Speech Title : Why Malaysians should have to undergo flu shot Organizational Pattern : Monroe’s Motivated Sequence Visual Aid : Power point slides General Purpose : To persuade Specific Purpose : To persuade my fellow Malaysians to undergo a flu shot during the flu season. Central Idea : There are several explanations why Malaysians should have to undergo a flu shot as the importance of flu shot is to lower the risk of infection from flu-associated diseases, protecting ourselves and those around us, particularly those who are more vulnerable to serious flu disease. Introduction (Monroe’s Motivated Sequence 🡪 Attention) I. Attention getter A. If you could do one thing that would stop you from flu diseases during seasonal flu and help others not to get infected, why wouldn’t you take a flu shot vaccination? B. Most Malaysians didn’t realize the importance of flu shot and most of us couldn’t care less about flu. To add more insult, some people tend to say that they still get infected by the flu anyway even after receiving the flu shot. II. Reveal topic A. According to Centre of Disease Control and Prevention, influenza is a virus infection that attacks our respiratory system caused by influenza viruses. In Malaysia, several influenza viruses were known by previous cases such as HIV and influenza A, which are H1N1 and H3N2 whose common name we all know as the flu.
B. Individuals who are at risk of infected by the flu are infants, children, older people, pregnant women, people with chronic illness, people who are obese and those with weak immune system.
III. Establish credibility A. My family and I had previously taken a flu shot during the 2009 influenza outbreak before we went on a country trip. B. After doing some research, I want to persuade my audience to get that flu shot as it is our duty as a responsible Malaysian to protect others and ourselves to prevent the transmission of this disease in this country.
IV. Preview body/ state central idea A. Flu shot are important to lower the risk of getting infected by the virus influenza, to protect ourselves and those around us and to prevent the disease from spreading to other people.
(Transition: Let’s look more closely why we should we get a flu shot that could give us many benefits for our health)
Body (Monroe’s Motivated Sequence 🡪 Need) I. More life will be at risk of life-threatening disease if the flu vaccination is rejected. A. There are chances of influenza outbreak to happen again in the future after the 2009 influenza outbreak that has killed approximately 151,700 to 575, people worldwide based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC). 1. You could develop a serious complication of flu or other conditions from long-term illness or worse, death. a. You may get infected by the infected people when they cough or sneeze as they are transferring the flu virus into their surroundings. b. Furthermore, you can be infected by breathing in the air of infected person as there are tiny droplets of virus that could remain on our clothes causing us to be easily infected if the flu shot is not taken.
(Monroe’s Motivated Sequence 🡪 Satisfaction) II. There are many ways to promote flu shot to the societies, especially in our country. A. To protect communities from the flu, government should be implementing a more regular vaccination campaign and provide free vaccine or vaccine subsidies.
- The government should raise public consciousness of the value of flu shot. a. A flu awareness campaign is able to tell the community that not all flus are equal. Some of the flus are mild, but some can kill, especially if they afflict the young and old. Based on Flu Prevention is an Act of Love campaign that was launched by Tun Dr Siti Hasmah, organizing the campaign will help people to understand that vaccinating their young children or ageing parents against the flu is an act of love. b. The campaign is included with educational articles, expert videos, real-life flu stories or testimonials from older couple and social media influencer whose child was hospitalized after contracting the flu disease. B. Government can create mobile vaccination vehicles such as 1Malaysia Mobile Clinic, allowing the vehicles to move around the city and be more accessible.
- The 1Malaysia Mobile Clinic will provide care to people in the interior and aboriginal areas who have not had full access to the mobile clinics run by the Ministry of Health in the city. a. For those who have zero access to health care such as the Iban people that located deep in a dense forest will make them easier to get the flu shot C. The Malaysian Medical Association should advise those planning to travel overseas to obtain vaccination for influenza a month before departure.
- Flu shot will strengthen the immune system and antibodies of the patients as well as keep others away from being infected with the influenza virus. a. The patients who are easily infected with the virus due to changes of weather can be saved from the influenza by taking the flu shot.
b. Other than that, people need to prioritize prevention over treatment by seeking immediate treatment at a health facility when they do not feel well or experience any influenza symptoms before they could travel to overseas. D. A research from the same source indicates that a flu shot should be offered to everyone in your family including young children, adults and to the older family members. i. The parents, older children, elder people and caregivers should be vaccinated to prevent transmission of disease to the baby since infants under the age of 6 months are forbidden from any flu vaccination causing the infants to be at high risk for serious complications from the flu.
(Transition: People’s lives can be saved if we change our mindset to be vaccinated with flu shot and get rid of all the misconceptions of flu shot.
(Monroe’s Motivated Sequence 🡪 Visualisation) III. There are many benefits that you can gain from receiving flu shots. A. Most Malaysians do not realize that taking a flu shot along with a healthy lifestyle is very effective in preventing the flu, rather than taking health supplements or merely following a healthy lifestyle alone. a. According to the Journal of Gerontology: Medical Science in September issue, studies show that a person who received a flu shot and was taking health supplements had a much stronger immune response with the vaccine. b. Researchers claim that the elderly person who make exercises as their routine will gain extra immunity from the flu shot. B. Flu shot vaccination is capable to decrease the chances of spreading the diseases within your household.
- According to Shot of prevention dated in 2015, it stated that pregnant women should be given a flu vaccination. a. Study shows that pregnant women who received a flu vaccine during pregnancy were 92% more effective in preventing infant hospitalization since the pregnant women will transfer the immunity to their babies via placenta.
