The wonderful summary thank you for this.

They did not belong to the family of gorden cook and you also didn’t write the spelling correct it’s James cook 😶😑

What’s funny is that Miss Fairchild said the line- “Money isn’t everything. But people always misunderstand things and remain stupid-” when she herself misunderstood the situation.

Who Did Patrick’s Homework Summary – Patrick was an active boy who loved outdoor games like hockey and basketball. He was an enthusiastic player but somehow was not interested in studies. Because of his poor interest in studies, he shirked work and was warned strictly by his teacher.

One day Patrick observed his cat playing with a doll. But when he looked at it closely, he found that it was a small man-elf (a supernatural being). He was wearing a woolen shirt, a tall hat, and breeches. He was scared of a cat and needed help. He pleaded (requested) Patrick to save him and in return, he promised to grant him a wish.

Patrick felt happy and called himself a fortunate one. He asked the elf to do his homework in return. Though the elf was not ready for it yet, he offered to do this for him for 35 days (one semester).

However, a  problem arose when the elf told that he knew nothing of maths and history. He needed help to do these subjects. Patrick agreed and brought many books to read and consult. He sat next to the elf and put in a hard toll to complete the work.

Exactly after 35 days when the semester was over, the elf went away quietly. Patrick scored a grade ‘A’ in all the subjects. Everyone appreciated him. He became a very different person who was hardworking, generous, and an exemplary boy.

Patrick thought it is of who helped him score high but in reality, it was Patrick himself who did all the good and changed his score.

Passage: PATRICK never did homework. “Too boring,” he said. He played hockey and basketball and Nintendo instead. His teachers told him, “Patrick! Do your homework or you won’t learn a thing.” And it’s true, sometimes he did feel like an ignoramus. But what could he do? He hated homework.

Word Meaning Nintendo: a video game Ignoramus:   an ignorant person, who lacks education

Explanation of the Passage – Patrick never did his homework because he found it boring. Instead, he played outdoor games like hockey and basketball. He also liked to play video games like Nintendo. His teacher warned him to complete his homework otherwise, he won’t be able to learn anything. It was a fact because at times, he used to feel like an ignorant person who was completely helpless in this regard. He had no interest in studies and homework.

Passage – Then one day he found his cat playing with a little doll and he grabbed it away. To his surprise, it wasn’t a doll at all, but a man of the tiniest size. He had a little wool shirt with old-fashioned britches and a tall hat much like a witch’s. He yelled, “Save me! Don’t give me back to that cat. I’ll grant you a wish, I promise you that.”

Word Meaning britches: breeches, or short trousers. The writer here spells it, for fun, to rhyme with the word ‘witch’s’. grabbed: caught tiniest: smallest

Explanation of the Passage – One day he observed his cat playing with a doll and was surprised to find that it wasn’t a doll, rather it was a man of the smallest size. It was wearing a woollen shirt with an old-fashioned trousers and a tall hat which made him look like a witch. The doll cried and requested Patrick to save him and not to send him back to the cat. In return, the doll promised Patrick to fulfill his wish.

Passage – Patrick couldn’t believe his luck to have the answer to all of his problems here . He said, “Only if you do all my homework till the end of the semester, that’s 35 days. If you do a good enough job, I could even get A’s.”

Word Meaning Lucky: fortunate problems: difficulties semester: a half or quarter term in school or university

Explanation of the Passage –  It was difficult for Patrick to accept that he was so fortunate to get an answer or solution to all his difficulties through this tiny man. So he asked him if he could do his homework till the end of the semester, that is a period of 35 days to help him score ‘A’ grade. Patrick was thinking that with elf’s help ,he can improve his grades.

Passage – The little man’s face wrinkled like a dishcloth thrown in the hamper. He kicked his legs and doubled his fists and he grimaced and scowled and  pursed his lips, “Oh, am I cursed! But I’ll do it.”

Word Meaning dishcloth: a cloth used for washing dishes hamper: a basket with a lid Grimaced, scowled, pursed his lips: his face had these expressions, showing disgust, anger and disapproval Wrinkled : slight folds on skin because of old age Cursed: ill fated

Explanation of the Passage –  After hearing this, the little man’s face gave a look of cloth lying in the basket used for washing dishes. He showed his disapproval for the work by kicking legs, doubling his fists and making unhappy faces. He asked if he was that unfortunate to do that task. But he promised to do the work.

Passage – And true to his word, that little elf began to do Patrick’s homework. Except there was one glitch. The elf didn’t always know what to do and he needed help. “Help me! Help me!” he’d say. And Patrick would have to help — in whatever way.“ I don’t know this word,” the elf squeaked while reading Patrick’s homework. “Get me a dictionary. No, what’s even better, look up the word and sound it out by each letter.”

Word Meaning glitch (an informal word): a fault in a machine that prevents it from working properly; here, hitch or problem elf : a super -natural creature squeaked : cried aloud

Explanation of the Passage –  And keeping his word, the elf ( super-natural creature) started doing his home-work. But sometimes, he needed help as he didn’t know all things. Then Patrick had to help him. Sometimes while reading Patrick’s home- work  the elf would  say crying aloud that he doesn’t know the meaning of that word so give him a dictionary or something that can help him to identify the sound of each letter as well as word.

Passage – When it came to maths, Patrick was out of luck. “What are times tables?” the elf shrieked. “We elves never need that And addition and subtraction and division and fractions? Here, sit down beside me, you simply must guide me.” Elves know nothing of human history, to them it’s a mystery. So the little elf, already a shouter, just got louder. “Go to the library, I need books. More and more books. And you can help me read them too.”

Word meaning shrieked: gave a short, high-pitched cry

Explanation of the Passage – The elf knew nothing of maths. All concepts of maths were completely strange or odd things for him. Patrick was unfortunate in this matter. The elf explained that elves never needed mathematical concepts like addition, subtraction, division and fractions. So Patrick had to sit next to him to guide. Even he did not know anything of human history, it was completely strange to him. Thus, he screamed at him to visit the library, get him more books and help him to read as well.

patricks homework

Passage – As a matter of fact, every day in every way that little elf was a nag! Patrick was working harder than ever and was it a drag! He was staying up nights, had never felt so weary, was going to school with his eyes puffed and bleary.

Word Meaning nag: one who troubles someone all the time by complaining or asking them to do something drag (an informal word): something dull and uninteresting Weary : extreme tiredness Bleary.: looking dull because of tiredness

Explanation of the Passage – Actually, that little creature was either troubling, complaining or asking Patrick to do something or the other all the time. Patrick was not able to sleep and was awake for nights together. He had never felt so tired before and was going to school with his dull looking eyes.

Passage – Finally, the last day of school arrived and the elf was free to go.  As for homework, there was no more, so he quietly and slyly slipped out the back door.

Word Meaning slyly: secretively

Explanation of the Passage – Finally, it was the last day of school and the elf had complete freedom to go as there was no more homework to do. So, without speaking anything, in a secretive manner,  he moved out from the back door.

Passage – Patrick got his A’s; his classmates were amazed; his teachers smiled and were full of praise. And his parents  wondered what had happened to Patrick? He was now the model kid who Cleaned his room, did his chores, was cheerful, never rude, like he had developed a whole new attitude.

Word Meaning kid (an informal word): a child chores: work that must be done everyday, often boring attitude: a feeling about someone or something amazed: surprised

Explanation of the Passage –  Patrick scored ‘A” grade. His classmates  were surprised, teachers were full of appreciation and parents were trying to know what made him so perfect, what had happened to him? He became an exemplary child who cleaned his room himself, did all his work, became a  happy child who was never rude and developed a complete new self and look.

Passage – You see, in the end, Patrick still thought he’d made that tiny man do all his homework. But I’ll share a secret, just between you and me. It wasn’t the elf; Patrick had done it himself!

Explanation of the Passage –  Concluding, I would like to say that it was not the elf but Patrick himself who did his work. The elf just propelled him to do everything.

Ans: 1. I am not very fond of keeping my room clean and tidy. 2. But my sister does all this for me. 3. I have not developed a liking for non-veg. 4. But my elder brother does not support me. 5. Writing  (Page 13) A. This story has a lot of rhyming words, as a poem does. Can you write out some parts of it like a poem, so that the rhymes come at the end of separate lines? For example: Patrick never did homework. ‘Too boring”, he said. He played baseball and Hockey and Nintendo instead. Ans. The man of the tiniest size was true to his word and wise Patrick saved the elf from the cat The elf promised to do all that Patrick loved sports and hated homework He wasted his time and studies shirk

B. Look at these sentences. 1.‘Too boring,” he said. 2. Cleaned his room, did his chores. When we speak we often leave out words that can easily be guessed. We do not do this when we write unless we are trying to write as we speak (as in the story). So, if we were to write carefully, we would say:

  • Homework is too boring, he said.
  • He cleaned his room and did his chores.

C. Rewrite the following incomplete sentences carefully, so that the reader does not have to guess what is left out. 1.more and more books. 2.too difficult. 3.got up late, missed the bus. 4.solved the mystery.

Ans: 1. The writers and poets read more and more books. 2. This personal question is too difficult to answer. 3. When I got up late yesterday morning, I missed the school bus. 4. Lord Krishna solved the mystery of life after .death.

Introduction

This chapter tells the story of a schoolboy named Patrick, who hates homework. But eventually, he scores good grades in his class and also learns other good habits.

Patrick is a schoolboy. Like many students, he fears and dislikes homework. He chooses to play games instead of completing the work his teachers assign. Due to this, he is scolded in school as well as at home. This continues until one day Patrick finds an elf, that is, a tiny toy man who requests to be saved from Patrick’s cat, in return for a wish. Patrick saves the elf and expresses his wish.

He wishes to get all his homework done by the elf till the semester ends. The elf grows angry but grants the wish. But being an elf, he lacks the knowledge required to spell words correctly. Neither does he know mathematics tables, nor can he perform addition and subtraction operations. He also claims to have no knowledge of history.

Patrick’s story shows how a person can achieve success by being hard-working and self-dependent. It is revealed at the end that the elf man was only a figment of Patrick’s imagination. In reality, the transformation is caused by Patrick’s own efforts. This answers the titular question “Who did Patrick’s homework?” and teaches the value of self-help.

Carol Moore's short story is named "Who Did Patrick's Homework?" in which Patrick is the main character. Patrick was a slacker at school. He disliked doing his homework. He was sharp-minded and intelligent. One day, he noticed his cat playing with a small doll, but it turned out to be Elf like a tiny man. When he protected the Elf from the cat, the Elf offered Patrick a wish. Patrick wished to do his homework for school.

Anne Carroll Moore (July 12, 1871 - January 20, 1961) was an educator, writer, and advocate for children's libraries in America. She was named Annie after an aunt, and when she was in her fifties, she formally changed her name to Anne to prevent confusion with Annie E. Moore, another woman who published writings about juvenile libraries at the time. From 1906 through 1941, she was the chief of children's services at the New York City public library system. Moore also wrote Nicholas: A Manhattan Christmas Story, one of two Newbery Medal nominees in 1925.

Patrick despised doing his schoolwork. He found it tiresome. He enjoyed playing video games. He enjoyed playing basketball, hockey, and Nintendo. His teachers notified him that he needed to finish his homework. Otherwise, he would become an ignorant person. At times, he believed it. On the other hand, Patrick couldn't help himself. One day, Patrick noticed his cat playing with a little doll. He grabbed the doll. He was surprised to discover that the doll turned out to be a tiny man. This man was dressed in old-fashioned britches. His hat was as tall as a witch's. A tiny man cried by saying, "Save me." In exchange, he promised to grant Patrick's wish. Patrick saved the tiny man. He was pleased.

Patrick was not lazy. He used to enjoy playing hockey and basketball but disliked doing his homework. He was uninterested in academics and was told by teachers that he would only learn something if he did his homework. Patrick noticed his cat playing with a doll one day, but it was a small figure, an elf. The Elf wore a tall hat, woolen shirt, and breeches. He was in danger and begged for help. Patrick saved him and was allowed a wish in return.

The plot revolves around Patrick, a little boy who never completes homework. Patrick is fortunate to come across an elf who promises that he will grant him a wish in return for saving his life. Patrick expects him to complete his homework and feels happy with his good fortune. The Elf pretends he needs assistance and makes Patrick work hard and read additional books until his homework is finished. Thus, the writer beautifully shows us that hard work can only produce magical results and portrays 'hard work is the key to success.'

Patrick's experience shows how hard effort and self-reliance can lead to success. The elf-man is eventually revealed to be an illusion of Patrick's imagination. In truth, Patrick's efforts are responsible for the change. This promotes the idea of self-dependence and answers the title question, "Who did Patrick's homework?". Finally, someone did Patrick's homework. However, with additional information and context, we will know who completed the homework.

One day he found his cat playing with a little doll and he snatched it away. He was surprised to see it was not a doll. It was a man of the smallest size. He had a little wool shirt with old-fashioned breeches and a high tall hat like a witch’s. The tiniest man shouted for help and said that he should not be given back to the cat. He promised to give Patrick a wish in return for the help.

Patrick could not believe his luck. He found the answer to all his problems. He asked the little elf to do his homework till the end of the term which was for thirty-five days. And if he did a good enough job, he could even get A’s. The little man felt angry. He kicked his legs and doubled his fists. He even cursed Patrick. But he agreed to do the homework.

The little man kept his promise and began to do Patrick’s homework. The small man did not always know what to do and he needed Patrick’s help. He cried for help and Patrick had to help him. Once the small man did not know the meaning of a word while doing Patrick’s homework. He wanted a dictionary. He asked Patrick to look up the word and made him speak it out by each letter.

When it was the turn of Maths, Patrick was not lucky. The smallest man does not know much about the subject and wanted to be guided by Patrick. He said that elves did not know human history. Every day the smallest man used to trouble Patrick by asking him to do one thing or the other. Patrick had to work harder than ever before. He found this very dull and uninteresting. He had to keep awake at night. He used to feel tired. He used to go to school with sleepy eyes. The little made Patrick work harder than before by his smart tactics.

Finally, the last day of school came. The elf was free to go because there was no more homework to be done. He quietly slipped out of the back door. Patrick got an A grade in the examination. His teachers smiled and were full of praise. Patrick’s parents wondered how Patrick had done so well. He was now the model child. He started cleaning his room, did all the things he was to do, was always cheerful, and never rude to anyone. He had developed a whole new attitude.

Patrick thought that he had made the tiny man do all the homework for him. The writer says that it was not the elf (the tiny man) who had done any work. It was Patrick himself who had done it himself.

What is Project 2025? The Presidential Transition Project explained.

The detailed plan to dismantle and reconstruct the government laid out by  conservative groups  known as the 2025 Presidential Transition Project has critics up in arms over its " apocalyptic " and " authoritarian " nature.

The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank in Washington, D.C., led an effort to create the more than 900-page  "Mandate for Leadership,"  published in April 2023, reimagining the executive branch and presented a plan to overhaul several federal government agencies, including the FBI, for the country's next conservative president to follow.

More: Project 2025 head says 'second American Revolution' will be 'bloodless if the left allows'

According to the Project's website, the playbook provides a governing agenda and a lineup of people ready to implement it to "rescue the country from the grip of the radical Left." It includes a domestic and  foreign policy  agenda, a list of personnel, training, and a 180-day playbook.

"It is not enough for conservatives to win elections," Project 2025  said on its website . "With the right conservative policy recommendations and properly vetted and trained personnel to implement them, we will take back our government."

Project 2025's Director is  Paul Dans , who served as the U.S. Office of Personnel Management chief of staff in former President Donald Trump's administration. Although it mentions Trump by name, the handbook does not directly assume the Republican party's presumptive nominee will be the one to carry out its agenda.

What is in Project 2025?

The mandate attacks several policies that former President Barack Obama and President Joe Biden instituted, including  student loan forgiveness  and  Obamacare . It simultaneously calls for expanded executive power for the commander-in-chief while criticizing what Project 2025 members perceive as overreaches by the Biden administration.

"Presidents should not issue mask or vaccine mandates, arbitrarily transfer student loan debt, or issue monarchical mandates of any sort," the plan reads. "Legislatures make the laws in a republic, not executives."

The playbook calls for the reinstatement of a  Trump executive order  augmenting a president's power to hire and fire federal officials by replacing civil servants with political appointees throughout government.

It also seeks to repeal aspects of the  Affordable Care Act , urge the Food and Drug Administration to reverse the  approval of abortion pills , and further empower Immigration and Customs Enforcement to  deport undocumented immigrants .

The plan also specifically addresses LGBTQ+ issues and attacks "radical gender ideology." In addition to calling for an end to the Department of Education, it suggests legislation that would forbid educators from using transgender students' names or pronouns without written permission from their guardians. It also appears to oppose same-sex marriage and gay couples adopting children by seeking to "maintain a biblically based, social science-reinforced definition of marriage and family."

Project 2025 generates concern

Project 2025 has received substantial criticism from Democrats, including  Representative Jasmine Crockett , D-Texas, who called out the controversial plan during a congressional hearing last month.

"I don't know why or how anybody can support Project 2025," Crockett said. "In the United States of America, dictatorships are never funny, and Project 2025 is giving the playbook for authoritarianism as well as the next dictator to come in."

Progressive Democrat U.S. Representative Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts called it a "far-right manifesto" in a  post on TikTok . The Biden campaign captioned a video detailing Project 2025, stating it "needs more attention."
