One-year full-time Programme World-renowned faculty Foundational and concentration courses L aw clinics ,  workshops  and  tutorials Focus on professional skills Network-building events Located in Geneva

In theory, there is no gap between the theory and the practice of public international law. In practice, there is. The LL.M. in International Law at the Geneva Graduate Institute is designed to bridge this gap. Founded in 1927, the Graduate Institute is Europe's oldest school of international affairs. Since the time of Hans Kelsen, the Institute's International Law Department has been at the forefront of public international law in theory and practice.

The LL.M. in International Law is a one-year postgraduate degree course that provides advanced, comprehensive and practice-oriented training in international law. Students in the LL.M. Programme gain exposure to world-renowned faculty, benefit from being at the heart of international legal affairs in Geneva, and share ideas with other participants from different legal backgrounds and perspectives.

The Programme allows students to tailor their studies according to their particular interests, while compulsory courses provide a firm grounding in public international law. Our courses are designed to facilitate a deeper exploration of the most pressing questions in the field with professors and practitioners at the cutting edge of international law.

The LL.M. in International Law is also profoundly committed to developing the transferable skills necessary to succeed professionally. To this end, law clinics, workshops on legal writing, presentation skills and career development, and a variety of network-building events provide the best possible springboard to launch or advance a career in international law.

1

The structure and content of the LL.M. in International Law reflects the development of public international law in practice over recent years. There is an increasing need for international lawyers to master not just one concentration area in the field but also the core foundations of the international legal system, which in turn will allow them to adapt to different concentration areas.

The Programme comprises both compulsory and elective, general and specific international law courses. Not only does this provide students with a firm basis in public international law, but it also permits them to engage with the areas of international law that interest them most. In addition to their international law courses, students also have the opportunity to discuss legal problems in concentration streams, develop their professional skills in practical workshops and write an LL.M. paper. Moreover, LL.M. participants undertake real legal work for a beneficiary as part of a law clinic and gain exposure to leading practitioners through the courses and guest lectures.

Foundational Courses

This course covers the essential content of international law. It is divided into the following segments:

International Law Making - Andrea Bianchi

Participants in International Legal Processes - Fuad Zarbiyev

The International Law of Responsibility - Santiago Villalpando

International Dispute Settlement - Marcelo Kohen

The International Law of State Jurisdiction - Mamadou Hébié

International Institutional Law - Nico Krisch

This course combines lectures by Graduate Institute faculty with insights from a wide-range of  practitioners  in both the public and private sectors. It covers both  substance  and  skills , with a focus on how international law is used by a variety of organisations as well as how it is enforced through different means, ranging from monitoring bodies, to complaint procedures and judicial bodies. Emphasis is placed on the practice of lawyers in respect of: (i) transactions, (ii) multilateral affairs and (iii) dispute settlement.

The Law of the Sea - Liesbeth Lijnzaad

Treaty Interpretation - Constantinos Salonidis and Joseph Klingler

Immunities - Philippa Webb

International Law in Domestic Courts - Philippa Webb

Concentration streams

In addition to the general courses, students choose one of the following concentration streams:

In the last decade the international protection of the environment has emerged as one of the main priorities of governments, international organisations and the private sector. This stream trains students to understand this complex area of international law, as well as frameworks regarding climate change and the use of natural resources, particularly in connection with water and food security. It also explores how environmental change and governance affects and intersects with other areas of law such as human rights. Special emphasis is placed on the rules governing the entitlement to and distribution of these resources and on real-life disputes where such rules have been applied.

Climate Change and the Energy Transition in International Law - Jorge E. Viñuales

Compliance Mechanisms under Environment Treaties - Makane Moïse Mbengue

Environmental Litigation: International, Transnational and Comparative Aspects - Anne Saab

Principles of International Environmental Law - Laurence Boisson de Chazournes

*Please note that this is only an indicative list of courses that have been offered in recent years and we cannot guarantee that they will be offered every year.

The IEL concentration stream trains students to understand the regulation of international economic relations through the prisms of international trade, investment and intellectual property law. Students analyse the highly complex regulatory frameworks applicable to trade and foreign direct investment transactions and the growing body of case-law arising from a variety of dispute settlement mechanisms, such as the WTO Dispute Settlement Body or investment arbitration.

The Law and Policy of Free Trade Agreements - Kathleen Claussen

Investor-State Arbitration - August Reinisch

International Commercial Arbitration - Thomas Schultz

International Taxation - Xavier Oberson

This stream trains students to understand the various international legal frameworks applicable to the protection of people, as well as their increasing interaction. From a substantive perspective, students gain exposure to human rights, humanitarian law, migration law and refugee law. Particular emphasis is placed on how these different bodies of law interact with each other to strengthen the protection offered to refugees, internally displaced persons, minorities and the victims of armed conflict.

International Human Rights and Litigation - Yuval Shany

International Criminal Law – Giulia Pinzauti

International Humanitarian Law: The Protection of Victims of Armed Conflict - Yasmin Naqvi and Andrew Clapham

The Movement of Persons Across Borders in International Law - Vincent Chetail

All Concentration streams include

1) Concentration modules

In these sessions, students have the opportunity to discuss a selection of readings in a small group with a professor. They allow students to explore, debate and ask deeper questions on topics of their concentration

2) Law clinic

Students complete a practical assignment for a real client. They work in groups and under the supervision of professors on specific legal questions related to their specialty stream that have been posed by external clients, such as international organisations, governments or NGOs. In addition, skills sessions are held with invited professionals to improve legal writing and oral presentation skills. At the end of the semester, the groups submit written legal memoranda and orally present their projects in class in the presence of the client and invited guests.

Students choose two semester-long courses from those offered by the International Law Department.

Students write a 8,000-word paper on a topic of their interest. It should be an original piece of research and be oriented for publication in practitioner journals.

Workshops are organised with professionals and experts, providing students with an opportunity to acquire practical knowledge, develop professional skils and receive advice on career development.

Immersion work

Guest lectures, roundtables, colloquia and institution visits all allow students to engage in a very practical way with the leading experts, pressing topics and fundamental organs of international law.

Associate Attorney, Omnia Strategy LLP

"The LL.M. in International Law allowed me to develop and foster my academic and practical knowledge on various international law topics. Studying at the Graduate Institute allowed me to interact and connect with students and professors worldwide. Situated in a truly bilingual Institution and city, the LL.M. programme also helped me to perfect my English language skills as well as develop my French language skills.

I graduated with honours in June 2018 and was hired immediately by a public international law firm in London, Volterra Fietta, as a Staff Lawyer. I have recently joined Omnia Strategy, a London-based law firm founded by Cherie Blair CBE, QC, specialising in international dispute resolution, where I work as an associate attorney.

I strongly recommend the LL.M. in International Law at the Graduate Institute to lawyers keen to embrace a holistic approach to international law and develop a truly international legal career. "

Maria Cecilia Ercole

Human Rights Officer, Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights

"I had the privilege to be part of the first class of the LL.M programme in International Law at the Graduate Institute (2013-2014). I only have words of gratitude and invaluable memories from the Institute, and I would recommend this programme to any law practitioner seeking to deepen their knowledge of international law in a unique international setting.

As an Argentinian human rights lawyer, and after having worked in Argentina and the US, deciding to come and study at the IHEID in Geneva was, so far, one of my wisest career choices. Exposure to outstanding faculty, guest speakers and lecturers from around the world and a culturally diverse group of students from which I ended up learning more than I could imagine made my LL.M experience unforgettable.

Today, I live in Geneva and have been working for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights for more than five years."

Global Refugee Forum Coordination Team, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees

" I came to Geneva from Australia in the summer of 2015, hoping to use the LL.M. programme as a springboard to a career in international law. The combination of coursework with leading academics and practitioners, exercises focused on professional development, and seemingly endless public events on cutting-edge topics at the Graduate Institute and throughout Geneva, the LL.M. gave me a solid basis for building an international career. Indeed, the course offering was so rich that I ended up attending classes for many more courses than I was enrolled in.

Since completing the programme, I have spent almost three years with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, working on developing the Global Compact on Refugees and now the first-ever Global Refugee Forum. It has been enormously fulfilling work and would not have been possible if I had not undertaken the LL.M. In International Law at the Graduate Institute. "

D.Phil Candidate, University of Oxford

"I spent a stimulating, exciting and happy year in Geneva during my LL.M. at the Graduate Institute. I was taught by many leading academics and professionals from different areas of international law and befriended some of the most wonderful people I've met in my life.

The workload was challenging but manageable. The small size of our class allowed me to engage in substantial and intense discussions with professors and classmates.

My year in Geneva was a great asset for my current research that I am conducting as a D.Phil candidate at the University of Oxford. The diverse perspectives of international law I gained from this programme helped to enrich my understanding of international law."

Trainee Solicitor, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer

" The LL.M in International Law at the Graduate Institute has one main advantage over any other LL.M - that is the small class size. I chose the LL.M in International Law because I wanted close contact with professors and to be in the heart of Geneva. Before pursuing my LL.M, I received an offer of a training contract with the international law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, which meant that my LL.M year became entirely focused on making the most of the programme, building up my knowledge in international economic law and, specifically, investment arbitration.

The faculty at the Graduate Institute is unparalleled as far as international law is concerned. The programme offers you the flexibility to make what you want of it. I deep-dived into the reading lists in the first semester, carefully selected to give you broad and specialist knowledge in general public international law. The second semester was equally rewarding and allowed students to engage with international institutions via the LL.M. clinic. Our beneficiary was UNCTAD's International Investment Agreements section. My group was supervised by Professor Makane Mbengue, who had participated in the negotiations of the Code Pan-Africain des Investissements. It was an experience that was both academic and practical, aiming at providing a technical note for negotiators of international investment agreements that aimed to tailor the drafting agreements in such a way that negotiators would be aware of the liabilities they were assuming and the sovereign powers they were limiting in ratifying these agreements.

The LL.M in International Law played a transformational role in widening my knowledge of international law and realising my potential."

Maria Gabriela Pereira

Maria Gabriela Pereira '19

Associate Legal Officer, International Organization for Migration

"I chose this LL.M program because I wanted to follow my passion and needed a significant shift in my career.

The Graduate Institute offers a concentration stream in human rights, international humanitarian law, international criminal law, and migration law, which suits my interests. The professors are esteemed lecturers highly qualified in their respective fields, but also very approachable and often helped us navigate our academic challenges in Geneva.

During the LL.M., I worked at the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights during the first semester and at Human Rights Watch during the second semester. It was my first peek into the United Nations system and my first time working for a non-governmental organization. These two experiences were precious and were stepping stones to other offers and opportunities. After the LL.M., I joined the International Organization for Migration as an Associate Legal Officer. I hope to continue this challenging, fulfilling path in international law. "

Ashley Stanley-Ryan

Ashley Stanley-Ryan '20

Associate, International Committee of the Red Cross

"I travelled from New Zealand to Geneva to pursue a career in international law, focusing on human protection and dignity. The LL.M. in International Law Programme at the Graduate Institute was the best possible place to gain the professional, academic, and personal knowledge necessary to begin that career. I applied to the LL.M. because of the strength of its teaching faculty, the opportunity to learn from leading international lawyers, and the excellent reputation of the Graduate Institute.

The LL.M. equips its students to excel in any field of international law through a strong generalist education and concentration streams taught by leading professionals. The faculty in the 2019-2020 Protection of the Individual concentration stream included a member of the Human Rights Committee and an advisor to several international organisations. In the core courses, lecturers ranged from notable academics to judges, law firm partners, legal advisors to international organisations, and barristers specialised in international litigation. The diversity of the faculty and courses provided both a breadth of knowledge and thought and excellent opportunities to learn about career paths in international law. I was fortunate to complete a UN internship and a challenging law clinic during my LL.M., which provided important professional experience.

After graduating with the LL.M., I began working as an associate at the ICRC. "

Giuseppe Poderati was one of the first students to complete the LL.M. in 2013 and thinks back:

"At the Geneva Graduate Institute, I gained in-depth theoretical knowledge about Advocacy in International Affairs and Public International Law with a focus on environmental-related issues. Professors and instructors of some of the highest calibre gave noteworthy lectures during my attendance at the executive education programmes. Also, I had the opportunity to sharpen and develop my technical skills with very talented colleagues worldwide. From this perspective, the Institute offers an academic environment conducive to learning and improving oneself."

PhD in Law, Geneva University , UK universities

Hey guys . Any body knows about doing a PhD in law in Geneva University ? Does any body know about the tuition fee and cost of living there ? Also is it possible to write the thesis in English instead of French ? How long does it take to get admission for a PhD from an English University ? Does any body know abut the quality of teaching in Bristol and Birkbeck University ? Thanks for your help

With regard to the Geneva questions - consult the website and admissions contacts. Admission to a PhD programme does not take long (usually between 1-2 months). Bristol and Birkbeck are both excellent universities, with great law departments. Bristol is particularly highly-regarded. If you are doing a PhD - you need not concern yourself with the quality of the teaching in the dept - as you won't be getting any. :-)

======= Date Modified 21 Aug 2008 10:07:21 ======= To echo the previous comment teaching quality isn't all that important for PhD student but to assess a UK university you can look at the RAE (research assessment exercise) score the last assessment for universities was in 2001 http://www.hero.ac.uk/rae/ however there is another one due out for 2008 but I have no idea when that is coming out. So that link might give you some information on the universities you mentioned 8-)

How a PhD in Sydney can take researchers to Harvard Law School

Ravi Prakash Vyas standing outside of the Sydney Law School at night

Ravi Prakash Vyas

Ravi Prakash Vyas, a PhD researcher at Sydney Law School, will be heading to Harvard for six months in August to complete his studies.

This unique opportunity stems from his pursuit of a PhD at Sydney Law School, which not only opens many different career pathways but also allows him to participate in the prestigious partnership with Harvard Law School.

Ravi's journey began with his decision to pursue his PhD at Sydney Law School.

“I chose Sydney Law School to pursue my PhD in International Law as it is one of the top-ranked law schools with leading academics in the world," he says.

“With Professor Ben Saul, Jeanne Huang, and Emily Crawford as my supervisory team, I could not have found a better place to pursue my research.”

When asked about the benefits of completing a PhD program at Sydney Law School, Yane Svetiev, the Associate Dean (Research Education), says,

“The PhD at Sydney Law School is a long-standing advanced research degree, which opens up many different career pathways. We have trained not only many academics in Australia and internationally but also practitioners working in legal practice and in national and international institutions, as well as judges. It has the added advantage of a rich network of alumni around the world.”

The HDR Partnership with Harvard

The HDR partnership allows one Sydney Law School PhD candidate per year to spend a semester at Harvard Law School during their doctoral degree.

This opportunity enables candidates to discuss and expose their research, test ideas before finalising their thesis, audit classes, attend seminars, and learn from other researchers. This structured exchange provides invaluable immersion in another institution, enhancing the doctoral experience.

Ravi explains that the application process involves two stages.

“First, HDR students must submit a statement of purpose detailing their research project, reasons for applying, the planned activities at Harvard Law, and how this experience will benefit their research and support timely degree completion,” he said.

“Additionally, they need a support letter from their supervisors endorsing the application. If selected by Sydney Law School, the student then applies to Harvard Law School, which is very competitive and accepts only one candidate per year from Sydney Law School.”

Ravi’s journey to Harvard

Ravi's research focuses on the convergence and divergence in China’s and India’s approaches to governing international peace and security and their impact on the future of international law, and therefore he is very excited about the opportunity to study at Harvard.

“An exchange at Harvard is an excellent opportunity for me, as it will provide me with new insights and fresh perspectives in my research area, exposing me to leading scholars and contemporary debates. It will also enable me to utilise one of the best libraries in the world for my research,” Ravi shares.

He plans to write his final chapters at Harvard, focusing on regional security and benefiting from Harvard's academic environment.

Advice for Researchers

Ravi strongly encourages future and current research scholars at Sydney Law School to take up this unique opportunity to undertake the HDR program at Harvard Law School.

“Discuss your plans with your supervisors early to decide the optimal timing for the exchange. Ensure your applications clearly demonstrate how your research aligns with Harvard's strengths and how you can both contribute to and benefit from the exchange,” he advises.

Additionally, he recommends applying for the Walter Reid Scholarship, which offers substantial support for research overseas, significantly facilitating the exchange experience.

“The support from the Walter Reid Scholarship at Sydney Law School has been instrumental. My time away will give me a break from my teaching and administrative commitments, which will be highly beneficial for my PhD progress and timely completion” he shares.

Expanding Opportunities

While the structured Harvard HDR exchange is unique, Sydney Law School encourages PhD candidates to seek opportunities to spend time at other institutions, either in Australia or internationally.

The Sydney Law School provides scholarships and funding to enable these experiences for researchers. Yane Svetiev expresses that the law school is actively seeking to join the University’s joint PhD programs with other international universities, such as Glasgow and Copenhagen, to further enhance exchange opportunities for their PhD candidates.

Ravi's journey from Sydney Law School to Harvard Law School is just one example of the opportunities available to researchers who choose to complete their PhDs at the Sydney Law School.

The Geneva Conventions and their Commentaries

The 1949 Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols are international treaties that contain the most important rules limiting the barbarity of war. They protect people who do not take part in the fighting (civilians, medics, aid workers) and those who can no longer fight (wounded, sick and shipwrecked troops, prisoners of war).

The rules of war in a nutshell

People have always used violence to settle disputes, and all cultures through the ages have believed that there have to be limits on that violence if we are to prevent wars from descending into barbarity. For instance, there are rules protecting non-participants, prisoners and the wounded. These rules are set out in international humanitarian law. Yes, even wars have limits.

What are the Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols?

The Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols are international treaties that contain the most important rules limiting the barbarity of war. They protect people who do not take part in the fighting (civilians, medics, aid workers) and those who can no longer fight (wounded, sick and shipwrecked troops, prisoners of war).

The Geneva Conventions – one of humanity's most important accomplishments of the last century – turned 70 on 12 August 2019. It was an opportunity to celebrate all the lives the Conventions have helped save, determine what further work needs to be done and remind the world of the importance of protecting people from the worst of war.

The Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols are at the core of international humanitarian law , the body of international law that regulates the conduct of armed conflict and seeks to limit its effects. They specifically protect people who are not taking part in the hostilities, including civilians, health workers and aid workers, and those who are no longer participating, such as wounded, sick and shipwrecked soldiers and prisoners of war. The Conventions and their Protocols call for measures to be taken to prevent or put an end to all breaches. They contain stringent rules to deal with what are known as "grave breaches". Those who commit grave breaches must be pursued and tried or extradited, whatever their nationality.

The ICRC has produced Commentaries on each of the Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols to promote better understanding of and respect for these vital treaties. They are currently being updated to incorporate developments in the application and interpretation of these treaties since their negotiation. The main aim of the updated Commentaries is to give people an understanding of the law as it is currently interpreted so that it can be applied effectively in today's armed conflicts. They are an essential tool for practitioners, reaffirming the continued relevance of the Conventions, generating respect for them and strengthening protection for people affected by armed conflict.

The Geneva Academy is a leading research and education institution in international humanitarian law (IHL) and human rights (HR) . Students enrolled at the Geneva Academy have the opportunity to be taught by leading academics in the field.

We have developed close collaborations with Geneva-based HR and humanitarian actors and regularly welcome their experts to events, policy discussions and taught sessions. Thanks to these collaborations, our LLM offers students numerous internship and networking opportunities , which allow them to gain practical experience and make useful contacts for their careers.

Our LLM in is one of the most innovative and intellectually challenging programmes in IHL and HR in armed conflict offered in Europe today.

We attract some of the most experienced and academically qualified students from around the world who are taught by leading academics and practitioners in the field.

The Geneva Academy proposes three distinct master’s programmes: an LLM in International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights, a Master of Advanced Studies in Transitional Justice, Human Rights and the Rule of Law and an Executive Master in International Law in Armed Conflicts.

Our LLM in International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights (60 ECTS) is a one-year full-time postgraduate degree. It is designed for intellectually curious and thoughtful candidates with a law degree who want to gain advanced, comprehensive and practical training in international humanitarian law, international human rights law in armed conflict, international criminal law and the interplay between them.

Our Master on Advanced Studies in Transitional Justice, Human Rights and the Rule of Law (60 ECTS) is a one-year full-time postgraduate degree. It is designed for highly qualified and open-minded candidates interested in acquiring high-level academic education and real-world practice in the field of transitional justice, human rights and the rule of law. Primary focus is placed on strengthening interdisciplinary knowledge and preparing students for future professional activities.

Our Executive Master in International Law in Armed Conflicts (60 ECTS) is a part-time programme designed for professionals - diplomats, legal advisers and professionals working in emergency situations who are active within the UN, other international organizations and NGOs- who want to gain a thorough understanding of the laws of war and how to apply them in complex contemporary contexts.

During the Spring Semester, as an alternative to optional courses, students can acquire first-hand professional experience of working in Geneva-based international organizations and NGOs, including the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), International Law Commission (ILC) or UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

LLM students also have the opportunity to participate in moot courts and public pleadings , a key exposure to a variety of simulations and role-plays in IHL and HR.

In 2016, the Geneva Academy team won the prestigious Jean-Pictet competition .

We offer a number of full scholarships (covering tuition fees and living expenses in Geneva for ten months) and partial scholarships (covering tuition fees).

Scholarships are awarded to outstanding candidates who lack the financial resources to cover the tuition fee and/or cost of living in Geneva.

As the LLM combines theoretical knowledge with internships and participation in moot courts, it provides a solid foundation for careers in the humanitarian and HR fields with international organizations, NGOs, international courts and tribunals, governments and academic institutions.

A significant number of LLM graduates work for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), in the field as well as at the Geneva headquarters, OHCHR, and other international organizations, NGOs, academic institutions, governments and international courts and tribunals.

During the year, our students also have access to a rich network of experts and practitioners and benefit from the Career Service of the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies .

The Geneva Academy does not offer PhD programmes. The LLM is however recognized by the University of Geneva and the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies as diplomas accepted to enter the PhD programmes. A number of graduates have been accepted in PhD programmes in other universities.

The LLM is a full-time programme and no distance-learning courses are offered.

An LLM/Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) (60 ECTS credits), awarded by the University of Geneva and the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies .

The LLM is open to candidates who have a full degree in law; a demonstrable interest in IHL and HR (i.e. internships, summer school, conferences attended, etc.); a good background in public international law and a sound command of English. A passive knowledge of French is an asset.

Candidates with degrees other than law but with a significant amount of training and experience in public international law, IHL, international human rights law and international criminal law can be accepted to the programme.

You may apply for the LLM during the last year of your degree. We will consider and assess your application based on a current transcript and grades obtained so far.

If we offer you a place, it will be conditional and you must send us your final results and evidence that your degree has been awarded as soon as these become available. The final decision will depend on whether you meet the specific requirements (minimum grades) that the Admissions Committee sets.

Previously unsuccessful candidates can reapply for the LLM. This will not have a negative influence on the selection process.

It is not possible to defer an offer. If you have to defer your enrollment in the programme, you will need to reapply and be considered with the new pool of candidates.

Students who are nationals of countries outside the European Union (EU) need a visa to enter Switzerland and to stay for more than three months.

When offered a place, students should consult the nearest Swiss embassy about the procedure. As the visa process may take several weeks to a few months, students should apply to the nearest Swiss embassy as soon as they have been admitted to the LLM.

Geneva offers an excellent quality of life: international quality of life indices consistently rank it among the top ten cities in the world.

As the European headquarters of the United Nations (UN) and the most active location in the world for multilateral diplomacy, Geneva is home to dozens of international organizations, more than 250 NGOs and 174 state representations, with more than 29,000 persons employed in this sector.

Every week, events organized by the Geneva Academy, Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, University of Geneva, international organizations and NGOs feature leading experts in IHL and HR. These events directly touch upon topics addressed in the LLM.

The city is clean and safe, with high-quality public facilities. It is easy to get around either by bicycle or public transport.

As a multicultural city with more than 180 nationalities, Geneva has a vibrant cultural life – a broad range of music concerts, music festivals, dance, opera, a variety of movies, art galleries, theatres and museums. A significant number of these cultural offers are accessible to English speakers.

Geneva Academy students have access to the University of Geneva’s sports and cultural facilities . At the Graduate Institute Ciné-club, students can attend free film screenings, which are followed by a debate.

To meet living costs , students will need a minimum of about 1,600–2,000 Swiss Francs per month if they live in a student's residence and 1,900–2,100 Swiss Francs per month if they live in a private residence.

Our students receive a residence permit on arrival, which allows nationals from the EU to work up to 15 hours a week. It is possible to work full-time (40 hours a week) during official holidays.

Non-EU students, however, are not allowed to undertake paid work for the first six months of their stay. After six months, they can work up to 15 hours a week, except during official holidays when it is possible to work full-time (40 hours a week).

As the LLM is a full-time intensive programme, we would not advise our students to find intensive employment that might interfere with their academic performance.

Students should start looking for accommodation as soon as they have been admitted to the programme.

The Geneva Academy can only provide a few places in student accommodation. We therefore encourage students to look for their own accommodation and not count on what is available via the Geneva Academy.

LLM students can extend their residence permit for up to six months following the completion of the programme (July to December), to undertake an internship or a temporary assignment  related to their studies in a Geneva-based institution, and/or to look for a job in Geneva or Switzerland.
