My Durham PhD Experience

  • Research news

blue sky aerial photo of a coast landscape with houses

By Joy Twemlow

Having started in October 2020, my PhD got off to a rocky start. Travel restrictions meant that I wasn’t able to get to Durham until three months after my start date, and I spent the first five months after arrival in lockdown. Despite this, everyone at Durham Law School made me feel welcome, and in the past two years I have had some wonderful opportunities. Thus, while my PhD experience could have easily been an isolating one, I have instead found Durham law School to be an environment that supports me as an emerging researcher.

A large part of this is down to my wonderful supervisors who allow me to explore and grow my area of research – It is definitely true that good supervisors are the most important factor in surviving your PhD! But alongside this, I have found support through research centres and the law school professional staff. Importantly, this network within Durham has helped me to navigate the (often confusing) academic landscape and has meant I have genuinely enjoyed my PhD journey thus far.

One experience that captures how Durham Law School provides this web of support, is the chance I had to run a stream at the Critical Legal Conference (CLC) 2022 in Tromso, Norway. I proposed a stream alongside my supervisor that invited submissions for participatory workshops (instead of traditional academic presentations). The motivation for proposing the CLC stream came from the success of a previous workshop I ran alongside fellow Durham PhD students. We purposively designed our workshop to be different from a traditional conference; inviting participants to share their research vulnerabilities and collaboratively scrapbook their views. Our initiative, supported by the Gender and Law at Durham (GLAD) Research Centre, was directed towards making academia a more collaborative and co-creative space. The support provided by GLAD was essential in turning our desire to create a more friendly space in academia into the reality of our workshop.

This initial support and success of this GLAD workshop gave me the confidence to continue to push for more co-creative forms of academic gathering and the critical underpinning of CLC made it a perfect place to bring alternative conferencing to. Our stream required participants to run interactive workshops and we received proposals for poetry-writing, game playing, sci-fi world-creating, along with more traditional workshop formats. I personally ran a workshop where participants turned their conference abstracts into memes; creating an alternative, meme-based conference program (which can be viewed here ). Everyone that took part in one of our stream workshops commented on how invigorating it was to be able to actively engage with their fellow conference attendees. Because of this positive feedback, I left CLC even more motivated to pursue experiments in alternative academic gatherings.

The importance of the intellectual support, especially for us emerging academics, cannot be understated. Without my supervisors, peers, and colleagues in the research centres supporting each step of this journey, I could not have developed the confidence to experiment with non-traditional ideas. Also important are the practical and financial support that the Law School provides; The professional staff provided administrative support for the GLAD workshop which allowed it to run smoothly and I was lucky enough to receive PGR funding to cover the cost of travel to Tromso, without which I would not have been able to attend. In this way, Durham law school not only allowed me to have the wonderful experience of attending a conference in a scenic location, but actively fostered my interest in alternative conferencing – allowing me to build a portfolio of initiatives that enriches my PhD journey.

Dual Degrees: J.D. / Ph.D.

The Duke University Graduate School and the School of Law are revising the joint degree J.D./Ph.D. program. New applications are not being accepted until further notice.

Applicants for the J.D./Ph.D. must apply separately to the Law School and the Graduate School. Students who apply directly and successfully to the J.D./Ph.D. program will be admitted into both programs from the date of their matriculation at Duke, even though they will initially be pursuing the joint J.D./master's degree en route to the subsequent Ph.D. It is expected that once they have completed their initial three years of study, students will subsequently register solely in the doctoral program and have access to the normal mechanisms of financial support available to other Ph.D. students in the relevant departments. (Some departments may permit J.D./Ph.D. students to begin their teaching assistant experience while still in Law School.) In most instances, completion of the Ph.D. should take no more than 3 years beyond receipt of the J.D./master's degree.

Data, Research and Development Coordinator, Duke School of Law

Durham, NC, US, 27710

Duke University:

Duke University was created in 1924 through an indenture of trust by James Buchanan Duke. Today, Duke is regarded as one of America’s leading research universities. Located in Durham, North Carolina, Duke is positioned in the heart of the Research Triangle, which is ranked annually as one of the best places in the country to work and live. Duke has more than 15,000 students who study and conduct research in its 10 undergraduate, graduate and professional schools. With about 40,000 employees, Duke is the third largest private employer in North Carolina, and it now has international programs in more than 150 countries.

Occ Summary

This position will coordinate the prospect and data management of a major and annual gifts fundraising program to develop and build support from alumni, parents, faculty, students, and friends.  The position requires a person to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously, to work comfortably with data sets and databases, and to have strong attention to detail.

Data and Prospect Management

  • Support major and annual gifts fundraising teams regarding data needs, including setting parameters for and pulling various lists, and responding to related data-issues and questions.
  • Coordinate the process for entering moves, donor contacts, and solicitations for gift officers, including entering moves and solicitations into Duke’s alumni and donor database (DADD) and partnering with the appropriate teams within Duke Alumni Engagement & Development (DAED) when necessary (Alumni & Development Systems, Business Intelligence, etc.).
  • Create, maintain, and utilize tracking systems to assure efficient and well-coordinated efforts.
  • Maintain $50,000+ solicitation list to correctly reflect status of all Duke Law School (DLS) solicitations and reconcile with DADD at least quarterly.
  • Coordinate with individual gift officers to provide monthly and quarterly reports of gift officer metrics and progress towards goals, including trips, visits, moves, attempted contacts, solicitations, portfolio penetration, pledge status, lapsed donors, etc.
  • Prepare quarterly and annual reports on fundraising activity, including progress reports on DLS’s campaign fundraising goals or other reports as requested.
  • Support use of DADD and Tableau by gift officers, work closely with Business Intelligence (BI) to improve functionality, and explore new ways to utilize the tools for the benefit of the office.
  • Bring data issues to the attention of DAED as needed and work together to find solutions. Submit requests for changes to the system so that data needs can be more efficiently met with more accurate results.

Prospect Research

  • Design and produce a variety of giving and capacity reports to facilitate triage of contacts for gift officers.
  • Identify prospects with the capacity and inclination to support DLS at a greater level and discuss next steps with appropriate gift officer. Implement data analytics projects to develop strong prospect pipeline.
  • Prepare bios and/or briefings on DLS major gift prospects for gift officers and, when necessary, the Dean.
  • Meet periodically with DAED data colleagues to gain a better sense of University timeline, lists, and processes as related to Law ADO. Understand University prospect and portfolio management protocol and policies and apply and/or adjust those as appropriate in Law ADO.

Administrative

  • Organize periodic “huddles” in support of gift officers and help plan agendas for prospect management meetings and gift strategy meetings with the Dean.
  • Review on a daily basis prospect activity reports, contact reports, call lists, and itineraries, looking for opportunities and/or action items for DLS. Alert the appropriate gift officers and develop a process for ensuring appropriate follow-up.
  • Build trip call lists in coordination with gift officers and assist with trip preparation as it relates to prospect research, bios, strategy development, and materials preparation.  Distribute itineraries, maintain contact with traveler while on the road, and provide back-up administrative support for trips as necessary.
