How Much Does a Lutron System Cost? Why Is Lutron So Expensive?

I was recently shopping for smart switches so I could swap out an old switch that only turns the lights on and off. I wanted to be able to add some home automation so that the switch would turn on and off based on certain activities.

Lutron was one of the brands I looked at, and I really noticed the price difference between some of the competitors. I could get one Lutron Caseta switch, or I could get three TP-Link switches for the same price. That got me thinking.

Why Is Lutron So Expensive?!

Lutron products are so expensive because they are the highest quality available and made in the USA. Lutron is the gold standard. Lutron is expensive because of the amount they invest into research and development creating the product, and the level of support they provide to consumers and contractors.

Ask anyone who has used Lutron devices, and they will tell you that Lutron is the best. There is nothing better, and most people say, “It Just Works!”. Let’s take a closer look at what their quality and reputation look like, how much it cost, and how much more it cost over the competition.

What Makes Lutron Expensive?

Lutron has five principals that are the basis of their business decisions. The principals can be found on Lutron’s website here, but here is a copy for reference:

At least 3 of those 5 principals are related to making high-quality, superior products. In order to do that, Lutron has to spend money in hiring quality employees, and funding research and development. That cost gets passed on to the customer.

What Is a Lutron System?

Lutron designs and manufactures lighting shade and temperature control systems. These range from residential dimmer switches all the way up to automated and timer controlled whole-building systems. Lutron creates products for residential and commercial customers.

So, what is a Lutron system?

Lutron systems range from residential systems providing smart lighting, temperature, and shade control for the whole home to commercial systems that can manage lighting controls, motorized window shades, digital ballasts and LED drivers, occupancy sensors, and light sensors.

Lutron has several brands that it sells to customers. The brand that most people looking into smart lighting are familiar with is called Lutron Caseta.

Lutron Caseta may seem expensive when compared to other smart lighting controls, but it turns out Caseta is the starter level for Lutron. Remember, Lutron only produces quality products, so even their low-end brand is going to be some of the best performing on the market.

Lutron actually classifies Caseta as “Single Room Controls”, although you can have up to 75 Caseta devices in a single home. Many people do use Caseta devices for their whole home. I’ll classify Caseta as a whole home system for the sake of this article.

All the brands above Caseta are designed to be professionally installed, although you can find RA2 Select starter kits if you search hard enough. (Like here at lightinghomes.com . I do not have any experience with that company and do not endorse them.) You will need to go to Lutron’s website and find a contractor (click here ). If you want a peek at what some of the higher end Lutron lighting controls look like, check out the store at prolighting.com (click here ).

How Much Does a Lutron System Cost?

The cost of a Lutron system varies greatly depending on what series you choose.

A Lutron Caseta system starts at $100. The next step-up, RA 2 Select, has starter kits for about $400. Professionally installed Lutron systems cost a minimum of $1500 and go upwards of $30,000 for the top-of-the-line Lutron HomeWorks QS.

Lutron Caseta can operate with just a switch and a controller, but you need to add a smart bridge to control it from the app or to integrate it with a smart assistant like Alexa or Google Assistant. Prices will fluctuate over time, but are currently around $50 for a lamp dimmer and a Pico remote.

The Lutron Caseta starter kit, which adds the Smart Bridge, is double the price goes at around $100. Fortunately, you only need to buy the Smart Bridge once.

The next step up would be RA2 Select, which has starter kits that cost around $350 to $400.

Okay, those are the “cheap” systems. RadioRA and HomeWorks is where you will be spending a good amount of money.

For a 4-bedroom house, HomeWorks QS is going to cost around $15,000 for parts, not including labor. HomewWorks needs to be professionally installed. Keep in mind that you are locked into using HomeWorks and it will cost around $4,000 minimum to remove it and go with another system.

RadioRA has slightly less logic and a few other downgrades from HomeWorks. However, it cost about half the price. A good estimate for a 4-bedroom house is $7.500 for the Lutron parts, and then some for labor.

My current Lutron system uses wired wall-mounted keypads. Can I use these with HomeWorks QS?

Your existing HomeWorks Illumination hardwired keypads can be carried over to your QS system, though it requires certain keypad link translators and software licenses to accomplish this. This option also requires continued use of 15V DC power supplies as opposed to 24V to avoid damage to devices.

However, upgrading to HomeWorks QS is a perfect opportunity to explore new and improved on-wall keypads for your lighting control system. Lutron: RadioRA 2 VS Homeworks QS

I am currently in the build phase of my house. I wanted a light control system integrated into the house. I am looking to understand the difference between Ra 2 and Homeworks. To understand what I am looking to integrate I listed needs below... - Ability to have panel near garage/bedroom that can kill all lights in house. (purpose is to hit button before bed or exiting house to kill the lights and keep my bills respectable.) - Motion control - as a person walks into room it will automatically light up. - APP based control. Able to dial into it via iphone/andoid and control lights while AT home and AWAY. - MUST integrate into HVAC system. Would be great if it could integrate with the NEST Thermostat. Want ability to monitor while at work.(via app) - Must be able to dim LED lights/dimmers in each room. Thoughts on my needs and what it is I should be further investigating? Is lutron the right product for me? If So based on needs can someone explain the difference between RadioRA 2 and Homeworks and how they would differ for me? I have read everything on Lutron's site but I did not see a comparative break down of what is difference. I beleive RadioRa is all radio/wireless and Homeworks is Wired/Wireless. Is there other differences? Cost difference? Is one more beneficial than the other? This is not my end all house - its a 5 yr city living house, so I want the benefits of the above "needs" list, but I am NOT going to scale this up and add a Savant/Crestron Home Automation system on top of this. That will be saved for the next build. Thanks in advance!  

The main difference between Ra 2 and Homeworks QS would be scalability and programming flexibility. Ra 2 is system designed around being able to retrofit into a home with regular wiring, so all of the devices are designed to fit into wall boxes, and work in various switching configurations. The devices communicate wireless with each other and rf repeaters. Of course one can install the Ra 2 dimmers in a remote location, and opt for keypad control, but the system design is never truly 'centralized'. From a programming standpoint with Ra 2 you have: Scences - a button press bringing system devices to a preset state Toggles - a button press toggling a load or loads between 2 states (On & Off usually) 1 time clock with the ability to create modes, and events which can be tied to different modes (for example, random lighting turning on and off would be applied to the 'Away' time clock mode, and not the 'Normal'. A programmed Ra 2 system feels pretty vanilla, but it excels at being vanilla. As soon as you start trying to make it more than it is things get a little crazy. Where Homeworks really shines is it's ability to be totally centralized from a design point of view. Dimming panels and processor enclosures can be installed in mechanical areas where all system wiring would be routed too. If you need to add an interface, or power supply all the wiring is in one location. Homeworks QS can also scale up to thousands of devices or zones, where Radio Ra 2 caps at 200 (with a few gotchas thrown in there for good fun). Programming with QS gives you a lot of flexibility with conditional logic (however a little limited at this time) and the ability to dial in the way keypad button presses work and how the end user will use the system. As far as your specific requests, there is not anything that Ra 2 will not be able to achieve. For HVAC I would recommend the Lutron Honeywell stat (with a remote sensor if you want it out of sight). Having the stat integrated instead of stand alone will be much more functional for you, and many stats can be used for multiple zones, which displays very nice on the app. I find sensors with Ra 2 kind of suck, because without conditional logic programming they never really seem to do what you want them to do. For example with Homeworks you can have the sensor respond differently based on time of day, or any other factor you find important whereas with Ra 2 that light comes on to the preset value every time. As far as remote access, Lutron recommends VPN for the apps, so you're going to want to have your installer review the app notes on that topic. Port forwarding does work, however it is not supported by Lutron. Keep in mind with either system that dimming LED's can be challenging. It is getting easier because the quality of dimming drivers is always increasing, however they can still be quirky. I would recommend testing all your fixtures/lamps before hand if possible. There is a Lutron tool for selecting LED fixtures/lamps on their website but it's getting quite dated as they do not seem to update it much (ever). As far as price goes, Homeworks does cost quite a lot more, maybe 50-60% more than Ra 2. One can expect to pay about $300-400 per zone for an installed Ra 2 system (depending on a ton of factors), and Homeworks about $550-650 per zone. Of course prices will vary from place to place and how the system is designed.

Programming my own Lutron Homeworks System

Disclaimer: I'm not a Lutron dealer.

I recently purchased a new construction home from a developer with a Homeworks QS system installed. (I also built my previous home and had Homework QS, so I was very excited and familiar).

None of the palladium keypads have been engraved yet, so I'm planning out my labels and desired programming, but it was a massive pain working with the contractor to update the programming before.

I'm wondering if it's possible for a highly technical consumer to deploy my own Lutron programming and get the lighting programs set to my desired levels.

Has anyone done this before or have any tips for getting access to the software?

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
