Jessica Turner, PhD

Department of psychiatry and behavioral health.

Turner_Jessica_720x720

Dr. Turner is a cognitive neuroscientist and principal investigator with decades of experience in both academic and industry research. She joined The Ohio State University Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health as a professor in June 2022 following nine years as a professor in psychology, neuroscience and gerontology at Georgia State University. She leverages her academic background in mathematics, psychology and neuroscience to lead research projects related to neuroimaging and genetics, analysis of brain circuits, advanced modeling and the application of big data techniques in clinical neuroscience.

Dr. Turner’s research program uses neuroimaging of psychiatric populations to improve understanding of the structural and functional circuitry underlying mental illness and health. This involves multiple approaches, including:

  • The combination of imaging with genetics to identify genotypes that might help individualize treatment and prognosis.
  • Structural and functional imaging across multiple institutions to develop robust clinical neuroimaging studies.
  • The use of neuroimaging methods in schizophrenia and other disorders to determine the relationship between brain volume and functional characteristics with disease status and symptom profiles.
  • Large-scale neuroimaging data sharing to support the international collaborations needed to perform imaging genetics analyses.

Dr. Turner has been a leader in multisite neuroimaging and regularly contributes to worldwide collaborative studies, including those for the ENIGMA (Enhancing Neuro Imaging Genetics Through Meta Analysis) consortium. Her research portfolio has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Science Foundation and both internal and mentored grants. She’s shared her insight in more than 250 peer-reviewed journal articles and 150 posters, multiple book chapters, professional presentations, symposia and workshops.

Her professional investment in the research and education community is reflected in her time spent on NIH and international grant review panels and committee participation for professional societies, including the Organization for Human Brain Mapping, Society of Biological Psychiatry and Schizophrenia International Research Society. She has also chaired or worked on national task forces related to schizophrenia, hallucinations, neuroimaging, data sharing and other research.

Dr. Turner received her PhD in cognitive sciences from the University of California, Irvine (UCI). She completed her postdoctoral work in neuroscience at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, before joining the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Long Beach, California, where she used neuroimaging to research cortical reorganization following spinal cord injury. New positions followed in 2003 at the UCI Psychiatry department, to work on multisite neuroimaging in schizophrenia, and The Mind Research Network in 2010. Dr. Turner was then named chair of the neuropsychology and cognitive neuroscience research program at Georgia State University, where she also managed the cognitive neuroscience graduate concentration in psychology.

Dr. Turner is currently a field chief editor for Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, and she’s served as guest editor for Human Brain Mapping and NeuroImage and editorial board member for BioMedInformatics , Neuroinformatics and Frontiers in Neuroscience: Brain Imaging Methods .

Patient Experience Ratings

About the patient experience rating system.

The Patient Experience Rating is an average of all responses to the care provider related questions shown above from our nationally-recognized Press Ganey Patient Satisfaction Survey. Patients that are treated in outpatient or hospital environments may receive different surveys, and the volume of responses will vary by question.

Responses are measured on a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 being the best score.

We are committed to true transparency. However, to ensure the comments are fair and correctly attributed, we review each one before posting to the website. We exclude entire comments that disclose patient's protected health information, are off-topic, or include other confidential or inappropriate content. Comments will appear on provider bios only if providers have a minimum number of comments.

Comments are shared internally for education purposes to ensure that we are doing our very best for the patients and families for whom we are privileged to care.

The comments are submitted by patients and families and reflect their views and opinions. The comments are not endorsed by and do not reflect the views of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Raymond Scott Turner, MD, PhD, is professor of neurology and director of the Memory Disorders program at MedStar Georgetown University Medical Center. Before his recruitment to Georgetown in 2008, he was chief of the neurology service at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System and associate professor and associate chair in the Department of Neurology, University of Michigan. Dr. Turner earned his medical degree and a PhD in pharmacology from Emory University, Atlanta, and completed his internship, residency and fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. He is board certified in psychiatry and neurology.

Dr. Turner has received numerous prestigious awards, including a fellowship from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and a Paul Beeson Scholarship. He lectures widely, serves as a reviewer for granting agencies and biomedical journals, and has published more than 70 peer-reviewed papers, editorials and book chapters.

At the MedStar Georgetown Memory Disorders Program, Dr. Turner and his team offer diagnostic services as well as clinical care for older individuals with cognitive disorders. The program also offers a range of research opportunities designed to discover more effective prevention and treatment strategies. To do this, the program partners with healthy older volunteers at risk, as well as individuals with mild cognitive impairment or dementia due to Alzheimer's disease. The program's research is increasingly focused on individuals in the earliest disease stage -- when new treatments may be most effective. Dr. Turner encourages anyone interested in learning more to visit the program website: memory.georgetown.edu

Dr. Turner's Philosophy of Care:

Alzheimer's disease and other progressive dementias of aging are devastating for an individual and his or her family. It is important to seek medical evaluation early if you suspect memory problems are developing. A reversible cause of memory loss may be uncovered, and proven treatments with modest benefits for individuals with mild cognitive impairment or dementia due to Alzheimer's disease are available now. Our team of clinicians have the experience and expertise to provide compassionate and knowledgeable care based on the latest research. We also welcome volunteers and their families to learn about research opportunities and consider participating in a study. This is the only way we will make progress on the war against Alzheimer's disease.

Rice university phd graduate defies the odds after being diagnosed with muscular dystrophy.

Rosie Nguyen Image

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Doctors predicted he wouldn't make it past his 20s after being diagnosed with muscular dystrophy. Not only has Dr. Felix Wu defied the odds, but he's also been thriving after graduating from Rice University . Now, he's working towards making the world a better place for people with disabilities.

It was a day Lisa Hu and Gang Wu will never forget. Felix Wu was only about 3 years old when his family visited different doctors to find out what was impacting his mobility and causing him to fall frequently.

Finally, they got an answer from one of their physicians. It was Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). They grappled in shock when they were given a grim prognosis that their son would likely only live to be between 18 and 25 years old.

"Our world turned upside down. The landscape suddenly became something we didn't know. At the time, treatment was very limited, and there's no cure. So it was very tough for us. Our focus became to slow the progression of the disease," Hu said.

According to the Muscular Dystrophy Association , muscle weakness is the primary symptom of DMD.

It can begin as early as 2 years old, first affecting the muscles close to the core of the body and then later impacting the limbs. Children with the condition may have difficulty jumping, running, and walking.

READ MORE: Teacher refuses to let muscular dystrophy slow him down

Felix Wu shared that it was tough as a child when he couldn't participate in the same physical activities as his classmates or when he had to navigate in and out of buildings that weren't very accessible for people with disabilities. However, he said what affected him the most was how others perceived him.

"I've been questioned about what I'm able to achieve, and it's taken opportunities away from me. There's been assumptions that I'm not intelligent or mature enough to handle certain things. When I did succeed, sometimes people would assume I took some type of shortcut, and that's how I got here," Felix Wu said.

Felix Wu's condition was something his parents couldn't control. So they started focusing on what they could control, taking their son to see the world and supporting him in whatever he wanted to do.

"All we can do is give him our love and educate him as much as we can about DMD. We let him make his own decisions about his health and tell us what he wants or doesn't want to do," Hu said.

One of their favorite activities to do together as a family is visit national parks around the country, and they have been to more than 70 so far.

Felix Wu also loves playing video and board games in his spare time, such as Pokemon and Magic: The Gathering.

But Felix Wu has also always been extremely studious. To Hu and Gang Wu's surprise, he committed to doing well academically and ranking at the top of his class, pointing out that his parents never pressured him to get good grades.

"He's very self-driving, and on top of that, he's very smart. He learns things very fast. We're happy that he has been doing so good. But sometimes, we have to remind him to slow down and take care of his health," Gang Wu said.

As Felix Wu reflected during Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, he said his parents, who are originally from China and came to the U.S. in the 1980s for college, are the inspiration behind his success.

"I think about how lucky I am for the resources I have to this day that they didn't have. That's definitely motivated me to keep moving forward," Felix Wu said.

For the last nine years, Gang Wu has made the hour-long drive between Katy and Rice University to get Felix to class.

But this month, they took their last ride to campus. Felix Wu graduated with a PhD in psychological sciences focusing on industrial-organizational and quantitative psychology, making him a "triple owl" for earning his bachelor's and master's degrees at the prestigious institution.

"No matter what the stakes are for his future, we know Felix is going to fight. It doesn't matter if he's going to win or not, he's going to fight," Gang Wu said.

Felix Wu, who is now 26, is taking a short break before starting his new job at a consulting firm.

He told ABC13 he plans to continue using his research and data to help improve workplace conditions for people with disabilities.

"People with disabilities are employed at a far lower rate than everybody else. That's important because, economically, you need a job to actually be able to survive and thrive. This is an important area where I can bring my own experience and show that there are still a lot of things that people with disabilities can do," Felix Wu said.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

doctor turner phd

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

doctor turner phd

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

doctor turner phd

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

doctor turner phd

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

doctor turner phd

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

doctor turner phd

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

doctor turner phd

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

12-year-old Bruhat Soma wins 96th Scripps National Spelling Bee in spell-off

doctor turner phd

OXON HILL, Md. – All Bruhat Soma does is win.

Soma entered the 96th Scripps National Spelling Bee with three smaller spelling bee victories already under his belt in 2024, and the 12-year-old from St. Petersburg, Florida, won the big prize Thursday by defeating fellow 12-year-old Faizan Zaki in a spell-off.

"My heart was pumping so fast when I realized I won," Soma said. "I had a good feeling I would win because I did pretty good, but yeah, you never know. I still couldn’t absorb the moment yet."

With organizers calling for a spell-off to determine a winner following 14 rounds over three days at the national championships, Soma spelled 29 words correctly in a 90-second span to best Zaki, who recorded 20 correct words.

For every one-hour practice session, Soma's spelling coach Sam Evans said, they would do three spell-offs.

"He’s certainly very, very good at them," Evans told USA TODAY. "I’m not surprised to see how well he did tonight."

Soma was ready for a spell-off. He was calm onstage. Every day, Soma said, his father used a program to pronounce words in 90-second sprints to emulate the spell-off.

“I really wanted all of this,” Soma said, “but you could never expect it.”

The spell-off was introduced in 2021 and was used for the first time – and before Thursday, the only time – at the 2022 competition. Harini Logan correctly spelled 22 words to take home the title that year.

The 2024 national finals began with 245 spellers from all 50 states and across the globe. Ninety-seven individuals bowed out during Tuesday’s preliminaries and 45 moved from the quarterfinals to semifinals Wednesday. Only eight – a smaller group than normal – advanced to the finals.

Soma will receive more than $50,000 cash in addition to other prizes for his victory.

Two finalists bowed out in the first round of spelling Thursday. The remaining six cruised through the subsequent vocabulary round; the Bee started having competitors choose the correct definition onstage in 2019, which typically has proved more challenging for the finalists and resulted in more eliminations.

Kirsten Santos, who finished fifth in 2022, took sixth this time around and was one letter off on “apophasis.” The top five moved into the fourth round of spelling, when Aditi Muthukumar could not nail “lillooet.”

Shrey Parikh and Ananya Prassanna then bowed out as time was expiring on the Bee’s broadcast window, prompting the start of the spell-off.

Who is Bruhat Soma? 2024 National Spelling Bee winner 'knew all of my words'

For Soma, winning the Bee has been a goal of his since third grade. He bowed out in the quarterfinals last year and decided to “go hard” in the run-up to the 2024 Bee to make up for that performance.

“I feel ecstatic,” he said onstage with confetti surrounding his feet and the Scripps Cup beside him.

Asked what the hardest word of the week he received was, he said: “I mean, to be fair, I knew all of my words. So I don’t really know.”

To help him spell out loud, Soma employs the strategy of "typing" with his left hand on an imaginary keyboard. He said he was strategic in choosing which sections to memorize – the ones he was most likely to hear at the Bee.

"His memory’s just so good and that certainly helps him with spelling," Evans said.

"I don’t know the entire dictionary," Soma said, "and I’m not even close to that."

Nonetheless, anybody can devote a few days or weeks to practicing spelling, Evans said. Soma's dedication was different.

“To be consistent throughout the whole year and to work towards a goal like he has, it’s something that makes him really special,” said Evans, a 16-year-old from Jacksonville, Florida, who will be a junior in high school in the fall. “His work ethic is really the reason why he’s standing up there holding the trophy.”

Soma also loves basketball and will undoubtedly have more time now to watch and play it.

“This year, I haven’t really been keeping up with basketball because of spelling,” he said. “Basketball is like my side passion.”

What was 2024 Spelling Bee winning word?

With the spell-off, there is no official winning word. Zaki spelled “nicuri” to force the spell-off after Soma correctly spelled “daena.”

Zaki asked for some time to take deep breaths before beginning his 90-second run.

Zaki is one of Soma's closest friends on the spelling circuit. The two shared a hug before head pronouncer Dr. Jacques Bailly read the results of the spell-off.

“I would say congrats to him. He did amazing,” Soma said.

US men’s soccer goalkeeper Matt Turner is ready to face Colombia in DC

The U.S. men’s national soccer team touched down in the D.C. region earlier this week to begin preparing for a summer filled with important matches building up to the 2026 World Cup. And Matt Turner is ready to compete against some of the world’s best for the Stars and Stripes.

doctor turner phd

The 30-year-old goalkeeper enters camp looking to extend his stellar performances for the USMNT. Turner has made 38 appearances for the U.S., starting all four of the team’s 2022 World Cup matches, and earning 23 clean sheets. He has led the U.S. to two CONCACAF Nations League titles and the 2021 Gold Cup, winning the Gold Glove honors as the tournament’s best keeper.

Turner arrives to D.C. after a tough club season with English Premier League side Nottingham Forest, where he only recorded two clean sheets and, at one point, was benched . He also faces competition within the U.S. camp to keep his starting job long term with the emergence of Ethan Horvath and younger netminders who are preparing to play in the Paris Olympics.

However, the New Jersey native tells WTOP he welcomes the challenge during a busy summer. The U.S. will spend the next two weeks training in the D.C. region before playing in two international friendlies against South American opponents: Colombia at Commanders Field on June 8 and Brazil in Orlando on June 12.

The matches are in preparation for a special edition of the Copa America tournament, which normally only features South American teams, but will include North American sides this year. The U.S. will begin group play against Bolivia on June 23.

Turner, along with Horvath, met with local youth players at the Bowlero Tysons Corner in Virginia as part of a kickoff event for Copa Tysons, a local campaign featuring several soccer-themed events, including an outdoor screening of the 2024 UEFA European Championship final, to attract fans to watch matches at its restaurants.

After the event, Turner spoke to WTOP about the team’s preparations for its friendly match at Commanders Field and his thoughts on playing in Copa America.

The transcript below has been lightly edited for clarity.

José Umaña : First off, how’s it feel now that you guys are now in (camp) together, getting ready to prepare not just for Colombia but Copa America as well?

Matt Turner: It’s always special when we get back together. (The) first couple of days, seeing the guys again, making those connections again, and really just getting to work. A few of us have had extended periods off. We know there’s a lot of work to do before we step on the pitch against Colombia. But the task is clear, and we’re really excited.

Umaña : For you especially, with the goalkeepers, and everybody’s coming in. How’s the battle been so far? So how’s it feel to now get ready to prepare to battle for your spot?

Turner : It’s one of those for me. I always feel like I need to bring my best when it comes to playing for the national team. When you have guys like Ethan (Horvath), Shawn (Johnson) and Gaga (Slonina) coming through and Patrick Schulte coming through. For me, it’s important when I have the opportunities to play for the national team to not just play, but to train and train well and bring my best effort and energy every time I step on the pitch. So it feels good. The battles are definitely heating up. And as more and more guys get into camp, we’ll be in full throttle.

WCup Iran United States Soccer

Umaña : Speaking of more guys arriving to the camp, is there anybody you’re excited to see that you haven’t had a lot of time to play with as teammates?

Turner : Well, I spent a lot of time with Ethan, obviously, at (Nottingham) Forest and over the years training. So it’s really great to get back together with him and train together. We know how to push each other’s buttons and make each other better. So we have a really great relationship. And it’s been great to see him and catch up with him again, I’m looking forward to just be with everybody. It’s not like a team where you have one or two friends in pockets. Everybody hangs out with everybody and that’s a really, really special environment to be a part of.

Umaña : U.S. is such a big country to start off this “summer of soccer” in the nation’s capital. How do you feel as one of the players and starters on the team to kick off here in the nation’s capital?

Turner : I’ve never played a national team game here. So I’m really, really excited. Obviously, so much history here and so many important people and figures in our country, and it’s just going to be a real honor to be able to represent the Stars and Stripes here in D.C.

Umaña : You guys are here at this event here in Bowlero. How was it to see all these young fans really excited to see you, meet you and asked you to autograph any little thing?

Turner : Yeah, it’s really special. I was that kid, maybe not necessarily about soccer when I was younger, but I was that kid. I wanted to meet professional athletes. Those meetings all had a really lasting impact on my life. I still remember them now, almost 30 years old. So if we can give these kids a lifetime memory here and now, and revolving around the beautiful game, especially, that’s a win in my book.

Umaña : You guys are playing in Colombia in (Commanders) Field. What is the expectation? Obviously it’s a friendly, but what are you hoping to get out of that kind of a game, against that kind of an opponent before Copa America?

Turner : They’re an amazing team. Honestly, if you ask me, they’re a team that’s — probably within their camp — expecting to have a say about who wins the Copa America. So for us, it’s really important to test ourselves against the elites, and try to win those games, and really just see what Copa America is going to be about. What the crowd will be like, will it be more Colombian? Will it be more American? Kind of to get the feeling for all those because we haven’t had many experiences recently against South American teams.

Umaña : So how excited are you for Copa America?

Turner : I’m very excited. This is going to be very special for us. We know how much it means to us, within the locker room, but also to our fans as well and the people of our country. Obviously, the U.S. is a huge melting pot so Copa America and doing well in it would be some pretty big bragging rights for a large portion of the country.

Umaña : So what would you say to any American fans that haven’t decided to purchase that ticket to see the match at Commanders Field?

Turner : Come out! It’s going to be a great game. First time we’ve been together. The atmosphere is going to be popping, and there’s only a few tickets left. So if you want to be part of something special, get through.
