Kabaddi is a very popular game in India and is native to the state of Tamil Nadu. Kabaddi is the national sport of Bangladesh and is played extensively in India and Pakistan. It is quite prevalent in the Indian states of Bihar, Punjab, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka. The sport is also known by other names such as Kaudi, Pakaada and Himoshika in different regions. Both; men and women play it. The highest governing body of Kabaddi is The International Kabaddi Federation.

It is played between two teams. Each team has a total of 7 members in it. In every round, a person from one team knows as the “raider” goes to the court of the other team. His or her motive is to tag as many people of the other team as possible, known as “defenders” in a single breath. The raider has to do all of this and come back to his court without being tackled by the other team’s defenders. When a raider returns to his side of the court successfully, he scores points whereas the other team scores a point if they are able to stop the raider.

History of Kabaddi Game

The game kabaddi originated in the Tamil region and was spread throughout south-east Asia during the Tamil Empire. The name kabaddi originates from a Tamil word meaning “holding hands.” This game was said to be played by Gautama Buddha for recreational purposes. The credit for popularising this sport has been given to India. India was the first country to play kabaddi as a competitive sport by organising competitions and was also the pioneer in setting up an All India Kabaddi Federation.

Rules of Kabaddi Game

Each team should constitute a total of 12 players of whom 7 should play, and 5 should be substitutes.
Every match should be looked after by 6 officials: one scorer, two assistant scorers, one referee and two umpires.
The duration of the match is two halves of 20 minutes each with a 5-minute break in between.
In order to prove that he or she hasn’t taken another breath, the raider has to continuously keep saying the word “KABADDI” from the time he has entered the other team’s court, till the time he comes back to his court.
Defenders are only allowed to grab the raiders by their limbs or torso. They cannot hold onto their hair, clothes or any place else.

Major Kabaddi Tournaments

Kabaddi World Cup

This tournament started in 2004, i.e. 16 years ago. It was subsequently held in the year 2007 and 2016 as well. All three times, India stood at the top. In 2016, it was hosted in the city of Ahmedabad. According to the current IKF (International Kabaddi Federation) Rankings, India enjoys the number 1 position. The most recent Kabaddi world cup was held in Malaysia in the year 2019. It was the largest kabaddi tournament ever played. There were a total of 32 Men’s teams that participated in and 24 Women’s teams.

Asian Games

Kabaddi as a sport was introduced at the Asian Games in the year 1990. From 1990 till 2014, the Indian kabaddi team emerged as winners every tournament. However, Iran was the first team to beat India at the 2018 Asian Games held in Jakarta, Indonesia. That year, the Men’s team won the bronze medal, and the women’s team bagged the silver medal.

Pro Kabaddi League

The Pro Kabaddi League sponsored by Vivo was started in the year 2014 and has already completed seven seasons. It was based and influenced on the idea of The Indian Premier League. The first season witnessed a tournament between 8 teams, all owned by famous celebrities, sportspersons and businesspersons. This league turned out to be a huge success and roped in more than 400 million viewers in its first season itself.

Kabaddi is the national sport of Bangladesh. It is the state game of different states in India like Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Kerala, Maharashtra, and Odisha. It is a highly regarded game in Nepal, taught and played in primary schools. It is also the country’s national sport.

Different Names Of Kabaddi | Kabaddi has different names in various regions. It is known as “hu-tu-tu” in the western region, “hu-do-do” in the eastern region, and “chadakudu” in the southern region of the Indian subcontinent. It is known as “ha-du-du” in Bangladesh and “kapardi” in Nepal.

Styles Of Kabaddi | Kabaddi has two different styles of playing depending on the shape of the ground. "Circle Style”, also known as "Punjabi Kabaddi” is a traditional form of Kabaddi played on a circle-shaped ground, and is most famous in rural areas of Punjab, that is, where it originated from. “Standard Style” is played in a rectangular-shaped court, and is widely played including that in various national and international competitions, such as the Asian games.

Kabaddi was famous among the Yadava people. An Abhang by Tukaram states that Lord Krishna used to play Kabaddi in his childhood.

Kabaddi As A Competitive Sport | India first popularised Kabaddi as a competitive sport, with the first competitions organised in the late 1920s. The All India Kabaddi Federation was formed in 1950. Rules of Kabaddi

There are different variations of Kabaddi but the basic rules of scoring a point, number of players, and declaring someone out are mostly the same. Let's take a look at the basic rules of Kabaddi.

Each team consists of 12 players from which only 7 players will be on the court at a time and others will be substitutes.

Matches are categorised according to the age and weight of players because of the physical nature of this contact sport.

Each game is played in two halves of 20 minutes with a 5-minute break at halftime.

A raider gets a point for every player of the other team he touches in a single breath. The defending team gets a point for the successful capture of a raider.

Players that are declared ‘out’ while raiding or defending can be taken in with each point scored.

Each team takes turns raiding and defending. The courts are switched after the halftime break.

The game in the same manner continues till the time up. The team that scores the maximum points is declared winner.

Coming of The Pro Kabaddi League

In a country dominated by cricket, the beginning of the Pro-Kabaddi League in 2014 glamorised the sport of Kabaddi in India, and it became the second most–watched sport event after the Indian Premier League. It helped many players from rural India to show their talent at the game at the national and international levels. Kabaddi getting recognised at a bigger level has fetched livelihood and a means of sustenance for many of those skilled at the game.

When I was in school, we used to play Kabaddi just as a pastime and because our seniors usually kept the cricket bat and ball with themselves. Unlike for other sports like cricket, football, and basketball, there weren't many competitions organised for Kabaddi despite there being some talented players around. However, with the beginning of the Pro-Kabaddi League, things have changed. My peers from school who have been good at Kabaddi right from school days are now playing in various tournaments organised by universities and state federations.

Good performance in Kabaddi is even fetching scholarships to these students. Now, I am in college in the capital of my state, and the players who played kabaddi with me in school are playing in various tournaments held by universities and state federations. Some players are even getting scholarships based on the amazing skills that they achieved playing kabaddi during school just to pass time.

Kabaddi: The origin, history and evolution of the sport

The epic Mahabharata, a demonstration at the Olympics and the Pro Kabaddi spotlight, here's everything you need to know about kabaddi's history.

The history of kabaddi can be traced back to some 4,000 years ago in India. And while it has had roots in the country all this time, its spread hasn’t been as deep.

However, the advent of Pro Kabaddi in 2014 managed to urbanize the rural game into a 21st-century thriller and the sport hasn’t looked back since. In fact, it remains one of the most-watched sports in cricket-crazy India.

Kabaddi is said to have started as a form of practicing combat moves for battles and wars in ancient times.

“It is believed that kabaddi was invented to develop defensive responses by an individual against group attacks and group’s responses to an individual attack,” according to the World Kabaddi Federation . In fact, the game of kabaddi starts with a single raider going into the opponent’s side, which comprises seven defenders.

“This is the only combative sport in which offence is an individual effort whereas defence is a group effort,” the WKF pointed out.

Kabaddi history in the Mahabharata

Deeply rooted in Indian culture for centuries, kabaddi has even found a mention in Hindu mythology. In the Sanskrit epic Mahabharata , It is said that the Pandava warrior, Arjuna, mastered kabaddi’s skills from Lord Krishna, who adored the sport. The story goes that Arjuna would breach enemy walls inconspicuously and would walk back unscathed with his kabaddi skills.

Another tale from the Mahabharata involves Arjuna’s son, Abhimanyu, who invaded the seven-tiered defence -- an army formation -- of the Kauravas. It draws sporting parallels to a single raider raiding in the opposition side of the mat, which often has seven defenders.

Apart from Mahabharata, it is also believed that Lord Gautam Buddha used to play kabaddi during his leisure time.

Kabaddi’s origin: India or Iran?

It is a popular belief that kabaddi originated from the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. In India, the sport had different names in different states before its establishment as the sport it’s recognised today. It was called Chedugudu or Hu-Tu-Tu in the southern part of the country, while it was referred to as Hadudu (for men) and Kit-Kit (for women) in the east.

Some argue that the sport originated in Iran about 5,000 years ago. “My hometown, Sistan, was where it was first found,” claimed Meraj Sheykh, a notable kabaddi player from Iran.

“Several ancient books spoke about it too. We were the original founders of the game, not India,” Meraj told ESPN India.

It wasn’t until the early 20th century that the sport finally got its recognition. In 1918, the first official rules and regulations of kabaddi were brought into effect before it was declared as the national sport of India. However, it took five years to print those documents for circulation.

In 1923, an all India tournament of kabaddi was held in Baroda and since then, several national-level tournaments have been organised across the country.

Kabaddi in Olympics and Asian Games

Kabaddi in India got its first international exposure during the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. Although the sport wasn’t officially a part of the sporting extravaganza, a 35-member kabaddi team from Hanuman Vyayam Prasarak Mandal (HVPM), an educational institute in Amravati, was invited to demonstrate the antics in Berlin.

The team performed at the Congress of Physical Education a day before the commencement of the Olympics leaving spectators amused. The team, eventually, received medals on the final day of the Berlin Olympics .

The widespread recognition of the sport saw the establishment of the All India Kabaddi Federation (AIKF) in 1950, which staged the first men's and women’s national tournament in 1955 in Chennai and Kolkata respectively, after running it as a demonstration sport in the inaugural 1951 Asian Games .

In 1972, the Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India (AKFI) was formed to promote the game in India’s neighbouring countries. The decision bore fruit as the first Asian Kabaddi Championship was held in 1980 where Japan, Nepal, Malaysia, Bangladesh and India contested. The Indian national kabaddi team defeated Bangladesh in the final to become the first-ever champion.

In 1982, the game was once again added as a demonstration sport in the 1982 Asian Games before it was finally established as a medal sport in the 1990 Asiad. India have always been a superior side in the Asian Games, winning all but one of the eight finals since 1990. It wasn’t until 2018 that their winning streak was halted by Iran in the final.

Kabaddi World Cup offers glory

Eventually, the sport made way for the Kabaddi World Cup in 2004, which was hosted by India in Mumbai.

Twelve teams participated in the competition, and the Indian kabaddi team asserted its domination by going unbeaten throughout the tournament before lifting the title by defeating Iran 56-28 in the final.

Till date, as many as three Kabaddi World Cups ( standard style ) have been hosted -- all in India -- and all the three finals have seen India beating Iran for the trophy. The 2016 Kabaddi World Cup , however, holds a special place in the sport as this was the first time a world cup for women was hosted.

Pro Kabaddi takes it to the masses

However, it wasn’t until 2014 that the sport got its due. The start of Pro Kabaddi elevated the status of the sport manifold by taking a rural pastime to primetime television nationwide. Till date, as many as seven PKL seasons have been played and as many as five different teams have lifted the title.

In its seven seasons, stars likes Anup Kumar , Pardeep Narwal , Rahul Chaudhari , Deepak Niwas Hooda and Ajay Thakur have dominated the sport in raiding, while Manjit Chhillar , Ravinder Pahal , Fazel Atrachal i and Sandeep Narwal have been solid at the back.

A sport that has its roots bestowed in India has come a long way, and it is certain to make massive strides in the years to come. As per Google’s ‘Year in Search 2019’ report, the Pro Kabaddi league generated a whopping nine per cent growth in viewership with 1.2 billion impressions. It thus became the second-most searched tournament in India after the Cricket World Cup in 2019. This comes down to show the growth this sport has made over the years.

Kabaddi: an Outdoor Game with Indian Origin

Other than watching TV shows or engaging in video games, humans can engage in outdoor games and events to have a good time with their family, friends, or associates. Dyck believes, “Outdoor games are usually preferred than other sources of entertainment because they involve physical and mental activities necessary for healthy living” (Dyck 23). A number of outdoor games that individuals can engage in are available. Some of these games are easy to undertake and require no commitment or any arrangement. Kabaddi is one of the games that require no commitment, special tools, distinct place, or specific season.

The origins of Kabaddi can be traced back to medieval India. Over time, the game has been played in Indian Vedic schools. Although differences have arisen and instructions have been framed, the game’s primary objective has endured. Unlike other games, Kabaddi is a very cost-effective game. It can be played at any place. It does not require large court areas as exhibited by other outdoor games like cricket and football. An appropriate portion of land is all that is needed to play the game. The land can be a green field, a beach, or a sandy desert. The land selected for the game influences the nature of the game. As such, the harder it is to move on the land selected, the more challenging the game. As indicated above, no special tools or gadgets are required during the game.

Any individual, regardless of his or her sex, religion, social class, racial, or ethnic background, can play the game. The game’s standard field measurements are 125m 2 . The required length of the field should be 12.5m. The width of the field is 10m. The field is divided into two halves. Each of the two halves will be occupied by opposing teams. The surface of the field is usually dugout for a minimum of 1 foot deep. The dugout part is filled with mud. Currently, the game has been played in a court made of synthetic turf. By doing so, the safety of the players is enhanced.

The team is usually made up of 14 active players. Seven members of each team are positioned on the opposite halves. Each of the teams has five supplementary members. While the game is in session, the captain is the only individual allowed to converse with the team members. The players can utilize kinesics to interpret the intentions of other players. The play’s session is divided into two halves. Each half lasts for 20 minutes. A halftime break of 5 minutes is allowed between the games. Women or children’s match comprises two sessions, each lasting 15 minutes. At the end of the first half, the teams are given a five-minute break.

When the game is in session, teams initiate chances by sending a raider to the rival’s ground. Raiders are required to tag players of the rival team prior to returning to their home ground. A player who is tagged is eliminated from the game. In this respect, members from the same team must defend themselves from being tagged by the rival team. As such, defenders form a restraint by joining hands. If the restraint is broken, one of the defenders is eliminated. The major objective of the defenders is to thwart the raider from returning to their ground prior to taking a breath. If the attacker takes a breath prior to moving back to their court, he or she is eliminated from the game.

While the game is in session, only one raider is allowed to invade the rival team’s court. When two or more raiders invade the rival team’s court, a point is rewarded to the rival team. Once a raider has returned to their court or is eliminated by the rival team, the rival team is expected to send their raider in 5 Seconds. Accordingly, each team is expected to send their raider up until the session expires. Whenever the raider misses initiating a raid in 5 seconds, the opposing team is rewarded with a point.

Players are not permitted to hold the raiders’ bodies intentionally other than their limbs or trunks. Any player who violates this rule is eliminated from the game. Players can also be eliminated when they cross over borderlines or when their bodies are exposed to the ground outer the borderline. The above rule is only exempted when a player is tussling with the rival team member. When a member of the team is eliminated, the rival team gets the point. A team earns two points, whenever the whole members of the rival team are eliminated. The team with the highest points at the end of the game is pronounced a winner. When a tie is experienced, two extra plays are added. Each play lasts for five minutes. If the tie persists, the team that scored first will be announced the winner.

Based on the way the game is played, it is apparent that there are certain roles in life, personalities, or social relationships that prepare one for the practice. As such, the game requires individuals who are disciplined, keen, and upheld coordination. An individual who exhibits the above attributes will be perfectly fit to be a player in the above game. Equally, social relationships that emphasize coordination, teamwork, and disciple can also rehearse an individual for the practice.

By being involved or watching the game, the children can learn explicit techniques of how to relate to the world, to the surroundings, to living things, or to other individuals. With respect to the above, four lessons can be learned by children who engage in Kabaddi. 1. Through the game, children will learn about the importance of teamwork. Like many other sports, teamwork is very vital while playing Kabaddi. It takes a coordinated effort from the team members to outscore the rival team. Similarly, for kids to be successful in whatever they are doing, they must rely on the efforts of their friends, teachers, and parents.

Similarly, through the game, the children can learn to be constantly over-prepared. Kabaddi players usually spend days to be prepared physically and emotionally for the game. Notably, the preparation is not only meant at winning the game but also maintain healthy lives. Therefore, children can learn to be always prepared for their school assessment or to tackle other life challenges. The game also teaches children to be humble. Usually, the best players in Kabaddi are individuals with the utmost humility. Therefore, the game will teach children to be humble in their daily lives to accomplish their initiatives.

The game also teaches children not to give up in their endeavors. Although most Kabaddi games last for almost forty minutes, the winning points are normally scored towards the end of the game. Thus, the game encourages children to believe in their dreams, no matter the time it takes to achieve. John Berger suggests, “Every extraordinary work was the outcome of a lengthy positive struggle” ( Ways of Seeing ). Children should note that through their struggles, their dreams would eventually become realities.

During the play, children may think or imagine about pleasing their supporters. Usually, professional players engage in a game with the objective of winning. As such, they are not interested in how supporters perceive them. In this regard, children should be taught to concentrate on winning the game rather than on the supporters’ views. If they accomplish to do this unfailingly, they will win positive recommendations from the supporters. The above engram will become a portion of their everyday perception.

Kabaddi can reveal more about the culture, history, or attributes of those who play and support the game. Given that the game originated in India, its analysis will illustrate an essential part of ancient Indian culture. Kabaddi emphasizes discipline, teamwork, and coordination. The above attributes illustrate the elements of the pioneers of Kabaddi. Similarly, the game illustrates that cultural and communal strengthening events were an important part of the society that founded Kabaddi.

History Of Kabaddi

Kabaddi is basically a combative sport, with seven players on each side; played for a period of 40 minutes with a 5 minutes break (20-5-20). The core idea of the game is to score points by raiding into the opponent’s court and touching as many defense players as possible without getting caught on a single breath.

One player, chanting Kabaddi!!! Kabaddi!!!! Kabaddi!!!! Charges into the opponent court and try to touch the opponent closest to him, while the seven opponents make maneuvers to catch the attacker. This is Kabaddi, the match of one against seven, known as the game of struggle.

The players on the defensive side are called “Antis” while the player of the offence is called the “Raider”. The attack in Kabaddi is known as a ‘Raid’. The antis touched by the raider during the attack are declared ‘out’ if they do not succeed in catching the raider before he returns to home court. The 1st Asian Kabaddi Championship was held in the year 1980 and was included as a dem¬onstration game in the 9th Asian Games, New Delhi in the year 1982.

The game was included in the South Asian Federation (SAF) games from the year 1984 at Dacca, Bangladesh. Kabaddi was included as a discipline in the 11th Asian Games Beijing 1990 and India won the lone Gold Medal of Kabaddi in the 11th Asian Games Beijing 1990. India is the reigning champion in the succeeding Asian Games held in Hiroshima 1994, Bangkok 1998, and Busan 2002 & recently at Doha 2006 and created history in Indian sports by winning five consecutive Gold medals in the Asian Games so far.

For the first time in the history of Asian Games a separate indoor stadium was built for Kabaddi competition and training in the 15th Asian Games held at Doha [Qatar] 2006. The training/ warming up courts and main field of play was made up of puzzle mats of Korean make.
