On Assignment, Inc.

On Assignment, Inc. is an agency that places scientific and technical workers in temporary jobs with companies across the United States. While most temporary service agencies provide clerical and light industrial employees, On Assignment has maintained a unique market niche by providing scientific professionals to laboratories, including the biotechnology, environmental, chemical, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, and petrochemical industries. Since 1994, the company also provides temporary workers for finance needs, and since 1996, it services the environmental industries. On Assignment operates four divisions: Lab Support, Healthcare Financial Staffing, Envirostaff, and Advanced Science Professionals. The company maintains a telemarketing sales staff for client recruitment, and scientifically trained account managers make assignments from the pool of qualified jobseekers.

On Assignment began in 1986, when Bruce Culver and Raf Dahlquist founded a California company named Lab Support, Inc. Culver was an executive in the scientific instrument industry with Bausch & Lomb/ARI, Hach and Varian, and Dahlquist was a senior scientist at Bausch & Lomb. The two had also worked together at Applied Research Labs, a Valencia, California scientific instruments company. Their experience in the instrument industry convinced Culver and Dahlquist that there was a significant, unserviced market for temporary lab workers at companies across the country. Larger temporary personnel service companies were focused on the clerical and industrial markets, ignoring science companies and their needs.

To create a company that would occupy this special niche in temporary services, Culver and Dahlquist, with the help of their hairdresser wives, each contributed between $20,000 and $30,000 in personal funds to the startup of the business in 1985. Within 6 months, they were running short of funds, and embarked on a search for financing. Turned down by 20 different venture capital firms, they were at the point of closing the door on their attempt to start a successful company when the 21st capital firm, Sierra Ventures, agreed to support the company. Between Sierra Ventures and subsequent investors, Culver and Dahlquist raised $2.5 million of venture capital, and officially opened the doors of Lab Support, Inc. in 1986. That year, the company's revenues were $623,000, and they quickly surged to $2.9 million in 1987 and $7.4 million in 1988. In 1987, the company placed some 700 employees--including chemists, biologists, lab technicians, and other scientists--in temporary employment. Job-seekers received Lab Support placement services for free, but were promised no guaranteed placement. Over 6,000 resumes were stored in the company's computer system, and used to cross-reference employee qualifications with the needs of clients, including Chevron, Shell, Westinghouse, Monsanto, and Johnson & Johnson. Overall, company customers seemed to respond well to the temporary scientist solution, with over 75 percent of the company's revenue coming from repeat business from existing clients. When companies utilized Lab Support temporary workers, the employees technically worked for Lab Support, which provided them with a salary, insurance, a medical plan, and benefits. Lab Support then billed the company at a higher rate, keeping the profit. Although one reason job-seekers enlisted with Lab Support was in hopes of a full-time position, the company charged clients a fee for hiring workers who had been with Lab Support for less than six months. The fee, which did not apply when workers had been with the company for six months or more, amounted to as much as 25 percent of the worker's first-year salary. Typically, employment assignments for the company last about three months.

With its headquarters in Canoga Park, California, by 1987 the company also had opened five field offices, in Costa Mesa and Burlingame, California; Englewood, Colorado; Morristown, New Jersey; and Chicago. Such rapid growth, however, entailed a hefty investment in operating costs in an already slim-margin industry, and the company had not yet turned a profit. Expansion into new areas, including consulting and recruiting, was also hurting the bottom line. In 1989, the company's balance sheet looked pessimistic, with losses of $1.5 million on sales of only $7 million. This dilemma caused Culver and Dahlquist to invest in an experienced executive from the temporary personnel industry, to manage the next phase of the organization's development, expanding in the laboratory market and diversifying into other professional areas.

In March 1989, a new era of leadership began and the company was saved from near-extinction when H. Tom Buelter became Lab Support, Inc.'s president and CEO. Bavarian-born Buelter had a proven track record in the industry, having led Kelly Services, Inc.'s Assisted Living division through major growth in revenues between 1983 and 1988. He pulled in the reins on the consulting and recruiting businesses, and focused instead on client development. With the high number of companies that had downsized in the 1980s, Buelter had no trouble finding customers for temporary employees. Revenues continued to increase in 1989, and the company closed its first fiscal year without a loss, with earnings of $13.2 million and net income of $166,000. In fact, Buelter transformed Lab Support into a profitable company within a few months. That same year, both founders--Culver and Dahlquist--quit the company, leaving it in Buelter's more capable hands.

One of Buelter's restructuring brainstorms was the development of the account manager position in 1991. Under Buelter's plan, account managers must have scientific degrees and lab experience, so as to fully understand the technical needs of the company's clients. Account Managers were responsible for providing all client and employee services, including recruitment, training and coaching, business development, assignments, and followup.

Under Buelter's management, both revenues and net income continued to improve. In 1990, revenues increased 63 percent to $21.5 million and net income was $1.5 million--nine times that of the previous year. In 1991, revenues again increased to $26.2 million, with a decrease in net income to $1.1 million. The increase in revenues and profitability corresponded with more assignments made yearly. The average weekly number of temporary professionals on assignment went up from 392 in 1989 to 765 in 1991.

The background for the company's success was the rapid growth of the U.S. temporary services industry. Between 1975 and 1991, the industry's total payroll grew from $0.9 billion to $9.6 billion. The expansion of the temporary industry, in turn, was situated within the hiring of large numbers of white collar professionals, coupled with layoffs during the recession of the early 1980s. When the economy recovered, companies began to turn to temporary personnel, rather than replacing previous employees with permanent new workers. Companies using temporary personnel for a wide variety of needs were recognizing the benefits of nonpermanent employees, including decreased fixed overhead, increased staffing flexibility, elimination of expensive severance packages and low-risk, on-the-job evaluations of prospective employees.

The company took on its current name in 1992, in conjunction with its public offering. Operating under the new company name of On Assignment, Lab Support became the company's first operating division, with its specialization of industrial, pharmaceutical, and other laboratory positions. The company's intention, by establishing Lab Support as a division, was to soon expand into offering specialized services in other professional niches through additional divisions in the future. The public offering comprised 1.7 million shares at $7 per share.

At the time of its public offering, On Assignment was the only nationwide temporary services provider specializing exclusively in scientific laboratory personnel. By 1992, over 400 clients were served by 26 company branch offices in 24 metropolitan areas, and 1,000 scientific temporary workers were placed in assignments during the year. Some of the company's success may have been attributable to the booming medical and biotechnology businesses, which were receptive to On Assignment's temporary workers with special skills needed in medical laboratories, hospitals, and health care clinics. The company counted some of America's biggest drugmaking firms among its clients, including Abbott Laboratories, Hoffman-La Roche, and Bristol-Myers Squibb. In all, in 1992 On Assignment had a company client base of over 400 companies, including more than 30 Fortune 500 companies.

The first year as a public company set new records for On Assignment, with $32.7 million in revenues (a 25 percent increase over the previous year) and $1.76 million in net income (a 60 percent increase). The company attributed this success to two accomplishments: the restructuring and subsequent emphasis on the Account Manager position, and a 24 percent increase in the average number of employees in assignment, from 765 in 1991 to 945 in 1992. The temporary services industry continued to grow, with one in three Americans in the contingency worker category according to On Assignment's 1992 annual report.

By 1993, On Assignment was active in 32 cities with offices from Seattle to Miami, and clients included major companies such as Hewlett-Packard, Exxon, and Johnson & Johnson. An exclusive sales and marketing agreement was reached with Baxter International Inc., whereby the pharmaceutical company's scientific products division began to offer On Assignment's temporary services to its customers. During 1993 the company employed over 3,600 science professionals in assignments averaging between three-and-a-half and four months for 1,145 client firms. That year, the company was Number 22 on Business Week Magazine's Hot Growth list and Number 58 on Forbes 's list of the "Best Small Companies in America." Stock prices soared to a high of $15 in February 1993, and settled at $12 by May. Revenues grew 17 percent to $38.08 million, and net income surged 40 percent to $2.46 million. With no competitors on the national scale, the company was supplying 1,100 scientists with work, filling most customer orders within a 24-hour period. Typically, clients paid On Assignment wages from $10 an hour (for lab technicians) to $35 an hour (for experienced microbiologists), which left the company with a 30 percent profit after employment taxes. The company began to explore offering medical coverage to its workers in 1993.

Taking its first step toward diversification, On Assignment acquired the 11th fastest growing company in the San Francisco Bay Area in January 1994--1st Choice Mortgage Personnel Inc. This acquisition supported the opening of On Assignment's second division, Finance Support, which used the same methods as Lab Support to match finance professionals with the temporary needs of banking, lending, credit, and mortgage institutions. The acquisition quickly showed its merit in sales numbers; first-quarter revenues were up 23 percent from the same quarter of the previous year, second-quarter profit showed a 37 percent increase, and the third quarter was up by 36 percent. The success was attributed to the new division as well as expense controls, including decreased workers' compensation insurance. For the year as a whole, revenues increased 27 percent to $48.4 million, and net income saw a 36 percent growth to $3.35 million. During that year, 5,200 scientists were placed in jobs. The company was up to Number 36 on Forbes 's list of the "Best Small Companies in America," and the Wall Street Journal noted that On Assignment was changing personnel practices of U.S. businesses. Now billing up to 40 percent over worker wages, On Assignment had become a profitable business requiring very little capital; a transformation over its earlier incarnation with Culver and Dahlquist at the helm. Due to its market niche, On Assignment's 7 percent net profit margins greatly exceeded those of temporary agencies placing clerical workers, which typically earned around 2 percent profit.

A second acquisition at the end of 1994--of Sklar Resources Group, Inc.--was made to increase the size of the Finance Support division, and to expand its service by adding finance professionals in credit and collections. The company especially sought out businesses with serious collection problems, including health care, automotive leasing, and publishing. By July 1995, the company had 44 branch offices across the country. Credibility had been built based on the high quality of its temporary employees, with over 20 percent of its workers hired by clients into permanent positions.

In late 1995, On Assignment continued its rapid diversification with the creation of Advanced Science Professionals. Launched in New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, this division was formed to serve the needs of biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies requiring employees with advanced science degrees and very specific skills for finite projects. For the company, Advanced Science Professionals marked its entry into the upper levels of the flexible staffing pyramid, and the resulting opportunity to secure higher wage levels. Revenues continued to grow, with a 28 percent increase to $62.04 million, and net income saw a corresponding jump of 29 percent to $4.33 million. By the end of 1995, 46 branch offices were operating in 41 markets, and 6,750 workers had been employed at over 2,000 client companies (including 800 new clients in 1995 alone). All employees were now offered benefits including access to group insurance, paid holidays, a 401(k) plan, an Employee Stock Purchase Plan, and an annual appreciation bonus.

Entering the environmental services industry, On Assignment acquired EnviroStaff, Inc. in 1996. This was the company's biggest acquisition by far, which involved the issuance of stocks valued at about $6.2 million to purchase the $10.6 million company. EnviroStaff became the name of On Assignment's third division, serving the environmental services, regulatory compliance and health and safety markets. Revenues in 1996 increased 21 percent to $88.2 million, with net income also healthy at $5.6 million (a 29 percent increase). The growth was attributed to the success of all three operating divisions. In addition to the new environmental division, in 1996 On Assignment initiated other new programs, including Assignment Ready (a service through which clients and prospects are notified of promising candidates through summaries and weekly reports), additional recruitment and training of Account Managers, and a new video-teleconferencing system allowing such interviews to be arranged faster and more efficiently.

As On Assignment looks toward the future, it plans to pursue the strategy that has worked so well since 1989: expanding in new and existing markets, providing highly valued services, and applying its assignment methods to a growing list of professional and technical job categories, through acquisitions or internal development. Since the company was made profitable when Buelter took over, its track record is glowing. Given consistent leadership and well-planned acquisitions and expansion projects, and with no major competitors in the nationwide market, On Assignment should continue to prosper.

MLB Trade Rumors

By Anthony Franco and Darragh McDonald | July 9, 2024 at 5:26pm CDT

The Giants announced a series of roster moves today, with left-hander Blake Snell as well as infielders Wilmer Flores and Thairo Estrada all reinstated from the injured list. One spot on the active roster was already opened when they traded outfielder Austin Slater to the Reds. They opened two more by optioning left-hander Kolton Ingram and designating shortstop Nick Ahmed for assignment. The latter move drops the 40-man roster count to 39.

Ahmed signed with San Francisco on a minor league deal early in Spring Training. The longtime Diamondback essentially took over for Brandon Crawford as a glove-first veteran shortstop. Ahmed hit well during exhibition play and made the roster, locking in a reported $1.5MM base salary in the process. He picked up the Opening Day nod at shortstop — the first time a player other than Crawford got that honor since  Miguel Tejada back in 2011 — and went on to start 50 games overall.

As is typically the case with Ahmed, virtually all of his contributions came on defense. Statcast credited him as four runs better than average across 426 innings. Defensive Runs Saved was less bullish, grading him one run below par. He hit in the bottom third of the batting order and ran a .232/.278/.303 slash line with one homer over 172 plate appearances.

Ahmed is a two-time Gold Glove winner who has been one of the sport’s preeminent defensive shortstops throughout his career. While he’s still a good defender, his numbers have taken a step back from elite levels as he has gotten into his mid 30s. Ahmed has never been much of an offensive threat and has particularly struggled over the past few seasons. Since the start of the 2021 campaign, he owns a .222/.273/.330 line in a little more than 900 trips.

Estrada’s return from the IL will likely push  Brett Wisely from second base to shortstop, at least against right-handed pitching. Righty hitting  Tyler Fitzgerald is in the lineup tonight against Toronto southpaw  Yusei Kikuchi . While the 25-year-old Wisely is stretched defensively at shortstop, he provides a higher offensive ceiling than Ahmed brought. Wisely owns a decent .278/.313/.421 slash through 135 plate appearances in his second MLB campaign.

The Giants have five days to trade Ahmed or place him on waivers. He has well over five years of MLB service time and would retain his entire salary if he clears waivers and becomes a free agent. A release is the likeliest outcome. Once Ahmed clears waivers, he could sign with another team for the prorated portion of the $740K minimum.

Meanwhile, Snell returns for his first MLB action in nearly six weeks. San Francisco’s late signing could hardly have gone worse to this point. Snell has battled groin issues throughout the year and been limited to six starts. Opponents have teed off on the defending NL Cy Young winner for a 9.51 earned run average through 23 2/3 innings. Snell will try to get his season on track when he takes on the Blue Jays this evening.

Watch a few Orlando Arcia at bats.

I could excuse the dogshit swing if he was saving runs with his glove but he looked bad in the field as well.

' src=

That’s been true more recently. He was much better offensively through most of the first part of the season; not a threat but not a sure out either. His glove is still solid, despite what the post insinuates.

Luciano time?

' src=

For now, it’s Wisely time. He’s been the best option most of the year anyway.

' src=

Luciano is currently in a dismal slump. Striking out a ton and has been moved off of shortstop to second base. So probably Estrada to Shortstop and Wisely to Second. All good !

What? Wisely has been more than playable at SS whereas Estrada looked bad at SS last year. Wisely at SS with Estrada at 2b and Fitz spelling both. Possible they make a strong push for Bo in the coming weeks but if they don’t land him then Schmitt is another option right now. Luciano likely is trade bait in a package for Bo.

Wisely / Fitzgerald combo at either Short or Second will most likely provide better offense then Ahmed did. Either way works for me.

' src=

BaseballGuy55, While I agree, Wisely at short and Estrada at 2B, makes more sense defensively than the reverse, I disagree about Bichette. While he’s has hit in previous seasons, his 72 wRC+ this season isn’t much better than Ahmed’s 69. And he’s not good with the glove at all. For his career he has a -18 OAA, and a -7 DRS.

Schmitt isn’t the answer either. Don’t let those PCL numbers fool you. He can’t even crack the list of Fangraphs’ top 42 Giants’ prospects.

I’d take Bo Bichette in a heart beat. The guy can rake and steal bases. This year is his only poor year and he’s young.

Pete’sView, Where would Bichette play? He’s a defensively liability at SS. The Giants already have 3 guys that can play 2B. Bichette has never played a single inning at any other position.

He won’t come cheap. Do you really want the Giants to give up something of quality in hope of him re-finding his swing?

No, they’ll keep Estrada at second and let Brett continue at ss with occasional chances for Fitzgerald at ss.

' src=

I think so. Wisely in particular earned himself some confidence and commitment. Good work.

' src=

When is Luciano time? Does it fall between Brkiano time and Diniano time just before Napiano time?

' src=

Seems like more roster churning this year than years past. Wonder if there is a statistical analysis of roster days lost to injuries year over year. Seems like a lot so far.

' src=

Seems like less churn to me!

' src=

The Churnometer is down 23.4 since this time last season.

It’s up 7.2 since 19 minutes ago

' src=

So they released their starting shortstop for most of the year

Luciano surely has to be ready right? He’s been talked about for almost half a decade

' src=

It’s Brett Wisely ‘s spot for now, unless they trade for somebody.

Ahmed hasn’t been the guy for months.

Luciano will never be ready to play SS

Luciano is gonna be a top 100 prospect for the next 10 years

Marco Luciano will not be a Major League shortstop. Third base maybe. Outfield maybe. Even first base.

' src=

Lotta B hole so called Giant fans took issue with Ahmed. The guy plays a good SS and he had some clutch hits. Also, he was making less than $1M this year. Wish him the best, everyone on the team and media always had great things to say about him.

' src=

Wish him the best as well, but he hasn’t been what he’s cracked up to be defensively this year.

' src=

Completely agree with Dave. I also think this is the right time to part ways for both the Giants and Ahmed. Gives him the ability to sign with a contender, and now the Giants can really evaluate Wisely on an everyday basis (I’m still not sold on him, for whatever reason)

' src=

maybe that reason, is because we’ve all seen Wisely play terrible in the past and we’re not certain that his play is sustainable..

' src=

“we’ve all seen”? So “past” would be defined as up until today. Am I right dub? Which game did you all see him make his only error so far? He’s played 4 positions and has ONE error. Looks pretty “sustainable” to me.

the better word I should’ve used is that he’s hit terribly in the past..as in last year and the hitting not being sustainable..but hey, his new batting stance turned his career around

' src=

If you are a contender, you already have better than Ahmed. He might fit with a team like the Marlins.

' src=

He was making 1.5 mil this year.

Agreed. Did a very good job. All the best to him.

' src=

Still a great defender. Still has some value as a bench piece; certainly not with the bat but with the glove at least.

' src=

Defensively better (and slight better hitter) than Crawford from last year and STL may be looking as well to relieve crawford.

' src=

For the Giants fan who cried when they signed Ahmed and let Crawford walk, this transaction is the exact reason why.

Could you imagine if the Giants had a struggling Crawford on their roster and had to pick between adding a younger, more productive player and unceremoniously cutting B-Craw? It would’ve been a nightmare.

Exactly right !

' src=

Very solid point.

' src=

The Giants. Haha Zaidi committed 400 Million this past offseason and they still can’t play above .500

@chumpy That’s pretty easy to explain, though. They were never going to be division leaders, and injuries have affected some of their key players (while their record might not be substantially better, I’d have loved to see what they could’ve done with a healthy Jung Hoo, as my avatar might suggest).

What is harder to explain is how the Yankees, for all of their massive spending and acquiring big name players, are 3.0 games back from a team with a third of their payroll.

' src=

They also have one ring in the past 24 years to the Giants three

Injuries are a poor excuse. Every team has injuries. Not every team has depth.

@styme You’re not wrong, but I didn’t really make a substantive enough claim about the team for injuries to be a poor “excuse”. That’s doubly so when @chumpy’s argument is that the team can’t play above .500 with $400mm in commitments this offseason when $100mm+ of those commitments is out for the season (JH Lee).

' src=

Giants-3 Red Sox-2 Astros-2 Cardinals Royals Braves Cubs Rangers Dodgers Nationals

Just in case you needed a reminder of all the teams that have won a World Series since the Yankees have won their last one.

Guess Nick Ahmed won’t be accepting a Ring if the Giants win the World Series.

Yes he would. On the extremely long odds of that happening, every guy that played on the Giants’ ML roster would get a ring. In 2010, Bengie Molina got a Giants’ WS ring, and a Rangers’ AL pennant ring.

He did not accept the D-Backs 2023 NL Pennant Ring on his own account, why I mentioned it.

That’s interesting. Do you know why? Was it because they released him?

' src=

Put up or shut up time for Snell.

' src=

He got the starts he wanted for rehab, shoved in the last one no hits 9ks and 1 BB but only 5ip.

His last rehab start before this IL stint included a perfect inning, and a no hit appearance. He’s expressed more frustration with the organization than himself at this point. He’ll probably just go through the motions until the end of this year, no doubt he’ll opt in

I have not seen a single thing hinting at frustration for the organization but I have seen several articles about him being frustrated with himself

“I haven’t felt like myself”

Sure frustration, nothing about saying he’s just bad though

“it’s just we need you, we need you”

That’s him saying they’re rushing him. Sure he tried to go back on it, but he said what he said. Dude just sucks

They did need him. He is getting paid plenty to be needed.

Here’s hoping it’s a new beginning.

Ooh, wait till Snell hears what Gmen said.

' src=

Trade him to Detroit for Baez. Please……

it would take a Pablo Sandoval bobblehead to make that trade happen..

Sold. We will give you the Bobblehead too and Mr I will pitch in free pizza for life!

Baez?!!! Just what the Giants need, another big swing and miss guy. No thanks!

It was a joke. No one will take Baez. If Greenberg gets a taker for Baez he should automatically win manager of the year. Even if the return us the Big Panda bobblehead.

Finally, Luke Jackson next please

He will probably be given a few more mop up chances while waiting on Cobb & Ray. If he continues to suck maybe sooner.

It’d be fine if he were only given mop up chances, but they’re putting him in close games cause they have nobody else. The fact that they optioned bivens and didn’t dfa him is appalling. They just need to eat the money at this point

' src=

Come home to Boston, Nick. Would love to have you as a veteran bench presence.

' src=

Bo Bichette please

Little Bo peep. That’s what she said.

' src=

Ahh Ahmed, #3 on the UCONN alum WAR list behind Springer and Nagy. Go Huskies.

' src=

Before posting an article online, the author should check the stats… ALL the stats: Brett Wisely has reverse stats at the plate, His AVG is: .407 vs lefties & .242 vs righties

Oh! His OPS vs lefties (same side) is 1.095

Giants don’t need or want Bichette. If Farhan trades for him, he should be fired as soon as he hangs up the phone. Get all the antilitical people in the front office and can them too. Get back to baseball instead of numbers on the computer.

' src=

“antilitical”

Analytics have been around for decades. Antilitics have been around as long as your post.

' src=

No pop and was a dead pull hitter. Decent glove with a puss arm. Ahmed did what he had to do in spring training but he’s cooked. The Giants are better off playing Wisely, Fitz or Luciano

Trying to envision a puss arm.

Maybe it’s equivalent to a weenie arm in the feminine sense.

Looks just like a vaginal appendage would.

Say Ahmed to that!

The assignment: Build AI tools for journalists – and make ethics job one

A recent Poynter Summit on AI, Ethics and Journalism challenged leaders to dream big and solve ethical challenges

on assignment

Imagine you had virtually unlimited money, time and resources to develop an AI technology that would be useful to journalists.

What would you dream, pitch and design?

And how would you make sure your idea was journalistically ethical?

That was the scenario posed to about 50 AI thinkers and journalists at Poynter’s recent invitation-only Summit on AI, Ethics & Journalism .

The summit drew together news editors, futurists and product leaders June 11-12 in St. Petersburg, Florida. As part of the event, Poynter partnered with Hacks/Hackers , to ask groups attendees to  brainstorm ethically considered AI tools that they would create for journalists if they had practically unlimited time and resources.

SEE POYNTER’S AI WORK: One stop for journalist resources, ethics guidelines and more.

Event organizer Kelly McBride , senior vice president and chair of the Craig Newmark Center for Ethics and Leadership at Poynter, said the hackathon was born out of Poynter’s desire to help journalists flex their intellectual muscles as they consider AI’s ethical implications.

“We wanted to encourage journalists to start thinking of ways to deploy AI in their work that would both honor our ethical traditions and address the concerns of news consumers,” she said.

Alex Mahadevan , director of Poynter’s digital media literacy project MediaWise , covers the use of generative AI models in journalism and their potential to spread misinformation.

“I thought a hackathon would be a great way to speed-run through the thorny ethics issues that’ll come up as newsrooms start incorporating generative AI in the newsroom,” he said. “The goal wasn’t necessarily to create the perfect journalism AI product, but to identify areas where we need to be careful to respond to audience fears about trust, security and ethics behind artificial intelligence.”

on assignment

Paul Cheung, with Hacks/Hackers, talks to participants at Poynter’s Summit on AI, Ethics and Journalism about how the day-long hackathon to create ethically considered AI journalism products will work. Alex Smyntyna/Poynter.

The hackathon led to six imagined technologies, which ranged from apps to websites to software. All the theoretical inventions sought to help people, answer questions and improve the quality of life for news audiences. While the exercise was theoretical, one group is actually taking steps to try to pursue and get funding for its idea, an AI-powered community calendar.

As the working groups conceptualized their visions, they identified plenty of ethical considerations. Here’s what some of them came up with, and what they learned through this exercise.

Just because it’s AI doesn’t mean it’s not time-consuming

PolitiFact editor-in-chief Katie Sanders helped conceptualize a tool that would serve as a guide to local elections.

Vote Buddy was meant to be a local news product , which required detailed information about precincts and candidates and their positions. Seemingly endless details stacked up as her team considered the experiment, she said, which called for more and more journalistic firepower.

Her team noted almost immediately that “the ethical concerns were abundant.”

They started by asking hard questions about use and users. Sanders said it was important to understand exactly what the team wanted to create, consider the problems it would solve for users, and make sure there was an actual need; and if audience members/users would be comfortable with the means by which the AI tool provided the information.

“As we started to tease out what this service could be, we aso realized how much human manpower would be needed to pull it off and maintain it,” she said. “The experience showed me that your product is only as good as the amount of time and energy that you set aside for the project.”

Just because it’s an AI product, she said, doesn’t mean it won’t eat up resources, especially when it comes to testing and rooting out any and all inaccuracies.

“Hallucinations around something as serious as someone’s vote are just unacceptable,” she said. “I felt better about having been through the experience, roleplaying what it would take.”

Help journalists figure out an AI entry point

Mitesh Vashee , Houston Landing’s chief product and technology officer, said that many journalists are simply afraid of AI, which creates a barrier to journalists learning how to use it at all — especially ethically.

He said it’s helpful for journalists to start their journey toward ethical AI use by playing around with AI tools and discovering practical  uses for it in their day-to-day work.

That way, “It’s not just this big, vague, nebulous idea,” he said, “but it’s a real-world application that helps me in my day. What’s the doorway that we can open into this world?”

His group conceptualized Living Story , a “public-facing widget that appears at the article level, which allows readers to interact with the story by asking questions.”

Vashee said that journalists’ fear that AI would replace them has been front and center in many of his conversations.

“We’ve made it clear at Houston Landing that we won’t publish a single word that’s generated by AI — it’s all journalism,” he said. “It’s written by our journalists, edited by our editors, etc. …That being said, the editorial process can get more efficient.”

He said that as newsrooms look to implement new technology to help with efficiency, more work needs to be done to define roles.

“What is truly a journalist’s job? What is an editor’s job? And what is a technology job? I don’t know what that full answer looks like today, but that’s what we will be working through.”

Don’t wait to consider potential harm

One hackathon group identified less with workaday journalism and more with theoretical issues adjacent to journalism.

“(Our group was) mostly educators and people in the journalism space, more so than current working journalists,” said Erica Perel , director of the Center for Innovation and Sustainability in Local Media at the University of North Carolina. “The product we came up with dealt with bias, trust and polarization.”

The Family Plan was a concept that helped people understand what news media their loved ones were consuming, and suggested ways to talk about disparate viewpoints without judgment or persuasion.

Their biggest ethical concerns centered on privacy and data security.

“How would we communicate these privacy and security concerns? How would we build consent and transparency into the product from the very beginning?,” she said. “And, how could we not wait until the end to be like, ‘Oh yeah, this could be harmful to people. Let’s figure out how to mitigate that.’”

Consider your journalist role and its boundaries

on assignment

Members of the hackathon team that created an AI product called CityLens explain their idea to a panel of judges: (seated, l-r) Tony Elkins, Poynter faculty; Phoebe Connelly, The Washington Post; and Jay Dixit, OpenAI. Credit: Alex Smyntyna/Poynter.

The hackathon team behind CityLens envisioned it as a free, browser-based tool that would use interactive technology to help users learn about and act on their local environment.

Smartphone cameras would capture a local image and then users could enter questions or concerns, which theoretically would lead them to useful information, including, “how to report a problem to the right entity, whether a public project is in the works at that location, and what journalists have already reported,” according to the team’s slides.

It would also offer an email template for reporting concerns like dangerous intersections, unsanitary restaurants, code violations,  malfunctioning traffic devices, etc.

“I really liked the audience focus,” said Darla Cameron, interim chief product officer at The Texas Tribune. “The framing of the whole event was, how do these tools impact our audiences? That is something that we haven’t thought enough about, frankly.”

Cameron said for their group, the ethical concerns involved boundaries and the role of journalists.

She said that several of the groups grappled with questions about the lines between journalistic creation of data and the tech companies’ collection of personal data.

“How can journalism build systems that customize information for our audiences without crossing that line?” she asked, noting that there was also a concern about journalists being too involved. “By making a tool that people can use to potentially interface with city government … are we injecting ourselves as a middleman where we don’t have to be?”

Think about personal data collection and storage

Omni is “a personalized news platform that delivers the most relevant and engaging content tailored to your preferences and lifestyle,” according to the presentation of the group that created it.

Adriana Lacy , an award-winning journalist and founder of an eponymous consulting firm, explained that the group started with some nerves about their tech savvy.

However, they quickly found their footing — and ethical concerns. It became obvious that for Omni to work, its inventors would have to contend with the ethical issues surrounding personal data collection, she said.

“Our goal was figuring out how can we take information … and turn it into various modes of communication, whether that’s a podcast for people who like to listen to things, a video for people who like to watch video, a story for people who prefer to read,” Lacy said. “Basically, compiling information into something that’s super personalized.”

Much of the information they would need to gather was essentially first-party data.

“We had some conversations about how we could ethically get readers to opt into this amount of data collection and we could be compliant in that area,” Lacy said. “We also discussed how we could safely and securely store so much data.”

Their other big ethical concern was figuring out how they could integrate the journalistic process into the project.

“So much of our idea was taking reporters’ writing, video and audio and turning that into a quick push alert, a social media video, a podcast, an audio alert for your Alexa or Google Home — anywhere you choose to be updated,” she said. “The question remains: How can we apply our journalistic ethics and process into all these different types of media?”

Some work didn’t stop at the hackathon

One team is even looking to launch a real product based on its session at Poynter.

Dean Miller, managing editor of LeadStories.com, said his team of four focused on “the community-building magic of granular local newsroom-based calendars.”

He said their idea, Calindrical , would bring real value to busy families and much-needed time to newsrooms, so the group has bought specific URLs and is working on paperwork to make the idea a reality.

“Our goal is a near-zero interface,” he said. “Think Mom driving (her) son to soccer, calling or texting to ask when (her) daughter’s drumline show is tonight, and where, and getting the info immediately and sending the info to Grandma and Dad.”

Miller said the group proposes to use AI to both collect event information and to “assiduously” reach out to organizers to verify.

He said Poynter’s focus on AI ethics was helpful and necessary.

“(The) hackathon process was an early and quick way to surface bad assumptions,” Miller said. “We were spurred to focus our thinking on privacy protection, data security, user power and how to stave off the predations of Silicon Valley’s incumbents.”

Poynter as incubator for AI ideas

on assignment

Participants at Poynter’s Summit on AI, Ethics and Journalism, along with leaders from Hacks/Hackers, study sticky notes with ideas they might want to develop as part of the event’s hackathon. Credit: Alex Smyntyna/Poynter.

The summit was led by McBride , one of the country’s leading voices on media ethics;  Mahadevan , who covers the use of generative AI models in journalism and their potential to spread misinformation; and Tony Elkins , a Poynter faculty member who has been studying AI’s use in visual journalism.

Partner Hacks/Hackers is an international grassroots journalism organization whose mission is to “create a network of journalists (‘hacks’) and technologists (‘hackers’) who rethink the future of news and information.”

The goal was to challenge those in attendance to think about AI concepts beyond traditional applications like transcriptions, translations or content automation.

Mahadevan said, “I thought it went great. I was worried people would default to the basic headline writing, transcribing and summarizing popular in generative AI use. But we saw some incredibly creative ideas. I think this really positions Poynter as an incubator of what I’m calling ethically sourced AI products.”

The summit took place following Poynter’s release of its AI Ethics Guidebook , and organizers expect to release a research paper from the symposium in the near future.

Elkins said, “As generative AI development and usage starts to intersect more with journalism, it’s important that Poynter facilitates the discussion between journalists and technologists on ethical frameworks for its use. It’s imperative we have meaningful discussion on the ramifications these models will have on our industry and our customers.”

Chicago White Sox Third Baseman Yoán Moncada Finally Starting Rehab Assignment

Sam connon | 9 hours ago.

Apr 6, 2024; Kansas City, Missouri, USA; Chicago White Sox third baseman Yoan Moncada (10) warms up prior to a game against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium.

  • Chicago White Sox

Chicago White Sox third baseman Yoán Moncada is starting a rehab assignment in the Arizona Complex League on Tuesday, according to reports from the Chicago Sun Times' Daryl Van Schouwen and others.

Moncada has been out with a left adductor strain since April 9, when he fell trying to run out a ground ball . He was placed on the 10-day injured list and ruled out three-to-six months the very next day , then got transferred to the 60-day injured list on April 12.

Last month, White Sox general manager Chris Getz told reporters he expected Moncada to be back around the All-Star Game, which was on the optimistic end of his initial timeline. The 29-year-old infielder remains on track for that return date, considering he has 10 days until the regular season picks back up post-All-Star break.

Moncada was batting .282 with three doubles, a stolen base, five walks, a .774 OPS and a 0.4 WAR in 11 games this season before he went down. It looked like Moncada was in for a bounce-back season after a few inefficient and injury-plagued and campaigns, despite the fact that he was yet to record a home run or RBI.

A back injury limited Moncada to 92 games in 2023. Oblique, quad, hamstring and foot injuries led to him appearing in just 104 games in 2022. After playing in 86.1% of the White Sox's games from 2017 to 2021, he has appeared in just 49.6% of their games since.

Even when he was playing, Moncada wasn't putting up great numbers as of late. He averaged 11 home runs, 44 RBI and a 1.5 WAR per season from 2020 to 2023, batting .243 with a .720 OPS.

Moncada had shown promise in the past, however, beyond the fact that he was once one of the top prospects in baseball. He hit .315 with 25 home runs, 79 RBI, a .915 OPS and a 5.2 WAR in 2019, establishing himself as one of the key pieces of the White Sox's young core.

Chicago gave Moncada a five-year, $70 million extension that offseason, and he has largely failed to live up to it. That contract is set to expire this coming winter, unless the White Sox elect to pick up their $25 million club option on Moncada.

The White Sox own the worst record in baseball at 26-67 this season, so it isn't as if Moncada will help the club make a serious playoff push this fall. Still, if he can prove to be healthy and reliable down the stretch, he could earn quite the payday in the process.

Spain vs. France lineups: Jesús Navas given Kylian Mbappé assignment for Euro 2024 semis

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente was forced to change his usual formation for Tuesday's semifinal against France with a number of players suspended or injured.

Spain paid the price for its dramatic win over Germany and defenders Dani Carvajal and Robin le Normand are suspended. They are replaced by Jesús Navas and Nacho and will be tasked with marking France star striker Kylian Mbappé .

Navas is set to become the oldest-ever outfield player to appear in a semifinal at a major international tournament at 38 years and 231 days old.

Midfielder Pedri was forced off in the eighth minute against Germany with a knee injury following a hefty challenge from Toni Kroos and has been ruled out of the rest of Euro 2024 . He has been replaced by Dani Olmo — who came on for the 21-year-old and went on to score the opener as well as set up Mikel Merino's winner in the last minute of extra time.

The only time De la Fuente had changed his starting lineup was when he sat key players like Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams for Spain's final group game, a 1-0 win against Albania .

France coach Didier Deschamps has dropped the underperforming Antoine Griezmann and replaced him with Ousmane Dembélé, who came on for a a scintillating player of the match cameo against Portugal.

Adrien Rabiot returns from suspension, with Eduardo Camavinga dropping back to the bench in the only other change from the quarterfinal against Portugal, that France won on penalties after the match ended 0-0.

The winner will play England or the Netherlands in the final on Sunday in Berlin.

Spain: Unai Simón, Nacho, Álvaro Morata, Fabián Ruiz, Dani Olmo, Aymeric Laporte , Rodri , Nico Williams, Lamine Yamal, Jesús Navas, Marc Cucurella .

France: Mike Maignan , Dayot Upamecano , Jules Koundé, Aurélien Tchouameni, Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé, Randal Kolo Muani , N'Golo Kanté, Adrien Rabiot, William Saliba , Theo Hernández.

3 Cardinals takeaways as lineup powers them to a season high point

WASHINGTON, DC - JULY 08: Paul Goldschmidt #46 of the St. Louis Cardinals celebrates hitting a solo home run in the fourth inning during a baseball game against Washington Nationals at Nationals Park on July 8, 2024 in Washington, DC. (Photo by Mitchell Layton/Getty Images)

WASHINGTON — When the St. Louis Cardinals rolled into the nation’s capital, there was considerable concern over how they’d fare against the Washington Nationals’ projected starters. The Cardinals entered the four-game series with the second-lowest OPS against left-handed pitching and were slated to face four consecutive lefties.

The Cardinals’ lineup, specifically the heart of the order, has fallen far short of expectations. Nolan Arenado and Paul Goldschmidt both entered July with an OPS below .700. A seven-week injury to Willson Contreras didn’t help.

But against the Nationals’ lefties, the Cardinals looked all right. They scored 27 runs over four games and coasted to a series victory with a 6-0 win over Washington on Monday. Goldschmidt and Alec Burleson both homered in the series finale. Nolan Arenado had eight hits in the series and Contreras homered twice. The offensive performance earned rave reviews from manager Oli Marmol.

“I thought we took very competitive at-bats,” Marmol said. “Even when we had the lead, we just kept adding on. You look at how we attack starters … Our strength hasn’t been against left-handed starters. We knew we were going to have to grind, but I do feel we did exactly that.

“Credit to our offense because it’s starting to come alive.”

The offense isn’t the only thing clicking for the Cardinals, who improved to 48-42, a season-high six games over .500. The rest of the team seems to be doing just fine as well. Let’s take a look at three factors that should help the Cardinals as they enter the final week of the first half.

Lars Nootbaar bolsters defensive outfield

After missing over a month with a right oblique strain, Nootbaar was activated ahead of Monday’s game and went 1-for-4. Marmol’s preferred defensive outfield features Brendan Donovan in left field, Michael Siani in center and Nootbaar in right. Marmol considers Burleson a mainstay in the lineup (and rightfully so), which points to Burleson seeing most of his reps as the designated hitter. Of course, on days when Contreras needs a breather behind the plate, Burleson can switch to right field and Donovan can swap to second base, which gives Nolan Gorman a rest day while Contreras serves as the DH.

This fluidity aligns with what Marmol and president of baseball operations John Mozeliak envisioned at the start of the season. Injuries to Nootbaar and Tommy Edman hindered those plans, but with Nootbaar healthy and Edman getting closer, the club will soon see what it looks like at full strength.

Marmol indicated after Monday’s win he’d prefer not to platoon his lineup. Part of that is due to the roster. The Cardinals have one true right-handed bat off the bench — reserve catcher Pedro Pages . Donovan, Burleson and Nootbaar are considered everyday starters regardless of handedness, and switch-hitting Dylan Carlson can play center field in place of Siani against certain opposing left-handers. As the Cardinals navigate areas to improve ahead of the trade deadline, the production of their everyday lineup will be critical. How the offense fares will determine whether the Cardinals need to add a right-handed bat to their roster.

Ryan Helsley ’s All-Star nod caps off bullpen’s first half

Helsley was named to the All-Star team for the second time. While his historic consecutive save streak was snapped at 31 on Friday night, he leads the majors in saves and has captured the National League reliever of the month award twice this season.

“I had big goals this offseason to really try to stay healthy as best I could,” Helsley said. “I think throwing one inning a day has really helped. … It’s very exciting. It’s been fun going out there and playing a lot of close games. It keeps us on our toes and it’s been a fun year so far.”

God is good 🙏🏼 https://t.co/0yBfzdRHqK — Ryan Helsley (@_RHelsley) July 7, 2024

Helsley is one of several relievers thriving for the Cardinals this season. St. Louis has depended heavily on the backend of its bullpen. Sixty-three of the team’s first 90 games have been decided by three runs or fewer; they’ve won 38 of such contests. The Cardinals lead the NL with 33 holds, made possible by set-up men JoJo Romero and Andrew Kittredge . Ryan Fernandez and Matthew Liberatore have excelled as multi-inning relievers and Chris Roycroft has the potential to become a revelation. The Cardinals’ bullpen ERA is 3.40, the fifth-best in baseball. Their 34 total saves are the most in the sport.

Tommy Edman to begin rehab assignment

After a season of setbacks in his recovery from offseason right wrist surgery, Edman was cleared to begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Springfield on Tuesday. He spent the last few days participating in on-field drills, including a live batting practice against right-hander Riley O’Brien , who could start his own rehab assignment later in the week.

Edman’s rehab process will be lengthy. He will require several weeks’ worth of games as he acclimates to game action for the first time since last September. He won’t be limited to where he plays, however. And he’s fully cleared to swing from both sides.

There’s no telling how long of a rehab assignment Edman will need. A return right after the All-Star break would be ideal, but given the amount of time he’s missed, the Cardinals won’t set a firm timeline. When that does happen, St. Louis will use him as a super-utility option where he’ll play center field against left-handed starters and roam the corner outfield and middle infield spots against right-handers.
