Finding a Doctoral Position

How do i find a place as a doctoral student.

Unlike at many other universities, the doctorate at ETH Zurich is not organised via an overarching doctoral school. ETH Zurich mainly offers individual doctorates. Each potential doctoral thesis supervisor recruits their doctoral students themselves. In order to be able to complete a doctorate at ETH, a professor at ETH must be willing to supervise your dissertation. With few exceptions, doctorates are linked to a position at ETH or within the ETH-domain. The best way to apply for a doctoral position is to contact the professorship you are interested in directly. To do so, visit the website of the department where you would like to do your doctorate and contact the professors you are considering directly.

Economic optimism rises as U.S. job market adds 206,000 jobs

Confidence in the economy is back up.

The unemployment rate rose slightly, but jobs grew by over 200,000.  ( iStock )

The U.S. job market is slowly stabilizing, as shown by the 206,000 jobs added in June, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics . The industries driving this growth include government, health care, social assistance and construction.

Although more jobs were added, unemployment did increase, but barely, to 4.1%. Last month, the unemployment rate sat at 4%, so the increase was minimal month to month. The unemployment rate is currently higher than it was last year, when the jobless rate was 3.6%.

Government jobs led the charge for job growth, adding 70,000 jobs in June. This is much higher than the average monthly gain of 49,000 government jobs the U.S. has seen in the last 12 months. Local governments and state governments added the most jobs over all at 34,000 and 26,000 respectively.

The health care industry also added a substantial number of jobs at 49,000. However, this is lower than the average monthly gain of 64,000 seen in the last year. Hospitals and ambulatory services added the most jobs in the industry, both increasing by 22,000.

Another public service sector, social assistance, added 34,000 jobs in June, mostly in individual family services. This addition is also larger than the average for the last 12 months, which was 22,000 additional jobs.

Construction jobs grew in June as well, with 27,000 new jobs. The industries that lost jobs were retail, dropping by 9,000 positions. Furniture retailers also lost about 6,000 jobs.

Wages for many industries are up across the board, on average. Over the last year, hourly wages have risen by 3.9%.

Consumer confidence on the rise after months in decline

The general consumer outlook for the economy is back on the rise after months of decline. The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index rose in May to 102, up from 97.5. A score of over 100 tends to signal a strong economy.

The Present Situation Index, which measures consumer opinions on current business market conditions, also increased. The index rose to 143.1 in May from 140.6 in April, indicating that there’s a more positive view of the current labor market.

"Consumers' assessment of current business conditions was slightly less positive than last month. However, the strong labor market continued to bolster consumers' overall assessment of the present situation," Dana M. Peterson, chief economist at The Conference Board said. "Views of current labor market conditions improved in May, as fewer respondents said jobs were 'hard to get,' which outweighed a slight decline in the number who said jobs were 'plentiful.' Looking ahead, fewer consumers expected deterioration in future business conditions, job availability, and income, resulting in an increase in the Expectation Index," said Peterson.

While the economic outlook is generally positive these days, the possibility of a recession still remains a major concern for many consumers.

"The Perceived Likelihood of a US Recession over the next 12 months rose again in May, with more consumers believing a recession is 'somewhat likely' or 'very likely'," Peterson explained.

80% OF AMERICANS ARE DEALING WITH A COST OF LIVING CREEP

Housing market remains largely unaffordable

One area where there hasn’t been much improvement is the housing market. Affordability still remains a dream for many U.S. households. The second-quarter U.S. Home Affordability Report showed that the average-priced home remained less affordable compared to historical averages.

The affordability crisis is largely driven by high housing costs. Home prices reached a new high of $360,000 and mortgage interest rates are back up in the 7% range.

"The latest affordability data presents a clear challenge for home buyers. While home prices are increasing and mortgage rates remain relatively high, these factors are making homes less affordable," said Rob Barber, CEO of ATTOM. "It’s common for these trends to intensify during the Spring buying season when buyer demand increases. However, the trends this year are particularly challenging for house hunters, more so than at any point since the housing market boom began in 2012."

Wages aren’t keeping up with housing costs. Lending guidelines for home buyers typically dictate that only 28% of their income should go towards housing expenses. The Home Affordability Report shows that currently 35.1% of the average national wage goes toward housing costs.

If you think you’re ready to shop around for a home loan, consider using Credible to help you easily compare interest rates from multiple lenders in minutes.

A Texas Gen Xer who went to college in his 40s says it didn't help him find a job and saddled him with over $100k in student debt

  • A Gen Xer in Texas went to college in his 40s because he wasn't happy with his truck driving job.
  • He said a college education hasn't helped him find work and saddled him with over $100,000 in debt.
  • Recent college graduates have had a harder time finding jobs in recent years.

Insider Today

In 2018, at age 40, Kenneth Ferraro decided to pursue a college degree for the first time. It didn't go according to plan.

Ferraro, who's based in Texas, had worked as a truck driver for decades, he told Business Insider via email. While the job provided a stable income, he said he long desired a different career — and he thought going back to school was the best way to make this a reality.

"I traveled across the country, worked long hours, and was more than a little burned out," he said. "This was not a career I had chosen, but like many people, I happened into it. Going to college out of high school was not financially possible."

Ferraro began his studies by attending a local community college part-time, but he said he enjoyed the experience so much that he quit his truck driving job to focus on school. After completing his associate degree, he went on to pursue a bachelor's degree in political science from New York University.

"I knew it would be financially crippling, but I believed the prestigious credential would bolster my employment opportunities after graduation," he said.

However, despite applying for countless jobs over the past few years, Ferraro's had little luck . He said the only role he's been able to land is a delivery driver position for a large beverage company — and he's stuck with over $100,000 in student loan debt .

"After all my hard work and sacrifice, the only work that I have been able to secure is the same type of work that I have been doing my whole life," he said. "My education and dedication to bettering myself have cost me financially and emotionally."

The US male unemployment rate is low compared to past decades, but Ferraro is among the men who have struggled to find work or have stopped looking altogether . In 1950, about 97% of American men ages 25 to 54 had a job or were actively looking for one, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. As of June, this figure had fallen to about 89%.

Among the several explanations for this trend is that in recent decades, it's become difficult for some men to land a well-paying job without a college degree — a development that's contributed to some men leaving the labor force. These challenges persist today for men even as more companies have started hiring candidates without a degree.

The perceived benefits of a college degree have led more Americans to go back to school later in life. About 34% of college undergraduates and 44% of community college enrollees are age 25 or older, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.

But as Ferraro and many recent college graduates can attest to, having a degree doesn't guarantee success in the job market. Last November, the unemployment rate of US college graduates between the ages of 22 and 27 was 5% compared to the 3.7% overall US unemployment rate. That was the most the "recent graduate" unemployment rate had exceeded the overall rate in the over three decades of New York Fed data. Factor in the cost of college and pursuing a degree might not be worth it for some people.

Ferraro shared the biggest challenges he's faced in his job search, including why he thinks having a college degree has sometimes worked against him.

Being an older college graduate could make it hard to land certain types of jobs

Ferraro always knew that pursuing a new career wouldn't be easy. At age 42, he was happy to spend six months interning for a local congressperson.

However, Ferraro's struggles to find a full-time government job left him frustrated. While having a college degree improved his credentials, he thinks his age has held him back in the job market.

Ferraro recalled applying for an entry-level position in the office of a government official, a role he thought would be the "perfect" job for him to kick-start his new career.

The early stages of the interview process seemed promising, but he said things changed when he had an in-person interview.

"As soon as the hiring manager saw me, his whole demeanor changed," Ferraro said. "He ran through the questions and never truly engaged with me."

A few weeks later, Ferraro learned that he was no longer being considered for the role. The only explanation that made sense to him was that the hiring manager wasn't interested in candidates as old as him.

"A man in his forties, who is the perfect candidate on paper, willing to work, willing to learn, and willing to apply himself to any task, is still a man in his 40s," he said. "Therefore, not a valid candidate."

Ferraro needed an income, and after struggling to land jobs in his field of study, he reluctantly decided to expand his search to the truck driver jobs he'd hoped to escape.

But despite his decades of prior experience, Ferraro said he struggled to land an interview for driving jobs — a development that baffled him. But then he had an idea: What if he removed his college education from his résume when he applied?

"I did not start receiving interviews until I removed the education section on my application," he said. "My degree was holding me back."

Despite Ferraro's challenges, truck drivers have generally been in high demand in recent years, in part due to the e-commerce boom tied to the pandemic. But as online shopping trends have begun to normalize, some drivers have had a harder time finding work .

Ferraro eventually landed a job similar to the one he had before his schooling began in 2018, but he said he's earning about 20% less per hour than he used to. He said his employer prioritizes experience at the company over experience in the broader trucking industry.

As things stand, Ferraro said he regrets going to college. However, he still hopes that his education will eventually help him secure an entry-level government role.

After working as a driver during the day, he said he attends graduate school at night. He's working toward his master's in public administration and is continuing to apply for jobs.

"This situation is very frustrating," he said. "It feels like I am putting in so much effort, without any return."

Stock market today: US stocks close at record highs after dovish June jobs report

  • US stocks closed at record highs, led by the technology sector's strong performance.
  • The June jobs report showed 206,000 jobs added to the economy, slightly above estimates.
  • "To us, the message is the labor market is slowing," Fundstrat's Tom Lee said of the June jobs report.

Insider Today

US stocks closed at fresh record highs on Friday after a dovish June jobs report.

The gains were led by the technology sector, with the Nasdaq 100 closing up nearly 1%, while the S&P 500 rose about a half-percent.

Both indexes finished the week at record highs, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average has yet to hit its record high reached in May.

The US economy added 206,000 jobs in June, which was slightly ahead of economist estimates of 200,000, but below the May jobs report, which was revised lower to 218,000 from 272,000.

The April jobs report was also revised lower to 108,000 jobs added that month, down from the initial reading of 165,000.

The job revisions, combined with the unemployment rate ticking higher to 4.1% from 4.0% in June, sent bond yields tumbling and renewed hopes for interest rate cuts from the Federal Reserve.

"The tale told by June employment data and sharp (not unexpected) downward revisions is that it is time for the Fed to cut," economist Steven Blitz of GlobalData TS Lombard said in a Friday note.

"To us, the message is the labor market is slowing," Fundstrat's Tom Lee said on Friday. "Previously, the Fed was reluctant to reduce interest rates, despite the softer inflation, because of the perceived strong labor market. This is less and less the case, arguably, given the softening of jobs."

Market watchers think the path to a September rate cut looks smoother after the report, and the likelihood of two cuts may be rising. According to JPMorgan's David Kelly, a cut in September and one in December is now looking like a good bet, though investors still need to be cautious about adding exposure to stocks with valuations so high.

Here's where US indexes stood shortly after the 9:30 a.m. opening bell on Friday:

  • S&P 500 : 5,567.19, up 0.54%
  • Dow Jones Industrial Average : 39,375.87, up 0.17% (+67.87 points)
  • Nasdaq composite : 18,352.76, up 0.90%

Here's what else is going on today:

Nvidia stock received a rare downgrade from Wall Street on Friday due to concerns about its valuation.

  • Tesla short-sellers have lost $3.5 billion after the electric vehicle maker beat second-quarter vehicle deliveries.
  • Bitcoin plunged to $55,000 after experiencing a sharp decline on Thursday, and it could signal more downside ahead.

The soaring power demand for AI technologies is pushing America's power grid to its limit.

In commodities, bonds, and crypto:

  • West Texas Intermediate crude oil dropped 0.88% to $83.14 a barrel. Brent crude , the international benchmark, was lower by 0.89% to $86.65 a barrel.
  • Gold surged 1.22% to $2,398.30 per ounce.
  • The 10-year Treasury yield dropped eight basis points to 4.28%.
  • Bitcoin dropped 1.04% to $56,449.

Women in India Face a Jobs Crisis. Are Factories the Solution?

As multinational brands shift factory production from China, Indian women — long shut out of the work force — could be prime beneficiaries.

Before her husband died, leaving her to raise their 2-year-old daughter alone, Sarika Pawar had never imagined working a regular job. Like her own mother and most of the women she knew in rural India, she spent her days confined to her village. Her hours were consumed with looking after her toddler, boiling water to drink and fashioning an evening meal.

But with her husband gone, eliminating his wages as a server, she was forced to earn money. She took a job at a nearby factory run by a company called All Time Plastics in Silvassa, a city about 100 miles north of Mumbai. A dozen years later, she is still there, plucking newly molded food storage containers and other household implements off a conveyor belt, labeling them and placing them in cartons bound for kitchens as far away as Los Angeles and London.

Ms. Pawar earns about 12,000 rupees per month, or roughly $150, a meager sum by global standards. Yet those wages have allowed her to keep her daughter in high school while transforming their everyday lives.

She purchased a refrigerator. Suddenly, she could buy vegetables in larger quantities, limiting her trips to the market and giving her more power to bargain for better prices. She added a stove powered by propane — liberation from the wood fire that filled her home with smoke, and an escape from the tedious work of scouring the ground for branches to set alight.
