š How to Write a 200-word Essay
When writing a 200-word essay, it’s essential to carefully choose each word because you have limited space to express your ideas. Creating a clear structure is crucial for this type of writing. In the following paragraphs, we will explore each section of the 200-word essay, offering helpful tips and advice.
Introduction
An engaging opening paragraph is vital when writing a 200-word essay. It should be concise, consisting of around 50 words that capture the essence of your topic. Avoid starting with trivial information, as it leaves little room for crucial details.
The introduction should include the following:
- A hook to captivate readers
- Background information to provide context
- A thesis statement to convey the main idea
While this framework is not obligatory, it can assist you in organizing your thoughts effectively within the limited word count.
The body of a 200-word essay usually consists of 1-2 paragraphs that develop and support the thesis statement. To assist you in this process, we have prepared a mini guide. Follow these steps when writing the main body of your essay:
- Craft a topic sentence . This sentence should reinforce the thesis statement and ensure a seamless transition from the introduction to the body.
- Present the evidence. Including strong evidence will help persuade your reader of your perspective.
- Add a transition sentence. Following the previous steps, guide your reader toward the conclusion smoothly.
The last part of your essay is the conclusion. Even though it is concise, it plays a crucial role in leaving a lasting impression. In a short piece of writing, a detailed recap is unnecessary. Instead, focus on two key elements:
- Restate the core message. Rephrase your thesis statement, reinforcing the main idea of your essay.
- Provide closure. Craft a single sentence that brings your readers to an end, leaving them with a sense of completion.

My long-term goal is to work in one of the best private hospitals in the US. There, I can serve patients while honing my abilities and expanding my expertise in the medical field. Interacting with individuals from diverse backgrounds will boost my confidence and reaffirm my purpose. Nursing encompasses both a profession and a compassionate duty. Your hook should tie into the thesis statement.
ā Write the Essay Body
The essay body is the bulk of the text. This is where you describe your topic and make your arguments. The body is where you discuss the main ideas identified in your outline. Each paragraph in the body introduces one new concept or idea. Donāt forget to give each section an introductory sentence and ensure they serve a purpose.
Explaining the themes and ideas of the essay comes after this introductory sentence. Be sure to back up your claims with credible sources and information. Cite any material you reference or quotes you use according to the assigned essay format.
ā Stick to the Word Count
The desired word count is one of the most essential parts of writing an essay. If your piece comes with a word limit, then make sure that you respect that word count and convey your message in an appropriate number of words. Slight deviations are acceptable, but donāt severely under-write or over-write your essay. Also, avoid repeating information covered in companion pieces, such as a resume. The paper should be brief and written with perfect grammar. Go through the essay and correct grammar and spelling mistakes.
ā Write a Conclusion and Proofread the Essay
Make sure the points of your essay are appropriately organized. Avoid writing too much in the paper, or you risk losing control of the writing. Your essay conclusion summarizes the paper and the main points covered. The conclusion should be no more than five sentences long.
Donāt introduce any new ideas during the closing statements. With that said, you can restate your thesis statement. Some people like to write conclusions by restating the introduction. When finished, go through the paper and correct any mistakes or other issues you find.

How to Write a 200 Word Short Essay
By: Tasha Kolesnikova
Writing a decent 200-word essay while in college can be quite challenging, especially if you don't feel inspired or canāt collect your thoughts. But don't worry - with the right approach to choosing ideas, preparing a draft, and then editing it, you will be able to write your own short story successfully.
Step 1 - Makeready
Step 2 - create an outline, step 3 - decide on your essay writing style, points to note, step 5 - editing, how long is a 200 word essay, thesis statement, opening sentences, supporting phrases, concluding section, how do you make the text shorter, what shouldn't you do.
The essay should start with an introduction, in which you need to identify the key points to attract the reader. These are the points of view that you will consider in the central part. If you want to learn how to write college essays, follow these guidelines.
- Positive environment
You must be ready to write. This is the first step in writing an essay quickly. It is vital to make sure that nothing distracts you and that you have everything you need (paper, computer) close at hand. Create the right environment. If you prefer to work in silence, it's best to head to the library. If you need background noise, turn on music, or work in a cafe.
- Choice of theme
For a successful essay, you need to have a clear idea of it, so it is essential to decide on the topic. It's easiest to write about what interests you, so try to choose something that will pique your curiosity (if you have a choice). Your teacher can ask you a topic or allow you to pick it yourself. For a 200-word essay, it is crucial to choose a narrow topic to have time to consider it.
- Collect materials
Working on the text may require the study of additional materials. Use the library, or search for information on the Internet.
If your teacher has given you specific instructions for writing your essay, you should be sure to follow all recommendations.
- Start with a thesis statement. Formulate the main idea in one sentence. You will embark on it. Think about who will be reading you (and what kind of explanation is needed), what needs to be mentioned first, and why the topic interests you.
- You need to arm yourself with a notebook and a pen. You can use brainstorming. Write down all your thoughts in free form. Write whatever comes to mind. Don't think about what it looks like. Make sketches to shape them later.
Prompt: To capture your primary thoughts, try to limit yourself to time. For example, mark 5-10 minutes, and write without stopping. This will help you concentrate on your writing.
- A diagram can help you. Place your main idea in the center of the page, and circle it. There may be a thesis statement. At this stage, it is important to highlight the central theme.
Prompt: Place related subtopics around the main topic. Try to draw at least 5-6 circles. Next to the subtopics, write down any associations you have. You will begin to notice the connections between topics and connect them with lines. This will create a kind of web, and you will be able to understand how your main ideas echo and what follows from this or that thought.
- Rewrite your thoughts in a more explicit form - they should be deep and complete. Work your text and paragraph order carefully. What information should be communicated to the reader first? In what order should you place the paragraphs for the most convincing text?
Prompt: Often, a short text is the result of a quick jump to the main ideas without introductions and explanations that would prepare the reader.
It is essential for writing a good essay. The style should match your theme. In order to convince the reader of the correctness of your research, it is not necessary to use expressive vocabulary. At the same time, we do not advise you to drop down to everyday speech; otherwise, you risk looking unprofessional. Although, if you are writing about personal matters, you can use more informal vocabulary.
The attitude towards what you write about is expressed in the essay writing style. It can be very different: neutral or enthusiastic, naive or skeptical, suspicious, or humorous. The main thing is that the writing style matches what you write about.
For example, if you are writing a serious essay about laboratory research, your writing style should be neutral and as objective as possible. Avoid making any judgments. But if you're thinking about dating on social media, use a more fluent style.
Step 4 - Composition
So, the preparatory stage has passed. You have understood your thoughts, arranged them, and are ready to write the essay's text.
- Write the main part. This step is done fairly quickly if you have a plan. In our case, the main body usually contains one paragraph. It should support your claim. This part must include a supporting example. This is where you need to find the best arguments for your thesis. You need to keep within 3-5 sentences, which is about 100-120 words.
- Now it will be much easier for you to write the introduction and the ending part. The introduction should become a reference point and be able to interest the reader in reading the entire work. The optimal number of sentences in the introduction is three. The first sentence grabs attention, serves as a pledge for the reader. In the second sentence, place words of support for the first one, and smoothly move to the thesis statement. The introductory paragraph can take approximately 60-70 words.
- The conclusion ends the essay by reminding the reader of your reasons and their importance. Support the main idea, summarize what was said, and complete your text on an upbeat note. It can take two to three sentences, 40-50 words long.
- It is worth noting that if the professor set you the task of writing a 200-word essay, this does not mean that there really should be exactly 200 words. If, in order to fully present your thought, you need a little more or fewer words, you can slightly deviate restrictions - within about 20 words.
- The first sentence should interest and attract attention. So work on it. You can start with a showcase or a quote mark.
- The language should be direct and concise. Don't write pompously. Make natural statements that are easy to apprehend. Don't use a whole phrase where you can leave one word. Use words that the reader understands. There is no point in artificially decorating an essay, relying on synonyms, because your arguments should be understandable.
- You can make it easier to write an essay - just use a ready-made essay example . There will be a proposal template of 200-word work in front of you, with a well-developed format, style, and structure.
- Donāt forget about the headline. The title should be brief but concise. It specifies the topic and should be simple and straightforward. It is essential to continually remember the headline during editing because good ideas are often born when reading the text.
Despite the small number of words in the essay, you can make a large number of mistakes. Therefore, at this stage, it is very important to check everything thoroughly.
- Get distracted. Correct carefully, then reread the text again. Before doing this, your brain needs to rest. Clear your mind so that you can reasonably objectively evaluate your text during the editing process. It will be easier for you to spot mistakes with a fresh mind. Be sure to take a break from your work for at least a couple of minutes.
- Use modern technology. Of course, you will definitely reread your essay to find and correct mistakes. But don't be afraid to use the spell checker. You just need to remember that after that, the paper should be re-read, since the program checks only the form, but not the content.
- Read aloud. This may sound strange to you, but try reading your essay out loud. You can also ask a friend for help - let him listen to your text. This will help identify possible problems.
- "Polish" the composition. Re-read the text again, get rid of all unnecessary things. The excellent editorial revision will help you focus on the key messages that need to be highlighted in the text.
Also, editing will give the work a professional look, logical structure, and organization. Are all ideas clearly expressed? Are the transitions read without a hitch? Have you fixed all the mistakes? And with all of this, you all fit within 200 words? If you are satisfied, then your work is completed!
When you are given the task to write this type of essay, you have already been limited to the word count - up to 200. We will try to orient you in more detail, what size of the text you need to follow.
We can talk about the length of the essay in two parameters:
- the number of paragraphs;
- the number of pages
No matter how many words an essay has, it should have a standard structure. That is, the text should consist of an introduction, central part, and conclusions. You can divide the main part into two or three paragraphs. So if you are interested in the number of paragraphs in such an essay, we can talk about three to five ones. It depends on the writing style and length of the sentences you choose.
The quantity of pages depends on several factors. This is the font size and the selected spacing. It is also important whether the work is handwritten or printed. Of course, a printed essay will take up much less space than a handwritten one. Basically, the printed text will be placed on about half or 2/3 of the page.
Basic Elements of a Short Essay
There are some elements that you cannot do without when writing a short essay.
The thesis is the main statement around which your entire text is built. It should be controversial, complex, and specific; it should combine your composition's whole essence in one phrase.
If you have correctly formulated the thesis, you will have a lot of material for the essay, since the idea is usually challenging to substantiate.
An interesting thesis on a topic that can cause questions and controversy will make it easier for you to write an essay. If you lack in volume, revise your thesis by making it narrower and more complex.
A 200-word essay thesis should be precise and narrow.
- For example, when writing an essay on universities' sports life, a weak thesis will look like this: "The sports life of universities is very controversial." It's too blurry to tell your position. The reader may not understand what you are trying to prove.
- Here is an example of a strong thesis for the same topic: "University athletes should receive monetary rewards." So you state the subject in question. It is narrow enough for you to see in two pages.
Prompt: Imagine the thesis is a tabletop. Your essay should support it because, without this support, the table will turn into a pile of rubble. Key arguments, rationales, and references to other people's statements are the legs that hold your essay in place so that it takes shape.
The main thing you need to remember is that each paragraph of your essay should start with a thematic phrase. This is one opening sentence, the primary and most important argument you will develop in the paragraph.
Many teachers insist that a five-paragraph structure is an optimal form for presenting an essay.
This structure implies at least three reasons and usually looks like this:
- Introduction, description of the topic, a summary of their ideas, thesis.
- A paragraph describing the first argument.
- A paragraph describing the second argument.
- A paragraph describing the third argument.
- A short conclusion summarizing everything that has been said.
Since we are talking about a 200-word essay, you can limit yourself to 3 paragraphs. In this case, the diagram will look like this:
- A paragraph describing the argument.
- A short conclusion that summarizes everything that has been said.
After the introductory sentence, there should be a supporting example in every paragraph. Do not use long, complex constructions in short essays ; argue your thoughts clearly and specifically.
The conclusion should tie all the threads of the argument together. In some cases ( persuasive essay topics ), you can include a call to action. You can also go back to the opening sequence or example in the introduction to keep your work perfectly symmetrical.
It is also essential to make sure that you support the central thesis with clear and well-reasoned arguments.
200 Word Essay Writing: Useful Information
The structure of the essay, the style, your opinion on a particular issue, and your vocabulary's richness are important. Each of these factors will affect the final result of evaluating your essay. But what if you've followed all of these rules, but haven't met the word count? This is the next part of our article.
Eliminating Extra Details
Brevity is the soul of a talented writer. Writing succinctly forms a pleasant first impression of talent. Moreover, brevity should not conflict with information richness and actual presentation.
We agree that putting all your thoughts in 200 words is a real challenge for many students. But it is vital to learn how to eliminate unnecessary things, cut like a knife.
- Let the text rest.
Very often, what seems to you to be an essential part of the content when writing loses its charm a couple of days later, and you can see what is in the text gist and what is a husk.
- Down with all the introductory and uncertain words.
All this āin general,ā āit seems,ā āprobably,ā is most often verbal rubbish, which gives nothing to the content but adds volume to the text. Go through your text carefully and cross out unnecessary words. Most likely, the text will not lose anything in meaning but will gain in the narrative's density and clarity.
Heaped up complex sentences, and even with complicating elements, are also a path to lengthening. They confuse both the author and the reader; they often create unnecessary volume as well. Rebuild your complex in 2 simple ones - and you will see that the text is reduced.
- Focus on the essentials.
Take a fresh look at your text. And try to identify the most critical thoughts as objectively as possible. Now delete everything else. Get rid of even those parts of the document that you think are well written. You just have to connect the main sentences literally. This is one of the best ways to keep your essay concise.
- Sort out your text.
Read your text meticulously - is everything you said related to the main point? Are there unnecessary "lyrical digressions" and thoughts "about something else"? If this is present, cross out the excess.
- Don't take difficult essay topics. Don't try to demonstrate that you understand a complicated idea when you really don't.
- Don't use conventional clichƩs: they show that you cannot express ideas on your own.

Writing an Effective 200-Word Essay: 6 Tips
Table of Contents
A 200-word essay should convey an idea or message that is brief and easy to follow. The topic sentence should be concise.
You must be able to convey your thoughts within the given space effectively . Each point should make sense and keep your readers engaged.
This article answers the question āhow long is a 200-word essay ā.
Some students have difficulty writing longer essays and writing enough words to achieve the required word count. However, others must write shorter ones.
It is quite challenging to write essays of 200 words as it requires conveying complex messages in four to five short paragraphs.
Any essay aims to get readers hooked and engaged in the topic. Your writing must create a reaction from the readers and provide a view of the major ideas and arguments. The following tips will guide you through the process of writing an excellent essay.
1. Select a compelling topic
Select a topic that you are most comfortable with that interests you. Choose an area of expertise or something that you can relate to.
Ultimately, it doesnāt matter if youāre very knowledgeable about the topic chosen, but it must be something you feel passionate about.
You want to select a topic that will keep readers interested, so check out your topic from many angles. If youāre interested in the topic, it will be easy to determine good resources.
2. Research
Once youāve chosen a good topic, you should explore it a little to ensure you have relevant statistics and facts.
This will facilitate your work and increase your chances of being credible. Spend some time researching the subject. Itās a good idea to ensure that you have in-depth knowledge of this topic to present it.
Look for the appropriate keywords and make the most out of relevant information for your essay.
3. Stay focused on the topic.
You want to focus on your topic, and take a deeper approach to it. Narrow your focus by outlining your thesis.
A well-written essay should have a thesis statement that informs the reader about what to expect. It can be the bridge to your paper and give the reader a focus on the topic.
Stick to the thesis; do not mention unnecessary points in the essay.
4. Follow an outline.
An outline can serve as a road map to help guide you through your writing. Once you have an idea of which points you want to make in your essay, itās best to begin writing your outline.
You can write a separate outline for each paragraph or stick with one general outline that works for the whole essay.
5. Create a Structure
Donāt jump into writing an essay blindly without understanding what the paper is supposed to do. Even if the document is 200 words, it needs a compelling structure, as with any other essay.
Create a structure for your essay, and make sure each paragraph is tightly focused on a particular point within the overarching theme. A good structure will ensure a clear, concise message.
Think of the structure as a roadmap. Each sectionās primary goal/purpose is to lead readers to a solid central idea.
An introduction, a body, and a conclusion are important sections for your essay. The introduction should provide the reader with a sense of purpose. Give a brief description of the main ideas and points to be discussed.
The body should discuss the ideas and points of the essay in detail. Discuss each concept in a separate paragraph. The conclusion should summarize what you have discussed in the paper.
6. Write briefly with concision
Use straightforward language that is efficient. Concision will help avoid confusion of the reader as they will follow the logic of your writing without getting lost.
Remember to stick to the required word count. Your text can be effective even with fewer words. Try not to repeat the points you have stated previously. Donāt write too much in the paper, otherwise you risk losing control of the writing.
Type of font used, font size, spacing, margins on paper and paragraph length will determine the number of pages an essay will occupy.
A 200-word essay is a short essay that would usually occupy 3-5 paragraphs. It will mostly contain less than 1 page of typed work. Generally, the number of pages will vary slightly based on your text processing software and settings.
Still, you can expect similar results with conventional page margins and a 12-point Arial or Times New Roman font.
When writing your essay, focus on making a solid argument about the subject. A 200-word essay might be short, but you can create a compelling piece with the right words and vocabulary.
The tips highlighted in this article will help you achieve an effective essay while maintaining the required word count.

200 Word Essay : Writing Tips
Writing an essay in 200 words brings a lot of challenges, given there are several factors to consider. To be able to explain a complex topic in such a restricted word limit, you must follow a few key tips, which are as follows:
- Brainstorm Ideas
Go through the essay prompts again to better understand the topic. Before you start writing, properly understand what your instructor has asked you to do. Avoid writing as of now if you still have a few doubts. Even if the paper demands 200 words, you need to add an engaging structure like any other type of essay. Incorporate all the additional essay writing fundamentals that you are aware of. Every paragraph should begin with catchy opening sentences and fresh ideas.
- Select a Suitable Topic
Selecting a topic you are familiar with is key to securing top grades in short essay writing. Plan your research paper on a topic that you like or that is very important to you. This is key to producing a relevant and authentic piece of writing. Your writing shows how knowledgeable you are about the topic at hand. An error-free paper increases the odds of accomplishing your goal, such as earning a scholarship.
- Conduct Research
Put both effort and time to research the subject. Then, try to grasp the topic at hand. By doing so, you can gather valuable information, which you can incorporate into your essay to boost its overall quality. A research paper essay backed up with figures and facts will definitely allow you to achive excellent grades.
- Give Yourself Enough Time
When it comes to writing an essay, be sure to take some time and think about the prompt. Create a draft and proofread it to come up with an engaging and accurate paper. Well-written essays and personal statements will make you stand out and increase your chances of success.
You don’t have enough scope to play with for an essay of 200 words. So, you must keep paragraphs short and avoid using complex sentences or terms. Stick to simple and concise language to convey your message effectively.
- Add a Thesis Statement
This statement covers the main idea of your 200 word essay, allowing readers to understand what is expected from the write-up. After creating the paper outline, you can come up with a crisp, two-sentence statement. The thesis should introduce the purpose of the essay, and to make it right, you need to have an outline in mind. Furthermore, thanks to this statement, you have something to go back to when composing the essay.
- Write the Introductory Sentence
After you have completed the thesis and main body of the essay, itās time to craft a catchy introduction. This section of your essay draws the readers’ attention and urges them to continue reading. A complex opening sentence discourages readers and conveys the wrong message. Add an appealing story, summary, revelation, quote, or other hooks to begin your paper and mention the topic phrase. Make sure your hook relates to the thesis statement.
- Write Body Paragraphs
The body paragraph will take about half a page. This is the section where you explain the topic you have selected and post arguments. The body lets you discuss the main points identified in your outline. Each body paragraph introduces one new idea or concept. Remember to add introductory sentences to each section and make sure they serve a purpose.
Describing the ideas and themes of the essay comes after the introductory paragraph. Make sure to support your arguments using credible information sources. Cite references or quotes you use as per the allocated essay format.
- Stick to the Word Limit
Meeting world count is one of the main parts of writing an essay. No matter how many pages or sentences you write, if there is an allocated word count specified in your brief, make sure you follow it to convey your message effectively. Exceptions are allowed, but don’t excessively under or overwrite your essay. Don’t repeat information that has already been covered in supporting phrases, such as a resume. The essay must be written concisely and with perfect grammar. Check the essay for grammatical and spelling errors.
- Write a Conclusion and ReviseĀ
Ensure all the points in your essay are arranged properly. Avoid excessive writing, or you risk controlling your paper. The concluding paragraph summarizes the paper and the main points covered. The conclusion of your essay should be no more than five sentences.
Avoid introducing new stuff while writing the closing sentences. But you can restate the thesis. Some restate the introductory paragraph in this section as well. Avoid doing that. When completed, review the paper to ensure there are no errors or issues.

Each new paragraph should contain a topic phrase. Write down the topic sentences from different angles and pick the most convincing argument to create relevant opening sentences in a 200 word essay.
Supporting phrases
When writing an essay that’s short, it’s important to ensure that each paragraph has supporting evidence that supports the main idea. To make room, do not use complex words or sentences that are too long. Discard quotes that are not beneficial to the original text.
In the conclusion, address the thesis statement and give a synopsis of the work.
How many paragraphs is 200 words?

How Is Technology Influencing Modern Education
The use of technology in education has changed traditional ways of teaching and learning in the modern era, bringing with it both opportunities and challenges. This essay examines the ways in which technology affects modern education, highlighting both its advantages and possible disadvantages.
Education has changed a lot because of technological advancements, which have made learning and educational resources more accessible than ever. Interactive tools and digital platforms are the reasons students can experience tailored and engaging learning. They also help fulfil the requirements of different learning styles. For example, e-learning modules and virtual simulations help students understand tricky topics better than traditional textbooks. Technology also overcomes geographical barriers, allowing students and teachers to collaborate globally and participate in remote learning.
However, this effective communication brings a few difficulties. The gap in access to modern information and communication technology, known as the “digital divide,” can create severe disparities in education. Furthermore, excessive screen time and dependency on digital devices raise concerns regarding children’s physical health and social skill development.
In conclusion, even if technology boosts educational prospects, it is important to address the issues that come with it. Easy access and a balance between technological use and traditional teaching methods are key to making the most of technology.

State the Meaning of Friendship
The cornerstone of the human experience is friendship, a bond that dates back to the dawn of civilization. It cuts over boundaries of age, colour, and belief system as it is based on respect, understanding, and support for one another. The true meaning of friendship is found in the deep understanding and connection that people have with one another, not in superficial interactions.
Mutual respect is the core of friendship. Respect involves deeply understanding each other’s personality and values, as well as respecting each other’s rights and emotions. It’s a two-way street where everyone respects the opinions of the other, fostering an environment that is safe for open and frank conversation.
Empathy, or the ability to sense and experience another person’s feelings, is equally significant. Empathetic friends can read each other’s secret emotions and offer consolation without passing judgment. This emotional connection not only strengthens the relationship but also fosters a sense of safety and belonging.
To sum up, true friendship is a priceless and enriching factor in our lives. It shapes our opinions, fosters growth, and offers satisfaction along the way. Because of this, our pleasure depends on developing and appreciating these relationships.

The Power of Music to Unite Cultures
Due to its inherent capacity to transcend cultural boundaries, music is essential for bringing different cultures together. Examining music’s contribution to intercultural communication and its universally felt emotional impact will strengthen this claim.
Music promotes cross-cultural exchange by introducing listeners to other cultural traditions. Examples of genres that have become globally popular are jazz and reggae, which have their roots in African and Caribbean cultures and have fostered an awareness of different cultural heritages. People from different backgrounds have the opportunity to share an experience and learn from this exposure.
Moreover, music’s emotional effect is universal. It evokes similar emotions in people from all cultural backgrounds. A melody has the power to unite people from different cultural backgrounds by evoking feelings of happiness or sorrow. This common emotional experience promotes understanding and empathy, which strengthens unity among cultures.
In conclusion, music is an effective medium for bringing different societies together because it can eliminate cultural borders and trigger common feelings. Since music is a universal language, it is essential for fostering cultural unity and mutual respect. Despite our differences, we all experience the same emotions in reaction to musical rhythms and melodies.
What elements should be included in the introduction of a 200 word essay?

College Essays
If you grow up to be a professional writer, everything you write will first go through an editor before being published. This is because the process of writing is really a process of re-writing āof rethinking and reexamining your work, usually with the help of someone else. So what does this mean for your student writing? And in particular, what does it mean for very important, but nonprofessional writing like your college essay? Should you ask your parents to look at your essay? Pay for an essay service?
If you are wondering what kind of help you can, and should, get with your personal statement, you've come to the right place! In this article, I'll talk about what kind of writing help is useful, ethical, and even expected for your college admission essay . I'll also point out who would make a good editor, what the differences between editing and proofreading are, what to expect from a good editor, and how to spot and stay away from a bad one.

Advice for editors.
Should You Pay Money For Essay Editing?
The Bottom Line
What's next, what kind of help with your essay can you get.
Rather than talking in general terms about "help," let's first clarify the two different ways that someone else can improve your writing . There is editing, which is the more intensive kind of assistance that you can use throughout the whole process. And then there's proofreading, which is the last step of really polishing your final product.
Let me go into some more detail about editing and proofreading, and then explain how good editors and proofreaders can help you."
Editing is helping the author (in this case, you) go from a rough draft to a finished work . Editing is the process of asking questions about what you're saying, how you're saying it, and how you're organizing your ideas. But not all editing is good editing . In fact, it's very easy for an editor to cross the line from supportive to overbearing and over-involved.
Ability to clarify assignments. A good editor is usually a good writer, and certainly has to be a good reader. For example, in this case, a good editor should make sure you understand the actual essay prompt you're supposed to be answering.
Open-endedness. Good editing is all about asking questions about your ideas and work, but without providing answers. It's about letting you stick to your story and message, and doesn't alter your point of view.
Think of an editor as a great travel guide. It can show you the many different places your trip could take you. It should explain any parts of the trip that could derail your trip or confuse the traveler. But it never dictates your path, never forces you to go somewhere you don't want to go, and never ignores your interests so that the trip no longer seems like it's your own. So what should good editors do?
Help Brainstorm Topics
Sometimes it's easier to bounce thoughts off of someone else. This doesn't mean that your editor gets to come up with ideas, but they can certainly respond to the various topic options you've come up with. This way, you're less likely to write about the most boring of your ideas, or to write about something that isn't actually important to you.
If you're wondering how to come up with options for your editor to consider, check out our guide to brainstorming topics for your college essay .
Help Revise Your Drafts
Here, your editor can't upset the delicate balance of not intervening too much or too little. It's tricky, but a great way to think about it is to remember: editing is about asking questions, not giving answers .
Revision questions should point out:
- Places where more detail or more description would help the reader connect with your essay
- Places where structure and logic don't flow, losing the reader's attention
- Places where there aren't transitions between paragraphs, confusing the reader
- Moments where your narrative or the arguments you're making are unclear
But pointing to potential problems is not the same as actually rewritingāeditors let authors fix the problems themselves.
Bad editing is usually very heavy-handed editing. Instead of helping you find your best voice and ideas, a bad editor changes your writing into their own vision.
You may be dealing with a bad editor if they:
- Add material (examples, descriptions) that doesn't come from you
- Use a thesaurus to make your college essay sound "more mature"
- Add meaning or insight to the essay that doesn't come from you
- Tell you what to say and how to say it
- Write sentences, phrases, and paragraphs for you
- Change your voice in the essay so it no longer sounds like it was written by a teenager
Colleges can tell the difference between a 17-year-old's writing and a 50-year-old's writing. Not only that, they have access to your SAT or ACT Writing section, so they can compare your essay to something else you wrote. Writing that's a little more polished is great and expected. But a totally different voice and style will raise questions.
Where's the Line Between Helpful Editing and Unethical Over-Editing?
Sometimes it's hard to tell whether your college essay editor is doing the right thing. Here are some guidelines for staying on the ethical side of the line.
- An editor should say that the opening paragraph is kind of boring, and explain what exactly is making it drag. But it's overstepping for an editor to tell you exactly how to change it.
- An editor should point out where your prose is unclear or vague. But it's completely inappropriate for the editor to rewrite that section of your essay.
- An editor should let you know that a section is light on detail or description. But giving you similes and metaphors to beef up that description is a no-go.
Proofreading (also called copy-editing) is checking for errors in the last draft of a written work. It happens at the end of the process and is meant as the final polishing touch. Proofreading is meticulous and detail-oriented, focusing on small corrections. It sands off all the surface rough spots that could alienate the reader.
Because proofreading is usually concerned with making fixes on the word or sentence level, this is the only process where someone else can actually add to or take away things from your essay . This is because what they are adding or taking away tends to be one or two misplaced letters.
Laser focus. Proofreading is all about the tiny details, so the ability to really concentrate on finding small slip-ups is a must.
Excellent grammar and spelling skills. Proofreaders need to dot every "i" and cross every "t." Good proofreaders should correct spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar. They should put foreign words in italics and surround quotations with quotation marks. They should check that you used the correct college's name, and that you adhered to any formatting requirements (name and date at the top of the page, uniform font and size, uniform spacing).
Limited interference. A proofreader needs to make sure that you followed any word limits. But if cuts need to be made to shorten the essay, that's your job and not the proofreader's.
A bad proofreader either tries to turn into an editor, or just lacks the skills and knowledge necessary to do the job.
Some signs that you're working with a bad proofreader are:
- If they suggest making major changes to the final draft of your essay. Proofreading happens when editing is already finished.
- If they aren't particularly good at spelling, or don't know grammar, or aren't detail-oriented enough to find someone else's small mistakes.
- If they start swapping out your words for fancier-sounding synonyms, or changing the voice and sound of your essay in other ways. A proofreader is there to check for errors, not to take the 17-year-old out of your writing.
What Do Colleges Think of Your Getting Help With Your Essay?
Admissions officers agree: light editing and proofreading are goodāeven required ! But they also want to make sure you're the one doing the work on your essay. They want essays with stories, voice, and themes that come from you. They want to see work that reflects your actual writing ability, and that focuses on what you find important.
On the Importance of Editing
Get feedback. Have a fresh pair of eyes give you some feedback. Don't allow someone else to rewrite your essay, but do take advantage of others' edits and opinions when they seem helpful. ( Bates College )
Read your essay aloud to someone. Reading the essay out loud offers a chance to hear how your essay sounds outside your head. This exercise reveals flaws in the essay's flow, highlights grammatical errors and helps you ensure that you are communicating the exact message you intended. ( Dickinson College )
On the Value of Proofreading
Share your essays with at least one or two people who know you wellāsuch as a parent, teacher, counselor, or friendāand ask for feedback. Remember that you ultimately have control over your essays, and your essays should retain your own voice, but others may be able to catch mistakes that you missed and help suggest areas to cut if you are over the word limit. ( Yale University )
Proofread and then ask someone else to proofread for you. Although we want substance, we also want to be able to see that you can write a paper for our professors and avoid careless mistakes that would drive them crazy. ( Oberlin College )
On Watching Out for Too Much Outside Influence
Limit the number of people who review your essay. Too much input usually means your voice is lost in the writing style. ( Carleton College )
Ask for input (but not too much). Your parents, friends, guidance counselors, coaches, and teachers are great people to bounce ideas off of for your essay. They know how unique and spectacular you are, and they can help you decide how to articulate it. Keep in mind, however, that a 45-year-old lawyer writes quite differently from an 18-year-old student, so if your dad ends up writing the bulk of your essay, we're probably going to notice. ( Vanderbilt University )
Now let's talk about some potential people to approach for your college essay editing and proofreading needs. It's best to start close to home and slowly expand outward. Not only are your family and friends more invested in your success than strangers, but they also have a better handle on your interests and personality. This knowledge is key for judging whether your essay is expressing your true self.
Parents or Close Relatives
Your family may be full of potentially excellent editors! Parents are deeply committed to your well-being, and family members know you and your life well enough to offer details or incidents that can be included in your essay. On the other hand, the rewriting process necessarily involves criticism, which is sometimes hard to hear from someone very close to you.
A parent or close family member is a great choice for an editor if you can answer "yes" to the following questions. Is your parent or close relative a good writer or reader? Do you have a relationship where editing your essay won't create conflict? Are you able to constructively listen to criticism and suggestion from the parent?
One suggestion for defusing face-to-face discussions is to try working on the essay over email. Send your parent a draft, have them write you back some comments, and then you can pick which of their suggestions you want to use and which to discard.
Teachers or Tutors
A humanities teacher that you have a good relationship with is a great choice. I am purposefully saying humanities, and not just English, because teachers of Philosophy, History, Anthropology, and any other classes where you do a lot of writing, are all used to reviewing student work.
Moreover, any teacher or tutor that has been working with you for some time, knows you very well and can vet the essay to make sure it "sounds like you."
If your teacher or tutor has some experience with what college essays are supposed to be like, ask them to be your editor. If not, then ask whether they have time to proofread your final draft.
Guidance or College Counselor at Your School
The best thing about asking your counselor to edit your work is that this is their job. This means that they have a very good sense of what colleges are looking for in an application essay.
At the same time, school counselors tend to have relationships with admissions officers in many colleges, which again gives them insight into what works and which college is focused on what aspect of the application.
Unfortunately, in many schools the guidance counselor tends to be way overextended. If your ratio is 300 students to 1 college counselor, you're unlikely to get that person's undivided attention and focus. It is still useful to ask them for general advice about your potential topics, but don't expect them to be able to stay with your essay from first draft to final version.
Friends, Siblings, or Classmates
Although they most likely don't have much experience with what colleges are hoping to see, your peers are excellent sources for checking that your essay is you .
Friends and siblings are perfect for the read-aloud edit. Read your essay to them so they can listen for words and phrases that are stilted, pompous, or phrases that just don't sound like you.
You can even trade essays and give helpful advice on each other's work.
If your editor hasn't worked with college admissions essays very much, no worries! Any astute and attentive reader can still greatly help with your process. But, as in all things, beginners do better with some preparation.
First, your editor should read our advice about how to write a college essay introduction , how to spot and fix a bad college essay , and get a sense of what other students have written by going through some admissions essays that worked .
Then, as they read your essay, they can work through the following series of questions that will help them to guide you.
Introduction Questions
- Is the first sentence a killer opening line? Why or why not?
- Does the introduction hook the reader? Does it have a colorful, detailed, and interesting narrative? Or does it propose a compelling or surprising idea?
- Can you feel the author's voice in the introduction, or is the tone dry, dull, or overly formal? Show the places where the voice comes through.
Essay Body Questions
- Does the essay have a through-line? Is it built around a central argument, thought, idea, or focus? Can you put this idea into your own words?
- How is the essay organized? By logical progression? Chronologically? Do you feel order when you read it, or are there moments where you are confused or lose the thread of the essay?
- Does the essay have both narratives about the author's life and explanations and insight into what these stories reveal about the author's character, personality, goals, or dreams? If not, which is missing?
- Does the essay flow? Are there smooth transitions/clever links between paragraphs? Between the narrative and moments of insight?
Reader Response Questions
- Does the writer's personality come through? Do we know what the speaker cares about? Do we get a sense of "who he or she is"?
- Where did you feel most connected to the essay? Which parts of the essay gave you a "you are there" sensation by invoking your senses? What moments could you picture in your head well?
- Where are the details and examples vague and not specific enough?
- Did you get an "a-ha!" feeling anywhere in the essay? Is there a moment of insight that connected all the dots for you? Is there a good reveal or "twist" anywhere in the essay?
- What are the strengths of this essay? What needs the most improvement?
Should You Pay Money for Essay Editing?
One alternative to asking someone you know to help you with your college essay is the paid editor route. There are two different ways to pay for essay help: a private essay coach or a less personal editing service , like the many proliferating on the internet.
My advice is to think of these options as a last resort rather than your go-to first choice. I'll first go through the reasons why. Then, if you do decide to go with a paid editor, I'll help you decide between a coach and a service.
When to Consider a Paid Editor
In general, I think hiring someone to work on your essay makes a lot of sense if none of the people I discussed above are a possibility for you.
If you can't ask your parents. For example, if your parents aren't good writers, or if English isn't their first language. Or if you think getting your parents to help is going create unnecessary extra conflict in your relationship with them (applying to college is stressful as it is!)
If you can't ask your teacher or tutor. Maybe you don't have a trusted teacher or tutor that has time to look over your essay with focus. Or, for instance, your favorite humanities teacher has very limited experience with college essays and so won't know what admissions officers want to see.
If you can't ask your guidance counselor. This could be because your guidance counselor is way overwhelmed with other students.
If you can't share your essay with those who know you. It might be that your essay is on a very personal topic that you're unwilling to share with parents, teachers, or peers. Just make sure it doesn't fall into one of the bad-idea topics in our article on bad college essays .
If the cost isn't a consideration. Many of these services are quite expensive, and private coaches even more so. If you have finite resources, I'd say that hiring an SAT or ACT tutor (whether it's PrepScholar or someone else) is better way to spend your money . This is because there's no guarantee that a slightly better essay will sufficiently elevate the rest of your application, but a significantly higher SAT score will definitely raise your applicant profile much more.
Should You Hire an Essay Coach?
On the plus side, essay coaches have read dozens or even hundreds of college essays, so they have experience with the format. Also, because you'll be working closely with a specific person, it's more personal than sending your essay to a service, which will know even less about you.
But, on the minus side, you'll still be bouncing ideas off of someone who doesn't know that much about you . In general, if you can adequately get the help from someone you know, there is no advantage to paying someone to help you.
If you do decide to hire a coach, ask your school counselor, or older students that have used the service for recommendations. If you can't afford the coach's fees, ask whether they can work on a sliding scale āmany do. And finally, beware those who guarantee admission to your school of choiceāessay coaches don't have any special magic that can back up those promises.
Should You Send Your Essay to a Service?
On the plus side, essay editing services provide a similar product to essay coaches, and they cost significantly less . If you have some assurance that you'll be working with a good editor, the lack of face-to-face interaction won't prevent great results.
On the minus side, however, it can be difficult to gauge the quality of the service before working with them . If they are churning through many application essays without getting to know the students they are helping, you could end up with an over-edited essay that sounds just like everyone else's. In the worst case scenario, an unscrupulous service could send you back a plagiarized essay.
Getting recommendations from friends or a school counselor for reputable services is key to avoiding heavy-handed editing that writes essays for you or does too much to change your essay. Including a badly-edited essay like this in your application could cause problems if there are inconsistencies. For example, in interviews it might be clear you didn't write the essay, or the skill of the essay might not be reflected in your schoolwork and test scores.
Should You Buy an Essay Written by Someone Else?
Let me elaborate. There are super sketchy places on the internet where you can simply buy a pre-written essay. Don't do this!
For one thing, you'll be lying on an official, signed document. All college applications make you sign a statement saying something like this:
I certify that all information submitted in the admission processāincluding the application, the personal essay, any supplements, and any other supporting materialsāis my own work, factually true, and honestly presented... I understand that I may be subject to a range of possible disciplinary actions, including admission revocation, expulsion, or revocation of course credit, grades, and degree, should the information I have certified be false. (From the Common Application )
For another thing, if your academic record doesn't match the essay's quality, the admissions officer will start thinking your whole application is riddled with lies.
Admission officers have full access to your writing portion of the SAT or ACT so that they can compare work that was done in proctored conditions with that done at home. They can tell if these were written by different people. Not only that, but there are now a number of search engines that faculty and admission officers can use to see if an essay contains strings of words that have appeared in other essaysāyou have no guarantee that the essay you bought wasn't also bought by 50 other students.
- You should get college essay help with both editing and proofreading
- A good editor will ask questions about your idea, logic, and structure, and will point out places where clarity is needed
- A good editor will absolutely not answer these questions, give you their own ideas, or write the essay or parts of the essay for you
- A good proofreader will find typos and check your formatting
- All of them agree that getting light editing and proofreading is necessary
- Parents, teachers, guidance or college counselor, and peers or siblings
- If you can't ask any of those, you can pay for college essay help, but watch out for services or coaches who over-edit you work
- Don't buy a pre-written essay! Colleges can tell, and it'll make your whole application sound false.

How to write a 2000-word Essay: What works Best?
Writing a remarkable 2000-word essay is an overwhelming task for students. This type of essay requires an overwhelming amount of knowledge, time to write, and the ability to organize your thoughts concisely. This guide will explain everything you need to complete a 2000-word essay.
How long is a 2000-word essay?
In academic writing, a 2000-word essay is the same as four pages of a single-spaced document or eight pages double-spaced one . Double spacing means there should be blank lines between each line of text that prevent them from blurring together. Your instructor may ask you to double-space the essay to make it easier to read and to allow reviewers to make comments or suggestions about the assignment.
Each page of single-spaced content has 500-550 words, while a double-spaced page has 250-275. If you are using MLA or APA formatting style, the formatting standard for an essay should be (1) double-spaced, (2) Times New Roman font, and (3) one-inch margins all around. If you use Ariel font pages
How Many Paragraphs is a 2000 Words Essay
A 2000-word essay consists of between 7 and 9 paragraphs, each having between 3 and 5 or more full and coherent sentences. Please note that there are no proper rules on how many sentences your paragraph should have since each paragraph discusses different ideas relating to the main topic of your essay.
Some paragraphs could be shorter and others longer. Some paragraphs could be a sentence shorter, and others about half a page long. What matters more is how you structure and complete the paragraphs.
However, you should not concern yourself with the length of your paragraph that you forget what matters most: the content of the paragraphs. Communicate effectively the quality of the message to ensure you answer the topic.
Can I Write 2000 Words in Two Hours?
Writing a 2000-word article in two hours is challenging but not impossible. Typically, a good essay requires in-depth research, a clear structure for the paper, and an organization of your ideas, which requires adequate time.
However, quickly completing an essay depends on your familiarity with the topic and typing speed. Most adults have an average typing speed of 40 words per minute (WPM). However, for experienced typists, the average typing speed is about 76 words per minute. Many college students trying to finish their assignments on time usually type 60-70 words per minute.
If you are having an essay crisis and can’t seem to figure out how to write a 2000-word essay in two hours, use the following tips;
Plan your essay
Take 10 – 15 minutes to organize your thoughts by identifying your essay's main topics and ideas. Focus only on key ideas and avoid unnecessary details to save time. Then, decide how you will organize them in your paper. A great tip is to have a logical order, ensuring a link between all ideas.
Research Efficiently and effectively
All academic papers, especially long-form essays like a 2000-word essay, require in-depth research to gather supporting information for your topic. You need to dedicate a few minutes to gather sources before writing.
Write the Introduction
Use 5-10 minutes to write a compelling introduction, beginning with a hook to grab readers' attention. Then, provide some context about the topic and state your thesis statement.
Write the Body Paragraphs
Allocate 10- 15 minutes to discuss each idea supporting your main topic. If you have 5 ideas, it will take you about 50 minutes to finish writing the body of your essay.
Write Your Conclusion
Use 10-15 minutes to finalize your essay by restating your thesis statement, summarizing the main points, reminding the readers why they should care, and providing recommendations/ suggestions for the main topic.
Revise Your Essay
Use 20 minutes to review your draft to correct any mistakes you made while writing. The final draft should be free of any errors (punctuation, grammar, and spelling) and be plagiarism-free. You must also ensure that all ideas are clearly and concisely written.
Please note that writing a 2000-word essay under time constraints will likely affect the quality of your work; however, following the above tips ensures you finish a well-structured 2000-word essay quickly.
What is the Format for a 2000 Word Essay?
A 2000-word essay is an academic paper with the same format as others. This means it has an introduction, a body paragraph, and a conclusion. Your introduction and conclusion should comprise approximately 25% of the total word count of the essay, while the rest of 75% should be dedicated to the body.
Introductions
An introduction of a 2000-word essay is 5-10% of the total word count. It should be between 100 – 150 words of concisely written content. If you have no idea what to include in the introduction, the following tips will offer a starting point.
- Set the scene
- Introduce the topic or problem under discussion.
- If needed, provide definitions of complex concepts.
- An explanation of why the topic or problem matters. (provide the size or the scope of the matter).
- The purpose of the essay.
- Introduce the thesis statement, which is the central idea of the essay.
- Briefly provide the outline you will use to explain the paper's logic.
Your introduction should be a paragraph or two long since a paragraph is made of 100 words.
The Main Body
A body of a 2000-word essay will make up about 75% of the total word count. It should be divided into 5-7 paragraphs, each discussing one central idea that identifies the main topic. These paragraphs should be 150- 250 words, each supported by 2 or more references. Note that the longer the assignments, the more important it is to provide links that refer to earlier points, thus connecting ideas.
When you begin writing the body, your ideas will likely flow randomly from the mind. Since you are writing for readers with different backgrounds and viewpoints, you must organize these ideas to make it easier for them to process and understand. Use the following format to organize the body of your essay;
- Write a topic sentence that identifies the paragraph topic you will discuss.
- Supporting information , such as examples, details, and evidence, contributes to the main topic. When you provide evidence, ensure you explain why it is relevant to the topic.
- A concluding sentence also acts as a transition to the next paragraph. Provide a conclusion that reminds readers of what they have read and shows the topic's significance.
Use the above format to organize the rest of the body paragraphs. Consider writing this plan on paper and pinning it on your desk to remind yourself whenever you write an essay.
Additionally, consider using the following writing techniques and tools to help finish your essay in under two hours.
Technique 1: The Pomodoro technique
The Pomodoro Technique. This technique involves working continuously for 25 minutes and then taking a 5-minute break. The Pomodoro technique is effective because it allows you to focus while avoiding burnout. Research shows that taking regular breaks can increase well-being and performance.
Technique 2: Write in Batches
Writing in batches is an effective method to finish a 2000-word essay in two hours. It involves dividing your essay into sections and working on them before taking a break.
Use tools such as Grammarly and Hemingway Editor to help edit your work and ensure no errors before submission.
This is the final paragraph of your essay. Like an introduction, a conclusion makes up about 5-10% of a 2000-word essay. This means that a conclusion for a 2000-word essay has approximately 100-150 words.
If you follow the above format, the total word count will 2050.
How Long Will It Take to Write a 2000 Words Essay?
Finishing a 2000-word essay will take 6-8 hours on average. However, if you are just typing the essay without doing any in-depth research, outlining the work, or adding citations and references, it will take about 50 minutes. For a handwritten essay, it takes about 1.7 hours to finish a 2000-word essay.
Please note that some students can finish a 2000-word essay in just under two hours, while others can take at least five days (2 for in-depth research, 2 for writing the essay, and one for revising and editing) to finish. All this will depend on the complexities of the topic. A complex topic will probably require more time for research, especially if getting the sources for the topic is challenging.
The assignment deadline will also influence whether someone can finish the essay quickly or not. Many students often find themselves swamped with assignments, wondering which to prioritize. If you have a 1000-word essay and another for 2200 words, prioritize the latter and focus on finishing the shorter one later.
If you want to finish your essay quickly, avoid distractions such as social media, TV, friends, etc.
How Many References Are in a 2000 Words Essay
A 2000-word essay should have between 10 and 20 high-quality references. Please take note that these are just suggestions. Logically, there should be a source in every paragraph. Each argument supported by credible evidence must have a reference. Some factors that will determine how many references each of your paragraphs will have include:
The Type of Research
If you are conducting empirical research, you will need more references compared to doing research for a theoretical paper. This is because the latter focuses on synthesizing existing concepts.
Depth of the Research
If your 2000-word essay is about a complex topic, you must do more thorough research to locate all the evidence supporting or refuting your claims. This means your essay will have more references than one that does not need much research.
Assignment’s Requirements
Your instructors will specify the number of references to use in your essay; they might verbally communicate this in class or highlight it on the assignment prompt. Thus, it's essential to always read and understand your prompt before working on the assignment.
If there are no specifications about essay references, check with your instructor how many are appropriate for the type of essay you are writing.

When do you write an argumentative essay, approaches to argumentative essays, introducing your argument, the body: developing your argument, concluding your argument, other interesting articles, frequently asked questions about argumentative essays.
You might be assigned an argumentative essay as a writing exercise in high school or in a composition class. The prompt will often ask you to argue for one of two positions, and may include terms like āargueā or āargument.ā It will frequently take the form of a question.
The prompt may also be more open-ended in terms of the possible arguments you could make.
Argumentative writing at college level
At university, the vast majority of essays or papers you write will involve some form of argumentation. For example, both rhetorical analysis and literary analysis essays involve making arguments about texts.
In this context, you wonāt necessarily be told to write an argumentative essayābut making an evidence-based argument is an essential goal of most academic writing, and this should be your default approach unless youāre told otherwise.
Examples of argumentative essay prompts
At a university level, all the prompts below imply an argumentative essay as the appropriate response.
Your research should lead you to develop a specific position on the topic. The essay then argues for that position and aims to convince the reader by presenting your evidence, evaluation and analysis.
- Donāt just list all the effects you can think of.
- Do develop a focused argument about the overall effect and why it matters, backed up by evidence from sources.
- Donāt just provide a selection of data on the measuresā effectiveness.
- Do build up your own argument about which kinds of measures have been most or least effective, and why.
- Donāt just analyze a random selection of doppelgƤnger characters.
- Do form an argument about specific texts, comparing and contrasting how they express their thematic concerns through doppelgƤnger characters.

An argumentative essay should be objective in its approach; your arguments should rely on logic and evidence, not on exaggeration or appeals to emotion.
There are many possible approaches to argumentative essays, but there are two common models that can help you start outlining your arguments: The Toulmin model and the Rogerian model.
Toulmin arguments
The Toulmin model consists of four steps, which may be repeated as many times as necessary for the argument:
- Make a claim
- Provide the grounds (evidence) for the claim
- Explain the warrant (how the grounds support the claim)
- Discuss possible rebuttals to the claim, identifying the limits of the argument and showing that you have considered alternative perspectives
The Toulmin model is a common approach in academic essays. You donāt have to use these specific terms (grounds, warrants, rebuttals), but establishing a clear connection between your claims and the evidence supporting them is crucial in an argumentative essay.
Say youāre making an argument about the effectiveness of workplace anti-discrimination measures. You might:
- Claim that unconscious bias training does not have the desired results, and resources would be better spent on other approaches
- Cite data to support your claim
- Explain how the data indicates that the method is ineffective
- Anticipate objections to your claim based on other data, indicating whether these objections are valid, and if not, why not.
Rogerian arguments
The Rogerian model also consists of four steps you might repeat throughout your essay:
- Discuss what the opposing position gets right and why people might hold this position
- Highlight the problems with this position
- Present your own position , showing how it addresses these problems
- Suggest a possible compromise āwhat elements of your position would proponents of the opposing position benefit from adopting?
This model builds up a clear picture of both sides of an argument and seeks a compromise. It is particularly useful when people tend to disagree strongly on the issue discussed, allowing you to approach opposing arguments in good faith.
Say you want to argue that the internet has had a positive impact on education. You might:
- Acknowledge that students rely too much on websites like Wikipedia
- Argue that teachers view Wikipedia as more unreliable than it really is
- Suggest that Wikipediaās system of citations can actually teach students about referencing
- Suggest critical engagement with Wikipedia as a possible assignment for teachers who are skeptical of its usefulness.
You donāt necessarily have to pick one of these modelsāyou may even use elements of both in different parts of your essayābut itās worth considering them if you struggle to structure your arguments.
Regardless of which approach you take, your essay should always be structured using an introduction , a body , and a conclusion .
Like other academic essays, an argumentative essay begins with an introduction . The introduction serves to capture the readerās interest, provide background information, present your thesis statement , and (in longer essays) to summarize the structure of the body.
Hover over different parts of the example below to see how a typical introduction works.
The spread of the internet has had a world-changing effect, not least on the world of education. The use of the internet in academic contexts is on the rise, and its role in learning is hotly debated. For many teachers who did not grow up with this technology, its effects seem alarming and potentially harmful. This concern, while understandable, is misguided. The negatives of internet use are outweighed by its critical benefits for students and educatorsāas a uniquely comprehensive and accessible information source; a means of exposure to and engagement with different perspectives; and a highly flexible learning environment.
The body of an argumentative essay is where you develop your arguments in detail. Here youāll present evidence, analysis, and reasoning to convince the reader that your thesis statement is true.
In the standard five-paragraph format for short essays, the body takes up three of your five paragraphs. In longer essays, it will be more paragraphs, and might be divided into sections with headings.
Each paragraph covers its own topic, introduced with a topic sentence . Each of these topics must contribute to your overall argument; donāt include irrelevant information.
This example paragraph takes a Rogerian approach: It first acknowledges the merits of the opposing position and then highlights problems with that position.
Hover over different parts of the example to see how a body paragraph is constructed.
A common frustration for teachers is studentsā use of Wikipedia as a source in their writing. Its prevalence among students is not exaggerated; a survey found that the vast majority of the students surveyed used Wikipedia (Head & Eisenberg, 2010). An article in The Guardian stresses a common objection to its use: āa reliance on Wikipedia can discourage students from engaging with genuine academic writingā (Coomer, 2013). Teachers are clearly not mistaken in viewing Wikipedia usage as ubiquitous among their students; but the claim that it discourages engagement with academic sources requires further investigation. This point is treated as self-evident by many teachers, but Wikipedia itself explicitly encourages students to look into other sources. Its articles often provide references to academic publications and include warning notes where citations are missing; the siteās own guidelines for research make clear that it should be used as a starting point, emphasizing that users should always āread the references and check whether they really do support what the article saysā (āWikipedia:Researching with Wikipedia,ā 2020). Indeed, for many students, Wikipedia is their first encounter with the concepts of citation and referencing. The use of Wikipedia therefore has a positive side that merits deeper consideration than it often receives.
Prevent plagiarism. Run a free check.
An argumentative essay ends with a conclusion that summarizes and reflects on the arguments made in the body.
No new arguments or evidence appear here, but in longer essays you may discuss the strengths and weaknesses of your argument and suggest topics for future research. In all conclusions, you should stress the relevance and importance of your argument.
Hover over the following example to see the typical elements of a conclusion.
The internet has had a major positive impact on the world of education; occasional pitfalls aside, its value is evident in numerous applications. The future of teaching lies in the possibilities the internet opens up for communication, research, and interactivity. As the popularity of distance learning shows, students value the flexibility and accessibility offered by digital education, and educators should fully embrace these advantages. The internet’s dangers, real and imaginary, have been documented exhaustively by skeptics, but the internet is here to stay; it is time to focus seriously on its potential for good.

An argumentative essay tends to be a longer essay involving independent research, and aims to make an original argument about a topic. Its thesis statement makes a contentious claim that must be supported in an objective, evidence-based way.
An expository essay also aims to be objective, but it doesnāt have to make an original argument. Rather, it aims to explain something (e.g., a process or idea) in a clear, concise way. Expository essays are often shorter assignments and rely less on research.
At college level, you must properly cite your sources in all essays , research papers , and other academic texts (except exams and in-class exercises).
Add a citation whenever you quote , paraphrase , or summarize information or ideas from a source. You should also give full source details in a bibliography or reference list at the end of your text.
The exact format of your citations depends on which citation style you are instructed to use. The most common styles are APA , MLA , and Chicago .
The majority of the essays written at university are some sort of argumentative essay . Unless otherwise specified, you can assume that the goal of any essay youāre asked to write is argumentative: To convince the reader of your position using evidence and reasoning.
In composition classes you might be given assignments that specifically test your ability to write an argumentative essay. Look out for prompts including instructions like āargue,ā āassess,ā or ādiscussā to see if this is the goal.

We tested a new ChatGPT-detector for teachers. It flagged an innocent student.
Five high school students helped our tech columnist test a ChatGPT detector coming from Turnitin to 2.1 million teachers. It missed enough to get someone in trouble.
High school senior Lucy Goetz got the highest possible grade on an original essay she wrote about socialism. So imagine her surprise when I told her that a new kind of educational software Iāve been testing claimed she got help from artificial intelligence.
A new AI-writing detector from Turnitin ā whose software is already used by 2.1 million teachers to spot plagiarism ā flagged the end of her essay as likely being generated by ChatGPT .
āSay what?ā says Goetz, who swears she didnāt use the AI writing tool to cheat. āIām glad I have good relationships with my teachers.ā
After months of sounding the alarm about students using AI apps that can churn out essays and assignments, teachers are getting AI technology of their own. On April 4, Turnitin is activating the software I tested for some 10,700 secondary and higher-educational institutions, assigning āgenerated by AIā scores and sentence-by-sentence analysis to student work. It joins a handful of other free detectors already online. For many teachers Iāve been hearing from, AI detection offers a weapon to deter a 21st-century form of cheating.
But AI alone wonāt solve the problem AI created. The flag on a portion of Goetzās essay was an outlier, but shows detectors can sometimes get it wrong ā with potentially disastrous consequences for students. Detectors are being introduced before theyāve been widely vetted, yet AI tech is moving so fast, any tool is likely already out of date.
Itās a pivotal moment for educators: Ignore AI and cheating could go rampant. Yet even Turnitinās executives tell me that treating AI purely as the enemy of education makes about as much sense in the long run as trying to ban calculators.

Has tipping gone too far? Hereās a guide on when to tip.
Ahead of Turnitinās launch this week, the company says 2 percent of customers have asked it not to display the AI writing score on student work. That includes a "significant majorityā of universities in the United Kingdom, according to UCISA , a professional body for digital educators.
To see whatās at stake, I asked Turnitin for early access to its software. Five high school students, including Goetz, volunteered to help me test it by creating 16 samples of real, AI-fabricated and mixed-source essays to run past Turnitinās detector.
The result? It got over half of them at least partly wrong. Turnitin accurately identified six of the 16 ā but failed on three, including a flag on 8 percent of Goetzās original essay. And Iād give it only partial credit on the remaining seven, where it was directionally correct but misidentified some portion of ChatGPT-generated or mixed-source writing.
Turnitin claims its detector is 98 percent accurate overall. And it says situations such as what happened with Goetzās essay, known as a false positive, happen less than 1 percent of the time, according to its own tests.
Turnitin also says its scores should be treated as an indication, not an accusation . Still, will millions of teachers understand they should treat AI scores as anything other than fact? After my conversations with the company, it added a caution flag to its score that reads, āPercentage may not indicate cheating. Review required.ā
āOur job is to create directionally correct information for the teacher to prompt a conversation,ā Turnitin chief product officer Annie Chechitelli tells me. āIām confident enough to put it out in the market, as long as weāre continuing to educate educators on how to use the data.ā She says the company will keep adjusting its software based on feedback and new AI advancements.
The question is whether that will be enough. āThe fact that the Turnitin system for flagging AI text doesnāt work all the time is concerning,ā says Rebecca Dell, who teaches Goetzās AP English class in Concord, Calif. āIām not sure how schools will be able to definitively use the checker as āevidenceā of students using unoriginal work.ā
Unlike accusations of plagiarism, AI cheating has no source document to reference as proof. āThis leaves the door open for teacher bias to creep in,ā says Dell.
For students, that makes the prospect of being accused of AI cheating especially scary. āThere is no way to prove that you didnāt cheat unless your teacher knows your writing style, or trusts you as a student,ā says Goetz.
Why detecting AI is so hard
Spotting AI writing sounds deceptively simple. When a colleague recently asked me if I could detect the difference between real and ChatGPT-generated emails, I didnāt perform very well.
Detecting AI writing with software involves statistics. And statistically speaking, the thing that makes AI distinct from humans is that itās āextremely consistently average,ā says Eric Wang, Turnitinās vice president of AI.
Systems such as ChatGPT work like a sophisticated version of auto-complete, looking for the most probable word to write next. āThatās actually the reason why it reads so naturally: AI writing is the most probable subset of human writing,ā he says.
Turnitinās detector āidentifies when writing is too consistently average,ā Wang says.
The challenge is that sometimes a human writer may actually look consistently average.
On economics, math and lab reports, students tend to hew to set styles, meaning theyāre more likely to be misidentified as AI writing, says Wang. Thatās likely why Turnitin erroneously flagged Goetzās essay, which veered into economics. (āMy teachers have always been fairly impressed with my writing,ā says Goetz.)
Wang says Turnitin worked to tune its systems to err on the side of requiring higher confidence before flagging a sentence as AI. I saw that develop in real time: I first tested Goetzās essay in late January, and the software identified much more of it ā about 50 percent ā as being AI generated. Turnitin ran my samples through its system again in late March, and that time only flagged 8 percent of Goetzās essay as AI-generated.
But tightening up the softwareās tolerance came with a cost: Across the second test of my samples, Turnitin missed more actual AI writing. āWeāre really emphasizing student safety,ā says Chechitelli.
Say hello to your new tutor: Itās ChatGPT
Turnitin does perform better than other public AI detectors I tested. One introduced in February by OpenAI, the company that invented ChatGPT, got eight of our 16 test samples wrong. (Independent tests of other detectors have declared they ā fail spectacularly .ā)
Turnitinās detector faces other important technical limitations, too. In the six samples it got completely right, they were all clearly 100 percent student work or produced by ChatGPT. But when I tested it with essays from mixed AI and human sources, it often misidentified the individual sentences or missed the human part entirely. And it couldnāt spot the ChatGPT in papers we ran through Quillbot, a paraphrasing program that remixes sentences.
Whatās more, Turnitinās detector may already be behind the state of the AI art. My student helpers created samples with ChatGPT, but since they did the writing, the app has gotten a software update called GPT-4 with more creative and stylistic capabilities. Google also introduced a new AI bot called Bard . Wang says addressing them is on his road map.
Some AI experts say any detection efforts are at best setting up an arms race between cheaters and detectors. āI donāt think a detector is long-term reliable,ā says Jim Fan, an AI scientist at Nvidia who used to work at OpenAI and Google.
āThe AI will get better, and will write in ways more and more like humans. It is pretty safe to say that all of these little quirks of language models will be reduced over time,ā he says.
Is detecting AI a good idea?
Given the potential ā even at 1 percent ā of being wrong, why release an AI detector into software that will touch so many students?
āTeachers want deterrence,ā says Chechitelli. Theyāre extremely worried about AI and helping them see the scale of the actual problem will ābring down the temperature.ā
Some educators worry it will actually raise the temperature.

Accordingly, all performance tasks submitted in AP Seminar and AP Research must be the studentās own work. While students are permitted to use generative AI tools consistent with this policy, their use is optional and not mandatory.
Students can use generative AI tools as optional aids for exploration of potential topics of inquiry, initial searches for sources of information, confirming their understanding of a complex text, or checking their writing for grammar and tone. However, students must read primary and secondary sources directly, perform their own analysis and synthesis of evidence, and make their own choices on how to communicate effectively both in their writing and presentations. It remains the studentās responsibility to engage deeply with credible, valid sources and integrate diverse perspectives when working on the performance tasks. Students must complete interim ācheckpointsā with their teacher to demonstrate genuine engagement with the tasks.
Required Checkpoints and Attestations for AP Capstone
To ensure students are not using generative AI to bypass work, students must complete interim checkpoints with their teacher to demonstrate genuine engagement with the tasks. AP Seminar and AP Research students will need to complete the relevant checkpoints successfully to receive a score for their performance tasks. Teachers must attest, to the best of their knowledge, that students completed the checkpoints authentically. Failure to complete the checkpoints will result in a score of 0 on the associated task.
In AP Seminar, teachers assess the authenticity of student work based on checkpoints that take the form of short conversations with students during which students make their thinking and decision-making visible (similar to an oral defense). These checkpoints should occur during the sources and research phase (IRR and IWA), and argument outline phase (IWA only). A final validation checkpoint (IRR and IWA) requires teachers to confirm the studentās final submission is, to the best of their knowledge, authentic student work.
In AP Research, students must complete checkpoints in the form of in-progress meetings and work in the Process and Reflection Portfolio (PREP). No further checkpoints will be required.
College Board reserves the right to investigate submissions where there is evidence of the inappropriate use of generative AI as an academic integrity violation and request from students copies of their interim work for review.
Please see the AP Seminar and AP Research course and exam descriptions (CEDs) for the current policy on AI and other tools along with guidance on administering mandatory checkpoints.
AP Computer Science Principles Policy
AP Computer Science Principles students are permitted to utilize generative AI tools as supplementary resources for understanding coding principles, assisting in code development, and debugging. This responsible use aligns with current guidelines for peer collaboration on developing code.
Students should be aware that generative AI tools can produce incomplete code, code that creates or introduces biases, code with errors, inefficiencies in how the code executes, or code complexities that make it difficult to understand and therefore explain the code. It is the studentās responsibility to review and understand any code co-written with AI tools, ensuring its functionality. Additionally, students must be prepared to explain their code in detail, as required on the end-of-course exam.

This week I challenged my editor to face off against a machine. Barbara Kantrowitz gamely accepted, under one condition: āYou have to file early.ā Ever since ChatGPT arrived in 2022, many journalists have made a public stunt out of asking the new generation of artificial intelligence to write their stories. Those AI stories were often bland and sprinkled with errors. I wanted to understand how well ChatGPT handled a different aspect of writing: giving feedback.
My curiosity was piqued by a new study , published in the June 2024 issue of the peer-reviewed journal Learning and Instruction, that evaluated the quality of ChatGPTās feedback on studentsā writing. A team of researchers compared AI with human feedback on 200 history essays written by students in grades 6 through 12 and they determined that human feedback was generally a bit better. Humans had a particular advantage in advising students on something to work on that would be appropriate for where they are in their development as a writer.
But ChatGPT came close. On a five-point scale that the researchers used to rate feedback quality, with a 5 being the highest quality feedback, ChatGPT averaged a 3.6 compared with a 4.0 average from a team of 16 expert human evaluators. It was a tough challenge. Most of these humans had taught writing for more than 15 years or they had considerable experience in writing instruction. All received three hours of training for this exercise plus extra pay for providing the feedback.
ChatGPT even beat these experts in one aspect; it was slightly better at giving feedback on studentsā reasoning, argumentation and use of evidence from source materials ā the features that the researchers had wanted the writing evaluators to focus on.
āIt was better than I thought it was going to be because I didn’t have a lot of hope that it was going to be that good,ā said Steve Graham, a well-regarded expert on writing instruction at Arizona State University, and a member of the studyās research team. āIt wasn’t always accurate. But sometimes it was right on the money. And I think we’ll learn how to make it better.ā
Average ratings for the quality of ChatGPT and human feedback on 200 student essays
Exactly how ChatGPT is able to give good feedback is something of a black box even to the writing researchers who conducted this study. Artificial intelligence doesnāt comprehend things in the same way that humans do. But somehow, through the neural networks that ChatGPTās programmers built, it is picking up on patterns from all the writing it has previously digested, and it is able to apply those patterns to a new text.
The surprising ārelatively high qualityā of ChatGPTās feedback is important because it means that the new artificial intelligence of large language models, also known as generative AI, could potentially help students improve their writing. One of the biggest problems in writing instruction in U.S. schools is that teachers assign too little writing, Graham said, often because teachers feel that they donāt have the time to give personalized feedback to each student. That leaves students without sufficient practice to become good writers. In theory, teachers might be willing to assign more writing or insist on revisions for each paper if students (or teachers) could use ChatGPT to provide feedback between drafts.
Despite the potential, Graham isnāt an enthusiastic cheerleader for AI. āMy biggest fear is that it becomes the writer,ā he said. He worries that students will not limit their use of ChatGPT to helpful feedback, but ask it to do their thinking, analyzing and writing for them. Thatās not good for learning. The research team also worries that writing instruction will suffer if teachers delegate too much feedback to ChatGPT. Seeing studentsā incremental progress and common mistakes remain important for deciding what to teach next, the researchers said. For example, seeing loads of run-on sentences in your studentsā papers might prompt a lesson on how to break them up. But if you donāt see them, you might not think to teach it. Another common concern among writing instructors is that AI feedback will steer everyone to write in the same homogenized way. A young writerās unique voice could be flattened out before it even has the chance to develop.
Thereās also the risk that students may not be interested in heeding AI feedback. Students often ignore the painstaking feedback that their teachers already give on their essays. Why should we think students will pay attention to feedback if they start getting more of it from a machine?
Still, Graham and his research colleagues at the University of California, Irvine, are continuing to study how AI could be used effectively and whether it ultimately improves studentsā writing. āYou can’t ignore it,ā said Graham. āWe either learn to live with it in useful ways, or we’re going to be very unhappy with it.ā
Right now, the researchers are studying how students might converse back-and-forth with ChatGPT like a writing coach in order to understand the feedback and decide which suggestions to use.
Example of feedback from a human and ChatGPT on the same essay
In the current study, the researchers didnāt track whether students understood or employed the feedback, but only sought to measure its quality. Judging the quality of feedback is a rather subjective exercise, just as feedback itself is a bundle of subjective judgment calls. Smart people can disagree on what good writing looks like and how to revise bad writing.
In this case, the research team came up with its own criteria for what constitutes good feedback on a history essay. They instructed the humans to focus on the studentās reasoning and argumentation, rather than, say, grammar and punctuation. They also told the human raters to adopt a āglow and grow strategyā for delivering the feedback by first finding something to praise, then identifying a particular area for improvement.
The human raters provided this kind of feedback on hundreds of history essays from 2021 to 2023, as part of an unrelated study of an initiative to boost writing at school . The researchers randomly grabbed 200 of these essays and fed the raw student writing ā without the human feedback ā to version 3.5 of ChatGPT and asked it to give feedback , too .
At first, the AI feedback was terrible, but as the researchers tinkered with the instructions, or the āprompt,ā they typed into ChatGPT, the feedback improved. The researchers eventually settled upon this wording: āPretend you are a secondary school teacher. Provide 2-3 pieces of specific, actionable feedback on each of the following essaysā¦. Use a friendly and encouraging tone.ā The researchers also fed the assignment that the students were given, for example, āWhy did the Montgomery Bus Boycott succeed?ā along with the reading source material that the students were provided. (More details about how the researchers prompted ChatGPT are explained in Appendix C of the study .)
The humans took about 20 to 25 minutes per essay. ChatGPTās feedback came back instantly. The humans sometimes marked up sentences by, for example, showing a place where the student could have cited a source to buttress an argument. ChatGPT didnāt write any in-line comments and only wrote a note to the student.
Researchers then read through both sets of feedback ā human and machine ā for each essay, comparing and rating them. (It was supposed to be a blind comparison test and the feedback raters were not told who authored each one. However, the language and tone of ChatGPT were distinct giveaways, and the in-line comments were a tell of human feedback.)
Humans appeared to have a clear edge with the very strongest and the very weakest writers, the researchers found. They were better at pushing a strong writer a little bit further, for example, by suggesting that the student consider and address a counterargument. ChatGPT struggled to come up with ideas for a student who was already meeting the objectives of a well-argued essay with evidence from the reading source materials. ChatGPT also struggled with the weakest writers. The researchers had to drop two of the essays from the study because they were so short that ChatGPT didnāt have any feedback for the student. The human rater was able to parse out some meaning from a brief, incomplete sentence and offer a suggestion.
In one student essay about the Montgomery Bus Boycott, reprinted above, the human feedback seemed too generic to me: āNext time, I would love to see some evidence from the sources to help back up your claim.ā ChatGPT, by contrast, specifically suggested that the student could have mentioned how much revenue the bus company lost during the boycott ā an idea that was mentioned in the studentās essay. ChatGPT also suggested that the student could have mentioned specific actions that the NAACP and other organizations took. But the student had actually mentioned a few of these specific actions in his essay. That part of ChatGPTās feedback was plainly inaccurate.
In another student writing example, also reprinted below, the human straightforwardly pointed out that the student had gotten an historical fact wrong. ChatGPT appeared to affirm that the studentās mistaken version of events was correct.
Another example of feedback from a human and ChatGPT on the same essay
So how did ChatGPTās review of my first draft stack up against my editorās? One of the researchers on the study team suggested a prompt that I could paste into ChatGPT. After a few back and forth questions with the chatbot about my grade level and intended audience, it initially spit out some generic advice that had little connection to the ideas and words of my story. It seemed more interested in format and presentation, suggesting a summary at the top and subheads to organize the body. One suggestion would have made my piece too long-winded. Its advice to add examples of how AI feedback might be beneficial was something that I had already done. I then asked for specific things to change in my draft, and ChatGPT came back with some great subhead ideas. I plan to use them in my newsletter, which you can see if you sign up for it here . (And if you want to see my prompt and dialogue with ChatGPT, here is the link .)
My human editor, Barbara, was the clear winner in this round. She tightened up my writing, fixed style errors and helped me brainstorm this ending. Barbaraās job is safe ā for now.

What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is a conversational software that uses three advanced models called generative pre-trained transformers (GPT) to generate text and code based on user input. These models have been trained on vast amounts of text data from various sources like books, social media, websites, and Reddit discussions. During this training process, the models learn language rules, such as how words are used in sentences.
Itās important to note that ChatGPTās 3.5 version only has information up to 2021. However, if you upgrade to the 4.0 version with a paid plan, you can access a limited amount of information beyond that date.
Although ChatGPT is a series of language models, it generates output differently. Instead of using individual letters, ChatGPT uses tokens and pieces of words to create words. For example, the word dog is one token, but the word alligator is made up of two tokens: all and igator . To create output, ChatGPT calculates the likelihood of one word appearing with other words. However, there are other factors in generating output. The temperature setting is also essential.
Temperature determines how random or focused the output will be. A lower temperature setting, such as .2, will give a more focused and predictable answer. A higher temperature setting, such as 1.0, will provide more creative and random output, giving you a more comprehensive range of possibilities. By default, ChatGPTās temperature setting is around .7, giving you a balance of focused and creative output.
Now that you understand ChatGPT and how it works, letās discuss what it can and canāt do.
Understanding the Capabilities of ChatGPT
ChatGPT has been one of the most popular AI chatbots since its launch in 2022. Itās so popular that over 100 million people signed up for it in the first two months. With AI technology evolving at unprecedented rates, it can be challenging to determine what it can and canāt do.
Benefits of ChatGPT
ChatGPT is an incredibly versatile tool with limitless possibilities, making it an excellent choice for various tasks. Whether you need to research topics, extract and paraphrase information, translate text, grade tests, or want to have a conversation, ChatGPT can help.
As AI is still a relatively new technology, thereās still much to learn, and there may be some hiccups. Some say that technology is evolving too quickly and could lead to the loss of jobs. However, itās undeniable that AI is here to stay. You can achieve more in less time by embracing it and learning how to use it ethically.
That said, some potential drawbacks to using ChatGPT and AI, in general, are worth considering.
What Are the Limitations of ChatGPT?
The first and most important thing is to take what it gives you with a grain of salt. It has been known to provide entirely inaccurate information, so always double-check the facts. Another area for improvement with it is the fact that it canāt access the Internet for up-to-date information. As previously stated, ChatGPTās results are based on information available as of 2021. Therefore, it canāt give you the latest news or information on the latest technologies, which can cause issues.
Furthermore, it cannot generate images or videos, so you may need to use other AI technologies, such as AI art generators or video generators, to create digital assets. Nevertheless, there are plenty of great tools available to help with that.
Lastly, ChatGPTās results may not be as human-like as some would like. Youāll need to do a lot of fine-tuning to get the most out of it. However, thatās a good thing, considering using what it gives you word for word is unethical. After all, itās designed to assist you, not do your job for you.
How to Generate Prompts with ChatGPT
To be successful with ChatGPT (or other AI Chatbots), youāll need to develop the skill to create effective prompts. Itās more complex than you would think. As previously mentioned, AI models tend to spit out falsehoods occasionally, so starting with a good, descriptive prompt is essential. Itās so important in this evolving technology that new jobs are being created for prompt engineers . If you find yourself looking for a new way to make money with AI, it all starts with the prompt.
Here is a short list of practical ways to generate prompts:
Talk to AI like itās human: ChatGPT is conversational AI, so to get the best results, talk to it like youāre sitting across the table from someone having a conversation. When entering prompts, try to include casual details, be descriptive, and clarify what you want, down to even the most minute details.
Provide context : Try to include some explanatory text when crafting prompts. Donāt just make statements like create a headline about WordPress . Instead, use something like: Iām looking to introduce new users to WordPress so theyāll know how easy it is to use. Can you craft me some potential headlines that will entice users to read about WordPress? ?
Have ChatGPT assume an identity:
Another tip is to have the AI embody the person or company youāre inquiring about. For example, letās say you want to write a review about Divi . Rather than saying tell me why Divi is a great theme , say something like from the point of view of its CEO, describe why Divi may be the best choice for WordPress users .
Those are just a few specific examples of ways to enhance AIās output, but there are additional tips to consider:
- Re-ask the question until you get the answer you desire
- Make changes to your prompts to alter the output
- Specify the length of the answer youāre looking for
- Ask it to cite sources
Regardless of the type of answer, using a well-constructed prompt when using ChatGPT will give you better results than a standard prompt devoid of context, descriptors, or clarification.
10 Creative Ways to Use ChatGPT
Thereās a long list of things that ChatGPT can help you with, including creative tasks. If you are a creative professional or new to design, writing, or web development, incorporating ChatGPT ā or another good AI chatbot ā can make your job much easier. Letās look at ten ways to boost your creativity and save time on your projects.
1. Blog Topics and Keyword Research
Sometimes adding a new blog post to your website can be challenging. If you need a little help with keyword research and creating effective headlines for your posts, ChatGPT is a great tool to use. Using a good prompt, ChatGPT can generate keyword ideas based on the subject of your choice.
After picking a topic, you can ask ChatGPT to generate some related headlines. As an example, it gave us a list of 15 topics related to WordPress. After choosing WordPress Design Trends , it gave us ten pretty engaging titles that we can use.
Next, we prompted ChatGPT to provide an outline based on responsive design in WordPress. It ironed out a list of main points to craft our outline. While we had to make adjustments here and there, it provided a great start to draft our post.
2. Assist in Generating Copy for a Website
Using ChatGPT as a guide, you can generate copy for your posts, blurbs, FAQs, and more. However, as previously mentioned, you should never use AI to write your entire post. Using it to generate ideas is OK, but you should rewrite any generated copy in your voice. Aside from the ethical implications (a huge part), Google doesnāt care for AI-generated content, which could hurt your ranking in search engines . Itās always best to have it guide you, inspire you, and discover facts that you might not know. That said, be sure to fact-check everything it gives you, as it can generate false information.
Better yet, rather than having it generate copy for you, itās best to refine copy that you have written yourself.
3. Proofreading and Editing
When writing new content, especially as a beginner, it can be too easy to be wordy, misspell words, or omit a point that may be relevant. Thankfully, ChatGPT is the perfect tool to help revise, condense, or make your original content flow better. After writing a few paragraphs for your posts or other web content, input it into ChatGPT and prompt it to improve your content. One tip to follow is telling it to keep the original tone of voice . This lets the tool know that you intend to control what is written yet improve it based on the parameters you provide.
As an example, we took the paragraph weāve written above and asked it to make it more concise while keeping the original writing tone. Because ChatGPT is a conversational tool, it will try to utilize earlier prompts in the thread for relevancy. Based on this process, you can use ChatGPT to trim excess fluff, spot misspellings, make things more concise, or provide ideas on making your copy more relevant.
4. Creating WordPress Plugins
Another great way to use ChatGPT is to create plugins that you can use on your WordPress website. For the plugin to be functional and avoid further prompts, you must be more creative with your initial prompt.
For instance, we provided this information:
Create a WordPress plugin called āDee Maintenanceā that does the below actions once activated.
- After a user logs in, redirect them to the home page after logging in.
- If a user lands on the site but is logged out, show them a maintenance mode message that says this website is under maintenance. Give us a little time as weāre making things look awesome for you.
- Style the maintenance message with a grey background with a 5px border radius.
- Give the text a font size of 2em and make it red.
It provided a functional PHP file and told us how to implement it on our website. While you could use ChatGPT to code complex plugins, it can also be essential in creating plugins like these to help you keep your website bloat down.
5. Writing and Debugging Code
If youāre a web developer, chances are youāve encountered errors with your websiteās code or discovered console errors on your website. Thanks to ChatGPT, you can get the assistance you need with a well-crafted prompt. For example, we asked ChatGPT to identify a common console error to get help understanding the problem and how to fix it. It successfully identified the problem and provided us with the steps to correct it.
So, what happens if you have a more complex problem to solve? No worries because ChatGPT can assist with that too. In addition to debugging code issues, it will also write code for you. It understands various programming languages such as CSS, HTML, Javascript, PHP, etc.
If youāre a beginner, ChatGPT is an excellent tool for explaining what a codeās function is. For example, we grabbed a script from a Divi website and asked it to explain it. It described the codeās purpose with detailed information to make it easier to understand (as if we were a beginner). As a result, ChatGPT turned into an instructor, making it an excellent tool for people wanting to learn more about coding.
6. Generate Video Scripts
If you want to create promotional videos for marketing campaigns, ChatGPT is a great asset. Generating video scripts is the same process as blog posts but with a few differences. Of course, youāll need to start with a keyword or title, then provide as many details as possible to get the best results. Anyone who creates videos can tell you the process can sometimes take hours or even days to develop a script. ChatGPT can do it in minutes. You can even use detailed prompts for effects and transitions that you can copy and paste into a good AI video generator to enhance it.
It can even be used to create YouTube videos, TikTok videos , and much more. For instance, we asked it to make a 30-second clip about five unknown dog facts. It generated a full script with ideas on which assets to useāpretty amazing stuff.
7. Generate Surveys and Quizzes
Quizzes and surveys are great tools for gaining valuable insights from your customers. Marketers can take these answers and use them to develop good marketing strategies . They are short, simple, and engaging, making good conversation pieces for users to share on social media. ChatGPT excels at this, so making them is a lot easier. You can create topics, titles, descriptions, and, yes, questions to include in your surveys and quizzes in a few short minutes.
For example, we asked ChatGPT to create a survey for an online jewelry store with lagging sales. We entered a concise prompt and got some pretty good questions about their shopping experience. You can take what ChatGPT gives you to gain other ideas for questions or reformat them to meet the needs of your specific business.
If youāre a WordPress user, you can use a good quiz plugin or survey plugin to add a quiz to your site quickly. That said, the possibilities are endless. You can ask ChatGPT to create HTML to incorporate your quiz into a static website, prompt it to make a text-to-image description to use with an AI art generator, and more.
8. Market Research
When conducting market research with ChatGPT, being specific is the best way to start. Tell it about the product or service youād like insight on, provide specific demographics to look at, and even ask it to embody your target audience .
For instance, we asked ChatGPT to help identify people in Birmingham, Alabama, that would likely be interested in purchasing web design services. With a well-crafted prompt, it provided us with the age groups, income and education levels, and the specific locations of that area that would be our best demographic to target. While this is a basic example, it gives you a good concept of what ChatGPT can do.
Additionally, you can prompt ChatGPT to give a perspective or speak as a particular entity. It will help if you continue feeding it after the initial prompt to ensure you get the best results. Finally, as weāve stated many times in our article, please donāt take what it says as absolute. Following up with your research is essential to ensure you have the correct facts.
9. Write Product Descriptions
If you have an ecommerce website , one of the most tedious tasks is writing good product descriptions. This is especially true if you have hundreds of products to create. Thankfully, ChatGPT and other AI writing software Ā can help with that. As with any other task you ask of ChatGPT, you get what you give. So, to get the best results, be descriptive yet precise in telling it what you want.
We asked it to create a product description for an insulated 20-ounce cup we want to sell. After the initial prompt, it spits out five paragraphs, which is too much for a product description. So, in a follow-up prompt, we instructed it to provide two concise yet easy-to-read sections that make our product sound fun .
10. Generating AI Art
Our final creative way of using ChatGPT combines it with other AI programs to create beautiful artwork. Since ChatGPT is a language model, it canāt currently create images for you. However, there is a plethora of AI software that can help. When you are ready to create your art, you can combine it with a program such as MidJourney to design webpages , image assets, and so much more.
Alternatively, you can use ChatGPT to generate prompts for AI image generators. However, this method requires quite a bit of tweaking to get things like you want them, and most text-to-image AI software can do that for you.
Final Thoughts on Using ChatGPT
ChatGPT is a powerful tool with many practical uses, from blog topics and proofreading to coding websites and WordPress plugins. While it does have some mighty AI chops under the hood, itās important to remember that it does have some limitations. We highly suggest you use it as a guide rather than having it do all of your work for you. After all, itās meant to be an assistive tool, not a job replacement.
With its innovative technology, ChatGPT has the potential to revolutionize how we approach content creation, marketing, and technology. The skyās the limit with AI, and it is exciting to see what kind of advancements it will bring.

On Tech: A.I.
Applying to college hereās how a.i. tools might hurt, or help..
ChatGPT might change the application essay forever.
By Natasha Singer
I spent the last week talking with university officials, teachers and high school seniors about the dreaded college admissions essay.
I cover education technology at The Times. And Iāve been thinking a lot about how artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT, which can manufacture school essays and other texts, might reshape the college application process.
I was particularly interested to learn whether admissions officials were rejiggering their essay questions ā or even reconsidering personal essays altogether.
Amid a deluge of high school transcripts and teacher recommendations, admissions officers often use studentsā writing samples to identify applicants with unique voices, experiences, ideas and potential. How might that change now that many students are using A.I. chatbots to brainstorm topics, generate rough drafts and hone their essays?
To find out, I contacted admissions officials at more than a dozen large state universities, Ivy League schools and small private colleges, including Juan Espinoza , the director of undergraduate admissions at Virginia Tech.
Right now, he told me, many universities are still trying to figure out how the A.I. technologies work and what they mean for the admissions process.
