What is a research proposal
What is a research proposal?
A research proposal is a document that outlines the approach a researcher will take in order to find a solution to a specific problem . In other words, a research proposal is a summary of what you want to research, why you want to research the problem, as well as how you think the problem will be solved. The research proposal usually justifies the need for the study while presenting already existing literature and information on your topic. Students and researchers need the research proposal to apply for either sponsorship or approval to embark on the proposed study.

The function of a research proposal
The main function of a proposal is to convice the reader that your proposed study is essential and relevant to your field of study. It is meant to show the focus of your research as well as the methods to be used to achieve the study's objectives .It is important, therefore, that you read widely on your topic to get familiar with the previous research that has been done to be able to refine your project and indicate its relevance and value to existing research.

Annual and Completion Reports
Ethics approval is normally granted for a period of three years. As a condition of ethics approval, UniSA HREC (and the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research) requires researchers to provide an annual progress report and a summative report on completion of the project.
The National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research requires that researchers report, at least annually, on:
- progress to date, or outcome in the case of completed research
- maintenance and security of records
- compliance with the approved proposal
- compliance with any conditions of approval
A project is deemed complete when either
- The thesis has been submitted, or
- A summary of results can be provided in the final report.
If none of these project completion conditions are met, then you must complete an annual project progress report.
Please complete the Annual Report/Extension Request/Project Completion form and send it to the Human Research Ethics Office ( [email protected] ) as per the following:
- Project Progress reports: every 12 months after the listed commencement date for the approved protocol
- Project completion: within 3 months of the project being deemed completed.

Description : A report is usually a formal account of a matter that has been investigated or considered. They may be produced periodically (e.g. an annual report), or on an ad hoc basis, e.g. Student visa program 2011 report by Michael Knight.
- Reports can be produced by organisations, for example universities, government departments, companies, associations; or individuals, for example Vice Chancellor's report.
- If you cite the authoring body frequently in-text, introduce and then use an abbreviation for subsequent citations, e.g. (UniSA 2012).
