Online Doctor of Philosophy - Computer Engineering

Work leading to the degree of  Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)  is designed to give the candidate a thorough and comprehensive knowledge of his or her professional field and training in methods of research. The final basis for granting the degree shall be the candidate’s grasp of the subject matter of a broad field of study and a demonstrated ability to do independent research. In addition, the candidate must have acquired the ability to express thoughts clearly and forcefully in both oral and written languages. The degree is not granted solely for the completion of coursework, residence and technical requirements, although these must be met.

Degree Details

Total number of hours (64 or 96) • For students who already hold a Master’s Degree, 64 total hours are required. • For “direct PhD” students, 96 hours are required.

A maximum of (6) transfer hours allowed from another institution. • Transfer hours must be from a U.S. peer institution; they cannot have been used on a previous degree plan. • Students must send syllabi, transcript, and TAMU course equivalent to the Graduate Office. Transfer hours are subject to the approval of the GSC.

All PhD students are required to pass the Departmental Qualifying Examination . All incoming PHD students (64 and 96 hour) are required to take the exam within one year of starting the program.

There are two types of Qualifying Exams available. The research advisor will select which Track the student takes. Students without a research advisor default to Track 1. Track 1: Written exam consisting of questions from undergraduate courses. This exam is administered in January and June of each year. More details on Track 1 are provided later in the handbook. Track 2: Written and oral exam in which the separately formed committee provides a student research articles to analyze then give a presentation. More details on Track 2 are provided later in the handbook.

Prior to admission , students must present a study p l an that is reviewed by a TAMU ECEN facu l ty member to demonstrate to the department the feasibi l ity and viabi l ity of their prospective study. A Texas A&M electrical and computer engineering (ECEN) facu l ty member must commit to serve as the dissertation advisor prior to the admission of a student. The dissertation research content shou l d invo l ve on l y theories, software, or the modest use of hardware, instead of any physica l   l ab use, so that the research can be performed remote l y without being on campus. Students wi l l  a l so need to submit a signed document acknow l edging that their emp l oyer is aware of the Ph.D. study and a l l ows dissertation research resu l ts to be pub l ished. The p l an shou l d inc l ude the courses to be taken and ensure that a l l  the courses have distance  l earning sections avai l ab l e. The advisement of students in this program is simi l ar to the on-campus program except that the student-facu l ty interactions are a l l  conducted through internet-based conferencing software. Students in this program will take the qua l ifying exam, pre l iminary ora l  exam, and dissertation defense in the same way as the on-campus program. Students will need to cover their trave l  expenses to the campus for these exams.

Course Information

A minimum of 18 (or 42) classroom hours (excludes 681, 684, 685, and 691). • 18 hours required for students with a previous Master’s degree and 42 for direct PHD students. • Classroom hours must be taken from courses within the College of Engineering (all departments) and/or College of Arts & Sciences (only MATH, STAT, PHYS, CHEM, BIOL) • Courses on degree plan must be approved by Research Advisor.

Undergraduate hours allowed (2 courses or 8 hours) • Only 400 level courses can be included on degree plan.

No more than 3 credit hours of Internship (684) are allowed. • PHD students cannot take 684 after dissertation defense. • If you are considering going on internship (684), please consult your research advisor before making plans.

Three (3) hours of Seminar (ECEN/CSCE 681) are required.

No more than 2 credit hours of Directed Studies (685) are allowed. • Students working on a research project should enroll in Research (691) hours.

PhD Program Overview

This doctoral program is for students who wish to advance knowledge and increase our understanding of the world through research, scholarship, and teaching. Doctoral students join the iSchool as apprentice researchers and graduate as independent scholars with great research careers, typically as tenure-stream faculty members at major research universities.

The program provides students with research experience, familiarity with appropriate information studies theories and methods, and participation in an active research community. Students attain this level of research competence through close partnership with our expert faculty who mentor and challenge them. Our curriculum offers flexibility to tailor coursework for individual need, with the intention of preparing all students to produce high-quality, original, and relevant research aligned to our mission as a school: Our Vision & Values  

Completion Timeline

iSchool faculty very strongly recommend full-time study in the doctoral program. Our doctoral program is designed to be completed within five years of full-time study, but for some students it may take four or six years. While every doctoral student’s program is unique, students will complete the program at approximately this pace in full-time study: 

  • Coursework: 1.5 - 2.5 years
  • Qualifying Procedure: 0.5 year
  • Dissertation Proposal: 0.5 year
  • Dissertation Completion: 0.5 - 1.5 years

​Program Requirements

Students must successfully complete multiple elements of the iSchool doctoral program. The requirements listed below are minima; the student's committees may require more work, especially with regard to classes, research methods, experiences, and participation in the iSchool’s research life (e.g., Research Colloquium presentations and doctoral research presentations) as well as the field’s research life (e.g., presentations at national conferences). 

  • Formation of an initial committee, qualifying committee, and dissertation committee
  • Thirty-nine hours of coursework (usually completed in two years)
  • Preparation of a plan of study
  • Annual review of each student’s progress prior to candidacy
  • Authoring of a qualifying research paper
  • Completion of a qualifying written examination
  • Completion of the qualifying oral examination based on the written examination
  • At least two submissions of research to peer-reviewed journals or proceedings
  • Admission to candidacy
  • Completion and defense of a dissertation proposal

The University of Texas at Austin

English Ph.D.

The Ph.D. program in English at the University of Texas at Austin is one of the largest and best doctoral programs of its kind. Ranked in the top 20 English Graduate Programs by U.S. News & World Report , our program offers students intensive research mentoring and pedagogical training in the vibrant setting that is Austin, Texas. In addition, all admitted English PhD students receive six years of full funding .

Drawing on the resources of two units, the Department of English and the Department of Rhetoric and Writing, our program has at its center a dynamic and dedicated faculty of over 60 .

While the Ph.D. program is housed in and administered by the Department of English , the Department of Rhetoric and Writing is a crucial partner in helping to educate our shared students. The make-up of each cohort of students mirrors our unusual interdepartmental collaboration: each year we accept 10-12 students in literature and 4 in rhetoric and digital literacies.

One of the distinguishing features of our program is its collegiality and sense of shared purpose. Students and faculty work collaboratively on a number of departmental and university-wide committees, participate actively in reading and writing groups, and treat one another with respect.

Our program is engaged not only in meeting the challenges of a complex, rapidly changing academic discipline but also in helping to shape it. Our graduate courses examine relationships between writing and other cultural practices and explore the social, historical, rhetorical, and technological processes by which literature and other discourses are constituted. While we take seriously our responsibility to help train the next generation of the professoriate—that is, to cultivate scholarship, effective teaching, and collegiality—we also encourage our students to think of their training and their futures in the broadest terms possible.

All students, regardless of whether they enter with a BA or MA, are required to complete 39 hours of formal graduate coursework taken for a grade before the end of their third year. These 39 hours must include:

  • E384K Disciplinary Inquiries, which is taken in the first semester. It may not include other courses under the E384 course number.
  • At least one 3-hour seminar on pre-1800 material
  • At least one 3-hour seminar on post-1800 material
  • At least 3 hours, but no more than 9 hours, taken out of department. Out-of-department courses include: undergraduate English courses taken for graduate credit, creative writing workshops or Literature for Writers courses with the New Writers Project, and supervised study conference courses arranged with individual faculty members.

These curricular requirements ensure that students encounter a wide range of courses, faculty, and texts during their time at UT, extending well beyond their specialized area of interest. Students choose coursework in consultation with the Associate Graduate Advisor, who may allow substitutions for English courses in cases where alternate coursework is needed to supplement departmental offerings. This alternate coursework could take the form of the out-of-department courses listed above. Such substitutions may be warranted in cases where a student is pursuing a portfolio in an interdisciplinary unit such as CWGS, MALS, or AADS; where the English department offers few courses in the student’s area of interest; or where the student needs to pursue a foreign language for research purposes. We encourage students to investigate portfolio options early in their career so they can integrate those courses as soon as possible. Some portfolios require 12 hours of coursework; in those cases, the Associate Graduate Advisor will grant an exception to the 9-hour limit on out-of-department courses.

Students who hold the position of AI are also required to take RHE398T, which is usually taken during the fall semester of their third year, or when a graduate student teaches RHE306 for the first time. RHE398T does not count toward the required 39 hours of formal graduate coursework.

Beginning in their third year of the program, students have the option of enrolling in additional seminars inside or outside the department, choosing whether to take these courses for a grade or for Credit/No Credit.  They can also enroll in E384L Scholarly Publication (usually taken in or after the third year) and E384M Professional Outcomes (usually taken in or after the fourth year). Students take these two courses for Credit/No Credit. The graduate program encourages students to continue enrolling in optional courses throughout their years as a PhD student, while they are reading for exams and planning and writing a dissertation.

In the spring of year three, students must pass the  Third-Year Examination , which tests their knowledge of and engagement with chosen fields of specialization. Students will be examined on either a fixed reading list or a reading list developed by three faculty members in collaboration with the student. The list will contain 60-80 primary and/or secondary texts. The Third-Year Examination consists of a written and an oral component. The written component consists of: 1) a 1000- to 2000-word intellectual rationale for the list; 2) an annotated version of the list (at least 1/3 of the texts with an annotation of 100 words or more each); and 3) two syllabi based on the list—the first for a survey course, the second for an upper-division seminar. Students will then sit for a two-hour oral examination during which the committee will ask questions about both the written materials and the students’ comprehension of the reading list.

The  Prospectus Examination  grants students an opportunity to receive formal feedback from three faculty members on their proposed dissertation project. Students work closely with faculty to write and revise a 15- to 20-page prospectus. Once the faculty members are ready to sign off on the document, an oral Prospectus Examination is scheduled. Students are encouraged to pass the Prospectus Examination by the end of the fall semester of their fourth year in the program.

Doctoral Candidacy  is achieved when students have successfully completed the Third-Year and Prospectus Examinations; fulfilled the foreign language requirement (see below); and identified a dissertation committee of at least four faculty members, one of whom needs to be from another graduate program or institution. All students must spend at least two long semesters, or one long semester and one summer, in candidacy before earning their degree.

The last milestone for the Ph.D. is the  Final Oral Defense , otherwise known as the dissertation defense.  In general, faculty will not schedule a defense until the dissertation is completed and ready for critical engagement.

Students working toward a Ph.D. in English at UT Austin are expected to pursue courses of language study relevant to their individual professional trajectories, as determined in consultation between students themselves; their faculty mentors; and graduate program advisor(s).

Student progress toward appropriate levels of competence will be assessed by means of a four-part  Foreign Language Audit  according to the following schedule:

Fall semester of the first year: Foreign Language Interview with the associate graduate advisor to review prior training, assess current levels of expertise, and, if necessary, begin developing an appropriate language study agenda.

Spring semester of the second year: as part of the Second-Year Reflection, students complete a first Language Study Check-in with the graduate advisor(s) and their faculty sponsor, to ensure that appropriate progress has been made toward execution of the agenda with alteration or addition in light of subfield expectations and project directions.

Spring semester of the third year (in most cases): as part of the Third-Year Exam, students will complete a second Language Study Check-in, this time with their exam committee, to determine whether satisfactory progress has been achieved on their language study agenda, again with alteration or addition in light of subfield expectations and project directions.

Fourth year (in most cases): as part of the Prospectus Exam, students will finalize their Foreign Language Audit. This will involve discussion with the exam committee, along with presentation of all necessary evidence to demonstrate that the language study agenda has been fulfilled. If, in the judgment of the committee, requisite levels of language competence have not been achieved, student and committee will agree upon a binding plan for fulfillment, during which period the student shall remain on probationary status with regard to the Foreign Language Requirement. Successful fulfillment of the Foreign Language Audit must be achieved before the student advances to Ph.D. candidacy.

Notes: Some students will enter the program with sufficient foreign language skills for their course of study (e.g. either compelling evidence of literate knowledge of a language other than English, such as a high school degree from a school in a non-English speaking country, or four or more semesters at the college level of a language other than English with a grade of B or better in the last semester, or its equivalent). These students will not need to complete the final three steps of the FLA.

What I understand about being an administrator is what I learned from Concordia. There are still things that I’m learning and growing in, but Concordia taught me how to ask the right type of questions, how to re-examine what I’m doing, and how to improve my work.

EdD students spend the first two years of the program completing practical coursework and the final year working on a CRIP project or dissertation.

The program begins with the first residency session on the Concordia University Texas campus in Austin, Texas. Students complete a one-week orientation on campus that includes course activities (8 a.m.–5 p.m.) that are an integral part of their 8-week EDU 6310 Christian Ethics course.  

The second residency session occurs during the following summer, at which time students return to campus for a week to complete additional course activities in a hands-on manner for another 8-week core course (8 a.m.–5 p.m.). After taking and passing the qualifying exam at the end of the first year, students are formally entered into candidacy for the Doctor of Education and complete 24 credit hours of specialization courses.

The foundational coursework is completed online, aside from the two required weeklong residencies.

During the third year, students shift their focus to the required practicum (six credit hours) and their CRIP project or dissertation (nine credit hours). Students can complete the entire program in just over three years following this plan.

Students choose to complete either the CRIP project or a doctoral dissertation.

The CRIP is an alternative to the theoretical doctoral dissertation. This option allows students more flexibility to identify research, curriculum, or leadership initiative needs within their school districts or organizations and develop research-based solutions and evaluations. The creative aspect of this option provides a more accommodating modality for student research while upholding the expectations of a doctoral program.

The CRIP may appeal to students looking to become active problem-solvers within their districts, impress district leadership with research-based solutions, and become valued contributors within their current environments.

The theoretical dissertation is also an option. A dissertation focuses on evaluating or constructing theory based on research methods focused on this end. Dissertations use the standard five-chapter format allowing students to develop more generalizable conclusions and recommendations.

The dissertation may appeal to students looking to excel in careers within higher education or the educational research community.

Students in both specializations have the choice of completing either a CRIP project or a dissertation throughout the third year of the EdD program.

Before students start their dissertation (3rd year of the program) a committee will be assigned to them. The committee chair is assigned during the Spring of year 2 and the other two committee members are assigned before they start dissertation coursework in the Fall of their 3rd year.  

Admission to the optional Texas Superintendent Certification program is completed toward the end of the first year of the EdD program for students pursuing the Educational Leadership (EDL) specialization.

Superintendent certification courses are part of the EDL specialization program and are subject to the regulations of the Texas Education Agency. At this time, the candidate seeking Texas Superintendent Certification must:

  • Submit a written application for admission.
  • Complete a faculty interview (rubric with faculty recommendation).
  • Be admitted to EdD Candidacy (Qualifying Exam report).
  • Provide service record showing at least three credible years of managerial experience in a public school district.
  • Provide a certificate demonstrating a valid, unexpired mid-management/principal certification from Texas.   To be accepted and remain in the Texas Superintendent Certification program at Concordia University Texas, the candidate must:
  • Meet all admission requirements to the Educational Leadership specialization, including a minimum GPA of 3.0 either cumulatively or in the last 60 credit hours from the most recently earned master's degree or higher
  • Earn passing scores on both the interview and qualifying exam
  • Accept the admissions offer within the required time frame
  • Remain in good standing with the University
  • Pass all the necessary coursework
  • Pass a Superintendent Certification Practice Exam after completing specialization courses.
  • Complete EDL 6335 Practicum I and EDL 6336 Practicum II at a TEA-approved district in Texas under the guidance of a state-certified mentor (Texas Superintendent Certification) with at least three years of experience.
  • Pass the TExES Superintendent Exam after completing EDL 6335 Practicum I or EDL 6336 Practicum II.

Admission Requirements

  • Complete application
  • Master's degree from an accredited university with a graduate GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Combined five years of credited teaching experience and/or administrative/leadership experience (mid-management or principal certification for those seeking Texas Superintendent Certification)
  • Employer Support Form (PDF) or a letter from the applicant's employer indicating support for the candidate's pursuit of the EdD, willingness to allow the candidate to conduct fieldwork in the organization (if a school district), and flexibility in work schedule so candidate can attend class and conduct approved fieldwork
  • Present supervisor
  • Academic/Professor
  • Co-worker/Professional peer
  • Official transcripts from accredited master's degree-conferring institution
  • Resume or CV that summarizes educational and professional career (applicant should be able to explain any gaps in service)
  • Letter of intent that introduces the applicant to the EdD Review Committee and answers the question, "Given the mission of Concordia, what can this program do for me?" (two typed pages, double-spaced)
  • Sample of scholarly writing (research from graduate school, published article, or paper that demonstrates the ability to conduct cited scholarly research)
  • For Texas Superintendent Certification only — a copy of service record and Social Security number
  • Evidence of English language fluency (if applicable)
  • Although no formal testing is required for entry, scores from the recent (five years or less) Graduate Record Exam (GRE) will be accepted and may be used if space is limited
  • Space in the program is limited, so the quality of items submitted will be taken into account. Various point values may be assigned to the above items in cases where there are more qualified applicants than program space. In all cases, Concordia will select students who present the most competitive applications and who we consider most likely to be successful, contributing members of the Concordia community who will graduate.

NOTE: Only fully complete admissions packets will be forwarded to the EdD Review Committee. Applications with incomplete materials will be held until all materials are received.

Application Process

The admissions process begins with submitting an application to the Office of Admissions. Decisions regarding acceptance are made at the completion of the application file. All applicants will be considered on an individual basis.

1. Online Application and Application Fee

Complete the online application and pay the $50 non-refundable application fee. On your application, please use your legal name and fill in any maiden names.

If you have a promo code, do not enter your credit card information.

2. Transcripts

Submit official transcripts from the college or university where you earned your master's degree.

The Office of Admissions requires that you have the official transcript from your degree-granting institution sent directly to the University (see official address below). Please request your transcript immediately, as it may take up to six weeks for transcripts to arrive in our office.

If any transcripts are from a foreign institution, an official WES Foreign Education Credential Service evaluation must be completed and sent to the Office of Admissions. For more information please visit the WES websites. Please note: This process could take several weeks.

You have three ways to get your transcripts to Concordia:

Student Delivered A student-delivered transcript will be accepted as an official transcript only if it is received in the original sealed envelope and stamped by the institution of records as "Issued to Student in a Sealed Envelope."

3. Professional Work Experience

Submit a copy of your resume that shows at least five combined years of credited teaching experience and/or administrative/leadership experience (mid-management or principal certification for those seeking Texas Superintendent Certification). Leadership experience should be starred on your resume if it's not obvious.

Students seeking Texas Superintendent Certification must submit a copy of their service record and Social Security number.

4. Other Materials

EdD applicants must also submit the following:

  • Employer Support Form (PDF) or a letter of support from your employer
  • Three letters of reference
  • Letter of intent
  • Sample of scholarly writing
  • Evidence of English-language fluency (if applicable)
  • Optional GRE scores

5. Apply for Financial Aid

Complete the online federal application at studentaid.gov for the school year. The Concordia University Texas school code is 003557 .

For those eligible, financial aid is available in the form of unsubsidized loans.

6. Payment Options

The Concordia EdD features locked-in tuition, meaning that you will pay the same rate of tuition throughout the entire program.

Autism and Developmental Disabilities

The Autism and Developmental Disabilities (A&DD) Doctoral Program provides students with cutting-edge training for conducting research. Students engage in hands-on practice with individuals with autism and developmental disabilities. Counseling Psychology

Our doctoral program in counseling psychology is scientist-practitioner based, preparing Ph.D. psychologists to work with problems of human behavior in a range of social processes and systems.

Cultural Studies in Education

Focus your studies on the importance of cultural and social diversity in education. The CSE program takes an interdisciplinary approach to researching topics such as the history, philosophy, and politics of education, urban schooling, critical pedagogy and globalization.

Early Childhood Education

Improve early childhood education and development by researching and learning about early childhood policy, pedagogy, curriculum and training for children in preschool through 3rd grade. This program prepares students to address global, national and local issues facing young children and their communities in classrooms, schools and beyond.

Early Childhood Intervention/Early Childhood Special Education

The Early Childhood Intervention/Early Childhood Special Education (ECI/ECSE) Ph.D. degree features coursework and intensive mentoring from scholars that conduct cutting-edge clinical and translational research to improve the lives of young children with disabilities and their families. The goal of the program is to prepare the next generation of scholars and future leaders to conduct high-quality research that advances the field of early childhood special education. 

Educational Policy and Planning

Through vigorous coursework and innovative research, students examine important topics and issues in public schools to better inform policies that benefit all students.

Equity and Diversity in Special Education (EDSE)

Focus on the unique needs of individuals with disabilities and their families from diverse socio-cultural and linguistic communities. Students will become prepared to work in higher education, leadership roles in schools, research roles in education and as critical thought leaders in multicultural special education.

Exercise Physiology

Study exercise physiology using an integrative approach to discover and disseminate basic, applied and clinical knowledge regarding the metabolic, cardiovascular, cardiopulmonary and autonomic nervous system responses to exercise and physical inactivity in health, aging and diabetes. Our graduate students conduct a focused line of research by working with faculty mentors. Their cooperative work builds a foundation of knowledge critical for the advancement of the field.

​Health Behavior and Health Education 

Gain the necessary experience for a research, academic or applied career in health promotion, health education and public health. Our graduate programs provide a multidisciplinary perspective on health and well-being across the lifespan.

Higher Education Leadership and Policy

The PHELP Ph.D. program prepares students in the scholarly study of higher education. Through research across departments within the university, students gain first-hand experience into effective applications, policies and leadership skills used in academia by faculty and staff. Students also learn how universities function as advocates for social justice and support increasingly diverse student populations. This program starts in the fall semester.

Human Development, Culture and Learning Sciences

The Ph.D. program in Human Development, Culture and Learning Sciences (HDCLS) trains graduate students in theories of human cognition, culture, development, language, learning, motivation, social and personality psychology. Graduates are prepared for teaching and research careers in these areas.

Language and Literacy Studies 

Learn to become a leader in language and literacy studies through collaborative research, engaging coursework and clinical practice. Students will know the importance of literacy as a social tool for change so that they can go on to become advanced degree teachers, professors in literacy studies and administrative policy makers for literacy programs.

Learning Disabilities and Behavior Disorders 

This program will prepare you to work in a variety of settings including higher education, leadership roles in schools and districts, and further research into the practices and interventions that effectively treat learning disabilities. 

Learning Technologies 

Use state-of-the-art technologies to create and offer interactive and engaging forms of education. Learn how to use the internet and other emerging technologies in K-12 education, higher education, and business or industry training. Courses cover the design, implementation and evaluation of various educational applications and related research topics.

Movement and Cognitive Rehabilitation Science

Explore aspects of biomechanical, neural and neuromuscular mechanisms of human movement with applications to development and aging, skill acquisition, elite performance and rehabilitation following chronic or acute injuries. Our graduate students work in collaborative multi-disciplinary teams with faculty mentors on focused lines of research to address basic and applied questions, using kinematic and kinetic motion capture and electrophysiological assessment of neuromuscular function.

Physical Culture and Sport Studies

Pursue a Ph.D. in physical culture and sport studies to prepare for an academic career with a focus in research. This unique program brings together several fields related to sport culture studies. Students are encouraged to choose coursework from multiple areas, integrating history, Olympic studies, cultural studies, sociology and gender studies, law, political science and ethics/philosophy. Archival collections at the Stark Center provide students with unparalleled resources for research in sport and physical culture studies.

Physical Education Teacher Education

Study the art and science of physical education through our doctoral program. Students learn how to design curriculum for physical education along with research, assessment and evaluation practices. This program also has a strong focus on cultural studies in contemporary education.

Quantitative Methods

The Ph.D. quantitative methods specializations offer training in modern statistical and psychometric methods to prepare graduates to advance methodological research and to apply those methods to address educational and social science research questions. Our graduates are employed in academia, professional testing organizations, educational research and development agencies, industrial psychology agencies, governing agencies of higher education, state departments of education and research and program evaluation divisions of large school districts.

School/Clinical Child Psychology

The School/Clinical Child Psychology doctoral program uses a scientist-practitioner model to prepare applied researchers and licensed psychologists to understand and enhance the development of children, adolescents and their caretakers in context.

Social Studies Education

Our doctoral program prepares students to become educators in social studies. Courses in this program approach social studies education from a variety of disciplines in order to provide educators with a unique perspective on how to teach and improve social studies education.

STEM Education

Education in science, technology, engineering and math is critically important. Students in this program learn to inspire learners to pursue their interests in STEM topics, as well as become advocates for equity in STEM through leadership, research and teaching.

Doctor of Education (Ed.D.)

Cooperative Superintendency Program 

The Cooperative Superintendency Program (CSP) offers a doctoral degree within the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy. This program prepares students with the skills, knowledge and real-world experiences to provide direction within a dynamic educational landscape. Students are engaged through content focusing on superintendency preparation, as well as for positions in state education agencies, education research centers and executive-level positions in both urban and suburban districts. This program starts in the first summer session.

Executive in Higher Education Leadership

The Executive Ed.D. in Higher Education Leadership program prepares students for higher education leadership careers. Students will learn competencies in social justice, equity, research, organization and technology that contribute to aspects of a qualified educational leader. This program is designed for working professionals to be completed within 30-36 months.

Online Programs FAQs

The type of courses offered differs by program. Classes may be one of the following:

  • Online (OL), or Asynchronous: Online courses are not taught in real-time but include pre-recorded lectures, video uploads, class chats and individual meetings with professors.
  • Virtual (V), or Synchronous: Students participate in virtual courses remotely and in real-time on a scheduled class day and time.

Some programs may offer a hybrid of online/virtual and in-person classes.

Virtual courses are synchronous, meaning they are taken remotely in real-time (with your professor and classmates via Zoom) on a scheduled class day and time. Online courses are asynchronous, meaning they are not taught in real-time but include pre-recorded lectures, video uploads, class chats and individual meetings with professors.

Hybrid programs offer a mix of in-person classes on the St. Mary’s University campus and online or virtual courses.

Virtual class schedules will depend on the program, but all graduate-level virtual (synchronous) classes will take place in the evenings.

The time to complete a degree depends on the degree earned. Most master’s programs are typically 30 to 36 credit hours and may take 15 to 36 months to earn, depending on the program. Certificates are typically 6 to 18 hours and can be completed in as little as one semester, depending on the program; however, most certificates take 9 months or more to complete on average.

For synchronous, virtual courses, professors will require you to use a webcam and microphone to participate in class via Zoom. Once you have been admitted and are provided St. Mary’s University credentials, you can access Zoom for free using your St. Mary’s email address/username.

Professors will share assignments via Canvas, the University’s student learning portal. You can access Canvas online using your St. Mary’s username and password.

The University bookstore offers digital rentals for some textbooks and course materials.

Check with your Program Director to see if your program courses may require other hardware or software.

Your degree will appear on your transcript the same as it would for an on-campus program and will not indicate that it was an online program.

Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)

The University of Houston offers a Master of Science in Nursing degree. Our face-to-face and web-enhanced classes are designed to work around your busy schedule, and you’ll receive a quality university education from excellent faculty at a great value.

The Master of Science in Nursing program (Education, Administration and FNP) is designed to build upon the BSN degree and is offered at the University of Houston at Katy and online. Students in this program are prepared to function at advanced levels with an expanded knowledge of theory, research and clinical application. Graduates are prepared to provide evidenced based health care and to work on collaborative teams. Lab and/or clinical course requirements will be in a face-to-face learning environment for practice and demonstration to meet course objectives and accreditation requirements. Each graduate will be able to function in an advanced practice role as a Nurse Administrator, Nurse Educator, or Family Nurse Practitioner. Nurses who have a master’s degree in nursing may be eligible for a Post Master’s Certificate as a nurse educator or nurse administrator.

MSN Administration

The Administration track prepares students to lead healthcare innovations by improving access, addressing quality and safety issues, and supervising the finance and operations of a health care organization.

MSN Education

Through the Education track, nurse educators prepare to apply educational theory and practice, develop courses and curriculum for nursing students and staff, and develop classroom and clinical strategies to prepare nurses to function in the health care environment.

Family Nurse Practitioner

The FNP track integrates both academic and community-based training to promote an evidence based approach to the care of individuals, families and the community. Hybrid graduate tracks offer face-to-face classes one day a week for maximum scheduling flexibility for students, while offering the essential benefit of role-modeling and networking with leaders in the profession.

Post Master's Certificates

Post Master’s certificate candidates are required to achieve a grade of B or higher in all post MSN certificate courses to be eligible to earn the certificate.

Doctor of Nursing Practice

The new Post Master’s Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program (Administration, Family Nurse Practitioner) is designed to build upon the MSN degree and is offered at the University of Houston Main campus and online. The Doctor of Nursing Practice is an evidence-based-practice-focused program and students who complete this program will demonstrate the Essentials of Doctoral Education for Advanced Nursing Practice. Nurses who have a Doctor of Nursing Practice have completed the highest level of education in nursing practice.

About the AE-MSN

The Alternate Entry Master of Science in Nursing (AE-MSN) program is designed for people holding baccalaureate or graduate degrees in disciplines other than nursing and who are interested in pursuing both their Registered Nurse (RN) License and Master of Science in Nursing degree. After completing the rigorous academic and clinical training, AE-MSN graduates are expected to assume entry-level positions and advance rapidly in their nursing careers as they acquire experience in the field.

Leadership in Diverse Settings (LeaDs)

The Leadership in Diverse Settings (LeaDS) program is a master's level curriculum created to address the need for nurses to take on leadership roles in various healthcare environments. The aim of the LeaDS program is to equip graduates with a comprehensive set of skills to lead in patient-centered healthcare, community, and educational settings. Graduates of the LeaDS program will be prepared to drive change in complex and dynamic environments. The program offers courses and guided experiences to develop leaders with the following competencies:

AE-MSN Resources

The Foundation Year: The AE program is designed to satisfy RN licensure requirements and train students in advanced practice and specialty nursing roles. The first year of the program is an intensive, full-time series of foundation courses. The A E-MSN Foundation Year (Pre-Licensure) Courses (PDF) are accelerated, specially designed graduate courses. These courses include content and experiences required to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) and are required for graduate-level study in nursing. All foundation courses must be completed before students are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN licensure exam. The sequence of AE foundation courses begins in the first summer session of the program, and full-time enrollment during the foundation sequence is required.

Master’s Coursework: After passing the NCLEX-RN and obtaining their RN license, students are eligible to work as an RN in Texas only. The second and third years of the program focus on the coursework required for the Master of Science in Nursing degree in the student's chosen concentration area. The MSN degree is typically awarded in the spring of the third year. After degree completion, the RN license can be endorsed outside of Texas.

  • Accept responsibility and accountability for the ethical practice of nursing at an advanced level.
  • Critically apply theoretical perspectives, teaching/learning principles, and evidence-based knowledge from nursing and related sciences to professional nursing practice across healthcare environments.
  • Systematically and comprehensively investigate complex issues encountered in nursing practice to promote optimal health outcomes for individuals, families, communities, populations, and systems.
  • Advocate for patients, families, caregivers and communities to access healthcare services and to preserve and promote health.

All students interested in applying for graduate study in Nursing at the University of Texas at Austin must meet the admission requirements established by the University’s Graduate School and the School of Nursing. Applicants are expected to be graduates of accredited colleges or universities. Below are the minimum requirements for admission.

  • Degree : Bachelor’s degree in an area other than Nursing.
  • GPA : 3.0 (4.0 scale) or comparable GPA in completed upper-division work (junior- and senior-level courses) and graduate work.
  • Recommendations : 3 required and 1 reference must be from a healthcare professional. Written recommendations are not accepted.
  • Prerequisites: Completion of AE Prerequisite Courses (PDF).  See pdf for completion time requirements and policies.

*Applicants to the AE-MSN program are encouraged to have volunteer or work experience in a healthcare related field.

Any person applying for formal admission to the AEMSN program must submit the following application materials by the October 1 deadline .

Application for Admission

Complete the online application for admissions and pay the application fee. The application is only open between August 1st and October 1st. The online application is data entry only. All supporting application documents are uploaded on the My Status page after the application is paid and submitted.

* Recommendation : Complete online application, at minimum, 2 weeks before the October 1 deadline ensuring all documents are provided by the application deadline.

  • Official transcripts with a print day of one year or less, from all post-secondary colleges or universities attended, including community colleges. See AE-MSN LeaDs Application Checklist (PDF) for transcript upload procedures.
  • Curriculum Vitae: include educational background, professional experience, volunteer experience and other relevant information (e.g., publications, scholarship and awards, professional organizations, and community activities).
  • Personal Statement: Maximum two (2) pages. Readable font, 12-point, double spaced, 1-inch margins
  • Using our secure, personalized form, three (3) professional recommendations that attest to the applicant's academic ability, professional competency and personal character must be submitted electronically by each recommender.
  • One reference must be from a healthcare professional, a nurse, physician, nurse practitioner or clinical nurse specialist.
  • Written recommendations are not accepted.

In addition to a bachelor’s degree in a non-nursing field, applicants must complete 24 credits (grade C- or better) of prerequisite coursework from an approved institution.

Prerequisite Policies  

  • A grade of “C-” or higher must be earned in all prerequisite courses.
  • Human Anatomy and Microbiology must be two of the five courses. 
  • Final grades for any prerequisite courses in progress during the fall admissions semester must be provided by the second week in January . 
  • *Applicants MUST have completed Human Anatomy with lab, Human Physiology with lab, and Pharmacology courses within the past 6 years from the anticipated AE program enrollment date. 
  • All 7 prerequisite courses must be completed before ENROLLING in the AE program. Therefore, if admitted, one to two courses can be completed in the spring before starting the program. 
  • All prerequisite courses can be completed in a distance learning format. 
  • All prerequisite courses are subject to approval by the Graduate Student Services Office.

The School of Nursing Graduate Admissions and Progression Committee (GAPC) begin preliminary admission reviews after the October 1st deadline. All application materials must be submitted by the program’s application deadline; files that remain incomplete will not be reviewed or acted upon by GAPC.

If admitted, applicants will be notified of the admission decision by early February. Decisions are communicated in the following ways:

  • Offers of admission are sent via email by the School of Nursing.
  • Official e-letters from the Graduate and International Admission Center notifying you of the admission decision of the Office of Graduate Studies are available on the application Status Check page.

Acceptance by the School of Nursing and the Graduate is necessary before enrollment is permitted. Please be aware, if admitted, completion of all compliance requirements is required at least one month before the first day of class.
