American football , version of the sport of football that evolved from English rugby and soccer (association football); it differs from soccer chiefly in allowing players to touch, throw, and carry the ball with their hands, and it differs from rugby in allowing each side to control the ball in alternating possessions. The sport, played with 11 on each side, originated in North America , primarily in the United States , where it eventually became the country’s leading spectator sport. It also developed simultaneously in Canada , where it evolved into a 12-man game, though Canadian football never achieved the great popularity and status of ice hockey there. American football has not been taken up in the rest of the world to the same degree as other American sports such as basketball and baseball . Since the 1980s, however, primarily through the marketing efforts of the National Football League , teams and leagues have been established in Europe , and the game has achieved a degree of international popularity through television. The sport is sometimes called gridiron football because of the vertical yard lines marking the rectangular field.
Football in the United States
The game emerges.
Gridiron football was the creation of elite American universities , a fact that has shaped its distinctive role in American culture and life. After several decades of informal, student-organized games that were tolerated by faculty as an alternative to more destructive rowdiness, the first intercollegiate football game was played on November 6, 1869, in New Brunswick , New Jersey , between in-state rivals Princeton and Rutgers according to rules adapted from those of the London Football Association. This soccer-style game became the dominant form as Columbia, Cornell, Yale , and a few other colleges in the Northeast took up the sport in the early 1870s, and in 1873 representatives from Princeton, Yale, and Rutgers met in New York City to found the Intercollegiate Football Association and to adopt a common code. Conspicuously missing was Harvard , the country’s premier university, whose team insisted on playing the so-called “ Boston Game,” a cross between soccer and rugby. In May 1874, in the second of two matches with McGill University of Montreal (the first was played by the rules of the Boston Game), Harvard’s players were introduced to the rugby game and immediately preferred it to their own. The following year, for Harvard’s first football contest with Yale, representatives of the two schools agreed on “ concessionary rules” that were chiefly Harvard’s. When spectators (including Princeton students) as well as Yale players saw the advantages of the rugby style, the stage was set for a meeting in 1876 of representatives from Harvard, Yale, Princeton , and Columbia to form a new Intercollegiate Football Association based on rugby rules.
(Read Walter Camp’s 1903 Britannica essay on football.)
Harvard made the first breach in rugby rules. Rejecting the traditional manner of putting the ball in play—players from both teams massed about the ball in a “scrummage,” or “scrum,” trying to kick it forward through the mass of players—Harvard opted for “heeling it out,” or kicking the ball backward to a teammate. The further transformation of English rugby into American football came chiefly through the efforts of Walter Camp , who even during his lifetime was known as the “Father of American Football.” As an undergraduate and then a medical student at Yale, Camp played football from 1876 through 1881, but—more important—beginning in 1878, he dominated the rules committee for nearly three crucial decades. Two of Camp’s revisions in particular effectively created the gridiron game. The first, in 1880, further refined Harvard’s initial innovation , abolishing the scrummage altogether in favour of a scrimmage, which awarded possession of the ball to one of the two teams. It was then put in play by heeling it out. (Snapping the ball with the hand became legal in 1890, though snapping with the foot continued as an option until 1913.) The second crucial rule change was necessitated by the first. Camp’s more orderly manner of initiating play did not require the team in possession of the ball to give it up. After Princeton simply held the ball for an entire half in its 1880 and 1881 contests with Yale, both games ending in scoreless ties that bored spectators as much as they frustrated Yale’s players, Camp proposed a rule that a team must advance the ball 5 yards or lose 10 in three downs (plays), or it would be obliged to surrender the ball to the other side. Camp was also responsible for having 11 players on a side, for devising a new scoring system in 1883 with two points for a touchdown, four points for the goal after a touchdown, and five points for a field goal (a field goal became worth three points in 1909, a touchdown six points in 1912), for creating the quarterback position, for marking the field with stripes, and for proposing several other innovations , but it was those two simple rules adopted in 1880 and 1882 that most fundamentally created American football.
After the crucial rule changes, the play of the game was relatively open, featuring long runs and numerous lateral passes, as in rugby. In 1888 Camp proposed that tackling below the waist be legalized, in order to offset the advantage of speedy backs streaking around the ends. The new rule resulted in the rise of mass plays, an offensive strategy that massed players on a single point of the defense, most famously in Harvard’s “ flying wedge” in 1892. This style of play proved so brutal that the game was nearly abolished in the 1890s and early 1900s.

Walter Camp , the “Father of American Football,” played a pivotal role in the late 19th century, introducing defining rules that transformed the game into its recognizable form today.
- 🚀 Rise to Prominence: The NFL’s establishment in the early 20th century and its partnership with television in the mid-20th century catalyzed the sport’s popularity. Iconic players, teams, and the cultural phenomenon of the Super Bowl further solidified its position in American culture.
- 🥇 Noteworthy Growth and Adaptation: Over the decades, American football experienced global expansion, technological advancements, and adaptability to challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic. The league’s continuous evolution and commitment to player safety and fan engagement ensured its lasting influence in global sports.
American Football History Timeline
Walter Camp, often dubbed the “Father of American Football,” began to shape the game during this period. He introduced the line of scrimmage, the downs system, and the scoring scale, setting the groundwork for the modern game.
Camp’s influence was not just limited to rules. He advocated for the forward pass and organized the first college football conferences. By the end of the 1880s, American Football had begun to resemble the game we recognize today.
The early 20th century marked the emergence of professional football teams. In 1920, the American Professional Football Association (APFA) was founded, which two years later became the National Football League (NFL) .
The NFL started modestly but quickly began to overshadow college football in terms of popularity. Pioneers like Jim Thorpe and teams like the Canton Bulldogs marked this era, setting a foundation for the league’s future dominance.
The 1920s were pivotal for the NFL. Teams like the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears were founded. Big names like Red Grange entered the scene, driving massive crowds and popularizing the sport.
This decade also saw the establishment of iconic stadiums, including Lambeau Field and Soldier Field. The league began to consolidate, and the foundation for a professional sporting dynasty was firmly set.
The game continued to evolve, with new rules like the forward pass becoming more integral. Strategies began to shift, with coaches like Paul Brown introducing more complex game plans.
World War II impacted the league as many players enlisted. Despite challenges, the NFL persisted. The 1940s concluded with the merger of the NFL and its rival, the All-America Football Conference (AAFC).
The NFL’s partnership with television in the 1950s was transformative. The 1958 NFL Championship, known as “The Greatest Game Ever Played,” was broadcast nationally, revolutionizing sports broadcasting.
In 1960, the American Football League (AFL) was established, creating competition for the NFL. This led to the Super Bowl’s inception in 1967, following a merger agreement between the two leagues.
The 1970s saw teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Dallas Cowboys dominate. However, controversies like gambling allegations against key players also marred the era.
With Super Bowl broadcasts drawing massive viewership, halftime shows and commercials became cultural touchstones. The Super Bowl rapidly evolved into an unofficial American holiday.
The NFL started hosting games internationally in the late 1980s, notably in London’s Wembley Stadium. This global outreach brought the sport to new audiences worldwide.
Names like Jerry Rice, Joe Montana, and Lawrence Taylor emerged, defining the era. Their legendary plays and moments solidified football’s place in American culture.
Advances in technology improved game analysis and player safety. Concerns about concussions led to rule changes, emphasizing players’ well-being.
Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and Ray Lewis made their marks during this period. Their on-field heroics and record-breaking performances captivated audiences and enriched the league’s legacy.
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 introduced unprecedented challenges. The league had to adapt with limited audiences, rigorous testing protocols, and revised schedules.
With advancements in digital platforms, streaming games and virtual fan engagements became the new norm. The NFL’s adaptability kept it at the forefront of global sports.

WHEN WAS THE FIRST AMERICAN FOOTBALL GAME PLAYED?
American football, also known as gridiron, is a team sport played by two teams of eleven players on a rectangular field with goals at each end. The offense, the team with possession of the ball tries to advance through the field by running with the ball or passing it, while the defense, the team without possession of the ball, aims to stop the advance of the offense and take control of the ball by themselves.
The first american football game was played on November 6, 1869, it was played in New Jersey between two college teams, Rutgers and Princeton, using rules based on the rules of football of the time. A set of rule changes crafted beginning in 1880 by Walter Camp, the "Father of American Football," was the one that has come to our days.
A football match is played between two teams of 11 players each. Playing with more on the field is punishable by a penalty. Teams can substitute any number of their players between downs; this "platoon" system replaced the original system, which had limited substitution rules. Individual players in a football match must be designated with a uniform number between 1 and 99. Although the sport is played almost exclusively by men , women are eligible to play in high school, college, and professional soccer. No women have played in the NFL, but women have played in high school and college football games.
Football matches last a total of 60 minutes in the professional and college game and are divided into two 30-minute halves and four 15-minute quarters. High school football games last 48 minutes with two 24-minute halves and four 12-minute quarters.
There are two main ways offense can move the ball forward: running and passing. On a typical play, the center passes the ball back and between his legs to the quarterback in a process known as a snap. A forward pass can be legally attempted only if the pin is behind the scrimmage line; only one forward pass can be attempted by down.

The National Football League (NFL) is the largest professional American football league in the United States. It was created by eleven teams in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association, changing its name to the American Professional Football League in 1921 to change it once again to the name now in force in 1922. Currently the NFL is made up of 32 franchises established in various Cities and Regions of America.
Competitiveness and constant improvement in personal performance. High School sports in the USA are a basic pillar in education. When exchange students arrive in the United States, they realize that high school sports are a very important part of student life. 90% of students who go to the United States think that young Americans care much more about sports than peers in their own countries. Participating in a sport offered by High School is a perfect way to get to know the American culture and to integrate better and faster. Teammates support students and collaborate to make the daily school experience more positive.

Is it Soccer or Football? Experts Explain the History of the Two Sports
As the U.S. Men's and Women's soccer teams prepare for the Summer Olympics in Paris, a history lesson about association football and gridiron football.
Brits may hate the term “soccer” being kicked around by Americans to refer to their beloved football — but they’re the ones who coined the word in the first place.
And though football means something very different on this side of the Atlantic, the origins of “America’s sport” can be traced back to England, too.
With an international audience preparing to cheer on their national men 's and women's soccer (or football) teams on the big stage of the upcoming Paris Summer Games , here’s a look at how those sports, and what fans call them, evolved the way they did.
How England kicked off both types of football
Variations of the game that would become known as soccer, in some countries at least, can be traced back thousands of years, with similar kicking games being played in ancient China and ancient Greece. Modern football, though, took its biggest step forward 150 years ago.
“If you go back in England and Scotland into the Middle Ages every town and village had their own version of a game where you had two teams and you had to get a ball from one location to another to win — it could be the town square, it could be the river, there were all sorts of ways to do this,” Stefan Szymanski, a professor of sports management at the University of Michigan, told NBC Insider.
RELATED: The Origin Story Behind Every Mascot in Olympics History (PHOTOS)
“Sometimes you used your feet, sometimes you used your hands, sometimes you used violence,” added Szymanski, who co-wrote the books Soccernomics with Simon Kupper and It’s Football, Not Soccer (And Vice Versa) with Silke-Maria Weineck. “People died. It was chaotic. "
So, in 1863, eleven London teams banded together and codified a set of rules for what came to be dubbed, “association football” after the organizing association that presided over it.
The only problem is that the upper-class players of prestigious British universities, Oxford and Cambridge, preferred a different set of rules. A more complicated and physically grueling one in which players could use both their hands and their feet to advance a ball. One which would soon become known as “rugby football.”
“Rugby is considered a rough game played by gentlemen, and football is a gentle game played by ruffians,” said Andrei Markovits, professor emeritus at the University of Michigan and a soccer historian.
In that vacuum, association football became a hit with the working class at the end of the 19 th Century. Popular enough to support the development of professional clubs and leagues across Europe.
It also led to new terminology thanks to the British penchant for shortening words.
“In England at this point, you have association football and rugby football,” explained Szymanski. “And they’re both a mouthful, so if you go down to the pub and you’re talking to your friends and ask, ‘Which version, do you play association football or do you play rugby football?’ That’s a bit much after five pints. It’s much easier to have a shorter version.
“Back in those times, upper middle class British students had a whole thing of contracting words for slang and adding an ‘er’ to the end,” Szymanski continued. “So, rugby association became ‘rugger,’ Breakfast? Call it, ‘brekker.’
“The problem was how do you shorten ‘association football’ in a similar way? They came up with the word, ‘Soccer.’” It stuck.
“In every country in which the term Football denotes a different code from the Association game, as in the United States, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia, the word 'soccer' is used for much of what the world, though not all of it, calls by the name of 'football' or 'futebol' or 'fussball' or any of the many variations of it,” said Markovits.

How did gridiron football become America's favorite sport?
Across the pond, the popularity of both association football and rugby football started catching the attention of the Ivy League students that held their counterparts at Oxford and Cambridge. In that era, the rules were constantly changing between schools and between games.
The first major intercollegiate game of football, a version closer to soccer than rugby, was played between students of Princeton and Rutgers in 1869. Harvard — considered by many, including the students who attended, as the preeminent university in the country — didn’t take to the association football rules.
“Harvard actually refuses to play this game of association football and by virtue of the university’s enormous prestige, it actually impedes soccer’s existence in America,” said Markovits.
Instead, the prestige of the institution helped elevate rugby, or the constantly shifting American version of it. Many sport historians consider the 1874 exhibition games between Harvard and McGill, Canada’s own top university, as the first modern football games.
In the same way that baseball would eventually eclipse cricket, the British-spawned sport that inspired it, an intrinsically American version of rugby would also come to dominate in the United States.
This version of football would become known as either American football or gridiron football nicknamed after the distinctive cooking griddle-like layout of the field with its yard markings.
A Yale graduate named Walter Camp would pioneer rule changes in the 1880s that moved American football to be closer the version that’s played today. The addition of the forward pass in 1906 further helped the popularity of the sport to take off running. Today, 41 percent of Americans consider football their favorite sport.
Why do foreigners hate the word Soccer so much?
In researching his book on the terminology of the game, Szymanski found that the word "soccer" was used interchangeably with “football” in Britain right up until the 1970s.
The 1973 autobiography of legendary Manchester United manager, Sir Alexander Matthew Busby, was even titled Soccer at the Top: My Life in Football .
What likely set the backlash to the word among Busby’s countrymen was the establishment of the North American Soccer League in the United States in that decade. The fledgling league had a nasty habit of poaching some of the most popular British players, including George Best and Bobby Moore. (Not to mention Pele, the best player in the world at the time.)
“It’s about then that the British start saying, ‘Hang on, why do you call this soccer, it’s football?’,” explained Szymanski.
At the Olympics, there's no debate as to which sport is dominant.
Association football has been a major Olympic sport since 1900, while the American upstart version has never caught on outside of a one-game demonstration at the 1932 Summer Games. That will change — sort of — when a tamer variation, flag football , is introduced as an Olympic sport at the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles .
Watch live coverage of the Opening Ceremony on Friday, July 26, on NBC and Peacock beginning at 12 p.m. ET. Telemundo will provide Spanish-language coverage beginning at 1 p.m. ET. Primetime coverage starts at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT on NBC and Peacock .

Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez added a South American title to his World Cup medal overnight after Argentina defeated Colombia in Miami to win the 2024 Copa America.
Following a goalless 90 minutes, Lautaro Martinez's strike in the second half of extra time decided a tense final at Hard Rock Stadium.
The result gives Argentina a record 16th Copa America and means 23-year-old Enzo has won both senior international tournaments he has taken part in, following their World Cup win in Qatar.
After kick-off was delayed 80 minutes due to issues around fans getting inside the stadium, the final belatedly got underway with Blues star Enzo lining up in his usual midfield role.
But it was Colombia who started brightly - Luis Diaz going close, before Jhon Cordoba was only narrowly denied by the woodwork.
After the break Angel Di Maria, playing his final game for his country, nearly opened the scoring after some good work from Enzo in midfield, the winger forcing an excellent save from Camilo Vargas in the Colombia goal.
Argentina then had the ball in the net only 15 minutes from full-time but Nicolas Tagliafico's goal was ruled out for offside.
With neither side able to find a goal in 90 minutes, extra time and a possible penalty shootout loomed.
After an excellent shift, Enzo's night came to an end seven minutes into the additional period when he was replaced by Tottenham's Giovani Lo Celso.
Thankfully his side were able to win the game without the need for penalties - Martinez pouncing on a through ball from Lo Celso to coolly finish past Vargas.
Colombia were unable to respond in the remaining nine minutes meaning Argentina and Enzo were Copa America champions.
Congratulations, Enzo!

Argentina win Copa America 2024 title after Lautaro Martinez hits late winner in final vs Colombia
Lautaro Martinez scored the only goal of the final in the 112th minute as Argentina defeated Colombia to win the Copa America 2024 title. read more
Argentina won their second successive Copa America title on Monday after they defeated Colombia 1-0 in the 2024 final. Lautaro Martinez scored the only goal of the match, in the second half of the extra time after the game ended in a goalless draw in normal time.
After scoring the first goal of the match in the 112th minute which later proved to be the winner, Martinez ran to the bench to hug his captain Lionel Messi. The star footballer was forced to leave the field of play in the 66th minute after suffering a non-contact injury two minutes before his substitution. Messi injured his ankle after running and falling and had to be replaced by Nicolas Gonzalez with the scores tied.
The game ended goalless in normal time but Martinez clinched the winner in the second half of the extra time after entering the field of play in the 97th minute. In the 112th minute, Giovani Lo Celso’s perfect through pass found Martinez just outside the box and the striker sent his right-foot shot past the goalkeeper Camilo Vargas for his 29th international goal, his tournament-high fifth.
LAUTARO MARTÍNEZ: LA REDENCIÓN. pic.twitter.com/hLoJ9dDjxC — CONMEBOL Copa América™️ (@CopaAmerica) July 15, 2024
The winner also brought an end to Colombia’s 28-game unbeaten streak that started after a February 2022 loss to the Albiceleste.
This is Argentina’s third straight major title win following the 2021 Copa America and 2022 World Cup victories. They have also matched Spain who won the 2008 and 2012 European Championships along with the 2010 World Cup.
Overall, this is Argentina’s 16th Copa America title win, the most in history. Before the 2024 tournament, they were tired on 15 with Uruguay.
Colombia start positively
The mega final at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami was delayed by over 75 minutes due to a clash between the fans and security. The chaos also led to multiple fans needing medical treatment as questions were raised over the USA’s capability to host major football tournaments.
The Uruguay vs Colombia semi-finals also witnessed a mass brawl between Uruguayan players and Colombian fans.
The organisers on Monday said that unticketed fans trying to enter the stadium caused the chaos.
Nonetheless, after a delayed start, it was Colombia who started brightly and forced Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez to make four saves in the first half. But Argentina started to take control of the match in the second half despite losing Messi.
The Argentina football legend who was most likely making his final Copa America appearance at 37 was in tears due to being subbed out after seemingly suffering an ankle injury. He looked at the bench immediately after taking a tumble, fully aware that his Copa America was over. He had suffered a blow to his right leg in the first half as well and was reduced to tears after leaving the field of play.
Argentina, meanwhile, kept trying to score. Nicolas Tagliafico scored in the 75th minute but was ruled offside. A Gonzalez effort was saved by Vargas in the 95th minute before Martinez finally found the back of the net late in the game.
