. In the coming century, it became popular and was now also played by adults.

The earliest known proper match was held at Circa, England in 1611. Evidence is also found to substantiate that in the next 11 years at least 30 matches were played between recognized teams.

With the invention of the newspaper industry, cricket gained more popularity during the 18 th century. Gradually, the players started getting popular and became huge crowd pullers. Today, the popularity of cricket has reached its pinnacle with over 2.5 billion fans throughout the world.

Teams around the World

As of August 2022, there are 108 ICC members including 12 full members and 96 associate members.

All full member nations are qualified to play ODIs (One Day International) and the Twenty20. The 12 full member countries, in the increasing order of their year of membership, are – South Africa (1909), England (1909), Australia (1909), West Indies (1926), New Zealand (1926), India (1926), Pakistan (1952), Sri Lanka (1981), Zimbabwe (1992), Bangladesh (2000), Afghanistan (2017) and Ireland (2017).

Associate members, a group of 96 countries are eligible to play ICC World Cricket League. However, there are certain prerequisites for a country to qualify as an associate member. Firstly it must have at least 16 senior and 16 junior teams and secondly, it must have an access to at least 8 cricket grounds with 4 of them as permanent pitch.

Beginning as a ball and stick game played by the village children in England, some five centuries ago; cricket has progressed immensely in popularity. Though the rules and techniques of the game have evolved over years, the basic form of the game has stood the test of time and remains mostly unaltered.

A Cricket Match Essay

Cricket is a gentleman’s game. It is very popular and enjoyed all over the world. It is my favorite game. I like it very much. I play it and see it being played either on the ground or on T.V sets.

This noble game is full of excitement, thrill, discipline, team-spirit, co-operation, and hard work. Last Friday, we had a very interesting cricket match between India and Pakistan.

Ajay Jadeja was the captain of the Indian team. It was a one-day cricket match and played on Feroz Shah Kotla ground, New Delhi. Both teams were equally good, and the match was evenly poised.

The match began at 9 am with the toss of the Umpire tossed the coin and India won the toss. India decided to bat first. Our openers played good strokes with caution. Pakistan’s opening bowlers were Shoaib Akhtar and Wasim Akram.

Sourav Ganguly hit a couple of boundaries and scored 40 runs before he was caught by the bowler himself in the followthrough. The other opener Ramesh was also out when our score was 70 runs. He made just 20 runs.

He was replaced by captain Ajay Jadeja. He played delightful cricket and sent the ball flashing to all parts of the ground He scored 62 runs off 52 balls. He was caught out by the mid-wicket fielder.

Rahul Dravid played four down and played steadily but a very clever ball deceived him and he was bowled out for 30 runs. The tail-enders played well and India reached a respectable total of 250 runs for 8 wickets in 50 overs.

Then there was lunch. The Pakistan team started well and played positive cricket There was an opening partnership of 80 valuable runs between Shahid Afridi and Saeed Anwar. These 80 runs were made in just 15 overs.

Anwar was out at a respectable score of 50 runs Then came Imam-ul-Haq. He was playing good strokes and hit three consecutive boundaries in an over of Sunil Joshi before he was given LBW out.

It made him disappointed. Thereafter their middle-order batsmen collapsed like ninepins at regular intervals. They were at one stage only 140 runs for 8 wickets. So tight and well balanced was our bowling Kumble took two wickets.

There was great cheer and clapping from the crowd. But the lower-order batsmen of the Pakistan team player steadily, and scored runs fast in twos and ones. The boundary was few and far between.

They took the score to 220 in 46 overs and 5 balls and had lost 7 wickets. There was a lot of excitement and fortunes fluctuated at regular intervals.

But then our medium fasters Srinath and Agarkar did exceedingly well and the rivals were all out for 240 runs in 48-2 overs Indians were overjoyed. Anil Kumble was declared “Man of the Match “for his brilliant spin bowling ard for scoring 20 valuable runs

The CRICKET MATCH ESSAY ( NARRATIVE)

A cricket match that i watched.

Games and sports are a good source of amusement. People have always sought rescue in games and sports to escape dullness and monotony. They provide us a time to forget our worries and get lost in great pleasure.

I am a fan of cricket and hardly miss watching an important match local, national or international.

Last Saturday a one-day cricket match of 50 overs was played between two reputed teams of Kashmir YCC and BCC in Srinagar at Bakshi Stadium. A large number of spectators had come to witness the match.

The match started at 10:00 am. The captain of YCC cricket team won the toss and elected to bat first. The opening pair started confidently but cautiously. They had scored 32 runs when there was a bowling change. The slow bowling with a lot of swing on a green-top wicket proved disastrous for YCC. In his very first over the slow bowler dismissed both the openers. The middle-order could not resist well his in and outswingers. He claimed two more wickets in his first spell. However, the captain played an anchor role and continued to score fearlessly. Though his partners left him at intervals, he managed to bat to the end. He was 85 not out when the last wicket fell at 198, at the end of 48th over.

BCC started at a rather slow pace. However, runs started coming once the opening pair settled well. They scored 50 runs in the first fifteen overs. In the next five overs, they hit 30 runs. Soon after the spinners were brought in, they managed to move the ball and checked the flow of runs. It made the batsmen impatient and they started hitting the ball desperately. They started losing wickets and at one occasion slumped to 125 for seven. They needed 74 runs in the last 14 fourteen overs with only three wickets in hand. The vice-captain showed courage, skill, and aggression. He hit twenty runs in 38th over with 2 sixes and 2 fours. There was a bowling change which again proved disastrous and the hitter was clean bowled. With two wickets in hand BCC still needed 36 runs in 36 balls. In the next two overs, they scored 13 runs. At this stage, the 9th wicket fell.

In the last over they had to score eight runs to win. They scored five runs off the first five balls. Now the last ball had to be bowled –one wicket for YCC and three runs by BCC was the victory target. There was extreme sensation all around. The bowler of YCC team came racing and bowled a ball of 150km speed. It took a lucky edge and crossed the fence giving a brilliant victory to BCC.

Both the teams were given warm applause for their struggle and brilliant performance. I really enjoyed the match very much.

The Very Brief Life of a World-Class Cricket Stadium on Long Island

Built in 100 days for the Cricket World Cup, the stadium will host nine matches before it is dismantled.

A stadium with banners hanging down and a mini-golf course in front.

By David Waldstein

John Norton, a retired police officer from Long Island, sat in a folding chair and watched his grandson’s Little League game in East Meadow on Wednesday. The quiet spot is less than a mile from where one of the biggest sporting events in the world would take place in a few days, but Mr. Norton, like many people in the area, was only vaguely aware of the details.

“I saw the stadium from the street,” Mr. Norton said. “I don’t know the first thing about cricket, but I guess it’s going to be pretty crazy over there.”

The stadium he saw — the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium — seemed to have popped up almost overnight. Now it sits on one edge of the 930-acre Eisenhower Park, a massive — if temporary — cricket stadium that was built in sections, like a giant erector set, over the last 100 days. It will host eight matches of the Men’s T20 World Cup, an international cricket tournament expected to draw the attention of hundreds of millions of viewers worldwide, even if most people in New York seem barely aware of its existence.

Matches will also be held in six Caribbean nations along with Dallas and Lauderhill, Fla. The event officially opens on Saturday in Dallas, where the United States plays Canada. The stadium in East Meadow, which can hold 34,000 spectators, will be inaugurated with an exhibition match on Saturday between India and Bangladesh.

The Indian team arrived in New York this week and practiced at a nearby facility in Hicksville. This was all reported with great fanfare in India, a country dotted with cricket grounds of all sizes.

So why go to all the effort to host the event in a quiet park in suburban Long Island? The aim is to make new fans out of people like Mr. Norton or, ideally, his grandson. The International Cricket Council, which runs the event, estimates there are already 200,000 cricket players in the United States (up from 30,000 players 20 years ago). Geoff Allardice, a former professional cricket player from Australia and the chief executive of the I.C.C., said that even with more than a billion fans, cricket can become more popular globally.

“One of the things we are trying to do is take the game to new markets,” he said. “New York is a big step for our sport.”

The most anticipated match in the group stage is the showdown between India and Pakistan on June 9 at East Meadow. That rivalry, between two of the world’s best cricketing nations, has a bitter history on and off the pitch — like the Red Sox against the Yankees on a much larger scale and fraught with decades of geopolitical tensions. The last time the countries played against each other, at a different World Cup event last year, 323 million viewers watched in India alone, more than twice the audience of the last Super Bowl.

“The Indian cricket team would have to be the most popular international sporting team in the world, in terms of the number of followers,” Mr. Allardice said. “It’s not only the No. 1 sport, but it drives passion like nothing else.”

Besides the new stadium, fans in New York can also watch matches live on a video screen at the Oculus near the World Trade Center. Citi Field, home of the New York Mets, will host a viewing party for the India-Pakistan match on June 9.

The I.C.C. is hoping that this event will do for cricket what the 1994 World Cup did for soccer in the United States: crash the dominance that baseball, basketball, football and hockey once held.

Cricket, which originated in England, has a long history in New York. The Staten Island Cricket Club is set to celebrate its 152nd anniversary in July, and the first international cricket match was played 30 years before that in Manhattan, between the United States and Canada on Sept. 24, 1844 .

A traditional cricket match is a notoriously long affair, so much so that there are tea breaks. Games can last most of the day, and then there are five-day internationals. But about 20 years ago, a new format was invented, called Twenty20, or T20 for short, that limited play to around three hours, and its popularity soared globally.

There have been many leagues and clubs in the United States over the decades; last year saw the inception of Major League Cricket, a professional league. New York’s team won the championship, but it plays its games in Texas for now, while hoping to build a permanent stadium in the New York area.

For the World Cup, the I.C.C. initially proposed installing a venue in Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, a center for New York area cricket. But local opposition, including from cricketers who did not want to lose their playing fields during construction and play, forced the I.C.C. to look elsewhere. It settled on Eisenhower Park in November, and when word reached media outlets in India, some toured the site and discovered a small, scraggly pitch.

“They were appalled,” said Don Lockerbie, the venue development director, who grew up in nearby Stony Brook on Long Island. “They didn’t know what we were going to build here.”

The playing field, with the rectangular pitch in the middle, was fashioned from special grass grown in Florida. The grandstands are borrowed materials most recently used at Las Vegas’s Formula 1 race and professional golf events. After the last match is held at East Meadow on June 12, the stadium will be dismantled, the parts shipped back to Las Vegas and another golf event, and Eisenhower Park will return to normal, but with a world-class cricket pitch left behind.

Mr. Norton wished the cricket teams good luck in the tournament as he watched his grandson play baseball, but said he had no plans to attend.

“I barely get to any Yankee games,” he said.

Victor Mather contributed reporting.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (AP) — Australia’s first Twenty20 World Cup warmup game started in bizarre circumstances Tuesday when the team only had nine players available to take on Namibia, forcing a selector and a coach to take the field.

Two other coaches also had to go on as substitute fielders in a game that the Australians won by seven wickets at Trinidad’s Queen’s Park Oval.

After restricting Namibia to 119-9, Australia scored 123-3 in 10 overs with veteran opener David Warner finishing 54 not out. Warner, 37, is accustomed to being one of the older players on the field at international level.

He had to share the field with four 40-somethings this time.

Chief selector George Bailey, 41, and 46-year-old fielding coach Andre Borovec were on the field in unmarked shirts when the match began to make up the numbers after Australia captain Mitch Marsh won the toss.

The Australians were still without six World Cup squad members who took part in the Indian Premier League, including pace bowlers Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins who played big roles in the final last weekend.

Bailey is a former international cricketer and a noted fielder. Borovec is a former wicketkeeper for Geelong in the Victorian Premier Cricket league.

Later, Cricket Australia reported that Bailey and Borovec were joined by batting coach Brad Hodge, who is 49, and head coach Andrew McDonald, who will turn 43 next week, when Marsh and fast bowler Josh Hazlewood spent time off the field.

Australia will likely also be shorthanded for its second warmup game against West Indies on Thursday at the same venue. None of the ICC warmup matches are recognized as official T20 internationals.

“Obviously, we didn’t have a full quota of players but the guys who played, probably a few of us needed to coming off a big layoff,” Hazlewood, who took two wickets, told the Cricket Australia website. “I know a number of the bowlers were coming off a long break, which is pretty unusual in our system, but it’s good to get out there. Playing is always different to training.”

Earlier Tuesday, two T20 tournament warmup matches in England and Dallas, Texas were washed out.

The T20 World Cup begins on Saturday and is being staged in the United States and the Caribbean.

First impressions of cricket in New York: a commendable start, but a long way to go

  • Sidharth Monga

Despite being an Irish band, U2 have always sounded to me like they have written many a song about the US. And not just the direct lyrics such as "In New York/ Freedom feels like/ Too many choices".

When they sing, in "Walk On", "You're packing a suitcase for a place none of us has been/ A place that has to be believed to be seen", they could well have been talking about the T20 World Cup in the US. While it is coming to a place none of us (or this writer at least) has been, you really have to believe the World Cup is happening here because there is not much that can be seen that tells you there is one on. This is proper new ground for cricket, because even in countries where the sport doesn't enjoy the fanatic craze it does in Asia, it still never gets pushed to the margins.

At least in New York, however, as Bono wrote, there are too many choices for people. The cricket World Cup doesn't have any signage at the airports, not on the subway, not on the Long Island Rail Road, the last of which actually takes you to the venue. Well not exactly to the venue but somewhat close to it. The Nassau County International Cricket Stadium is not exactly a friendly venue if public transport is your thing. It is in a cars-only part of the state of New York. Even if you shell out for a cab, you still have to walk at least a mile because the massive Eisenhower Park, which houses the cricket stadium, is off-limits to visitors' vehicles.

So let's just Walk On. Walk on to the fact that two stadiums - the actual venue and the Met Stadium fan park - in and around New York have already been sold out for the marquee event of this World Cup: the league match between India and Pakistan (though, barring upsets for either side, the match itself will have little bearing on their progress and no bearing on which group they end up in in the next round). If you are being snarky about any of this, the ICC could well point to the heavy viewership subscriptions for the match.

Attracting the affluent Indian and Pakistani diaspora might be the low-hanging fruit, but two days in New York are enough to know it is not really easy to sell a new sport here. There really are too many choices for entertainment. To sell out two stadiums for one match is not a bad start. To involve 20 teams - the biggest World Cup - at a time when some boards want the cricket world to contract is commendable.

As the start of the tournament approaches, you can feel some excitement building. There is a fan park set up at the World Trade Center where they beamed - on a screen that could have been bigger - the inaugural match of the tournament from Dallas. That USA and Canada are playing the first match is a nice touch: if you didn't know already that they played the first international cricket match way back when, you have been living under a rock these last few days.

The ICC ambassador Yuvraj Singh drew a bit of a crowd at the inauguration of the fan park. He paid a touching tribute to the victims of 9/11. He joked about his Punjabi friends in both the teams playing the opening match, unwittingly giving away how far cricket still has to go to be more than primarily a diaspora pastime in the Americas. He revealed he has never been to any India-Pakistan match that he has not played in himself. He channelled his inner Bono when he predicted of the India-Pakistan match: "If we win, we will go crazy; if we lose, we will still go crazy."

Not many hung around to watch the cricket, though. So, no, New York will not go crazy if it doesn't go crazy tonight. Not for cricket at any rate. But in due course, you'd hope it will.
