WELCOME TO THIS BOOK. Okay, so, I'm in my k drama period, which will last from about 4 months ago until my death and beyond, and What's Wrong With Secretary Kim? is one of my forever faves. Premise: cold, aloof, Miranda Priestly CEO has an assistant who has been with him for years, but she quits to pursue her interests. When she leaves, he absolutely ceases functioning, because of course he is madly in love her, and tries to get her back. AMAZING, RIGHT? WELL WELL WELL, this book took that general premise and improved on it by giving me, and I am not exaggerating, the best, horniest couple ever. Because the cold aloof CEO in question is Theo, who is also a former olympic swimmer (I LOVE SWIMMERS), and he has been trying to play it cool in front of his assistant for years (for noble reasons, even!). And the assistant is Alba Serena (though in my heart she'll always be Alba Medusa) and she is the most competent lady in the universe (MAYBE TOO COMPETENT FOR HER OWN GOOD? SHE TAKES CARE OF EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE AROUND HER and I literally loved how much her need to be there for everyone, even to her own detriment, was explored and became very much a conflict in the relationship). And Alba has the best job every, which is BOOK-THEMED DECORATING (does it exist? i need someone to come over and decorate my room so that it looks like this very book pls.) But really, allow me to underscore how good T H E S E X was 😍 😍 😍 Also: amazing secondary characters and descriptions of decor, Dominican food/family/culture, a reality TV element, and quite frankly, the best stepmother/stepson relationship I've ever read in a book, ever. 9000000/10. (I am so obsessed, I literally changed the name of a character of the book I'm writing to Serena in honor of Alba Serena. I AM IN DEEP, MY FRIENDS) Disclosure: I requested and got an ARC from the publisher on Netgalley.

TL;DR: The sharpest, sexiest, wittiest, brightest Pride and Prejudice retelling I've ever read, period. TL;DR: The sharpest, sexiest, wittiest, brightest Pride and Prejudice retelling I've ever read, period. Nikki Payne is the writer I aspire to be and I'm going to recommend to this book to everyone I know till the day I die. INCOHERENT RAMBLINGS: Okay... so. I really don't know where to start with this one. Like, I truly have no idea how to articulate how incredible this book was. Maybe if I say this it will come across: I read it twice in a row. I originally read it, loved it, and then I was traveling but I kept thinking about how amazing the book was, so I was like... You know what, I'm gonna reread passages of it on my various flights. And ended up just rereading ALL OF IT. It's one of my faves I've ever read, and I'm pretty sure it's my fave P&P adaptation and to be clear, there are a tons of things that work in this book, but I think that my favorite is how Nikki Payne has managed to really capture the spirit of every single Jane Austen character and to adapt them so masterfully, while keeping them true to the specific setting(s) of this book. One example among a million: Maurice (who's Liza Bennet's little brother and the Mary of this story). Like... He's TOTALLY Mary, but also such a complex, well rounded character, and here I am, stanning Maurice. Nikki, what have you done to me? And: can you do it some more? Okay, so... I suck at coherent reviews, so I'm just gonna love-letter in bullet points: (MIGHT CONTAIN SLIGHT SPOILERS... actually I feel like going in blind might be the best experience.) - Liza Alize Bennett, I want to marry you. You are my fave main character ever. YOU SPARKLE AND I LOVE YOU. - Dorsey, you painfully awkward Ms Venezuela idiot, reading your POV and watching you fumble through your character arc was one of the most rewarding experience of my life. Also I LOVE HOW HORNY YOU ARE FOR HER BECAUSE SAME, pls keep up the good work, you'll always be my disco dick. - Park, you're the only valid Fitzwilliam - Granny: When people ask me which P&P character I like best I always say Mr. Bennet, and now I'll say it EVEN HARDER. - LeDeya the password guesser, a a fully fleshed character and AMAZING - Bev/Colin/Senator DeBerg: I will never stop laughing. - Okay is this driving home how much I loved this book? Like I said I can't write reviews but guys THE BANTER, the way L & D constantly call each other out, but also the way Dorsey shares Pinoy culture with Liza and the way he does the work to understand her positions about the gentrification of the place where she lives. - Janae. My fave Jane ever. LOTS OF FAVES IN THIS BOOK OKAY, LOTS? - omg the THERE WAS ONLY ONE NAP POD SCENE. OMG. - EXCELLENT POINTS WERE MADE ABOUT SELF CHECK OUTS. - okay no spoilers but in the book there is a scene that is similar to P&P 2005 where Darcy walks in the moor BUT it's different and perfectly matches the values of Dorsey and Liza and I WILL NEVER STOP THINKING ABOUT IT - OMG so the "let's walk around the room" scene? IT'S THERE, BUT IT'S YOGA. 💀💀💀💀 - Are you here for an excellent boiled potato scene? YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED. - The sex is like... You know, not even just the sex. I mean, the sex is great, 900/10, but the sexual tension. It's like this book has taken the handflex in P&P 2005 and said "let me boil it, then dry it, then sprinkle it all over this book." THEY ARE SO HORNY FOR EACH OTHER. - the questions. the app. the texting. - OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE I DIDN'T MENTION GIGI SOONER georgiana i love you so much and pls keep on calling out your bro on his plentiful BS - okay you know what's cool? how in P&P Darcy swoops in and saves the Bennets? Here the Bennets save themselves. Dorsey is there, and he's super supportive, but his grand gesture is actually another one. And i LOVED LOVED LOVED THIS. - ALSO? it's Liza who saves his ass in the end. Bc she's the best. - Dorsey's emails. Sharon!!!!!! AND LIZA'S RADIO PROGRAM. You know what? I feel like I'm just yelling random things into the void but I literally loved everything about this book and I cannot wait for it to be out so I can fangirl over the most minute details of Nikki Payne's writing with every other reader. Pls pick up this book, you'll thank me! (Well, not me. No reason to thank me. You'll thank the author!! ALSO IF THEY DON'T MAKE A MOVIE I WILL LITERALLY CHAIN MYSELF IN FRONT OF NETFLIX.) disclosure: nikki and i share a publisher, Berkley

It's a beautiful twist on fake dating (dude and dudette who hate (but also thirst after) each other at first sight decide to fake date to thwart their friends' matchmaking nosiness) but what made it the most special to me is that i saw so much of myself in both bea and west. she truly struggles in a bunch of social situations and feels constantly like she's wrong, and west has this spock-ish "must be controlled at all times" stiffness and also feels like he's wrong, and on paper they shouldn't work together but they do and it's beautiful and they absolutely complete each other and i just want them to live happily ever after with their beautiful hedgehog (ily Cornelius) and a bunch of geriatric cats 😭😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ ALSO THE SECONDARY CAST BETTER GET THEIR OWN BOOKS OR ELSE I NEED JULES TO HAVE HER HEA 🥺 🥺 🥺 Disclosure: Got an ARC from the publisher, who is also my publisher (Berkley)

An author's note explains Title IX and offers websites supporting women and BIPOC women in STEM academic fields. The overall story provides insight into graduate and postgraduate academic life and careers, especially in STEM fields.
You have to be strong and tough to make it in the academic world, especially in STEM fields. Don't be afraid to speak up when you've been harmed or you learn about something unethical. Your web of lies will eventually come to light, and when it does, it may cause more hurt than being truthful from the start would have.
Olive and Ahn are good models of women in STEM. They're extremely loyal and supportive of each other, and Anh creates chances to support other women, especially BIPOC women in STEM. Adam is very protective and kind on a personal level toward Olive, but to his students he's harsh and uncompromising and seems uncaring. Olive makes a grand gesture out of compassion for Anh and models perseverance in advancing her research and career.
Olive reads as White, is from Canada, and is very slim. Adam implies he's Jewish and is very tall and powerfully built. Best friend Anh's family is from Vietnam, and she identifies as a woman of color. Roommate Malcolm reads as White, dates men, and enters a romantic relationship with another man. Olive wonders if she's asexual.

An incident of verbal sexual assault with an attempted kiss and coercion. An excerpt at the end from a future book has sexual harassment and cyberbullying. A man pins another against a wall by the collar and threatens to kill him.

Other than a few kisses and some romantic tension, there's only one sex scene, but it's extended, explicit, and meant to arouse. Oral and genital sex, manual stimulation, genital penetration, sucking nipples and genitals, and orgasm are described in detail with some crude words like "clit" and "c--k." Good examples of consent are modeled, and birth control and being "clean" are talked about. A few times adults talk about sex or sex acts like sixty-nining, butt stuff, and getting a "hand job."

A few food and beverage brands, and a couple of entertainment franchises to establish character and setting.
All characters are adults of legal drinking age in California, where the story is set. Very little actual drinking is depicted, but there are mentions of past drunkenness, a weekly beer and s'mores night, and taking advantage of free alcohol at academic meetings and conferences.

Adults mention past excessive drinking, look forward to free alcohol at university events, and have a weekly "beer and s'mores night." Two characters remember one of them projectile vomiting after eating bad shrimp, but it's not described. Olive is an orphan with no family. Her mother died of pancreatic cancer, so grief and loss are important themes, along with the struggles women still face in STEM-related fields.

THE LOVE HYPOTHESIS is about Stanford graduate student Olive, who needs to convince her best friend, Anh, that it's OK for Anh to date a guy Olive had recently been seeing but wasn't really interested in. So she hatches a plan to "fake-date" none other than the Biology department's most prestigious professor, Adam Carlsen, who's also a huge jerk. As Olive and Adam's ruse gets harder and harder to keep up, Olive starts to feel like she wishes their dating wasn't actually fake. Will she be able to untangle her web of lies without ruining everything, for everyone?
This romance set in the lofty world of a prestigious graduate school program has its ups and downs. It's refreshing to see women in STEM represented and important to highlight how much many women struggle in that world. The Love Hypothesis has some funny banter, especially with colorful supporting characters. Readers who enjoy very familiar romcom tropes will feel at home here, because this story is chock-full of them. The one explicit sex scene is easy to skip for those who aren't interested. A big drawback is Olive's truly bad and unrealistic decision making, which strains believability and takes the reader outside the story.
Families can talk about the graphic sex in The Love Hypothesis . Is it over-the-top? Realistic? Is reading about it different from seeing it in movies, videos, and other media?
What are some concerns about reading or watching explicit sex ? Do you compare yourself or your body to the characters? Does it make you afraid, feel creepy, or unsure about what sex is like for real people?
What about all the strong language? Is it realistic? Is it a big deal? Why, or why not?
Talk about women studying and working in STEM fields. What are some of the challenges Olive and Ahn face? How do they deal with them? Who supports them? What can men do to make STEM fields more welcoming and inclusive?

Vozes do Silêncio: a invisibilidade do indivíduo negro no sul do Brasil
