Have you heard the riddle about two coins that equal thirty cents, but one of them is not a nickel? What about the one where a surgeon says they can’t operate on their own son?

Those brain teasers tap into your critical thinking skills. But your ability to think critically isn’t just helpful for solving those random puzzles – it plays a big role in your career. 

An impressive 81% of employers say critical thinking carries a lot of weight when they’re evaluating job candidates. It ranks as the top competency companies consider when hiring recent graduates (even ahead of communication ). Plus, once you’re hired, several studies show that critical thinking skills are highly correlated with better job performance.

So what exactly are critical thinking skills? And even more importantly, how do you build and improve them? 

What is critical thinking?

Critical thinking is the ability to evaluate facts and information, remain objective, and make a sound decision about how to move forward.

Does that sound like how you approach every decision or problem? Not so fast. Critical thinking seems simple in theory but is much tougher in practice, which helps explain why 65% of employers say their organization has a need for more critical thinking. 

In reality, critical thinking doesn’t come naturally to a lot of us. In order to do it well, you need to:

  • Remain open-minded and inquisitive, rather than relying on assumptions or jumping to conclusions
  • Ask questions and dig deep, rather than accepting information at face value
  • Keep your own biases and perceptions in check to stay as objective as possible
  • Rely on your emotional intelligence to fill in the blanks and gain a more well-rounded understanding of a situation

So, critical thinking isn’t just being intelligent or analytical. In many ways, it requires you to step outside of yourself, let go of your own preconceived notions, and approach a problem or situation with curiosity and fairness.

It’s a challenge, but it’s well worth it. Critical thinking skills will help you connect ideas, make reasonable decisions, and solve complex problems.

7 critical thinking skills to help you dig deeper

Critical thinking is often labeled as a skill itself (you’ll see it bulleted as a desired trait in a variety of job descriptions). But it’s better to think of critical thinking less as a distinct skill and more as a collection or category of skills. 

To think critically, you’ll need to tap into a bunch of your other soft skills. Here are seven of the most important. 

Open-mindedness

It’s important to kick off the critical thinking process with the idea that anything is possible. The more you’re able to set aside your own suspicions, beliefs, and agenda, the better prepared you are to approach the situation with the level of inquisitiveness you need. 

That means not closing yourself off to any possibilities and allowing yourself the space to pull on every thread – yes, even the ones that seem totally implausible.

As Christopher Dwyer, Ph.D. writes in a piece for Psychology Today , “Even if an idea appears foolish, sometimes its consideration can lead to an intelligent, critically considered conclusion.” He goes on to compare the critical thinking process to brainstorming . Sometimes the “bad” ideas are what lay the foundation for the good ones. 

Open-mindedness is challenging because it requires more effort and mental bandwidth than sticking with your own perceptions. Approaching problems or situations with true impartiality often means:

  • Practicing self-regulation : Giving yourself a pause between when you feel something and when you actually react or take action.
  • Challenging your own biases: Acknowledging your biases and seeking feedback are two powerful ways to get a broader understanding. 

Critical thinking example

In a team meeting, your boss mentioned that your company newsletter signups have been decreasing and she wants to figure out why.

At first, you feel offended and defensive – it feels like she’s blaming you for the dip in subscribers. You recognize and rationalize that emotion before thinking about potential causes. You have a hunch about what’s happening, but you will explore all possibilities and contributions from your team members.

Observation

Observation is, of course, your ability to notice and process the details all around you (even the subtle or seemingly inconsequential ones). Critical thinking demands that you’re flexible and willing to go beyond surface-level information, and solid observation skills help you do that.

Your observations help you pick up on clues from a variety of sources and experiences, all of which help you draw a final conclusion. After all, sometimes it’s the most minuscule realization that leads you to the strongest conclusion.

Over the next week or so, you keep a close eye on your company’s website and newsletter analytics to see if numbers are in fact declining or if your boss’s concerns were just a fluke. 

Critical thinking hinges on objectivity. And, to be objective, you need to base your judgments on the facts – which you collect through research. You’ll lean on your research skills to gather as much information as possible that’s relevant to your problem or situation. 

Keep in mind that this isn’t just about the quantity of information – quality matters too. You want to find data and details from a variety of trusted sources to drill past the surface and build a deeper understanding of what’s happening. 

You dig into your email and website analytics to identify trends in bounce rates, time on page, conversions, and more. You also review recent newsletters and email promotions to understand what customers have received, look through current customer feedback, and connect with your customer support team to learn what they’re hearing in their conversations with customers.

The critical thinking process is sort of like a treasure hunt – you’ll find some nuggets that are fundamental for your final conclusion and some that might be interesting but aren’t pertinent to the problem at hand.

That’s why you need analytical skills. They’re what help you separate the wheat from the chaff, prioritize information, identify trends or themes, and draw conclusions based on the most relevant and influential facts. 

It’s easy to confuse analytical thinking with critical thinking itself, and it’s true there is a lot of overlap between the two. But analytical thinking is just a piece of critical thinking. It focuses strictly on the facts and data, while critical thinking incorporates other factors like emotions, opinions, and experiences. 

As you analyze your research, you notice that one specific webpage has contributed to a significant decline in newsletter signups. While all of the other sources have stayed fairly steady with regard to conversions, that one has sharply decreased.

You decide to move on from your other hypotheses about newsletter quality and dig deeper into the analytics. 

One of the traps of critical thinking is that it’s easy to feel like you’re never done. There’s always more information you could collect and more rabbit holes you could fall down.

But at some point, you need to accept that you’ve done your due diligence and make a decision about how to move forward. That’s where inference comes in. It’s your ability to look at the evidence and facts available to you and draw an informed conclusion based on those. 

When you’re so focused on staying objective and pursuing all possibilities, inference can feel like the antithesis of critical thinking. But ultimately, it’s your inference skills that allow you to move out of the thinking process and onto the action steps. 

You dig deeper into the analytics for the page that hasn’t been converting and notice that the sharp drop-off happened around the same time you switched email providers.

After looking more into the backend, you realize that the signup form on that page isn’t correctly connected to your newsletter platform. It seems like anybody who has signed up on that page hasn’t been fed to your email list.

If and when you identify a solution or answer, you can’t keep it close to the vest. You’ll need to use your communication skills to share your findings with the relevant stakeholders – like your boss, team members, or anybody who needs to be involved in the next steps.

Your analysis skills will come in handy here too, as they’ll help you determine what information other people need to know so you can avoid bogging them down with unnecessary details. 

In your next team meeting, you pull up the analytics and show your team the sharp drop-off as well as the missing connection between that page and your email platform. You ask the web team to reinstall and double-check that connection and you also ask a member of the marketing team to draft an apology email to the subscribers who were missed. 

Problem-solving

Critical thinking and problem-solving are two more terms that are frequently confused. After all, when you think critically, you’re often doing so with the objective of solving a problem.

The best way to understand how problem-solving and critical thinking differ is to think of problem-solving as much more narrow. You’re focused on finding a solution.

In contrast, you can use critical thinking for a variety of use cases beyond solving a problem – like answering questions or identifying opportunities for improvement. Even so, within the critical thinking process, you’ll flex your problem-solving skills when it comes time to take action. 

Once the fix is implemented, you monitor the analytics to see if subscribers continue to increase. If not (or if they increase at a slower rate than you anticipated), you’ll roll out some other tests like changing the CTA language or the placement of the subscribe form on the page.

  • Practice active listening: Active listening helps you process and understand what other people share. That’s crucial as you aim to be open-minded and inquisitive.
  • Ask open-ended questions: If your critical thinking process involves collecting feedback and opinions from others, ask open-ended questions (meaning, questions that can’t be answered with “yes” or “no”). Doing so will give you more valuable information and also prevent your own biases from influencing people’s input.
  • Scrutinize your sources: Figuring out what to trust and prioritize is crucial for critical thinking. Boosting your media literacy and asking more questions will help you be more discerning about what to factor in. Critical thinking is a skill that you can build by following these seven steps. The seven steps to critical thinking help you ensure you’re approaching a problem from the right angle, considering every alternative, and coming to an unbiased conclusion.

First things first: When to use the 7 step critical thinking process

There’s a lot that goes into the full critical thinking process, and not every decision needs to be this thought out. Sometimes, it’s enough to put aside bias and approach a process logically. In other, more complex cases, the best way to identify the ideal outcome is to go through the entire critical thinking process. 

The seven-step critical thinking process is useful for complex decisions in areas you are less familiar with. Alternatively, the seven critical thinking steps can help you look at a problem you’re familiar with from a different angle, without any bias.

1. Identify the problem or question

Before you put those critical thinking skills to work, you first need to identify the problem you’re solving. This step includes taking a look at the problem from a few different perspectives and asking questions like: 

What’s happening? 

Why is this happening? 

What assumptions am I making? 

At first glance, how do I think we can solve this problem? 

A big part of developing your critical thinking skills is learning how to come to unbiased conclusions. In order to do that, you first need to acknowledge the biases that you currently have. Does someone on your team think they know the answer? Are you making assumptions that aren’t necessarily true? Identifying these details helps you later on in the process. 

2. Gather relevant information

At this point, you likely have a general idea of the problem—but in order to come up with the best solution, you need to dig deeper. 

During the research process, collect information relating to the problem, including data, statistics, historical project information, team input, and more. Make sure you gather information from a variety of sources, especially if those sources go against your personal ideas about what the problem is or how to solve it.

Gathering varied information is essential for your ability to apply the critical thinking process. If you don’t get enough information, your ability to make a final decision will be skewed. Remember that critical thinking is about helping you identify the objective best conclusion. You aren’t going with your gut—you’re doing research to find the best option

3. Analyze and evaluate data

Just as it’s important to gather a variety of information, it is also important to determine how relevant the different information sources are. After all, just because there is data doesn’t mean it’s relevant. 

Once you’ve gathered all of the information, sift through the noise and identify what information is relevant and what information isn’t. Synthesizing all of this information and establishing significance helps you weigh different data sources and come to the best conclusion later on in the critical thinking process. 

To determine data relevance, ask yourself:

How reliable is this information? 

How significant is this information? 

Is this information outdated? Is it specialized in a specific field? 

4. Consider alternative points of view

One of the most useful parts of the critical thinking process is coming to a decision without bias. In order to do so, you need to take a step back from the process and challenge the assumptions you’re making. 

We all have bias—and that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Unconscious biases (also known as cognitive biases) often serve as mental shortcuts to simplify problem solving and aid decision making. But even when biases aren’t inherently bad, you must be aware of your biases in order to put them aside when necessary. 

Before coming to a solution, ask yourself:

Am I making any assumptions about this information? 

Are there additional variables I haven’t considered? 

Have I evaluated the information from every perspective? 

Are there any viewpoints I missed?

5. Draw logical conclusions

Finally, you’re ready to come to a conclusion. To identify the best solution, draw connections between causes and effects. Use the facts you’ve gathered to evaluate the most objective conclusion. 

Keep in mind that there may be more than one solution. Often, the problems you’re facing are complex and intricate. The critical thinking process doesn’t necessarily lead to a cut-and-dry solution—instead, the process helps you understand the different variables at play so you can make an informed decision. 

6. Develop and communication solutions

Communication is a key skill for critical thinkers. It isn’t enough to think for yourself—you also need to share your conclusion with other project stakeholders. If there are multiple solutions, present them all. There may be a case where you implement one solution, then test to see if it works before implementing another solution. 

This process of communicating and sharing ideas is key in promoting critical thinking within a team or organization. By encouraging open dialogue and collaborative problem-solving, you create an environment that fosters the development of critical thinking skills in others.

7. Reflect and learn from the process

The seven-step critical thinking process yields a result—and you then need to put that solution into place. After you’ve implemented your decision, evaluate whether or not it was effective. Did it solve the initial problem? What lessons—whether positive or negative—can you learn from this experience to improve your critical thinking for next time? 

By engaging in this metacognitive reflective thinking process, you're essentially teaching critical thinking to yourself, refining your methodology with each iteration. This reflective practice is fundamental in developing a more robust and adaptable approach to problem-solving.

Depending on how your team shares information, consider documenting lessons learned in a central source of truth. That way, team members that are making similar or related decisions in the future can understand why you made the decision you made and what the outcome was.

Example of critical thinking in the workplace

Imagine you work in user experience design (UX). Your team is focused on pricing and packaging and ensuring customers have a clear understanding of the different services your company offers. Here’s how to apply the critical thinking process in the workplace in seven steps: 

Step 1: Start by identifying the problem

Your current pricing page isn’t performing as well as you want. You’ve heard from customers that your services aren’t clear, and that the page doesn’t answer the questions they have. This page is really important for your company, since it’s where your customers sign up for your service. You and your team have a few theories about why your current page isn’t performing well, but you decide to apply the critical thinking process to ensure you come to the best decision for the page. 

Gather information about how the problem started

Part of identifying the problem includes understanding how the problem started. The pricing and packaging page is important—so when your team initially designed the page, they certainly put a lot of thought into it. Before you begin researching how to improve the page, ask yourself: 

Why did you design the pricing page the way you did? 

Which stakeholders need to be involved in the decision making process? 

Where are users getting stuck on the page?

Are any features currently working?

Step 2: Then gather information and research

Step 4: Consider alternative viewpoints to reduce bias

In the case of critical thinking, it’s important to address and set bias aside as much as possible. Ask yourself: 

Is there anything I’m missing? 

Have I connected with the right stakeholders? 

Are there any other viewpoints I should consider? 

Step 5: Determine the most logical solution for your team

You now have all of the information you need to design the best pricing page. Depending on the complexity of the design, you may want to design a few options to present to a small group of customers or A/B test on the live website.

Step 6: Communicate your solution to stakeholders

Critical thinking can help you in every element of your life, but in the workplace, you must also involve key project stakeholders . Stakeholders help you determine next steps, like whether you’ll A/B test the page first. Depending on the complexity of the issue, consider hosting a meeting or sharing a status report to get everyone on the same page. 

Step 7: Reflect on the results

No process is complete without evaluating the results. Once the new page has been live for some time, evaluate whether it did better than the previous page. What worked? What didn’t? This also helps you make better critical decisions later on.

How to Improve Critical Thinking Skills

Practice Active Reading

OK, maybe you know what active listening is, but what about active reading? Active reading is when you read challenging material and reflect on what you read. It can help you engage with information and build your critical thinking skills.

Pick an article on a topic you’re interested in. While you’re reading, write down thoughts you have about the author’s arguments and follow-up questions you have. Even better, get someone else to read the same material and start a conversation about what you wrote down!

“By reading diverse and challenging material, such as books, articles, or academic papers, students can expose themselves to different perspectives and complex ideas,” Warzel says. “Following this, students can engage in reflective writing, where they articulate their thoughts and opinions on the material, while incorporating logical reasoning and evidence to support their claims. This process helps develop clarity of thought, logical reasoning, and the ability to analyze and synthesize information effectively.”

The exercise might seem a little like homework at first, but that’s why professors have you answer comprehension questions and participate in discussions for school — they want you to think critically about the material.

Building your critical thinking skills doesn’t just have to be reading a bunch of articles. It can be fun, too! Regularly engage with puzzles like logic puzzles, riddles, and word games. These puzzles practice your reasoning skills while keeping you intellectually stimulated.

Critical thinking isn’t done in a bubble. You’ll need to collaborate with others, especially in the workplace, to understand past projects, roadblocks, what resources they have, and their opinions. Good critical thinkers are open to a range of answers and ideas. They want to take in all of the evidence to understand why something is (or isn’t) happening.They also know going into a problem with an open mind is the best way to solve it.

“Adopt a curiosity mindset, learn how to ask good questions, and practice unraveling something from end to beginning and vice versa,” says Arissan Nicole, resume and career coach and workplace expert. “Critical thinking is about being reflective, not reactive. Put yourself in situations that are uncomfortable and challenge you, be around people that have different viewpoints and life experiences and just listen.”

How to Demonstrate Critical Thinking Skills in a Job Application

We know employers value critical thinking skills, but you don’t just want to add “critical thinking” in the skills section of your resume. Instead, your goal should be to show employers that you have these skills.

On Your Resume

On your resume , highlight experiences where you used critical thinking skills.

“Include relevant experiences or projects that demonstrate your ability to analyze information, solve problems, or make informed decisions,” Warzel says. “For example, you can highlight academic coursework that involved research, critical analysis, or complex problem-solving. Additionally, you can mention extracurricular activities or volunteer work where you had to think critically or exercise your problem-solving abilities.”

In the Interview

In the interview , elaborate on your experiences using the STAR method to frame your answers. The STAR method helps you clearly and concisely describe the situation, what you did, and what results you found.

Beyond speaking to your experience, you can also show your critical thinking skills in how you answer questions. This is especially true for more technical interviews where the interviewer might ask you to solve problems.

For example, let’s say you’re interviewing for a data analyst position. The interviewer might ask you a hypothetical question about how you’d figure out why company sales dipped last quarter. Even if you don’t have an answer right away (or a full one!), speak your thought process out loud. Consider:

  • Where do you start?
  • What resources do you rely on?
  • Who do you collaborate with?
  • What steps do you take to uncover an answer?
  • How do you communicate results?

“Emphasize your ability to think logically, consider multiple perspectives, and draw conclusions based on evidence and reasoning,” Warzel says. 

This is the time to get specific about exactly what steps you’d take to solve a problem. While on a resume you might keep it short, the interview is the time to elaborate and show off your thought process — and hopefully show why you’re the best candidate for the role!

Critical thinking, problem solving, and working well with others are necessary for employees at any level, but MIT Sloan professors Nelson Repenning and Don Kieffer, along with alumnus Todd Astor, found that leaders who can directly answer the question of “what problem are you trying to solve” will be a step ahead in the game.

According to Repenning and Kieffer, a good problem statement has five components that include: 

  • a reference to something the organization cares about, and connects that to a clear and specific goal.
  • clear articulation of the gap between the current state and specific goal.
  • measurable targets.
  • neutrality toward causes and solutions.
  • an achievable and appropriate scope.

“In our experience, leaders who can formulate clear problem statements get more done with less effort and move more rapidly than their less-focused counterparts,” the experts wrote in MIT Sloan Management Review. “Clear problem statements can unlock the energy and innovation that lies within those who do the core work of your organization.”

Understanding the value of soft skills takes time.

Millennials soon will be the leaders in the business world, and those same future leaders also come with a set of challenges. Among them: soft skills.

While millennials’ technical skills are far ahead of other generations, professor John Van Maanen said at last year’s MIT Sloan CFO Summit, they “are often lacking in soft skills, like communication and problem solving.”

A lack of soft skills, however, does not spell immediate doom for an organization’s success. While demand for some soft skills “is occasionally predictive of hiring problems,” according to MIT Technology Review, most of those skills — like cooperation and teamwork — don’t necessarily point to hiring difficulties.

That isn’t to say soft skills aren’t helpful, but they need to be connected to a particular job requirement and employer needs, writes Andrew Weaver, assistant professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Soft skills could help bridge the economic divide.

MIT Sloan professor of information technology Erik Brynjolfsson said soft skills can help bridge the gap between poverty and wealth in the United States.

Brynjolfosson proposed during an Inclusive Innovation Challenge panel that the problem is not a lack of work, but “finding the right people for the right jobs.”

A solution to that problem is teaching critical thinking over something like memorization. This in turn helps address the need for soft skills.

Soft skills training brings substantial returns on investment.

A study by Namrata Kala, an assistant professor of economics at MIT Sloan, along with colleagues from the University of Michigan and Boston College, found that in-factory soft skills training returned roughly 250 percent return on investment less than a year after the training’s end.

The study also found that employees who did not participate in the training but worked alongside employees who did showed some improvements in workplace productivity.

“Our interpretation of the results is that skills like time and stress management, communication, problem solving and decision-making, and effective teamwork are ‘soft’ inputs into production,” the study said. “Reinforcing these skills thus directly affects productivity."

What are soft skills?

What are the most in-demand soft skills employers are looking for in 2023, 50+ top soft skill examples, how can you highlight your soft skills in a job search, faqs about soft skills.

“Soft skills are intangible attributes related to how you work,” says Muse career coach Jennifer Smith , founder of Flourish Careers . They’re the traits and qualities you possess that dictate how you’ll engage with others—also known as interpersonal skills —and how you’ll perform in the workplace. 

You may be more familiar with hard skills , which are often based on specific knowledge like how to do a certain task or use a specific piece of technology, but “soft skills focus more on your actual behaviors or habits in work situations,” says Muse career coach Al Dea . 

For example, are you always coming up with outside-the-box solutions and proposals? Can you give a presentation that makes everyone in the room sit up and pay attention? Do you always step in to help when someone on your team needs it? These are demonstrations of your soft skills—creativity, public speaking, and teamwork, respectively.

Soft skills are:

  • More subjective than hard skills : Saying that you know how to prepare someone’s taxes or upload content using WordPress is fairly straightforward. Did the taxes get filed correctly? Is the content uploaded? Then you have those skills. But saying that you’re a good leader isn’t as clear-cut.
  • More timeless than hard skills: “Many soft skills will continue to be needed for the foreseeable future even as the industry and market evolve,” Dea says. A lot of common tech tools, like those we use for social media or search engine optimization, didn’t even exist until recently—and neither did the hard skills that go with them, Dea says. And technologies will continue to evolve, meaning that the hard skills you need now might not be as important in five or 10 years. But working hard and being dependable are unlikely to ever go out of style.
  • More transferable than hard skills: When you’re just starting out in your career or if you’re going through a career pivot—no matter how large—you may not be able to use all of the hard skills you honed in the past, but soft skills like communication and creativity can serve you in most jobs.

In May 2022, ZipRecruiter analyzed job listings across their site for the soft skills that appeared most often throughout 2021. According to that analysis, the soft skills that were most in demand are:

  • Interpersonal skills
  • Flexibility

Problem-solving skills

  • Attention to detail
  • Collaboration
  • Multitasking

Since every employer is going to write job descriptions and identify soft skills a bit differently, some of these skills overlap, but this list can still give you an idea of the soft skills employers want most right now.

Also note that while ZipRecruiter listed “compliance” as a soft skill, it’s more often a job function or a hard skill that means following (a.k.a. complying with) industry or legal standards. For example, an HR manager could be responsible for ensuring a company is in compliance with the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) when accommodating employees. If a job posting asks for “compliance” as a soft skill, that could be a red flag .

Here are some of the most important types of soft skills and some examples of the individual skills that fall under each category. This list isn’t exhaustive, but you can use it to start thinking about which soft skills you have and which you’d like to develop further.

“Every job involves some types of communication,” Dea says. Having the ability to communicate effectively is vital for any role and can affect a number of experiences in the workplace—from how well you convey your expectations and how well you understand others’ expectations to whether or not you land that big account. Strong communication skills will mean fewer misunderstandings, clearer indications of progress toward goals, and better relationships with coworkers, among other benefits.

  • Active listening
  • Giving clear feedback
  • Negotiation
  • Nonverbal communication
  • Public speaking
  • Verbal communication
  • Written communication

Leadership skills

Don’t skip this section just because you aren’t a manager or senior-level employee. “You don’t need to be a leader to demonstrate leadership!” Dea says. Employees at any level can still demonstrate their leadership skills on projects and within their teams.

A big part of any job is solving problems, and not every problem has a clear-cut answer, Dea says. The ability to figure out how to approach new or particularly difficult problems is a key soft skill.

Collaboration and teamwork skills

You need to know how to work with others toward a shared goal or objective. First, you need to know what soft skills to highlight. When you’re looking at a job posting, you might see phrases like “strong communication skills” or “team player” or “skilled multitasker.” Do your eyes just jump over these? Or do you note them the same way you would qualifications such as “must have three years of experience as a Salesforce administrator” or “must be proficient in JavaScript”?

Well, you should be paying attention, because these are soft skills that are crucial to the role you're applying for. So always review the job description, Smith says. Companies aren’t asking for a self-starter with great attention to detail for no reason. You can also “take a look at LinkedIn profiles for people who work at the company and see what skills they have,” Smith says. Or you can talk to people who already work in a position or at a company you’re interested in and ask them which soft skills are most vital to success.

How to highlight soft skills on your resume

While many job seekers think of their resume as the prime space to show off their hard skills , you should also make sure your soft skills shine. You might include your most important soft skills in a resume summary . You might even list the soft skills mentioned in or directly related to the job description in your skills section , Smith says, though Dea suggests only going this route if you have extra space.

But remember that anyone can say that they have strong leadership skills or problem-solving abilities. You have to show prospective employers how you’ve used your soft skills and what you’ve achieved. This means working your soft skills into your bullet points. For example, if you wanted to talk about your leadership skills, Smith suggests something like:

  • Assumed leadership role for sales team with the lowest worker satisfaction survey results in the company. Motivated and engaged employees by encouraging feedback, holding a variety of team-building events, and celebrating top performers at weekly meetings, increasing positive sentiment by 34% in one year.

Or you can combine your soft and hard skills into one bullet point. For example:

  • Collaborated with a team of 3 to conduct market research through one-on-one meetings with customers about their needs and concerns. Wrote clear and concise questions used by entire team and assigned tasks and tracked progress in Asana. Presented findings visualized with Tableau and made recommendations to senior staff.

For each of your resume bullets (which should be quantified and achievement-oriented ) think, “Which of my soft skills helped me to accomplish this?” You might also choose action verbs (collaborated, led, presented, motivated) that speak to the appropriate soft skills, as in the examples above.

How to highlight soft skills in your cover letter

Cover letters are a great place to expand on your soft skills. Tell a story that explicitly mentions your experience with the soft skills in the job description to highlight your fit for the role, Smith says. So if a job description calls for someone with “excellent organizational skills” and you wanted to emphasize yours, you could say:

“When I started my current job as office manager for BubbleTech, supplies were stashed wherever there was room—I found Post-its in the kitchen and snacks in a cabinet over the printer! So I put my organizational skills to work, inventorying and rearranging all the supplies. I also sent around a Google Sheet that told everyone where they could find each item. In addition to checking the inventory weekly, I made sure my colleagues could note on that same Google Sheet when something was running low and I’d know to order more. As a result, BubbleTech stopped wasting money on extra supplies and never again found themselves completely out of any item when it was needed.”

How to highlight soft skills in a job interview

You can and should mention examples of how you’ve used your soft skills in your answers to interview questions . Think about which of your soft skills you want to emphasize before your interview, and come prepared with stories that show those skills in action. You can structure your answers using the STAR method to ensure that you include not only how you used your skills, but also what results they got.

How to highlight your soft skills throughout the hiring process

Your behavior before, during, and after each step of the application process will also show employers some of your soft skills firsthand, Smith says. For example, every email you send and each phone call, video meeting, and in-person interaction you have with someone at a company you’re interviewing with says something about your communication skills, Dea says. 

Arriving on time for an interview is a given, but speaks to your dependability and time management skills. Being prepared with strong, inquisitive questions about the role will show the hiring manager how curious and proactive you are, and asking your interviewer questions about themselves and responding earnestly to their answers will show your empathy and active listening skills

Why are soft skills important?

“The way you get work done and interact with others is a critical component within the workplace,” Smith says, so soft skills are crucial to your success and reputation, no matter what your role or seniority level.

Think about a company you were part of or a team you were on that really got things done in a way that felt rewarding. Why was that? Sure, the individuals on the team probably had the hard skills to complete their work tasks, but that’s just the “what.” The “how” comes from soft skills. Maybe innovation and creativity flourished. Maybe communication was very open and direct without ever being harsh. Maybe the environment was very collaborative and individuals were never blamed for failures. Maybe the team had a great rapport. Soft skills make these things possible.

How can you improve your soft skills?

Because they’re not based on specific knowledge like hard skills, soft skills are often considered more difficult to learn or strengthen. And there’s a bit of truth to that, but that doesn’t mean you can’t develop your soft skills. Follow these steps:

  • Establish where your soft skills stand now . Our experts suggest looking at past feedback from performance reviews and other sources and/or asking for current feedback; looking at your past and current work responsibilities and identifying which soft skills have helped you succeed in your job and which ones could have helped; or taking a skills assessment or quiz (like this , this , and this ).
  • I dentify one or two areas you want to focus on first. Think about any areas where you’re often running into problems at work or repeatedly getting feedback on. These are probably the soft skills you want to start with. For example, do you always find yourself needing to re-explain what you wrote in an email? Maybe look into improving your writing skills .
  • Practice. Smith recommends putting yourself in situations where you’ll have to stretch your soft skills, but start small. For example, do you struggle with public speaking ? Maybe you can give a short presentation to your immediate team at an upcoming meeting. Are your leadership skills lacking? Volunteer to run point on a simple project. And whenever possible during your practice, ask for feedback.
  • Consider taking a class. While online classes for soft skills are less common than classes on how to use a flashy new program, you can still find courses online that will help you with your interpersonal and other skills.
  • Ask your network for help. “Find a mentor who is good at what you’re trying to improve and ask them to coach you,” Smith suggests. Or if you have a coworker who’s great at the soft skill you’re trying to work on, you might observe and evaluate what they do and think about how you can apply these strategies yourself, Dea says.

Mar 25 Is Critical Thinking a Soft Skill?

Recently, an article came across my news feed labeling critical thinking as a non-academic soft-skill that is “increasingly considered important in education.” I don’t know whether or not the author intended it to be provocative, but it was. It popped up in my newsfeed because outraged academics were pointing out that they actively teach critical thinking in their fields (namely in the humanities). Every so often articles like this pop up claiming that critical thinking is a soft skill and is surely not being taught in schools, despite its importance in the workplace and everyday life. I’ve seen a lot of think pieces pitting hard vs soft skills and faulting education, broadly, for not teaching the soft skills. One of the things that stood out to me about these conversations is the use of “hard” and “soft” and the implications that has.

Hard vs. Soft Skills

The article mentioned above was “Hard facts needed on ‘soft skills’” by The Australian and, despite everything that is to follow in my critique of the terms ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ here, I have to admit this is a clever title. So, what exactly is the difference between hard and soft skills? Most of the definitions I could find came from discussions around skills needed in the workplace (1, 2). Hard skills refer to skills that are measurable and can be trained, while soft skills are less tangible and difficult or impossible to train. So, hard skills generally refer to things like typing speed, proficiency in a foreign language, or skill with a particular software. Or mostly software, depending on which infographic you chose*. Soft skills, on the other hand, refer to things like leadership, time management, personality, and, apparently, critical thinking.

Is Critical Thinking A Soft Skill?

In a previous post I discussed what critical thinking is and whether or not it can be taught. While there are some qualifications to what we mean by critical thinking, the general conclusion is: Yes, we can teach critical thinking. This semester I’m focusing on critical thinking in my cognition class, using the wonderful book “Thought and Knowledge: An Introduction to Critical Thinking” by Diane Halpern (3). Halpern offers the following definition for critical thinking:

Critical thinking is the use of those cognitive skills or strategies that increase the probability of a desirable outcome. It is used to describe thinking that is purposeful, reasoned, and goal directed - the kind of thinking that is involved in solving problems, formulating inferences, calculating likelihoods, and making decisions, when the thinker is using skills that are thoughtful and effective for the particular context and type of thinking task.

Within this framework, there are a number of skills associated with critical thinking: seeking out contradictory evidence, making risk: benefit assessments, recalling relevant information when it is needed, monitoring your own performance and deciding when additional help is needed, demonstrating an advanced ability to read and write complex prose, determine credibility and use this information in formulating and communicating decisions, and more (3). These are all skills that can be taught and assessed, i.e. hard skills. 

It is worth noting, however, that these skills will look different in different contexts. For example, while there are some general rules of thumb you can apply to determine credibility, a lot of that depends on understanding the specific norms and practices within a given field. I am good at determining credibility when reading information about psychology, specifically cognitive psychology, but less skilled at determining credibility when reading outside of my own field. When making a decision about what car to buy, for example, I am no more skilled at determining what is a credible source of information than anyone else. I could certainly learn how - and making analogies to processes I already know would be helpful - but critical thinking in one domain does not automatically transfer to another domain.

Critical thinking is, to put it in more direct terms, thinking on purpose. You have to consciously seek out and evaluate information. Critical thinking does not happen automatically. Critical thinking is hard . As with anything challenging, this means there is an aspect of attitude to critical thinking. It takes perseverance, patience, and forgiveness to be a critical thinker. You have to be able to admit you were wrong and to keep looking for information even when you think you have solved the problem. In that respect, attitude and personality fall firmly into the soft skills side of the hard/soft dichotomy.

Hard vs. Soft: Does it Matter?

Some aspects of critical thinking fall firmly into the ‘hard skills’ set, while other aspects fall well within the ‘soft skills’ set. So which is it? Before we rush to neatly label something as ‘hard’ or ‘soft’ I want to examine whether those labels are actually useful. Let’s look at the list of soft skills again. Leadership, communication, time management, and personality show up a lot on these lists of soft skills. Personality isn’t necessarily a skill, but it’s complicated, so let’s set that aside for now. The rest: leadership, communication, and time management are all skills that can be trained and can be assessed (4,5). If they can’t, then we all need to think about the number of leadership training seminars that are being run... At least one of the websites that described the difference between hard and soft skills went on to promote training in the soft skills (though they did note that soft skills could be trained, and they offered some fairly specific training seminars that broke down these skills sets into more specific and measurable chunks, a point we’ll return to later).

What about personality? Surely that can’t be trained. People are who they are and some are just easier to get along with, right? Let me introduce you to the state vs trait debate within personality psychology. Personality can be defined as individual differences in characteristic patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving (6). If you think of personality as a trait of an individual, then this definition suggests that we all have characteristic patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that remain stable over time. A shy, introverted girl will grow up to be a shy, introverted woman. On the other hand, if you think of personality in terms of states an individual experiences then this definition suggests that we have different sets of patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving. A girl may be shy and introverted in certain contexts, but outgoing and social in other contexts. Those contexts may shift and change over time such that she becomes more outgoing in one area of her life and more shy in another area.

As with most things, the state vs trait debate is nuanced. I don’t think any personality psychologist would claim that personality is entirely state-based or entirely-trait-based. Instead, it’s somewhere in between. You may have general tendencies, but find yourself thinking, feeling, and behaving differently depending on the context. While you may tend to be shy and introverted, you may find yourself developing the skills you need to be outgoing and sociable if your job demands it. To use myself as an example, as a student I used to turn beet-red and mumble whenever I talked in class. I still get easily embarrassed in front of people, just not when I’m teaching or speaking about my area of expertise. Your range of comfort or ability will vary, but it’s not immutable and unchanging. It’s not impossible to learn a new skill over time.

If these soft skills can be trained and measured, what makes them soft skills? I’m not entirely sure. Even if personality is treated as an immutable trait, there is a lot of variability in what makes a certain personality good or bad for a job. Personality traits that are good in one job, may be a hindrance in others . The other “soft skills” - leadership, communication, time-management - are all skills that require experience to develop. While there are commonalities, these will all vary depending on the workplace and workplace culture.

These are also a set of skills that are often studied by social scientists. It therefore takes some level of expertise and knowledge of behavioral research to measure them appropriately. When looking at the research on these types of skills, I pulled largely from research within psychology and economics. You can train and measure ‘soft skills’, it’s just a bit harder than checking for a certification for a software program.

Perhaps most telling, whether or not something is considered a ‘hard’ or ‘soft’ skill seems to depend on who is making the list. There appears to be some debate about whether problem solving is a hard or soft skill. The infographic above from indeed lists it as a soft skill, but edupristine lists it as a hard skill. Time management also hops from hard to soft depending on which list you look at.

Final Thoughts

I don’t think it’s useful to label something as a ‘hard’ or ‘soft’ skill. While there are certainly differences in how one can acquire, develop, and demonstrate different skills, the labels ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ don’t seem to adequately convey those nuances. Instead, I would argue that labeling something as a ‘soft’ skill glosses over some important information. Skills can be trained and assessed. Understanding what skills an employer is specifically looking for can help job-seekers (and students) understand how to develop that skill. “Communication” is pretty vague. Does this job require the ability to give engaging presentations? To provide effective feedback on team members’ performance? To mitigate disputes and clear up misunderstandings? To explain complex processes to clients in terms they will understand? All of these are communication skills one might need in a specific job, but are very different. If anything, it seems like ‘soft skills’ is shorthand for “a vague sense these things are important, without taking the effort to list out the specifics”. 

Critical thinking, then, is both and neither. It can be trained and can be measured, but will rely on domain-specific information and experience (3). We can teach some domain general skills and techniques, like understanding the need for persistence, looking for contradictory evidence, and so on; but the speed and ease with which you can do those things depends on practice.

What are soft skills?

Soft skills are general traits not specific to any job, helping employees excel in any workplace. They include communication, teamwork, and adaptability, often termed as transferable or interpersonal skills. They’re essential for professional success.

At a minimum, employees need role-specific knowledge and abilities to perform their job duties. Neil Carberry , Director for Employment and Skills at CBI , talks about the balance between attitude and technical skills: “Business is clear that developing the right attitudes and attributes in people – such as resilience, respect, enthusiasm, and creativity – is just as important as academic or technical skills. In an ever more competitive jobs market it is such qualities that will give our young talent a head start and also allow existing employees to progress to higher skilled, better-paid roles”​​.

According to research conducted by Harvard University, 85% of job success comes from having well-developed soft and people skills , with only 15% attributed to technical skills. This underlines the substantial impact soft skills have on professional success​​.

In addition, Deloitte’s research indicates that jobs requiring intensive soft skills are expected to grow 2.5 times faster than other job types. By 2030, it is predicted that 63% of all jobs will be comprised of soft skills roles, showcasing the growing demand for these competencies in the labor market​​.

  • Example: When hiring a salesperson, you want to find a candidate who’s familiar with the industry and has experience in sales, but is also resilient, knows how to negotiate and has excellent verbal communication abilities.
  • Example: If you value accountability and you want to have employees who can take initiative, it’s important to look for candidates who are not afraid to take ownership of their job, who are decisive and have a problem-solving aptitude.

How to evaluate soft skills in the workplace

Identifying and assessing soft skills in candidates is no easy feat: those qualities are often intangible and can’t be measured by simply looking at what soft skills each candidate includes in their resume. Besides, candidates will try to present themselves as positively as possible during interviews, so it’s your job to dig deeper to uncover what they can really bring to the table in terms of soft skills.

1. Know what you’re looking for in potential hires beforehand and ask all candidates the same questions.

Before starting your interview process for an open role, consider what kind of soft skills are important in this role and prepare specific questions to assess those skills. This step is important for you to evaluate all candidates objectively. For example, in a sales role, good communication is key. By preparing specific questions that evaluate how candidates use their communication skills on the job, you’re more likely to find someone who can actually communicate with clients effectively, instead of hiring someone who only appears so (e.g. because they’re extroverted).

3. Use hypothetical scenarios, games and activities that test specific abilities.

Often, it’s useful to simulate job duties to test how candidates would approach regular tasks and challenges. That’s because each job, team and company is different, so you want to find a candidate who fits your unique environment. For example, a role-playing activity can help you assess whether salespeople have the negotiation skills you’re specifically looking for. Or, you can use a game-based exercise to identify candidates who solve problems creatively.

Here are some examples:

  • If you had two important deadlines coming up, how would you prioritize your tasks?
  • If one of your team members was underperforming, how would you give them feedback?

4. Pay attention to candidates’ answers and reactions during interviews

You can learn a lot about candidates’ soft skills through job-specific questions and assignments. Even if you want to primarily test candidates’ knowledge and hard skills, you can still notice strong and weak points in soft skills, too. For example, one candidate might claim to have excellent attention to detail, but if their written assignment has many typos and errors, then that’s a red flag. Likewise, when a candidate gives you clear, well-structured answers, it’s a hint they’re good communicators.

To form an objective opinion on candidates’ soft skills and abilities, make sure you take everything into consideration: from the way they interact with you during interviews to their performance on job-related tasks. This way, you’ll be more confident you select the most competent employees, but also those who fit well to your work environment.

For example, instead of writing “ helped solve problems,” you could write “ identified and solved critical issues.”

Other phrases that use strong action verbs are:

2. Quantify your accomplishments

It’s one thing to say you have strong problem-solving skills, but it’s even better to back it up with hard numbers . 

Whenever possible on your resume, include metrics that show just how effective you are at solving problems. For example, “reduced customer complaints by 30%.”

Here are some other ways to show off numbers: 

  • Managed a budget of $200,000 and reduced expenses by 10%.

There are many problems that cannot be solved with conventional methods.

In many cases, problems can’t be solved by one person working alone.

For example, a you could highlight your financial analyst skills by saying you “worked cross-functionally to launch an annual industry report.”

Other examples include:

  • Brought together stakeholders with different objectives and helped them find common ground.
  • Helped resolved misunderstandings between departments, resulting in a 30% increase in sales.
  • Facilitated weekly team meetings to ensure consistent communication and successful completion of tasks.

Is your resume applicant tracking system friendly?

When interviewers ask about your problem-solving skills, they are looking for specific examples of how you have identified and solved problems in the past. 

These problem-solving examples could be from work, from your studies, or even taken from your personal life!

Here are some tips on how to highlight your problem-solving skills in a job interview:

1. Describe your process

When describing how you solved a problem, be sure to include all the steps you took in your explanation. This will show the interviewer that you are systematic and thorough in your approach.

For example, you can highlight your account manager skills by saying something like: 

“I began by analyzing our current sales figures and identifying where we were losing customers. I then looked at our marketing strategy and identified areas where we could improve. Finally, I implemented a new marketing strategy and monitored the results closely. This led to a significant increase in sales within six months.”

2. Use problem-solving skills in the interview itself

Some interviewers will ask you to solve a problem on the spot as part of the interview process. This is usually done to assess your analytical and critical thinking skills. 

For example, someone applying for a job as a business analyst may be asked to review a company’s financial reports and identify areas of concern.

When solving problems in an interview, be sure to think out loud so the interviewer can understand your thought process. 

If you’re not sure of the answer, don’t be afraid to say so. This shows that you’re willing to admit when you don’t know something and are willing to learn.

3. Make connections to responsibilities included in the new job

Be sure to highlight how your problem-solving skills will be relevant to the responsibilities of the position you’re applying for. 

For example, if you’re applying for a job as a restaurant server, you might talk about a time when you had to diffuse a difficult customer situation.

If you make connections between your past experiences and the new job, it shows the interviewer that you’re qualified for the position and that you’re excited about the opportunity to use your skills in a new way.

4. Use specific examples and data

When describing how you used your problem-solving skills in the past, mention specific examples and support your claims with data.

This makes your story more convincing and shows that you’re not just making things up.

For example, if you’re claiming that you increased sales, be sure to back it up with sales reports, graphs, or even customer testimonials.

Improving your problem-solving skills can open up a variety of different career opportunities.

Here are some things you can do to strengthen your problem-solving abilities:

1. Be proactive

The first step to solving any problem is to recognize that it exists! 

This might seem obvious, but many people choose to ignore problems instead of facing them head-on.

Pay attention to the things that are going wrong in your life and work, and don’t sweep them under the rug.

2. Break down big problems into smaller ones

When you’re faced with a big problem, it can be overwhelming. But if you break the problem down into smaller pieces, it will be much easier to solve.

You’ve got a reputation for being the best coder or editor or mechanic or whatever, but it amounts to little if you don’t work well with others. Some of the most important professional skills for workers and employers alike simply can’t be taught in a classroom or measured on paper. These traits are called soft skills and they’re more crucial to your job search and overall career than you think.

One reason soft skills are so revered is that they help facilitate human connections. According to the Monster Future of Work Report, recruiters chose teamwork/ collaboration, communication, and problem solving/critical thinking—as the most important soft skills they're seeking in new hires . Recruiters also anticipate they’ll see the biggest gaps in communication, problem solving/critical thinking, and dependability in candidates.

What Are Soft Skills?

Unlike hard skills, which can be proven and measured, soft skills are intangible and difficult to quantify. Some examples of soft skills include analytical thinking, verbal and written communication, and leadership.

Research from the Society for Human Resource Management found that technical abilities like reading comprehension and mathematics aren't prized as much as soft skills , meaning you have to bring more to the table than, say, great sales numbers, coding languages, or test scores.

Basically, you can be the best at what you do, but if your soft skills aren’t cutting it, you’re limiting your chances of career success. Read on to learn which soft skills are critical to have firmly under your belt and what steps you can take to acquire them.

Why you need it: A company’s success is rarely dependent on one person doing something all by him/herself. Success is the result of many people working toward a common goal. Why employers look for it: Employers look to team players to help build a friendly office culture , which helps retain employees and, in turn attracts top talent. Furthermore, being able to collaborate well with your co-workers strengthens the quality of your work.

How to gain it: To generate goodwill, lend a hand when you see a co-worker in need. (“Hey, I know you have a ton on your plate. How can I help?”) Another way to build rapport is to cover for a colleague while she’s on vacation.

3. Adaptability

Why you need it: Soft skills help you manage reality. And the reality is, things don’t always go as planned. Successful leaders know how and when to be flexible, so instead of digging in your heels, you need to be able to pivot and find alternate solutions.

Why employers look for it: Change in the workplace is one of the only constants. Consequently, employers need workers who can adapt to industry shifts and keep the company current.

How to gain it: Push yourself to be an early adopter of change and someone who is able to meet new challenges. Inquire about training sessions and offer to teach your co-workers what you learn.

4. Problem solving

Why you need it: When something goes wrong, you can either complain or take action. Tip: It’s the latter that will get you noticed. Knowing how to think on your feet can make you indispensable to an employer.

Why employers look for it: Nothing is a given. Companies rely on problem solvers —a.k.a. their top performers—to navigate unexpected challenges.

How to gain it: Never bring your boss a problem without also bringing a solution. So when an issue crops up, sit down and think through how you’re going to address it before bringing it to your boss’ attention.

5. Critical observation

Why you need it: Data doesn’t mean much if you don’t know how to interpret it. Is there a pattern emerging? What else should you be looking for? Being a critical observer can help make you a better worker all around.

Why employers look for it: Companies need critical thinkers—people who bring a fresh perspective and offer intuitive solutions and ideas to help the company get a leg up on the competition or improve internal processes.

How to gain it: To be a critical observer, you need to be able to analyze information and put it to use. One tactic is to try to identify patterns of behavior at work. For example, does your boss actually read the weekly sales reports? What was her reaction to bad news in the staff meeting? What’s the best time of day to approach your manager with a question? By observing how people respond to the constant flow of information you can better understand the critical aspects of improving business operations.

6. Conflict resolution

Why you need it: Any time there's more than one employee in a business, there is going to be conflict. Therefore, being able to resolve issues with co-workers will help you maintain relationships with peers and work more effectively.

Why employers want it: Being able to constructively work through disagreements with people is a sure indicator of maturity—as well as leadership potential. Someone like this helps to promote a healthy, collaborative workplace.

How to gain it: The best way to resolve disagreements between co-workers is to address issues directly but delicately. So, when stepping in as a mediator , let both parties air their grievances in a judgment-free environment and then work together to find a solution.

7. Leadership

Why you need it: Having confidence and a clear vision can help influence your co-workers and get them on board with your ideas now and in the future. Displaying such leadership skills helps you gain visibility within an organization, which can lead to more opportunities for promotions or salary bumps.

Why employers want it: Bosses and managers are always looking for employees with leadership potential because those workers will one day be taking over the reins and building on the company’s legacy.

How to gain it: Being a leader isn’t merely about getting people to do what you want. Leadership means inspiring and helping others reach their full potential. One way to do that is to become the internship supervisor, which gives you the opportunity to manage people, learn how to motivate a team, and take on more responsibility.

RIT is offering a Professional Certificate in Soft Skills program, for learners looking to master the public speaking, critical thinking and teamwork skills that are a game-changer for career growth.

Professionals looking to master their soft skills—the tools that help you build relationships, improve productivity and boost collaboration in the workplace—can now do it online with Rochester Institute of Technology’s Soft Skills Professional Certificate program on edX. With the certificate, learners can showcase their newly earned skills that employers value.

EdX’s Professional Certificate programs are a series of in-demand offerings designed to build or advance critical skills for working professionals. Created by industry leaders and top universities, Professional Certificate programs offer a flexible, affordable way to develop the essential skills and actionable knowledge needed for today’s top jobs.

Enrollment is now open for the six offerings in the Soft Skills Professional Certificate program. The first offering begins Nov. 28.

The series will teach learners a blend of interpersonal, communication and social intelligence skills that are in high-demand across all industries and jobs. Offerings are taught by faculty in RIT’s School of Communication.

“Soft skills are power skills that require practice,” said Andrea Hickerson, director of RIT’s School of Communication and associate professor, who is teaching several of the Soft Skills offerings. “With this new program, professionals can hone the skills they need for promotions and management-level positions.”

The Professional Certificate program consists of six three-week offerings that can be taken any time after the start date:

  • Business Communication (starts Nov. 28)
  • Teamwork and Collaboration (starts Jan. 16, 2018)
  • Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving (starts March 6, 2018)
  • Storytelling in the Workplace (starts April 24, 2018)
  • Public Speaking (starts June 12, 2018)
  • Visual Presentation (starts July 31, 2018)

Within each offering, learners will have access to videos from the instructors, readings and discussion boards with other participants. Each module takes about seven hours per week to complete.

“We are honored to work with RIT to offer a Professional Certificate program in Soft Skills—which are in huge demand in today’s workplace,” said Anant Agarwal, edX CEO and MIT professor. “We’ve heard from our global community of learners that they are seeking courses to help them advance their careers. Professional Certificate programs on edX deliver career-relevant education in a flexible, affordable way, by focusing on the critical skills industry leaders and successful professionals are seeking today.”

The offerings in this program may be audited for free. For a fee, the program also allows learners to earn a verified Soft Skills Professional Certificate upon successful completion of all the offerings. Exclusive learning opportunities, including live events hosted by subject matter experts, will be available for verified learners who pursue the Professional Certificate.

“RIT has already been able to help more than a quarter million people through edX programs, and we’re excited to add our first Professional Certificate program,” said Thérèse Hannigan, director of RIT Online. “This is a great way for people to get connected to RIT and become aware of our terrific communication programs.”

Let us take an example where one of the nurses is good at inserting IVs, even in exceedingly difficult veins. Everyone relies on her when they have patients with difficult veins. However, communication is one of the important nurse skill requirements and if she lacks it, then it can cause problems.

Nurse Laila is dealing with the patient, Jhon. He has severe dehydration and difficult veins. With her nursing skill of finding difficult veins, she saves the life of this patient. But when the shifts end, she only gives information about IV and forgets to give minor but important details during shift handoff to another doctor. For example, if the patient is allergic to one of the medications, This can be dangerous for the patient. Hence it is important that nurse skills require efficient communication.

Nurse skill requirements also involve teamwork. To give the best possible care to their patients, it is important that nurses collaborate with their team of healthcare workers.

Let’s take a scenario where nurse Chelsea is busy talking to other staff members during break time. and there is a new admission in the hospital. Instead of familiarizing herself with the patient who is suffering from COPD, she continues to talk to her colleagues. Later, when rapid response, she realizes she has limited knowledge of the patient. This will delay her treatment of the patient as she is hesitant to do so as she doesn’t know much about the new patient.

Another nurse skill requirement is confidence. The nurse should be confident in her assessments. If she feels like that a patient is having signs of a heart attack, she must tell her team. Nurses should never fear being wrong. Skills to be a nurse require self-confidence.

Skills needed for nursing also cover emotional empathy.it is important for the nurses to understand the feelings of the patients. The nursing job is very stressful and requires physical and emotional demands. In order to give quality care to patients, nurses must possess this nursing skill.

Your old patient named Mark has an alcohol use disorder. He relapses and is admitted again to the hospital. It is important that you don’t judge him but instead show empathy. Understanding patients and showing empathy are essential skills needed for nursing.

Critical thinking and problem-solving are also important skills needed for nursing. Nurses deal with stressful situations, and they should have the ability to make quick and effective decisions. This nursing skill will help them to save the lives of patients.

Nurse Elsa is dealing with a patient who is complaining about abdominal pain. With her knowledge and assessment, she recognizes the potential signs of acute abdomen. She consults with a physician and with her critical thinking skills, the patient undergoes surgery for perforated bowel. This whole scenario highlights critical thinking and problem-solving as essential skills for a nurse.

What knowledge does a nurse need to solve conflicts? Nurses should know how to handle conflicts to promote a better healthcare environment. If you see that there is conflict arising among your coworkers due to workload, it’s important to solve these conflicts by actively listening and communicating.
