The latest presentation apps have made it easier than ever to format slides and create professional-looking slideshows without giving off a "this is a template" vibe. Even standard PowerPoint alternatives have updated key features to make it easier than ever to collaborate and create presentations quickly, so you can spend more time prepping for your actual presentation.

If, like me, you've used Google Slides unquestioningly for years, it's a whole new world out there. The newest crop of online presentation tools go way beyond the classic slideshow experience, with new features to keep your audience's attention, streamline the creation process with AI, and turn slide decks into videos and interactive conversations.

I've been testing these apps for the past few years, and this time, I spent several days tinkering with 25 of the top presentation software solutions out there to bring you the best of the best.

The best presentation software

What makes the best presentation app, how we evaluate and test apps.

When looking for the best presentation apps, I wanted utility players. After all, slideshows are used for just about everything, from pitch decks and product launches to class lectures and church sermons. With that in mind, here's what I was looking for:

Pre-built templates. The best presentation tools should have attractive, professional-looking templates to build presentations in a hurry.

Sharing and collaboration options. Whether you plan to share your webinar slides later, or you just want to collaborate with a coworker on a presentation, it should be easy to share files and collaborate in real-time.

Flexibility and customization options. Templates are great, but top presentation apps should enable you to customize just about everything—giving you the flexibility to build exactly what you need.

Affordability. Creating compelling presentations is important, but you shouldn't have to bust your budget to make it happen. With capable free tools on the market, affordability is a top consideration.

Standalone functionality. There's no reason to use multiple tools when one can do it all, so I didn't test any apps that require and work on top of another presentation app like PowerPoint or Google Slides.

Familiar, deck-based interface. For our purposes here, I only tested software that uses slides, with the familiar deck-based editor you expect from a "presentation" tool (versus, for example, a video creation app).

Beyond that, I also looked for presentation apps that brought something unique to the table—features above and beyond what you can get for free from a legacy solution like PowerPoint or Google Slides.

Here's what my testing workflow looked like:

I went through any onboarding or guided tutorials.

I created a new deck, scanning through all available templates, noting how well-designed they were (and which were free versus paid).

I added new slides, deleted slides, edited text and images, and played around with other content types.

I changed presentation design settings, like color schemes and background images.

I reviewed and tested the sharing and collaboration options.

I tested out presenter view (when available).

After my first round of testing, I went back into the top performers to test any unique or niche features, like AI, brand settings, and interactive content. With that, these are the best presentation apps I found—each one really brings something different or radically easy to the table.

Canva offers one of the most robust free plans of all the presentation apps I tested. The app delays account creation until after you've created your first design, so you can get started building your presentation in seconds. Choose from an almost overwhelming number of beautiful templates (nearly all available for free), including those designed specifically for education or business use cases.

Anyone who's accidentally scrolled too far and been bumped to the next slide will appreciate Canva's editor interface, which eliminates that problem altogether with a smooth scroll that doesn't jump around. Choose from a handful of preset animations to add life to your presentations, or browse the library of audio and video files available to add. And Canva also has a number of options for sharing your presentation, including adding collaborators to your team, sharing directly to social media, and even via QR code.

Present directly from Canva, and let audience members submit their questions via Canva Live. Once you share a link to invite audience members to your presentation, they can send questions for you to answer. As the presenter, you'll see them pop up in your presenter view window, so you can keep the audience engaged and your presentation clear. If you're like me, editing granular spacing issues is the absolute worst part of building a presentation. Beautiful.ai uses artificial intelligence to take a lot of the hassle and granular design requirements out of the presentation process, so you can focus on the content of a presentation without sacrificing professional design. If I needed to make presentations on a regular basis, this is the app I'd use.

Many apps have recently added AI design features, but Beautiful.ai has been doing it for years—and they've perfected the experience of AI design, ensuring the tool's reign as the most streamlined and user-friendly option for AI design.

The editor is a little different from most presentation apps, but it's still intuitive—and you'll start off with a quick two-minute tutorial. When creating a new slide, scroll through "inspiration slides" to find a layout you like; once you choose, the app will pull the layout and automatically adapt it to match the design of the rest of your presentation.

With 10 themes, several templated slides, over 40 fully-designed templates, and more than 20 different color palettes to choose from, Beautiful.ai strikes a perfect balance between automation and customization.

While Beautiful.ai doesn't offer a free plan, paid plans are reasonably priced and offer sharing and collaboration options that rival collab-focused apps like Google Slides. And speaking of Google, you can connect Beautiful.ai with Google Drive to save all your presentations there.

Note: I re-tested the generative AI feature (called DesignerBot) this year. It's great for adding individual slides to an existing presentation—automatically choosing the best layout and matching the design to the rest of the deck—but as with most other apps, it struggled to pull in relevant images.

Struggling to squeeze information into a basic, linear presentation? Give Prezi a try. Unlike nearly all other presentation apps on the market, Prezi Present doesn't restrict the structure of your presentation to a straight line. The editor focuses on topics and subtopics and allows you to arrange them any way you want, so you can create a more conversational flow of information.

With the structural flexibility, you still get all the same customization features you expect from top presentation software, including fully-editable templates. There's a learning curve if you're unfamiliar with non-linear presentations, but templates offer a great jumping-off point, and Prezi's editor does a good job of making the process more approachable.

Plus, Prezi comes with two other apps: Prezi Design and Prezi Video. Prezi Video helps you take remote presentations to a new level. You can record a video where the presentation elements are displayed right over your webcam feed. Record and save the video to share later, or connect with your video conferencing tool of choice (including Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet) to present live.

Prezi's generative AI feature works ok, but it's more useful as a wireframe. When I asked it to create a presentation about the Stanley Cup Playoffs, for example, the resulting content read a lot like a student writing a term paper in the broadest strokes possible to avoid doing any actual research.

Powtoon makes it easy to create engaging videos by orienting the editor around a slide deck. Editing a Powtoon feels just like editing a presentation, but by the time you finish, you have a professional video. 

You can edit your slides at any time, and when you hit play, a video plays through your deck—the feel is almost like an animated explainer video. Each slide includes the animations you choose and takes up as much time as is needed based on the content on the slide. Powtoon figures the timing automatically, and you can see in the bottom-right of the editor how much time is used on your current slide versus the total presentation. If you ever want to present as a slide deck, just toggle between Slideshow and Movie.

You'll likely need to subscribe to a paid plan to get the most out of Powtoon—like creating videos longer than three minutes, downloading them as MP4 files, and white-labeling your presentations—but doing so won't break the bank. Plus, you'll unlock tons of templates complete with animations and soundtracks.

One of my favorite Powtoon features is the ability to orient your video: you can choose horizontal orientation (like a normal presentation) or opt for vertical (for mobile) or square (for social media). When your presentation is ready, you can publish straight to YouTube, Wistia, Facebook Ads, and any number of other locations.

User interface is a little different than you're used to

Need to collaborate on presentations with your team? Pitch is a Google Slides alternative that gets the job done. As far as decks go, Pitch includes all the beautifully-designed templates, customizability, and ease of use you expect from a top-notch presentation tool. But the app really shines when you add your team.

The right-hand sidebar is all about project management and collaboration: you can set and update the status of your deck, assign entire presentations or individual slides to team members, plus comment or add notes. Save custom templates to make future presentations even easier and faster.

You can also invite collaborators from outside your company to work with you on individual decks. And if you opt for a paid plan, Pitch introduces workspace roles, shared private folders, and version history.

Pitch also offers one of the most impressive generative AI features on this list. It still struggles to pull in relevant images, but I found the AI-generated written content and design to be top-notch.

I tested a lot of apps claiming to use AI to up your presentation game, and Gamma's conversational AI features were head and shoulders above the crowd.

Simply give the app a topic—or upload an outline, notes, or any other document or article—approve the outline, and pick a theme. The app will take it from there and create a fully fleshed-out presentation. It's far from perfect, but Gamma produces a very useful jumping-off point. (Last year, it was by far the best, but this year, other apps are catching up.)

Here's the key: Gamma is much more geared toward the iterative, chatbot experience familiar to ChatGPT users. Click on the Edit with AI button at the top of the right-hand menu to open the chat, and you'll see suggested prompts—or you can type in your own requests for how Gamma should alter the presentation.

Once you've done all you can with prompts, simply close the chat box to manually add the finishing touches. While you do sacrifice some granular customizability in exchange for the AI features, you can still choose your visual theme, change slide layouts, format text, and add any images, videos, or even app and web content.

If you need to engage with an audience during your presentation, Mentimeter makes that easy. The app is designed around interactive elements like quizzes, surveys, Q&As, sliders, and more (even a Miro whiteboard!).

Each of these is included in a number of different, professional-looking templates, so you can build a fully interactive presentation super quickly.

When it's time to present, your audience members can scan the QR code with their phone cameras or type in the URL and access code to participate. There's one code per presentation (so they won't have to do this on every slide), which gives access to each slide as you move through the presentation.

There are two main drawbacks to this one, though. First, there's a bit of a learning curve and less familiar editing interface (but I found it pretty easy to learn with some practice). The other drawback is that you can't get as granular with the visual customization as you can with many other presentation tools.

Simple, customizable templates

There's definitely a learning curve

Tome is one of the new additions to this list that I'm most excited about. If you're looking for generative AI that just genuinely works , it's definitely worth a look. The editor is a bit more stripped down than most presentation apps but intuitive nonetheless—it's almost a cross between your standard deck editor and a Notion-style doc.

To generate an AI deck, click Generate with AI in the top right, and either write your own prompt or choose from the example prompts that cover a handful of common use cases, like sales enablement and company pitches. Edit or approve the suggested outline, then generate the full presentation.

From there, you can edit each slide as a doc via the right-hand menu—without limits on how much information you can include. During the presentation, you simply size down any slides that take up more than the standard amount of space. It's super simple but somehow feels revolutionary in a presentation app.

What about the old standbys?

You might notice a few major presentation players aren't on this list, including OGs Microsoft PowerPoint, Apple Keynote, and Google Slides. These apps are perfectly adequate for creating basic presentations, and they're free if you have a Windows or Mac device or a Google account.

I didn't include them on the list because the presentation space has really developed in the last several years, and after testing them out, I found these behemoths haven't kept pace. If they weren't made by Microsoft/Apple/Google, I might not even be mentioning them. They're pretty basic tools, they're behind the curve when it comes to templates (both quantity and design), and they don't offer any uniquely valuable features like robust team collaboration, branding controls, video, and so on.

In any case, if you're reading this, you're probably looking for an alternative that allows you to move away from one of the big 3, and as the presentation platforms featured above show, there's a ton to gain—in terms of features, usability, and more—when you do.

What about PowerPoint and Google Slides add-ons?

While I focused my testing on tools with full feature-sets—those that can serve as your sole presentation tool—there are a ton of add-on tools you can use atop big name tools like PowerPoint and Google Slides.

Nearpod is also free to use for classes up to 40 students, but it does have some limitations. The app only allows for 100 MB of storage and some LMS integrations. However, Nearpod for Schools offers good value for money and can offer bespoke solutions for you and your intuition’s needs.

NearPod is the best option for schools – especially for distance learning.

I like that there are so many great lessons and activities already created that are available for teachers to choose from. It is also user-friendly and easy to add to any lesson plan! There’s not much I dislike about this learning resource. The only thing I can say is that I have found that NearPod is not always easy for every student to interact with the lesson. Nearpod helps me plan exciting lessons and takes a lot of work and time out of my lesson planning and preparation time. It is also great to use when there is a substitute in class.

Prezi is one of the best online tools for making interactive presentations that look beautiful and dynamic . Prezi’s standout feature is its approach to your presentation structure: instead of a linear format, you can navigate your presentation in a much more flexible and dynamic manner. Besides this unique design approach, Prezi gives you a lot of customization features that center on making presentations that look striking.

If you’ve ever made a presentation, then you probably understand what is meant by a linear presentation – a slide deck where each slide shows some information or visual, and over the course of the presentation, you proceed from slide 1 through to the final slide. Prezi breaks this format. Instead, you can jump to any slide in the deck via animations.

With data visualizations and media integration, Visme excels in the design area. This means you can convert existing slides or documents into beautiful presentations or create them from scratch. Your presentations will also be engaging with several interactive features.

Visme offers customized navigation, animations, clickable assets, polls, quizzes, and videos, all of which can make your presentation more engaging. However, it doesn’t stand out in terms of interactivity, instead focusing on ease of use and design.

One feature that Visme is proud to offer is its AI-powered design assistant, which can take your prompts and help you design your slides accordingly. This could be a great tool for accelerating the design process and compensating for a lack of inspiration. The tool is, however, still in beta and may not be a useful tool for those who want to take design into their own hands.

Gamification is a huge topic in eLearning and has been proven to positively impact learning across many fields, therefore making it a huge bonus for your presentation.

While other interactive platforms for presentations make gamification possible, Genially has great options that are incredibly easy to implement. Moreover, Genially also offers a wide range of interactive elements such as hover-over labels, hotspots, and pop-ups, which also means learners can interact with your presentations without the need for a presenter.

Genially makes visually impressive presentations and is simple to use. It is also priced competitively, and offers plenty of value for its cost, and even offers a generous free plan.

Genially is the best option for people from different professional areas who want to engage their audience by presenting their content dynamically, beautifully, and in a highly interactive way.

Genially is the best web-based design enhancement tool I’ve ever used. The media options, integration options, templates, etc. are absolutely top notch, and look incredible on any style of Genially you create! I mostly use Genially for creating flyers, interactive images, and interactive (non-linear) presentations. I’ve created my own “brand” inside of Genially, and it’s incredibly easy to use everything I’ve created anywhere I want, as well as to use the pre-created media. It’s just an amazing tool.

11. Beautiful.ai

Beautiful.ai is one of the most innovative online presentation tools for its use of AI in the design process . What Beautiful.ai does is to simplify and accelerate the process of creating visually succinct presentations from your content, through the use of artificial intelligence. All you have to do is insert your text and media, and the AI assistant does the rest.

This system works great for applying a theme to an existing presentation in order to apply branding, for example. You just have to select your template and colors, and the AI assistant will make sure that each slide is optimized to look great. Beautiful.ai removes the need to go through all your slides, adjusting fonts, scales, positions, colors, and more; it all just works.

Beautiful.ai is a time-saving tool that allows you to focus on the content of your presentation. While it is truly amazing at what it does, it isn’t designed to do much else. Beautiful.ai doesn’t add interactivity options, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make engaging slides with it.

Like other interactive presentation software, Beautiful.ai has added a generative AI feature to its platform, allowing you to create slides from written prompts. While this does have the potential to be an effective time-saving tool, it is hit-and-miss in its current form. Like many other generative AI options, it usually doesn’t give you exactly what you want, so if you are serious about your presentations, you still need to make them yourself. However, with Beautiful.ai, the design can be automated effectively.

Beautiful.ai is the best option for people who create or edit presentations often and want to spend less time on that task, while keeping their work at a high level.

Prezi turns the traditional approach to presentations on its head. Instead of creating slide after slide, this presentation software gives you a single giant canvas. You can add blocks of text or images, or even create miniature slides. During your presentation, you can seamlessly fly around the canvas and zoom in to look at individual chunks of content.

For how complex Prezi seems, it’s impressively simple to use the platform. The only major divergence from Microsoft PowerPoint is that you need to add animated paths from one part of the canvas to another. The tools for this are fairly straightforward, especially if you’ve ever used an animation or video editing software.

Of course, this type of presentation structure isn’t always ideal. Prezi makes it hard to visualize structured data like financials, which can make it difficult to use in business applications. Some viewers also might not appreciate the fly-around animation style that’s inherent to the presentation software.

Canva is perfect for making speedy presentations right in your web browser. This software offers a handful of free layouts to help you get your slideshow started, and it’s easy to customize the templates to fit your needs. There isn’t a huge variety of content elements to add to your presentation, but Canva makes up for this with a searchable library of more than 1 million images you can use.

Your Canva presentations live online, which makes it extremely easy to collaborate. You can invite colleagues to edit your slideshow (although simultaneous editing is not supported) or seamlessly share your finished presentation. However, beware that Canva can’t import presentations from Microsoft Powerpoint or export finished work to a Powerpoint-editable format.

3. LibreOffice

LibreOffice is a free alternative to Microsoft Office, and it includes a Powerpoint equivalent called Impress with nearly all of the same functionality. The only big difference you’ll find between the two slideshow creation tools is the LibreOffice lacks some modern features like built-in collaboration and integration with Microsoft OneDrive.

However, Impress does have a few advantages of its own. The software can import files from Keynote, the default presentation software on Mac computers. Plus, there are hundreds of free templates that you can download for free. Even better, there’s no limit on what fonts you can use with Impress, so it’s easy to change the look of your presentation from what Powerpoint typically allows.

On the whole, LibreOffice Impress is about as close as it gets to simply replicating Microsoft Powerpoint for free.

Google Slides is part of Google Workspace (formerly G Suite), and it does a nice job of matching a number of PowerPoint’s capabilities. This free presentation software supports embedding videos, creating diagrams, and adding animations to your slides. While the selection of templates is somewhat limited, you can easily import hundreds of additional templates for free or create your own.

Even better, Google Slides supports the collaboration tools users have come to expect from Google. Multiple people can work on a slideshow simultaneously, and there’s a built-in group chat so you can keep track of what everyone is doing. It’s also nice that you can play your presentation in presenter mode, which allows you to preview how it will look to your audience and rehearse timing.

The only downside to Google Slides is that bloated slideshows can experience some loading delays. Also beware that while you can move between Slides and Powerpoint, the conversion often messes with the layout of your slides.

WPS Office Free is a Microsoft Office look-alike that fully support PowerPoint files without any layout issues during import. How to Choose The Best Presentation Software For Events

Live events can be stressful: because you only have one chance to get an event right, there’s often more pressure. Often the visual component of an event will be extensively planned out, then changed at the last minute, and it still has to work once the show starts.

Because so much is riding on getting it right, event professionals need presentation software they can rely on. They need the best presentation software, designed for events, that does the job well.

In this article, we’ll show you the top features and attributes you should look for when choosing presentation software for events . But first, let’s look at what makes live events different from other presentation scenarios.

Apple WWDC 2024: Apple Intelligence is here with ChatGPT integration

Apple has unveiled Apple Intelligence , its artificial intelligence software that features an integration with OpenAI's ChatGPT.

Its capabilities, which will be free when users opt into them, will include composing texts, creating images and emojis from scratch, and organizing and prioritizing functions and notifications while users are on their iPhones or Macbooks.

The new functions were unveiled at Apple's annual Worldwide Developer Conference Monday at its headquarters in Cupertino, California.

Though widely expected, initial investor response to the launch of Apple Intelligence was muted, with Apple shares down nearly 2% an hour before markets closed Monday.

Apple execs led by CEO Tim Cook and Craig Federighi, senior vice president of software engineering, emphasized that AI on Apple would be "for the rest of us" — an attempt to make a world-changing if still opaque technology relatable to the average Apple user, who they say still expect its products to be secure and approachable.

Longtime Apple analyst Gene Munster said in a post on X that the new suite of features will be enough to prompt a new wave of users to upgrade their products to be able to tap into them.

OpenAI touts Apple partnership, says integration coming later this year

Apple will be integrating ChatGPT into its products, ChatGPT maker OpenAI announced in a recent press release . Some new features that the Apple-OpenAI partnership will bring about:

• Siri will give users the option to utilize ChatGPT to answer user questions
• Users will also be able to use ChatGPT to generate written content

OpenAI emphasized that privacy protections will be built in when using ChatGPT and Siri or Writing Tools.

"The ChatGPT integration, powered by GPT-4o, will come to iOS, iPadOS, and macOS later this year," OpenAI said in its release.

Apple's user data key to AI race, analyst says

A quick reaction from Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives: "So far, all about Apple controlling device and the person and leveraging that as developers will need to tap into that data."

That user data will be key, he said. Apple's offerings so far are a bit more conservative than what Google and OpenAI have put forward, but that isn't the difference-maker.

"ChatGPT combined with data," Ives said. "They will win the consumer AI game."

Final takeaway: AI is here — but no Big Bang

The WWDC presentation has wrapped.

The big takeaway: AI — in the form of Apple Intelligence — is here, and market leader ChatGPT will be integrated into iOS and the other Apple operating systems moving forward.

But ultimately, there weren't a ton of fireworks. A lot of nice updates to features across Apple's product suite, but perhaps not the Big Bang that some analysts may have been hoping for.

Indeed, initial investor reaction is fairly muted, with Apple shares down 1.5%.

As Federighi stated, it's just the beginning. But it's a relatively subdued one.

Apple Intelligence for developers

Apple isn't just putting its new AI into the hands of consumers — it's putting it into the hands of developers as well.

Developers will be able to access new tools and features to help them integrate Apple Intelligence into their products. Aided by the sessions offered this week at WWDC, developers will be able to dive into the world of Apple Intelligence and offer more AI features to users.

Altman touts Apple partnership

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman touted his company's partnership with Apple shortly after it was announced that ChatGPT would be available through Apple Intelligence.

...But not *only* ChatGPT

ChatGPT can also be used for "Compose" mode, where users can create content using the AI platform, like a bedtime story for your child.

ChatGPT will be free to Apple users — and all information and data will be secure and private. It's coming later this year.

But, Federichi says Apple is leaving the door open to other AI models beyond OpenAI's product.

Federighi says Apple is integrating OpenAI's "pioneer and market leader" ChatGPT into Siri.

The magic promised by Image Wand

Image Wand, a new tool offered in the Notes app, will allow users to turn a rough sketch into what Apple calls a much more polished image — thanks to Apple Intelligence.

Apple's stock down a bit

The market doesn't look impressed with Apple's AI presentation.

Its stock price is down 2.2% on the day.

The end of cover letters?

Apple Intelligence will help edit users' writing, from class notes to blog posts to cover letters. Suggestions will be shown in line, and Rewrite will help people adjust the tone of their writing. Apple Intelligence will offer tips for grammar, word choice and sentence structure that users can accept.

With all the help Apple Intelligence provides, it's likely that employers will have a much more difficult time differentiating between cover letters.

How does ChatGPT feel about Apple's new AI venture?

"I'm definitely intrigued! The concept of Apple Intelligence sounds fascinating," ChatGPT replied. "It could represent a significant step forward in integrating AI capabilities into Apple's ecosystem."

It's not yet clear whether Apple and OpenAI will be partners or competitors in the world of AI, though a partnership has been rumored.

Pretty straightforward so far

Apple's introduction of AI is leaning heavily on what we've seen from generative AI for some time: the ability to help write emails, create pictures, respond to text prompts.

That's not a critique, and Apple is good at taking existing tech and making it consumer friendly. This could all still end up being a leap forward for users, but so far it's about what we would expect.

You can now plug in a description for an emoji idea and Apple Intelligence will create it. Apple is calling it GenMoji.

Apple preserving its brand proposition as it enters AI

Apple's integration of AI is in keeping with its longtime promise to users: making it relatable — and secure.  

It's doing this by making much of the AI processing "on device" — meaning within someone's own iPhone or Mac. The company is touting this as ensuring user privacy.

When it must go outside the device, it is creating Private Cloud Compute. These will use Apple-backed servers — but Apple will not be able to access or store your data.

AI is scary. Apple is trying to make it normal.

The biggest AI rollout yet?

Yes, ChatGPT is open to the public. And Meta has put AI front-and-center in a lot of its platforms.

But Apple putting AI into its products and software is probably the largest rollout of the tech to consumers, a bet that this is something consumers will find helpful.

Something new for Siri

Siri is getting a refresh. Apple's top goals for Siri are to make the voice assistant more natural, relevant and personable using Apple Intelligence. Siri will now be able to:

• Speak more conversationally
• Respond to typed commands and switch between text and voice
• Answer questions about Apple features and settings
• Take actions within and across apps

Personal intelligence, rather than artificial intelligence

It seems like Apple has avoided using “artificial” in relation to this AI tech.

Instead, there's an emphasis on "personal" intelligence.

Apple is launching Passwords, an app that will allow users to access their passwords, verification codes and security alerts in one place.

This app will be available on the iMac, iPhone, iPad and Vision Pro as well as on Windows. Apple said that the passwords will securely sync across devices.

Apple announces MacOS Sequoia

Named after the California tree, its new features are:

• iPhone mirroring
• Access your phone when it’s in a different room — and interact on phone wirelessly from a Mac
• iPhone notifications will simultaneously appear on Mac
• Window snapping when you drag a window to the edge of a screen

SmartScript, a new feature that utilizes handwriting

With the introduction of SmartScript, the Notes app will now allow users to select and copy their writing, as well as make it straighter. Using machine learning models, SmartScript will refine a user's handwriting as they go.

Calculator on iPad!

Get your pencils ready — literally: Calculator is coming to iPad — and now you can use its electronic Apple pencil to help users doing math problems on iPad.

Updates to the Health app

Apple mentioned cycle tracking, a feature that's available on the Health app, is available to help people track their menstrual cycle and will now show them their gestational age. Additionally, the app will display a user's pregnancy across all charts and notify them when their heart rate is too high.

Apple Watch update: Training, Vitals app, and custom photos

Apple Watch is getting some new tweaks:

• A new Vitals app that has more enhanced features than the standard Health app
• Advanced fitness training using the watch's body tracking features
• A real-time translation feature
• A new ability to customize photos for the home screen of your watch

Support for RCS messaging

Apple mentioned that Rich Communication Services, known as RCS, will be coming to iOS. RCS is a communication protocol that aims to replace SMS messages. This change is expected to improve messaging between Apple and non-Apple users.

With anticipation of an Apple-OpenAI partnership, it's notable that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is in the audience.

Noise filters will enhance audio quality on AirPods

Apple is adding a feature called "Voice Isolation" to AirPods that will allow background noise to be removed.

And a nod or a head-shake will also dial up Siri on AirPods.

Nothing direct on AI yet

So far, the features Apple is announcing are updates of existing products and services. While "intelligence" and "machine-learning" capabilities are built into some of them, a big AI reveal has yet to come.

Updates to iMessage

Apple announced multiple key updates to its iMessage app.

First, users will now be able to react to texts with any emoji, not just the options originally provided by Apple. They will also be able to format and schedule texts for later.

Individual words and emojis can also be now be emphasized with a slate of new effects.

Finally, there will now be satellite capabilities on the iPhone 14 and later for both iMessages and SMS messaging. Apple emphasized that iMessages sent over satellite are end-to-end encrypted.

Hiking trails coming to Apple Maps

You'll soon be able to access topographic hiking trails, including offline, via Apple Maps. They'll also allow you to create and track your own routes.

New flexibility on iPhone home screen, control center

Apple will let users do more to customize their iPhone home screen, including a new look for app icons in dark mode and a way to customize the colors off icons.

Control Center will also expand to include more settings including home controls and media playback, and providing a way for developers to add controls.

New countries for Vision Pro

Apple announced its Vision Pro at last year's WWDC. Just now, Tim Cook shared that starting June 28, the Vision Pro will be available in China, Japan and Singapore, with more countries to follow in July.

Apple announces VisionOS 2, a software update to its Vision Pro headset

Apple announced VisionOS 2, an updated software platform for its Vision Pro headset.

The key new feature: Vision Pro users will now be able to create "spatial photos" and "spatial videos" — 3D images that add depth to a regular 2-D image.

Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice president of marketing, tweeted out that watching today's keynote is the "intelligent thing to do," hinting that Apple will announce AI-related updates today.

Don't expect a big surge in Apple's share price today

Just ahead of kickoff, shares in Apple are actually trading slightly lower.

And Apple analyst Gene Munster says not to expect them to do much once the presentations are underway either.

Munster notes on X that Apple's expected AI rollout has already been "priced in," since a statement earlier this from an Apple exec foreshadowing it.

Since that post, on March 26, Apple shares have climbed 15%, Munster notes.

"The bottom line is today’s announcements are largely known and baked into the stock," he said. "What matters going forward is whether Apple will display a core competency in AI."

Apple CEO Tim Cook teased today's event in a post on X from the company's picturesque campus.

Apple AI right on time, analyst says

Many people have criticized Apple for being too slow in its adoption of AI. But independent analyst Ben Thompson says Apple is right on time.

"AI is a complement to Apple’s business, not disruptive," Thompson wrote for his website Stratechery .

He noted that smartphones will likely be the platform that AI technologies are released on for the foreseeable future, instead of AI replacing smartphones. And if Apple announces a partnership with OpenAI (as it is expected to do today), this will likely decrease the threat of OpenAI building its own device to rival the iPhone.

"[They] are well-positioned to be one of AI’s big winners," Thompson wrote of Apple.

A piece of Apple history

Bloomberg's Jon Erlichman notes that on this day in 1977, Apple started shipping its Apple II computers, which helped put the company on the map and make personal computers accessible to the general public.

On the ground at WWDC

It's already a scene at Apple Park.

We’re staged with other media outside the Steve Jobs Theater, though the event is a bit of a walk over to Apple Park Loop. It's a cool 62 degrees but expected to heat up considerably as the day progresses.

More than an hour before the event, there's already hype men at the entrance trying to amp guests up. You can hear the occasional cheer.

Longtime Apple analyst Munster: Most important WWDC since iPhone launch

Gene Munster, a longtime Apple analyst and managing partner and co-founder at Deepwater Assest Management, said today is Apple's most momentous conference since it announced the launch of the iPhone more than 17 years ago.

In a post on X , Munster said today was more important for the future of the company than the announcement of the Apple Store (July 2008), the iPad (January 2010), the Apple Watch (September 2014), Apple TV (March 2019) and the Vision Pro (June 2023)

"Even though AI won’t initially be a direct revenue segment, infusing AI across the product line is essential for the existing products to thrive," he said.

An upgrade for Siri?

Apple first launched Siri in 2011, billing it as a voice assistant that fit right in people's pockets.

Since then, Siri has floundered a bit with no new major upgrades. However, Apple's new embrace of AI could change that.

It's not exactly clear what functions that a Siri with generative AI will have, but we should know in a couple hours.

Apple's share price is up approximately 7% since June 13, 2023, while Google and Microsoft shares are both up more than 25%.

How to watch the keynote

Apple will be kicking off WWDC24 at 1 p.m. ET with a livestream of the keynote on its website and YouTube channel , as well as the Apple TV app.

What is WWDC?

Apple's Worldwide Developer's Conference, commonly known as WWDC, is an annual event to showcase the company's new software and technologies.

WWDC, which started in 1983 , has been a launchpad for some of the company's biggest products. Last year, the company introduced its Vision Pro.

This year, WWDC will run from June 10 to 14 at Apple Park, with the keynote address delivered by CEO Tim Cook at 1 p.m. ET today. Additionally, sessions for developers will be held throughout the week, and the 2024 Apple Design Awards will be presented.

A boost to Apple's bottom line

Apple's embrace of AI could help the company boost its profits and in turn its stock price, according to a note from Dan Ives, a managing director and senior equity research analyst at Wedbush Securities.

He noted that Apple's AI rollout could help spark growth in its key business, most notably iPhone sales.

"In a nutshell WWDC is a pivotal moment in Apple’s future as the developers are the hearts and lungs of the Cupertino growth story and will now start a new AI driven chapter in the Apple growth story for the coming years," Ives wrote in an emailed note.

Apple faces pressure to show off AI following splashy events at OpenAI, Google and Microsoft

The boom in generative artificial intelligence, spawned in late 2022 by  OpenAI , has been the biggest story in the tech industry of late, lifting chipmaker  Nvidia  to a  $3 trillion market cap  and causing a major shifting of priorities at  Microsoft ,  Google  and  Amazon , which are all  racing  to add the technology into their  core services .

Investors and customers now want to see what the iPhone maker has in store.

New AI features are coming at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which takes place on Monday at Apple’s campus in Cupertino, California.  Apple  CEO  Tim Cook  has teased “ big plans ,” a change of approach for a company that doesn’t like to talk about products before they’re released.

Why everyone is focused on this conference

For some two decades, Apple has been the dominant force in the tech industry. The success of its iPhone has been so massive that it has now attracted the attention of the U.S. Department of Justice, which is suing the company for having created what prosecutors say is a monopoly on smartphones. 

But iPhones are expected to take a backseat in today’s presentation. Instead, Apple is expected to announce a brand new vision for the company as the age of artificial intelligence dawns. Through a widely foreshadowed partnership with ChatGPT creator OpenAI, Apple is set to discuss how AI will now be part of the core of its products and services. 

It's the big day

Is today the day that Apple becomes AI-pple?

Starting at 1 p.m. ET, Apple's keynote presentation for its Worldwide Developers Conference will kick off.

And while WWDC, as it's commonly known, is a big deal in the tech world each year, this is expected to be special.

The boom in artificial intelligence, most notably around Large Language Models and generative AI, has been embraced by just about every big tech company. But Apple is playing catchup.

That's expected to change today.

Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference  is in full swing. The tech giant kicked things off with a keynote event touting the new features that are coming to its devices running on iOS 18, iPadOS 18, MacOS and more.

Well, that's all, folks! Apple unveiled a lot updates, for everything from MacOS , iOS and iPadOS to TVOS and VisionOS . As expected, AI was a key theme, from ChatGPT integration to Apple Intelligence -- Apple's way of saying AI without saying AI. Apple ushers in ChatGPT support for apps including Siri

ChatGPT may not be the only AI chatbot on the market, but it's certainly one of the most popular. As Apple revealed at WWDC 2024, Apple apps including Siri are poised to gain OpenAI's ChatGPT, with GPT-4o support. You can leverage ChatGPT from within Siri. Apple used the example of relying on ChatGPT in Siri to generate menu ideas for a meal with friends, using freshly caught fish along with ingredients from a garden. Additionally, you can include photos in prompts to ChatGPT -- like taking a picture of your deck and asking for decorating ideas, as Apple demonstrated onstage. And of course, you can generate text using Apple's ChatGPT integration in its systemwide writing tools.

Apple's Clean Up tool calls back to Pixel's Magic Eraser

Another iPhone feature reminiscent of what you'll find on high-end Android phones: the new Clean Up tool, which can remove anything in your photo you don't want, like people in the background, for a cleaner final image. This is similar to the Magic Eraser tool on Google Pixel phones, or the Object eraser on Samsung Galaxy phones. It doesn't quite appear to be at the level of Google's Magic Editor, which can generate backgrounds and let you move subjects using AI. 

Siri and Apple Intelligence

Apple Intelligence is going to make Siri more natural, more contextually relevant and more personal, according to Apple's WWDC keynote event. One of the changes to Siri announced at the event involves the design. Calling on Siri creates a new light effect around the edge of your screen. You'll also be able type to Siri if you double tap the bottom of your screen.

According to Apple, Siri will hold a better knowledge of features and settings, which could be useful if you want to do something on your Apple device but don't know what a feature is called. In addition, if you can't remember if information is in an email, a text or a shared note, you'll be able to ask Siri.

Apple introduces Genmoji to create your own emojis

Apple Intelligence -- Apple's way of saying AI -- can handle a lot of productivity tasks, like composing emails, proofreading documents or generating images in its apps like Keynote or Notes. With its "Genmoji" feature -- presumably a portmanteau of "generative" and "emoji" -- you don't have to search around for the perfect emoji. Instead, you can create custom emojis for any situation. Then, you can send these to friends or even react to messages.

When it comes to AI, in Apple do we trust?

Apple's news that it's built AI into all its apps and services brings it in line with recent announcements by Google. Apple says its AI features will work on your behalf to save you time by tapping into personalized information about your life and work to allow you to create images and emails on the fly -- and even emojis (Genmogis -- a play on generative AI). "Apple Intelligence" will scour your emails and calendars and allow you find out who booked that flight and when; where you're meeting someone for dinner; or what you should say to somebody in a reply to a request.

Like Google, Apple is asking you to trust it to access all that personal information in bringing you this AI-powered vision. But should we trust Apple -- or Google, Microsoft or OpenAI -- to do the right thing when it comes to making sure our data is kept private and not co-opted in ways we're uncomfortable with?  

The devil is in the details, so expect this privacy question to be one of the big topics of discussion going forward. As with Google, Apple's products are used by billions of people, so we all need to pay attention to how these systems work, how they're trained, what information they're pulling from us and what guardrails the companies are putting in place to make sure all the data they're slurping up is secure.

iPadOS still isn't a Mac

Just a reminder: MacOS and iPadOS are still separate, and Apple didn't do much to change that at WWDC.

The iPadOS announcements made during Apple's WWDC keynote event were more focused on Pencil improvements, Math Notes for live-scribbling equations, and live-scribbling on a friend's iPad remotely. But running apps in a more Mac-like way wasn't on tap.

iPadOS will be able to take advantage of Apple Intelligence, Apple's cross-OS generative AI services announced at the show, but keep hopes of iPad and Mac being interchangeable for further off in the future.

Apple says its AI will be more secure

Apple has long stressed privacy as a key differentiator of its products, and it seems set to extend that to its use of AI. It says its use of AI will be run both locally on its devices and in the cloud, with the latter taking advantage of what it calls "Private Cloud Compute." For the times when Apple needs to go to the internet to process requests, it won't store or give Apple access to your data, and the data it needs is used "exclusively to fulfill your request." 

Apple even stresses that your iPhone, iPad or Mac "will refuse to talk to a server unless its software has been publicly logged for inspection." 

Apple Intelligence becomes new marketing pitch

Apple, typically not the first to market in new device categories (or even with software features, as today's WWDC announcements show), is now stepping into the AI market with a host of capabilities. But in typical Apple fashion, its AI pitch started with marketing wordplay: AI is "Apple Intelligence." Here's how Apple CEO Tim Cook set up the news about how AI is really about "personal intelligence."

"It's always been our goal to design powerful personal products that enrich people's lives by enabling them to do the things that matter most as simply and easily as possible. We've been using artificial intelligence and machine learning for years to help us further that goal," Cook said. "Recent developments in generative intelligence and large language models offer powerful capabilities that provide the opportunity to take the experience of using Apple products to new heights. So as we look to build in these incredible new capabilities, we want to ensure that the outcome reflects the principles at the core of our products. It has to be powerful enough to help with the things that matter most to you. It has to be intuitive and easy to use. It has to be deeply integrated into your product experiences. 

"Most importantly, it has to understand you and be grounded in your personal context, like your routine, your relationships, your communications and more. And of course, it has to be built with privacy from the ground up together. All of this goes beyond artificial intelligence. It's personal intelligence the next big step for Apple."

Apple Intelligence brings generative AI to iPhone and Mac

Apple Intelligence, the way Apple is branding AI, can do things like organize your texts or help with emails. This includes being able to help you write or proofread emails. Apple will also allow you to generate images in three different styles, including sketch or cartoon. The company is showing this is as a fun tool for playing with images in messaging. Apple also says AI is used in its new Math Notes feature, shown off earlier in the show. 

The company is calling AI's ability to adapt to you "personal intelligence." Apple also says it's using on-device AI capabilities to avoid having data to process in the cloud. The company says this is a more secure way of giving users AI capabilities, without having their data being used to train models. But not all these models can run on-device. So, some features will have to offload capabilities to outside servers. To handle this, Apple has created Private Cloud Compute.

Apple's new AI system can generate images for you inside a variety of apps, including Messages, Keynote, Pages, Notes and Freeform. It can even generate new images based on photos you have of a person.

More games coming to Apple devices

Thanks to the Apple's Game Porting Toolkit 2, more games will be coming to Apple devices, including iPads with Apple Silicone chips and the latest iPhones. Using Metal, Apple's 3D graphic and compute shader API, it'll mean games like the upcoming Assassin's Creed Shadows, Dead Island 2 and Control can make their way to a slew of Apple devices. Assassin's Creed Mirage is already available.

A Calculator app is coming to the iPad

The official Calculator app for the iPad has arrived. 

Rejoice, iPad users. Apple's tablet has lacked a dedicated calculator app since its inception, but Apple has decided to finally add one with iPadOS 18. The new app will even work with the Apple Pencil, so you can take "math notes."

Apple won't say AI

We're 45 minutes into the WWDC keynote presentation and no one's said AI or "artificial intelligence." Instead, we've heard presenters say "intelligence" or "machine learning." And every time they say "insightful," know that's code for AI/ML.

The Photos app is getting a new look

Apple Photos will get a fresh look.

Apple is revamping the Photos app to help you keep your always-growing library more organized. The tech giant showed off the redesigned app during its WWDC keynote event, and one change is that the app now shows a photo grid at the top and your library organized by theme beneath it. The revamped app will arrive with iOS 18.

Apple enhances TVOS for Apple TV streaming devices and makes its Apple TV Plus streaming service smarter

The streaming service Apple TV Plus is getting a new feature, called InSight, as announced at WWDC 2024. Apple TV Plus' InSight option shows which actors are on screen or lets you identify songs playing in an episode or movie and even quickly add tracks to an Apple Music playlist. InSight is available with a quick swipe down on your remote. The Apple TV streaming device gets upgrades for home theater enthusiasts thanks to TVOS updates. On the audio side, there's enhanced dialogue compatibility for TV speakers, home theater receivers and Bluetooth devices such as Apple AirPods. Enhanced dialogue is intended to boost voices even in the midst of scenes with lots of effects. From a visual standpoint, the Apple TV's TVOS gets 21:9 aspect ratio support for better widescreen display. There are also new screensavers to pick from, like your own photos, art galleries or content from your favorite movies and shows -- Apple highlighted a cute Snoopy and Woodstock screensaver featuring the beloved Peanuts characters.   

The Apple Watch is getting more-flexible goals

Apple is finally adding some of the health features I've been asking for. With WatchOS 11, you'll be able to customize activity goals according to the day of the week, learn when multiple health metrics are off base with a new Vitals app, and pause goals when you need a rest day. These updates will surely make the Apple Watch more competitive with rivals like Oura, Fitbit and Samsung. 

WatchOS gets more training options

For training, Apple says its new Training Load feature will use more of your personalized data to tell you how much effort your exerting during exercise. Apple says this involves using algorithms to better tune fitness goals to you personally.

RCS texting is coming, but no details

"RCS message support" is coming, but Apple didn't provide any additional details during the WWDC 2024 keynote. That's unfortunate, because it would've given us the first opportunity to learn about improved texting between the iPhone and Android. But I guess Apple's going to kick the can down the line on green bubble texts.

AirPods Pro get some software enhancements

Apple is bringing some cool gesture features to the AirPods Pro. They include being able to accept or reject a call just by nodding your head. Apple also said that better outside noise isolation will mean clearer calls. And Apple is bringing personalized spatial audio to video games. The first game to show off this feature is Need for Speed by Tencent and EA. 

Apple rolls out Game Mode for an enhanced mobile gaming experience

Mobile gaming is on the rise, whether with Apple Arcade titles; native iOS and iPadOS games; or Apple's recently announced emulation support. At WWDC 2024, the company revealed a new Game Mode feature for iPhones. Game Mode limits background activity to provide a better mobile gameplay experience, such as higher frame rates. Apple's iPhone Game Mode also improves connectivity with AirPods and wireless video game controllers for faster responsiveness from wireless peripherals.

Messages can now be sent over satellites, if you have an iPhone 14 or later

As part of a slew of updates coming to the Messages app in iOS 18, Apple announced that people with an iPhone 14 or later will be able to use satellites to send iMessages and texts to contacts even in places where they don't have internet or cellular connectivity (but can still see the sky). Apple has allowed for using satellites to connect with emergency services before , but this will allow you to message others and not just first responders.

It remains to be seen if Apple will charge extra for the service. Apple has included the satellite connectivity feature for free since adding it to the iPhone 14 in 2022, and last year the company decided that it would push off the idea of charging for it  for at least another year . 

No mention of AI -- yet

We're 28 minutes into Apple's WWDC keynote presentation and there's been no mention of AI yet. The market is waiting, impatiently.

Vision OS 2 gets minor updates

VisionOS 2 is getting a bunch of updates, but maybe not as many as you might have thought.

The Apple Vision Pro's latest software updates were the first thing announced at this year's WWDC developer keynote. The news might be a disappointment to anyone wanting major changes to Apple's four-month-old mixed reality headset, but some of the features look helpful: and the headset is becoming available in countries outside the US, too.

The Vision Pro is arriving June 28 in China, Japan and Singapore, and July 12 in Australia, Canada, France, Germany and the UK. The headset was previously US-only.

VisionOS 2 has a few key new features. Apple's introducing new hand tracking shortcuts to get back to the app grid, bring up control center, or check on time. There's also a clever new converter in the Photos app that promises to turn older photos into 3D "spatial" photos.

Apple also discussed new developer tools that should allow full 3D environments and apps to run side by side, or place mixed reality experiences more easily on tables. There's also an enterprise business toolkit for making manufacturing or other industry-focused apps, an area that seems like a growing territory for Apple's expensive headset.

Mac extended displays on Vision Pro are getting larger, up to a promised double 4K size, and in a curved widescreen format. But it doesn't look like multiple monitors will be offered, and Apple mentioned nothing about Vision Pro working with other devices like iPad, iPhone or Apple Watch.

Apple also teased more Immersive videos coming, including a Red Bull sports series and a project featuring The Weekend.

No mention of RCS -- yet

Apple shared some updates to Messages, including the option to send texts later, add text effects and send messages via satellite, including SMS texts. What Apple didn't talk about: RCS. No mention -- at least not yet -- of the new messaging standard coming to iPhones. I'm not giving up hope yet.

Apple provides a lineup, but all we really want is more Severance

During WWDC, Apple wasted no time in highlighting its Apple TV Plus entertainment offerings. Severance is due for a new season, but Apple didn't reveal the release date today (at least not in its sizzle reel). It's no secret that Apple could use some more conversation-dominating content with the streaming landscape being as crowded and competitive as it is, and Ted Lasso seemingly isn't returning for more seasons. The next installment of Apple's addicting sci-fi show can't come soon enough.

iOS 18's personalization is very Android

It's great that iOS 18 will let you place your icons wherever you want -- but this has been a selling point for Android forever. Nova Launcher Prime was my preferred way to do this while I was using a Pixel phone. I'd love to see launchers coming to the iPhone one day, but one thing at a time.

Vision Pro will go on sale outside the US

The news that the Vision Pro would go on sale outside the US? Tim Cook literally shouted it from the rooftop -- of Apple Park of course! "I'm happy to announce we're bringing Apple vision Pro to these eight countries next, starting with China, Japan and Singapore on June 28. And Australia, Canada, France, Germany and the United Kingdom on July 12."

Apple Visio Pro features tons of apps, gets operating system updates

Apple's VR headset, the Apple Vision Pro, entered the virtual reality scene in February 2024. Already, it features over 2,000 apps created for the AVP, alongside more than 1.5 million compatible iOS and iPadOS apps. The company announced Apple Vision OS 2 updates at its WWDC 2024. There's a new spatial photos feature that provides additional realism -- Apple demonstrated the ability to toggle on left and right eye views from two-dimensional images, providing more depth. The Photos app in Apple Vision OS 2 offers the capability to enjoy spatial videos, photos and panoramas in the Apple Vision Pro headset. For better navigation, Apple unveiled eye, hands and voice navigation support in its VisionOS.

New control center adds more functionality

The control center in iOS 18 gets a major upgrade as well. For example, not only is it more customizable, but you can also add systems from other apps. If you have a Ford car, for instance, you can add Ford car controls in the control center for quick accessibility. 

At last, you can move app icons on your iPhone home screen

Well, it's about time. Apple has finally taken a page from Android's book and made it possible for iPhone users to place app icons wherever they want on their home screen. You can also choose custom colors to better suit your preferences. Better late than never.

Apple lets you move your apps around in any arrangement you want! It's bizarre that this is a feature worth writing about in 2024, because it's been something available on operating systems for decades. In iOS 18 you can also change the color of your apps.

A very lively opening

Well, that was a lively opening -- Apple began its WWDC keynote presentation with a clip of Craig Federighi, the company's senior vice president of software engineering, jumping out of a plane, Apple Watch on his wrist, with a group of other people donning parachutes and saying things like "iOS," "MacOS" and "iPadOS." All leading to CEO Tim Cook officially opening up the keynote event at Apple Park.

Apple is leading WWDC 2024 with an Apple TV Plus sizzle reel, showing off its best shows and movies. Apple says it has the highest-rated originals out of all the streaming services. Unfortunately, no release date for Severance season 2.

Apple getting into the AI ReALM

There have been many hints about what Apple might add in the way of AI to its products, with a big pointer back in March when researchers at the company shared news about a new AI model, called ReALM. Their 15-page paper   describes an approach to how a large language model, or LLM, can provide context for every element on a screen — including text, images and "forms of entities on screen that are not traditionally conducive to being reduced to a text-only modality." 

What does that mean? it means they were working to allow an AI agent, say like Siri, to understand voice commands and also interact with what's displayed on the screen. 

Here's how the researchers put it: "Human speech typically contains ambiguous references such as 'they' or 'that', whose meaning is obvious (to other humans) given the context. Being able to understand context, including references like these, is essential for a conversational assistant that aims to allow a user to naturally communicate their requirements to an agent, or to have a conversation with it."

To illustrate, this is what the Apple researchers shared in that paper under the headings "Speaker" and "Dialogue."

The researcher added, "It is immediately apparent that it would not be possible for the Agent to understand or complete the user's query without the ability to use and comprehend context. It also stands to reason that there are multiple types of context that are necessary to handle user queries: conversational context and on-screen context being two prime examples."

What this may all add up to is a smarter, AI-savvy Siri that gets closer to that Star Trek vision of how we talk to AI agents. We'll find out shortly what Apple is up to.

What clues will WatchOS 11 give us about the next Apple Watch?

We're coming up on the 10-year anniversary of the Apple Watch, so I'm expecting Apple will want to save a lot of the big, flashy features for that announcement sometime in September. Where does that leave WatchOS 11 in the meantime? I'm hoping to see some news about deeper Siri integrations so you can do more with Apple's virtual assistant, especially when you're not connected to a phone or the internet. 

Last year's WatchOS 10 brought some much-needed improvements to Siri, including faster response times and being able to log health data with your voice on the Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 . I'd love to see Apple take this integration (and reliability) even further, so you can really use Siri as a standalone assistant on the watch. Maybe even being able to leverage Siri when launching a Shortcut from the Apple Watch Ultra 2's Action Button so you could have a more complex conversation?

OpenAI's Sam Altman is in Cupertino, California

Sam Altman, CEO of ChatGPT-owner OpenAI, is in attendance at WWDC. As spotted by our own Scott Stein , Altman is seen walking in Apple Park ahead of today's event. Rumors suggest Apple is about to announce a partnership with OpenAI to have ChatGPT power some of Apple's new AI features. Could we see Altman on stage?

Will I finally start talking to my Mac?

The only time I interact with Siri on my MacBook is when I accidentally hit a key combination that summons the voice assistant. Siri is more adept at handling simple task requests and questions -- "Set a timer," "Create a reminder," "How tall is Luka Dončić?" "How old is Al Horford?" -- that I make on my iPhone than answering more complicated questions that might arise when I'm working on my MacBook. Plus, with my MacBook, I can simply use the keyboard right in front of me to type a question in Spotlight Search or Google to find my answer.

AI is expected to be the focus of WWDC, and Siri will likely be the showcase for the AI advancements Apple will unveil for the next versions of iOS and MacOS. The rumors surrounding MacOS 15 -- a new-and-improved calculator and a System Settings redesign -- are difficult to get excited about outside of the arrival of a smarter Siri. I'm hoping that the AI advancements Apple previews for Siri with iOS 18 will also arrive with MacOS 15 this fall. If Siri is able to complete complex, multistep tasks across different Mac apps, then it could quickly become a regular -- or at least occasional -- part of my workflow. And then my usage scenario might flip, where I use Siri more on my MacBook than on my iPhone.

Apple to reportedly brand its AI push as 'Apple Intelligence'

Apple is late to the AI race , with OpenAI, Google and Microsoft all rolling out AI tools for the past two years. But Apple is savvy in the way it markets its entrance into new categories, to make it feel as if the company has been innovating all this time. Apple wasn't the first company to release a VR headset, for example, but its  Vision Pro certainly set a new standard for how people experience virtual and mixed reality. 

Apple will brand its AI push " Apple Intelligence ," according to a report from Bloomberg this past Friday. Don't expect Apple Intelligence to work like ChatGPT or Dall-E. You won't be generating novels or bizarre pointillist images. Instead, it'll work much in the same way AI works on Google Pixel phones. For the iPhone, AI will work in the background, helping with things like photo editing, automatic transcriptions, summarizing notes, and help with writing emails and messages. Siri, too, will get some much-needed AI smarts.

I hope I'm wrong about iOS 18

There are a lot of rumors about what iOS 18 could bring to iPhones, like a smarter version of Siri and RCS support for iPhones. But honestly, after testing out what feels like hundreds of different iOS features , I'm not particularly excited about any of the rumored ones in iOS 18 -- and don't get me started on the rumored partnership between Apple and OpenAI . None of these rumored features sound like they'll change the way I use my iPhone. Even the scuttlebutt about an on-device generative AI doesn't sound exciting to me because the rumored functions aren't useful to me. So it'll create weird emoji ? Cool, I guess. It'll summarize messages and news stories ? Yeah, no thank you. 

Give me something exciting that I'll actually get some use out of. Let me schedule messages to send to friends and family. Let me customize my lock screen functions like in Android . Give StandBy mode more functionality. Bring split-screen to iPhones when in landscape mode, even if it's just for the Max models. And please, give me something that's not really buggy.

What will Apple's AI announcements say about the iPhone 16?

WWDC is a software-focused show, but announcements still hold clues to what we can expect in Apple's upcoming lineup of hardware. Rumors suggest the iPhone 16 will be the first to have the sort of more-advanced AI that we've seen on other phones, like Galaxy AI on the Samsung Galaxy S24 series. If what we see at WWDC suggests Apple's phones are getting AI, it's reasonable to expect that its hardware -- specifically, the A-series Bionic chipset at the core -- is getting revamped, too.

That's because the AI phones we've seen so far have touted packing the latest Qualcomm chipsets to use their generative AI features. The aforementioned Galaxy S24 phones have the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 introduced last fall, which enables on-device generative AI. Perhaps that means Apple's phones will need new A-series chips to use their top-end AI features. 

If that's true, maybe only the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will get these features, as Apple has adopted a strategy of only putting its newest A-series chips in its more premium phones -- so the presumed iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus may not get all the AI features we see teased on the WWDC stage after all. 

Will Apple (indirectly) address any DOJ allegations?

In light of the US Department of Justice's antitrust suit against Apple , it'll be interesting to see if and how the iPhone maker shines a light on efforts to bridge gaps with third-party devices. With the DOJ alleging the company "undermines cross-platform messaging" by not making its iMessage service available on Android, will Apple highlight its pledge to support RCS ? Will it make linking third-party smartwatches with the iPhone easier? Ultimately, how much of this keynote event will be dedicated to (deftly) contradicting claims leveraged against it and its alleged unwillingness to play nice with competitors? (And, perhaps most importantly, will texts with non-iPhone users still be green ?)

What platform does Apple skip?

WWDC is usually jam-packed with news on all of Apple's biggest software platforms: iOS, iPadOS, WatchOS, MacOS, TVOS and now VisionOS. It also, as noted by 9to5Mac , is an event that usually runs two hours, so assuming Apple sticks to that template and doesn't extend the keynote event, well, something needs to give. 

With AI set to be a key piece of this year's show and expected to be a star feature of iOS 18 , that platform should command a bulk of the spotlight. With the new M4-powered iPad Pros seemingly packing way too much power for the current iteration of iPadOS, a big update there also seems likely. Plus the Vision Pro is Apple's platform of the future and one would imagine the company would want to continue hyping that up. 

TVOS and audio products (like AirPods and HomePod) are usually a quick update, so that could be one way to save a little time, but will this be a quiet year for MacOS? Will Apple save major WatchOS news for the fall when it presumably releases the 10th-anniversary Apple Watch that may also feature a major redesign ?

Will AI upstage the Vision Pro?

At WWDC 2023 last year, Apple put its new Vision Pro front and center, holding it up as the latest pinnacle of product design and innovation. But at this year's WWDC 2024, rumors aren't pointing to new hardware to take the stage. Instead, we expect AI to steal the spotlight.

That's not a big surprise, given that AI -- specifically, generative AI like ChatGPT and Midjourney -- has dominated both hardware and software announcements for the last year, in everything from Adobe launches to smartphone debuts. Why should Apple be any different, even if it's been late to the AI game thus far?

The big question is whether the house of iPhone and Mac will have enough to announce about AI. Even though WWDC is a developer-focused event, it's still a bellwether for Apple's direction, from the products it will announce in the fall to its greater direction in the years to come. The Vision Pro showed us how much the company believes in virtual and augmented reality -- enough to launch a pricey headset to set the bar for the mixed-reality industry. Will Apple's WWDC 2024 announcements do the same for AI?

What else will the M4 processor power?

The iPad Pro and its new display are lovely. But this tech begs for better software and a deeper OS.

Apple revealed its M4 processor last month when it announced the newest iPad Pro tablet, just six months after revealing the M3 chip that powers the current line of MacBook computers and the iMac. 

Apple said the M4 chip helps power the iPad's display while allowing the tablet to be thinner than an iPod Nano, but its M2 and M3 processors are still powerful in their own right. Even so, Apple's highest-end Mac Studio and Mac Pro computers might be due for an update to include this new M4 processor. Maybe we'll see M4 Pro and M4 Ultra variants tailored for these more powerful computers.
