Prince Review: Silly, But Funny
Movie: Prince Rating: 2.75/5 Banner: Sree Venkateswara Cinemas LLP Cast: Sivakarthikeyan, Maria Riaboshapka, Sathyaraj, and others Story: Anudeep KV & Mohan Sato Music: Thaman S Cinematography: Manoj Paramahamsa Editor: Praveen KL Producers: Suniel Narang, D.SureshBabu, Puskur Ram Mohan Rao Release Date: October 21, 2022
Ever since “Prince” was announced, the film generated hype as it marks the combination of Tamil rising star Sivakarthikeyan and “JathiRatnalu” fame Anudeep. The bilingual hit the theaters today in Telugu and Tamil simultaneously.
Let’s find out whether Anudeep generates laughs again.
Story: Anand (Sivakarthikeyan) works as a teacher in school. His father Vishwanatham (Sathyaraj, a retired employee, wants his children to marry outside their caste or religion.
Vishwanatham is overjoyed when he finds his son fell in love with a foreigner Jessica (Maria), an English teacher in his son’s school.
The only problem is that Vishwanatham hates British people and Jessica turns out to be a British woman.
How will Anand resolve this issue and get married to Jessica?
Artistes’ Performances: Sivakarthikeyan became a huge star in the Tamil film industry with a series of hits like “Doctor” and “Don” and he is good at comedy. The role of Anand is in his zone. He pulls it off so easily.
Ukrainian actress Maria Riaboshapka suits perfectly. Sathyaraj is a huge asset to this film. He takes the responsibility of the main comedian. The film doesn’t have separate comedians. The comedy parts are taken care of by Sivakarthikeyan and Sathyaraj.
Premgi Amaren as a land grabber is neat. The film has only Tamil actors.
Technical Excellence: Thaman has given a peppy soundtrack. Two songs stand out – “Jessica Chilaka” and “‘Bimbilikki Pilapi”. The visuals are bright and colorful.
The film has a short running time but it gives a feel of a lengthy film due to its flimsy plotline.
Highlights: Anudeep’s mark dialogues The first half The climax comedy
Drawback: No emotional connect Repetitive jokes
Analysis Sathyaraj plays a character who boasts of himself as a very knowledgeable person. He tells his son’s girlfriend that he has mastery over the Telugu language. Around the same time, his son’s phone rings and the ring tone is “Lusku Tapa Lasku Tapa” song. She asks what that means. The funniness of this situation cannot be described in words. Only one would get it while watching. Then there is a five-minute comedy scene about “Bottle gourd” aka sorakaya. After this another worth mentioning scene is of the police station with Anand Raj and the friends of Shiva Karthikeyan. These are three sequences in “Prince" which make the audience laugh.
Anudeep has a peculiar style of comedy writing. His situations look silly but they work well if the actors can pull them off. Sivakarthikeyan and Sathyaraj have done their best in many places.
The comedy written here is for an educated A center audience. This cannot be relished by the C-center audience who doesn't know about bottle gourd and Cambridge. Such viewers may miss the taste in funny single liners.
Moreover, nativity is totally missing in the film with Tamil actors all over. There should have been a mix of Telugu audience like in pan India style films. Had that been done, the range of the film would have gone to the next level. Barring that limitation, everything goes well.
Anudeep ends his films well. In “Prince”, too, it ended on a funny note. All said, “Prince” is neither a laughing riot nor a boring watch. It lands somewhere in between. Like Anudeep’s previous movie, it is silly but offers some decent comedy portions.
Bottom line: Works in parts

Prince Movie Review: Sivakarthikeyan and Anudeep's madcap flick offers sporadic laughs
Director anudeep's prince is a madcap comedy that relies on silliness. the slapstick comedy worked in some places, but fell flat in others, says our review..
Listen to Story
- Prince hit the theatres on October 21 ahead of Diwali.
- The comedy film is directed by Anudeep.
- Prince features Sivakarthikeyan, Sathyaraj and Maria Ryaboshapka.
Release Date: 21 Oct, 2022
Sivakarthikeyan started his career as a stand-up comedian and rose to prominence with his witty one-liners. Today, he is a bankable star in the Tamil industry, who has several hit films under his sleeve. When a star like Sivakarthikeyen joins hands with Telugu filmmaker Anudeep, who is known for his slapstick humour, you expect fireworks on screen. Did their film, Prince, offer that?
Anbu (Sivakarthikeyan) is being ostracized by the village for a ‘mistake.’ His father Ulaganathan (Sathyaraj) also agrees with the villagers and gets ready to disown his son. Now comes the flashback. Anbu, who is irregular as a school teacher, goes to school regularly because of a British woman, Jessica (Maria Ryaboshapka). She joins the institution as a teacher. He eventually falls in love with her. While he thinks his father will say yes to their marriage, he says no for a reason. Ulaganathan’s father died in the freedom fight against the Britishers. How will Anbu convince his father and his father-in-law forms the story.
Anudeep’s strength lies in slapstick humour. With the films he has directed, he has established his style of humour which rides on silliness. And Prince is no exception. The film establishes several silly moments and tries to milk humour out of them. Imagine an entire stretch of comedy, just a ‘bottle guard’ that the heroine, Jessica, asks.
Prince, however, offers only sporadic laughs. This madcap film makes you laugh out loud in places but also falls flat on its face several times. Not all one-liners and jokes landed well. The first half of Prince borrowed a lot of the audience’s time to take off. One can handpick moments from the film where the comedy worked. Be it the Anandraj police station scene or the climax stretch about humanity, you see Sivakarthikeyan in full form. Even Sathyaraj is exceptional as the quirky father. Their combination scenes, especially the scene where he’s asked the meaning of Gummuratappura, are funny.
Also, Prince is a self-aware film. The director and the actors make fun of themselves and their previous works and it’s done supportively. That said, the major grouse with Prince are the stretches where the comedy fails to evoke laughs.
Here's the trailer of Prince:
Sivakarthikeyan is in his prime form as Anbu in Prince. His expressions and one-liners are perfect for the situation. And we can literally see the real Sivakarthikeyan playing to his strength on screen. Sathyaraj, as a veteran, explores comedy to a large extent in this film. Maria did a fair job in her debut performance. The real surprise is Premgi Amaren who played the role of land-grabbing mafia head, Boopathy. The audiences are so used to seeing Premgi Amaren in a fun role and to see him playing a serious (to some extent) was a new experience altogether.
Thaman’s music, especially Bimbiiki Pilapi and Jessica, are picturised well by Manoj Paramahamsa. Extra points for Sivakarthikeyan and Maria’s energetic dance moves.
Prince is a madcap comedy that tries to make the audience laugh throughout its runtime. But, you get only occasional laughs in the latter half.

Jathi Ratnalu fame Anudeep is back with a quirky comedy. This time he collaborated with Siva Karthikeyan and made it on large scale in Telugu-Tamil as bilingual. Did Siva Karthikeyan and Anudeep recreate the magic of Jathi Ratnalu and Varun Doctor? Did the duo live upto the expectations? Let’s find out.
Anand (Siva Karthikeyan) works as a social teacher in a small town. He falls for British girl Jessica (Maria Ryaboshapaka) who is his colleague. Anand’s father (Sathyaraj), who is a broad natured, unable to accept Jessica owing to her British nationality since his grandfather was killed by British. Jessica’s father turns against her love for his own reasons. Meanwhile, Jessica’s family land in the town is wanted by local Bhupathi this invites big troubles and leads to disturbances in their love story. How does Anand resolves it and wins Jessica forms the crux of the story.
Performances
Siva Karthikeyan is game for comedy. He does it again effortlessly. He slips into the role of Anand which is likely by youth and also has good principles. His comic persona drives the film forward. Jessica is good in emotional scenes. Sathyaraj does an impactful performance in a soft role. He generates fun. All the cast plays their parts well. The film intentionally has more Tamil actors which may affect the Telugu nativity.
Technicalities
Anudeep picked a wafer-thin plot which itself is quirky and comical. But he added his trademark comedy to make it even more hilarious. Visuals are refreshing, credit goes to cinematographer Manoj Paramahamsa. Thaman, who is of late catering thumping background score and loud music, impresses with feel-good and soothing music.
Siva Karthikeyan Laugh Moments Dialogues & Music
Hero-Heroine Love Track Logics Goes For Toss
Audiences are still not out of pandemic fatigue which is why there is good scope for comedy films to work miraculously well at the ticket windows. Relying on the same, Anudeep, who is fresh from heat of Jathi Ratnalu success, attempted the similar feat. He is successful largely. He caters to fun-loving masses with irreverent humour. Siva Karthikeyan adds his touch to it.
Simply put, Prince is Jathi Ratnalu version 2.0 with different scale, set-up. It has all the elements to work. But the problem is it underscores on logics. The film delivers nonsensical laughs throughout. Siva Karthikeyan goes on delivering lengthy speeches reminding us of courtroom scene in Jathi Ratnalu. Yet, it worked. It keeps viewers in splits.
Kudos to Anudeep. Inanities all over the film. Even the supporting cast and side cast keep uttering inane lines generating fun. It is the humour quotient that keeps us invested in the film. The dominance of Tamil cast may affect the Telugu nativity and sensibilities. Dialogues deserve special mention as they bring cheer immediately. The makers rely on dialogue-humour. The hero-heroine love track needs more attention. It has no emotional connect.
Overall, the film has its moments. It only runs on laughs with no logics. Go for it if you want to keep your brains at home and enjoy the laugh ride in cinemas. It may not be another Jathi Ratnalu but Prince is Prince ( in Anudeep’s words).
Bottom line: All Laughs, No Logics!
Rating: 2.75/5

Prince movie review: A partly effective spoof or a juvenile joke?
Prince is a mixed bag. For those who enjoy the grand comic set-up with momentary payoff, for those who have the patience to relate with such elaborate set up, it is an enjoyable entertainer.
Language: Tamil
Cast: Sivakarthikeyan, Maria Ryaboshapka, Sathyaraj
Director: Anudeep KV
Star rating: 2/5
After Sivakarthikeyanâs performance in Doctor , fans are left with high expectations. So when Prince was touted by the filmmakers to be a no-holds-barred comedy, many expected magic. This genre, in a way, is Sivakarthikeyanâs playing field. Yet, something went horribly wrong with Prince because the laughs were just not enough. From the very beginning, I had this sinking feeling with the dialogues as it did not land in many occasions. The film itself is a romantic comedy about a young Tamil man falling in love with a British girl settled in India. His father is a communist who pushes his children to marry out of caste, but he is also a nationalist who has a special place in his heart just to hate on the newer generations of Britishers for the sins of their ancestors.
So, Prince attempts to dig deeper by drawing in the ill feelings that certain sections of Indians have towards a country and the country persons that enslaved them. Can something as sensitive and serious as reparation for enslavement and racism really be used as fodder for something that is shallow from the very outset? It is only much later that the film sets itself up as a spoof. Especially the confrontation between Anbu and his father about his love for an English girl hints at the direction that the film wants to take. When Jessica says, âWe gave you the railways, educationâŠâ and ends it by saying, âWe even gave you freedom,â it strikes a nerve. This is the stand that white supremacists and people with saviour complex have repeatedly said when asked about reparation for the actions of their ancestors. A similar belief is also held by a huge section of upper caste community in India. They believe that they liberated the Dalit and Adivasi community from being âuncouthâ, âuncivilizedâ, and âunculturedâ. So they try to erase the oppression. However, the potential of this scene is visible only fleetingly. The comic expression on Sathyaraj âs face is the only evidence of this potential.
This flaw in the screenplay sabotages the film to a great extent. So, the jokes that were promised in the film is juvenile and the payoff for any comedic set-up is too late too little. Take, for instance, the moment when the white girlfriend wants to buy bottle gourd! The fact that Anbu, the hero of this tale doesnât know that Sorakkai is bottle gourd is the beginning of a joke that is too long, with a short payoff. We understand that the male ego doesnât let this young man accept that he doesnât know something that his crush does. He continues to pretend as if he knows what she is talking about. What really is hilarious is that Anbu finds a vegetable seller who wants to continue a facade with his own wife as well. He apparently impressed her with his English while courting her. The amount of world-building that goes into this sketch, even if half of it had been put into building Jessica as a person, or Anbuâs family, the film would have been better of for it.
Instead, it goes round and round in stressing how Anbu has betrayed his village by failing in love with an English girl. It is hilarious how Anbuâs father (Sathyaraj) was accepting of their relationship when he had believed that she was French. A quick note on Indian history and the European forces that occupied the nation at different times, La Compagnie française des Indes Orientales (French East India Company) set up an outpost in Pondicherry â now Puducherry. It is at this point that I began to see the film as a spoof. One that is a commentary on everything that the society today is most obsessed with. From K-drama, and reparation to hypernationalism, the film broaches it all, but ineffectively because of the earlier stated flaw in screenplay.
The huge holes in the screenplay is fixed momentarily with juvenile jokes. Prince would have done much better had it stuck by its conviction to make the dark jokes about society stick. Instead, the flimsy nature of commentary within the film makes the attempt nothing but laughable. Anbu and Jessicaâs love story is not something to root for because all we see of their relationship is song and dance moments. It is so shallow that his own friends end up believing that he is dating her to settle down abroad. Another self-deprecating joke here, I am sure.
This is probably one of the few moments that I did truly enjoy because it feels as if the filmmaker made a self-aware comment regarding how much of Anbuâs intention we were allowed to see. These are thoughts, that one would really begin to form at the end of the film, because at the beginning, all of it seems disconnected and distorted. From a simple tale of a social science teacher falling in love with an English teacher, the film tries to build many layers. However, not one of them is portrayed with clarity. Even the dad jokes in the film come off as juvenile, but not juvenile enough to be enjoyed. It occupies this weird space in the joke world where the lines just travel above your head and flats flat on its face.
So Prince is a mixed bag. For those who enjoy the grand comic set-up with momentary payoff, for those who have the patience to relate with such elaborate set up, it is an enjoyable entertainer. Otherwise, it is a missed opportunity.

Prince Movie Review: A reasonably effective mindless comedy
Rating: ( 2.5 / 5).
Remember Mirchi Shiva's intro scene in Thamizh Padam 2 where he goes on a monologue about many things random? Did it make you laugh? Or did it make you roll your eyes? If it worked for you, you are in for a ride with Prince , which is a marathon of such humour. Is it unfair to judge a film based on the efficiency of one element? Perhaps not, considering this is the main takeaway of this film.
Director: Anudeep KV Cast: Sivakarthikeyan, Maria Riaboshapka, Sathyaraj
The humour won't come across as a shocker to those who have watched Anudeep's sophomore feature, Jathi Ratnalu . Be it the naivete in romance, the over-enthusiastic body language, or even the floral print shirts, it is hard not to notice similarities between Sivakarthikeyan's Anbu and Naveen Polisehetty's Jogipet Srikanth.
The plot of Prince is generic and predictable. A Tamil boy from a family of British haters falls in love with a... Britisher! And naturally, a series of crazy events prevent them from getting together. Another film with a story like this--and an uninspiring screenplay--might have sunk without trace, but he tremendous focus on nonsensical humour keeps Prince afloat.
The non-stop jokes, however, don't always land as intended. A number of attempts do fall flat but not so much that the good parts get affected. When Sathyaraj's wife anxiously asks him, "Ungalukku enna dhaan venum?" , he replies, "Nee inga irundhu ponum!" Whenever the film shifts to this rhyme zone, the jokes fail. But a few minutes into the film, I became kinder, as the outlandish portions are brilliant. A case in point is the whole sequence involving a bottle gourd.
For 'mokkai' comedy to work, listeners must get used to context and the identity of the person cracking the jokes. This is why inside jokes among friends work, and why it feels absurd for outsiders. It also helps when celebrated stars (Sivakarthikeyan and Sathyaraj) are cast humour. I really doubt if Prince would have been as efficient if not for these two actors. But sadly, the same can't be said about the rest. Even though Maria gets the lip-sync game almost right, her performance feels right out of a highschool drama. Premgi Amaren, in a non-Venkat Prabhu film, once again doesn't work.
As long as the gags keep coming, we remain distracted from the criminally under-written screenplay and lacklustre staging. But the flaws become extremely glaring when the film focusses, for instance, on the romance. The story is stagnant, and interesting angles--like Jessica (Maria) asking Anbu why he falls for her--are not explored well.
Anudeep cleverly saves the best humour for the last act. The extended farewell speech of Anbu revives the film from a painful second act. Without giving away much, this last speech of Prince is absurdity in its most tasteful form.
The title Prince doesn't bear much relevance to the actual film, except as a tribute to its star actor. Had Anudeep stuck to just mindless fun, without getting distracted by angles like the bland romance, this Prince might have won everyone's heart.

Kollywood actor Sivakarthikeyan’s Prince has been creating a good buzz for many days. The bilingual film finally hit the screens today. Let’s check how the movie is.
Anand (Sivakarthikeyan), a school teacher, falls in love with his colleague Jessica (Maria Ryaboshapka), a British girl at first sight. But, his father Vishwanath (Sathyaraj) opposes their love because of a strong reason and the villagers decide to ostracise Anand from the village. Why Vishwanath didn’t accept his son’s love? Why the entire village wanted Anand to leave the place? What happened next? This forms the story.
Plus Points
This is the immediate film of Sivakarthikeyan after scoring two back-to-back hits – Doctor and Don. Known for his comedy, Sivakarthikeyan suits the character very well and as expected he impresses audiences with his finest performance throughout the film.
Ukraine beauty Maria Ryaboshapka looks beautiful and she justifies her character. Though the beauty has nothing much to perform, she gives her best.
Sathyaraj as Vishwanath steals the entire show. His comedy timing and innocence worked out very well and he is a big relief. The remaining actors like Premgi and Anandraj are okay.
Minus Points
In general, people have huge expectations for the next film of a director who scores a massive hit like Jathi Ratnalu. Director Anudeep KV believes in the same old formula – comedy. He tried to repeat the magic in Prince but somehow he failed to recreate it.
The comedy and witty one-liners are good to enjoy, at times and some scenes failed to evoke laughter. Besides, Anudeep comes up with a weak storyline.
To note, Jathi Ratnalu was enjoyed by many because of the perfect cast and the situations at the release time. Having Sivakarthikeyan as the protagonist, Anudeep should have written a strong story with neat comedy. But, Anudeep fails to amuse with his third venture, Prince.
Technical Aspects
Anudeep succeeded in making the film look rich and neat but failed as a writer. Some comedy dialogues, especially those written for Sathyaraj are okay to smile at. Music by Thaman, cinematography by Manoj Paramahamsa and the production values are neat. Editing is also fine.
On the whole, Prince is a passable comedy film. Sivakarthikeyan delivers his best but the film lacks the punch because of its weak storyline. Sathyaraj’s performance stands out in the film. A few comedy scenes are enjoyable, especially in the first half and the climax. You can give it a watch this weekend if you are okay with illogical comedy punches.

Prince Review: A Low Risk, Low Rewards Comedy With Moments Of Inspired âMokkaiâ
Director: Anudeep KV
Cast: Sivakarthikeyan , Maria Ryaboshapka, Sathyaraj
It might be a long shot to call Anudeep KVâs Jathi Ratnalu a comedy classic, but it had several inventive stretches where it married clever comic writing with a bucketload of pristine randomness. Which other word can you use to describe a film made with so much conviction that they believed they could pull off a five-minute-long gag where its protagonists discuss nothing else apart from the first man in their village to wear a âjeans pantâ? Parts of Sivakarthikeyanâs Prince borrows generously from the same part of Anudeepâs brain that seeks poetry in the inane. Get a load of a similar stretch in Prince in which an entire sketch revolves around the Tamil word for bottle gourd. You know where theyâre going with this idea, but Anudeep stretches this so far that itâs almost bizarre how sure he is of it.
Itâs this sort of manic conviction that makes Prince tolerable, even when nothingâs going for it. Its entire screenplay could fit in the back of a chewing gum wrapper and itâs never really a screenplay as much as itâs an excuse to cue in the next comedic sketch. You might think this is hyperbolic, but trust me when I tell you that its biggest conflict arrives with a central character mistaking Cambridge for a city in France. Itâs the kind of film that never takes itself seriously and in its subservience to that philosophy, it makes you feel like a fool for expecting coherence, finish or sense.
Sense, for instance, is so far removed from the world of Prince that the combined IQ of all the main characters is still in the low single digit. Not that thatâs necessarily a bad thing. Our defences are always down and you can consistently catch yourself laughing for one liners and setups that are embarrassingly silly. Which is why it feels so organic when you finally have a Tamil movie patriarch (an excellent Sathyaraj) who is actually heartbroken when his daughter elopes with someone from the same caste.
This is also in line with Prince 's central message, which prioritises humanity over caste, religion or regional boundaries. But who are we kidding with this message when the film uses it as an excuse to pack in as many jokes about all nationalities as it can? So when the filmâs big climactic speech is being made to advocate a world without borders, the makers can also slip in a joke about women describing the beauty of the borders of their respective sarees. All of this is truly absurd and can only be thought off by a person for whom laughter is both the journey and destination.
This also means that youâre simultaneously cherry picking at what jokes land and what donât. Some, like a longish stretch involving Soori, is a glorious mess that comes from a very calculative approach for a gloriously random film. Another longish sketch involving Anbu (Sivakarthikeyan) and his three buddies fall flat when theyâre trying to force the jokes rather than let it land it peace. You find the same kind of annoying overthinking in the way the songs have been placed as well. Not only do these dance numbers stick out when youâre simply waiting for the next big joke, but you can also sense how theyâre being pushed into the film because it kinda, sorta has become a big selling point for its hero.
But even this kind of strategy isnât something you can blame the hero for in other portions. Sivakarthikeyan stars in perhaps his least heroic film after hitting superstardom, and heâs able to maintain the filmâs funny-or-die attitude even through awkward romantic stretches and the slightly less awkward emotional scenes. Adding that he also doesnât need a sidekick to keep the jokes flowing, you can also see how heâs able to distract us from the severe ineptitude of the foreign actors (the Tamil they speak is insufferable). With its clunky making and questionable production values, thereâs nothing in terms of cinematic quality in Prince . Despite this sketch comedy-like polish and the many jokes that go nowhere, Prince is still very watchable. But if youâve got a place in your heart for some old fashioned "mokkai", youâre likely to leave without worrying too much about how much your standards have fallen.

'Prince' review: Laughter not guaranteed
Every dialogue in this movie that is intended to be funny is absurd and silly
Prince  is the love story of a school teacher who falls for a British girl, Jessica, (played by Maria Ryaboshapka) filled with comedy of errors. Anbu (Sivakarthikeyan) lives in a village, where everyone is simple and have an irreverent sense of humour, near Pondicherry.Â
Prince  movie plot begins with Anbuâs voice-over, introducing his father Ulaganathan (Sathyaraj). The film starts off promising to be a laugh riot, but as it moves forward, every dialogue that is intended to be funny is absurd and silly.Â
Once Anbu accompanies Jessica to a vegetable shop, run by a couple. At the shop, the wife of the vegetable vendor claims that she married him because she fell for his English. When Jessica asks for a bottle gourd, both the shop owner and Anbu do not know what it is. The two struggle to save their face. Then comes one Anbu's students who also doesn't know what bottle gourd is. The entire film is filled with such silly jokes.
And then there is Sathyaraj's Ulaganathan, the grandson of a freedom fighter. He is a man of principles, who wants his son to marry outside caste and religion, but not a Brit girl because his grandfather was killed by the British. He doesnât have any role in his village but hoists the national flag on Independence Day and Republic Day. His son, a social science teacher, does not know about the World War, Hitler or Charlie Chaplin. It is his British girlfriend who introduces him to Chaplin.
The villain, Bhoopathy (played by Premgi Amaran), fails to impress.Â
In the end, Prince talks about humanity and patriotism. But even here if you expect a story or a decent sequence to know what actually the story is, the director disappoints you. Prince  director Anudeep, could have thought for a moment that Jathi Ratnalu could have done well in Tollywood, but he somehow chose to give the Kollywood audience a film without a story and a hero without any goals in his life.Â
Sivakarthikeyan looks good as always, and the audience could not be faulted for expecting from him something like his earlier Varuthapadatha Vaalibar Sangam  or Namma Veetu Pillai . But the actor fails to deliver the laughs that Prince  promised.
It is also time that popular actors like Sivakarthikeyan stops normalising stalking in films in the name of comedy.Â
Prince cast: Siva Karthikeyan, Sathyaraj, Maria Ryaboshapka and Premgi Amaren.Â
Prince director: Anudeep KV.Â

Prince Movie Review (2022)
Anudeep kv's 'prince', with sivakarthikeyan and maria ryaboshapka, applies the 'jathi ratnalu' formula to a love story and falls flat.
Prince Movie Cast & Crew
Anudeep KV's USP is silliness. In Jathi Ratnalu , he roped in three actors: Naveen Polishetty, Priyadarshi and Rahul Ramakrishna. And he used these actors as punching bags for his brand of brilliantly nonsensical one-liners. I took some time to warm up to the film, but once I got on its wavelength, it became a blast. Anudeep treats silly situations in a silly way. He also treats serious situations in a silly way. Even when we think we are in for major melodrama, he keeps undercutting the mood with humour. He goes for the same approach in Prince , but this time, it doesn't work. Why? The first reason may be Sivakarthikeyan. This is right up the actor's zone and he is excellent, but he is also too big a star. This film may have worked for him before Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga , but today, after his rapid ascent to the top, we expect something a little⊠substantial, something big-screen worthy.
That, sadly, happens only during the songs by Thaman, which are grandly staged. Otherwise, the film is an oddly small, TV-level affair. (Again, with a smaller actor at the centre, it might not have seemed so small.) And we come to the second reason Prince doesn't work. In Jathi Ratnalu , Anudeep's anything-goes sensibility was a perfect fit for an anything-goes story. Here, the story is actually about something â or many things. It's about the irrelevance of caste and borders between countries. It's about the importance of humanity, which is possibly why the Sivakarthikeyan character is named Anbu. It's about how the British still own Indian soil â or land. And it's about Anbu falling for a Brit named Jessica, and played by Maria Ryaboshapka. This romance is opposed by Anbu's father (Sathyaraj) because of, well, what the Brits did on Indian soil.
What surprised me â and not in a good way â was the earnestness with which Anudeep approaches these issues and messages. In a film with this tonality, who wants to hear (from Jessica) that the British left behind a legacy of good things, too? Who wants a borderline-serious subplot with Premgi Amaren as a shady real-estate dealer? Why inflate the self-importance of a meant-to-be-silly film with key events taking place on January 26 and August 15? Why get all melodramatic with the Sathyaraj character in the second half? Yes, a lot of this is intercut with silly lines â in the spirit of the overall film â but this technique doesn't always work.Â
The stretch with guest star Soori is a bomb. A bit woven around Charlie Chaplin is a bomb. A potential fight scene in a sports bar is a bomb. The flashback with Jessica's grandmother is a serious bomb. The strange characterisation of her father is a bomb. Jessica's "boy bestie" gag is a bomb. At one point, she asks Anbu why he loves her. Good question. The script is too lazy to think up an answer.
Prince is a chain link of missed opportunity after missed opportunity. Even the slapstick fight is not as slapsticky as it should be. I loved the sudden appearance of a cactus plant, but it doesn't do anything as crazy as it sounds. What's not bad? There's a not-bad sequence with Anandraj as a cop. There's a Monty Python-esque stretch (or Goundamani-Senthil-esque strech) about a vegetable. And like in Jathi Ratnalu , the hero gets to make a big, rousing speech that's filled with funny, nonsensical touches. This portion is the only one where the issues and the silliness come together organically, and the tricky mix is beautifully handled by the writing. And I loved the hero-entry scene. You think it's going to be one thing. It cleverly becomes something else â and you can't imagine anyone but Sivakarthikeyan pulling this off. But Prince is proof that likeability on screen is not enough to make a movie.

'Prince' review: A reasonably effective mindless comedy
Remember Mirchi Shivaâs intro scene in Thamizh Padam 2 where he goes on a monologue about many things random? Did it make you laugh? Or did it make you roll your eyes? If it worked for you, you are in for a ride with Prince, which is a marathon of such humour. Is it unfair to judge a film based on the efficiency of one element? Perhaps not, considering this is the main takeaway of this film.
The humour wonât come across as a shocker to those who have watched Anudeepâs debut Jathi Ratnalu. Be it the naivete in romance, the overenthusiastic body language, or even the floral print shirts, it is hard not to notice similarities between Sivakarthikeyanâs Anbu and Naveen Polisehettyâs Jogipet Srikanth.
The non-stop jokes, however, donât always land as intended.
A number of attempts do fall flat but not so much that the good parts get affected. When Sathyarajâs wife anxiously asks him, âUngalukku enna dhaan venum?â, he replies, âNee inga irundhu ponum!â Whenever the film shifts to this rhyme zone, the jokes fail. But a few minutes into the film, I became kinder, as the outlandish portions are brilliant.
A case in point is the whole sequence involving a bottle gourd. For âmokkaiâ comedy to work, listeners must get used to context and the identity of the person cracking the jokes. This is why inside jokes among friends work, and why it feels absurd for outsiders. It also helps when celebrated stars (Sivakarthikeyan and Sathyaraj) who are known for their humour are cast.
I really doubt if Prince would have been as efficient if not for these two actors. But sadly, the same canât be said about the rest. Even though Maria gets the lip-sync game almost right, her performance feels right out of a highschool drama. Premgi Amaren, in a non- Venkat Prabhu film, once again doesnât work. As long as the gags keep coming, we remain distracted from the criminally underwritten screenplay and lacklustre staging. But the flaws become extremely glaring when the film focusses, for instance, on the romance.
ALSO READ | 'The success of Prince will foster more Tamil-Telugu collaborations': Sivakarthikeyan
The story is stagnant, and interesting anglesâ like Jessica (Maria) asking Anbu why he falls for herâare not explored well. Anudeep cleverly saves the best humour for the last act. The extended farewell speech of Anbu revives the film from a painful second act. Without giving away much, this last speech of Prince is absurdity in its most tasteful form.
The title Prince doesnât bear much relevance to the actual film, except as a tribute to its star actor. Had Anudeep stuck to just mindless fun, without getting distracted by angles like the bland romance, this Prince might have won everyoneâs heart.

Frankie Corio and Paul Mescal in a scene from the film 'Aftersun.'
Aftersun âa timeless exploration of memory, of unyielding depression, of the complex meeting between our past and present as we struggle to evolveâhas finally made its way to Netflix . Widely acclaimed as one of the best films of 2022, this poignant A24 narrative (that owns one of the best soundtracks in recent memory) from writer-director Charlotte Wells delves deep into the heart of a father-daughter relationship strained by years and years of unspoken sorrows and unacknowledged pain. Akin to A24âs other most dazzling feature of the 2020s, Past Lives , the film finds our protagonist at a crossroads as a young adult after being forced to reckon with a precarious, fragmented past.
Aftersun revolves around Sophie, a woman reflecting on a summer vacation she spent with her father, Calum, in Turkey. As Sophie (as an adult, played by Celia Rowlson-Hall; as a child, played by Frankie Corio) revisits the video footage and memories of their trip, she grapples with the painful realization that her father hid his depression from her and the rest of the world for many years. During the course of their vacation, Calum (Paul Mescal) puts on a content face, attempting to hide the inner turmoil that plagues him daily. We are painfully aware of his waywardness, while young Sophie remains oblivious to just how broken he feels. It is only through the lens (an important word for a film that uses a camera as its most powerful motif) of adulthood that Sophie begins to understand the signs of her fatherâs struggle. (If youâd like more insight into the deeper themes and meaning of Aftersun , then check out this thorough breakdown .)
You would never know this is Wellsâ directorial debut for a feature film, as she masterfully balances the love between father and daughter with the unspoken emotional chasm that divides them, perfectly capturing the static, impenetrable tension at the heart of their relationship. The film delves into the dual nature of depression: the sufferer, Calum, who cannot express his pain, especially to the closest people in his life, and the loved one, Sophie, who may sense the disarray but is powerless to help, is too young to understand. This delicate dynamic is portrayed with haunting authenticity (Wells referred to the film as âemotionally autobiographical), especially once youâre on the other side of depression, when the battle has already been lost. In effect, Aftersun , perhaps more than any other film released in the 21st century, painfully reflects the real-life challenge of dealing with a loved one's mental health struggles.
This unbelievably vibrant, undeniably tragic, yet ultimately insightful, illuminating, encouraging story is further enriched by how Wells crafts her tale visually. The expansive Turkish landscapes serve as a backdrop to the characters' mental journeys (with motifs such as distant hang gliders and the foreboding sea constantly commenting on the charactersâ states of being), mirroring their sense of isolation and longing for connection. Wellsâ minimalist yet constricting aesthetic evokes a disorienting sense of limbo for both wavering father and naive daughter, as thereâs a painful strain on their vacation that unknowingly becomes the final moments theyâll spend together. The reflection on this short, cherished time together painfully becomes more and more distant and confusing as the years wear on.
Which brings us to the most compelling exploration in Aftersun that should apply to anyone who struggles with pieces of their past: memory. Sophieâs recollections of that final vacation together, captured through photographs and video footage achingly revisited throughout the film but relayed in narrative form only through her memory of the events, offer a fragmented yet altogether intimate glimpse into Calumâs troubled state from a daughterâs point of view. The film poignantly illustrates how memories, while comforting, are also distressingly limited. Photographs only offer just that: an image. And a video recording provides a fixed perspective; what we chose to capture and at what angle we chose to capture it. Whatâs missing are all of the machinations of humankind, all of the complex, unspoken avenues between people, all of the neuronal pathways that make our emotions seemingly impossible to communicate, to even understand in the first place. Sophieâs recollections of a vacation secretly plagued by desolation and despair, of a man she desperately seeks to understand, are mere representations of a reality she does not comprehend, leaving Sophie to grapple with the elusive truth behind her fatherâs actions, the ambiguous impact itâs had on her life.

The movieâs climax beautifully intertwines reality and imaginationâthe irrefutable truth and how we mentally deal with the truthâa hazy yet striking juxtaposition of two scenes that offer perspective on the perilous divide between past and present: young Sophie dancing with her father in a moment of pure, unadulterated ecstasy, and an older Sophie desperately searching for him in a surreal, rave-like setting that haunts her dreams. This powerful sequence, underscored by the most perfect musical use of Queen and David Bowieâs song âUnder Pressureâ in cinematic history, underscores the devastating gap between what Sophie remembers and what she longs to understandâthis is the tragic beauty that Wells so exquisitely elucidates with her emotionally crippling, philosophically illuminating film.
Now available on Netflix, Aftersun is a must-watch for anyone who has a complicated relationship with their past, who has dealt with depression, either personally or tangentially, who is plagued by the fallibility of memory. The filmâs powerful performances, especially by rising star Paul Mescal, who earned a Best Actor nomination at the Academy Awards, combined with Wellsâ unbelievably assured direction for a first-timer, make it a standout film that will resonate long after the credits roll (and clearly the movieâs impact has lasted through 2024, as the film currently resides on the Lettterboxd Top 250 ). If you havenât seen it yet, or if you just need a reminder, be sure to witness why Aftersun was hailed as the best movie of 2022 by so many.

While unconfirmed, we’re told by multiple sources close to the project that the lead character Parker, played by Haze, is inspired at least in part by Hunter Biden , son of U.S. President Joe Biden, whose abuse of drugs and alcohol is well documented — including in his 2021 memoir Beautiful Things — and who was found guilty Tuesday in Delaware of three felony counts related to the purchase of a gun in 2018. Mamet alluded to his work on such a project a few months ago, in an interview with podcaster Andrew Klavan. “These guys who did Sound of Freedom , they came to me and they said, ‘You want to write a movie for us?’ I said, ‘Yeah sure, what do you got?'” he shared. “They said they wanted to do a movie about Hunter Biden.”
A source close to the filmmakers denied that the project draws inspiration from Biden, stating, “This project has been in the works for a while and, as it currently stands and is led by van Hoy, is a fictional account of fictional events and characters.”
“It’s amazing to work with David Mamet on this wildly original screenplay,” said Van Hoy in a statement to Deadline. “Collaborating with him, Academy Award winners Nicolas Cage and J.K. Simmons, along with Giancarlo Esposito, Andy Garcia, and my dear friend and collaborator Scott Haze, is a dream.”
Best known for roles in the films Child of God and Old Henry , Haze has also appeared in titles like Minari , Thank You for Your Service , and Jurassic World Dominion . Up next, he’ll be seen in Kevin Costner’s multi-part Civil War epic Horizon: An American Saga , which is rolling out its first two installments this summer.
Recently at Cannes with Lorcan Finnegan’s Australia-set thriller The Surfer , Cage will next menace vieerrs in Osgood Perkins’ buzzy horror thriller Longlegs , out via Neon on July 12.
Currently leading AMC’s acclaimed crime drama Parish , and recently announced as joining Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World , Esposito will next be seen starring in Francis Ford Coppola’s much discussed Megalopolis , as well as Ti West’s horror trilogy closer MaXXXine for A24.
Appearing of late in titles like Father of the Bride , The Expendables 4 and Pain Hustlers , Garcia’s upcoming slate includes the 20th heist thriller Eenie Meanie and Taylor Sheridan’s Paramount+ series Landman , among many other projects.
Prior to The Prince , Van Hoy wrote, directed and produced Flinch , a crime thriller starring Daniel Zovatto, Tilda Cobham-Hervey and Cathy Moriarty.
One of America’s most esteemed playwrights and screenwriters, known for such iconic titles as Glengarry Glen Ross , Wag the Dog and American Buffalo , Mamet most recently scripted The Penitent , an indie drama from director Luca Barbareschi. Last year, he put out the play Henry Johnson and memoir titled Everywhere an Oink Oink: An Embittered, Dyspeptic, and Accurate Report of Forty Years in Hollywood .
Haze and Esposito are represented by CAA, Sugar23, and Jackoway Austen Tyerman. Cage is repped by WME, Stride Management, and Patrick Knapp at GGSS&C; Simmons by Gersh; Garcia by CAA and Linden Entertainment; and Van Hoy by Luber Roklin Entertainment.

'The Boys' Season 4 Episode 5 Recap: An Uneasy Alliance and a Devastating Decision
'that '90s show' season 2 review: it's good to be back hanging out down the street, how is 'the acolyte's stranger able to turn off lightsabers.
This review was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the series being covered here wouldn't exist.
The Dragon Prince has returned to Netflix with the next chapter in its "Mystery of Aaravos" arc, bringing with it an introduction to the Ocean Arcanum and a whole host of new obstacles our heroes have to conquer before the titular Startouch elf unleashes havoc upon the world. Season 5 of the Emmy-winning animated series picks up relatively soon after the events of Season 4, with Callum ( Jack DeSena ), Rayla ( Paula Burrows ), Ezran ( Sasha Rojen ), and Soren ( Jesse Inocalla ) racing to find a way to Aaravos’ ( Erik Dellums ) prison before Claudia ( Racquel Belmonte ) and Terry ( Benjamin Callins ), who have unfortunately acquired the map to its location and intend to free the Startouch elf in order to save Viren’s ( Jason Simpson ) life.
Season 4 opened with a controversial two-year time jump , a risky creative decision that didn’t quite work in the series’ favor, especially after a long three-year wait following the Season 3 premiere. As with most of the other seasons of The Dragon Prince — except for perhaps Season 3, which seemed to finally nail the balance of exposition and payoff — Season 4 struggled to gain momentum. With such a massive magical world, there’s seemingly endless potential for worldbuilding in The Dragon Prince series. But with only nine episodes, 30 minutes apiece, the worldbuilding often comes at the expense of the main storyline. Season 4 fell victim once again to this problem, leaving viewers with a lackluster season that barely explored the mystery of Aaravos, despite it being the new title of the series' current arc.
The saving grace for Season 4 of The Dragon Prince was the hope that all of that exposition was setting up an eventful Season 5 that would finally give the mystery of Aaravos the careful attention and time it deserves and provide answers to the many unanswered questions that Season 4 left behind . Unfortunately, this is not the case.

‘The Dragon Prince’ Season 5 Still Hasn’t Fixed the Series’ Biggest Problem
Following the events of the Season 4 finale, all the pieces are in place for Aaravos’ storyline to truly come to fruition. Claudia and Terry have the map to the Starelf’s prison, the key to Viren's permanent resurrection , and Team Ezran is hot on their heels, desperately having to change course after failing to get find the elf's location first. In short, Aaravos’ spotlight is primed and ready. Instead, however, Season 5 of The Dragon Prince continues to follow its frustrating pattern.
Unfortunately, Season 5 is largely meandering, devoting more time to side quests and worldbuilding than to the mystery of Aaravos, beginning first with the continuing Sunelf storyline from Season 4 — a side plot that took up an inordinate amount of time without quite adding anything particularly interesting to the story. With Season 5, there is an attempt to render the storyline between Karim ( Luc Roderique ) and Sunfire Elf Queen Janai ( Rena Anakwe ) more engaging — but while the political significance of a human and elf settlement is certainly important, there’s still not enough time dedicated to this storyline for it to feel important. It doesn’t help that it still doesn’t quite connect to the main storyline, and while it’s clear the series intends to bridge the gap between these two arcs, two seasons is too long to spend so much time with the Sunfire elves without an inclination as to why they’re so important. There is at least the saving grace that Amaya is one of The Dragon Prince ’s best side characters, and her relationship with Janai is one of the most tender pairings in the series. But they aren’t quite compelling enough on their own, and you can’t help but wish they were with the main crew, racing to beat Claudia to Aaravos’ prison before she unleashes an unspeakable evil upon the world.
As for our main players, Rayla, Callum, Ezran, Soren, Bait, and Zym are embarking on their journey to catch up to Claudia, but as always, find themselves sucked into side quests. And while there have certainly been times in past seasons where side quests can be entertaining, that’s not quite the case here, particularly when the crew spends a handful of episodes with a new villain who ultimately serves no purpose besides derailing their journey to Aaravos’ prison. A typical season of The Dragon Prince often spends its time meandering before ending with a bang in the last two or three episodes, but even the finale of Season 5 is strangely unsatisfying. Aaravos’ storyline is once again rushed in favor of new characters and worldbuilding that could be interesting — if there was time for it. It’s also unusual that in a season deemed “Book 5 - Ocean,” our introduction to the Tidebound elves wastes its time on a one-off villain. It all boils down to the same problem: if The Dragon Prince is going to continue with its nine-episode formula, it simply needs to make better use of its time .
‘The Dragon Prince’ Season 5 Is Best When It Remembers Its Most Compelling Characters
All of this aside, The Dragon Prince still boasts one of the most compelling casts of characters in a fantasy series. With Aaron Ehasz , head writer of Avatar: The Last Airbender as a co-creator, that’s certainly no surprise. Although it is not as often as one would hope, the main cast of characters certainly has their moments this season that remind us why The Dragon Prince still stands out as a worthwhile fantasy, even with its consistent pacing issues. Ezran remains the idealistic young king whose bravery and heart are unmatched, and Rayla and Callum are a heartwarming duo who is thankfully no longer estranged (which was a valid criticism from Season 4), but making their way back to each other gradually with a few sweet, subtle moments sprinkled throughout the season. Soren, in particular, has a moment that serves as a reminder that we need so much more of him. Each season throws in a quick reminder that Soren is much more than a handsome goofball — and while these additions are always welcome, they need to be more than a reminder. With his estrangement from his family and his complicated relationship with his father, and now his sister, Soren’s storyline is ripe with potential . Season 5 certainly leans on his comedic ability to lighten the mood, as always, but those rare moments where we see his depth are a welcome addition to the season.
As always, Claudia and her relationship with Viren remains one of the most captivating aspects of The Dragon Prince . Viren in particular is the standout character this season, and that’s certainly no surprise — he’s always had the most potential for a rich storyline, especially since we know so little about his past. This season remedies that slightly, giving us brief but absolutely vital details about Viren’s backstory. The moments we spend with Viren this season are a reminder that The Dragon Prince ’s strengths lie in its refusal to make its characters one-dimensional.
Finally, one of the best — and often cutest — parts of The Dragon Prince is the magical creatures and critters, and Season 5 is no exception. This season opens the door for an extremely compelling storyline with the Dragon Queen, Zubeia ( Nicole Oliver ), which hopefully, future seasons of The Dragon Prince will devote an appropriate amount of attention to. Season 5 also introduces a few more critters, while still making sure to spotlight the ones that are integral to the core group. (Of course, Bait and Zym still reign supreme, both for their cuteness, bravery, and love of jelly tarts.) Season 5 of The Dragon Prince has plenty of potential, but sadly, doesn’t quite stick the landing. Even so, it’s worth the ride — the world remains a visual treat, the characters and relationships are rich, and as always, its cute critters will tug at the heartstrings of even the most frustrated fans.
The Big Picture
- Season 5 of The Dragon Prince continues to struggle with pacing issues and fails to give the mystery of Aaravos the attention it deserves.
- The season focuses too much on side quests and worldbuilding, leaving the main storyline feeling rushed and unsatisfying.
- Despite its flaws, The Dragon Prince still showcases compelling characters and offers a visually captivating world that will keep fans entertained.

Picking up where Season 1 left off, the new season will chronicle the war between two warring factions of the Targaryen family led by King Aegon II and Queen Rhaenyra in the fight for control of Westeros.

Here's what to know about "House of the Dragon" Season 2.

What happened in 'House of the Dragon' Season 1?
Like its "Game of Thrones" predecessor, "House of the Dragon" is adapted from a novel by George R.R. Martin titled "Fire & Blood."
Set 200 years before the events of the hit series "Game of Thrones," the series centers around the plight of the Targaryen family who hold the throne under King Viserys I Targaryen.
The prequel begins with exploring the ascent to the throne and rule of King Viserys, an ancestor of GoT's Daenerys Targaryen, and the conflict he creates by declaring his daughter Rhaenyra next in line to the Iron Throne, breaking the male-only tradition.
In the Season 1 finale, Aemond Targaryen (son of King Viserys and Alicent Hightower) killed Lucerys Velaryon (son of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen), ushering in the "Dance of the Dragons," a civil war that promises to rip the kingdom in two. The all-out war will be fought by the Greens (led by Alicent and King Aegon II) and the Blacks (headed by Rhaenyra and Daemon) and will see other prominent families, like the Starks, Lannisters and Baratheons, getting in on the action.
