M.Tech Ph.D is an integrated dual degree academic programme that combines two progressive degree courses postgraduate level M.Tech. and doctoral degree Ph.D. M.Tech is the abbreviated name of Master of Technology. Candidates Who have completed 10+2+4 level of technical education such as B.E., B.Arch. and B.Tech. are eligible for enrolling in M.Tech. Ph.D stands for Doctor of Philosophy, it is a higher level degree programme that can be pursued after completion of 10+2+3+2 or 10+2+4 level of academic programmes.

In integrated M.Tech. Ph.D. course, M.Tech programme consists of four-semesters and Ph.D. programme after the completion of the M.Tech programme subject to the minimum grade required. The programme is designed to give in-depth display and hands-on Research and development experience to the applicants in the respective areas.

CSIR-UGC NET: CSIR UGC NET stands for Council of Scientific and Industrial Research Union Grants Commission National Eligibility Test. It is a national level examination conducted by NTA. It is conducted twice a year in online mode only. The examination is conducted to select eligible candidates for Junior Research Fellowship and provide them appointment as lecturers in universities and colleges in India.

GATE: GATE stands for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. It is organised by IIT Kharagpur. Those who want to take the examination are required to check for notifications and send applications through the official website of the IIT Kharagpur. It is conducted for providing admissions in postgraduate level engineering and architectural programmes.

JEST: JEST stands for Joint Entrance Screening Test. The organising body of JEST is the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. It is conducted to provide admissions in PhD or integrated PhD programmes in physics, theoretical computer science, computational biology or neuroscience. It is recognised by the Science and Engineering Research Board as the National Eligibility Test (NET).

GPAT: GPAT stands for Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test. It is a national level entrance examination conducted to provide admissions in M.Pharm. It is conducted by the National Testing Agency. The duration of the examination is three hours. The examination is conducted in online mode.

The other entrance examinations are DBT JRF and NBHM Screening Test.

M.Tech. Ph.D. Cut off

M.Tech Ph.D Course Structure

M.Tech PhD is a two+three years full-time course divided into two parts. During the first three academic years, students must complete:

Research Methodology course programme ( This course programme is assessed with a Pass or Fail basis)

The research projects( Project A and Project B) last for seven-eight weeks. The two projects are carried out during the second semester of the first year. Both projects are done under different administrators. During the third semester, students start with the second project(Project C). The project must be completed by the third semester.

M.Tech. P.hD. students will receive course credits associated with the course structure. The credits may vary from one institution to another. However, the details of the credit for most institutions are as follows:

Credit for the one short course (2 credits)

Credit for Lab rotation course (10 credits)

Credit for projects- project A and Projects B (24 credits)

Credit for M.Tech Project (24 credits)

The overall credit validation is calculated for 100 credit marks.

Hence, by completing these courses and the projects during the academic year and achieving 75 credits, excluding the M.Tech project credits, students are considered eligible to register for the Doctoral programme.

M.Tech Research Project:

The M.Tech project starts during the second semester of the second academic year. The M.tech Research project is a full-time research project. The M.Tech research project can either be a continuation of the short-term projects- Project A, Project B, or can be a completely new project.

  • A CPI/CGPA of 8.0 or higher is required for a B. Tech from an IIT.
  • Two years of professional experience is required (earned after earning a bachelor's degree and finished prior to the commencement of the semester for which admission is sought)

The Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) currently offers Ph.D admissions to students with a qualifying Master’s (M.Tech or M.E or MS) or Bachelor’s degree (B.Tech or B.E) in the relevant field. In order to attract fresh and talented students with bachelor’s degrees, many institutions, including IITs in the country, have started various Dual Degree programmes such as MS(R) + Ph.D and M.Tech + Ph.D, etc. Such Dual Degree programmes are well received by various industries and educational institutions in the recruitment of their faculty in comparison with a candidate having a Ph.D degree directly after a B.Tech or B.E degree. Many departments of IIT Guwahati have been successfully running the above Dual Degree programmes. In view of the various advantages of the above Dual Degree programmes, the department of mechanical engineering has introduced a Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) programme with five specialisations in M.Tech to students having a B.Tech or B.E as their qualifying degree. The proposed dual degree programme is in line with the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP-2020), with a provision for exiting the programme with a M.Tech degree.

Rules and Regulations of Department of Mechanical Engineering

1) Department of Mechanical Engineering offers five specializations to the students of Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) to obtain their M.Tech degree in (a) Machine Design, (b) Fluids and Thermal Engineering, (c) Manufacturing Science and Engineering, (d) Aerodynamics and Propulsion, and (e) Computational Mechanics. This programme is offered only to students who have B. Tech or B.E in relevant branches of Mechanical Engineering and who would like to pursue both M.Tech and PhD degrees in the department of mechanical engineering at IIT Guwahati.

2) The Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) programme offered by the department (ME) shall be governed by the Master’s + Ph.D degree ordinance of the institute.

3) Students of the Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) programme are admitted in ME department only in the Regular Category in every July session of the year. A student seeking admission to the Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) programme should have a valid GATE Score. Admissions for these students shall follow the admission rules of the institute for regular Ph.D candidates.

4) At the time of filing the application against the institute’s PhD admissions’ advertisement (July session), a candidate needs to opt for the Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) programme. Candidates who have not opted for this programme and apply directly to the PhD programme are not eligible to enrol in the proposed Dual Degree. Similarly, candidates (with B.Tech or B.E as qualifying degree) who apply for PhD admissions in the December session are also not eligible to enrol in the proposed Dual Degree and hence they do not get the M.Tech degree. Such students then can have B.Tech or B. E + Ph.D degrees.

5) A student admitted to the Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) works on a full-time basis in the institute and receives an assistant-ship from the institute or any other recognized funding agency.

6) Admitted students of the Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) programme shall follow the ordinances of the Ph.D programme and other rules of the institute.

7) The maximum duration of the Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) programme is seven years from the date of admission. After successful completion of the defence examination, the student will be awarded both the M Tech and Ph.D. degrees.

8) Students in the Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) programme must do the prescribed course work for three semesters. The requirements for the course work will be a minimum of 12 PG-level courses with a minimum aggregate of 72 credits spanning over the three semesters. Please refer to Annexure-A for a detailed course structure of the department of mechanical engineering in various specializations. After successful completion of the prescribed course, the students are permitted to begin their Ph.D work as per the ordinance of the institute. After successful completion of the Ph.D, a student will also be awarded M.Tech degree in the specialization in which he/she does the prescribed course work as mentioned in the Annexure-B.

9) Exit Policy from the Dual degree programme and award of M.Tech degree. Awarding Master’s degree only: A student can discontinue the Dual degree program and leave the institute with M.Tech degree as per the Master’s + Ph.D ordinances which is as follows: After successful completion of the course work, comprehensive examination, and SOAS by the student, should the Doctoral Committee (DC) feel that the progress of the student is not satisfactory at the time of the first annual progress review, the DC may recommend the submission of a master's thesis, suggesting the volume of work to be completed for the master’s degree. The student will submit the suggested master's thesis and defend the same. The procedure for the submission of a master's thesis and the conduct of an oral examination are as per the relevant clauses of MTech/MDes/MS Ordinances. In that case, the student will receive only the master’s degree as per the enrollment. The department invokes this option only in the rarest of rare cases.

The Ph.D programme leads the student to gain advanced knowledge and research experience in a particular field of study. The principal component of the programme is a dissertation based on original research.

Eligibility

Candidates possessing a minimum of the second class in one of the following degrees are eligible to apply:

  • B. E./B. Tech. or equivalent degree in Electrical /Electronics Communication, Telecommunication, Instrumentation, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science/Engineering, Electrical Engineering
  • M. Sc. in Physics, Mathematics, Electronics, Statistics, Computer Science
  • Master’s in Computer Applications.

In addition, candidates must qualify for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) or one of the other applicable tests.Qualifying in these tests is not mandatory but desirable for candidates who possess a Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology or MSc (Engg) and applying for a PhD.

The requirement of GATE or any other qualifying exam is waived for students with a Bachelor’s degree from a centrally funded technical institution (CFTIs ) with a CGPA of 8.0 or above.

Students are required to complete as part of the Research Training Programme (RTP), a specified number of courses, in consultation with their advisors. Following the RTP, the student is expected to clear a comprehensive examination (comprising a seminar and oral questions on the RTP). In addition to acquiring knowledge in a broad area, students in the Ph.D programme, through coursework, reading peer-reviewed research articles, and seminars, develop an advanced understanding in a field of study, and perform original research, which generally leads to peer-reviewed publications, patents, and technologies for social impact.   • How do I get admitted to PhD in the ECE Dept?

In order to get admitted to PhD you must have

  • appeared in the GATE (e.g., in ECE, EE, or CS) within the last three years or other similar qualifying examinations or
  • secured a Master’s degree in Engineering.
  • Students with a Bachelor’s degree from a centrally funded technical institution (CFTI) with a CGPA of 8.0 or above are also eligible.

If you satisfy the eligibility criteria, you should apply for the PhD programs in the   IISc portal   and choose the ECE Department. The Department shortlists candidates for a technical interview based on their cumulative academic performance, considering marks scored in X class onwards, as reported in the application.   Shortlisted applicants will be called for an online technical video interview. You may be offered admission based on the interview performance on the areas of research indicated in the application.  

  • How do I prepare for the technical interview for PhD (ECE)?

The specifics of the interview and procedures will be intimated via email to the shortlisted students.

  The number of students admitted by a faculty member depends on various factors, including graduation of senior students. The interview letter from the department will mention the research areas / faculty members willing to admit students in the admission cycle.  

  • What are the active research areas under ECE?

  The faculty in the ECE department broadly work in the areas of communication and networks, signal processing, machine learning, microelectronics, photonics, RF and microwave engineering and cyber-physical systems. Please look up individual   faculty pages   for a more current view of topics they work on.  

  • Suppose I have a job after Bachelors or Master in ECE domain, what does the PhD programme at ECE add to my career profile? What are some advantages?

  A PhD degree provides rigorous training to innovate in advanced areas. A bachelor’s degree often does not provide enough training to contribute to cutting edge work in these areas. While a master’s degree provides a stronger foundation training such that one is able to seamless move across areas easily during the course of professional career growth, PhD training helps one to analyse the state of the art to come up with novel solutions useful for the society.   A PhD degree is required for academic positions and help one achieve greater career goals in industrial research.  

  • After admission, how is the advisor/ guide for PhD allocated?

  The advisor-advisee assignment for the PhD students is done soon after joining, considering the area of interest of the student (as expressed during the admission process), interactions between students and faculty and mutual consent of the faculty and the student. Once you have been accepted, the Chair of the department or interested faculties will contact you personally regarding this matter.  

  • How is the research topic decided for the PhD?

  The advisor and advisees jointly finalize a topic of mutual interest.  

  • Is there course work for PhD?

  Yes. PhD students in IISc need to complete 12-24 course credits depending on their previous degree. These courses are determined separately for each student, depending on their background, and area of research.   These courses must be completed within first 2-3 semesters.  

  • Is it possible to do a PhD in ECE Department directly after completing BTech degree?

Yes, it is possible. A direct PhD student (with only a bachelor’s degree) will be required to take 24 credits to complete the course requirements when compared to a student who already has a master’s degree who is only required to complete 12 credits.  

  • What is the prospect of a IISc – foreign university joint PhD degree in ECE?

  IISc has announced the first joint PhD program with Melbourne University, very recently.   In most other collaborations where the student is jointly supervised, and the degree is awarded by IISc.   Many such collaborative research projects are pursued in the Institute. Currently, Thales funded fellowships are available to students of ECE for collaborative research on select topics with French Universities identified by Thales.  

  • What is the process of PMRF for PhD (ECE)?

  The selection process for PMRF is still evolving.   Currently, only lateral entry for students who have completed specified course credits and research requirements is allowed.   In 2023, six PhD students of ECE were awarded the PMRF.  

  • Is it possible for an employee in industry to pursue a part-time PhD?

  Employees in industry can pursue a PhD through the external research program (ERP).   They must contact a prospective guide well before submitting the application.     The selection process and degree requirements are similar to regular students.  

  • Where can I find more information on PhD programmes   in IISc?

  • What are the journal/conference requirements for submitting thesis?

  The thesis requirements vary from area to area and group to group and can be very diverse. Your advisor will be in the best position to advise you on this.  

  • What is the duration of regular PhD program in the ECE department?

  The typical duration of the PhD program in ECE varies from 4-6 years. Every student and research problem is unique and the duration depends on the nature of research.  

  • Is academic internship allowed during PhD program?

  Yes, students may be allowed to travel and intern in other universities to collaborate with leading researchers in the world. This may happen based on the suggestion and advise of the research advisor.  

  • What are the exact requirements of a program from a particular lab. For example, for the same research program, what does lab X require for completion of the program that is different from lab Y?

  These requirements vary from lab to lab and area to area. Students may reach out with specific questions to relevant faculty.  

  • Are placement interviews arranged for students in research programs?

  Yes, the   Office of Career Counselling and Placement   assists all students of IISc for campus placements.  

  • Can I take courses from other departments? Is a course common for students from Masters and PhD?

  The PhD program has a course requirement of 12-24 credits which can be taken from within or outside the Department in consultation with the faculty advisor. It is common for courses to be taken by both Masters and PhD students.

Minimum Qualifications for admission to Part-time and Sponsored (full-time) PhD Programmes

The following eligibility conditions apply for the Part-time and sponsored full-time programmes.

Only employees of Public Sector Undertakings or Government Departments or Research and Development Organizations or Private Industries (approved by Faculty Boards) are eligible for admission to these programmes.

The minimum full-time experience required after obtaining the qualifying degree and as on date of registration, is given below in Table 2:

he/she will be fully relieved from duty and permitted to reside at the Institute for the period of required residency that is essential for completing the course work (this is not a requirement for candidates who are working in NCR or organizations located within a distance of 50 km from the Institute);

that his/her official duties permit him/her to attend required classes as per the Time Table of IIT Delhi;

that his/her official duties permit him/her to devote sufficient time for research;

facilities for research in the candidate’s field of research are available at the candidate’s place of work, in case the proposed Ph. D. research plan requires him/her to use these facilities when the candidate is physically present at this place of work.

A)  There are two methods. If you are an IIT student, then after the first semester in your M.Tech/MS program, you can apply for conversion. If you have a CGPA that is more than 8.0, the DRC (departmental research committee) can then consider your request and admit you after following due procedure. Otherwise, you can apply for the program after you complete your M.Tech/MS degree as a regular applicant. For IIT students, conversion is a good idea because this saves time. Otherwise, the work done for an M.Tech thesis will go waste. It cannot be a part of the Ph.D thesis.


A) Sure, you can. We in fact receive a lot of applications from B.Tech students. Please see the brochure from our PG section.


A)  First, the : A Ph.D is done for the love of research, for creating more knowledge, and for creating something new, money should not always be a factor.
A slightly more : Why did you enroll for a 4 year B.Tech and not do a 3 year B.Sc?  Clearly because you thought that the job prospects are better after a B.Tech. It is true that a B.Tech takes one more year to finish but the gains in the long run outweigh the losses during that extra year.

The same logic holds for every additional degree. A person goes for an M.Tech to get a better job, which is more superior to the job that she was getting after a B.Tech in terms of pay, perks, job security, and future prospects.

Now, if you need more (pay+perks+job security+prospects), join a Ph.D program. In today's market a Ph.D salary is significantly more than a B.Tech or M.Tech salary. It can easily be to the tune of 10 lakhs more than what is offered after B.Tech (if note more in some cases). Along with the salary there are additional advantages of job security, flexibility, and social respect. If you want you can join many other professions that are closed for non-Ph.Ds such as academic institutions, and research labs. The additional time and effort is correlated with material gains.



A) That is a fair point.

Well, India is changing, and is changing very rapidly. I am pretty sure that very few in your family are doing a job in an MNC, but you are still joining or thinking of joining an MNC, without understanding the dynamics of a purely capitalist system all that well.

The fact that if you know more, can do more, then you deserve to be paid more, is a matter of common sense. Clearly doing a Ph.D to know more and to learn more involves time and effort. However, there are benefits. Also a Ph.D is not that much of a sacrifice as it is made out to be.

Consider the medical profession. A doctor with an MBBS can start her career at 24 after 5 years of study, and 1 year of internship. However, a lot of doctors prefer to go for super specialization. They need to do an MD for 2 more years, and an internship of 1 more year. This is again not enough to be a nephrologist, for example. Doctors need to study for a few more years, get enough work experience, and then start their own practice. One of my relatives who is now a top nephrologist in Mumbai started his career when he was about 35. It is true that now he is established and spends his holidays in Europe. But, you also need to factor in the long years of hard work, the long hours of working with patients in the dead of the night, with very little earnings.

If it is perfectly wise for a doctor to start his or her career in his early thirties, why is doing a Ph.D for an additional 5 to 6 years after B.Tech unjustified? You will become a similar super-specialist and then make up for your years of hard work with little money like doctors do.




A) This is correct. But, the fact that the instantaneous salary after let's say 3 years of an M.Tech will be more than the starting salary of a Ph.D is somewhat unlikely. Again, exceptions are possible and it is always possible that a student has a stellar performance in his or her job and gets fat pay raises and bonuses. With the same argument, it is also possible that a student has a stellar performance in her Ph.D and then is invited to a very prestigious foreign university to spend some time after her Ph.D, or gets a job with a very high pay package after her Ph.D. The general trend is that our Ph.D students have gotten good jobs in the past, and have been more than justifiably compensated for their time here.


A) Sure, that is your personal choice. Any advanced degree is not for everybody. It is naturally expected that if X students get a B.Tech degree, Y students get an M.Tech degree, and Z students get a Ph.D, then X > Y > Z.

A) Think of a Ph.D as a regular job. A Ph.D, a job, pursuing a degree, are an aspect of an individual's professional life. A relationship, a wedding, a child, are a part of an individual's personal life. Let us think of them as .

Every person in any profession needs to keep these aspects of life separate. A Ph.D is no different. A Ph.D in no way precludes any person -- male or female -- from getting married and starting a family. There is no reason, why a female student should think of Ph.D and marriage as mutually exclusive.

In fact, as compared to a regular job, students have much more flexibility in a Ph.D program. Flexi-timings, work-from-home, and remote workplaces are novel concepts that have recently entered the jargon of our multinational companies. They are being advertised as the next in thing by their respective HR departments. These have been present in academia for a long time. Ph.D programs are extremely flexible and the advisor and advisee can decide all the specifics. Especially, in our computer science department where it is not necessary for a student to do experiments in a specific lab, dedicated lab time is not necessary. For example, I would not mind if a student works from home and shows up once a week or once a month. The final output matters, not whether it is created in the lab or at home, or in a coffee shop.



A) What would you have done if you were doing a regular job?

Your simple answer might be: I would leave my job, and search for a new one. This is easier said than done. There is no guarantee that you will get a job of the same quality in the new city or new country. In the new country, you might not have the necessary employment permits, and it might take several months to a year to get the necessary paper work done.

In a lot of cases, employees typically negotiate with their current company and work from home for sometime, or go for some other flexible work package till they find a new job with comparable prospects. They might even continue their old job in their current location till they have the necessary paper work.

The same can be done in a Ph.D also. Moreover, IIT has rules to convert a full time Ph.D to part time. It is possible to take 2 semesters off and pursue internships and other professional interests. Along with that, the adviser, advisee, and the department can work out different arrangements based on their mutual convenience.



A) Well, you are the best judge on what is the right choice for you. Note that it is possible to get an additional top-up of 10,000 Rs per month from your advisor's project funds and it is possible to spend up to two semesters in industrial internships where the pay packages are much higher.

Our Ph.D stipends are much higher these days. Ph.D students get 28,000 Rs. per month. If you add the additional 10,000 Rs topup, a student gets 38,000 Rs. per month (totally tax free). If you factor in super-subsidized accommodation and food (total: 4,000 per month) the situation is not that bad. 




A) If a team of experts from the department are selecting you, then it means that in all likelihood you have the potential to complete a Ph.D.

As you rightly think, it is always possible that a student does not do well. She might not get the required GPA in courses, or might not be able to do research. If the latter is the course, the department offers the flexibility to the student to change topics and advisers. In spite of that if things are not working out, then the student always has an option for opting for the easier M.S. degree.

A similar thing can happen in a regular job also. An employee might lose his or her drive, perform inconsistently, and face termination. However, in IIT Delhi we have both formal and informal counseling services, where a serious effort is made to keep a student on track. There are regular evaluations by dedicated research committees who suggest corrections during the tenure of the Ph.D program.



A) These are just ``stories''. We want our students to graduate quickly. According to the institute all students are expected to graduate within 5 years. Beyond 5 years, they do not get an institute assistantship and their hostel room is taken away. It is true that they are given 2 additional years to complete their degree; however, this is meant to be the exception and not the norm. Students should set a target of 4 years, which is reasonable in my opinion. Some students might want to graduate sooner, and it is often possible depending on the outcome of the research. A lot of our students have made it in 3 and 3.5 years as well.

 Secondly, advisers are not the final authorities in a Ph.D program. It is the SRC (student research committee). If a student has any issue, she can always take it to the SRC, or to the head of the department. In IIT's system, an adviser can give all her inputs on creativity and the direction of research. However, he or she needs to play by the rules. There are sufficient checks and balances in the system to ensure that students are not unnecessarily victimized.



A) As I said in an answer to a previous question, if we are selecting you, then in all likelihood you are smart enough. The rest depends on your sincerity, your desire to work hard, your curiosity, creativity and passion.

Trust me, a Ph.D is more about being sincere, systematic, and hard working rather than being simply brilliant.


A) It is the reverse in today's market.

The number of computer science Ph.Ds from institutes of repute in India are not more than 50-100. The job market is an order of magnitude bigger. There are a lot of companies that would love to hire Ph.Ds. It enhances their profile as well. We have not had any major issues with placing our Ph.D students.

Additionally, it is possible to do jobs in academic institutes and R&D labs. If you just consider academic institutes, you will find them to be ubiquitous. Later on, if you need to migrate to let's say New Zealand, you might not find a job in a relevant industry, you will always find a good position in academia.




A) No, absolutely not.

A Ph.D is an advanced degree. Use it for whatever you want. Just to give an example, one of my seniors joined a business consulting firm, Mckinsey, and worked with them for 3-4 years. Then he opened his own company, which was later on bought by Google.

Universities and research labs are traditional employers of Ph.Ds. They are however NOT the only employers of Ph.Ds. You can join regular industries as members of technical staff, financial companies, business consulting companies, open your own startup, do social service, or take up a government job. Ph.D implies teaching is a wrong notion.

A Ph.D enables you to think better, reason better, write better, present better, and perform better. A wide spectrum of companies starting from technical blue chip companies to financial consultants to start-ups value such skills.

A lot of our Ph.D students do very well after graduation in academia, research labs, start-ups and industry.



A) That is a relevant point. We have very good housing options for married students. However, the wait time is currently about one and half years.

Here, is an idea that I would like to encourage. A student can roughly get around 38K rupees (28K stipend + 10K topup) totally tax free. If let's say 3 students decide to stay off campus, they can easily do that. They will have a combined take home income of 114K. They can easily pay a third of it as rent. The additional expenditure for food and a cook in the south Delhi area should not be more than 10K. They can thus enjoy a much superior quality of living and have food of their choice.

It is true that most students do not explore this option, because they prefer hostel accommodation to be more convenient given the proximity. However, this is a matter of individual choice. It is by no means necessary to stay in a hostel. When we were graduate students abroad, all of us stayed in off-campus apartments and cooked our own food, and washed our own dishes and clothes. Thankfully, in India these services can be purchased without spending a lot of money. In fact, students in a lot of engineering colleges across the country also stay in rented accommodation with similar arrangements.

In each of the degree programs, the curriculum consists of completion of prescribed coursework and project/thesis work, as applicable. The Department offers a variety of courses, both in the classical and emerging areas of Mechanical Engineering, with an objective to expose the students to the various facets of Mechanical Engineering. The courses are designed to be rigorous and strive for student learning through various activities such as tutorials, assignments, projects and examinations. The project/thesis work is assigned on an individual basis, even at the B.Tech. level, and the student is expected to work on a problem of interest over a period of time. The project/thesis work is research and development oriented, and typically involves analysis/design of a real-life problem of interest. The project/thesis work may result in publishing of papers in journals/conferences or a patent.

The Ph.D. program offers an opportunity for students with previous bachelor's or master's degree to work on a specific topic to significant depth. The Ph.D. program requires a certain amount of coursework in the initial stages, followed by passing a Qualifying Examination administered by the Department. Beyond a certain rminimum number of courses, the thesis guide(s) may prescribe additional course(s) to be taken, depending on the requirement of the thesis work. After successful completion of the coursework and the Qualifying Examination, a Ph.D. student is confirmed in the program. The next phase of the Ph.D. program involves working on the thesis topic, and is typically characterized by publishing research papers in appropriate journals and conferences. In some cases, the Ph.D. work may result in a patent based on a system designed and demonstrated during the Ph.D. work. A Ph.D. student is expected to broadly work in one of the three specializations: Thermal and Fluids Engineering, Design Engineering, and Manufacturing Engineering, though the nature of the thesis work may often require the work to be on interdisciplinary nature, not necessarily restricted to the classical Mechanical Engineering areas.

1. Which route is better – BTech–>PhD or BTech–>MTech–>PhD?

Mayank : Procedure-wise, those who join PhD after BTech are required to do more course work – eight courses, compared to four. There is one semester of extra course work needed for those who join after BTech. Other than that, there is no difference in terms of the requirements. In some sense, you are saving one-and-a-half years. But I would say you are actually saving one year. MTechs come with some level of training on various tools and skills needed. BTechs don’t come with those trainings, but those trainings are also offered. IISc also offers an integrated PhD position, wherein if you have a certain number of credits, you get both Master’s and PhD degrees. This means that you don’t lose anything; you only gain an extra year, and that extra year can be invested in many things in future.

2. Is MTech mandatory for joining a PhD programme?

Mayank : No.

3. What are the expectations from an MTech student wishing to pursue PhD?

4. What is the difference between MS by research and PhD?

Chaya : MS by research is a research programme of a shorter duration. If you are sure that you want to get a taste of doing research, but you don’t want to commit for a longer duration, then perhaps MS by research is a good idea. In terms of the work that you do in MS by research, you typically either solve one problem or a couple of problems that are closely related and write an MS thesis whereas, in a PhD programme, it is more like a journey where you go from solving problems that are given to asking good questions yourself and becoming an independent researcher. So, it really depends on what you want to do, and what your goals are after your degree. If you feel like you want to try doing research, but you are not sure if a PhD is good for you, then you can enrol for an MS by research programme, which is sort of a good intermediate point, and if you have fun doing it, you can upgrade to PhD or finish your Master’s and then enrol for PhD.

Mayank: You can also request for conversion from MS by research or MTech to PhD. At least in IISc and some of the top institutes in the country, this conversion process exists.

5. What is the difference with respect to course work, duration, placement, and project in PhD, MS, and MTech?

Vishnu : If you look at the different departments, there may be some variations, but the course framework is very clear with respect to the MTech programme. Typically, you are expected to do roughly about 40 credits of course work. Each course may be 3 or 4 credits; they may be graduate or post-graduate level courses. Then, there will be a project component, which is typically around 24 credits. MTech students complete the course work in one-and-a-half years.

Mayank : Let me put this in this way: MTech course work – 12 courses; MS – 6 courses; PhD – 4 courses if you join after MTech, 8 courses if you join after BTech. Typically, you do 5 courses in one semester. Placement is the last thing that IISc students worry about. I hope this statement makes it clear what the placement opportunities are. Students in IISc think about many other things, and placement is the last think to worry about. Regarding the project, it all depends on areas, groups, faculty. It is completely diverse. It cannot be classified as PhD, MS, MTech. But typically, MTech projects are fixed duration projects, MS projects are also fixed duration projects in some sense, whereas PhD is a training programme, it is not a project per se. It all depends on how fast you can demonstrate your ability to do independent research.

6. Can we know about part-time PhD?

Chiranjib : The only way we can enable part-time PhD is through the external registration programme. Here, there are certain rules, which are publicly available. The summary of the rules are: the company should give you leave for one year so that you are physically present here. There should be an advisor from the company side. After one year, you can go back to your company, and contribute both to your company and to your thesis.

7. Do I have to pay huge fees if I get admission to the external registration programme as a PhD candidate from a Government organisation (when the parent organisation does not fund the fees)?

Mayank : The organisation has to sign for funding your fees. This fees is higher than that for the regular PhD candidates, who pay from their stipends.

8. Can you explain the advantages and disadvantages of doing part-time and full-time PhD?

Chiranjib: The only way to pursue part-time PhD is through the external registration programme. As I have seen over the years, most of the ERP students are senior, that is, they have a family and also a job. So, the good thing is that they are much more focussed than our usual students who are full-time PhD students. However, for our full-time students, it is perfectly alright to say, “I have no idea what I am going to do research on. Let me read lots of papers, lots of books; let me try to find problems and try to solve them.” We welcome that; that is actually the best training you can have, because you should not only have a good problem to solve and lots of papers to write during your PhD, but you should also come out as a well-rounded person who is exposed to many things in that subject. For that, our full-time PhD has a big advantage. But, for ERP, your company would also expect you to do some work because they are paying you a salary after your first year. Often, most companies do not leave the candidate alone since there are some expectations. So, unless a candidate is very focussed, unless you have a good mature problem and a good direction, that can become a challenge. This would be a very high-level advantage/disadvantage. So, a one-line summary would be that a full-time PhD allows you to explore many topics, and I personally think this is absolutely essential for somebody with a PhD degree, whereas in a part-time PhD (the ERP programme), because of the lack of time, it will be good if the candidate is focussed. However, there are several examples in our department of ERP candidates who have excelled, and they have written excellent papers.

9. How can we apply for PhD at IISc?

Chiranjib : Currently, we are preparing ourselves to introduce some candidates in November. So, you can still apply. Go to IISc website, you will see admissions and there are clear instructions to fill up certain forms. When you apply, each department—according to the criteria the department chooses—shortlists a select set of candidates. The candidates will then be called for an interview or a written test, and this varies from department to department. For example, in CSA department, if you are shortlisted for an interview, you will be asked to choose a stream – either computer systems and software or intelligent systems or theory, and appropriately, there will be questions asked, and we often stress on foundations. It is perfectly alright to say, “I do not know advanced topics; I only know foundations, but I am pretty strong in that.” Those are the type of candidates we are looking for. So, we check for basic curiosity and mastery at the undergraduate level. If you already have a good Master’s degree, it’s even more of a plus. So, this is the way we select our candidates.

Mayank : Yes.

12. If I am planning on a PhD after 2–3 years of industry experience after MTech, what points should I keep in mind? How can I update myself in the desired field of research while doing an industry job?

Chiranjib : We all have our own views. My research area is in machine learning. So, my answer will be tuned towards that, from that perspective. What I have found is that often, in most of the jobs which are offered here, skills such as proving theorems and reviewing papers are not utilised; hence, in two years’ time, some of these good, strong, academic foundations tend to get lost. That is one case of worry. So, jobs that especially have a large software development component actually cause decay in your academic credentials. That can be very bad news for PhD. However, if you are in a job where you are constantly reading papers, supplementing them – then, that is exactly the job profile which would definitely motivate you to do PhD. It prepares you well. So, my suggestion would be that if you are planning for a PhD after 2 to 3 years, please keep in mind that you should keep yourself abreast of your GATE syllabus and mathematical subjects. You should have familiarity with that. If you are already doing a research-related job, you are very well fit to walk into a PhD programme. Having said that, there is definitely merit in having an industry exposure because that is where there is real excitement.

13. What are the opportunities to do a PhD while working simultaneously in industry?

Mayank: First of all, PhD is a full-time engagement. There is no PhD possible while working in industry except through the external registration programme (ERP) or the sponsored programme that we have. And, even in that case, your engagement on a PhD problem is priority number one. This is also a myth that PhD is a project, and so, you can take up one more project and you can continue working on your industry job. This is not the case. If you are working in industry, either you leave that job, come for a full-time PhD, stay in IISc for a longer period, or if you want to be in your industry job and if your employer supports it, you can enrol for the ERP programme; but even there, you have to commit for the entire course work and after the course work, your administration should give you enough bandwidth and time to work on your PhD problem. Usually, when we sign papers, we expect that the industries commit their employees to be available at least 50–60 percent of their time to work on the PhD problem. Your PhD problem will become your full-time job, and your industry job will become your part-time job.

14. What are the opportunities for a post-doctoral programme at IISc Bengaluru after a PhD in the field of biomedical signal processing, artificial intelligence, and machine learning?

Vishnu : There are different types of post-doctoral programmes that are being offered by IISc. There is a National post-doctoral fellowship; there are also Institute-level fellowships such as the C V Raman post-doctoral fellowship and the Institute of Eminence (IoE) post-doctoral fellowship. Those are all schemes, but you have to first identify a faculty who might be interested. I would recommend you to get in touch with faculty who are working in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) who might be interested in your background. In the department of electrical engineering (EE), we have many faculty who are working in the field of biomedical signal processing, and one of them is Professor A G Ramakrishnan. Professor Sriram Ganapathy is working on speech processing. Professor Prasanta Kumar Ghosh and Professor Muthuvel Arigovindan also work in related areas; you can consider reaching out to them. There are multiple faculty who work in this area, and I would recommend you to get in touch with them.

Sudhan : In the department of electrical communication engineering (ECE), Professor A P Prathosh is working on AI and ML for biomedical signal processing.

Chaya : In the department of computer science and automation (CSA), intelligent systems is an entire research stream, and we have several faculty colleagues working on AI, ML, and related problems. We also have some post-doctoral fellowships like the IoE fellowship. You can check out the department webpage – the information is there. If you think it is suitable, you can apply.

Mayank : In the department of electronic systems engineering (ESE), you should contact Professor Hardik J Pandya and Pofessor Chetan Singh Thakur who work on biomedical signal processing and biomedical topics using AI and ML. You can also contact Professor Shayan Srinivasa Garani who works on signal processing and applications of AI and ML in signal processing. More than 30% of EECS is now in AI/ML and its applications in various fields.

15. Regarding students who want to take up roles in nanoelectronics offered by multi-national companies such as Intel/TSMC/Samsung – what will hold them back in India after a PhD? I am talking about working with leading-edge technologies such as transistors.

Mayank : Whether you stay back in India or you take up positions abroad, that’s completely your choice. IISc prepares you to an extent that is parallel to any best institute in the world, and when you trained to that level, you will have opportunities from around the world. Then, it is completely your call to decide whether you want to stay back in the country or you want to take up a position elsewhere, depending upon the opportunities. Many of us spent a good time in the United States or other parts of the world, and decided to come back for our own calling. So, at the end of the day, it’s your own calling – what you want to do, and where you want to do what you want to do.

16. If a person decides to stay back and work in academia in India – where can he/she get funds to conduct independent research (other than institutes that are a handful in number)? What would even drive him/her if not for industry–academia collaboration and facilities?

Mayank : The drive is completely yours. There are several funding opportunities. Among the researchers and often faculty in tier 2 institutes, there is a myth that the funds are often biased and that they are available only for top institutes. Many of us have been in these committees, and we can tell you that these funding allotments are highly competitive, and they go through a rigorous screening and evaluation process. In that screening and evaluation process, nobody looks into your affiliation. Of course, there is often a correlation between your affiliation and how good your curriculum vitae (CV) is. People often miss out the CV part and often, unfortunately, correlate with the institution. But the fact is that one would look into the proposal, and one would look into the CV. The CV tells of the promise of the individual to deliver the promise or the confidence that the funding agency gains in terms of the individual being able to deliver the promise given in the proposal while the quality of the proposal tells how much advancement in the state-of-the-art will happen if that proposal is pursued or executed. So, if you have written a good proposal, and if you have carefully built your profile, by taking up every opportunity that comes in front of you from the initial stage, after a certain time, you will not feel that your proposal has been kicked out. You will have funding available if you are doing well and if you are writing good proposals. It is an exponential path. So, if you do well, you will do further well and you will have more and more opportunities. Now, if you get into this exponential path, you will have the drive.

17. What happens to research works/papers after they are published? Who actually uses them?

Vishnu: When you do research, whatever be the research, you always stand on the shoulders of giants. You are always looking at what others have done, and that gives direction to your work. In that sense, it is going to be useful to future researchers. You might have used some type of experimental technique or you would have proved a theorem in a particular way, and somebody might use that result as an inspiration to find out something new. All published research will have their own uses.

Sudhan : Once you publish a paper, assuming the paper is not patented, or even if you patent it and then publish, this work can be used by the community. In a specific area, there will be more than a thousand to million people who will be working in the same direction. If your work is very important and significant, then they will cite your paper once they use your method. Then, you will get credit based on how many researchers cited your paper, and that will add value to your CV and your publications; that will also help you for your promotion and when you are looking for a job. You can benefit in many ways if your published paper is very good.

Chaya : Whenever we publish a paper, we are basically advancing the state-of-the-art and knowledge. We either prove a new theorem that gives us new knowledge, or if it’s not a very theoretical paper, we show a better way of doing things that is more efficient than how we currently do things. If you are advancing the state-of-the-art in a theoretical way, then you are basically giving other people more tools to build on top of that. You are contributing to expanding knowledge in some way. If you write a more applied paper, there are also other ways of it being used. The result can actually get deployed in the real world and be made use of in the industry. For example, in computer science, if you come up with new algorithms for very relevant problems or in cryptography, if you come up with cryptographic schemes – today, there is a lot of scope for them to be deployed. This was always true. There used to be a time lag between when you make a certain contribution and when you can actually see that implemented in society. Today, I think that gap is reduced, and you can actually live to see your science making changes.

Mayank: Often, students don’t know what to do with a paper, and often, students are misled in terms of publication as a requirement. What is a paper? A paper is basically your communication about the advancement you have done in a certain field of science or engineering. That advancement is based on a problem statement that you pursued, and you tried to solve. Basically, your paper talks about a certain way of solving a problem. There may be many ways of solving the same problem, there may be many views on the same problem. You are communicating your way of solving that problem or elaborating that problem or even understanding that problem better. Now, how does the problem originate? The problem may originate from something which is pertinent within industry, something which is highly in demand within industry. Then, through peers and the community and through other papers, you get to know a particular problem that the world is trying to solve. That is one. The second is that a problem could be fundamental in nature, say, understanding certain aspects of nature or the universe. It could be physical sciences, it could be biological sciences, it could be mathematical sciences, chemical sciences… So, basically, you are trying to understand a certain property or uniqueness of nature, which has not been explained or elaborated before. That’s also a problem statement. The third type of problem statement could be that a community or a group of people have come up with certain predictions for tomorrow – that tomorrow the world will be of this kind in terms of science and technology, and you are trying to basically develop the idea further by either pointing out certain problems that the world needs to address or by working on problems that other colleagues would have pointed out that this field has to evolve or develop. You have to work on these problems, for example, quantum technologies. These are areas where the problem has originated from the vision that the community has projected. Now, this gives you the problem. If you have solved that problem, the solution or the paper goes back to the same community which has basically given that problem. That community could be your academic circle, it could be your industrial circle, or it could be your other scientific community or colleagues who were posing those problems, or who were parallelly working on those problems. Either it can result in advancing the state-of-the-art of the technology or in an understanding of nature or science. When people cite these papers, you also get noticed as a result of that. Fundamentally, the paper goes back to the community which has posed the problem to the community.

18. Any suggestions on how to work on our dream projects during the current BTech itself?

Chiranjib : In IISc, there are opportunities for doing internships after your BTech. Unfortunately, you don’t have a good, structured programme. Often, you can look up Professors’ websites and see if the things which you want to learn about and want to do your dream projects about is aligned with the Professors’ interests. Do write to the Professor. If you don’t get any response, it is not that the Professor is not interested but it may be that the Professor does not have any positions open. If there are positions open, they will definitely get back to you. We welcome young minds.

1. I looked at the eligibility for the research programs, they mention B.E./B.Tech./M.Sc., the degree currently I am possessing/pursuing is not B.E./B.Tech./M.Sc., so what should I do?.

It should be equivalent to B.E./B.Tech./M.Sc., which essentially means post 10+2 (high school), if the qualification is B.E./B.Tech. that means you should have major in the subject area mentioned and duration of your bachelors program should have been 4 years. If the qualification is M.Sc. that means you should have major in the subject area mentioned in the master’s program and duration of masters program should be for 2 years, which is preceded by 3 years bachelor’s program.

2. Is having standard test score preferred for the research program?

Yes. It is only preferred (not mandatory).

3. What will be the fees structure for the research program?. Will I receive scholarship/stipend per month?

Currently, the total fees will be around Rs. 35,200/- for Ph.D. & Rs. 29,200/- for M.Tech.-Research (subjected to change as approved by the Dean) for one year of study excluding hostel. In case you want to avail the hostel (student accommodation), an additional amount of Rs.45,000/- (Rupees Forty Five Thousand only) should be paid, Rs.20,000/- towards refundable hostel deposit and Rs.25,000/- towards advance payment of Mess and Room Rent for first five months.

All admitted research program students will receive a scholarship/stipend. For M.Tech. (Research), it is Rs. 12,400/- per month. For Ph.D., it is Rs.31,000 for first 2 years and Rs.35,000 from 3rd year till end of 5th year (subject to passing the comprehensive exam)

5. What is the difference between M.Tech course and M.Tech. (Research) program?

M.Tech.(research) is a thesis based degree program with a strong research component (it was earlier known as M.Sc. (Engg.) program), where as M.Tech. course program is a degree program that is by course work with a project dissertation. The duration of M.Tech. course program is strictly 2 years. The duration of M.Tech. (research) is between 1-3 years with average duration being 2.5 years. Also M.Tech. course program along with eligibility degree program, it requires the applicant to have standard test scores ( GRE/GRE Subject/GATE)

6. Will TOFEL/IELTS will be considered as standard test score?

Yes, TOFEL/IELTS both are considered as a standard test, however are not mandatory but preferred for admission into research programmes.

7. Can I apply for both Course and Research Admissions?

Yes, absolutely.

8. Is there a separate application for M.Tech. (Research) and Ph.D. programs?

No. They both are considered as part research program, it will be same application. The department while interviewing candidate might decide on what program is best suited for the student.

9. Which Departments offer M.Tech. (Research)?

The programs and eligibility is available  here . Under each tab, (for example if you see under Electrical Communication Engineering (EC)), the research programs are listed (for EC case it is Programme: Research [Ph D / M Tech (Research)]). Only those departments which have M.Tech. (Research) listed will offer M.Tech. (Research).
