The PhD Programme’s distinctive topic is the relationship between sport, health and well-being in its unitary complexity. Such relationship defines a research field with both a strongly cohesive content and an intrinsic openness to multi-and inter-disciplinary approaches. This general theme is articulated in the following three areas:

• Physical activity, nutrition and drugs for well-being promotion and health protection : determinants and benefits of a healthy lifestyle; exercise for special populations; research and development of drugs for health protection; biomarkers’ analysis for monitoring the well-being status; metabolism and nutrition.
• Sport performance : multi- and inter-disciplinary investigation of the factors determining human performance in sport and other activities that push humans to the limits of their physical and mental capacity; analysis, development and learning of sports techniques; monitoring and optimization of the training process; preparation for sports competitions.
• Sport as a means to education and sustainable development : analysis of the values conveyed by sport to promote social inclusion, environmental sustainability, and global citizenship; teaching and learning of culture in childhood, in relation to movement and the human body; good practices for starting and practicing grassroot sports; education to the factors of individual and social well-being in the current reality; role of the context in promoting human development.

The various research topics will be developed by stressing those “soft-skills” components that allow to locate rigorous disciplinary investigations exactly into the horizon where, today, extremely useful answers for the promotion of sport, health, and well-being can emerge.

To develop a solid research training in the field of health and sport sciences through the progress of knowledge and methodologies in the following areas: integrated strategies for health promotion; research and development of drugs and natural and synthetic compounds for health protection; physical activity and sports science; outdoor educational activities. The PhD program, within a multi- and inter-disciplinary perspective, intends to promote collaborations with national and international research groups and organizations operating in the field of health, physical activity, sports science, and outdoor education. Our educational goals are to increase knowledge, skills and experience in the aforementioned areas; provide in-depth knowledge of the phenomena related to sport, physical activity, and health protection of individuals and populations; train students to plan and accomplish original projects inspired by the principles of the hypothesis-driven and evidence-based research

PhD students are expected to carry out activities at different levels. These mandatory activities principally consist of a scientific part devoted to research, and of an educational part. The core action is to develop autonomously a research project selected within the topics provided by the Doctoral Program, under the supervision of a tutor and the support of the Doctorate Council. All this will promote the candidate’s organizational skills and the ability to develop empirical and/or theoretical research. Since the Doctoral Program is designed to afford a trans-disciplinary exploration of the nexus among sport, health, and well-being, the didactical part will consist of courses designed for all doctoral candidates (mainly focused on “soft skills” – strategic for the PhD theme – such as relational skills, team working and problem solving, that will be the subject of multi-disciplinary seminars), of seminars and of courses both specialized and common to each macro-area. These will become highly optional and with a more specific disciplinary feature (according to each candidate profile) starting from the second year, when a research period abroad will be compulsory. PhD students will periodically present the state of the art of their research during regular meetings with the Doctorate Council, which can then assess the work done. Moreover, PhD students will be allowed to carry out a limited integrative teaching activity in official courses of the University of Bologna.

At the beginning of the course, to each PhD student will be assigned a research project consistent with his/her corresponding discipline and topic. The doctoral training activities will hence offer Doctoral candidates: - basic activities (to which all candidates are expected to attend) focused on cross-methodological topics (academic writing workshops, bibliographical research seminars, seminars on knowledge transfer valorization); - specific activities for the chosen disciplinary field aimed at acquiring skills and rigorous knowledge on research methodologies which are needed for the development of each research project. In addition, PhD students will attend lectures and seminars held by prominent national and international scholars; where needed, courses chosen between those offered in University Degree Programs or Second-level University Masters may also be attended. During the third year, the PhD student will focus on the preparation of a final, written dissertation, while supervised by his/her own tutor, who will constantly be part of the research training process. The PhD student will learn how to deal with informatics tools which are useful for the development of his/her own research; how to perform bibliographic and data base research, data analysis; how to develop laboratory techniques and methodologies, critical and interpretive attitude, papers and research projects. In order to increasingly acquire extensive abilities and skills and keep abreast of their specific research subjects, PhD students will attend each side activity that the Doctorate Council deems relevant to their specific methodological training on the Doctoral Program’s topics. Moreover, PhD students are expected to participate to symposia that are consistent with the Doctoral Program’s topics, where they can present and discuss their work both in national and international frameworks.

An official memorandum was stipulated with the University of Lleida (Spain), which agrees on the possibility of a joint PhD degree. Numerous international collaborations and Erasmus exchange Programs, which connote the Doctorate Council’s activity already, ensure PhD students the opportunity to be hosted in foreign institutions and hence to develop their theses in cotutelle with the latter. It is mandatory for PhD students to spend at least a trimester in foreign universities or research institutes, with the Doctorate Council’s authorization. Hosting institutions will be first of all those with which the members of the Council have already established international collaborations and which represent an increasingly developing network. During the research period abroad, the PhD students will have the opportunity to learn innovative methodologies of research. In the framework of international agreements (i.e., Erasmus Mundus), foreign PhD students will have the opportunity to spend a research period in the laboratories of the Department for Life Quality Studies in collaboration with its Academic Staff. Thanks to the originality of its trans-disciplinary feature, the Program is likely to attract foreign students, who may be funded with scholarships by their own country or in the framework of international or European exchange Programs. The collaboration of foreign students may also promote international research networks on a larger scale, by pursuing further relationships with different institutions. In order to develop the Program’s international profile, research paths that involve exchange and cotutelles with foreign institutions will be encouraged. To this end, agreements with European and Extra-European universities will be incentivized.

The Doctoral Program is an expression of the different disciplines and skills that connote the Department of Quality Life Studies - University of Bologna. For this reason, the result of the research activity, also oriented in terms of interdisciplinary activities, train the PhD students to the production of original studies to be published both in international scientific journals and as books, papers and Conference Proceedings (national and international) in order to integrate PhD students within the community of their specific disciplines. Finally, it is desirable, for some research fields, the development of patents.

About 40 junior researchers yearly receive their Ph.D. at the German Sport University in the diverse disciplines of sport science.

The German Sport University (GSU) confers the academic degree Ph.D. following the successful completion of the Ph.D. studies, a scientific dissertation and an oral examination.

As a Ph.D. student you merely pay the semester fees amounting to approx. 330€ per semester. No further funding is provided by the German Sport University. You can find more information about costs and financing here .

Doctoral degrees.

The University of Idaho awards the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in recognition of high achievement in scholarly and research activity. The degree of Doctor of Education is granted for high scholarly attainment and in recognition of the completion of academic preparation for professional practice. See the "Ph.D. and Ed.D. Procedures" tab for more details. The Doctor of Athletic Training is offered through the College of Education and the Department of Movement Sciences (see the "DAT Procedures" tab for more details).

The major professor and program offering a particular doctoral program indicate the general philosophy of the degree program, the objectives of courses and seminars, the research specialties available, and requirements unique to the department. Admission to the doctoral program is granted only to those who have a recognized potential for completing the degree.

Requirements for Doctoral Degrees

Credit requirements.

For the Ph.D. and Ed.D., a minimum of 78 credits beyond the bachelor's degree is required.; At least 52 credits must be at the 500 level or above and at least 33 of the 78 credits must be in courses other than 600 (Doctoral Research and Dissertation). A maximum of 45 research credits in 600 (Doctoral Research and Dissertation) including 6 credits of 599 (Non-thesis Research) or 500 (Master's Research and Thesis) may be in the 45 research credits used toward the degree. For the D.A.T., a minimum of 66 credits is required and follows a prescribed set of courses set by the program.

Courses numbered below 300 may not be used to fulfill the requirements for a doctoral degree; courses numbered 300-399 may be used only in supporting areas and are not to be used to make up deficiencies. Individual programs may require additional course work. Applicants having a doctoral degree may obtain a second doctoral degree subject to the approval of the Graduate Council. The Graduate Council will establish the requirements for the second degree.

Credit Limitations for Transfer, Correspondence Study, and Non-degree

For the Ph.D. and Ed.D. degrees, a student must complete at least 39 of the 78 required credits at the University of Idaho (U of I) while matriculated in the College of Graduate Studies. Credits can be transferred to U of I with the consent of the student's major professor, the committee (if required by the program), the program's administrator, and the dean of the College of Graduate Studies. Credits can be transferred only if the institution from which the credits are being transferred has a graduate program in the course's discipline. All credits used toward graduate degrees must be from regionally accredited American institutions or from non-US institutions recognized by the appropriate authorities in their respective countries. Transfer credits are subject to all other College of Graduate Studies rules and regulations. Correspondence study courses may be applied to the degree only with the prior written approval of the College of Graduate Studies. Courses used toward an undergraduate degree, professional development courses, and courses on a professional development transcript are not available to be used toward a doctoral degree.

Time Limits

Of the credits submitted to satisfy the requirements for a Ph.D. or Ed.D. degree, a maximum of 30 may be more than eight years old when the degree is conferred, provided the student's committee and program administrator determine that the student has kept current in the subjects concerned. Graduation must occur no later than five years after the date on which the candidate passed their preliminary or general examination. These time limitations can be extended only on recommendation of the committee and approval by the Graduate Council.

Awarding Doctoral Degrees to Members of the Faculty

Regulations are outlined in Section 4920 of the Faculty-Staff Handbook.

Particular Requirements for the Ed.D. Degree

A period of professional practice is required for the Doctor of Education degree; the period involved is determined by the student's supervisory committee. While the Ed.D. is a College of Education degree, you should consult with the departments in the College of Education to learn of specific emphasis requirements.

Procedures for Doctor of Philosophy and Doctor of Education Degrees

Appointment of major professor and committee.

Refer to " Appointment of Major Professor and Committee for All Degree Seeking Graduate Students " in the preceding General Graduate Regulations section. In addition, a doctoral supervisory committee consists of at least four people: the major professor as chair and at least one additional UI faculty member from the program, the balance of the committee may be made up of faculty members from a minor or supporting area, and faculty members from a discipline outside the major. If the committee has a co-chair, the minimum number of committee members is five.

Qualifying Examination

The qualifying examination is a program option and serves to assess the background of the student in both the major and supporting fields and to provide partially the basis for preparation of the student's study program. A particular program may or may not require a master's degree as a prerequisite for the qualifying evaluation. As soon as the program's qualifications are met, a supervisory committee is appointed.

Preparation of Study Plan

Refer to " Preparation and Submission of Study Plan " in the preceding General Graduate Regulations section.

Preliminary Examination for Ph.D. Degree

The preliminary examination should be scheduled only after the student has completed the majority of the courses on their study plan. The student is required to be registered during the semester the preliminary examination is taken. The student's committee certifies to the College of Graduate Studies the results of the preliminary examination and if passed, the student is advanced to candidacy. Graduation must occur no later than five years after the date on which the candidate passed their examination. If the preliminary examination is failed, it may be repeated only once; the repeat examination must be taken within a period of not less than three months or more than one year following the first attempt. If a student fails the preliminary examination a second time, or the program does not allow the student to repeat the examination after the first failure or the student does not retake the examination within one year, the student is automatically moved to unclassified enrollment status and is no longer in the degree program.

General Examination for Ed.D . Degree

When the student approaches the end of their course work, has completed the professional experience requirement, and has outlined the dissertation subject in detail, the supervisory committee approves the holding of the general examination. The student is required to be registered during the semester the general examination is taken. The examination is both written and oral and is intended to assess progress toward degree objectives. The student's committee certifies to the College of Graduate Studies the results of the general examination and if passed, the student is advanced to candidacy. Graduation must occur no later than five years after the date on which the candidate passed their examination. If the general examination is failed, it may be repeated only once; the repeat examination must be taken within a period of not less than three months or more than one year following the first attempt. If a student fails the general examination a second time, or the program does not allow the student to repeat the examination after the first failure or the student does not retake the examination within one year, the student is automatically moved to unclassified status and is no longer in the degree program.

Procedures for Doctor of Athletic Training

The culminating clinical project.

Students enrolled in the Doctor of Athletic Training (D.A.T.) will engage in research projects during the curricular phase of the program. These project(s) will lead to at least two publication ready manuscripts, and all students must meet professional authorship requirements (regardless of order). See the  Department of Movement Sciences and Doctor of Athletic Training webpages for more information.

The Team (Committee)

All D.A.T. project team committees will have at least four committee members: two members of the athletic training faculty (all with graduate faculty status), the student's attending clinician (who is the student's on-site mentor during the student's residency), and an expert in the student's chosen area of clinical research. The athletic training faculty members will always chair the CCP, provide research guidance, and serve as the experts in the development of advanced practice in Athletic Training. A situation may arise in which one or both of the members of the committee that are outside of the AT program faculty may have a degree less than that of which the student is seeking; however, the intent of the third and fourth D.A.T. committee membership is to provide outside validation of the student's progress toward advanced practice and clinical utility of action research studies.

Culminating Clinical Project Hours

These dissertation hours may be used in instances when the CCP has not been successfully completed and the curricular phase of program has been completed.

• Degree Prep

Prospective students must have completed the pre-requisite coursework in order to be eligible to apply to the MSAT program.

Current or prospective University of Idaho students should inquire about the 3 + 2 option. This allows undergraduate students to major in Exercise, Sport, and Health Sciences in the Pre-Athletic Training track for the first three years at the University of Idaho (or a partner institution) and then begin the MSAT program. Students complete their undergraduate and graduate coursework in a total of 5 years.

The MSAT program is an intensive program that includes a clinical immersion model. All students are required to complete a minimum cumulative total of 900 clinical education hours under the direct supervision of a certified athletic trainer during the two-year program. 

Students complete a variety of clinical rotations that will help them prepare for the ever-changing health care market and give them skills necessary to achieve their individual and unique career aspirations. Clinical experiences are offered during the fall and spring semesters at affiliate sites around the country.

Athletic Trainers are health care professionals who collaborate with physicians and other health professionals to optimize patient care, client activity and participation in athletics, work and life. The practice of athletic training encompasses the prevention, examination, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of chronic and acute medical conditions. Students complete their undergraduate degree in Exercise, Sport, and Health Sciences and begin their M.S.A.T. as seniors.

Thomas Raymond Tregaskes 1950-2024

YOUNGSTOWN — Thomas “Tommy” Raymond Tregaskes, 73, died Thursday evening, July 11, 2024, at St. Elizabeth Hospital.

He was born Dec. 20, 1950, in Yatesboro, Pa., a son of Richard and Alene Guffey Tregaskes.

Tommy, a 1969 graduate of Girard High School, was a maintenance worker at Goodwill Industries. He enjoyed fixing cars and trucks and working on model trains.

Tommy leaves two brothers, Henry of Liberty and Donald and his wife Beth of North Carolina; four sisters, Barbara Cataline and her husband Jeff of Hubbard, Jackie Yakopec and her husband Michael of McDonald, Paula Tregaskes of Liberty and Odessa Hershberger of Warren. He also leaves many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Carol Tregaskes; a niece, Jessica Hershberger; and a nephew, Spike Cataline.

Family and friends may call from 3 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at the Kelley-Cummins Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 4 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Mike Alger officiating.

Tommy’s final resting place will be in Hubbard Union Cemetery.

Iowa alum credits storytelling skills to her success as a yogi podcaster.

University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences graduate Lily Allen-Dueñas (13BA), a business owner and entrepreneur, says her time at Iowa gave her the skill to help her launch an online yoga business and podcast — which has taken her all over the world.  

Allen-Dueñas is an international yoga teacher and holistic healer. Her passion for yoga led her to leave her marketing desk job and pursue a yoga teaching training course in Nepal. From there, her international yoga adventure began, landing her in surf hostels in Sri Lanka, hotels in Bali, and wellness centers in the Philippines — all to teach yoga.  

During the height of the pandemic, she expanded her online yoga and wellness offerings, which include personalized coaching, vegan meal planning, and retreats. But also, notably, launched her Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast to share stories about the benefits of yoga from different perspectives around the world.  

Her first episode dropped in June 2021 and has consistently aired since.  

“The Wild Yoga Tribe is about the stories, methodologies, and philosophies of yoga and the profound impact that comes from fostering community, collaboration, and connection through yoga,” Allen-Dueñas says. 

Iowa is known as “The Writing University” largely because of its world-renowned graduate programs, housed in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, including the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and the Nonfiction Writing Program. The university is also committed to helping all students build strong writing and communication skills across campus and in every field of study. 

Graduating in 2013 with a degree in English, she was also selected to speak during the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences’ commencement ceremony — a high honor that accompanies a competitive audition and is reserved for those graduating with honors. 

“My classes and courses in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences gave me an abundance of skills, not just in writing, but also in thoughtfulness, the impact of each word you choose, and how to be confident speaking in front of large crowds,” she adds. 

Allen-Dueñas says as a liberal arts student, she received a well-rounded education that taught her skills necessary for her to be a successful business owner and storyteller.  

“The University of Iowa taught me the importance of effective marketing, leadership, and continuous learning, all of which have been instrumental in my entrepreneurial journey,” Allen-Dueñas adds. 

As a loyal Hawkeye, Allen-Dueñas is still connected to campus and her past professors.  

“I don’t think a year has gone by and I haven’t sent an email to someone who works at the University of Iowa to ask a question, seek a resource, or seek advice,” she says. “The UI is still there to support you, even after you graduate.”  

Allen-Dueñas is back in Iowa operating her business, which includes recording and releasing more than 100 podcast episodes and interviewing more than 100 yoga instructors from 100 different countries.  

“Through these episodes, I've traveled the world, exploring the diverse perspectives and experiences of yoga teachers. Each conversation has been a unique exploration of what yoga means to individuals from various cultures, backgrounds, and traditions,” Allen-Dueñas explains.

Hyde to take reins for penn state extension.

UNIVERSITY PARK — Jeffrey Hyde, most recently a professor and administrator at Texas A&M University, has returned to Pennsylvania to become director of Penn State Extension and associate dean in the College of Agricultural Sciences. He started in his new role April 25.

Hyde takes the reins from Katherine Cason, professor of food science and former associate director of extension, who had been the interim director since June 2023. As director, Hyde will oversee program planning; budget, facilities and human resource management; and government, industry and constituent relations. He directs an organization with a statewide presence and about 200 county-based educators.

Hyde is no stranger to Penn State. He joined the faculty in the College of Agricultural Sciences in 2000 as an assistant professor of agricultural economics, reaching the rank of full professor in 2012. During that time, he developed and delivered extension educational programs on topics such as farm business planning, marketing and human resource management. From 2008 to 2015, he led Penn State Extension’s statewide ag entrepreneurship and economic/community development programs.

Hyde also served as associate head of the college’s Department of Agricultural Economics, Sociology, and Education and as assistant to the director for special initiatives for Penn State Extension. In 2017, he was named associate extension director for programs, a role in which he provided leadership for the development and delivery of high-quality, relevant and impactful extension educational programs, products and services through a variety of formats, with an eye toward expanding reach and access.

What can you do with a bachelor’s in psychology?

Psychology ranked among the most popular undergraduate majors in the US in 2021 [ 1 ]. Since the Bachelor of Psychology serves as a generalist degree (it doesn’t specifically qualify you for a given job), it’s a good choice if you’d like to explore your interests while keeping your career options open. While broadly applicable, the knowledge and skills you develop as a psychology major may be particularly useful in these industries.

1. Counseling

Counselors help people suffering from addiction and other behavioral disorders by offering treatment and advice. You might work in a community health center, juvenile detention facility, employee assistance program, or detox center, depending on your specialty.

How to get started in counseling: Requirements vary by state, but it’s possible to get started as a substance abuse or behavioral health counselor with a bachelor’s degree. Some states require certification and licensure. Check with your state’s regulating board for specific educational requirements.  

2. Social services

Knowledge of human behavior, motivations, interviewing, and data analysis —skills common in psychology degree programs—translate well into the field of social work. Help people cope with the struggles of their everyday lives in a role as a case manager , social services assistant, or child welfare specialist. 

How to get started in social work: While a bachelor’s degree in social work is the most common requirement for entry-level administrative roles, many employers also consider applicants with a psychology or sociology degree. If you decide you want to further your career in social work, consider going to graduate school for social work (a requirement for licensure as a social worker).

3. Education

Aside from teaching, educators are often tasked with encouraging and empathizing with students, handling misbehavior, and intervening in cases of mental health issues. A background in psychology can help day-to-day in the classroom from pre-K to high school.

How to get started in education: Teachers at every grade level typically need at least a bachelor’s degree. If you’d like to teach in a public school, you’ll need to get licensed or certified from your state as well. Complement your psychology coursework by enrolling in a teacher preparation program. 

4. Human resources

Human resource (HR) professionals oversee much of the employee lifecycle. In this role, you’ll be tasked with making hiring and firing decisions, managing disputes, and promoting employee welfare. An understanding of how people think can boost your effectiveness across all these areas.

How to get started in HR: Most entry-level HR positions require a bachelor’s degree. Supplement your psychology degree coursework by taking classes in business, management, and accounting. Boost your resume with a certification from the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) or the HR Certification Institute (HRCI).

5. Marketing and advertising

Selling a product or service often means tapping into the deep desires of the target customer base. The science of persuasion, part of the greater study of social psychology, plays a significant role in effective advertisements and marketing campaigns.

How to get started in marketing and advertising: Many companies prefer at least a bachelor’s degree for roles in marketing and advertising. While your psychology coursework can help you evaluate consumer behavior, consider taking classes in market research, sales, or communications as well. Entry-level jobs in sales and public relations can serve as an entryway into this field.

6. User experience (UX) design

As a UX designer , you can use your knowledge of how people think to help create solutions to common, everyday problems. UX focuses on how people interact with products and systems. By analyzing people’s needs and frustrations, you can design solutions that make products (including apps and websites) easier to use.

How to get started in UX design: You’ll find multiple paths to a career in UX design (and a psychology degree is a good start). If you’re interested in this emerging field, take some courses in human factor psychology, design, and research methodology. Consider an internship while you’re in school to begin building a portfolio of work.

7. Criminal justice

Many aspects of criminal justice deal with understanding human behavior, from why criminals commit crimes to how these crimes impact victims. A career in law enforcement and criminal justice might take the form of case management, victim advocacy, or working as a parole or probation officer. 

How to get started in criminal justice: Most roles in law enforcement require completing a state or federal training program and certification test. If you’re considering a career in criminal justice, prepare with courses on criminal psychology, addiction, abnormal behavior, and behavioral statistics.

Graduate psychology degree jobs: 5 careers in psychology

Psychology graduates often go on to earn a higher-level psychology degree as the first step toward becoming a professional psychologist. In most states, you’ll have to get licensed to call yourself a psychologist. Licensure requirements generally include a master’s or PhD in psychology. As you pursue a higher education degree, consider these fields as possible specialties.

1. Clinical psychology

Clinical psychologists provide behavioral and mental health care for individuals and families. In this field, you’ll provide clinical or counseling services to help treat a range of emotional, mental, and behavioral disorders. Clinical psychology is one of the largest specialties in the field and what most people think of when they think “psychologist.”

In most states, working as a clinical psychologist requires earning a doctorate in psychology and one or two years of supervised clinical experience, as well as passing the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology.

2. Forensic psychology

Forensic psychologists use their knowledge of human behavior in several ways within the criminal justice system. Working in this field might involve developing criminal psychological profiles, providing testimony in court, assessing witness credibility, or determining whether a defendant is mentally competent to stand trial.

Practicing forensic psychologists need a doctoral degree in most states, though a Master of Psychology might qualify you for research-related roles.

3. Industrial organizational psychology

Industrial organizational psychologists (also known as I/O psychologists) focus on human behavior of employees in the workplace. 4. Sports & exercise psychology

Sports psychologists use their knowledge of human behavior to assist athletes in achieving maximum performance and treat mental health issues specific to the sports industry. You might work with a variety of athletes, from youth and parents in recreational programs to Olympic and pro athletes (and their coaches).

In most cases, you’ll need a doctoral degree in psychology and a license to practice as a sports psychologist. Some graduate programs offer a sports psychology concentration. Alternatively, you can consider a double major in psychology and exercise science .

5. Educational psychology

Working as an educational psychologist means studying how we learn and retain knowledge. As a psychologist in this field, you’ll study various approaches to learning and develop approaches to make learning more effective. This might include testing methods, classroom environments, learning disabilities, and behavioral issues that could impede the learning process.

While a Master of Psychology is the minimum requirement for a career in educational psychology, you should consider earning your PhD to boost your opportunities in this research-heavy field.

Hockey dreams: marquette senior high school graduate troy anderson’s nhl social media work includes ice level at stanley cup final.

His story is a testament to how passion and creativity can carve out a unique career path.

Today, he works as a live social contributor for the National Hockey League and the National Football League, capturing moments like Stanley Cup Final and NFL training camps, blending his passion for sports with his media skills.

Anderson’s early love for hockey is rooted in his childhood, where he played on various outdoor rinks around town.

“I started with house league hockey around age 7 or 8,” he said. “Eventually, I played for Marquette Senior High School in 2008-09.”

It was during these formative years that his interest in photography began to take shape.

“I started experimenting with my parents’ Sony camcorders,” he said.

This early experimentation laid the groundwork for what would become a significant aspect of his life.

After high school, Anderson’s path took him to Michigan State University, where he studied urban planning.

However, it was a study abroad trip to Cuba that rekindled his passion for photography.

“That trip was eye-opening,” Anderson said. “I rediscovered my love for capturing moments and telling stories through images.”

This realization led him to start a small media business during his college years, focusing on documentary filmmaking. One of his notable projects was documenting Clark Park in Detroit, a venture that significantly boosted his career.

His current work with the NHL brought him to the Miami area for the Florida Panthers’ home games in their Stanley Cup Final series against the Edmonton Oilers, including getting on the ice to take photos after the Panthers won the cup just a few weeks ago.

Anderson, 33, travels extensively during the NHL season, capturing pivotal moments and behind-the-scenes stories that define the sport’s rich culture. From the thrill of overtime goals to the quiet moments of reflection in locker rooms, Anderson’s lens offers fans an intimate view of the sport they cherish.

“Being able to document hockey history is something I take very seriously,” he said. “Growing up in Marquette, hockey was such a huge part of my life, and now I get to capture that for a wider audience.”

Despite his success away from his original home, he remains connected to Marquette, spending summers there and staying involved with Iron Fish Distillery, his family’s business.

“I love coming back to Marquette,” he said. “The natural beauty here and the community’s support have always been inspiring.”

His message is clear — careers in sports photography, media, video production and broadcast production are not only viable but rewarding.

“Marquette is a great place to cultivate these skills because of our natural beauty and the excellent media programs in our local schools, including (Northern Michigan University),” he said. “Marquette provided a solid foundation.”

He encourages aspiring photographers and media professionals, especially those from his hometown, to explore these career paths.

“There are numerous opportunities in sports photography, media, video production and broadcast production,” Anderson said. “If you have a passion for it, pursue it. Marquette is an excellent place to start.”

He encourages young people in Marquette to explore these fields as career options.

“I hope my experience shows kids in Marquette that it’s an option,” he said. “If you have a passion for it, pursue it. There are so many opportunities out there.”

As Anderson continues to document major sporting events and contribute to his family’s business, his journey from the ice rinks of Marquette to the professional arenas of the NHL and NFL can serve as an inspiration, reminding us that with passion and dedication, dreams can become reality.
