Tuition fees in belgium.

In Belgium, tuition fees vary based on a variety of factors: your nationality, the type of university, the region where you study (Belgium is split into 3 regions), and so on.

EU/EEA students can expect lower tuition fees than non-EU/EEA students. Still, Belgium universities are known to be fair when they set tuition fees. If the price is higher, it means the study programme is more specialised or scholarships might be available.

Private universities are usually more expensive than public ones. Check out the official website of your university to find you what tuition applies to you. You can always contact a university representative for other questions or advice.

Accommodation costs

The most convenient accommodation options are university halls of residence, for which most students only pay between 200 and 450 EUR per month.

Renting or sharing an apartment is a bit more expensive, costing around 500–700 EUR per month. For this type of accommodation (private rent), you also need to pay between 100 and 400 EUR for monthly utilities.

Health care

EU/EEA students enjoy the same benefits as Belgian citizens in terms of access to free or reduced-cost healthcare. To benefit from these services, you should hold an EHIC (European Health Insurance Card). You can arrange for an EHIC card from your home country, before your departure to Belgium.

Students coming from non-EU countries will need to arrange private health insurance before their departure.

Belgium is not an expensive country when it comes to food costs. Supermarkets have affordable prices, meaning that your monthly food bills would generally stay around 200–300 EUR.

Belgium has fantastic cuisine, particularly in terms of desserts. So, considering it isn’t so expensive, you should definitely treat yourself to a nice restaurant every once in awhile. A meal in a mid-range restaurant is between 8 and 15 EUR.

Overall, the average living costs for students in Belgium are between 750–1,100 EUR/month.

How to Apply to a Master's in Belgium

If you've decided to study a Master's degree at a university in Belgium, you will have to gather the right documents to prove that you fit the university requirements. Provide complete personal information, previous qualifications, financial information, and a personal statement.

What documents do I need to provide to apply in Belgium?

To apply to a university in Belgium you will likely be asked to provide some of the following documents:

  • birth certificate;
  • recent photos;
  • your passport or national identity card;
  • one or more reference letters from past employers or teachers;
  • copies of past diplomas or certificates, including your graduated Bachelor's degree;
  • academic transcripts;
  • letter of intent;
  • Curriculum Vitae;
  • Some form of proof that you can support your stay in the country during your studies.

Depending on the subject or specialization of your chosen Master's, you might also be asked to provide scores for additional tests like the GRE, GMAT or LSAT. Check if your programme requires any of these, or others.

The list of documents depends on the specific requirements of universities in Belgium so you might be asked to include additional documents. It’s also likely you’ll have to provide official English translations of your documents, or translations in the local language.

Prove your English skills

Because you’ll study an international degree in English, you'll have to present a language certificate. Some popular options for international students are IELTS, TOEFL or C1 Advanced language certificates. You’ll have to meet a minimum language score set by the university, and your test scores shouldn’t be older than 1-2 years. If you don’t meet the minimum language requirements, you will have to improve your skills and scores by taking an English preparation course.

Application deadlines for Belgium

The deadlines for applying to a Master's in Belgium are usually during summer (June-July), or in winter (January-February). Keep in mind that some universities don’t have application deadlines, which means you can apply whenever you are ready.

Recent international policies promote international university cooperation and student exchange between countries worldwide. High-quality study and PhD degrees are made more available to students in order to create a global educational network, achievable through student and staff mobility. Career and research oriented programmes support international student development.

University cooperation enables students study worldwide, for instance in Australia, Asia, Europe and the United States and provides ways of recognizing previous degrees. Different study options offer appropriate alternatives to students, depending on their preferred mode of study.

Many study programmes in Australia, Asia, Europe and North America are English-taught. The most popular international student destinations include the following countries: Australia, Belgium, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, the United States, and more. However, these are not the only countries offering English-taught education. The rest of the world is full of endless study choices, from highly ranked to smaller, more specialized, universities.

PhD (postgraduate) Degrees

If you want further education beyond the undergraduate level or if you want more personal development or a career in academia, you could obtain a PhD degree. PhD degrees are postgraduate programmes that usually follow a Master's, MPhil or MRes, but there might be additional requirements depending on the university. Students are required to do their own research in a chosen topic. With the help of a supervisor, you develop knowledge and analytical skills in a specific or multidisciplinary field and you carry out independent research. The duration of a PhD degree differs per country and institution. Sometimes your own research is accompanied by work for the department such as giving seminars or small group teaching.

PhD students are required to study on campus under close supervision, but there are universities that accept students enrolled into a part-time distance education PhD degree. Studying on campus can also be full-time as well as part-time, in which case the part-time variant is normally twice as long as the full-time study.

‘PhD from A to Z’: What can I do to maximise my PhD journey? | Academia et al: S03E02

10 July 2024

How do you make the leap into doctoral study to make the most of life as a PhD researcher? This episode's guest Dr Jenny Chanfreau recommends treating your PhD like a full-time job - we explore how.

Jenny Chanfreau in front of a yellow triangle. Title says ‘PhD from A to Z’: What can I do to maximise my PhD journey?.

Academia et al. : S03E02

Dr Jenny Chanfreau , Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Sussex

Drawing from her experience of embarking on a PhD after working at the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen), the UK's largest independent social research institute, Dr Chanfreau offers valuable insights.

Join hosts Alina and Keri as they and Jenny compare their journeys into PhD life, think about how to make the most of their new academic communities, and air some thoughts about the unique 'twilight' status of PhD researchers within universities - more professional than students but not quite fully-fledged staff - while discussing what universities can do to recognise and protect the contributions PhD researchers make to their department's operation.

And as you approach the end of your PhD, the big question arises: now what? The episode explores the challenges of job applications, potential visa stress for international scholars, and the skills needed to stay in academia. It also covers the importance of showcasing your research, exploring post-doctoral opportunities, and dealing with feedback or rejection - it can be emotional! The discussion includes how to process feedback constructively and the surprising usefulness of memes in navigating this journey.

Jenny's tip of the day

Work out your strengths from your professional past, and identify your own development needs.

This Cutting-Edge Hong Kong Art Gallery Was Once a Private Club

Spaces like the phd group are essential for keeping the hong kong art ecosystem vibrant and alive..

Two people stand in an art space

Now in its second year, PHD Group in Hong Kong has an interesting story—one that interacts with the city’s recent history, connecting and reviving memories, while celebrating with its programming the inherent dynamic multiculturalism that has always characterized this important hub in Asia. Observer visited the gallery, which is on the top floor of a commercial building in Wan Chai not too far from the convention center where Art Basel Hong Kong takes place, on a hot day in early July. There, we met with Willem Molesworth , who founded the gallery with his wife, Ysabelle Cheung , in 2021. Cheung’s family is originally from Hong Kong, while Molesworth is from the U.S., and the multiculturalism of the duo runs deep.

“ Ysabelle has a diasporic background as she was born and raised in London,” Molesworth, who has lived in Hong Kong for almost eight years, told Observer. “In a sense, we are both immigrants to the city and chose to be here. Hong Kong is a place of movement and transience; perhaps we are both intrigued by the idea of creating a community or setting down roots within that transience.” T o be American is to question and challenge what that means, he added. “I have family roots in Italy and I am also Jewish. I grew up in New York City, surrounded by various cultures. My sensibilities are certainly shaped by these experiences, and perhaps inversely, the best way to understand how our backgrounds intersect is to look at the gallery.”

The PHD Group program f ocuses on art and artists from East Asia, with the bulk of the artists on the gallery’s roster hailing from Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Japan and Korea. “We are constantly in pursuit of art that speaks to stories about who and what we are today,” Molesworth said. “We also have a deep appreciation for the exquisite. The artwork we present brings together moments of contemplation with beauty.”

The space is the embodiment of this dedication to beauty and is especially interesting when you consider the relationship between the space’s present and its past. For thirty years, the gallery was a private clubhouse that catered to the needs of three Hong Kong businesspeople in the 1970s. Once used for parties and hosting guests, it was essentially abandoned. “We took possession of the space when it was in total entropy,” explained Molesworth. “With the help of our good friends at BEAU Architects, we adapted it into an art gallery, utilizing a surgical approach that preserved the fundamental aspects of the space. Through this approach, we embrace the history of the space and allow it to shape and contribute to our exhibitions.”

Molesworth guided us to a small room—the former kitchen of the clubhouse. Here, the gallerists display some objects they saved from the gallery’s previous life in what they treat as a third space that “ allows for a natural gathering and digesting of our exhibitions. These objects connect to Hong Kong’s history and contextualize contemporary art within that larger context.” Art does not exist in a vacuum, Molesworth told us. “We embrace that.”

Installation view in a gallery space with old walls showcasing green sculptures and paintings.

When we visited, the gallery was showing a thoughtfully curated solo exhibition of the work of local artist Chan Ting , who took over the space with a series of alien sculptural presences that interacted with the gallery’s walls. The artist’s practice consists of collecting and appropriating found objects and furniture pieces full of memories, filling their gaps and cracks with an uncanny green substance with a slimy appearance that calls to mind some buildings in Hong Kong—places with a stratification of historical memories—but also seems to suggest decay and something rooting and infected.

Molesworth and Cheung first encountered Ting’s work and practice in a nonprofit space where she used to run with a few artist friends called Negative Space. There, Ting had installed a work low to the ground and visitors had to crouch a little to see it. “It felt intimate and private,” Molesworth said. “At that moment, we didn’t have a specific sense that the work represented Hong Kong. To us, Chan Ting’s work exemplifies the wider contemporary conditions of society today: how we deal with passages of time and how we process trauma. There is a sensitivity to the practice that reveals the subconscious layers of our realities; this is related to her work as a hypnotherapist and sound healer.”

Photo of a wooden box with a green substance inside.

Despite this sensation of “corrosion,” “invasion” or ” infection,” these layers of green, to Ting, actually represent a space of healing and growth. All the works result from an attentive and labor-intensive conservation of these discarded containers and other objects, empty and in disrepair. Filling their voids, adding layers of construction plaster and pigment, and then gradually drilling, sanding and polishing, the artist revives them,  suggesting this necessary care process aimed at preserving those vessels of memories from oblivion. “There are cracks everywhere in this city and across other cities. Chan Ting thinks of the green as filling in the emptiness and void. Perhaps these things share a similarity in that they grow and expand quietly, and it’s just a matter of our perception,” Molesworth observed.

Asked if in the last few years, following the protests, they have seen a lot of changes in the city and its cultural art scene, Molesworth admitted that there are some changes, but he is also very hopeful that resilience will let Hong Kong maintain its unique position as an art hub for the region.

Molesworth and Cheung, along with Alex Chan of The Shophouse, also founded Supper Club, which took place during the recent Art Basel Hong Kong art week. Conceived as an alternative fair model, it gathered works presented by twenty-two galleries worldwide in the Fringe Club, with extended nighttime hours and rich programming to encourage conversation and exchange in a more casual atmosphere than a traditional fair. “Supper Club aimed to be a new event for Hong Kong and the international art scene, he said. “While important for many reasons, we felt that the traditional model of fairs needed something as a counterbalance. We must point out that Supper Club is not strictly an art fair but a hybrid between a fair and an exhibition. We hosted various panel talks, performances, and other events. We wanted to create space for experimentation.”

Experimentation also animates the gallery’s program, and spaces like the PHD Group are essential for keeping the Hong Kong art ecosystem vibrant and alive. Molesworth and Cheung are among those fostering conversations and important reflections on the city’s recent history and its identity as a dynamic place of exchange. “ It is a wonderful creative journey, and our plans consist of staying on this path,” the gallerist said. “We have a few other ideas too; we only hope we can get around to them.” We expect they’ll do much to exercise the potential of cultural hybridization and multiculturalism between the West and the East.

How France overcame Portugal on penalties to reach Euro 2024 semi-finals

doing a phd in belgium

France beat Portugal on penalties

France will play Spain for a place in the 2024 European Championship final after Theo Hernandez struck the winning penalty in a 5-3 shootout win against Portugal .

Joao Felix was the only player to miss from the spot after the Hamburg quarter-final finished goalless after 120 minutes.

Both sides struggled in front of goal in a forgettable match that saw their biggest stars fail to deliver.

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo blazed over from close range in extra-time while France skipper Kylian Mbappe looked uncomfortable after suffering another blow to the face and was withdrawn before the decisive shootout.

Portugal 0 France 0: Penalties decide cagey quarter-final as Mbappe progresses and Ronaldo goes out – The Briefing

Tim Spiers

How this game was (eventually) decided…

Margins are extremely fine in football.

Of the nine penalties taken in this shoot-out, eight-and-a-half of them were perfect. But Joao Felix’s penalty struck the post and ended Portugal and Cristiano Ronaldo’s dreams.

After his remarkable heroics in the previous round against Slovenia, saving all three penalties he faced, the stage was set for keeper Diogo Costa to take Portugal through again.

France had also lost their previous three penalty shoot-outs in major tournaments, not winning one since the 1998 World Cup.

But this time they prevailed, thanks to a huge slice of fortune in the lottery of a shoot-out.

One more from France head coach Didier Deschamps, who took off Kylian Mbappe at half-time in extra time — the France captain having taken a ball full in his masked face, having broken his nose in the opening group game against Austria.

Here is what Deschamps said of Mbappe:

💬 “He was obviously tired and it is not easy. I saw him struggling in the first half of extra time. There was no point in leaving him on, even if he was a penalty taker.

“Kylian has always been honest with me and the group. It seemed normal to me to bring on some freshness.

“We’re in the semi-finals and it’s something we shouldn’t take for granted, even if we may be used to it recently. I was already enjoying being in the quarter-finals. Now we go to win it.”

Bernardo sees success in spirit

Bernardo sees success in spirit

Bernardo Silva gets it. The Portugal midfielder knows his country fell the right side of the shootout gods in the round of 16, and that is not something you can always count on. Here is the Manchester City midfielder speaking to CNN Portugal :

💬 “Just as it was cruel for Slovenia in (the) round of 16, today was cruel for us. We move on; it’s a lesson and we’ll try to improve. We have to learn from it.

“The group remains cohesive. We have worked hard. We have managed to maintain a dressing room with a very good spirit. That is unique, and it is in these moments you see great teams. We will try to maintain this cohesion.”

Full-time stats zone

Ignoring the shootout — as these numbers do — you can see how equally matched the two sides were, and why it took nine penalties to separate them. Here are what the 120 minutes looked like…

FT (aet): Portugal 0-0 France (France win 5-3 on pens)

  • Possession: 60% — 40%
  • Shots: 15 — 20
  • On target: 4 — 5
  • XG: 1.71 — 1.10
  • Big chances: 4 — 2
  • Blocked shots: 6 — 6
  • Duels won: 44 — 47
  • Dispossessed: 9 — 9

France may well have it in them to stifle Spain too — and if they do, it will be very hard to see them being picked off at any point during Euro 2024.

Deschamps happy with his tiring side

Deschamps happy with his tiring side

The one person unlikely to worry about France’s performance tonight is head coach Didier Deschamps. Here he is speaking at full-time to UEFA:

💬 “It was a very tense, tight match. It could have gone either way, even if we had a more laborious end to the match in extra time with less of the ball, there was fatigue too.

“It’s decided on small details, but I’m happy for the group that pushed themselves to the limit and swung it to the right side for us.”

The Briefing: Penalties decide cagey quarter-final

The Briefing: Penalties decide cagey quarter-final

Anyone tuning into the first half after the pulsating Germany vs Spain quarter-final was rapidly brought down to earth, as Portugal and France played out a largely underwhelming opening 45 minutes.

The teams’ combined expected goals total at half-time was 0.15, the lowest at any match at Euro 2024.

Thankfully, the second half opened up a little. But anyone who found all that a little bit exciting would have been mollified by extra time which — like the first half — was an elapsed period of time in which not very much happened.

A penalty shootout was the inevitable conclusion and France scored all five of theirs, while Joao Felix missed for Portugal.

Tim Spiers , Liam Tharme and Amy Lawrence break down the talking points from the game in Hamburg.

Dembele has lift-off

Dembele has lift-off

Another plus for Didier Deschamps will be the impact of Ousmane Dembele, who was named as the official player of the match — despite only coming on after 67 minutes.

He certainly looked the man mostly likely to break the deadlock in Hamburg, and may well come into serious consideration for a start once that date with Spain arrives in a few days’ time.

France buy time for Mbappe

France buy time for Mbappe

Of course, celebrations for making the semi-finals of a major tournament don’t tend to last for long — and attention will swiftly switch to the challenge of taking on Spain in Munich on Tuesday.

That gives Kylian Mbappe a few days to feel a bit better, as today it became clear that his broken nose isn’t make life easy for the Real Madrid striker. Especially when the ball smashes him in the face mid-game.

Joy and relief for France

Joy and relief for France

The France celebrations could just have easily been intense relief.

France had been eliminated each of the last four times they had gone to extra time at a major tournament, including the World Cup and European Championships.

That run dates back to them winning Euro 2000.

So all in all, that’s a huge night for France — however unconvincing it felt for long spells.

The legacy of Cristiano Ronaldo

The legacy of Cristiano Ronaldo

Here endeth Cristiano Ronaldo’s European Championship, then.

He was the second oldest player at Euro 2024 (behind his team-mate, Pepe).

He has extended his record of most European Championship games to 30.

Ronaldo was already the male player to have featured at the most Euro tournaments. This was his sixth.

But he also missed out on one, failing to become the oldest goalscorer in European Championship history — despite taking 23 shots at goal during Euro 2024.

At least Luka Modric knows his record, set in the group-stage draw with Italy at 38 years 289 days, is safe for a little while.

Liam Tharme

More achievements unlocked

Not much France had not achieved under Didier Deschamps prior to tonight — barring winning the Euros — but they can add a penalty shoot-out win to that (having lost at Euro 2020 to Switzerland and in the 2022 World Cup final to Argentina).

Five convincing penalties too, especially Kounde’s top-corner one and young Barcola sending Diogo Costa the wrong way.

With no Mbappe, Giroud or Griezmann on the pitch, it was an impressive if makeshift display.

Dogged progress for Deschamps

Dogged progress for Deschamps

And with that, France reach the semi-finals of Euro 2024 despite failing to score from any of their 86 non-penalty shots in their five games so far.

At least they are defensively secure, I guess.

Tears at the end

Tears at the end

For Portugal, hugely emotional scenes with Pepe bursting into tears on the shoulder of Cristiano Ronaldo — whose own eyes are pretty red.

Two remarkable footballers, whose European Champions careers have in all likelihood just come to an end.

France find a way

France find a way

That was pretty dire from France but they get it done. Mbappe flies onto the pitch to kick off the celebrations and Didier Deschamps is beaming.

I’m not really sure how they’ve done it — still without scoring a goal for themselves in open play.

But they’re there, and that is all anyone will think about right now.

FRANCE ARE INTO THE SEMIS!

Doing a PhD In Belgium

I am looking to do my PhD in Biomedical sciences where the pay is good. The Flemish part of Belgium pays their PhD students really well, so I am thinking about doing my PhD there.

I am not European descent and was wondering what it was like living in Flanders as minority. I have heard a lot of horror stories from friends that have done a PhD there, but I am still interested because the pay is so good. I would like to hear from a broader range of people. Can people who have worked there, please give me your opinions?

Also, how is the laboratory environment there?
