The data presented here are experimental. They are based on a sample of the research output in Economics and Finance. Only material catalogued in RePEc is considered. For any citation based criterion, only works that could be parsed by the CitEc project are considered. For any ranking of people, only those registered with the RePEc Author Service can be taken into account. And for rankings of institutions, only those listed in EDIRC and claimed as affiliation by the respective, registered authors can be measured. Thus, this list is by no means based on a complete sample. You can help making this more comprehensive by encouraging more publications to be listed ( instructions ) and more authors to register ( form ). Tufts University

About tufts university.

Founded in 1852, Tufts University is a private research university based in Medford, Massachusetts, with two additional US campuses in the cities of Boston and Grafton – also in Massachusetts – and another in Taillores, France.

Attracting nearly 12,000 students a year, it is a medium sized American university.

The Medford campus houses some of the university’s oldest buildings. It features the Schools of Arts and Sciences, the School of Engineering, the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, and the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service.

The Boston campus is mainly centred in the Chinatown district. It is home to the Schools of Medicine, Dental Medicine, Graduate Biomedical Sciences, Nutrition Science and Policy, and the Human Nutrition Research Centre on Aging.

The Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine is based in the Grafton campus, comprising more than 600 acres of land and located to the west of Boston.

Its Taillores satellite campus is situated in a picturesque alpine environment and has been recognised by the National Association of Branch Campus Administrators as one of the best branch campuses.

Initially used to host summer camps, the Taillores campus was given to Tufts in 1978 and now caters for summer study programs, where students are encouraged to live with local families and immerse themselves in French culture and language.

Tufts University lays claims to more than 45 interdisciplinary centres that focus on research within a range of topics from medicine, science and technology, to animals and the environment.

In addition to its Taillores summer programs, Tufts’ students can also take advantage of the many opportunities to participate in full-year or semester-long programs at its various overseas partner universities.

PhD Programs

flags

Pursue meaningful research. Create lasting change.

The doctor of philosophy (phd) program in international relations.

The PhD program in International Relations trains scholars to conduct cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research across key areas of international affairs and political science. A combination of in-depth, hands-on fieldwork and comprehensive theoretical study enables PhD students to uncover the meaningful questions that ultimately shape their future research and professional careers.

The Neubauer Family Program in Economics and Public Policy

A joint program between the Fletcher School and the Department of Economics at Tufts University, the Neubauer Family Program in Economics and Public Policy focuses on producing new scholars and policymakers to address critical issues centered on economic development, energy needs associated with economic growth, and the environmental and climate consequences of progress.

Scott McDonald

I came to The Fletcher School because its interdisciplinary structure allows me to pursue my academic interests in a manner few other institutions would.

Scott McDonald, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Program requirements .

Note that the information below refers to only the PhD in International Relations at The Fletcher School. For information on the Neubauer Family Program in Economics and Public Policy, visit the Department of Economics page.

Students in Fletcher's PhD Program in International Relations move through three program phases on their way from admission to graduation. They start with classes, arranged within a structured curriculum that still allows significant flexibility in course selection. When their class requirements are complete, students take comprehensive exams, and then move on as PhD candidates to research and write a dissertation.

Doctoral students shape a curriculum based on their interests within Fletcher’s primary doctoral fields of study:

  • Comparative and Regional Studies
  • Gender and Intersectional Analysis
  • Human Security and Humanitarian Affairs
  • International Business
  • International Development and Environmental Policy
  • International Security

Regardless of their choice of field, all students pursue foundational courses in international relations theory and research methodology.

Students also supplement their primary field of study with a second field that can be self-designed or selected from the Fletcher School’s wider list of fields of study . The student’s primary and secondary fields of study form the basis for their comprehensive exams.

Students seeking additional opportunities to individualize their studies may cross-register for up to a quarter of their classes at another graduate school at Tufts University or at Harvard University.

Students who have received their master's degree at another institution generally pursue twelve courses (36 credits) at Fletcher, with limited opportunities to have prior coursework applied to their degree. Those who possess a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy (MALD) generally pursue an additional four courses (12 credits), for a total of twenty courses for the two degrees.

Degree Requirements Beyond Coursework

Comprehensive Exams

Doctoral students demonstrate mastery of their subjects through comprehensive examinations, composed of a written exam in each of the two fields of study and an oral exam that integrates the material from the two areas. Students generally sit for their comprehensive examinations within a year of completing their coursework.

Dissertation

Once they have passed their comprehensive exams and achieved PhD candidacy, students propose, research, and write a dissertation. The completed dissertation should bear evidence of independent research and constitute a substantial contribution on the subject. When the dissertation is complete, the PhD candidate participates in a public oral defense of the dissertation.

Additional Degree Requirements

In addition to the exam and dissertation requirements outlined above, doctoral students must:

  • Demonstrate proficiency in a second language.
  • Submit a master's thesis for evaluation by a Fletcher faculty member. This could be a master's thesis written prior to enrollment at Fletcher or a thesis written during the first year at Fletcher.

Admission to the Fletcher School PhD Program is a highly competitive process. The PhD Admissions Committee seeks students with a history of academic success and the potential to achieve their research and career goals in the future.

Master’s Degree: Prospective students must have a master's degree in a field that is relevant to international relations and directly related to the applicant's proposed doctoral studies. The applicant's master's degree must come from a program that required at least three semesters of full-time study (not including internships or language study) and at least twelve courses in which the applicant earned a cumulative GPA of 3.6 or higher. Applicants should also have at least basic proficiency in a second language, which may be English for non-native English speakers.

Professional Experience:  In addition to a strong academic background, successful applicants generally have professional experience that they can draw upon from work prior to their master’s degree or between their master’s degree and PhD studies.

Doctoral Research Topic: Applicants are strongly encouraged to ensure that their research can be supported by a member of the Fletcher faculty . Even among highly accomplished applicants, the selected research topic must be one in which a professor can advise the student in their specific field. Reaching out to faculty members during the application process is not required but can be a useful way of ensuring that there is a good match with a potential advisor. The final match between admitted students and faculty advisors will be made through the application review process. Adjunct and visiting professors cannot serve as PhD advisors.

Applicants with questions about the admissions process are encouraged to email the Office of Admissions or the PhD Program Director .

Career development & support

Fletcher graduates go on to become respected leaders in academia and research, as well as the non-profit, government, and private sectors. They produce research and policy that contributes substantively to the theory and practice of international affairs and builds on Fletcher’s long-standing reputation as a hub for meaningful discourse on complex issues.

Fletcher faculty and the Office of Career Services   support Fletcher graduates with career advice, professional development, and general assistance.

Careers in International Relations

Fletcher's Office of Career Services works with PhD students interested in a career in international relations practice. Our graduates have pursued careers at a wide range of institutions and organizations.

Careers in Academia

For PhD students focused on the academic job market, Fletcher offers support at a variety of levels. To develop teaching skills, students can participate in Tufts University’s three-week summer intensive Graduate Institute for Teaching  and co-teach a class with a faculty mentor. Many students have also developed and taught classes in the University’s Osher Institute or Experimental College .

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can the phd program be pursued part-time or through remote study.

Fletcher's PhD program is a full-time, on-campus program that does not offer either part-time or remote-study options. Students are generally on campus for three years or until they have defended their dissertation proposal. After that, they may choose to move elsewhere to research and write their dissertation.

How long does it take to pursue a PhD at Fletcher?

Once students have completed their coursework, they generally take one year or less to complete their comprehensive exams and an additional year or less to prepare a formal dissertation proposal. After the proposal has been approved, researching, and writing the dissertation averages about three years, but the time needed depends on how many other activities the student is pursuing in addition to their dissertation.

Are PhD students expected to teach or conduct research at Fletcher?

No. Although Fletcher PhD students may wish to pursue teaching or research opportunities within Fletcher or elsewhere at Tufts University, with only a few exceptions, Fletcher scholarships come with no teaching, research, or other work obligations.

See what students say:

The campus culture at Tufts University in Massachusetts is “thriving and alive,” and as such it really encourages students to merge their academic and social interests and “pursue both in a passionate way.” This is a place where, through active discussion and a student body with a zest for life, “passion meets reality.” The academic experience here is marked by “small classes with knowledgeable and interesting professors.” “I have had the opportunity to explore a huge amount of academic subjects and really challenge myself,” says a student. If students actively seek out their “highly accessible and prompt” professors, they will be rewarded with “a better learning experience and with incomparable relationships with brilliant (yet down to earth) professors.” “Whenever I ask them a question that they might not know the answer to, they do research on it immediately and return quickly with a detailed response.” The academic curriculum is a “perfect mix of liberal arts and university,” and the professors are actively concerned with making sure that students leave with a true understanding of the course material, “not just a book list under their arms.” These “global minded, ambitious” students rise to the challenge and beyond, as “most every student focuses on life beyond their education” and seeks out a well-rounded life. “It is far easier to succeed here than to fail, as long as you are committed to getting as strong an education as possible,” advises a student. “I’ve literally been offered a research position by asking questions multiple times,” says another. The international relations program at this globally-aware school is particularly strong (as are study abroad options), but activism spills over into the entirety of the student body. “Change is easily made here,” and “if you have a problem with something, you can easily address it.” A lot of effort is put into ensuring that every student transitions well into college and succeeds. A strong alumni network and excellent internship opportunities also “open up a world of opportunities after graduation.”

Student Body

This is a group of go-getters, so here “everyone has the same passion for excellence” and “is engaged in so many activities on campus.” Tufts is “a quirky (yet normal) compilation of a bunch of young adults with not only big dreams for the world, but with dedication and motivation to complete them.” “It’s like a competition to be the “most interesting [person] in the world,” says a senior. Even better, “being nerdy is cool!” “We here embrace weirdness. If talking to new people in daily life is awkward, we know it and we revel in it,” says a sophomore. There is “no discrimination whatsoever,” though “it can actually get frustrating how politically correct everyone is.” From “dancing and singing to teaching and tutoring to international community service,” students here are “stunningly busy and happy to be so.”

Campus Life

People here are “always thinking about politics” and all have a lot of spirit for Tufts, and “it’s really nice to walk around campus knowing that you’re in a place where almost everyone is excited to be there.” “This is a great place to share knowledge you have, because everyone wants to hear it and share their own experiences and thoughts,” says a student.

MS in Economics

The MS in Economics provides a deep understanding of the theoretical and empirical foundations of economics and the quantitative tools required for research careers in economics. The program offers the following two degree program tracks, which students can choose from based on their own preferences and academic and professional needs:

  • The MS in Economics: Course-based track — An eight-course program, which can be completed in one year, without a thesis.
  • The MS in Economics: Research-based track — A twelve-course program to be completed in two years, with a master's thesis.

All students are initially accepted into the course-based track and may apply to the research-based track at the end of the second semester. The decision to accept students into the research-based track is based on performance in the first academic year. Both degree tracks are attractive to students looking for advancement in both professional and academic careers, and both carry STEM certification.

Upon receiving their degree, students pursue a variety of options. Some enroll in PhD programs in economics or related subjects, such as marketing, finance and accounting. The MS in Economics provides students with an exceptional background for doctoral study. Students may also apply to the department's Neubauer Family Program in Economics and Public Policy (PhD). The MS coursework may count for credit towards the doctoral degree and is determined in consultation with the relevant program director.

Some graduates find employment in consulting firms, government and international agencies. Other graduates pursue careers such as teaching (either at community colleges or private secondary schools), working in the financial sector, or conducting research at various institutions.

Course-based Track

Program requirements and policies.

  • Students in the MS in Economics course-based track must complete a one-year residency requirement and must pass eight semester-long courses. A grade of B- or above is considered passing.
  • There are six required core courses for the MS in Economics consisting of three required two-semester sequences in microeconomics, macroeconomics, and statistics/econometrics.
  • The final two courses needed to complete the course-based track are elective courses. The electives may be selected from a variety of approved courses within the department, or from approved courses offered outside the department at Tufts such as The Fletcher School, the School of Engineering, or in departments such as Mathematics, Computer Science, or Psychology. They could also include courses taken at nearby institutions, including Boston College, Boston University, and Brandeis University. A maximum of two graduate courses taken elsewhere can be transferred, subject to the approval of the department. Students may petition for inclusion of other courses not currently on the list.

The table below describes how students fulfill the requirements for the course-based MS in Economics, in one academic year.

Fall Semester: Economics 201: Statistics
Economics 203: Microeconomic Theory I
Economics 205: Macroeconomic Theory I
One Approved Elective
Spring Semester: Economics 202: Econometrics
Economics 204: Microeconomic Theory II
Economics 206: Macroeconomic Theory II
One Approved Elective

Research-based Track

  • Students in the MS in Economics research-based track must complete a two-year residency requirement and thirteen semester-long courses [a total of forty-three (43) semester-hour units.]
  • The Economic Research seminars EC211 and EC212 : two-unit courses taken each semester. These courses require that students attend seminars and lectures at the department on a semi-weekly basis. Students are expected to read the papers, present a summary of the paper to the instructor and actively participate in the seminar.
  • An additional Applied Econometrics elective course:  The Applied Econometrics graduate course will focus on an empirical analysis of the material learned in the six core courses. It will also provide additional econometric tools necessary for students to be able to carry out a substantive research project. Together, the Applied Econometrics course and the thesis will serve as a capstone for the research-based MS in Economics degree.
  • Two master's thesis courses:  The thesis must be a major research project that is conducted under the supervision of a member of the department. The completed thesis must be presented and successfully defended in an oral examination administered by a formal thesis committee. Thesis credit is awarded when a final draft is approved by the thesis committee. It is important to note that a master's thesis must contain original work and cannot be submitted as a paper in other courses.

The table below indicates how students typically complete the research-based MS in Economics.

The sustainability of economic development and growth have become central policy concerns of our time. In order to address these issues, you will need the ability to integrate comparative and international political economy perspectives.

The mission of the joint Ph.D. program in Economics and Public Policy to produce scholars and policy-makers who can address the emerging critical issues centered on economic development.

Offered jointly by Tufts Department of Economics and The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, the Economics and Public Policy program draws upon the expertise of well-established scholars whose work centers on development, energy, and environmental issues, political economy and, in particular, on the intersection of these concerns.

The program includes three required, two-term core courses in microeconomics, macroeconomics, and statistics-econometrics. These will typically be followed by field courses in the areas of development, energy and environmental policy, and political economy. Suggested coursework and research schedules for completion of the degree are shown below.

Each field will require three courses for completion, including a required core course. The courses taken to fulfill the field requirements must be approved by the program's Advising and Curriculum Committee, which is made up of Economics and Fletcher faculty, and chaired by a member of the program's Steering Committee. Each student's transcript will indicate his or her field of study.

Progression through the program will require that students demonstrate "Acceptable" performance. This will include earning passing grades in all courses. It will also require passing field exams in two of the three fields listed above.
