20 Thesis topics related to Transportation

transportation engineering thesis topics

In today’s fast-paced world where everybody is constantly on the move, there is an increasing requirement for better and safer transportation facilities. This includes planning of the roadways and rail tracks, terminals and parking infrastructure. Walkability is also a growing concern among citizens with the heavy automobile traffic rendering the streets and squares abandoned.

Transportation , as a topic, can never go out of fashion as there is a constant need for development to keep up with the growing population and needs of the people. Let us look at 20 Thesis topics related to transportation.

1. Airports

Airplanes have practically blurred the borders worldwide, opening up a multitude of opportunities for travel and business expansion. The added comfort and services provided by airports have made them an increasingly popular mode of transport in today’s fast-paced world. Airports are strategic in terms of economy, providing freight and cargo facilities.

Apart from globalisation, tourism and commerce, airports are integral in case of emergency evacuations, for instance, the 1990 airlift of Indians from Kuwait or the Vande Bharat flights more recently.

2. Railway Stations

From the Delhi Metro and Mumbai Local to the London Tube and the New York City Subway, trains form a crucial part of the public transport scenario in modern times. Train services, be it inter or intrastate, are cheap, convenient and quick, hence preferred by the masses.

Additionally, the interstate train network is far more widespread than the air network, connecting to the smaller towns and villages with no air connectivity, transporting both goods and people.

3. International Cruise Terminal

Waterways were the mode of transport before the airplanes for international travel. With the likes of Titanic, cruises were developed into a whole new tourism sector.

The terminals are integral with respect to the transport of cargo as well as acting as a mixed-use space incorporating commercial and entertainment services amongst others.

4. Inland Water Transport

A domestic means of transportation, they house ferries to transport people to nearby islands or simply for a joy ride in the sea. For instance, the coracle is a small boat used traditionally in countries like Ireland, Scotland, India, Vietnam, Iraq and Tibet.

Sometimes, these may also be houseboats like those in Alleppey in Kerala or the shikara in Dal Lake.

5. Bus Terminal

The most common mode of transport among the general public are the buses which result in the need for proper infrastructure for bus terminals as well as bus stops. Bus terminals, in particular, require planning in terms of the spaces allotted for the bus parking and ticketing counters to segregate the inter and intra city bus services.

Considering the popularity of buses as a mode of transport, each bus stop is a significant social hub.

6. Rickshaw Stands

Developing countries provide local public transport for 2-8 people which may be called by different names like tuk-tuk, pousse-pousse or simply a rickshaw. Rickshaw services may be motor operated, a cycle rickshaw or hand-pulled. Faring along with the motor vehicles, it may be a bit unsafe keeping in mind the lightweight of these rickshaws.

This mode of transport has no developed infrastructure in place but there is a requirement for rickshaw stands to avoid congestion of traffic.

7. Cycle Stands

Cycling for short distances is an increasingly growing trend among people today, particularly in modern cities, while in smaller towns and villages, cycles are the most common means of transportation. Separate cycling lanes are provided alongside the wide roads for automobiles. However, cyclists require a safer environment and larger spaces.

Today, a lot of cities offer rental cycles which can be boarded and dropped off at fixed locations. Infrastructure needs to be developed to create more pick up and drop off locations that are easily accessible and at the same time connect to other modes of transport as well.

8. Electric Motor Vehicle Station

Fuel-based vehicles are at the threshold of being replaced by electric motor vehicles all over the world, thanks to popularisation by the likes of Tesla. An eco-friendly alternative to meet the transportation requirements, EMVs generate an additional need for charging stations that must be widespread and easily accessible.

Moving a few years ahead in time, this will be the most sought after amenity, requiring suitable infrastructure.

9. Urban Transport Planning

With an increase in urbanisation, cities today are experiencing a large influx of population. For this, cities need to be planned in a manner that accommodates the facility and transportation requirements of the current population while also leaving some scope for future expansion.

The rising concerns of the harmful effects of the automobile have resulted in a need to balance the spaces allotted for automobiles and pedestrians while attempting to improve the public transport experience.

10. Transit Oriented Development

Transit-oriented development translates to urban development integrating housing, retail and commercial spaces into a walkable neighbourhood with easily accessible public transport facilities.

According to the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy, “It means inclusive access for all to local and citywide opportunities and resources by the most efficient and healthful combination of mobility modes, at the lowest financial and environmental cost, and with the highest resilience to disruptive events. Inclusive TOD is a necessary foundation for long-term sustainability, equity, shared prosperity, and civil peace in cities.”

What’s in the sludge? This intern seeks to know.

Jessica Jarratt

By Michael R. Malone [email protected] 07-11-2024

As part of a National Science Foundation (NSF) internship , Jessica Jarratt is spending 10 weeks this summer sifting through sludge, or biosolids, the outgoing byproduct from the water purification process of wastewater treatment plants.

The freeze-dried thermally processed sludge is a cleaned-up version and not as, well, gross as some might imagine. And while it’s not everyone’s version of a dream experience, Jarratt, a rising senior at the University of Miami with a double major in marine science and chemistry, is excited to be researching in an area that fascinates her—the toxicity of microplastics in terrestrial environments.

Jarratt was selected for a Research Experiences for Undergraduate (REU) offered by the NSF and so joined a group of 10 or so undergraduates from colleges around the country this summer at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS), the William & Mary graduate school for marine science located close to historic Yorktown. The NSF REU provides interns with a stipend, housing, and traveling expenses for the summer.

“There is significant research within marine environments, but a lack of knowledge of the microplastics in terrestrial environments,” Jarratt explained. “By modifying similar methods from previous studies and applying it to biosolids, we’re able to explore the health implications of biosolids when they are used as fertilizer and directly exposed to the food we consume.”

The wastewater solid residue has a high concentration of nitrogen and phosphorous, some of the most important ingredients in fertilizer.

“So many people think, ‘Oh, it’s fertilizer, great,’ but the reality is that there are other components of biosolids that are harmful to us. Considering that people are having plastics in all parts of their body, it’s likely contributing to how we’re being exposed to it.”

For the REU, each student pursues a specific research project and is matched with faculty and other researchers who specialize on the topic.

As part of her major at the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science , Jarratt studies with associate professor Ali Pourmand , researching in his Neptune Isotope Laboratory . That isotope geochemistry research is close to, though not exactly, the area of emerging contaminants she’s most drawn to explore.

At an internship last year with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in Washington, D.C., Jarratt focused on environmental policy and generated a list of scientists who conduct the research she’s most interested in. From that list, she contacted Robert C. Hale , who’s done significant research on microplastics and organic pollutants.

“We had a lot of similar interests and it’s exciting to find someone that does the research that I would be interested in conducting in graduate school,” Jarratt said. “I’m more interested in the contaminant side of the wastewater, and he convinced me that I could explore different areas of microplastics research, not just on marine environments.”

Hale told her about the REU opportunity at VIMS where he’s based. Now she’s benefiting from his direct mentorship.

“I’m really excited to be working under him. This is part of a larger EPA project, and I’m working on one of its subprojects, trying to find the best way to purify this really organic rich matrix and isolate the microplastics,” she said.

Jarratt’s interest in marine pollutants sparked in high school when she was assigned a history class project to analyze random contaminants in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

“I was fascinated, but never imagined that people made a career out of it, that it’s very niche and random,” she recalled. “I was always really interested in chemistry, so I came to Miami undeclared, then saw we could pursue marine science dual degrees through Rosenstiel. That ended up being the perfect combination for me because I now have the analytical chemistry skillset and understand the applications to marine environments.”

Jarratt arrived in late May and will intern until early August. She’s enjoying the camaraderie with other students, staying in the dorms during the week and is close to where she grew up in northern Virginia. She’s benefited both academically and careerwise from her mentorship with Hale, and likewise from the science writing and resume writing seminars as part of the internship. While most of her time is spent in the lab, she’s enjoyed the group field trips to the college’s Eastern Shore Laboratory and will soon be voyaging on VIMS’ research vessel similar to the University’s F. G. Walton Smith .

Her final presentation research plan on “Purification Techniques for Improving the Determination and Characterization of Microplastics in Complex Wastewater Solids” will be submitted to the NSF and ideally developed into a more official paper.

Wastewater treatment plants purify water so it is drinkable and useable again but, in doing so, produce sludge that has a slew of microplastics in it, Jarratt explained.

“Our main objective is to introduce individual reagents such as enzyme cellulase or hydrogen peroxide to see which work best to degrade the plastics and then combine these steps to make our optimized protocol,” she said. She plans to apply this procedure to other samples to tests its effectiveness without degrading the plastics.

“If microplastics remain in the sludge that is then applied to farms and soil, we are essentially reintroducing the plastics to the environment that eventually end up back in the oceans through runoff. It can be a very cyclical process,” she said.

Jarratt plans to apply her experience and learning this summer to her honors thesis research at the University and to graduate in the spring of 2025. She’ll participate in field work after graduation while she decides where to attend graduate school.

Alpine Space Ventures closes first fund to grow the space economy on both sides of the pond

Alpine Space Ventures founders

When early SpaceX engineer Bulent Altan and long-time investor Joram Voelklein surveyed the European space sector at the end of the 2010s, they were surprised: It looked a whole lot like the beginnings of American NewSpace in the early 2000s, when SpaceX and other companies were just setting up shop.

The pair decided to go in early on a personal investment in German launch startup Isar Aerospace, but they also considered making a bigger play to more fully grasp the huge opportunity to help grow the space sector in both the U.S. and Europe. To do that, they established Alpine Space Ventures in Munich, Germany in 2020. Four years later, and after two years of fundraising, they closed their first $184 million (€170 million) fund — the largest first-time VC fund dedicated to space globally.

Their LPs include more than 20 early SpaceX employees, as well as major institutions like the European Investment Fund, the NATO Innovation Fund and others. The capital is earmarked for no more than 10-15 investments (five of which have already been made), with check sizes up to $5.4 million (€5 million), with significant dry powder reserved for follow-on rounds. Around 70% of the fund is earmarked for European companies, but the firm is very much interested in both sides of the Atlantic, Altan said.

The strong ties to SpaceX are evident in the firm’s philosophy, which Altan outlined in a recent interview. “We are very much aligned with what SpaceX has done, and we are investing in the wake of it,” he said. “SpaceX has opened up a huge satellite sector […] so you look at our portfolio, you see component builders, you see satellite builders, really people who are benefiting from SpaceX. We are staying away from the really long-term stuff, and we are probably staying away from direct competition to the 800-pound gorilla in the room, which is SpaceX.”

Alpine’s thesis is that as the space industry grows, and as more non-space companies look to benefit from access to space, there will be less of a need for any particular space company to completely vertically integrate. Instead, a supply chain will grow, similar to that in the automotive industry. The firm sees telecommunications and Earth observation as two markets that will drive the demand for things like satellite buses and components.

As it stands now, that portfolio consists of five companies (though the firm has received almost 1,000 pitches in the last two years, Voelklein said). They include K2 Space, a Los Angeles-based startup that has not been shy about its ambitions to build massive satellites for a Starship-enabled future , and German satellite builder Reflex Aerospace.

Voelklein credits much of the thesis to the team’s strong technical background: “We see missing links in the value chain,” he said. “That’s something that you only can do with this type of team.” The engineering-heavy background is evident: Alpine Space’s technical director is Catriona Chambers, an accomplished engineer whose 16-year stint at SpaceX included leading avionics for Starship, and its technical advisor is Hans Koenigsmann, who became the fourth technical employee of SpaceX in 2002.

Despite its considerable advantages, space is a unique sector with its own particular challenges for venture investing. While many companies may promise large technical moats, valuable IP and lasting physical assets, identifying those that will close on a typical 10-year fund cycle can be difficult.

Aligning technical promise and venture timelines “is the toughest part,” Altan said. “In order to do that, you have to come from the industry, you have to have understood where space is going. That’s why I think we were able to convince our investors to really go the distance with us.”

There are some aspects to NewSpace that have been normalized by SpaceX and others, but still might strike people as strange, if not downright irresponsible — like, for example, that a rocket blowing up in mid-air can still be cheered as a success, or that a first-time orbital demonstration of a novel satellite will more than likely have some hiccups. Part of Alpine’s job, both with politicians and prospective LPs, is educating them about the space industry’s new attitude of rapid hardware iteration.

The other main hurdle for anyone investing in deep tech is the fact that companies often require a lot of upfront capital. Space startups in the U.S. often use funding vehicles offered by the Department of Defense and NASA to move their tech from R&D to MVP, and more mature companies (like SpaceX) have benefited from enormous contracts that help spur innovation and bring new capabilities to the nation. Europe is just starting to follow suit and it’s likely imperative for the indigenous space sector that it does.

“Even though there is a partnership between U.S. and Europe — and we love that partnership — a good partnership also means being able to come also to the table with your own capabilities, and Europe is realizing that,” Altan said.

It took longer than anticipated to close the fund, in part due to geopolitical events like the war in Ukraine and the end of the zero-interest rate phenomenon, Altan said. “But in the end, our target mark was always €160 million and we surpassed that. So it took longer than we thought, but it was also a good thing.”
