Good Newwz movie review: Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor deliver a complete entertainer
Good newwz movie review: akshay kumar, kareena kapoor khan, diljit dosanjh and kiara advani film is enjoyable despite having a serious subject at its heart..
Good Newwz Cast: Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Diljit Dosanjh, Kiara Advani Director: Raj Mehta
Good Newwz brings glad tidings– we get a talented cast led by Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor Khan , a story that resonates with parents and those desperate to begin their family, and a delightful mix of comedy and emotions that never gets preachy.
Debut director Raj Mehta deals with a rather serious subject of two couples opting for IVF (In-vitro Fertilisation) with a generous mix of comedy and emotions. An urban comedy with its heart in the right place, Good Newwz just hits the right spot.
Watch: Good Newwz | No Rating Movie Review | Akshay Kumar | Kareena Kapoor Khan | Diljit Dosanjh | Kiara Advani
The basic premise of Good Newwz was established in trailer itself. There are the posh Batras — a high-flying journalist Deepti (Kareena) and a sales executive Varun (Akshay) versus the loud Batras — homemaker Monika (Kiara Advani) and god-knows-what-does-he-do-for-a-living Honey (Diljit Dosanjh) from Chandigarh.
After several failed attempts at conceiving a baby naturally, both the couples consult Mumbai’s best fertility doctors (Adil Hussain and his wife Tisca Chopra) and opt for IVF. As they await the good news, the doctor shares a rather negligent sperm mix-up, leaving both the couples in a state of agony and helplessness. A series of hilarious events follow as the couples come to terms with the unusual situation they are in.
The deliberate light-hearted treatment of such a serious subject is entertaining. Even though Mehta gives ample scope to his actors to perform and do what they’re best at, he doesn’t let them step out of the vision he has for the film. Mehta, Jyoti Kapoor and Rishabh Sharma pen some clever and witty dialogues: just like the mix-up of sperms, there’s an uproarious mix-up of words too as sperm becomes spam, flush is pronounced as flesh, honours turns into hawners, morni becomes ovary, and so on. Having said that, a couple of off-track jokes do fall flat but thankfully they are few and far between.
Another thing that works in favour of Good Newwz is its straight narrative which doesn’t complicate the already complicated central premise. Even the transition from comedy to drama, especially in the last one hour, is so finely executed that you don’t realize when you get transported into another zone and when laughter takes a backseat and you feel tears of joys rolling down your cheeks.
The pace of the film is steady with enough high points in both the first and second half; I feel tighter editing, especially in the second half, could have made for a crisper watch. However, you can forgive this as the laughter it brings along is truly worth it.
The cast gets full marks for honest performances. Kareena yet again proves why she’s the best in the business. With a well etched out character, Kareena is especially impressive in the emotional portions. Her Deepti is real and when it comes to her dramatic reactions, no one comes close to how she does it.
Good Newwz again reminds us how good Akshay can be with comedy. In fact, you can call this one of his best comedic performances in the recent times, far from the Housefull brand of cinema. He plays a man-child but is okay taking sarcastic taunts from his wife on a daily basis. And those grey flecks in the hair are really working for him.
As for the other Batras, there’s nary a dull moment when Diljit is on screen. For someone who talks so less in real life, it’s quite an irony that his character has the maximum lines with boisterousness to boot. Kiara also picks up the nuances of her Punjabi character really well but never goes overboard as the flashy Punjabi she plays in the film.
The film keeps it real when it comes to showing urban relationships -- daily lives of married couples, their fights, worries, wanting to have kids and careers etc. Monika is addressed as Moni and Deepti’s husband only calls her Deepu, you know that they’re trying to be as real as possible.
On the flipside, Good Newwz thrives on clichés – whether it is Diljit-Kiara who are loud and flashy as they are from Chandigarh or Delhiites flaunting their brands. Also, in today’s day and age, dialogues such as ‘being pregnant is a blessing for any woman’ or ‘apna khoon/baccha apna hota hai’ feel regressive and out of date.

Music and dance sequences are fun and captivating though two of them in the second half somewhat deviate from the storytelling. Of course, Chandigarh Mein with a special appearance from Karan Johar, Badshah and Hardy Sandhu was magical and saved for the end credits.
All in all, Good Newwz has the right mix of ingredients and makes for a timely entertainer in this season of cheer. Not preachy or over the top, this light-hearted comic caper is the perfect way to end the year with. It is good news indeed for the audience.

Positive Messages
Overall message is not to judge a book by its cover. Teaches importance of embracing people's differences and that we're ultimately far more similar than we are different. Communication and empathy are important themes. Weight and dieting are discussed on several occasions.
Positive Role Models
Varun and Deepti behave in a snobbish and judgmental manner. Varun lies to Deepti and behaves selfishly, refusing to make sacrifices to have a family and showing very little compassion or understanding. He drinks, smokes, gambles. By comparison, Honey and Monika -- though supposedly the zany and uncouth pair -- are caring and supportive of each other, traits which Varun and Deepti come to realize are more important than anything.
Violence & Scariness
Voices are raised, drinks thrown, glasses smashed during a drunken argument, but nobody is hurt. Mention of miscarriage and abortion.

Sex, Romance & Nudity
Sex is mostly mentioned in relation to trying for a baby, with sperm, ovulation, IVF, miscarriage, and abortion all discussed. Medical scenes of insemination and birth. Talk of faking orgasms, sexual positions. Sex is implied -- including in a plane toilet -- but not seen. The covers of adult magazines are shown and dirty talk mentioned when one character gives a semen sample. Some mild flirtation, suggestive dance moves during musical numbers.

Occasional language includes "s--t" and "f--k," as well as "smart ass," "d--k," and "damn."

Products & Purchases
Brands are mentioned in passing, including Uber, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Multiple scenes in a Volkswagen showroom.
Drinking, Drugs & Smoking
Characters drink beer, wine, whiskey at bars, parties, at home. One scene where two characters become inebriated and drunkenly get into an argument, abusing the bar owner and smashing a glass. Cigarettes are smoked on a number of occasions, with implication that one may contain pot.

Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Good Newwz is a Bollywood romcom about two couples who decide to have IVF treatment to try to start a family. The dialogue is a mix of Hindi and English, making the subtitles easier than usual to follow. Because of the main subject of the movie, sex is discussed often -- mostly in a biological sense, though some mention is made of sexual pleasure for the sake of humor. There is some strong language, including "s--t" and "f--k." Miscarriage, abortion, adoption, and premature birth are some of the more adult themes introduced. Weight and dieting are also mentioned a few times. There is some depiction of drinking, including a drunken argument that results in smashed glasses. Characters also smoke, and there is a suggestion that one character smokes pot. Despite this, the movie is mostly lighthearted, energetic, and funny, with bold, likable characters and a fast, farcical pace. What's the Story?
In GOOD NEWWZ, sophisticated career couple Deepti Batra ( Kareena Kapoor ) and her husband, Varun ( Akshay Kumar ), visit an IVF clinic after struggling to have a family. But they soon discover that Varun's sample has been mixed up with the sample from a man with the same surname. Now Deepti is pregnant with the biological child of Honey Batra ( Diljit Dosanjh ), and his wife, Monika ( Kiara Advani ), is pregnant with Varun's child. Polar opposites in every way, the two couples must decide whether to keep the babies and, if they have their children, whether to incorporate the biological fathers into their lives. Honey and Monika go all out to become friends with their fellow Batras, moving into the same building and smothering the other couple. But Varun and Deepti want them to sign a contract to stay out of their lives for good. Can they come to an agreement for the sake of their children, or is it bad news for a happily ever after?
Is It Any Good?
From the camera panning across the Mumbai cityscape scored by contemporary music to the odd couple dynamics and the juvenile sex jokes, this is a modern romcom with universal appeal. Bolstered by Bollywood stars Kumar and Kapoor, and with equally strong performances from Dosanjh and Advani, the slick, farcical comedy keeps up the pace from start to finish. The characters are familiar. Kumar and Kapoor are the stylish city workaholics who have become completely disconnected from those outside their high-flying lifestyle. Meanwhile Dosanjh and Advani get to have a little more fun with their larger-than-life Punjabi characters, whose incorrect use of English brings the other Batras great amusement.
Tracking the pregnancies side by side, Good Newwz offers a poignant disparity between the way the couples communicate, entering well-trodden territory about priorities and what's important in life. This allows for some heartwarming and tear-jerking scenes -- particularly toward the end of the movie. Physical gags are as well executed as one-liners, and energy resonates from all four main actors. Supporting characters are equally well drawn, particularly IVF doctors Anand and Sandhya Joshi ( Adil Hussain and Tisca Chopra ). The two main song and dance numbers are vibrant, colorful, and full of personality, which perfectly sums up this Bollywood hit.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about Good Newwz 's attitude toward sex . What does it mean for the characters involved? Parents, talk to your teens about your own values regarding sex and relationships.
Discuss the movie's humor. What made you laugh? Can you think of any Hollywood movies with a similar sense of humor?
What does the movie say about the nature of family? What are some of the different -- and sometimes unconventional -- structures that make up modern families?
The character of Varun goes on the biggest journey. How does he change from the start of the movie to the end?
Which couple do you think are happier and why?

Good Newwz movie review: Akshay-Kareena starrer is not half bad
Good newwz movie review: good newwz works best when it is being its bawdy, silly, raucous self. it dips when it veers towards bring-out-the-hankies emotion bowing to the dictum of ‘how can a bollywood film not make you laugh and cry at the same time’..
Good Newwz movie cast: Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Diljit Dosanjh, Kiara Advani, Adil Hussain, Tisca Chopra, Anjana Sukhani Good Newwz movie director: Raj Mehta Good Newwz movie rating: 3 stars
Two couples with the same names, sperm samples, in-vitro fertilization, and a switcheroo which has far-reaching, haha, consequences: is this really a Bollywood film?
Just going by the fairly novel premise, I have to hand it to Good Newwz: so refreshing to have something so out-of-the-box (another word for ‘risky’) come out of an industry whose default option is to play safe by churning out tired, jaded sequels of tired, jaded super-starry vehicles.
Here are your regular people, even if they wear make-up in bed, and are beautifully styled out of it (the first set of Batras), and are a walking-talking clichéd represenation of the loud, well-off Punjabi (the second set), united with the rest of us in their desire to produce their own offspring. Adoption? ‘Haye nahin, apna khoon toh apna hota hai’.
So here’s your foursome, Varun (Kumar) and Deepu aka Deepti (Khan) and Honey (Dosanjh) and Monika (Advani) getting up close and very, very personal over a lab technician’s mistake. The result, for both the Batra sets who have been trying very hard to become parents, is both gratifying and problematic: who has more rights over the bun in the oven?
The question comes right at the halfway mark, leaving us intrigued. How will Good Newwz solve this problem? When sperms and eggs need fertility specialists—a smilingly unctuous doctor couple played by Adil Hussain and Tisca Chopra—to reach their conclusion, does it disturb the natural order of things? Or is this scientific intervention one of the best ways out for a desperate couple? Going by the spirit of the film, it junks seriousness, choosing cheesiness, and we are set up for laughter.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first half, with its easy, spiky banter between Varun and Deepu, as they (she more than he) stare at the right date on the ovulating calendar, and get down to the job, her pushing, him pulling: sex strictly for procreation can be a chore. Haha. Good to see Akshay Kumar a) not being a flag-waving-nationalist-patriot b) owning up to grey-stubble-on-chin, and c) reminding us just how funny he can be. Kapoor Khan has not a single hair out of place even when she needs to appear ruffled, filling out the role perfectly. Dosanjh’s consummate turn manages to overcome the top-to-toe velvety-bling he’s togged out in; I only wish Advani had a little more to do, even if her dutiful mata rani worshipping, pinni-eating Punjabi wife look is spot on. Chopra offers able support, and Hussain’s straight-faced, praying-to-the-almighty doc is an absolute hoot.
If the film had stayed true to its broad comedic bone, it would have been the perfect antidote to these grim times. But no, it dives into melodrama with the full complement of violins wailing in the background, giving the macho male stars a teary scene. Why not be confident, even of the elitist lines leading to cheap laughs mouthed by a character? Kareena Kapoor Khan has the money monologue, in which she speaks frankly and openly about the impact of pregnancy on a female body: when did you hear of an A lister talk of how bouts of involuntary and embarrassing peeing become part of this ‘aurat-sirf-ma-banane-ke-liye-paida-hoti-hai’ schtick Bollywood has been doused with?
Also, for a film that comes from the Dharma stable which is usually so careful about aesthetics, it’s surprising how some of the sets look so patently like sets: I was particularly struck by a gol-guppa-eating sequence which comes off more contrived than touching because even the sudden shower that comes down on the characters feels like it’s been manufactured by a rain machine just beyond our vision.
The film works best when it is being its bawdy, silly, raucous self. It dips when it veers towards bring-out-the-hankies emotion bowing to the dictum of ‘how can a Bollywood film not make you laugh and cry at the same time’. When will filmmakers get past this hoary belief?
That being said, you can see that this is a film that’s been written, not assembled on the fly. And that’s really the best news. The characters are distinct, there’s a flow, and at the film’s core, an idea. It dips here and there, sure, but never abandons its cheery gallop to the finish line. Net net, Good Newwz is not half bad.

Confident of it winning the Lok Sabha elections, BJP is organizing a grand celebration, with preparations for the swearing-in ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan in full swing. The event will showcase India's rich cultural heritage and may feature a sound-and-light show. It is expected to be attended by 8,000-10,000 people, and could possibly take place on June 9.

There’s an old-fashioned aesthetic in “News of the World” that might make it easy to dismiss as a “dad movie," something that plays on TNT in regular rotation for the next decade (which it almost certainly will), but this kind of finely-calibrated genre film is harder to pull off than it looks. There’s an attention to detail in every corner of this movie, including not just the period recreation but everything from James Newton Howard ’s lovely score to Tom Hanks ’ subtle performance. There’s something comforting about giving yourself over to an undeniably talented group of artists for two hours and just letting them tell you a story. That’s what this will be for many this holiday season. Yes, it’s relatively predictable and arguably a little thin in terms of ambition, but it’s also refined and nuanced in ways that these films often aren’t. Everyone here is at the top of their craft from the character actors who populate the ensemble to the two leads at its center to everyone behind the camera, and you can feel that from first frame to last.
Hanks reunites with his “ Captain Phillips ” director Paul Greengrass to play a very different kind of Captain in Jefferson Kyle Kidd, a traveler in Texas in 1870, not long after the end of the Civil War. Kidd is a newsreader, someone who travels from town to town and literally gets paid to read the news to the locals. Home delivery wasn’t a thing 150 years ago and many people in these small towns couldn’t even read, so they relied on people like Kidd to tell them what’s going on in the world. The chosen profession has made him something of an isolated wanderer, but it's also imbued a deep humanity in Kidd that has given him the air of an old-fashioned storyteller. He’s an entertainer as much as an informer, choosing what to read and how to present it. His travels and encounters also mean he can read people better than most, which will be essential for the next chapter of his life.
That starts when he comes across the scene of a murder. A Black driver has been hanged from a tree and a blonde girl looks at Kidd from the woods nearby. Kidd decides to take the girl he names Johanna (the excellent Helena Zengel ) to safety, even though she speaks no English and appears to have spent much of her young life in the captivity of Native Americans. She comes from German lineage but speaks Kiowa, and she was being taken to the authorities after the tribe who raised her was killed. Kidd realizes he will have to find this orphan a home.
These early scenes may be simple in narrative structure but Greengrass, Hanks, and the team behind the film add so much grace and nuance to them. Hanks has become such a subtle actor over the years, finding the little beats to define Kidd at every turn but never feeling showy. He’s so completely in the moment in this film, responding to each situation believably instead of sinking into the bland protagonist that could have hampered this film. It’s yet another recent turn of his that feels like it won’t get enough attention because he makes it look so easy (see also “Captain Phillips,” “ Bridge of Spies ” and “ Sully ,” among others).
“News of the World” becomes a road movie of sorts for Kidd and Johanna, with new encounters across the unstable landscape. (After the end of the Civil War, Texas was not exactly the safest place in the country.) Greengrass structures it in an episodic way that kind of detracts from the midsection, where the film sags a bit as it jumps from encounter to encounter. The set-up is so well done that watching the movie settle into a road trip may be a bit disappointing, although Greengrass brings out some of his action movie direction skills when they’re needed, such as in a tense shoot-out with some scumbags who try to buy Johanna. However, there’s a better version of “News of the World” that has slightly higher stakes. As difficult as the journey is, neither Kidd nor Johanna have a bruise or scar to show, even after jumping from a runaway horse and cart.
Greengrass is also smart enough to imbue his 1870 Western with some 2020 ideas. Kidd finds his way to Erath County, where the atmosphere is one of isolation and, sorry, fake news. The most prominent figure in the area, Mr. Farley ( Thomas Francis Murphy ) insists that Kidd read his propaganda newspaper about pushing out everyone from the area but the white people, and connections to disinformation in the modern age are not hard to make. And the idea of a man trying to bring a fractured nation back together through knowledge and decency has some relevance in 2020 too.
Not all of these themes are fully fleshed out, but “News of the World” stays together and stays entertaining because of its top-notch craft. It may feel like Greengrass’ most traditional film but there’s an energy to the direction here that’s not always apparent in a Western. It helps that it’s arguably the director’s most aesthetically striking film, with gorgeous vistas captured by Darius Wolski and one of the best scores of the year from James Newton Howard. And it’s so great to see so many wonderful faces filling out the cast like Ray McKinnon , Elizabeth Marvel , and Bill Camp . On paper, this simple tale well-told may not seem like it amounts to much, but, at the end of a year in which comfort was hard to find, this movie sometimes feels like a gift.

When Edgar fails to arrive at school, Ledroit is put on the case. Still haunted by a lost Black teen, Ledroit is driven to get the Andersons a different outcome. This is no easy feat in a city determined to discard what is deemed unsavory, and everyone involved with the case is hiding something. As Ledroit chases down leads, slowed by inadequate technology, red tape and his own pain, the horrors of NYC’s government policies come to light. It becomes clear that misconduct and violence at the highest levels are complicit in harming the city’s youngest and most vulnerable citizens.
Ultimately, “Eric” is about much more than a missing boy. The series revolves around corruption and inhumanity, topics that will thunder in the viewer’s mind long after the final episode. Disturbing but profound, the show asks why only certain people are allowed happy endings and what that means for those who won’t ever see justice.
“Eric” premieres May 30 on Netflix .

‘The Beach Boys’ Review: How to Make Good Vibrations
This Disney documentary looks at the family ties and sweet harmonies that turned a California band into a popular treasure.
By Nicolas Rapold
The wholesome ocean-breeze look of the Beach Boys could make the group a punchline if it weren’t for their sweet sunshine sound. The origins of their intricate harmonies undergird “The Beach Boys,” a Disney documentary directed by Frank Marshall and Thom Zimny that notes obstacles in the band’s career but mostly tries to keep the good vibrations going.
Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson grew up in a musical household in Hawthorne, Calif., and eventually pooled their ample talents with a cousin, Mike Love, and a friend, Al Jardine. As told through a patchwork of polite interviews and mostly mundane clips from performances, the rise of their music was fueled by four-part harmonies, surf culture and entrancing orchestration not unlike Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound .
Brian, who hated touring, was the band’s homebody musical mastermind, and he could imbue their pop with an outsider’s moods, while the Wilsons’ father, Murry, put on the pressure as their manager. Snippets from “Pet Sounds,” their landmark 1966 album, never fail to rejuvenate the movie. But after a while, you get the sense of a band that stopped growing, though the movie traces a fruitful competitive streak with the Beatles.
Any deviations from the film’s obligatory timeline tour are very welcome, like a mortifying studio recording of Murry holding forth, and it’s a treat to hear the esteem for Brian among the Wrecking Crew , the storied group of session musicians. And for the pop romantics among us, the Beach Boys can still cast a spell with those four little words: Wouldn’t it be nice?
The Beach Boys Rated PG-13 for drug material and brief lapses into unsunny language. Running time: 1 hour 53 minutes. Watch on Disney+ .

Jeremy Renner joins ‘Knives Out 3’ in first film since near-fatal accident

Jeremy Renner has found his first movie role since his nearly fatal snowplow accident. Renner is the latest star to join Rian Johnson’s new “Knives Out” film, “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery,” a Netflix representative confirmed Thursday to The Times.
The Hawkeye actor joins an already star-studded cast featuring Mila Kunis, Kerry Washington, Glenn Close and the returning Daniel Craig. “Challengers” lead Josh O’Connor, “Priscilla” star Cailee Spaeny and “Fleabag” actor Andrew Scott also appear in the whodunit murder mystery. Johnson returns as writer and director.
“Wake Up Dead Man” is the final movie in Netflix’s $450-million, two-movie purchase. “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” (2022) is the streaming giant’s ninth most watched English-language movie of all time with more than 136 million views. The first film was distributed by Lionsgate and made about $313 million at the global box office.
‘I relive it every night’: Jeremy Renner reflects on the day he almost died, and why he’s alive
Jeremy Renner’s return to “Mayor of Kingstown” after his near-deadly accident was not a forgone conclusion, but he says thanks to a collective of people, he’s back for Season 3.
May 17, 2024
Renner was run over by a 7-ton snowplow on New Year’s Day 2023. He was thrown off the machine while clearing his driveway. When Renner attempted to stop the snowplow as it moved downhill toward his nephew, he was caught in the machine’s path, ultimately leaving him in critical condition. The accident left him with 38 broken bones and a collapsed lung, along with significant chest trauma.
“I relive it every night,” Renner told The Times in May. “It’s in my visions. It’s in my dreams and my waking thoughts.”
Doctors originally said it would take him years to walk, Renner told The Times. Due to his self-proclaimed stubbornness, he was walking with a cane in three months.
He told The Times that recovery is a “one-way street,” saying, “It’s not even [like] a piece of Ikea furniture — there are no directions. You go one direction: You get better. How easy is that? Just remember what you did yesterday, or couldn’t do, and then try to do it today.”

Renner returned to acting in January, shooting Season 3 of the Paramount+ show “Mayor of Kingstown,” which premieres on Sunday.
“To try to create some truth and then get the audience to believe it, while I’m just trying to learn to walk again, to put one foot in front of the other and not get up in agony. I’m doing all these things to find my footing on the planet again,” Renner said.
Season 2 of “Mayor of Kingstown” premiered just two weeks after Renner’s accident. The show, created by Taylor Sheridan and Hugh Dillon, is set in a prison town in which Renner plays the titular mayor. It explores themes of racism and corruption within the American for-profit prison industry.

Good Newwz movie review: Good Newwz works best when it is being its bawdy, silly, raucous self. ... And that's really the best news. The characters are distinct, there's a flow, and at the film's core, an idea. It dips here and there, sure, but never abandons its cheery gallop to the finish line. Net net, Good Newwz is not half bad.
Good Newwz is a perfect mixture of Goof, urban comedy, emotions and all cinematic properties. Good Newwz ends 2019 with the bang and there are no second thoughts about it's commercial success. Go and have a Good time with Good Newwz. RATING- 7/10*. 14 out of 22 found this helpful.
Kumar goes about his role with a good mix of poker-faced zing and rakish bluster. Kapoor Khan is a perfect foil to him with her refinement, cussedness and a very defined sense of purpose.
