Best Essay Writing Software: 16 Apps That Can Help You Write Perfect Essays

Nowadays, we have apps for almost anything. Writing apps though, are really unique and serve several practical purposes, such as essay writing for example.

Writing an essay isn’t as simple as typing a bunch of words and arranging them as paragraphs. Writing a perfect essay entails planning, maintaining structure, writing clear and impactful sentences, and using good grammar.

That’s why we have writing apps. So in this post, I’m going to cover all the best essay writing software tools that are available now.

Okay, let’s get into it!

Our Top 3 Essay Writing Software at a Glance

Prowritingaid, the 16 best essay writing apps.

Best Book Writing Software.

Scrivener is a book-writing software program developed—13 years ago—by an aspiring writer Keith Blount.

Scrivener is what you get when you combine a typewriter, ring binder, and a scrapbook and make a book writing software tool.

It has so many useful features that take your book or any other writing project from the outline to a finished draft. We’re talking of features like corkboards, pre-set formatting, templates, file importing, metatags, automated document listing, and a bunch of other important capabilities.

Scrivener can be used by novelists, scriptwriters, academics, lawyers, translators, journalists, and students.

Pricing: Scrivener for macOS costs $49, iOS is $19.99 , and Scrivener for Windows costs $45.

Best Grammar Checker.

As far as grammar checkers go, there’s no app better than this.

It’s perfect for checking your text for typos, punctuation, and spelling mistakes.

But it goes further than that; it has several editing features that tackle issues such as passive voice, lengthy or complex sentences, offers broader vocabulary options, et cetera. It also has a plagiarism checker and furnishes you with writing stats and readability scores.

Grammarly has a free version but reserves the best features for its premium plans.

Pricing: Free and Paid. Grammarly Premium starts at $11.66, and Grammarly Business starts at $12.50.

Excellent Tool for Self-editing

ProWritingAid is one of Grammarly’s fiercest competitors and pretty much gives you what Grammarly gives you.

Just itty-bitty shallower, BUT way more affordable.

If you want a proofreading and grammar checker writing app that has the potential of helping you improve the overall quality of your writing, this is it!

ProWritingAid refines your writing by checking important elements of your writing such as ambiguous sentences, grammar, transitions, abstract words, overused words, etc.

Over time, you start to notice improvements in your writing, especially the way it flows.

Pricing: Free and Paid.

  • Monthly – $20
  • Yearly – $79
  • Lifetime – $399

Best note-taking tool for Students

Evernote is a simple but excellent writing app that uses the idea of virtual notes. The virtual notes can be used in several ways: making book shopping lists, writing down essay ideas, and making notes on researched information.

The notes are backed up on Evernote’s servers, and you get about 60MB of storage space per account.

Pricing :  Free and Paid. The Premium plan costs $7.99 / month, and the Business costs $14.99/person/month.

Focus Writer

Free Alternative to MS Word.

I haven’t used this free word-processing app yet, but I’d seriously consider replacing my beloved MS Word with it.

It’s a very good alternative to MS Word; in fact, not only is it free and sufficient, it is available on almost all major platforms— Windows, Mac, and Android.

If you’re a student, I’d recommend this software, and you won’t have problems using the documents from this app because they’re saved in Rich Text Format so that most word processors can read them.

Pricing: Free.

Excellent for the Creative Stage of Writing

Before you write a good essay, you need to build the idea behind the essay first.

You need to add fresh to the bones before bringing the beast (of an essay) to life.

This tool helps you expand your original ideas into sub-ideas and construct full-fledged essays by using expressive, powerful flowcharts, process maps, and other diagrams.

Pricing: Free and Paid. The Awesome Plan costs $5/month, and the Organisation Plan is at $8/member/month.

Top-Notch Open-Source Tool

Manuskript is a tool perfect for organizing and planning stages of writing. It’s an open-source tool—for writers including novelists, journos, and academicians—that uses the snowflake method of writing to help you build your idea into a finished book; by helping you create the story step by step.

It has features for helping you keep track of notes on characters, plot, event,  and place in your story. Manuskript’s features include:

  • The Outliner, which lets you organize your ideas and little pieces of your story hierarchically;
  • The Distraction-free mode gets rid of all distractions;
  • Personal goal-setting features;
  • The Novel assistant utilizes the snowflake method to help you develop your basic ideas into a coherent plotline or a full-fledged story.

Pricing: Free

LivingWriter

Fast Developing Tool

This is a different writing app altogether. It has a lot of features that are excellent for both fiction nonfiction writers. It has features that help with story elements, general notes, goals and targets, doc sharing, and stats.

Plus, you can also switch LivingWriter in and out of Dark Mode and focus mode.

One thing I like about LivingWriter is that it started with a single platform (web) but is now expanding rapidly.

It has iOS and Android applications, Full integration with Grammarly, Canva integration, and its desktop apps are 90% complete (according to the Living Writer Roadmap )

Yearly Plan – $96 billed once a year

Monthly Plan – $9.99 per month

Best Writing Tool for Apple Products

I don’t know about now, but Ulysses was big back then (like a dozen years ago or so).

The app is rich with features similar to the other word processing software. It comes with a Markup-Based Text Editor, a library for organizing notes and documents, features for setting writing goals, publishing capabilities, and many others.

Ulysses is perfect for both small essays and large academic ones.

Pricing : Ulysses has different pricing options for different regions but using the US plan, it costs $5.99 per month and $49.99 per year.

Hemingway Editor

An App Most Impactful Writing

The Hemingway Editor AKA Hemingway App is a simple tool for writers who want to write content that is easier to read but bold.

Hemingway does this by looking at elements of your writing such as adverbs, passive voice, phrases and words with simpler alternatives, hard-to-read sentences, very-hard-to-read sentences, and other “lexical atrocities.”

The web-based version is free, but the downloadable version (for Mac and Windows) is a paid tool.

Pricing: $19.99

Excellent Mind Mapping Tool

They used to call this app IMindMap. Ayoa is an essential tool in the planning stages of your essay writing.

You can create mind maps for your essays which help give direction when you start fleshing out your essay.

This mapping tool helps increase productivity because everything you need to write is already outlined. The fact every step is already planned and you know exactly what to write can also increase your daily word count.

Pricing : The Ayoa PRO plan costs $10/month and is billed annually. The Ultimate Plan costs $13/month and is also billed annually.

Best App for Multi-Lingual Essays

This is another incredible alternative to Grammarly.

For non-native English speakers, this is a pot of gold right here. It can check your text for grammar errors and translate Spanish, French, German. And many other languages.

As a grammar checker, the tool mainly looks at aspects such as verbs, adverbs, confused words, commonly misspelled words, etc.

Here’s a funny story about Ginger (Just happened today.) As I was using the web-based editor, I copied some texts on Ginger’s website and pasted them into the editor and the tool found one misspelled word. Their content writers must not have used Ginger.

I felt like Ginger’s content writers were like Drug dealers, you know, they followed rule number one of drug dealing. “ never get high on your own product.”

  • Monthly Plan – $9.99
  • Yearly Plan – $74.88
  • Two-Year Plan: $119.76

Write Or Die

Best for Productivity Purposes.

This app has a name that sums up life for some of us.

Write or Die!

Write Or Die gives rewards, stimuli, and punishments if users set goals. This is what you need if you are a sloth like myself.

It gives you that needed push because the punishments—which include erasing current texts—can really scare the hell out of you and make you put an extra gear.

Pricing : Free and paid. $10 for macOS and Windows, and $1 for iOS.

Simplest Writing App

IA Writer is a distraction-free writing app that is more than perfect for writing short essays.

It has a very basic interface and uses plain text. As I said, there are no distractions because the IA writer also has a full-screen mode that fades out everything else but the line you are currently typing.

This minimalist writing app is available on Windows, Android, iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.

Pricing : Paid (offers free trials).

macOS- $29.99. has a 14-day trial

iOS &iPadOS – $29.99. No Free Trial.

Android – $4.99 /year or $29.99 once. Has a 30-day trial.

Windows – $29.99. Has a 14-day trial.

Hubspot Topic Generator

Best for Generating Topic Ideas.

This is a whole different menu right here.

It’s very different from the tools that I’ve listed in this post. This is why… you’re not going to use it to write. Instead, you use it to automatically generate writing ideas.

It’s a very simple tool; you input three words, and it provides you with nouns to generate a topic idea that you can use on your next writing project.

If you’re going to use this tool, it’s going to be during the very first stages of your writing project.

Manuscripts

Best App for Academic Assignments

Manuscript (not to be confused with Manuskript from above) is an app for students and academics. This is a convenient tool that works with popular word processing apps, including Microsoft Word.

The reason why it’s perfect for academic writing is it excels at the referencing aspect of writing—citations, abbreviations, etc.

So, for class writing assignments and larger tasks like dissertations, this is the tool I’d recommend.

Pricing : Free

Simplenote is a note-taking tool that helps you keep all your notes in one place but accessible everywhere.

You can back up your notes, add tags, share the notes with collaborators, and publish your notes in Markdown format.

Supported Systems: Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, Linux.

Guide to the Best Essay Writing Apps in 2021

Things to consider when choosing essay writing software.

A good essay writing software has to do things that make your essay look delectable and sound convincing.

Here are some of the things that an essay writing software need to be able to help you with:

Organization

I already talked about organization at the beginning, so you already know how important it is. The essay writing app has to help you arrange your essay and ensure that it flows nicely. It needs to clear the chaos that would have existed had you not used that specific tool.

Grammatical correctness

This is crucial in any writing project. The essay writing software has to help you correct your grammatical and spelling errors.

Proofreading

The proofreading capabilities of a good essay writing app go beyond checking for grammar and spelling mistakes. It also has to excel at checking other aspects like overuse of adverbs, passive voice, run-on sentences, weak writing , and readability.

Writing software doesn’t have to cost an arm. Most of these apps have similar features and pretty much do the same things. A higher price doesn’t necessarily mean the app is good but in some circumstances, apps are pricey for a good reason.

What Features Should an Essay Writing App Have

So, to achieve the above requirements, what features does a writing software need to have?

Below are the most important features that a good essay writing software program MUST have.

Grammar and Spelling checker

To achieve the overall grammatical correctness of your essay, a writing app needs to have a grammar checking feature. If it doesn’t, being integrable with an efficient grammar checking tool is also convenient.

Sentence structure and flow reports

Again, I cannot overemphasize the importance of structure in essay writing. The structure should start from your sentences to your paragraphs and the whole essay. A good essay writing app needs to have features that check aspects of structure and flow.

Punctuation checker

We can’t have an essay littered with semicolons, commas, and hyphens looking like they’re lost. Punctuation might be one of the most underrated features but make no mistake, it’s essential for professional writing.

Plagiarism checker

A good essay has to be unique and original. Therefore, essay writing software has to make sure that the body of the essay does not contain any plagiarized content.

Writing Metrics

Stats like word count, words per minute, or the number of pages are important for tracking progress. School essays usually have a word or page count requirements, and writing software must be equipped with writing metrics so that the user is kept abreast of the distance covered.

Sentence quality checker

In the writing profession, Quality matters.  It doesn’t matter if you have reached the minimum word count but the essay is of poor quality.

Writing apps must be able to pick out sentences that need improving or deleting due to poor quality writing.

Why Should You Use Writing Software to Write Essays?

Writing software won’t write your essay for you, but the writing process is hard to manage and that’s what these tools do.

Here are the benefits of using writing software:

1. Planning and Outlining

Planning is an important element of a good essay writing process. Writing software tools come with features that help you plan before you start writing.

For example, Scrivener has a feature called corkboard, which is a good planning tool. It’s like a set of digital index cards, and each represents a section of writing.

With writing software, you can plan and outline before the actual writing starts, and you can go back to the outlines and notes while writing.

2. Productivity

Productivity is a big problem for most writers. Writers like myself just write without setting a lot of writing goals, so when we feel like writing, we need to be at our most productive levels.

For those that set daily goals, maintaining a daily word count is not easy.

For both kinds of writers, writing software can help increase productivity.

The software tools come with writing stats to help you keep track of your progress. They also have features for distraction-free writing.

Templates also help increase productivity. The templates make things easier and save you a lot of time (which would have been used setting things up).

3. Editing and Formatting

Writing software tools come with features that can flag spelling & grammar mistakes and other errors. They also offer solutions to these errors.

This is very important for your editing process—it makes the editing stage easier and faster.

This also helps in increasing productivity since editing is less laborious and speedy.

Usually when we write essays (especially academic ones), some formatting requirements come with them. Writing apps are furnished with most of the formatting rules and styles that essays (academic or otherwise) may require.

4. Organizing

Writing can be a messy process.

Most often than not, essays also require a lot of research. And again, we’re not saying that writing software will help you research.

But when you get all the bits of info needed for your essay, the apps will help you keep the researched content organized.

With these writing apps, you can have all of your research organized and easily accessible.

The thing about a disorganized writing process is that it is reflected in the flow and structure of the essay.

How to Effectively Use Essay Writing Software

Let me reiterate, essay writing apps won’t write your essays for you, neither will they be correct all the time.

To get the best out of them, you need to treat them as writing tutors or co-writers. If they suggest something useful, take it on board, and if you feel like the suggestion is a bit off point, disregard it.

What Is a Perfect Essay?

A perfect essay convincingly speaks to the reader. An essay is like an argument or a speech, and it has to have a readable flow or show direction.

Perfect essays must contain arguments, supporting ideas, and most importantly, evidence.

To write a perfect essay, you need to:

  • Thoroughly plan the whole essay before you start writing.
  • Start writing your arguments using a clear structure.
  • Back up your points and refer to relevant sources if necessary.
  • Make sure that you infuse the information with creativity. There’s nothing exciting about a bunch of truths thrown into an essay using bland sentences.
  • Before you finish your draft, ensure that you’ve answered the question in your introduction and conclusion.

How can I write an essay on my phone?

Well, most of the apps listed here are available as mobile apps. If you feel it’d be okay to write on your phone, try out a couple of the apps on this list and see which one works better on mobile platforms.

I’d recommend using tablet computers as they have bigger screens than regular smartphones.

Final Words

There are just so many essay writing software tools nowadays that even though Scrivener and Grammarly top the list, stumbling on the best one for you is almost 1/1000 probable.

You have to try out these tools before purchasing them.

Just to say it for the one-thousandth time, essay writing apps won’t write your essays for you; YOU WILL.

In theory yes but that will require a lot of work and professionals dedicated for this job. We are considering a way of letting the community participate somehow.

Typely does not do grammar checking because it's hard and almost impossible to get right. The aim for Typely is to be precise and reliable.

11 Apps That Write Essays for You (and Improve Quality)

Last Updated on February 28, 2023 by Alex Birkett

Writing essays is a time-consuming task.

It requires research, structuring, formatting, and plenty of editing. As such, it’s no wonder that students often seek out help from external sources.

One of the most popular solutions in recent years are essay writing apps.

But what exactly are they? And do they work as advertised? Let’s dive into the details.

What Are Essay Writing Apps?

Essay writing apps are digital tools that help you to write better essays.

They typically come with features like spellcheckers, grammar checkers, and idea generators to help spur your writing process forward.

Some also offer pre-written content that you can use as a starting point for your own essay.

The idea is that these tools save you time and energy so you can focus on crafting great ideas instead of getting bogged down with tedious tasks like proofreading or finding research materials.

Do Essay Writing Apps Really Work?

The short answer is yes – but with some caveats.

While these apps can certainly be helpful in terms of providing assistance with proofreading and idea generation, they won’t be able to write entire essays for you from scratch like some people may believe.

Moreover, while some apps offer pre-written content that could be useful as a starting point for your essay, it’s important to remember that this isn’t an excuse to plagiarize or copy other people’s work without crediting them properly; if caught doing so, it could have serious consequences for your academic career.

What Are the Best Essay Writing Apps Available?

The best essay writing apps will have some of the following abilities:

  • They generate net new content
  • They help you format and ideate the structure of your essay
  • They improve your writing style
  • They have grammar, spelling, plagiarism, and style detection
  • They can help you research factual information about the topic
  • They’re “multi-purpose tools” that allow for custom functionalities
  • They’re affordable.

I’ll judge the following of the best essay apps below on the above characteristics.

Editor’s note: I’m going to use some affiliate links when possible to try to earn some revenue from my content. These don’t change the opinions espoused in the content nor the style in which they are written. If I think a product sucks, I’m not going to say otherwise. This is just a bonus and a way to fund the whole operation. Anyway, enjoy the article!

Jasper  is an AI-powered essay writing app that helps you organize, write, and format your essays faster.

It’s functionally an all-purpose AI text generator , with a Google Docs / MS Word style editor you can use in conjunction with custom commands.

You can also hook it up with Grammarly to find spelling mistakes, punctuation mistakes, run on sentences, and other grammatical mistakes in real time.

They’ve got a few different modes (as part of their broader Boss Mode plan):

Focus mode is for pure writing, a simple word processor (but with an AI assistant attached). The focus writer is where I spend a lot of my time in this tool.

Chat mode is just like ChatGPT (more on that later)

SEO mode hooks up with Surfer SEO  to give you keyword suggestions in addition to your regular spell checking and generative essay writer functionality.

And power mode unlocks all of their use case templates, recipes, and commands.

Overall, Jasper is hands down the most powerful AI writing software. Premium features like SEO mode, Chat mode, and Power mode are only available on their Boss Mode plan, so I’d opt for that one.

It does seem to struggle with research papers and reference materials, so make sure you’ve got your citations on lock before you start writing. They also lack a web clipper tool, but their browser extension tool does give you the ability to write content everywhere.

They also have drawing tools and art generation capabilities , by the way.

Price : Starts at $24/mo. Boss Mode plan begins at $49/month

Frase is a web-based writing tool that uses AI to help writers create high-quality essays quickly.

They’ve got a whole suite of SEO tools , including a content brief and content research tool, content optimization software, and generative AI  tools to help you write content.

Their content brief and research tool is of particular interest here.

Most of the best essay writing app options on this list focus only on text generation or rewriting; few focus on actually helping you format your piece in the first place, which is often where the hard work is.

Then, for their AI writing tool, they feature a ton of helpful templates, including “explain why,” “bullets to paragraphs,” and a metaphor / analogy tool:

Price:  Only $14.99/mo ($12 per month when paid annually).

ChatGPT  was launched in 2022 by OpenAI (the creators of GPT-3, which powers most of the writing software on this list).

It has brought generative AI to the mainstream, and it’s already one of the best writing apps for all purposes.

It acts as a chat interface, so it’s much more intuitive than many of the dedicated AI writing software out there.

Basically, you can ask it or prompt it to write…anything. I’ve used it to generate creative stories, write love poems, make me ideas for essays, improve my writing skills, and build outlines for SEO-focused content.

Let’s walk through a use case. I took a history class in college called “US history from 1945 to the present.” I’ll ask ChatGPT to create me some topic ideas:

Screen shot 2022-12-25 at 6.09.16 pm

Pretty good! I like the cold war idea, so I’ll ask it to create an outline for me:

Screen shot 2022-12-25 at 6.10.10 pm

Okay, maybe I’d want to change up a few pieces of this, but let’s go with it. Here’s the full essay:

Screen shot 2022-12-25 at 6.11.25 pm

Crazy! And that’s just a first pass. I could further tweak the outputs with better instructions.

This stuff is getting scary good.

4. Writesonic

Screen shot 2022-12-27 at 11.51.54 am

Writesonic  is a YC-backed startup that makes generative AI tools capable of writing essays.

I’m a big fan of this product.

They’ve got a ton of ready-made templates to get you started out (including a few that are great for writing essays). They’ve also got a few templates that can help you improve your writing style or even rewrite content so its better formatted.

Finally, they’ve got a Google Docs style editor for long form writers so you can use commands and write alongside the AI.

G2 Score: 4.8/5

Screen shot 2022-12-27 at 11.49.48 am

Copy AI  is another AI copywriting tool  built on top of GPT-3.

It primarily writes essays through use case templates. A few that are popular for the writing process include:

  • Essay intro
  • Essay outline
  • Explain like I’m 5
  • Sentence rewriter
  • Analogy generator

For example, look at this need little essay writer app that lets you build an outline for your essay:

Screen shot 2022-12-27 at 11.26.05 am

The sentence rewriter and analogy generator are two examples that can help you improve your writing style.

Copy AI doesn’t have the same flexibility and power that Jasper and ChatGPT have, but it’s much easier to use. The templates are well set up and foolproof. And they have many that actually help you format text and design the scope of your piece, not just write it.

Overall, I’m a big fan of this tool.

Price:  Free for up to 2000 words and then $49/mo for unlimited word counts.

6. ProWritingAid

Screen shot 2022-12-27 at 11.52.27 am

ProWritingAid  is a cool professional writing software that uses AI to generate content.

It’s great for academic papers and academic writing. Unlike many other essay writing services, this one incorporates grammar checking, spell check, style checking, plagiarism checking, and word count into the content they produce.

They’ve built custom solutions for higher education, teachers, non-native English speakers, and creatives.

I like this one because it lets users create content from scratch, but it’s also got features to improve your writing (this is powerful for college students especially).

Got some handwritten notes that you want to whip up into a good essay? This one is great at processing hand written notes and producing great content.

Pro Writing Aid works via browser, but they’ve got integrations that allow for offline access and desktop software as well – such as a Scrivener integration and an MS Word integration.

Overall, a great product with a free app that allows for up to 500 words.

Price: Completely free for up to 500 words, and then $10 per month for unlimited use.

G2 Score: 4.5/5

7. Speedwrite

Screen shot 2022-12-27 at 11.52.45 am

Speedwrite  is one of the most popular writing applications out there. It helps you write essays from scratch as well as rephrasing your existing content.

How’s it work? Basically, through “predictions.” You just enter text and hit the “predict” button (they call their text generations “predictions”). This then takes your content and paraphrases it using their artificial intelligence.

This makes it useful for everything from writing notes to polishing up existing texts.

They’ve got tons of users (roughly 500k+). They claim to have written millions of lines of text, and all of this is fresh, original content with good style and grammar.

While Speedwrite has some downsides (it’s not great with structured diagrams or starting with a blank page), it’s still popular. Anyway, there are a ton of great Speedwrite alternatives  you can check out.

One cool thing is you can use this tool completely free.

Here’s an example of a “prediction” based on the above text.

Screen shot 2022-12-27 at 11.32.50 am

Price:  Free and the only $19.99 per month

Lex is a new AI writer that I’ve just started trying out. I love it so far.

It’s different from the others. It’s aimed at writers. Many of the other tools help non-writers produce content. This one is no-frills, just a Google Docs / Microsoft Word style editor and an auto complete functionality.

And to be honest: the outputs are pretty darn good. I only write the first two sentences here and then let Lex finish it:

Screen shot 2022-12-27 at 11.57.29 am

Lex can also be used on both ios devices as well as android devices (instructions in the app).

Screen shot 2022-12-27 at 11.59.33 am

As far as I know, the tool is free, but I’m sure they’ll introduce a standard pricing model soon. You have to get on a waitlist to get access.

Price : Free

Screen shot 2022-12-27 at 12.12.45 pm

Rytr  is a similar tool to Jasper, Copy AI, and Writesonic. It was also built on GPT-3 technology, so it’s got many of the same outputs and templates as these tools.

The biggest difference with Rytr is its price. They’re one of the most affordable apps that write essays for you, starting at just $9/mo (plus a free plan).

This is a great starter app.

Price: free, and then $9/mo

G2 Score: 4.7/5

10. Hypotenuse AI

Screen shot 2022-12-27 at 12.10.18 pm

Hypotenuse AI  started out as an ecommerce-focused AI tool, but it has since expanded.

Like other tools on this list, they’ve got one of the best essay writing capabilities out there.

The reason I’m adding them to this list, though, is their content detective feature. This allows you to research content with citations. Most tools suffer from factual inaccuracies, which is obviously a huge problem when it comes to academic writing.

Hypotenuse is working to solve that, and for that, I applaud them.

Price: Starts at $24/mo

G2 Score: 4.4/5

11. Word AI

Screen shot 2022-12-27 at 12.07.23 pm

Word AI  is a sweet tool built for two things: content rewriting, and scale.

You can essentially do like 1000 rewrites based on your initial content. This is helpful for SEO folks hoping to do link building and guest posting at scale.

For the essay writers among us? It’s great for coming up with clear copy and rewriting your piece to enrich your text, split sentences, and improve the clarity of your writing.

I will say, transparently, this is not one of my favorite tools out there. I think it’s a little clunky for most use cases and it’s best for spinning up a ton of content for SEO.

However, I wanted to include it on the list because it’s one of the best at content production at scale.

Price:  $57/month

G2 Score: 3.9/5

At the end of the day, essay writing apps can be incredibly useful resources if used correctly by students or writers who need assistance crafting their stories or arguments more effectively and efficiently than ever before.

However, it’s important to remember that these tools don’t replace actual human effort – they’re meant to supplement it – so make sure not to rely too heavily on them or allow them to take away from the creativity in your own work!

In that way, “apps that write essays for you” is sort of a myth. You’ll still need to provide the human intelligence 🙂

With all this in mind, don’t forget to do your own research into which app is right for you before committing – good luck!

Outstanding Application & Support

I've been using Essayist for years as for a while I only had an iPad as my main driver yet had to write papers for school and this was the only applicaiton that allowed me to do so on the iPad while not only maintaining all APA formatting requirements but making it even easier to cite articles with it's Google Scholar search function. I've also had a couple of times where i'd reach out to their customer support and they were prompt in responding with answers or even potential updates and timing. I highly recommend this app to every student at every level as I used it through my MBA and i'm not using it to complete a doctorate.

Developer Response ,

Hi. Thank you very much for your kind review! We wish you all the best for your doctorate :) Till

Just short of perfect, but the glitch is significant

This is an excellent app all things considered. I wish it was around when I was in college. It would be perfect in my mind but for one thing…..exporting. There is an export feature - and it exports, it just does so without carrying over any of the formatting. You can fix it in one of two ways. Get rid of the feature, and do not claim that essayist can export to word or docs with formatting, or make it work. This is an app that costs money. The export feature as it currently functions might as well not be there at all. If you do not need to export, if you are happy to simply do the entire project on essayist it is perfect. Problem is most professors are not using is, so yes…fix the export feature please. It does hurt the value of the product in my mind.
Hi. We are happy to hear you like Essayist! Regarding export: Exporting to Word should work with all formatting intact. I have myself noticed that the preview in Word on iOS can have a glitch and sometimes look like the formatting is off, but once the file is saved and you are in editing mode it’s all there. Please contact us at [email protected] so we can better assist you. Kind regards, Till
This app really is great and I recommend it for anyone writing papers and rely on citing sources. Some items I hope to see in future updates: 1. Auto-capitalize first word after a period. 2. The app does show a word count but it ony shows it for the whole paper. (It ignores word count in citations, which is perfect). I hope it is added where you can select a certain amount of text and it show you how many words are selected. 3. Allow references from other papers you have written to be imported into a new paper. For instance you might have to cite the same textbook in many papers over the course of a class. It would be conveneint to not have to go and locate and add it each time but have it populate from another source since you have alraedy gone through the effort of adding it before. 4. Remove the setting where the reference window is always on top. It is very cumbersome since you can't drag and move it and it is always on top of other windows. Thanks for the great app!
Hi, thank you so much for your review and feedback! We love hearing from our users :) The word count feature is a great suggestion that we will look into adding, and we are currently working on an update that will allow users to add references from other papers. We will also work on an update to change the reference window setting. We can see how this could be cumbersome. As for the autocapitalization issue, Essayist should already auto-capitalize after a period. Could you email us at [email protected] about this issue? Kind regards, Erin.

Great list! I've been using Grammarly for a while now, and it's been a lifesaver. The grammar and spell-checking features are spot-on, and it has improved the quality of my essays. I'll definitely check out some of the other apps to write my essays mentioned here. Thanks for sharing!

As a language enthusiast and writer, Jotterpad caught my attention. The ability to express creativity and write poems and narrative essays with this app sounds wonderful. I don't mind investing in the paid version for additional features. Thanks for introducing me to it, and I can't wait to give it a try!

Hemingway was my favorite app for essays😩 I like the UI, but the desktop version is sooooo expensive. Overall, it's fantastic..

I can't imagine my college life without Evernote! It's perfect for organizing my notes and keeping track of assignments. I love the ease of use and the fact that I can access my notes from anywhere. Definitely one of the best apps out there!

As a college student, I'm always on the lookout for useful essay apps. I've used Evernote before for note-taking, but I didn't know it had additional features for planning and organizing. I'll have to explore its Premium options.

I've been using Google Docs for a while now, but I'm open to trying other alternatives, especially offline essay apps, as I travel a lot. This list gives me plenty of options to consider!

I love the idea of using Hanx Writer for a nostalgic typewriter experience… It sounds like a fun way to get creative with my text. I'll give this app a shot with an english essay and see how it feels🙃

Getting a passing grade on an essay assignment is difficult if students don’t know how to organize their ideas. Bloggers can also not get high SEO rankings when they plagiarize their writing.

If you’re looking for applications that help you write better essays, I compiled a list of the best essay writing software. These apps include both free and paid programs. I included tools to help you improve your grammar and an app that writes essays for you.

10 Best Essay Writing Apps

2022 05 19 12

Grammarly is one of the best writing apps you can try for your essays. It helps you perfect your essay or any writing project by giving detailed explanations for its corrections.

For instance, if you mistakenly use “see” instead of “sea” in your sentence, Grammarly will tell you why it’s wrong. This editing software is the most popular writing tool because it focuses on correctness, clarity, engagement, and delivery.

While it doesn’t help you summarize or format your essays, it can fix issues like your spelling, grammar, writing style, and punctuation. Grammarly lets you set your writing goals so it can tailor its corrections according to your essay’s intent, audience, and emotion.

Grammarly Premium gives you access to a plagiarism checker. It examines your document against billions of websites and articles while providing links to any duplicate content.

The editing tool has a more straightforward interface than ProWritingAid. Or you can download the free extension for Chrome and Safari if you want to receive real-time suggestions on Google Docs.

Grammarly is also available as a desktop or mobile application, Grammarly Keyboard. The keyboard app quickly spots spelling mistakes and other issues on your text messages, email, and social media.

  • Built-in spelling and grammar checker.
  • Produces more grammar reports than other apps.
  • Guarantees original content through a plagiarism checker.
  • Multiple platform availability.
  • Not ideal for long-form writing.
  • Free version is very basic.

Pro Writing Aid

ProWritingAid Checker

ProWritingAid is a cloud-based tool that enhances your writing in different ways. It’s not a word processor or rewriter for essay writers but an editor for users who want to improve their grammar and spelling.

The premium version can spot over 20 errors in your essay, including repeated sentence starts and over-reliance on adverbs. The writer can also take advantage of readability reports, sticky sentences, and subject-verb disagreement.

The online editor not only corrects your grammatical mistakes. It also helps you become a better writer. For example, using adverbs and the passive voice are not necessarily “errors.” But avoiding these elements can help your essay readers engage with your content better.

Aside from checking grammar, ProWritingAid also scans your essay for plagiarism. It ensures your document is original and free from duplications. The essay writing software provides a link to the source so you can correctly cite it.

ProWritingAid has browser extensions and a desktop version. The powerful tool also features a 14-day trial for writers who want to test it first. You can also use it in Google Docs, Scrivener, and Chrome.

This advanced grammar checker is available for $20 per month or $79 per year.

  • Simple interface.
  • Wide platform availability.
  • Twenty-five types of writing reports.
  • Free trial.
  • Lifetime plan.
  • Unnecessary features like sticky sentences.
  • Slow loading time.

Writing essays becomes more motivating when you use FreeMind. This software isn’t your typical editing tool that performs grammar checking. It helps you achieve daily goals in writing through structure diagrams and project tracking.

This app for writing essays improves your writing habit by letting you add subtasks for each activity. It will allow you to organize your essay ideas on any topic to produce impactful writing.

Another extra feature of Free Mind is its time recording element. Brainstorm your work, use colors, and take advantage of DES encryption to produce and protect your mind maps.

  • Helps users make flowcharts and mind maps for essays.
  • Perfect for other types of project planning.
  • Protects your work from being lost.
  • Completely free.
  • No grammar-checking tool.
  • Difficult to use for first-timers.
  • Not specifically designed for essay writing.

Edusson

Among the numerous writing applications, Edusson is the most interesting for its wide variety of features. The essay writing app writes essays for you, ensuring they are free from grammar mistakes and have a proper sentence structure .

Content writers will save more time coming up with a topic idea for their next post. An additional feature of Edusson is its self-help resources. The website also includes essay samples its writers produce to let everyone know they make high-quality papers.

Edusson does not offer offline mode because it’s not an AI writer. The app lets you order assignments for a real writer to write. These writers also ensure that your work is free from grammatical mistakes.

Whether you write blog content, academic papers, or magazine articles, this assignment writer is for you. Use it on your desktop or download the mobile application for more writing ideas.

  • Real writers help you with your essay.
  • Ideal for other types of writing.
  • Easy to use for beginners.
  • May take time before you get your assignment.

SimpleNote

If you’re looking for an essay writing app with a basic interface made for note-taking only, Simplenote is your best choice. Like other writing tools, it lets you jot down ideas and concepts for your document. But it doesn’t have advanced features.

You can organize your text through Markdown, a standard syntax like HTML but more straightforward. If you’re a web developer or a programmer, you know how fantastic markdown is for readability.

Long-form writers benefit the least from Simplenote because the app is developed for hand-written notes and ideas. It also doesn’t feature a virtual proofreader, file importing, and comprehensive formatting.

  • Best app for writing notes.
  • Markdown support.
  • No grammar and spell check.
  • No automatic writing tool.
  • No file imports and lists.

Libre Office Writer

Libra Office Writer

Writer is LibreOffice’s app for essay writers that is available for free. Its free yet advanced writing abilities are inspired by Microsoft Word. It has basic features like font styles, sizes, insert pictures, layout settings, and referencing. It also displays your character count.

The desktop app is ideal for academic writing that requires strict formats and layouts. It’s an excellent alternative to Google Docs and Word, the most popular word processors on the market.

One downside to Libre Office Writer is its lack of a built-in grammar and spelling checker. You need to edit your work on third-party tools like Grammarly for corrections.

  • Free alternative to MS Word.
  • Comprehensive formatting and layout options.
  • Reputable word processor.
  • No grammar checker.

Scribus

Scribus is a fantastic choice among writers who want to produce aesthetically pleasing projects. Millions of writers use this software for reports, magazines, academic writing, or even your personal journal.

The open-source tool doesn’t help you organize your ideas or correct grammar. Instead, it focuses on one aspect of your writing: your book layout. You can use the Layers, Outline, Styles, and Properties to style every page of your book.

Many believe actual writing starts with the look of your document. Scribus is like a basic version of Adobe InDesign and Affinity Publisher. Use it for your essays, academic texts, and self-published books.

  • Improves the layout of your written work.
  • Free.
  • No option for checking your spelling and grammar.
  • Dated design.

Focus Writer

Focus Writer is a free word processing app you can use as an alternative to MS Word and Google Docs. The distraction-free writing app has a focus mode that blocks other windows and menus. All you have to do is write on the blank page.

But the essay writing services also offer several formatting options for different aspects of writing. Move your cursor upwards to reveal the menu. Focus Writer lets you set goals for your daily word count with a percentage bar displayed below to show your improvement.

You can use Focus Writer for simple essays, personal thoughts, and critiques.

But I don’t recommend it for academic writing. It also doesn’t have a built-in file editor for spelling errors.

  • Straightforward interface.
  • Runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux.
  • Limited export formats.
  • No collaboration options.
  • No writing templates.

Evernote

Evernote is a note-taking application for hand-written notes. You can create checklists, to-do lists, and other organizational elements in individual files. As an academic writing software tool, Evernote uses thematic Notebooks to help you group your writing projects into subjects.

One of the most valuable features of this app is its template gallery. The dozens of templates make Evernote a common choice of essay writers in work and school. It also has a clipper tool where you can take clippings and snippets from any site.

Evernote is also the only application with features for optical character recognition technology. That means this app for writing papers also searches scanned images of hand-writing.

  • It helps users write to-do lists, notes, etc.
  • Web clipping.
  • Clean interface.
  • Collaboration features.
  • Basic free version.
  • It keeps changing the layout and startup screen.

Jasper

Jarvis or Jasper AI is not a proofreading software or a note-taking tool. It’s an app that writes essays for you without the user having to do anything. It works using Natural Language Processing to write paragraphs of blog articles for you.

The main focus of Jarvis is SEO. All the pieces of content it automatically writes ensure they will rank high on search engine result pages. It can also finish your first draft two to five times faster than a human.

This artificial intelligence software is perfect for content writers who must produce dozens of essays weekly. Use this tool for social media posts, ad copies, and blog posts.

  • Automatic rewriter.
  • SEO integration.
  • Doesn’t include a plagiarism checker.
  • The final piece of writing still requires human editing.

Is There a Software That Will Write Essays for You?

Many desktop and mobile software can automatically write essays for you. These “bots” are powered by artificial intelligence to make the writing sound human-like.

Some essay writers only require you to insert keywords or a specific topic. Then, it will create everything else for you. Jarvis or Jasper AI lets you pick a template, narrow the subject, and click “Generate AI content.”

Other AI writers need you to copy and paste a piece of text from other sources. Then, it will rewrite the entire content for you. Quillbot is a paraphrasing tool that produces plagiarism-free content for you. It can also summarize, shorten, or expand your writing.

Best Free Essay Writing Software

The best free essay writing tools you should have are ProWritingAid and FreeMind. The former is editing software that offers spelling, grammar, and style correction, while the latter helps you brainstorm your next essay. These two software programs are completely free.

Use FreeMind to plan your next essay. Different mind maps, time recording, and project tracking features will help you brainstorm your topic.

Once you’re done writing your essay, run it on ProWritingAid to check for issues. It provides over 20 writing reports to make your written document error-free and readable.

Research Paper Writing App

Some essay writing apps are specially developed for writing research papers, theses, and dissertations. For example, Libre Office Writer has all the formatting settings you need to write your research, including page numbers, text alignment, and a bibliography.

Another research paper writing app you can consider is Evernote. Although I wouldn’t recommend writing your research on this app, you can use this tool to make notes. Use it to organize your review of related literature, analyze your findings, or structure your intro.

There’s a Tool for Every Writing Goal

So many tools exist to help you plan, write, and edit your essays differently. I hope the list of best essay writing software stated above saves you more time and makes you a better writer.

My top choices are ProWritingAid and Grammarly because writers in all fields need them for proofreading purposes. Which essay writing tool are you trying first?

What makes a good writing app?

Put simply, what makes a writing app good for you will depend on the kind of writer that you are.

  • If you’re an author , you might be interested in a writing app with outlining, planning, and formatting functionalities.
  • If you’re a student , you’re probably in the market for a writing app that blocks out distractions while you’re writing.
  • If you’re a screenwriter , you’ll want a writing app that’s specifically dedicated to writing screenplays.

Or, if you’re none of the above, worry not: that’s why we built this directory of writing apps. Whatever you need, we’ve gathered the outstanding writing apps of 2024 across multiple categories (drafting, editing, note-taking, etc) and platforms (Android, iOS, online browsers, etc) in one place. Feel free to use the filters to make your quest for the perfect writing app even easier!

So what are the best writing apps of 2024?

We can now put an end to the age-old debate of which writing app is best: Microsoft Word vs. Google Docs ?

The answer, of course, is neither! Hopefully, this directory will point you towards a much better match that actually fulfills your writing needs. We objectively evaluated each writing app based on four metrics.

  • Performance: How seamlessly does the writing app do what it’s purported to do? How good is the user experience, from top to bottom?
  • Features: How many bells and whistles are built into the app to augment its use?
  • Accessibility: Is it widely available on many different operating platforms (e.g. iOS, Windows, mobile, desktop, etc)?
  • Value: Is it worth the cost that it would take to download it?

Here are some general recommendations to give you a headstart.

Free writing software FAQ

Here are some questions lots of people have about writing apps and how to choose the right one.

What's a good free writing tool?

Tools like Google Docs and WordCounter are free forever and very functional. Other apps, like Grammarly or ProWritingAid, have free plans that offer basic features, with more advanced features available via a paid plan.

But there are a lot of free writing tools available that perform a wide variety of functions—everything from brainstorming to research and note-taking to writing to editing to proofreading.

What writing tool do most writers use?

There's a wide variety of writing tools out there, and which one a writer uses really comes down to preference. A lot of writers use Google Docs to write because they already use Google for so many other things—but some may prefer a tool like Notion, where they can combine writing with project management.

What makes a good writing tool?

In short, whatever helps you write! If a blank page and no distraction is what helps you actually get words down, then open a new Google Doc and go at it. If you need to organize your thoughts before you even think about writing, consider adding a brainstorming tool to the mix. Each writer's process is different, and it's all about finding tools that enable your writing, not add another roadblock to your process.

app to make essay

For most of human history, writing tools were pretty basic. While there were important advances in technology such as the invention of paper, the printing press, and later the typewriter, it was all just physical marks on a physical medium at the end of the day.

Word processing software was a huge leap forward, forever changing the process of drafting and archiving. The core technology of word processing has remained more or less the same even into the 21st century, but we have seen major advances in the organizational and brainstorming tools available to writers.

The result is our current landscape, in which hundreds (if not thousands) of writing apps compete for your attention, all claiming to revolutionize the way you write.

Which apps are worth your time? This article will help you decide, exploring a variety of writing apps to improve the way you brainstorm, draft, edit, and publish your work.

Whether you’re a student, knowledge worker, or professional writer, you’ll find something useful below.

Mind map in Coggle app

Overview: A digital mind-mapping tool that’s great for brainstorming.

Mind-mapping is a powerful tool for brainstorming writing and drawing connections between ideas. Traditionally, the technique involves drawing shapes on paper and connecting those shapes with branching lines.

These days, however, you aren’t confined to making paper mind maps. Coggle lets you create digital mind maps that are saved to the cloud and accessible across devices. And unlike on paper, you can edit and rearrange the mind maps as much as you want without worrying about running out of space.

If you’re struggling to come up with writing ideas, then Coggle could be the creative boost you need.

Price: A free version is available with up to 3 private mind maps (and unlimited public ones). The paid version starts at $5 / month and includes unlimited private mind maps, extra shapes, and additional formatting options.

Platforms: Web

Evernote app interface

Overview: A long-standing writing and note-taking tool that’s still valuable today.

Evernote was the first note-taking and personal knowledge management app I ever used. I recall how mind-blowing it was at the time to create a searchable archive of notes, articles, PDFs, and whatever else I found interesting.

Since then, Evernote has exploded in popularity. While many other apps have emerged that claim to replace or surpass it, it remains a powerful tool for writers.

You can use it to take notes, write outlines, or even produce full drafts of essays or articles. You can also use Evernote’s Web Clipper to quickly save articles and other web pages to read later or access offline.

If you’re looking to create a “digital notebook” to hold your ideas and fuel your creativity, Evernote is an excellent choice.

Price: Most features are free. Evernote Premium is $7.99 / month and includes additional features for searching, sharing, and organizing your notes. Students can get 50% off their first year of Evernote Premium .

Platforms: Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, Web

Looking for more tools to take notes? Check out our guide to the best note-taking apps .

Google Docs

Google Docs app interface

Overview: The original collaborative, cloud-based writing app remains an invaluable part of many writers’ workflows.

Google Docs needs no introduction. When it was released, its collaborative, real-time writing and editing features were revolutionary. Now, such features are commonplace (even expected) in most cloud-based writing and note-taking tools.

Despite this, I’ve continued to use Google Docs for all of my professional writing, and it’s still the tool I recommend for everyday writing work.

The interface is clean, it automatically saves your work to the cloud, and the backing of Google means it’s unlikely to disappear (something you can’t say about the latest and greatest writing apps).

If you want a writing tool that just works, Google Docs is the app to use.

Price: Free

Platforms: Android, iOS, Web

Cold Turkey Writer

Cold Turkey Writer app interface

Overview: If you’re procrastinating on a writing project, Cold Turkey Writer will force you to focus.

Your computer is a powerful tool for writing, but it also includes lots of potential distractions such as social media, video games, Netflix, and Wikipedia rabbit holes. Cold Turkey Writer eliminates these distractions.

When you launch the app, you tell it your writing goal. This goal can be either a number of words or an amount of time spent writing. After you’ve done that, Cold Turkey will block every app on your computer (internet included) until you’ve met your writing goal.

This might seem extreme, but that’s why it’s so effective. When you remove other options, you’ll be amazed how much writing you produce.

Note that while Cold Turkey Writer is an excellent tool for producing distraction-free drafts, it doesn’t include many formatting options. So you’ll need to use it in conjunction with an app like Google Docs or Microsoft Word if you plan to print or publish your writing.

Price: Most features are free. A one-time payment of $9 (CAD) will get you additional formatting and theming features.

Platforms: Mac, Windows

Scrivener app sales page screenshot

Overview: A popular tool for long-form writing projects such as novels, screenplays, and dissertations.

Long-form writing presents unique challenges compared to writing essays, blog posts, or other short pieces. One of the main challenges is organization. How do you keep track of what you’ve written? And how do you arrange your writing into a cohesive whole?

Scrivener aims to solve these problems. It includes all the standard word processing features you’d find in an app like Word or Docs, but it also includes features for organizing, navigating, and editing your writing projects.

You can quickly see all your project’s chapters, sections, or scenes at a glance. And you can quickly rearrange these items to help you put together your final manuscript.

Other handy features include:

  • A virtual “corkboard” to help you plan your writing structure
  • The ability to split documents into smaller chapters or sections
  • Tools for displaying reference material such as images, PDFs, or web pages (without having to leave the Scrivener app).
  • Options for exporting your work as a PDF, Word Doc, or even a Kindle ebook.

Price: One-time purchase of $49 for a single desktop license (Mac or Windows). Students and academics can receive a discounted license for $41.65. The iOS app requires a separate purchase of $19.99. A 30-day free trial is also available.

Platforms: Mac, Windows, iOS

Novlr app interface

Overview: Aimed at novel writers, Novlr includes extensive tools to organize and track your long-form writing projects.

At first glance, Novlr seems similar to Scrivener. And while the two apps do share a lot of features in common, Novlr is different enough that it’s also worth considering.

To start, there’s the Novlr interface. Compared to Scrivener, it’s much more minimalist. However, don’t mistake this minimalism for a lack of features and power.

Novlr lets you see an overview of your writing sections and chapters as you work, and it constantly saves your writing (much like Google Docs). There’s also a “Focus Mode” that hides the interface so you can concentrate on the current chapter or section.

Most of the above features are available in Scrivener. Where Novlr really stands out is in its style and grammar checking features.

As you write, Novlr will show you suggestions for fixing grammar, spelling, and even making your writing more concise. And unlike a lot of writing apps that only mark errors or suggest corrections, Novlr includes explanations for each of its suggestions. This way, you can learn to be a better writer as you use the app.

Overall, I think Novlr is a better tool if you’re focused on novel or fiction writing, while Scrivener is better if you plan to write nonfiction. Scrivener’s tools for organization and research material are superior to Novlr’s, while Novlr is hyper-focused on being the best tool for novelists (and no one else).

Ultimately, both apps have free trials, so I encourage you to test out each and see which is better for your long-form writing needs.

Price: $100 per year or $10 month-to-month. A 2-week free trial is also available.

Platforms: Web (also works offline and on mobile devices)

Byword app interface

Overview: A simple Markdown writing app.

Byword is a Markdown text editor that aims to help you write faster. If you’re not familiar with Markdown, here’s a good explanation . Basically, it’s a way to write plain text that you can then quickly convert into HTML (saving you the hassle of manually writing HTML).

If that last paragraph made your eyes glaze over, don’t worry; there are plenty of other apps in this article for your needs. But if you regularly write for the web, learning Markdown (and using a Markdown editor such as Byword) can save you a lot of time.

Byword lets you write documents in Markdown and then export them as HTML, Rich Text, or a PDF. You can also export your writing directly to a publishing platform such as WordPress, Medium, Blogger, or Tumblr. If you already use Markdown (or want to learn it), then Byword is a tool you should look into.

Price: One-time purchase of $10.99 (Mac app) or $5.99 (iPhone and iPad app)

Platforms: Mac, iOS

Written? Kitten!

Written? Kitten! app interface

Overview: Get some extra writing motivation with pictures of kittens, puppies, or bunnies.

Writing the first draft is always the hardest part. If you need some motivation to get those words onto the page, then check out Written? Kitten!

This web app shows you a picture of a cute animal of your choice (kitten, puppy, or bunny) every time you write a certain number of words.

It’s a great tool if you need to write an essay of a certain length or if you have a goal to write a set number of words each day.

750 Words app showing writing statistics

Overview: A private, online journal that helps you build a daily writing habit.

“Write every day” is a common New Year’s Resolution, but it can be tricky to stick to. If you’re looking for an app to help motivate you, check out 750 Words .

As the name implies, 750 Words is an app that helps you build a habit of writing at least 750 words (about 3 pages) per day. When you log in to the app, you’ll see nothing but a place to write. As you type, the app keeps track of your progress and lets you know when you’ve passed 750 words. The app also saves your work so you can review it later, and everything is completely private.

In addition to the writing features, 750 Words shows you insights about your writing such as how many days in a row you’ve written, your average words per minute, and the mood you were in (based on the words you use).

Whether you’re looking to write as a creative exercise, to learn more about yourself, or because some stranger on the internet like me told you to, 750 Words is a great way to get your thoughts onto the page.

Price: Free for 30 days, then $5 / month.

Daily Page app sales page

Overview: Daily Page sends you a new writing prompt each day and gives you a distraction-free space to write.

Don’t know what to write about? Daily Page provides a solution.

Each day, the app emails you a different creative writing prompt. Just click the link in the email, sign in to the app, and write your entry. If you prefer free writing, the app gives you the option to do that as well.

In addition to the writing prompts and motivation, a subscription to Daily Page also gives you access to several writing courses on topics such as screenwriting, blogging, and storytelling. While I can’t vouch for the quality of the courses, it’s an interesting feature that you don’t see in a lot of other writing apps.

Price: $4.99 month-to-month or $47.88 / year.

Grammarly app interface

Overview: An app that checks (and automatically corrects) your grammar, spelling, and more.

The school system generally does a terrible job of teaching grammar. Combine that with the fact that English spelling is an illogical disaster, and it’s no wonder that we all struggle with writing “mechanics” to one degree or another.

The grammar and spell check tools in your word processor can help, but they still miss a lot of mistakes. This is where Grammarly comes in.

Grammarly checks your writing for mistakes in spelling, grammar, and usage. When it finds a mistake, it will highlight it and explain what’s wrong. You can then choose to accept the correction or ignore it.

To get the most out of Grammarly, I recommend installing the browser extension . With this, Grammarly will automatically check your writing everywhere from your email to Google Docs to online forms. Prefer to write offline? Grammarly also has standalone apps that you can paste your writing into, as well as extensions for Microsoft Word.

Even as a professional writer and editor with a degree in English, I use Grammarly every day. It speeds up the editing process and finds mistakes that spell check tends to miss. While its suggestions aren’t correct 100% of the time, it’s still a valuable tool for any kind of writing (except maybe poetry).

Price: All the features I described above are free. You can upgrade to Premium for $29.95 / month to get additional features such as vocabulary suggestions, plagiarism checks, and readability suggestions.

Platforms: Android, iOS, Mac, Windows, Web. Browser extensions are available for Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge. A Microsoft Word extension is also available.

Hemingway interface

Overview: An app that helps you make your writing easier to read.

When you’re writing a draft, the thoughts often come out of your head in a jumble. During the editing process, it’s your job to make this jumble understandable. To help you out, I recommend the Hemingway app .

Hemingway’s goal is to remove anything unnecessary from your writing. This could be complex sentences, passive voice, adverbs, or big words. While none of these are “wrong” to use, removing them often makes your writing easier to read.

Whenever Hemingway encounters something it thinks you should remove, it will highlight it. Next to each highlight, you’ll see a suggestion for improvement. This could be anything from using a simpler word to shortening a lengthy sentence.

In addition to stylistic suggestions, Hemingway also displays some useful statistics about your writing, including readability, word count, and estimated reading time.

If you purchase the desktop version of Hemingway, you’ll get additional features such as the ability to publish directly to WordPress or Medium and the option to export your writing as HTML, Markdown, Word Doc, or PDF.

For maximum editing power, combine Hemingway with Grammarly.

Price: Web version is free. Desktop versions (Mac and Windows) are each $19.99.

Platforms: Mac, Windows, Web

Blurt interface

Overview: Blurt helps you build a daily writing habit while removing distractions and teaching you to be a better writer.

Do you love the writing experience of Medium, but are looking for some additional tools to help you focus? Then Blurt could be the app you’re looking for.

To start, Blurt asks you to define the project you’re working on. Options include a journal, blog post, book, newsletter, or essays. After you’ve defined your project, Blurt prompts you to set a daily writing goal for it. You can even specify the time of day you want to write, and Blurt will send you an email reminder to do it.

Once you’ve set your goals, it’s time to write. The Blurt editor is very minimal, with most formatting options hidden by default. As you write, Blurt offers spelling and readability suggestions. The readability suggestions are similar to those in Hemingway, including adverbs, difficult to read sentences, and even cliches.

If you find yourself getting distracted while writing, Blurt lets you launch a “Writing Session.” This session will challenge you to write for a set amount of time or to write a certain number of words. And if you struggle with self-editing, Blurt can blur your words as you type. This helps keep drafting and editing separate.

Finally, Blurt gives you the option to export your work to Medium, Twitter, Facebook, or Markdown (and it also supports Markdown syntax while writing).

Price: 15-day free trial, then $14.99 / month.

Quetext app interface

Overview:  A free, web-based plagiarism checker.

Plagiarism is a serious offense both in school and the professional world. Not only is it wrong, but it could damage your grade (or even get you expelled or fired in extreme cases).

Luckily, plagiarism is easy to avoid if you properly cite your sources and use a plagiarism checking tool like Quetext . Quetext uses advanced natural language processing to compare your writing to billions of documents across the internet. If the app detects any potential plagiarism, it will highlight it in your document.

Even if you don’t think your document contains plagiarism, it can’t hurt to check (particularly when there’s an app to make it so easy).

Price:  The Free plan includes 5 plagiarism checks per month (enough for most students). For unlimited plagiarism checks, citation suggestions, and priority support, you can upgrade to the Pro plan for $9.99 / month.

Platforms:  Web

Coffitivity

Coffitivity app interface

Overview: Recreate the sounds of a coffee shop in the comfort of your home.

If you enjoy writing in coffee shops, then you should give Coffitivity a look. The app recreates the sounds of a coffee shop within your web browser. This allows you to feel like you’re in a coffee shop (and potentially focus better) without leaving your house.

In a time when many coffee shops are closed to the public, this is an especially valuable service. I like to mix the app’s sounds with instrumental music to create a more immersive experience, but that’s up to you.

And, of course, you’ll need to provide your own coffee.

Price: Free. For $9 / year you can get access to additional coffee shop sounds.

Brain.fm app interface

Overview: An app that uses specially-designed music to help you focus.

Listening to music is a common way to focus on all kinds of projects, writing and otherwise. However, listening to music while writing can be distracting, particularly if the music contains lyrics or interesting melodies.

Brain.fm solves this problem. The app uses a variety of compositional and sound design techniques ( backed by science ) to create music specifically for focusing.

When you sign in to the app, you tell it what your goal is: focus, relax, or sleep. Once you select your goal (which would typically be “Focus” for writing), you tell the app how long you want to focus. Brain.fm will then start playing music designed to help your brain enter a flow state .

I find Brain.fm to be especially helpful if I’m procrastinating or struggling to finish a difficult project. I recommend combining it with the Pomodoro technique for the ultimate focused writing experience.

Price: $6.99 / month or $49.99 / year. A free, 3-day trial is also available.

For more music to help you focus, listen to our study playlist .

Zotero app interface

Overview: A free tool for organizing academic sources and generating citations.

When you’re writing a thesis, dissertation, or research paper , it can be tricky to keep track of your sources. You could keep a list of them in a text document, but that relies on you remembering to update it. And when it’s time to cite your sources, it could take hours to assemble that list into a properly formatted bibliography.

To make it easier to manage your research, use Zotero . Zotero is an open-source app for collecting, organizing, and citing sources of all kinds.

Once you’ve installed the Zotero browser extension , you can quickly pull citation information from library pages, JSTOR, online journals, and just about any other digital source you can think of. The result is a database of sources that you can quickly search and reference.

And when it’s time to submit your final draft, Zotero can generate a bibliography or references section in the citation format of your choice (APA, Chicago, MLA, and thousands more ). The app also includes tools for collaborating on papers with other researchers, and you have the option to store all your Zotero data in the cloud.

Platforms: Mac, Windows, Linux, Chrome, Firefox, Safari

Honorable Mentions

Below, you’ll find a few other apps that I use regularly in my writing work. I didn’t give these their own sections because they’re either too specific to my work or have a waitlist. But I still think they’re super useful and worth a look:

  • Capitalize My Title – A web app that converts your titles to the proper “title case.” I use it to check the title and subheadings of my articles, but you can also use it to properly capitalize the titles of essays or research papers.
  • Roam Research – The app I use to take notes, journal, and record article ideas. While extremely powerful, I didn’t give Roam its own section because there’s currently a waiting list to access the app. You can learn more about Roam in our full review .
  • Docs to Markdown – This Google Docs add-on lets you export your work as HTML or Markdown. I use it when I’m transferring an article from Google Docs to WordPress. But it could also be a useful tool for copywriters or web designers.

Your Brain Is the Ultimate Writing App

I hope this article has helped you find an app to make your writing process more efficient, pleasant, or focused.

Ultimately, writing apps are just there to enable you as a writer. To get better at writing, you need to practice it, get feedback, learn, and repeat.

cost of help for assessment

Sometimes writing an essay from scratch   is just so overwhelming that you can’t get it done within the specified deadline.

You have to do brainstorm the topic, do preliminary research by evaluating primary and secondary sources, create an outline, write your first draft, and refine your work.

Add to this countless classes to sit through and additional assignments to complete and schoolwork can be quite overwhelming.

Thankfully, Help for Assessment has developed a platform that can help you get your essay written fast.

We combine technology and human intervention to help you write an essay fast while maintaining the uniqueness of every paper.

Help for Assessment is the most competitive writing solution online.

Whether you need:

  • An essay written fast
  • Help with dissertation
  • A term paper completed in the last minutes
  • An annotated bibliography written and edited or
  • Help with Theory of Knowledge

Help for Assessment is the right platform for you.

2. Grammarly

Grammarly

Grammarly is the best spelling and grammar checker app on the web.

Available for Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android, Grammarly helps you to refine your writing by fixing spelling mistakes, punctuation errors, word choices, long sentences, wordiness, fragments, and more.

Its powerful algorithm checks your essay for correctness in seconds, and it does that automatically without requiring human intervention.

We highly recommend Grammarly because it allows you to write in different formats and styles, including academic documents.

While it’s not useful for long-form text formatting, Grammarly is the best technology for students who need a free grammar checker and those who are on a tight budget.

3. Evernote

Evernote

You have to do in-depth research to write a comprehensive essay on an assigned topic or a topic of your choice.

For your research phase to be effective, you have to consider using an app that allows you to take notes as you go. Evernote is our best recommendation.

Evernote is one of the best cross-platform note-taking apps, which allows you to take clipped web content and hand written notes from your Android, iOS, and PC device.

We do recommend that you use this app to organize your research materials, including your primary and secondary sources ,  annotated bibliography, and essay outline.

Even more helpful is the To-Do list feature, which allows you to organize yourself so you can start and complete your essay writing in time.

In a way, Evernote has an interface similar to many word processor. With rich features that allow you to format text accordingly, similar to what you can do with Microsoft Word, Evernote lets you plan, organize, and even write your essay wherever you’re.

4. FocusWriter

FocusWriter

FocusWriter isn’t feature rich, but it’s the best writing app to install and use if you need a distraction free writing experience.

Available for Linux and Windows PCs, this free, open-source writing lets you write quicker without looking anywhere else. With FocusWriter, it’s just you and a blank page.

You aren’t getting many formatting options with FocusWriter, so it might not be useful for editing.

However, we do like that it takes over an entire desktop when you launch it, so you’ll never get distracted notifications from social media, emails, and other desktop apps.

Some of the best features of this essay-writing app include customizable themes, multi-document support, spell-checking, portable model, typewriter sound effect, timers and alarms, and basic ODT file support.

5. Turnitin

turnitin

The last thing learning institutions want to deal with is students who copy other people’s work and use it as their own.

To put it simply, plagiarism is one for the biggest mistakes you should avoid when writing your essay, and the best way to do that is to use Turnitin.

The goal of this robust web-based application is to uphold academic integrity, a strong theme that has seem hundreds of colleges and universities integrating the use of their system into their learning culture.

Today, Turnitin can detect purchased essays   with copied content, even if the act of plagiarism in question was unintentional.

Based on our understanding, Turnitin is a helpful tool to add to your list of essay apps because it helps you to ensure you submit high quality and original essays to your instructors for review.

6. Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word

It’s easy to forget Microsoft Word when talking about essay writing apps for students, but it’s one of the market leaders with a ton of great features.

Even with competing solutions such as the Libre Office Suite available for free download, Microsoft Word continues to become popular by the day – with a user base that just keeps growing.

Microsoft has been working on this app since 1983. With uncountable revamps over the years, we’ve seen Microsoft add dozens of cool features that easily extend the functionality of the app.

That way, you can write essays and format them appropriately before submitting them to your professor.

With Microsoft Word, you can create documents with standard academic formatting, add images if your assignment requires you to, check grammar and spelling mistakes, and even including 3D models if your instructor ever asks you to do so.

Microsoft Word isn’t readily available for free download on the brand’s website. But you can always get a copy from a friend who has an active license.

Also, there’s an app for Android and iOS , and these ones are available for free download. So whether you want to create content on your laptop or you want to write that essay on the go, you will find this app incredibly useful.

7. The Hemingway App

The Hemingway App

The Hemingway App is a web-based writing solution that deserves a shout out, in part because it’s 100% free to use.

Here’s the thing:

You’re going to make many mistakes when writing your essay, and that’s a completely natural process.

Yet given that you cannot submit that assignment without editing your piece, you need a solution that can help you identify and fix the errors and do so very fast.

That is where the Hemingway App comes in.

The Hemingway App is a powerful web-based editor that allows you to make the necessary changes on your essay as you write.

The Hemingway app not only help you fix grammar issues and correct spelling mistakes, it also makes it easy for you to improve the readability of your content so your essay is easy to read and understand.

Unlike Grammarly, the Hemingway App won’t go deep into grammatical lessons. However, what you’ll love about it is its ability to assess the readability of your essay and give you suggestions that you can use to improve your assignment.

The best thing about Hemingway Editor is that it’s free to use. You don’t even need to register an account online to use it. All you have to do is to go straight to the website and start editing your essay. It’s that simple.

8. Hanx Writer Review

Hanx Writer Review

You deserve an excellent writing experience right from the moment you start working on your essay to the time you finish, and there’s no better way to do that than use an essay-writing app that performs flawlessly.

The Hanx Writer is one such solution, an option you can use in place of Microsoft Office.

This is a mobile-based writing solution that’s available for iOS users.

Unlike many writing apps ever built, Hanx Writer immerses you into a realistic writing experience of a real typewriter on the iPad.

To be more realistic, the developers take the sound and movements of an actual typewriter and put them right in the app. So you can get a more realistic touch of hammer, carriage, and carriage return lever.

People do have mixed opinion about this writing app, and we believe it’s a good consideration for students who want to write their essays with the least interruption possible.

Moreover, you’re running this on a mobile device, which means you can take it anywhere with you to work on your essay whenever you have something to add on the document.

To be clear, Hanx writer doesn’t allow you to export your writing as text file because it saves your work as PDF document. Also, creating a new document can be somewhat tiresome because you have to tap a number of menus.

9. Canva

Canva

Canva may not fit tightly into the category of writing app, but we think it’s an important content creation tool to use in the case where you have to include graphs and images in your essay .

It’s by far the most popular graphic design software on the web with over 30 million active users.

It’s available for free use, although there’s a pro plan that gives you access to thousands of pre-built graphics, illustrations, infographic, and images that you can use straight out of the box.

So if your instructor ever asks you to include graphs, charts, and images in your essay, and you feel like you have no idea where to get them, Canva can make a really big difference.

10. Pro Writing Aid

Pro Writing Aid

Pro Writing Aid is another popular solution that can help you write great essays any time.

Like Grammarly, the tool helps you check you essay for grammar and spelling mistakes, so you can submit an error-free assignment to your instructor.

There is a free version of the app and the paid membership starts at just $20 a month. So if you’ve been searching for the best alternative to Grammarly, the Pro Writing Aid can be a great choice.

Final Thoughts

While there are many apps that you can use to plan, organize, outline and write your essay, we found these 5 to be the most helpful ones. They are not only easy to use, but are also available for free access.

The option to upgrade to a premium package, if any, will more often than not be optional.

Since you don’t need many rich features to write your essay from start to finish, the free versions of these apps with the basic features should be more than enough.

Lastly, don’t feel lost if you’re struggling with your essay. Check out our write my essay for me service and let us know how we can be of help. Help for Assessment replies within 5 minutes.

'I missed the miracle of pregnancy because I was busy hating my body'

Trainer Kelsey Wells shares her honest thoughts on postpartum fitness

That time in my life was incredibly challenging. I had anticipated feeling pure, unadulterated joy after the birth of my baby. And while I did experience moments of that joy, there were darker feelings there, too. I felt inadequate caring for my son and was haunted by the fear of failing him. I went through moments of detachment from him, each accompanied by an overwhelming sense of shame.

My personal body image struggles were also worse than ever. I couldn't recognise my own postpartum body in the mirror, and I continuously picked myself apart, tearing myself down. I knew there was nothing inherently wrong with my body–I had just given birth to a baby–but when I looked in the mirror, I just felt shame. And I was desperate not to feel that way.

I started getting debilitating panic attacks. The first one struck the evening before my husband, Ryan, had to go back to work. Anderson was just five days old and I knew I would be on my own with our baby the next day. The sun started setting and with it, extreme panic set in. I felt a pressing weight on my chest, my stomach tied in knots, my palms started sweating, and before I knew it, I was hyperventilating and spiralling. It felt like I couldn’t breathe.

Many panic attacks followed that first one. They occurred randomly and frequently in the early months of motherhood, and I kept them hidden because I thought they meant I was failing at my role as a mum. My doctor ultimately referred me to see a therapist, but I refused because I was embarrassed (I felt a lot of stigma around my mental health at that time). My doctor also talked to me about trying medication for my anxiety, but I refused that too. As a last resort, she suggested exercise.

Looking back, it’s clear that I had a really unhealthy mindset when it came to my self-worth and body

Mentally, I was trapped in a web of toxic, self-limiting beliefs, and physically, I felt weak and out of touch with my own body.

From the age of 16 until the birth of my son, I had lived a mostly sedentary lifestyle. I would enthusiastically sign up for a new workout program or routine, only to quit after a few days or weeks, telling myself that I couldn't stick with anything. Fitness for me had always been rooted in the belief that I needed to shrink and take up less space. Dealing with a newborn and a new, postpartum body only exacerbated these feelings. I was willing to try anything that could help me recognise myself again. So, when the doctor suggested exercising for my mental health, I decided to go for it.

When I first started working out, I was amazed at how quickly I started to see benefits— not in how I looked in the mirror, but in how I felt. I realised later, that this was the first time in my adult life that I had ever attempted to exercise out of an effort to help myself heal, rather than hate for my body.

At the beginning, it was as simple as putting Anderson in a stroller and taking a walk around the block

This was my first attempt at regular exercise, with the goal of clearing my head and getting my body moving outside. After a month or two of walking, I googled “ home workouts ” and printed out some PDFs I found online. These 30-minute workouts included basic exercises like push-ups , lunges , and sit-ups , which I attempted to do in my basement apartment while Anderson napped. I would quietly roll out my yoga mat , borrowed from my mom, and give the workouts a try. I was met with exceeding frustration at first with my inability to physically do what I thought were basic exercises, but still I tried. Slowly, I began to get stronger.

Now, at 35-years-old, I share posts on social media where I'm lifting heavy weights , and people say it’s so boss and badass. But I can tell you that the most intense, gruelling, demanding, and boss-badass workouts I've ever experienced were those postpartum ones , when I could barely do anything. It took everything to get through what I could of those workouts.

But even as I built momentum, I still often felt like a stranger in my own body. I struggled to do a single sit-up, let alone a push-up.

My mindset finally started shifting after a personal epiphany, and an open conversation with my husband

One day, after hearing me take a jab at myself, my husband lovingly sat me down and said it hurt him to hear me speak about myself in such a negative way. He challenged me to say three kind things about myself for every negative thing I said to myself—either in my mind or out loud. He was so sincere, and I committed to him that I would try. It was very uncomfortable at first, but it helped me realise just how bad my negative self-talk was and how deeply I wanted to heal. (Over time, I have also incorporated other practices like meditation, journaling, and gratitude practices.)

I purchased personal trainer Kayla Itsines' BBG workout program (now called “Sweat”) , and kept doing my best—this time consciously challenging the negative commentary in my head. I followed the program as best as I could. After a few months, I joined a local gym and discovered the weight training area. Three times a week, I would wake up at 4:45 AM, so I could train before my husband left for school and work, and go to this mental sanctuary. It felt like a gift I was giving to myself.

That first year of my fitness journey was exceptionally personal and private. I fell in love with fitness. The changes I was trying to make in the way I spoke to myself, combined with the physical strength changes and newfound commitment to caring for my health made me feel empowered inside and out. And as I started to feel the mental and emotional benefits, my curiosity about the science behind it grew.

I completed a certified personal trainer course through the National Academy of Sports Medicine, and got my CPT certification. I then went on to get my prenatal fitness and postnatal fitness certifications because I felt there was a lack of information available for new mothers like me, and I wanted to fill that gap.

I started my Instagram account about fifteen months into my fitness journey

There was a lot going on in my life at that time. I was still struggling with my mental health and postpartum challenges while also going through a significant transition away from the church I grew up in. I needed a safe space where nobody cared about my religious beliefs, so I began a fitness Instagram account.

I vulnerably shared personal “ transformation” posts of my body at eight weeks postpartum to where I was then on my fitness journey, portraying both my physical transformation in the photos and describing in the caption the deeper changes you couldn’t physically see. The posts quickly began to trend and my account grew to over 50,000 followers within weeks.

I got a lot of negativity and judgment from people in my real life about my posts. I was told by women I considered friends at the time that people were gossiping about me and judging me, and that what I was posting was embarrassing. In hindsight, I understand that when you’re growing in a different direction and shifting away from the person you used to be, it can sometimes be alarming, threatening and uncomfortable for the people around you. But with the support of my husband, I drew a line in the sand for myself, saying, 'I'm going to stand behind this, and I'm not going to hide anymore. I'm going to be proud.'

I doubled down and began sharing more on social media. In January of 2017, I joined Sweat , the workout program co-founded by Kayla Itsines, and in May 2017 the Sweat app launched, debuting my first program. It was one that deeply resonated with me: a post-pregnancy strength training regimen.

These days, I focus on empowering new mothers and creating healing spaces

I try to create an environment where they can remember their inner strength, rather than fixating on the idea of "getting their body back." I hate that phrase.

It's so important for women to remember that their body is art, that it’s their soul’s sacred home, and for them to reclaim movement as the empowering practice it was always meant to be. My entire Redefine Fitness method is based on this idea. In my program, I encourage women to heal their relationship with physical movement, by setting intentions, using affirmations and giving gratitude to their body.

For some, that empowerment means regaining their former strength, for others, they’re building it for the first time. The fact that a woman's body can bring a new life into the world is nothing short of miraculous. And in this delicate and unique phase, it's devastating to see women burdened with shame and unrealistic expectations–whether self-imposed or from society–to "bounce back" or reclaim their pre-baby body. It's crucial for women to be gentle with themselves.

I now have 13 training programs, hosted in Sweat, to help women in different phases of life. I have few regrets in life, but one of them is that I missed the miracle of growing a child and giving birth because I was too busy hating myself and my body throughout that process. Now, I can look back and recognise how my negative self-talk affected me. Over time, I began to realise that the more I cared for my body, and helped it get stronger, the more I learned to love myself and remember that it was worth caring for. That's why I'm so passionate about helping other women feel the same way.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned so far is negative self-talk and shame are often the biggest obstacles standing in someone’s way

Life is too short to waste time worrying about what you're putting in your mouth and what you think is wrong with your body. Nothing you consume is as detrimental to your well-being as shaming yourself for your dietary choices or your appearance.

Making a change doesn't have to be overwhelming. It's about adopting an abundance mindset. When I began my fitness journey, I was consuming more Dr. Pepper than water. So, I challenged myself to hydrate with two litres of water daily. I could have my soda if I wanted it, I would simply still drink my water. I stopped labelling certain foods as "bad" and instead focused on making small, incremental changes that could fit into my lifestyle.

It's not a matter of saying, "I can't have this," or "I won't do that." It's about giving yourself more—more compassion and grace. And more nutrients, protein and strength—because you deserve it.

I know that we have a long way to go, but I do feel like I'm seeing a shift happening: More women are recognising that their bodies are worth loving and caring for. And nothing has taught me that more than discovering my own strength after having a baby, and then helping other women do the same.

Turn Your Latest Adventure Into an Insta-Worthy Reel With These Video-Editing Apps

Geoffrey Morrison

By Geoffrey Morrison

After a day of adventuring, it’s time to sit back and share your videos with friends and strangers online. If all you want to do is post highlights of your day’s activities, that’s no sweat: Any social media platform you use will have the editing functions you need to post basic clips.

To make posts that grab and keep viewers’ attention, and perhaps even “go viral” in the process, you need to do more serious editing. Both an art and a skill, well-executed video editing seamlessly carries a viewer’s attention through a story.

Our action camera picks from GoPro and Insta360 have great free mobile apps that can get you started—often with AI-assisted automatic edits—and can also move clips from your camera to your phone. But if you prefer to go deeper, CapCut does just about everything right.

Capcut is the best action-cam editing app, gopro and insta360’s apps are perfect for beginners, what about imovie and youtube create, a few editing tips.

Best third-party video-editing app

This app is free and easy to use, and it has nearly every feature you need in a mobile video editor. You can even transfer in-process edits to the desktop version.

Buying Options

CapCut ( iOS , Android , Windows ) is one of the best-reviewed editing apps, and it’s easy to see why. It just works. It’s intuitive, it has lots of useful features, and best of all, it’s totally free.

This app can’t stand alone: You still need your camera’s native app to move clips from your camera to your phone. But it offers the most complete set of editing features available in a free app, plus deep integration with TikTok (the apps are made by the same company, ByteDance). It also has AI features, including one called AutoCut that automatically creates a video from clips, plus text-to-image generation.

CapCut makes it easy to add the clips you want, trim them, adjust their colors and contrast, insert transitions, and quickly produce a polished, professional-looking video. It offers templates that give you a framework to start a video, as well. You can add captions, effects, and filters, and you can output videos at up to 4K resolution.

It’s an in-depth video editor, which means newcomers may take longer to get comfortable, but taking the time pays off in the long run with the app’s additional depth. For even more elaborate edits, CapCut’s mobile app can transfer editing projects to the desktop version.

Like most free apps, it occasionally shows you ads. We didn’t find them obtrusive, but CapCut may add more ads with a future update. If the ads bother you, consider the Insta360 app (discussed below), which is a free alternative with minimal ads that are only for that company. Another way to avoid ads is to upgrade CapCut to the paid Pro version, which also lets you edit videos longer than 15 minutes and includes a lot of templates, transitions, AI features, and cloud storage. The Pro version is $10 per month, however. Most people should be fine with the remarkably robust free version and its occasional ads.

Additional tips:

  • CapCut adds a logo at the end of videos, but you can disable that in the settings under “Add default ending.”
  • It gives you the option to export to TikTok to remove the CapCut watermark. If you select this option, it removes the watermark from the current video and all future ones, even if you don’t have TikTok installed. This workaround may change or stop working in the future.
  • Make sure to select “HD” when selecting clips to edit, and verify that the resolution, frame rate, and “Code rate” (aka bit rate) are set to your preferences before exporting. Higher resolutions and bit rates take longer to export but ensure better picture quality.
  • Some of the music in the app is available only if you also export to TikTok, but you can always add music later in your chosen social media app.

If you have a camera from GoPro or Insta360, it’s worthwhile to spend some time getting to know the respective official app. For one thing, you need to use that app to move clips to your phone. And while CapCut and other third-party editing apps have more options, beginners can get most of what they need from these official apps alone.

Best for GoPro owners and beginners

This app lets you easily create videos, with optional cloud uploads and automatic editing (albeit at the cost of an annual subscription).

GoPro Quik ( Mac and iOS and Android ; Windows version coming later in 2024) lets you control GoPro cameras remotely and also includes a solid editing suite. Compared with more robust editors like CapCut, Quik is best for beginners who want a little hand-holding as they learn the ins and outs of the editing process.

Quik’s most useful feature is its ability to automatically upload videos to the GoPro cloud, which then edits them together into a single highlight video with music and transitions that it delivers to you ready for posting. You need a yearly subscription to access this feature, but it also gives you unlimited storage for footage that you capture on your GoPro camera.

This automatic editing works as expected, in that you get a single video containing all of a day’s footage in an almost entirely hands-off manner. However, the result is usually more of a place to start your own editing process than a polished, finished product.

For instance, Quik has trouble recognizing upside-down footage, and it can often highlight and linger on boring shots for an inexplicably long time. Fortunately, you can easily go into the video and adjust the individual clips, the length of the overall video, the music, and so on.

  • Once you download the footage from your camera into the app, no matter what you do you’ll need to save it again to your phone’s picture gallery in order to find it. Otherwise it stays “stuck” in the app.
  • Sometimes the automatic video takes a while to come back from the cloud. If you don’t want to wait, you can manually select clips and have the app create a video from those. This method prevents you from doing anything else with your phone for the duration of the processing, however.
  • When manually editing your video, you can also add any other images or videos from your phone not recorded with the GoPro camera.

Best for Insta360 owners and people who want to edit 360 video

This robust and surprisingly elaborate video editor has more depth than GoPro Quik and also offers some AI-enhanced features, including automatic edits. But it takes some time to master.

Insta360’s app ( iOS , Android ) has a lot more going on than GoPro Quik—visually, at least—but the core features, including remote camera control and video editing, with optional automatic video generation, are very similar. The editing tools are more robust than Quik’s, offering more control over your videos with a layout similar to CapCut’s.

If Quik is for beginners looking for a bit of help as they learn, Insta360’s app is a great middle ground between that and CapCut. If you're already familiar with mobile video editing, you can find just about every feature you want here, minus some of the more advanced AI features and TikTok integration from CapCut. But Insta360’s app also provides some free features, such as a variety of transitions between video clips, that CapCut gives you only in its paid Pro version.

If you’re editing 360 footage, you need to use the Insta360 app to make shareable clips, even if you want to send it to CapCut later on. Editing 360 video takes a few extra steps compared with “normal” video, but the app does a great job of making the process fairly straightforward.

The app has an on-device “AI” auto editor that works with both 360 and regular content, though it tends to be a little swoopy for my tastes with 360 clips (by default, the camera angle moves a lot , though you can adjust it). When it comes to non-360 footage, I’ve gotten better automatic results from Insta360’s app than GoPro’s cloud editor, but in both cases some additional manual tweaking of the results yields better videos overall.

Insta360’s biggest advantage over GoPro Quik is its use of proxy files—lower-resolution duplicate files that allow for fast editing even on older, slower phones. Insta360 then uses the full-resolution files to create the final video. The process is generally smooth—and it’s necessary since videos from the Insta360 X4 and AcePro cameras can be up to 8K resolution, which can bog down even the fastest phones.

  • Editing 360 videos takes some practice. In addition to handling all the normal video editing (cuts, speed, and so on), you also need to determine the direction and movement of the virtual camera. The Insta360 app offers suggestions, but figuring it out yourself is worth the time and effort.
  • Regular photos and videos save to your phone’s gallery automatically, but 360 clips need to be edited in some way first.
  • Once you’ve created your video, which can include non-Insta360 clips and photos, you need to export it. Depending on your phone, this process can take a few minutes, especially at higher resolutions and quality. The same is true of all video-editing apps, though GoPro can do some editing in the cloud and allow you to use your phone for something else.
  • Insta360’s app includes a lot of transitions (stylistic ways to cut between video clips) that other editors like CapCut include only in their expensive paid options. Transitions can make a video far more interesting and professional-looking.

Apple’s iMovie (available only for Apple devices) is extremely user-friendly but basic. That said, if you have an iOS device or a Mac, it’s a great place to start.

Google’s YouTube Create ( Android , iOS later in 2024) occupies the Goldilocks zone, as it’s more elaborate than iMovie but not as complex as CapCut. It offers a relatively quick way to edit a professional-looking video, including picture adjustments, speed adjustments, image and video overlays, music, sound effects, and more—though it does have a bit of a learning curve in comparison with simpler apps.

We also checked out several other popular options, but we didn’t find them better than CapCut, GoPro Quik, or Insta360. For instance, Adobe Premiere Rush ( iOS , Android ) is relatively cumbersome to use and recently removed its useful desktop Premiere Pro syncing feature. Adobe Express ( iOS , Android ) seems more aimed toward brands and marketers than individuals.

There’s no such thing as learning too much about editing. If you decide that you’re serious about it, you can find endless videos and books about the topic. The legendary editor Walter Murch (whose resume includes Apocalypse Now , The Godfather , The Godfather Part II , and The Conversation ) wrote a great one . He’s 81 and still at it.

But here are a few suggestions to keep in mind as you’re getting started:

  • Respect your audience’s time. It was the great bard William Shakespeare who said: “When it comes to editing video, brevity is the soul of wit.” There are lots of ways to edit, but if you’re just starting out, it’s rarely a bad choice to keep things short and to the point.
  • Cut to the beat. When possible, make edits to the beat of your chosen music, as in this brilliant example (video) . Not every beat needs a new shot, but this is a good foundation.
  • Transitions are key. Ideally, when you’re shooting, have some ideas about how to transition from one shot or scene to another. Most of the apps we’ve described above, especially CapCut and Insta360, include stylistic ways to transition between clips that really elevate a video.

Once you start to get the hang of mobile editing apps, consider a move to desktop editing software. These more powerful editing suites offer significantly more creative freedom, so you’ll have an easier time accomplishing more complex and precise edits. Finished videos will render much more quickly, too. Their main downside in comparison with mobile apps is that you’ll need to transfer files back and forth between your phone and computer before posting them online.

One good starter desktop editing suite is DaVinci Resolve , which is free. Other, paid options such as Adobe Premiere Pro and Avid Media Composer can be quite expensive but are more common in the professional world.

Alice Munro’s daughter sees outpouring of messages after essay on mother’s silence to her sexual abuse

https://www.ctvnews.ca/entertainment/alice-munro-s-daughter-sees-outpouring-of-messages-after-essay-on-mother-s-silence-to-her-sexual-abuse-1.6955624 ( CTV Network ) — Warning: The following details may disturb some readers.

Social media saw a flood of messages for Andrea Robin Skinner, daughter of late Canadian author Alice Munro, after an eye-opening personal essay about her sexual abuse by her stepfather published this weekend.

In the essay, published in The Toronto Star on Sunday, Skinner detailed how the Nobel laureate remained in her marriage to husband Gerald Fremlin, even after learning of years of his abuse to Skinner, starting when she was nine years old. Skinner describes writing a letter to Munro detailing the abuse, but receiving no sympathy from her mother, who remained with Fremlin until his death, in 2013.

The information you need to know, sent directly to you: Download the CTV News App

“I … wanted this story, my story, to become part of the stories people tell about my mother,” Skinner wrote. “I never wanted to see another interview, biography or event that didn’t wrestle with the reality of what had happened to me, and with the fact that my mother, confronted with the truth of what had happened, chose to stay with, and protect, my abuser.”

Munro’s Books, founded by the prizewinning short story writer, expressed unequivocal support for Skinner, describing the revelations as “heartbreaking.”

“Along with so many readers and writers, we will need time to absorb this news and the impact it may have on the legacy of Alice Munro, whose work and ties to the store we have previously celebrated,” the statement said. “While the bookstore is inextricably linked with Jim and Alice Munro, we have independently owned since 2014. As such, we are not able to speak on behalf of the Munro family.”

The Victoria bookstore also shared a statement from Skinner’s siblings, Jenny and Sheila, and step-brother, Andrew.

“By acknowledging and honouring Andrea’s truth, and being very clear about their wish to end the legacy of silence, the current store owners have become part of our family’s healing, and are modelling a truly positive response to disclosures like Andrea’s,” the family statement reads.

As Skinner’s story came to light, several writers took to social media to discuss the essay and its impact on the literary world.

Highlighting the segment where Munro told Skinner she had been “told too late” of the abuse “and that “our misogynistic culture was to blame,” writer Beverly Gooden – who created the #WhyIStayed movement to portray the pitfalls of domestic violence – said it caused her to “gasp.”

“It’s not the patriarchy, it’s the you. Good grief,” Gooden wrote in a post on X.

Novelist Lydia Kiesling wrote on how the gravity of Skinner’s revelations impact Munro’s legacy.

“To raise kids & exist you kind of have to pretend the world is not a place where a woman renowned for her depictions of human life could feel sexually competitive with her own child who was assaulted by her husband at age 9 & choose him over her, but it is,” Kiesling wrote on X.

Munro often wrote about the emotional complexities of everyday people.

2019 Pulitzer Prize finalist Rebecca Makkai commented on the “seismic shift” in the collective understanding of the late writer and the difficulties in separating an artist from their work.

“And in a way I can’t explain, it feels like a violation, like we were all in an intimate relationship with work that had a horrid underbelly all along. I want to jump on the pile of her work and somehow magically save it all, assign it to some other writer. But we can’t do that,” Makkai wrote on X.

On the other hand, Joyce Carol Oates, the novelist behind “Black Water,” “What I Lived For” and “Blonde,” expressed her years-long admiration of Munro – sharing her thoughts on the essay despite not reading it.

“This article is behind a pay wall so I have not read it; & if I were to read it, I would probably have no comment. A longtime admirer of Alice Munro & would just want to say that, in her fiction, Munro may have confronted something like this dilemma: a ‘good’ woman seemingly oblivious of a common law husband sexually abusing a child,” the X post reads.

In a follow-up post Oates added it’s “sad” and “shameful,” positing Munro appears to have been “a person of her time & place.” The novelist points to Munro’s work as evidence of that.

“(… Munro) dramatized in her stories: provincial, small-town lives where being married, having a husband however despicable is somehow such a high value, a mother would betray her own daughter. entirely of another era, fortunately not our own except in some quarters in the US in which girls/children are routinely abused by men whom others shield & enable,” Oates wrote.

Many took to social media to applaud Skinner’s courage, including American novelist Brandon Taylor.

“I am so amazed by Andrea Skinner. The courage this took. The strength to actually sit down and write it out. The grace and compassion toward others as well as herself. I’m just grateful to her for this,” the post on X reads.

“Either there’s abuse and the person is a total monster who you could never love, or you love the person and so therefore there can’t really have been abuse,” Montreal-based writer Clementine Morrigan, who’s writing has explored issues of trauma, childhood sexual abuse and incest, told The Canadian Press.

“So what frustrates me so much in our response when we find out that someone who is an important figure or us … either perpetrated abuse or took part by inaction … we actually repeat this pattern.”

Skinner reported the abuse to police in 2005, resulting in Fremlin pleading guilty to a charge of indecent assault.

Biden refuses to say whether he'd take independent cognitive test and make results public

app to make essay

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden insisted Friday he doesn’t need a cognitive or neurological test and appeared to dismiss reports that he has suffered mental lapses.

In a 22-minute interview with George Stephanopoulos of ABC News, Biden refused to say whether he would be willing to take an independent cognitive or neurological exam and release the results to the public.

The job of the presidency and running for re-election are their own sort of cognitive test, he said.

“I have a cognitive test every day,” he said.

Biden did not directly address reports that claimed his mental lapses were increasing. “Can I run 110 flat? No," he said. "But I’m still in good shape.”

The interview was Biden's first with a television network since his disastrous debate with former President Donald Trump last week. During that faceoff, Biden spoke in a raspy voice and at times was unable to complete his thoughts or finish sentences. His performance has raised concerns among some Democrats that he will lose to Trump in November and is not mentally fit to serve another four years in office.

Pressed by Stephanopoulos on whether he would take a cognitive test or neurological assessment to reassure the American people of his ability to serve another term if he were reelected to the White House, Biden said Americans should watch him at work and on the campaign trail.

“So, the answer is no,” Stepanopoulos said.

“I’ve already done it,” Biden responded.
