Orton was born on April 1, 1980 in Knoxville, Tennessee. Son to Elaine and "Cowboy" Bob Orton , he is the eldest of two siblings—Becky and Nathan. Knowing from experience the hardships of life as a professional wrestler , Orton's parents tried to convince him to stay away from wrestling, and his father warned him that life in the ring meant a life on the road, away from family. Orton attended Hazelwood Central High School, where he was an amateur wrestler. After graduating from Hazelwood in 1998, Orton enlisted with the United States Marine Corps. There, he was dishonorably discharged a year later, after going AWOL on two separate occasions and disobeying an order from a commanding officer. Under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, Private First Class Orton was tried and convicted under a special court-martial and was put into a military prison for thirty-eight days.

Wrestling training

Orton made his wrestling debut in 2000 at the Mid-Missouri Wrestling Association-Southern Illinois Conference Wrestling (MMWA-SICW) in St. Louis, Missouri , an offshoot of the historic St. Louis Wrestling Club headed by Sam Muchnick . There, he was trained by both the promotion and his father, "Cowboy" Bob Orton . He only wrestled at the promotion for one month, where he had matches against Ace Strange and Mark Bland . Orton also refereed a few matches with World Organized Wrestling, a promotion where his uncle Barry Orton worked.

In 2001, Orton signed a deal with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and was sent to their farm territory, Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) in Louisville, Kentucky , where he continued his training. During his time in OVW, Orton wrestled the likes of Rico Constantino and The Prototype and teamed with Bobby Eaton during a tag team title tournament. He won the OVW Hardcore Championship on two separate occasions by defeating Mr. Black on February 14, 2001 and Flash Flanagan on May 5, 2001.

World Wrestling Entertainment (2002–present)

Orton's first televised WWE match was against Hardcore Holly on SmackDown! on April 25, 2002 . Soon after, Orton became a face (crowd favorite) and was placed in a series of matches with Holly. In September 2002, Orton was drafted to the Raw brand, where he defeated Stevie Richards in his debut on the show. Within weeks of his debut on the Raw brand, Orton suffered a shoulder injury, leaving him sidelined for months. While recovering, Orton still appeared on Raw, in his own "Randy News Network" segment, a weekly vignette featuring him talking about his condition. The show interrupted other segments of Raw programming, which caused Orton to slowly transition himself into a narcissistic and self-centered heel .

After his injury healed, Orton joined Evolution , which consisted of Ric Flair , Triple H , and relative newcomer, Batista . The group was pushed on Raw from 2003 to 2004, with the height of their dominance occurring after Armageddon in 2003 when all of the men's titles on Raw were held by the members of Evolution. In 2003, Orton spent much of his time helping Triple H overcome challenges from Scott Steiner and Goldberg , former World Championship Wrestling (WCW) superstars who were vying with Triple H for the World Heavyweight Championship . Orton joined Triple H in a six-man Elimination Chamber match for the World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam and was involved primarily to secure Triple H's title defense.

Afterwards, Orton proclaimed himself "The Legend Killer", a young upstart who was so talented that he touted himself as the future of professional wrestling. He embarked on numerous storyline feuds with "legendary" wrestlers and gained infamy for his blatant disrespect of many older, well-regarded names in wrestling history. He defeated Shawn Michaels at Unforgiven , in the first of many high-profile matches billed as "Legend versus Legend Killer", with the help of his stablemate and mentor Ric Flair. Orton then spat in the face of Harley Race on the April 26, 2004 edition of Raw .

During this time, Orton began using the move that would become his signature finisher, the RKO, a jumping cutter, named after his initials. Orton soon defeated Rob Van Dam for the WWE Intercontinental Championship at Armageddon on December 14, 2003. With this win, Orton started the longest Intercontinental title reign in seven years, holding the title for seven months.

Orton continued to establish himself as a "Legend Killer" throughout 2004 , challenging the semi-retired wrestler Mick Foley . Famed for his hardcore matches and an ability to handle excruciating pain, Foley offered Orton a hardcore "Legend versus Legend Killer" match if Orton would put his Intercontinental Championship on the line. In a bloody match involving thumbtacks and barbed wire, Orton defeated Foley.

In July, at Vengeance , Edge defeated Orton to win the Intercontinental Championship, ending Orton's seven month title reign. After the loss of his Intercontinental Championship, Orton continued to rise in ranks within WWE , entering the World Heavyweight Championship scene. After becoming the number one contender on July 26 , he defeated Chris Benoit for the championship with the added distinction of being the youngest World Heavyweight Champion in wrestling history at age twenty-four. Benoit congratulated Orton after the match, shaking his hand for showing the ability to "be a man".

The following night, Evolution threw Orton a mock celebration, only to reveal that they were not pleased with his new victory. While Batista had Orton propped on his shoulders in elation, Triple H gave him a pleased thumbs up and then abruptly changed it to a thumbs-down, which was followed by Batista performing an Electric Chair on Orton. Ric Flair and Batista attacked Orton in the ring as Triple H revealed his jealousy for Orton's title. He ordered the young champion to hand over the championship, but Orton refused, spitting in Triple H's face and hitting him with the title belt. Orton's break-up with Evolution began a new storyline for him as a face when he continued to feud with his former stablemates. A month later, Orton lost his championship at Unforgiven .

Seeking revenge, Orton lashed out at Evolution members, catching them by surprise during a show by giving them a large cake as a make-up gift, which he came out of it to beat and humiliate the group. After this, Orton experienced another push, becoming General Manager of the Raw brand for a week following a match stipulation at Survivor Series . He continued to feud with Triple H, using his authority to place his opponents at severe disadvantages during title defenses. Orton was granted another chance at the championship in January 2005 but lost a six-man championship Elimination Chamber match to Triple H at New Year's Revolution . On the January 10 edition of Raw , Orton defeated Batista to earn a match against Triple H at the Royal Rumble for the World Heavyweight title. At the Royal Rumble , Triple H defeated Orton to retain the World title.

Orton began an on-screen relationship with Stacy Keibler and briefly feuded with Christian in February 2005. On the February 28 edition of Raw , "Superstar" Billy Graham made an appearance, in which he advised Orton to "go where no wrestler [had] gone before". Orton then produced a copy of SmackDown! magazine, which featured The Undertaker on the cover. Heeding Graham's advice, Orton claimed that he would set himself apart from all other wrestlers by ending The Undertaker's undefeated streak at WrestleMania . Throughout March 2005, Orton taunted The Undertaker, claiming he was unafraid of the eerie Deadman. On the March 21 edition of Raw , Orton turned heel once more after he delivered an RKO to his unsuspecting on-screen girlfriend, Stacy Keibler, knocking her unconscious. During Orton's promos, he would immediately run for cover when signs of The Undertaker's appearance were near (lightning, darkness, or smoke). When "legend" wrestler Jake Roberts advised Orton not to underestimate The Undertaker, Orton performed an RKO on Roberts as well. In the weeks leading up to WrestleMania, Orton became more defiant and unafraid of the Undertaker, taunting and assaulting him in the ring following distractions from his father, "Cowboy" Bob Orton. At WrestleMania 21 , however, the heavily hyped match was unsuccessful for Orton, as he lost despite his father's interference.

The following night on Raw, Orton faced Batista, who had become World Heavyweight Champion. Orton stated on-screen that his match with The Undertaker had aggravated a shoulder injury. While sidelined, Orton appeared on Raw and claimed that he was ineligible for the WWE Draft Lottery due to his injury. He was informed by then WWE Chairman Vince McMahon that he was indeed a candidate for the draft, leaving a possibility of a return to SmackDown!. Orton returned to WWE programming for the SmackDown! brand on June 16 , announcing that he was the second pick in the 2005 draft lottery.

He rekindled his feud with The Undertaker, defeating him at SummerSlam following a distraction from his father. Two months later, Orton and his father Bob Orton defeated The Undertaker in a Handicap Casket match . The following month, Orton was a participant in the Annual elimination match of Team SmackDown against Team Raw at Survivor Series . In the match, Orton was the last remaining wrestler in the match, as he pinned Shawn Michaels to get the victory for Team SmackDown. At the event, The Undertaker, who had been absent since Orton had apparently killed him on an episode of SmackDown!, returned by emerging from a flaming casket. The feud was finally settled with a Hell in a Cell match at the upcoming December 18 Armageddon , where The Undertaker offered to retire if he lost.

On December 16 , The Undertaker entered the ring to deliver a promo while one of his druids appeared to be standing in the ring. The Undertaker sustained an RKO from Orton in a surprise attack. The druid revealed himself to be Orton's father , who gave Orton the Undertaker's urn, which, according to the storyline, allowed whomever held it to control The Undertaker. The Undertaker, however, beat both Ortons in a Hell in a Cell match, which ended their nine-month-long feud with The Undertaker.

Following Armageddon, he was handpicked by the injured Booker T as his substitute in the "Best of Seven" series between Booker and Chris Benoit over the WWE United States Championship . Orton would go on to successfully defeat Benoit in the final match of the series and become the first person to win a championship for another wrestler as Booker T was awarded the US Title. Orton would go on to be the final entrant of the Royal Rumble but he was eliminated by Rey Mysterio . Mysterio won the match to earn a title shot at WrestleMania 22 , but Orton urged him to put the title shot at stake in a match at No Way Out . In the weeks preceding No Way Out, Orton made disparaging remarks about Eddie Guerrero , Mysterio's deceased friend, in an attempt to gain heel heat . Guerrero's death had occurred only months previously, and many fans felt the comments were unwarranted and highly distasteful. Orton won at No Way Out by using the ropes for leverage, earning Mysterio's title shot for the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 22. General Manager Theodore Long re-added Mysterio to the WrestleMania 22 title match, however, making it a Triple Threat match between Orton, Mysterio, and then-champion, Kurt Angle . On April 2, at WrestleMania 22, Orton was pinned by Mysterio, making Mysterio the World Heavyweight Champion and ending their on-screen rivalry.

On April 4, 2006, Orton was suspended for sixty days for "unprofessional conduct." In an interview, Orton stated, "my conduct was unbecoming of a champion, which is what I will be again when I return". To cover for the suspension, a faked injury was devised, where Kurt Angle broke Orton's ankle during a grudge match. In July, Orton said his suspension resulted from smoking marijuana backstage. Orton returned from his suspension in June to the Raw brand, where he engaged in a storyline feud with Hulk Hogan . Orton began cutting promos insulting the aging Hogan and flirted with Hogan's eighteen-year-old daughter Brooke . At SummerSlam , the two met in a "Legend vs. Legend Killer" match, which Hogan won.

After the newly reformed D-Generation X (DX) (Triple H and Shawn Michaels) cost Edge the WWE Championship numerous times, Edge approached Orton and asked him to join forces to defeat the team. Orton, whose championship reign had been ended by Triple H in 2004, agreed, forming the tag team Rated-RKO . The two became the first to defeat DX since their reunion and quickly dominated the Raw brand's tag team division to become tag team champions. As part of the angle, Rated-RKO attacked Ric Flair with steel chairs to enrage DX on November 27. At New Year's Revolution , Rated-RKO faced DX in a title defense, but the match was declared a no-contest when Triple H suffered a legitimate injury during the match.

With Triple H out of action, Rated-RKO continued their on-screen rivalry with remaining DX member Shawn Michaels. Michaels teamed with John Cena to defeat Rated-RKO for the tag team championship on January 29. Orton and Edge suffered a series of losses to Cena and Michaels in the following months, building hatred towards one another. Edge and Orton also became rivals in their goals of achieving the WWE Championship . Neither Edge nor Orton won the Championship, and they lost their claims as number one contenders after a failed match with Cena at Backlash . Orton then continued his "Legend Killer" persona, attacking Shawn Michaels. Using frequent attacks to the head, including an elevated DDT and a running punt to the face, Orton defeated Michaels at Judgment Day . When the kayfabe wounded and concussed Michaels collapsed in the ring, the referee was forced to stop the match and award Orton the victory. Orton continued his attacks when he engaged himself in feuds with Rob Van Dam, Ric Flair, Dusty Rhodes , and Sgt. Slaughter .

On the July 23 edition of Raw , Orton was named as the number one contender at SummerSlam for John Cena's WWE Championship. Weeks before their scheduled match at SummerSlam , Orton attacked Cena on three separate occasions by performing RKOs on him. At SummerSlam, Orton lost the title match to Cena, who pinned Orton after executing an FU. The following night on Raw, Orton demanded a rematch for the title, but his request was declined by Raw General Manager William Regal . Orton then took his demands to Mr. McMahon, who also refused to give Orton a rematch unless he proved himself. That night, Orton interfered in Cena's match by assaulting Cena and kicking Cena's father, who was at ringside, in the head. Orton was granted his title rematch against Cena at Unforgiven and won by disqualification when Cena refused to stop punching Orton in the corner. Cena retained the WWE title because a title cannot change hands by disqualification. After the match, Cena's father, who was again at ringside, kicked Orton in the head. At No Mercy , Orton was awarded the WWE Championship by Mr. McMahon after Cena was stripped of the title due to an injury the previous week, which also ended the Orton-Cena storyline prematurely. Orton then lost the title to Triple H in the opening match of the show, making Orton's reign the third shortest in WWE history. Later in the night, Orton defeated Triple H in a Last Man Standing match to regain the title, thus becoming a two-time WWE Champion in one night.

Following No Mercy , Orton continued his feud with Shawn Michaels, who made his return on the October 8 edition of Raw and performed Sweet Chin Music on Orton. The two met in a title match at Cyber Sunday after a match was made in which the fans would get to vote on either Michaels, Jeff Hardy or Mr. Kennedy as the opponent. As a result, Michaels was voted to face Orton. In the match, Orton was disqualified when he performed a low blow on Michaels, but Orton retained the title. In a scheduled rematch, Orton successfully defended the title at Survivor Series against Michaels when he performed the RKO on Michaels for the win. The stipulation of the match was that if Michaels used Sweet Chin Music, the match would be stopped and Michaels would never get a chance at the WWE title, but if Orton got himself disqualified, he would lose the title.

After weeks of intensity between the two, Orton defeated Jeff Hardy to retain the WWE Championship at the Royal Rumble . Following this, he re-engaged in his feud with John Cena, who had returned from injury and won the 2008 Royal Rumble match . Instead of cashing in his title opportunity at WrestleMania XXIV , Cena decided to face Orton for the title at No Way Out . Orton lost the match after getting himself intentionally disqualified, thus retaining the title. At WrestleMania XXIV, Orton retained the WWE Championship in a Triple Threat match involving Cena and Triple H. Orton won the match by pinning Cena after a Pedigree from Triple H. The following month, at Backlash , Orton lost the title to Triple H in a Fatal Four-Way Elimination match, which also included Cena and John "Bradshaw" Layfield . After failing to win the title back at Judgment Day , Orton faced Triple H in a Last Man Standing match at One Night Stand for the title. Orton lost the match and legitimately broke his collarbone.

He made his in-ring return on the November 3 episode of Raw losing to CM Punk by disqualification, after Ted DiBiase Jr. interfered. As retaliation Orton went on to punt DiBiase in the head. On the December 1 episode of Raw , Orton proposed that he along with Cody Rhodes and Manu form an alliance. The following week, they made it official, by defeating Batista and Triple H, Orton's former stablemates, in a three-on-two handicap match, dubbing themselves The Legacy. On January 25, 2009, Orton won the 2009 Royal Rumble match, by last eliminating Triple H, and winning the traditional WrestleMania title shot.

In trying to elicit an apology from Stephanie McMahon for disrespecting him, Mr. McMahon, who returned WWE Television since his accident back in the summer of 2008, was on the brink of firing Orton. This prompted Orton to smack McMahon and in the end punted him. A shocked Randy Orton stood looking at what had he had done, as paramedics, along with RAW GM Stephanie McMahon, rushed the ring. The following week on RAW, Randy Orton revealed that he suffered from a condition known as "I.E.D.," or better known as Intermittent Explosive Disorder. Orton also revealed that the WWE had prior knowledge of this condition and did nothing about it. Orton challenged that if he was reprimanded for his action he would go as far as to sue the WWE, even mentioning that in effect, WrestleMania XXV would be canceled. Stephanie McMahon responded with threatening Orton that both she and Shane McMahon would seek revenge. An irate Shane McMahon appeared on RAW and attacked Orton, thus setting up a No Disqualification match at No Way Out . Randy Orton came out victorious in the match, after interference by Legacy. The next day on RAW, Shane McMahon once again challenged Orton to a match, this time ordering Orton to keep Legacy away. Legacy nonetheless interfered and helped Orton pick up the win. However, after the match, Orton proceeded to punt Shane as well. This prompted both Stephanie McMahon and paramedics to rush the ring. A maddened Stephanie scorned Orton for his actions, which led him to hit her with an RKO. Once again, Orton was shocked at what he had done. This began a feud with Orton and Triple H and he unsuccessfully challenged Triple H for the WWE title at WrestleMania XXV . He won it the next month at Backlash by pinning Triple H in a special six-man tag match between The Legacy and Triple H, Batista and Shane McMahon . At Extreme Rules , he dropped the title to Batista in a Steel Cage match .The following night on Raw , Orton and Legacy attacked Batista, legitimately injuring him in the process and forcing him to vacate the title.

On the June 15 episode of Raw , Orton regained the title in a Fatal Four Way match involving Triple H, John Cena and The Big Show . Orton lost the title to John Cena in an "I Quit" match at Breaking Point . He regained the title again from Cena in a Hell in a Cell match at the Hell in a Cell . At Bragging Rights , Orton lost the title to Cena in a 60-minute Iron Man match where if Orton had won Cena would be forced to leave Raw. On the January 11, 2010 episode of Raw , Orton won a triple threat match , with the help of Rhodes and DiBiase, to challenge Sheamus at the Royal Rumble for the WWE Championship. At the Royal Rumble, however, Orton failed to win the championship when Rhodes interfered, causing a disqualification. After the match, Orton attacked Rhodes and DiBiase. On the February 15 episode of Raw , Orton was again disqualified in a rematch after Rhodes and DiBiase interfered. Orton and DiBiase both competed in the WWE Championship Elimination Chamber match at the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view, and DiBiase eliminated Orton after hitting him with a pipe which Rhodes had passed to him. The next night on Raw , in a six-man tag team match, Orton attacked Rhodes and DiBiase in retaliation, and turning face in the process.

He then won the championship from Sheamus and lost it to The Miz . He couldn't get it back because of CM Punk.

A month later, at the SummerSlam pay-per-view event, Orton regained the title when he defeated Christian in a No Holds Barred match. Orton ended his feud with Christian when he retained the World Championship in a Steel Cage Match on the August 30 episode of SmackDown . Bryan and Orton faced off once again for the vacant championship at  Hell in a Cell , where Orton won the title after special guest referee Shawn Michaels superkicked Bryan. He also was successful at retaining his title against Big Show at Survivor Series . On the November 25 edition of Raw , Orton's long time rival and current World Heavyweight Champion John Cena suggested that there should only be "one champion" in the WWE, so Triple H slated that there would be a unification match at the  TLC  pay-per-view. Orton defeated Cena at TLC to unify his WWE Championship with Cena's World Heavyweight Championship, and with that victory being recognized as the final World Heavyweight Champion. Orton would then defeat Cena again in the subsequent rematch at the  Royal Rumble  PPV, aided by  The Wyatt Family .

On February 23, 2014, Orton defeated John Cena ,  Sheamus ,  Daniel Bryan ,  Christian  and  Cesaro  at  Elimination Chamber  to retain his WWE World Heavyweight Championship and secure his position in the title bout at  WrestleMania XXX  on April 6, 2014 against Batista, who returned to WWE and won the Royal Rumble match. The WrestleMania main event was changed to a triple threat match with Daniel Bryan defeating Triple H, and Orton's reign as champion ended with Bryan forcing Batista to submit. The following night on Raw, Both Batista and Orton were denied a rematch for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship and instead were forced by The Authority to team together to face WWE Tag Team Champions  The Usos  ( Jey Uso & Jimmy Uso ) for the titles, despite their issues with each other. The title match ended in a double count-out after the two united and delivered a beat down on the champions. On the April 11th edition of Smackdown , Randy took part in a Six-Man Tag Team match which ended in a double count-out when Orton and Batista were fighting The Usos on the outside of the ring. On the April 14th edition of Raw , Randy Orton & Batista faced the Usos once again in a rematch that resulted in a disqualification when The Shield interfered and attacked both Orton and Batista. Later that evening, The Authority put The Shield in an 11-on-3 Handicap match, which ultimately led to a reunited  Evolution  coming down to the ring and dismantling The Shield. The next week on Raw , The Shield confronted Evolution. Randy faced Roman Reigns in a match on the April 28 edition of Raw that ended in a no contest. At Extreme Rules , The Shield defeated Evolution in a six-man tag team match. The next night on Raw, Evolution got payback on The Shield when they came to the ring during The Shield's match against the  Wyatt Family  causing a distraction which allowed for  Bray Wyatt  to pick up the win for the Wyatt Family and allowing Evolution to attack The Shield after the match; with Randy Orton DDT'ing Seth Rollins from the top rope, Batista spinebusting Dean Ambrose on the steel steps, Triple H pedigreeing Roman Reigns and Evolution triple power bombing Roman Reigns as the final onslaught. At Payback , Evolution lost to The Shield for a second time. On the June 9 episode of Raw , The Authority automatically granted Orton a spot in the Money in the Bank Ladder match for the vacant WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

On July 28 edition of Raw , he blindsided Roman Reigns just before his match against Kane. He blames Reigns for costing him a WWE World Heavyweight title opportunity at SummerSlam .

After losing a Number #1 Contender's match to John Cena at the 2014 Hell in a Cell PPV , he RKO'ed Seth Rollins and turned face, leaving The Authority in the process.

On the November 3rd Raw , after increasing frustration, Orton attacked Rollins during his Intercontinental Championship against Dolph Ziggler, causing Rollins to win by disqualification (but not the title), and demanded a match with Rollins to settle their dispute, which Triple H granted in order to keep Orton on their side. Rollins got the win with a backside pin, and Orton cemented his face turn by attacking The Authority before being Curb Stomped by Rollins. He was then carried off on a stretcher after he sustained a scripted injury so he could start filming Condemned 2: Desert Prey.

Various Feuds and Injury (2015)

Randy Orton made his return at Fast Lane 2015 , delivering RKOs to both Kane and Big Show. The following night on RAW, Orton was offered a position back with The Authority, and after slight hesitation, accepted the offer, which put him and Seth Rollins in a Tag Team match against Daniel Bryan and Roman Reigns, which they would lose. Weeks later, he was put in a handicap match with Seth Rollins against Roman Reigns. After refusing to tag Rollins, which cost them the match, Orton turned on Rollins and brutally beat him with a steel chair, followed by an RKO through the announce table. Orton would go on to challenge Rollins to a match which Rollins accepted under the condition of a match the same night. When the match was set to take place, Rollins revealed his trap and attempted to attack Orton with the rest of The Authority until Sting came to Orton's rescue to fight off The Authority. Orton would go on to defeat Rollins at WrestleMania XXXI and unsuccessfully challenge him for his newly won WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Extreme Rules in a steel cage match and Payback in a fatal four way involving Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose . Orton was also a participant in the 2015 Money in the Bank ladder match which was won by Sheamus . He entered a feud with Sheamus afterwards with the two trading PPV victories, Orton winning at Battleground and Sheamus at SummerSlam . In September 2015, Orton started a feud with The Wyatt Family . On September 7 episode of Raw , Orton defeated Sheamus in a singles match. After the match, The Wyatt Family jumped Orton, leaving him out of action. On the September 21 episode of Raw , Orton returned to save Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns from The Wyatt Family, starting an alliance between Ambrose, Reigns, and Orton. On the next Raw, Orton teamed up with Ambrose to take on The New Day in a losing effort. Before the next Raw, Orton was taken out of the Hell in a Cell match after sustaining a legit shoulder injury while taking out his trash, putting him out of action for the following months

Return (2016-present)

Orton was announced as the opponent of Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam, however Orton was slated to return at Battleground in a special Highlight reel with Chris Jericho . Orton would RKO Jericho at the PPV. Orton would be drafted to Smackdown at the night of the Draft. Orton went up against Brock at SummerSlam, which he lost via TKO. Orton started a feud with Bray Wyatt, resulting in a match at Backlash. The match would not happen due to Orton suffering a concussion. Orton vs Wyatt was moved to No Mercy instead.

Controversies

While on the Raw brand, Orton was accused of harassing fellow WWE employees Amy Weber and Rochelle Loewen . Loewen, who has called Orton "an animal," claimed that he vandalized her possessions and subjected her to harassment. Fellow WWE Diva Search contestant (and eventual winner) Christy Hemme has stated in an interview with The Sun that she does not believe that Orton harassed Weber or Loewen.

On March 19, 2007, Sports Illustrated posted an article on its website as part of its continuing series investigating a steroid and HGH ring used by a number of professional athletes in several sports. That article mentioned several current and former WWE wrestlers, including Orton who was alleged to have obtained clomiphene citrate, anastrozole and the steroids stanozolol, nandrolone, oxandrolone, and testosterone. WWE has since made a statement on this situation, claiming that the allegations preceded the Talent Wellness program WWE launched in February 2006.

On January 13, 2010, it was reported that a complaint of assault had been filed against Orton by a fifteen year old fan in Saugus, Massachusetts. The fan alleged that Orton had spit gum in his face and called him a profane word.

Personal life

In November 2005 , Orton announced his engagement to his girlfriend Samantha Speno. They married on September 21, 2007 . In December 2007, Orton announced that he and his wife were expecting their first child, a daughter. Orton and his wife welcomed Alanna Marie Orton on July 12, 2008 . In June 2013 , Randy Orton and Samantha divorced on amicable terms.

In July 2015, Orton announced his engagement to new girlfriend Kimberly Kessler and they were married on November 14 of that year.

He had a tattoo on his left arm which read "USMC" for United States Marine Corps but covered it up after receiving a bad conduct discharge from the service. He was sent home after serving thirty-eight days in military prison at Camp Pendleton in California.

Orton suffers from hypermobile shoulders. After being medically cleared to wrestle following his collarbone injury in a Last Man Standing match at One Night Stand 2008 against Triple H, Orton re-injured his collarbone in a motorcycle accident, which delayed his in-ring return for another few months.

  • If Orton could pick one legend to enter the ring with, it would be his father.
  • Orton is the 3rd person to pin John Cena 3 times, following Kurt Angle and Edge . He is followed by CM Punk and The Miz .
  • Orton is friends off-screen with Edge , CM Punk , and John Cena .
  • Orton's RKO has become a popular internet meme titled "RKO Outta Nowhere" which features a compilation of videos with Orton being superimposed appearing to RKO'ing people randomly.

From "Legend Killer" to Legend: A Look at the WWE Career of Randy Orton

The WWE career of Randy Orton serves as a blueprint for all prospective WWE Superstars to follow!

Close up of Randy Orton

As one of the most decorated and beloved WWE Superstars of all time, Randy Orton has been conspicuous by his absence on Raw and SmackDown... Until now.

How to Watch

Watch Monday Night RAW every Monday evening at 8/7c on USA Network. Stream more exciting WWE series on Peacock .

Cody Rhodes revealed in spectacular fashion during a recent appearance on Monday Night RAW that, after months out of the ring, Orton will join him, Sami Zayn, Jey Uso and Seth Rollins in a bout against Drew McIntyre and The Judgment Day (Finn Bàlor, Dominik Mysterio, JD McDonagh and Damian Priest) at Survivor Series War Games. The crowd at Raw was hyped to hear about Orton's return with good reason. He's one of the most popular and interesting WWE Superstars to ever grace the ring.

As  USA Insider  takes you back for a brief look at the career of Randy Orton, the  WWE  Universe will find it easy to understand how effortlessly he climbed the ranks of WWE to become one of the best to ever step in the ring.

How Did Randy Orton Break Into WWE?

Randy Orton stands with his arms outstretched

In the early 2000s, rumors were flying that the son of legendary WWE Superstar "Cowboy" Bob Orton was training to follow in his father's footsteps. On September 23, 2002, the rumors turned out to be true. The WWE Universe laid their eyes on 22-year-old Randy Orton, a WWE Superstar making his debut to moderate fanfare. Up to that point, the WWE Universe had seen this before: A young up-and-comer pitched as "the future" of pro wrestling. They'd seen it with  The Rock ,  Brock Lesnar , and countless other young Superstars, and at the time, the jury was still out on Randy Orton.

His debut match against Stevie Richards was a perfectly acceptable wrestling contest – Orton showed flashes of brilliance but almost none of the charisma that defined his legendary career. In retrospect, it's bizarre watching Orton win a match with  a finishing move  other than the RKO (he used a flying body press as a finishing move early in his career).

Still, WWE Hall of Fame announcer Jim Ross said it best during that night's telecast:

"Win or lose, Randy Orton is going to have a heck of a career."

Truer words couldn't have been spoken.

Why Was Randy Orton Called "The Legend Killer?"

Close up of Randy Orton

As Randy Orton found his footing in WWE, he fine-tuned his persona along the way. Soon after his debut, he caught the attention of Triple H and  Ric Flair , the latter took him under his wing (along with  Dave Bautista ) as part of the faction known as Evolution. The group was presented as the past, present, and future of professional wrestling, and there wasn't a better way for young Randy to learn the ins and outs of the industry than by being around the likes of Triple H and Ric Flair.

While his  time with Evolution  was memorable in its own right, Randy Orton came into his own when he adopted the "Legend Killer" persona.

Orton's mission was straightforward at this point in his career: He was tired of living in the shadow of countless WWE legends. He was tired of waiting his turn to ascend to the top of the wrestling world. So, he decided to take those legends out, one by one. Established WWE Superstars like Mick Foley, Ric Flair, and even  The Undertaker  were targeted by this new, evil version of Randy Orton, leading to increasingly chaotic matches. In fact, many in the WWE Universe regard Orton's  iconic hardcore match  against Mick Foley at WrestleMania 21 as the precise time Orton officially "arrived" in WWE.

Competing for the  World Heavyweight Championship , Intercontinental Championship, and Tag Team Titles on numerous occasions, Randy Orton proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that he belonged in the ring with the top talent of Raw and SmackDown.

When Did Randy Orton Reach the Top of WWE?

Randy Orton stands on the top rope of the ring

It is evident that Orton reached new heights as "The Legend Killer," and like all top-tier Superstars, he didn't stop there. It became apparent that the WWE Universe had a newfound respect for Orton – having as many impressive wins under your belt does wonders for how you're perceived by the fans, after all. Before long, Orton began competing for the top championships in WWE. After defeating Triple H in an epic  Last Man Standing Match  at No Mercy 2007, he found himself holding the prestigious WWE Championship for the first time in his career.

Despite capturing the top prize in his industry, it took one man to finally take Orton from "Legend Killer" to legend in his own right.

Enter John Cena.

From the first time they met one-on-one on an episode of Raw in 2005 to the countless times they  competed for the WWE Championship  throughout their careers, Orton and Cena were a match made in heaven for fans worldwide. They brought out the best in each other, and the WWE Universe was treated to dozens of unforgettable matches over the years. Although titles were won and lost, neither man was ultimately able to gain the upper hand – any momentum gained would be given back on short notice. That's how equally matched they were.

The long-lasting rivalry between Randy Orton and  John Cena  could be best described as WWE's version of the NFL's Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. Both men were in the conversation of being the greatest of all time despite their careers being nowhere close to being over. As a result, both Superstars' paths crossed quite often. Randy Orton versus John Cena was a rivalry that played out over several years, and as a result, the two men are intrinsically linked. You can't speak of either man's career without mentioning the other.

John Cena brought out the best in Randy Orton and vice versa. Even in 2023, they are closely tied together. Cena famously  co-holds the record  for most world titles won in WWE history at 16, but Orton isn't far behind with 14.

Interestingly enough, despite their endless string of matches against each other, Randy Orton and John Cena have never met at WrestleMania.

When Was Randy Orton's Last WWE Match?

Randy Orton speaks while standing in the ring

The WWE Universe last saw Randy Orton compete in the ring in May 2022, when he and Matt Riddle failed to win the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championships. It was a pivotal moment in the  vaunted Bloodline storyline  that is still going strong today.

Unfortunately, fans haven't seen Randy Orton appear on WWE television for over a year, but the 14-time WWE Champion will be back at Survivor Series 2023.

What is Randy Orton Most Known For?

Without question, fans and non-fans are familiar with Orton's lasting legacy in the wrestling industry: the RKO.

Orton's  finishing move  has become so iconic that there are thousands of memes based around the "out of nowhere" aspect of the move. People have performed the move to their friends and family as homage to one of the greatest WWE Superstars ever. Don't believe us? Do a quick search of "RKO outta nowhere" on your social media platform of choice, and you'll see what we mean.

(You know the RKO has become a permanent pop culture fixture when high school graduates are  performing the move  to each other during their graduation ceremonies!)

Like everyone, we're excited to see Orton's grand return to the ring. After all, there are still many more RKOs to deliver in the near future!

You can tune in to  Peacock  to watch WWE's Fastlane on October 7. In the meantime, catch up on all things WWE Universe on  Peacock .

On March 16, 2002 , Orton appeared for the first time officially in WWF at WrestleMania X8’s Fan Axxess but was televised only on SmackDown on April 25 of the same year. Instantly, he acquired love from his fans.

And eventually, he was drafted to the Raw brand. In his debut on the show, he defeated Stevie Richards.

Later, he joined Ric Flair , Triple H, and Batista in the Evolution stable, who dominated all the men’s titles on Raw in 2003.

He gained notoriety for feuds with respected wrestlers with his self-proclaimed “The Legend Killer” title. During those times, he developed his famous signature finisher, the RKO.

Youngest WWE Champion

By defeating Chris Benoit at SummerSlam , Orton became the youngest world champion at the age of 24. Besides, he defended the title against Benoit in a rematch on Raw.

However, his Evolution mates were not pleased with his victory, and he had several feuds and fights with them, resulting in his breakup with the group.

Also, he lost to Triple H at the Royal Rumble for the World Heavyweight title in January 2005.

To avenge his title loss to Triple H, Orton agreed with Edge to form a tag team, “Rated-RKO,” that defeated DX (Triple H and Shawn Michaels ).

Soon, the two became the World Tag Team Champions. However, later they competed against each other, and the team finally broke up when Edge was drafted to SmackDown .

WWE Championships

Orton won the WWE Championship in 2007 after John Cena left it due to injury.

He regained it with Triple H and retained it with Shawn Michaels , Chris Jericho, Jeff Hardy , John Cena , and Triple H on multiple occasions.

Randy Orton inside the ring

Further, in a No Holds Barred match in August, he again regained the title against Christian.

Later, in December 2013, he defeated John Cena at TLC to become the last heavyweight champion, the fourth for him.

In the orbit of the WWE United States Championship, he defeated the Champion Bobby Roode to be the 18 th Grand Slam Champion.

He teamed with Daniel Bryan and Kane on the June 14 SmackDown to end the Shield’s unpinned and unsubmitted streak.

His nickname truly reflected his persona of disrespecting many legends of the competition and defeating them on several occasions.

He also adopted “the Viper” character for his deceitful personality, like a snake.

Exclusive 'biography: wwe legends' sneak peek: randy orton reveals who he called after historic summerslam win, share this article.

Even a future WWE Hall of Famer like Randy Orton had to get started by winning his first world championship, and in his case, he did it in history-making fashion.

The Viper was just 24 years old when he won the World Heavyweight Championship in the main event of SummerSlam 2004, becoming the youngest world champion in WWE history. It should come as no surprise that it’s a moment that Orton still remembers well, including the first people he called (and the person who let him borrow their cellphone to make those calls).

If you are thinking about Orton’s family ties to the pro wrestling business, you’re on the right track. Check out the exclusive clip from the upcoming season premiere of “Biography: WWE Legends” to hear Orton talk about that night in his own words.

It’s interesting to hear Orton admit at the end of the clip that he “definitely was not ready” to hold the world title at that time, which is perhaps the kind of self-awareness that only comes with time.

Expect to hear a lot more of those insights in the full episode. Here’s a summary from A&E: Randy Orton is largely considered to be one of the greatest WWE Superstars of his generation, with an incredible career that has spanned twenty years. However, the path he took to step out of the shadow of his father’s legacy and reach the pinnacle of sports entertainment, was not easy. From his ill-fated chapter in the United States Marine Corps to his battles with anger management and substance abuse, his journey to overcome his demons led him to become the man he is today.

The season premiere of “Biography: WWE Legends” debuts this Sunday, Feb. 25 at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following a new season premiere of “WWE Rivals” that focuses on the conflict between Triple H and The Rock. Be sure to set your DVR or stream the episodes live as soon as the following day on aetv.com .

14 Things You Didn't Know About WWE Superstar Randy Orton

July 21, 2017 / 11:57 AM EDT / CBS New York

By Norm Elrod

Randy Orton, aka "The Apex Predator," "The Viper" or the "The Legend Killer," is one of the most recognizable names in professional wrestling. A WWE champion many times over, he's been stalking the ring, taking down foes for going on two decades.

But his career path, let alone his meteoric success, was never a sure thing. Orton grew up around the business, but never felt a strong pull to follow his father into the squared circle. After an ill-fated stint the marines, and an early break, he found his calling. The rest, as they say, is history.

Here are 14 things you didn't know about WWE superstar Randy Orton:

1. Randy Orton was born Randal Orton in April, 1980 in Knoxville, Tennessee. The oldest of three children, he's a third-generation pro wrestler from a family that includes father, 'Cowboy' Bob Orton, uncle Barry Orton and grandfather Bob Orton Sr.

2. Randy Orton went to Hazelwood Central High School in Florissant, Missouri, where he wrestled as an amateur. He graduated in 1998.

3. Orton joined the United States Marines  after graduating high school. He completed boot camp, followed by School of Infantry, where he became a squad leader. At some point along the way, Orton realized he "didn't have the courage to die for my country" and started looking for a way out. After going AWOL twice and disobeying a commanding officer's orders, he received a bad conduct discharge -- not a dishonorable discharge, which is worse. Subsequent to discharge, he served 38 days in the brig at Camp Pendleton.

4. Between the Marines and professional wrestling, Orton worked the midnight shift at a gas station near his St. Louis home.

5. WWE signed Orton to a developmental contract before he even knew how to wrestle. As Orton described it, his dad "...called a couple of his buddies -- Tony Garea, Jack Lanza. They were agents at the time, road agents. They had a show in St. Louis in October of '99. I came down, met Lanza, met Garea. And they hired me, right on the spot, just because I was a third-generation wrestler."

6. Orton first entered the ring in 2000 with Mid-Missouri Wrestling Association-Southern Illinois Conference Wrestling, where his father helped train him. He was only there a month.

7. Orton, on his developmental contract, trained with Brock Lesnar, John Cena and Batista, who were also learning the ropes with Ohio Valley Wrestling , the WWE's main developmental territory from 2000 to 2008. All would go on to become household names in the wrestling world and beyond.

8. Orton was the second-youngest WWE Intercontinental champion . (Jeff Hardy was the youngest.) He took down Rob Van Dam in December, 2003 at Armageddon, starting a seven-month reign that lasted until  Edge defeated him the following July at Vengeance.

9. In August of 2004, at the age of 24, Orton became the youngest WWE World Heavyweight champion , taking down Chris Benoit at that year's SummerSlam. He lost the belt to Triple H at Unforgiven a month later.

10. The RKO, Orton's finishing move that's named with his initials , is similar to the Elevated Cutter or Diamond Cutter. In executing the RKO, Orton wraps his arm around his opponent's head in a three-quarter facelock, cradling his opponent's chin on his bicep. Then Orton jumps, feet-first and lands on his back, appearing to slam his opponent's head into the mat.

11. The RKO became part of a popular and hilarious internet meme that saw Orton, performing the move, inserted into videos  of people taking nasty tumbles. On a basic level, it looks as if Orton's RKO is causing the fall.

12. Orton is married for the second time . He has five children, including three stepsons and two daughters, the youngest of whom was born in November of 2016. She is the couple's only child together.

13. Orton guest-starred on Shooter , a cable drama starring Ryan Phillippe as an ex-Marine sharpshooter drawn out of private life by a plot to kill the president. In the December 2016 episode, Orton plays a second amendment zealot and former Navy Seal who runs a fringe militia.

14. Orton has starred or appeared in multiple movies , all made through WWE Studios. They include That's What I Am with Ed Harris (2011), 12 Rounds 2: Reloaded (2013), The Condemned 2 (2015) and Countdown (2016). He was also cast to star in The Marine 2 and The Marine 3: Homefront but replaced for the first after hurting his collarbone and the second due to general uneasiness with his Marine history.

Norm Elrod likes sports and other sanctioned forms of craziness.

Biography [ ]

Prior to his WWE career and time in Evolution, Randy Orton was enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, but received a Bad Conduct Discharge in 1999. He soon turned his attention to wrestling and trained at MMWA-SICW in St. Louis, Missouri. He was soon recruited into Ohio Valley Wrestling where he wrestled and trained further before officially joining the WWE roster as a professional wrestler.

Evolution [ ]

The stable known as Evolution consisted of WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair , Triple H , and Batista. Around 2004 stable mate Ric Flair would help Orton transition to "The Legend Killer" as he proclaimed himself and began to try to "kill" the Hall of Famers career in the WWE using his now signature move the "RKO". A series of matches called "Legend versus Legend Killer" began showing Orton versus the Legend of the week ranging from Mick Foley to Shawn Michaels. Orton later became the youngest World Heavyweight Champion in history by defeating wrestler Chris Benoit at WWE Pay-per-view SummerSlam. The other members threw him a mock celebration resulting in an assault of Orton by all other members. Orton in a series of weeks would seek revenge on the remaining members and ultimately end Evolution. After parting ways with Evolution, Orton would turn face and proceed to feud with Evolution for a while.

The Legend Killer [ ]

Orton would taunted The Undertaker , claiming he was unafraid of the eerie Deadman. On the March 21 edition of Raw, Orton turned heel once more after he delivered an RKO to his unsuspecting on-screen girlfriend, Stacy Keibler, knocking her unconscious. At WrestleMania 21, however, the heavily hyped match was unsuccessful for Orton, as he lost despite his father's interference. Orton later on went to beat The Undertaker at SummerSlam with assistance from his father, along with defeating The Undertaker in a handicap casket match, before chopping holes in the coffin and pouring gas into the coffin, before setting it on fire. The Undertaker later returned at Survivor Series, attacking all of the Smackdown locker room after Randy secured the victory for Team Smackdown. Orton later killed The Undertaker again by using an RKO on him when he was protecting Rey Mysterio from Big Show and Kane, before being placed on Rey Mysterio's lowrider and being rammed into the Smackdown stage, causing an explosion. The Undertaker put his career on the line by defeating both Randy and Bob at Armageddon, ending the feud. Randy Orton would later enter the 2006 Royal Rumble at #30, before being eliminated last by Rey Mysterio. Orton later disrespected Eddie Guerrero to throw Mysterio off in an negatively-received storyline, before winning Mysterio's title shot at No Way Out, before Theodore Long brought Mysterio back into the World Heavyweight Championship match at Wrestlemania 22 after he was upset with Orton winning dirty. Mysterio pinned Orton at Wrestlemania 22's World Heavyweight Championship match that also involved Kurt Angle, the previous World Heavyweight Champion.

The Legacy and Singles Competition [ ]

Legacy-0

Randy Orton with Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase

Orton along with fellow wrestlers Ted DiBiase Jr., son of WWE Hall of Famer "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase , and Cody Rhodes, son of WWE Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes, formed The Legacy with minor help from wrestler Manu. After the 2009 Royal Rumble which Orton won with The Legacy's help, he and Legacy members carried out attacks (through matches and sideline assaults) on Orton's former Evolution stable mates Triple H and Batista and various other opponents of Orton's. He went on to win the WWE Championship and had a reign lasting until John Cena defeated Orton for the title. On January 11, 2010 Orton had qualified to challenge wrestler Sheamus at the years Royal Rumble. He lost the match due to interference by Cody Rhodes who Orton later attacked. Orton was disqualified from a rematch that his other Legacy stable mates interfered in and out of retaliation, he attacked the two once more. Ted DiBiase was later in competition with Orton for the WWE Championship which came to height at the WWE Pay-per-view Elimination Chamber where DiBiase hit Orton with a pipe which was passed to him by Rhodes. The end of Legacy was final at Wrestlemania XXVI where the three were pit against one another in a triple threat match, which Orton won, turning him into a fan favorite for the first time in over five years.

On the next night of RAW, Randy Orton sides with Triple H again as a heel ever since Evolution where he is now named "The Face of the WWE". Randy Orton would go on to do Triple H's dirty work by attacking other wrestlers that questioned his decisions most notably Daniel Bryan. "The Hounds of Justice" The Shield commonly aid Orton in beatdowns of Daniel Bryan. Randy Orton would then go on to end the career of his former partner Cody Rhodes and even defeats his brother Goldust. However, Randy Orton then loses the WWE Championship back to Daniel Bryan after a fast count by WWE referee Scott Armstrong at the Night of Champions. On the next night of RAW, a really upset Randy Orton viciously attacks The Miz in his own hometown and even in front of his parents. Orton would continue this mean streak by taking it out on other wrestlers trying to earn back his WWE title.

Orton and Bryan faced off for the vacant title on at Battleground, but the match ended in a no contest after Big Show interfered and knocked out both men. Orton once again challenged Bryan for the vacant championship at Hell in a Cell, where he was successful in regaining the WWE Championship after the special guest referee Shawn Michaels hit Bryan with Sweet Chin Music for attacking Triple H.

At Survivor Series, after successfully defeating Big Show at Survivor Series, after the match Orton was confronted by World Heavyweight Champion and long-time rival John Cena.

The following night on Raw, Cena suggested that there should only be "one champion" in WWE, so Triple H stated there would be a unification match at the TLC pay-per-view. Orton defeated Cena at the TLC to unify both world titles, and become the first "WWE World Heavyweight Champion" as well as being recognized as the final World Heavyweight Champion. Orton cemented his legacy with his title victory.

Orton goes on to defend his newly crowned WWE World Heavyweight Championship at the Royal Rumble successfully defending it, due to The Wyatt Family interference.

At WrestleMania XXX, he failed to retained the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against Daniel Bryan and Batista, when Daniel Bryan forced Batista to tap out of the YES! Lock. Ending his 161 day reign as champion.

The night after Wrestemania, Orton and Batista were each denied a rematch for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship and instead were forced by The Authority to team together to face WWE Tag Team Champions The Usos for the title, despite their issues with one another. The title match ended in a double count-out after the two united and attacked them.

Later in the night in a 3-on-2 handicap street fight which pitted Orton, Kane, and Seth Rollins against Cena and Ambrose, Orton picked up the win but was immediately attacked by Rollins with a Curb Stomp. At Hell in a Cell, Cena defeated Orton. The following night on Raw, Orton attacked Rollins with an RKO, thus defying The Authority for not controlling Rollins the previous week and beginning a face turn for the first time since 2013.

Seth Rollins "curb stomping" a bloodied Randy Orton

On the November 3 Raw, after increasing frustration, Orton attacked Rollins during his Intercontinental Championship against Dolph Ziggler, causing Rollins to win by disqualification, and demanded a match with Rollins to settle their dispute, which Triple H granted in order to keep Orton on their side. Rollins won, and Orton completed his face turn by attacking The Authority before being attacked by The Authority, which ended with Rollins executing a Curb Stomp onto the steel steps on Orton. Resulting in his injury.

At Fastlane, after The Authority (Big Show, Seth Rollins, and Kane) defeated Dolph Ziggler, Erick Rowan and Ryback, Orton returned and saved Ziggler, Rowan and Ryback from a post-match beatdown. He later gave an RKO to Jamie Noble and Joey Mercury (J&J Security) and Kane. The next night on Raw , The Authority tried to convince Orton to come back to the "family", but Orton did not give an answer straight away until he saw them backstage. During a tag team match later that night, Orton became frustrated and upset after Rollins tagged himself into the match. After the match, Orton made his way towards Rollins in the ring, but was briefly interrupted by Jamie Noble who got an RKO for his troubles. Then Orton, much to Rollins' surprise, picked him up and only patted him on the shoulder, leaving his alignment at the time in question. On the March 9 edition of Raw, Orton insulted several members of The Authority, only to pass it off as a joke. During a 2-on-1 handicap match in which he teamed with Seth Rollins against Roman Reigns, he abandoned Rollins, allowing Reigns to get the victory. Following this, Orton viciously beat Rollins, eventually executing an RKO through the broadcast table.

A match between the two was made official for WrestleMania 31 on the condition that Orton would meet Rollins later on that same night in the ring. The bout never took place as every member of The Authority made their way to the ring to attack Orton. Their attempt to avenge Rollins was thwarted by Sting, who aided Orton in holding them off. Orton defeated Rollins at the event. After the loss, Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank contract to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in the main event. With Rollins as the new champion, Orton defeated Roman Reigns and Ryback in a triple threat match on the April 6 episode of Raw to become the #1 contender to face Rollins at Extreme Rules, but he failed to win the title from Rollins in a steel cage match that saw per the stipulation his RKO banned and Kane as the gatekeeper.

At Payback, Orton failed to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship when he was defeated by Rollins in a fatal four-way match that also included Dean Ambrose and Reigns.

WWE Money in the Bank 2024 results: Winners, highlights, analysis

Who captured the championship opportunity of a lifetime?

WWE Money in the Bank , one of the biggest premium live events on the wrestling company’s calendar, took place Saturday in Toronto, and it was a chaotic, thrilling night. The event was headlined by the men's and women's Money in the Bank matches, where the winner of each match would earn a contract for a championship opportunity at any point in the next year. One winner tried to cash their briefcase in and it ended in wild fashion.

Three other matches also took place Saturday night. The World Heavyweight and Intercontinental Championships were on the line, and there was a shocking ending in the next chapter of the rivalry between Cody Rhodes and The Bloodline in a six-man tag-team match.

Here's a recap of all the action from Toronto:

Drew McIntyre unleashes frustrations on post-show

Losing the World Heavyweight Championship because of CM Punk again is not sitting well with the 2024 Men's Money in the Bank winner.

After the conclusion of Money in the Bank, McIntyre took over the post show and assaulted the referees and Raw general manager Adam Pierce as they tried to stop him. It took Wade Barrett to get McIntyre out of the way.

OH NO! @DMcIntyreWWE just LOST IT and decked #WWERaw General Manager @ScrapDaddyAP ! pic.twitter.com/J4ytKyOzvv — WWE (@WWE) July 7, 2024

Cody Rhodes, Kevin Owens and Randy Orton vs. The Bloodline

Kevin Owens has dealt with every iteration of The Bloodline, and he let his frustrations out with a frenzy attack on Tama Tonga before allowing Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton to do the same thing. WWE got its first taste of Jacob Fatu in competition, and he showed why he is regarded as one of the most intense wrestlers in the world, recovering from vintage Orton quickly and taking apart "The Viper" and setting his family up to launch an offensive attack.

Orton was able to get Owens in so he could continue his frenzy, but The Bloodline was able to neutralize him this time around. Owens got the majority of the beating and there were several times he tried to get a tag before The Bloodline would get in the way and punish him more. Owens eventually got Rhodes in and that's when he teed off on Solo Sikoa. The champion took his eyes off Sikoa by targeting the rest of the faction, which gave Sikoa enough time to land a spear on Rhodes. He went for the pin and Rhodes kicked out.

Sikoa inadvertently took the referee out and Rhodes, Owens and Orton all hit signature moves on Sikoa. The match erupted in chaos, including Owens sending Fatu through the announcer's table. The action got brought into the ring, and when Rhodes went for three CrossRhodes on Sikoa, Fatu got up and took the champion out. He set up the new "Tribal Chief" with a Samoan spike. The referee was dragged into the ring for the count and Sikoa got the pin on the champion for the win for The Bloodline in its first major victory in its new era.

Analysis: The Bloodline is asserting itself back on top of WWE, and it has made a statement. The Bloodline needed to win on Saturday more than its opponents if it wanted to be seen as a legitimate new version of this dominant faction. Jacob Fatu's debut was incredible and showed why there is so much hype surrounding him. For Sikoa to get the pin on Rhodes, he absolutely earned a shot at the Undisputed WWE Championship. Roman Reigns isn't back and who knows if or when he'll be back, but The Bloodline is doing just fine with its new "Tribal Chief."

  • Women's Money in the Bank match

It was clear Chelsea Green was the crowd favorite after the pop on her entrance and Samantha Irvin’s signature announcement. Green also got the match started with a laugh by trying to jump to get the briefcase once the match started.

Each star got their own chance to shine, like when Zoey Stark utilized the ladder in several ways to punish Lyra Valkyria and Tiffany Stratton launched herself off the top turnbuckle and took out other stars. It took time for someone to climb up and make an attempt to grab the briefcase, and once Valkyria was the first to do so, all stars then duked to get on the ladder. After back-and-forth blows using the ladder, Naomi was standing alone ready to grab the briefcase, only for Green to emerge to stop the threat and hit her opponent's face off the ladder. Last year's winner Iyo Sky and Stark met at the top of the ladder and Sky delivered a wicked piledriver onto the perpendicular ladder.

It's COMPLETE CHAOS!!! #MITB pic.twitter.com/4HayTgVCSZ — WWE (@WWE) July 7, 2024

Green was open and just when she grabbed the briefcase, Stratton came out and not only shook the ladder, knocked Green off and into the tables out of the ring in a hard-hitting spot. Stratton was left alone, and she grabbed the briefcase to become Ms. Money in the Bank.

TIFFY in the BANK! #MITB pic.twitter.com/9A73VpD8T0 — WWE (@WWE) July 7, 2024

Analysis: What a spectacular match. The women laid it all on the line and deserve major props for the wild bumps they had. The creativity was among the best in recent Money in the Bank match memory and raised the bar for how good it can be.

Stratton had a quick rise on the main roster, but it looked like it wasn't going to amount to much and she would be a flash in the pan. Instead, Money in the Bank is on "Tiffy Time," and it's a great move for WWE to put another woman's star in the conversation as one of the faces of the brand. There is a reason she's already won over the crowd; she can talk and she backs it up in the ring. The Women's Money in the Bank winner has always ended up as a champion, and it looked like Stratton is not far from having gold around her waist.

  • World Heavyweight Championship match: Damian Priest (c) vs. Seth Rollins

Drew McIntyre's threat of cashing in his Money in the Bank contract on Saturday loomed large in the championship match. Both stars had a sense of urgency to get the match over and get out of the arena as quickly as possible.

With Damian Priest and Seth Rollins on high alert, they each tried to land big strike after big strike in a match that was never slow. Rollins and Priest traded powerbombs, then had a sequence of kicks to each other. Rollins landed his patented curb-stomp and went for the pin but Priest kicked out. The champion went for his own knockout move with his razor-edge, ending in the same result: Rollins getting out of the pin. There was a confusing moment when Rollins hit the falcon's arrow and went for the pin on Priest, and even though it didn't look like Priest kicked out, the referee didn't count to three.

McIntyre then came out and cashed his Money in the Bank contract, making it a triple-threat match. McIntyre went for the claymore kick on Rollins to take the title, but Priest came out to clothesline him.

HE'S CASHING IN RIGHT NOW!!! #MITB pic.twitter.com/voWZxpecFl — WWE (@WWE) July 7, 2024

Then just like at Clash at the Castle, CM Punk emerged and unleashed a relentless assault on McIntyre, hitting him with a chair and choking him out with a cable. Punk took the championship title and knocked McIntyre out with it. Priest delivered a choke-slam to McIntyre to retain his title.

Punk has cost McIntyre again by wasting his contract, and he also cost Rollins from chasing the title as long as Priest is champion.

CM PUNK is back!!! #MITB pic.twitter.com/Tmak4iCqOk — WWE (@WWE) July 7, 2024

Analysis: The CM Punk-Drew McIntyre rivalry continues to deliver. Fans knew neither Priest nor Rollins was going to win this match without the 2024 Men's Money in the Bank winner getting in the fold. Punk's interference was his most ruthless assault on McIntyre yet, surely sending a message he is close to officially competing in the ring. The match didn't really set the next steps for Priest and his championship, and the botched pin spoiled it, but Punk and McIntyre are one step closer to finally getting a match and putting on a banger in the ring.

John Cena surprises

There is something about Money in the Bank and John Cena.

Trish Stratus announced a surprise guest on Saturday: 16-time WWE Champion Cena. His music hit and the crowd erupted, making another entrance like he did at Money in the Bank 2021.

Cena then revealed he will retire from WWE in 2025, and it appears WrestleMania 41 will be his last match.

The GREATEST OF ALL TIME is here! JOHN CENA is back at #MITB ! pic.twitter.com/anW4GdtC8l — WWE (@WWE) July 7, 2024
  • Intercontinental Championship match: Sami Zayn (c) vs. Bron Breakker

Sami Zayn had the home-country advantage, but Bron Breakker wasn't fazed, going quickly after the champion. However, Zayn isn't just some squash opponent; he has finesse and is one of the smartest wrestlers in the company, and he showed he wouldn't go down easy, taking some shots that seemed to surprise the challenger.

There were spots where Breakker would deliver one of his signature hard-hitting counters to get on offense, including a Franken-steiner to Zayn off the top rope. Breakker had words for Zayn after he kicked out and they went outside of the ring. Breakker tried to do his top-speed spear around the ring, only for Zayn to jump over. Breakker didn't run into the steel steps, so he had time to recover, get onto the mat and deliver a flying clothesline to Zayn off the announcer's table.

Breakker had the opening and went for the final blow. Zayn got out of the way and clipped him. With the challenger hanging off the turnbuckle, Zayn delivered a massive kick, knocking Breakker out and getting the pin to retain the title.

Analysis: Anyone could have made the case for either star to win, but it made sense for Breakker to get his first big push now. He has unlimited potential and a win would have launched his career to new heights. Zayn is the ideal champion who can compete with anybody on the roster and won't go down easily.

While Breakker was able to showcase his power and speed, he learned his opponents aren't just going to be out in seconds. It takes skill to win, and it'll be something for him to work on as he works his way up to the top. Don't be surprised if this isn't the only meeting between the two.

  • Men's Money in the Bank match

The chaos started as soon as the bell rang, and Drew McIntyre emerged as the first person to attempt to grab the briefcase, only for the quick ending to be spoiled by Chad Gable and Andrade. "El Idolo" then did an impressive Spanish fly to Hayes and onto the ladder. The crowd was clearly loving the energy.

It's absolutely wild in the Men's #MITB Ladder Match! pic.twitter.com/CwE5mLFoHm — WWE (@WWE) July 6, 2024

LA Knight and Jey Uso were the fan favorites and traded barbs at the top of the ladder, with the crowd chanting "yeet" and "yeah" with every blow. Hayes disrupted the moment and had a chance to grab the ladder, only to again be taken out by Andrade. Andrade then delivered an insane sunset flip power bomb to Hayes onto the ladder. Moments later, Gable launched LA Knight out of the ring and to a ladder out of the ring.

Gable went to get the briefcase, but Uso moved the ladder, leaving Gable hanging off the briefcase. He couldn't grab it and fell face-first onto the mat. Uso had a prime chance to win, only for McIntyre to hit Uso with a ladder. It knocked him off, and McIntyre was all by himself. He climbed the ladder and grabbed the briefcase to secure his championship opportunity.

MCINTYRE IN THE BANK #MITB pic.twitter.com/K8hPJhiZgh — WWE (@WWE) July 6, 2024

Analysis: There were plenty of spots to create some stunning moves that a Money in the Bank match is expected to have. It was easy to tell there were only three contenders who really had a chance to win, and while it was expected, McIntyre's victory makes sense given he has the best story going right now since WrestleMania.

Triple H: ‘Few surprises in the tank’ for Money in the Bank

Will there be a shocking ending or dramatic return on Saturday night?

Ahead of Money in the Bank, WWE chief content officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque dropped a hint that fans may get something extra during the premium live event.

“Got a few surprises in the tank. So, it’s going to be a fun night,” Levesque said on social media .

World Heavyweight Championship match stipulation

There will be some high stakes in the World Heavyweight Championship match between Damian Priest and Seth Rollins. If Rollins wins, then Priest must leave The Judgment Day, but if Priest wins, then Rollins cannot challenge for the title as long as Priest remains champion.

Why Bron Breakker can become WWE’s next superstar

Cody Rhodes says prior to his entrance music “Wrestling has more than one royal family,” and while it’s true, there’s another WWE star making a solid case for his family to be in the picture.

Son of Rick Steiner and nephew of Scott Steiner – both WWE Hall of Famers – Bron Breakker has exploded onto the scene ever since he arrived at the company in 2021. He won the NXT Championship twice and the NXT Tag Team Championship, and since his callup to the main roster, he’s become someone with unlimited potential. He’s been nothing but dominant since his arrival, and he’ll have the biggest match of his young career Saturday when he challenges Sami Zayn for the Intercontinental Championship during WWE's 2024 Money in The Bank event.

So even though he isn’t exactly a “genetic freak” like his uncle, Breakker has proven there is no star like him.

“With what I'm doing, I'm not so sure anyone's ever done it before,” Breakker told USA TODAY Sports.

Read more about Bron Breakker here .

Who is in The Bloodline?

This isn’t the same version of The Bloodline WWE fans got used to seeing just a few months ago.

Roman Reigns hasn’t been seen since he lost the Undisputed Universal Championship at WrestleMania 40, and taking his place is Solo Sikoa, who was previously appointed the Tribal Chief in-waiting. He’s brought on some more family too, first bringing in Tama Tonga in April. At Backlash France, Tonga’s brother Tanga Loa debuted. Lastly, Jacob Fatu joined the faction in June.
