I love your lists! They have been so helpful in finding books for my 11 year old, reluctant reader! Thank you so much!

YAY! It makes me so happy to know this. You are very welcome. 🙂

Hello this is a nice resource to have but I was looking more for classic books recommended for my son’s age 10yo? I’m I missing a list somewhere?

I don’t have a list like that but my friend, Erica at What Do We Do All Day does here: https://www.whatdowedoallday.com/classic-books-for-tweens/ .

I could not find a printable Summer Reading List for fifth grade, and I really like what you have for the other grade levels. I am the librarian for a private school, and I would love to share your lists with my students.

thank you so much for pointing that out — it’s fixed. Here’s the link: https://imaginationsoup.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/5th-grade-summer-reading-list-2.pdf

I agree. I love the books lists and would like to share with the families at my school; however, I am unable to find printable lists for many of the grades. Only Pre-K, 1st, and 4th are working for me.

Sorry about that — my forms aren’t working. Do you want all of the grade level lists? I am happy to email them to you.

Hello! Love your site and the resources it provides for myself (with my own children) and for my school. I tried the 5th grade link above and it says “page not found.” Is there another link to try? Thanks for sharing!

You have the BEST book lists. I know I can trust your decisions and they’ll make every member of my family happy. Whether we’re listening to them on audio books or reading together. They’re great!

I have read the book The One and Only Ivan with my class it is an amazing book for children.

5th grade summer learning activities

We designed this fifth grade summer learning calendar to be a fun, easy way for your child to practice important skills over the summer. Fifth graders should be able to work independently on most of these worksheets and activities, but if you can, check on your child’s progress periodically throughout the day. As a study break, encourage your child to try the PE challenges or get some exercise. It will help them focus — and it’s a great study habit for middle school and beyond. For the science activities, an adult’s curiosity and assistance may be needed. Remember, kids this age respond more to positive reinforcement, so showing your enthusiasm at whatever your child accomplishes will give them motivation to keep trying! summer homework for class 5

Summer homework may start as early as elementary school, but you don’t have to do it the way it’s always been done! Veteran educators like third-grade teacher Alycia Zimmerman have spent time thinking about how to make summer homework meaningful and interesting enough that students buy in—and even want to do it.

Read on for Zimmerman’s summer homework game plan and ideas for how to make summer assignments more fun for everyone.

1. Try a New Student Meet and Greet

If possible, meet your incoming students before summer break (even if it’s virtual!) to instill the importance of summer learning.

At the end of the school year, coordinate with the teachers of your incoming students to swap classes for a period. Introduce yourselves to your future students and build excitement for the fun and challenging learning ahead and the very “grown-up” summer homework you will assign.

“We’ve been far more successful in instilling the importance of our summer assignments when presenting about it face-to-face rather than just sending a packet of directions home cold,” says Zimmernan. “The students sit on the edges of their seats as we talk about the importance of summer reading and our certainty that they will do everything they can to 'keep their brains healthy, pink, and strong’ over the summer.”

2. Emphasize the Importance of Summer Reading

Talk about the best summer assignment of all: diving into books!

Reading should be a treat, not a menial assignment, so Zimmerman doesn’t feel guilty about making reading the bulk of her summer homework. Here are some of her most effective strategies for promoting summer reading:

Have students fill out a log  to keep track of the books and other texts they read over the summer. It isn’t necessary to require a certain number of books or specific titles. Simply ask that they find books they love and spend lots of time reading them.

Have your current students write book reviews of their favorite titles to send home with your rising students. Invite your current students to serve as reading ambassadors and speak to the younger students about the importance and joys of reading. When coming from slightly older peers, the message is very well received.

And of course: Sign your students up for the Scholastic Summer Reading Program ! From May 9 to August 19, your students can visit Scholastic Home Base to participate in the free, fun, and safe  summer reading program . As part of the program, kids can read e-books, attend author events, and keep Reading Streaks™ to help unlock a donation of 100K books from Scholastic – distributed to kids with limited or no access to books by Save the Children.

3. Share Fun and Educational Activities

Direct your students to fun (and educational) activities.

When considering other homework, the best options are activities that students will be motivated to do because they’re entertaining.

Give your incoming students the “everything is better in moderation” speech so they understand that they shouldn’t play hours of computer games every day this summer. If possible, send them home with printable and book-based packs to polish their skills for the year ahead (you can even pair these with your own assignments):

4. Connect Through the Mail

Stay connected with your students over the summer through cards.

Giving incoming students the opportunity to connect with you and with each other can motivate them to complete summer assignments. Here’s one plan for connecting via letters:

Have your incoming students mail you a letter of introduction. Explain that you want to hear about their summer activities, their hobbies, their families, and anything special they want you to know before the school year begins.

When you receive letters from your students, send a postcard back with a brief response. Tell them a bit about your summer plan, and let them know you can’t wait to see them in the fall.

Encourage them to write again!

You can also pair up students and have them write to each other over the summer. In September, they can bring their pen pal letters to class to display on the bulletin board.

Take advantage of everyone’s increasing familiarity with virtual resources by connecting online, too! Post a short video, article, or question once a week on your classroom's online platform, and invite both incoming students and rising former students to write their thoughts in the comments section. Be sure to moderate their comments and enjoy their back-and-forth dialogues as they engage with each other.

How To Finish Summer Homework Assignments: 14 Tips To Save Your Child’s Summer

  • July 19, 2018

summer homework for class 5

Many schools assign homework for students to complete before they return to class in September. This results in both parents and students having to learn how to finish summer reading and homework while balancing fun summer activities.

This summer, school is out and homework is in.

If your child has been putting off a pile of summer homework and reading assignments—he or she is not alone.

Reading books and writing assignments during the summer may not sound appealing to many students—or parents. Students can also get UK homework help if they need the some help with completing their assignment! But summer assignments are a great way to combat the effects of Summer Learning Loss and keep your child’s brain active over the break.

The Facts On Summer Learning Loss

Six weeks in the fall are spent re-learning old material Two months of reading skills are lost over the summer One month of overall learning is lost after summer vacation

With the right mindset, goals, and structure, you’ll have no problem finishing summer reading and homework between BBQ’s, ball games, and beach trips.

Follow these 14 steps to learn how to complete summer homework—without sacrificing summer fun.

14 Tips For Finishing Your Summer Homework Assignments

Make a game plan, tip 1: take a (quick) break.

It’s hard to go from a full year of schoolwork to tackling summer homework right off the bat. Let your child take a week off of homework at the start of the summer. This will give his or her brain a chance to relax and reset, and enjoy taking part in fun summer activities like sports.

Tip 2: Review Project Requirements

Don’t have your child dive head-first into his or her homework assignments. Review the expectations of each project with your child and discuss how much time he or she will need to complete them.

It would be a shame to waste time redoing a project because your child didn’t understand it initially. Reviewing all requirements is an important first step to starting off on the right foot.

Tip 3: Break Down Each Project Into A Series of Goals

Think about which assignments will take the longest and what your child will need to complete them during the summer. Break these larger assignments into a series of goals that need to be met to complete the project.

Examples of goals include “read 2 chapters per week” or “write essay introduction by July 15th”.

Set Aside The Right Amount Of Time

Tip 4: plan a weekly summer homework schedule.

This should be similar to a school year homework schedule, but altered for the summer. T he ideal amount of time to spend doing summer homework per week is 2-3 hours , so figure out where that time fits into your child’s average summer week.

Tip 5: Make A List Of Supplies & Resources

Your summer adventures could take you and your child to a wide variety of places. Make sure you both know what to bring with you so your child can tackle homework when not at home.

Examples of supplies include:

  • Textbooks or Assigned Novels

Tip 6: Choose Assignment Topics Based On Interest, Not Length

Sometimes students are given options when it comes to topics to research or books to read over the summer. Encourage your child to make these decisions based on the topics that interests him or her most—not which is “easiest”. This will result in your child enjoying his or her work, and allow him to benefit more from it.

Help Your Child Do Work On-The-Go

Tip 7: adjust your homework schedule for trips & vacations.

Exploring new places is an amazing learning experience, so don’t feel like you should sacrifice them for more homework time. Instead, plan your child’s homework schedule around these day trips and vacations.

If you know your child won’t have time to complete work while you’re away on a longer trip, make up those hours in the weeks before and after your trip.

Tip 8: Tackle The Work Your Child Can Do On-The-Go

While writing an essay is a project to save for when you return home, there are assignments that your child can tackle from just about anywhere. Options for homework to do on vacation include projects that are doable in small chunks—like reading a book or completing a math worksheet.

Tip 9: Bring Your Child’s Supplies With You

Remember that supplies list you created? Make sure you pack that backpack and bring it with you on your trip! It’d be a waste to find a spare hour to finish that math assignment, only to realize your child left his or her calculator at home.

Tip 10: Capitalize On The Quiet Times

Even the busiest trips include some quiet time. If you’re early for a dinner reservation, have your child complete a chapter of reading while you wait. Or, encourage your child to wake up 20 minutes early to answer some math questions without disruption.

Build A Support Team For Your Child

Tip 11: schedule a weekly workdate for your child & a friend.

There’s no reason your child has to work through summer homework alone. Make a weekly work date with a friend where they can tackle summer assignments together. If that friend is in the same class as your child, they can even discuss questions and challenges together. Build A Support Team For Your Child

Tip 12: Review Your Child’s Progress Every Week

Each week, speak with your child about the work he or she accomplished, and what is planned for the week ahead. If you know your child will be busy soon, work together to reorganize his or her homework schedule.

Tip 13: Touch Base With a Tutor (Or Enrol In Summer Learning Program)

A new set of eyes can make all the difference in making sure your child gets his or her summer assignments done efficiently and effectively. Your child’s tutor will be able to give constructive feedback and turn this feedback into goals for the upcoming school year.

If you want an extra head start for your child this school year, enroll him or her in a Summer Learning tutoring program to get started on the right track.

And Most Importantly…

Tip 14: reward your child with summer fun.

While schoolwork is important during the summer, it doesn’t have to come at the sacrifice of having fun. Whenever your child completes a new project or achieves a goal, reward him or her with a treat or fun summer activity.

Work Hard—And Play Hard—This Summer

Summer might seem like it will last forever, but the school year will be here before you know it. Don’t let your child fall into the habit of procrastination—instead, make a plan together and stick to it.

If you follow these tips, your child will finish summer homework and summer reading in no time…and develop great learning and study habits that will already be in place for next year!

NBA free agency tracker: Live updates, news as Klay Thompson picks Dallas; Paul George, Tyrese Maxey agree to deals with 76ers

Lebron james might be the biggest name left on the free agency board.

NBA free agency is in full swing and perhaps the biggest name on the board already has a new home. In the early hours of Monday morning, 9-time All-Star Paul George agreed to a 4-year max contract with the Philadelphia 76ers worth $212 million . The potential seismic shift in the East was bolstered by Philly also agreeing to terms of a 5-year, $204 million max extension with Tyrese Maxey , who was the NBA's Most Improved Player last year, averaging 25.9 points per game on his way to a first All-Star selection.

LeBron James , who declined his player option with the expectation of signing a new deal with the Lakers is the top name remaining on the board. Last season, James posted averages of 25.7 points, 8.3 assists and 7.3 rebounds per game on 54% shooting in 71 games played. On the second day of the NBA Draft, James got more incentive to stay with the Lakers when the club drafted his son, Bronny , with the No. 55 overall pick in the second round. The four-time NBA MVP has said for years that he'd like the opportunity to play with his eldest son before retiring.

Yahoo Sports has you covered for NBA free agency from the top 40 available players to the top players at each position who are available this summer.

NBA free agent big board: The top 40 players on the market

The free agency negotiating window opened 6 p.m. ET Sunday, when each NBA team can negotiate with players on the market and perhaps even reach a deal. Those deals can't be signed until July 6 at 12:01 p.m. ET, but there will be plenty of transactional action until then and beyond.

Here is our big board of the top free agents on the market.

Top free agents by position: point guards | shooting guards | small forwards | power forwards | centers

See the full big board here .

The Clippers add another piece in the wake of losing Paul George. This time it's veteran point guard Kris Dunn, according to TNT's Chris Haynes. Terms of the deal weren't initially reported.

Dunn averaged 5.4 points, 3.8 assists, 2.9 rebounds and on steal in 66 games with the Utah Jazz last season, 32 of them starts.

The Magic keep one of their own with a two-year, $14 million deal with guard Gary Harris.

Harris, 29, averaged 6.9 points, 1.7 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 0.9 steals while shooting 31% on 3.1 3-point attempts per game last season. He made 27 starts in 54 games played.

The deal to send Klay Thompson to the Mavericks is reportedly done. In return, the Warriors received a 2025 and a 2031 second-round pick from Dallas.

Collin Gillespie to the Spurs organization

After spending last season with the Nuggets, Collin Gillespie is headed to the Spurs on a two-way deal. He's the latest former Villanova star to land a new deal in the league, but it remarkably wasn't with the Knicks.

Magic working to extend center Jonathan Isaac

With Orlando having found a new three-year agreement with big man Goga Bitdaze, the Magic are working to renegotiate and extend the contract of versatile defensive center Jonathan Isaac, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Jayson Tatum inks richest contract in NBA history

After leading the Celtics to a championship, Jayson Tatum secured the richest contract in NBA history on Monday afternoon. Tatum agreed to a supermax extension worth an estimated $315 million over five years, according to multiple reports. He'll now be with the Celtics through the 2029-30 season.

Aaron Holiday staying with the Rockets

Aaron Holiday is staying in Houston. Holiday agreed to a two-year, $10 million deal to return to the Rockets on Monday afternoon, according to The Athletic's Shams Charania. He averaged 6.6 points, 1.8 assists and 1.6 rebounds off the bench for the team last season.

De'Anthony Melton to sign 1-year, $12.8 million deal with Warriors

Guard De'Anthony Melton has agreed to a one-year, $12.8 million contract with the Golden State Warriors , reports The Athletic's Shams Charania.

Melton averaged 11.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3 assists and 1.6 steals while shooting 36% on 3-pointers for the Philadelphia 76ers last season. He was limited to 38 games due to a back injury, starting 33 games. Presumably, Melton will help fill the void left by Klay Thompson signing with the Dallas Mavericks .

Klay Thompson agrees to deal with Mavericks

Klay Thompson is headed to the Western Conference champion Dallas Mavericks, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski . The four-time NBA champion with the Golden State Warriors had reportedly agreed to a three-year, $50 million contract with a player option that would involve a sign-and-trade between Dallas, Golden State and at least one other team. Thompson, one of the great shooters in NBA history, is a career 41.3% shooter from 3-point range.

Free agent wing Nicolas Batum is joining the Los Angeles Clippers, marking another move in an eventful free agency for the franchise.

Per ESPN's Wojnarowksi, the deal is for two years and $9.6 million.

Batum joins the Clippers from the Philadelphia 76ers hours after former Clipper All-Star Paul George agreed to terms with the 76ers . The Clippers have also agreed to terms with James Harden, Derrick Jones Jr. and Kevin Porter Jr. since free agency opened Sunday evening, none of whom project to compensate for the loss of George.

DeMar DeRozan will not re-sign with Bulls: Report

DeMar DeRozan will move on from the Chicago Bulls after three seasons, according to the Chicago Sun-Times' Joe Cowley . The 15-year veteran made the decision after the Bulls acquired Josh Giddey in a trade for Alex Caruso.

. @JCowleyHoops on DeMar DeRozan's status with the Bulls: "He will be signing elsewhere. So we can go ahead and close the chapter on the King of the Fourth." The Los Angeles Lakers are reported to be interested in DeRozan, but his market is shrinking with the Philadelphia 76ers signing Paul George , Kentavious Caldwell-Pope going to the Orlando Magic and Derrick Jones Jr. signing with Los Angeles Clippers .

DeRozan averaged 25.5 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game and shot 34% on 3-pointers during his three seasons in Chicago. He has also played for the Toronto Raptors and San Antonio Spurs .

Derrick White agrees to 4-year, $125.9M extension with Boston: Report

Derrick White ’s summer was already going pretty well. It just got a hell of a lot better.

Fresh off playing a pivotal role throughout the Celtics’ run to the 2023-24 NBA championship , White has agreed to a four-year, $125.9 contract extension that will keep him in Boston , according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski . The re-up represents a significant leap over the four-year, $70 million deal that White signed as an extension of his rookie-scale contract back in 2020 and includes a player option.

Boston Celtics guard Derrick White has agreed on a four-year, $125.9 million contract extension, sources tell ESPN. The deal includes a player option. Huge offseason priority for the champs. pic.twitter.com/eAMo9yf7oe — Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) July 1, 2024

The 6-foot-4 combo guard has become one of the NBA’s most consistent and disruptive perimeter stoppers, earning All-Defensive Second Team nods in each of the last two seasons for his work as the kind of high-motor playmaker willing to sacrifice his smile to secure a loose ball if it gets him one step closer to a win. He’s frequently lauded as the best shot-blocking guard the game’s seen since Dwyane Wade , and for good reason: No other backcourt player has tallied anything close to White’s 163 blocks over the past two seasons, which is more than all but 17 players at any position .

Spurs targeting Nic Batum?

Having already signed future Hall of Fame point guard Chris Paul, another veteran the Spurs are targeting in free agency is French forward Nic Batum, sources said, who would join countryman Victor Wembanyama.

Batum, 35, averaged 25.9 minutes for Philadelphia last season.

Delon Wright agrees to 1-year deal with Bucks

Guard Delon Wright is leaving the Miami Heat to join the Milwaukee Bucks , reports ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. Last season, he averaged 5.4 points and 2.6 assists while shooting 37% on 3s.

The Bucks will be Wright's ninth NBA team. In addition to the Heat, he's played for the Toronto Raptors , Memphis Grizzlies , Dallas Mavericks , Detroit Pistons , Sacramento Kings , Atlanta Hawks and Washington Wizards during his nine previous seasons

Free agent C Drew Eubanks has agreed on a two-year, $10 million deal to join the Utah Jazz, sources tell ESPN. Eubanks spent the past season with the Phoenix Suns and stays in the West on the Jazz’s frontline. pic.twitter.com/5ejnjRNp7h — Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) July 1, 2024

After spending parts of six seasons with the the Philadelphia 76ers, Tobias Harris is moving on.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski is reporting that the soon-to-be 32-year-old forward is joining the Detroit Pistons on a two-year, $52 million contract. Harris played 70 games last season and averaged 17.2 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists in nearly 34 minutes per night.

Harris had an up-and-down final season with the 76ers, most notably in the playoffs when he put up 19 points in the team's Game 5 win against the New York Knicks in the playoffs only to follow that up with a scoreless Game 6 in over 29 minutes.

Big changes are coming for the Knicks. Adrian Wojnarowski is reporting that Isaiah Hartenstein is leaving New York to take a three-year, $87 million deal with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Hartenstein is viewed as one of the top available centers, following a breakout campaign this season that saw him average 7.8 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.1 blocks in a career-high 25.3 minutes per game for the Knicks. He's one of just five NBA players to total more than 80 blocks and 80 steals this past season.

Hartenstein didn't begin the year as a starter, but the Knicks compounding injuries gave him the opportunity. Mitchell Robinson fractured his ankle in mid-December, and Hartenstein took over for essentially the rest of the season.

Full story here.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski is reporting that center Jalen Smith is joining the Chicago Bulls on a three-year, $27 million deal.

Smith, 24, spent parts of the last three seasons with the Indiana Pacers. In 61 games last season he averaged 9.9 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1 assists in a little over 17 minutes per game.

Smith declined his $5.4 million player option, making him an unrestricted free agent. He served as Myles Turner's backup and was second behind Isaiah Jackson in with a 59.2% shooting percentage. He also led the Pacers in 3-point shooting at 42.4%.

The Thunder kept busy after signing Aaron Wiggins to a new deal by keeping Isaiah Joe on board with a new four-year, $48 million contract, according to The Athetic's Shams Charania .

Like Wiggins, Joe's $2.1 million team option was declined but both sides were open to working out a new deal.

Joe, who joined the Thunder in 2022 after being waived by the Philadelphia 76ers, averaged 8.2 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 78 games in 2023-24. He shot a career-bests from three-point range (41.6%) and from the floor (45.8%).
